I might do a few mermaids for Mermay. This one isn’t a traditional mermaid, but a youkai called an Amabie -  a mystical, mermaid-like being believed to ward off plagues. Their main features are three tail fins, scales, a beak, human-like hair and a mysterious glow.

My youngest daughter was given the option to draw one for an extension project for online learning today, and I decided to have a crack at it too. In Japan people have been sharing images of Amabie online - take that Covid-19! You can read more about the online sharing here.

Amabie are said to ward off disease, and I love that so many people are sharing them as their own way to help during these stressful times! Here is my rendition.

WIP: Amabie. Not a picture of me, but of a rather obscure but cool creature my host became rather enamoured with, the Amabie, who emerged from the sea to prophesise abundant harvest but also an epidemic, and that drawing it and showing the drawing was a way to protect oneself from disease. I dunno if it works, but worth a try, and even if not it's nice to give exposure to an obscure Yokai :)

I have just listed my Amabie (アマビエ) linocut amulet cards on Etsy! The Amabie is a Japanese mythical creature (Yokai) said to have the power to ward off and cure sickness. As the story goes, in 1846 a glowing light was spotted off the coast of Higo Province. When an official went to investigate, the Amabie appeared foretelling good harvests for six years and casually including that if disease spreads, showing people a picture of it would cure their illness. The official sketched and described the creature as having long hair, a beak, a diamond-shaped eye, scales, and three feet. Naturally, this Yōkai has gained popularity during the Corona virus COVID-19 pandemic. As businesses begin to open and people start to venture out, why not add another layer of protection by gazing at your very own, handmade, Amabie portrait? For practise I decided to make it a digital drawing. The bird head is a hornbills' one in remembrance of my friend from the Wilhelma who is dearly missed.
