Maisie's guide to disguised AI
If you've been anywhere near AO3 recently, you've probably encountered AI writing at some point. As somebody who writes for, primarily, the ER fandom (and occasionally the Pitt, too), I've noticed a concerning trend over the last few days: AI-generated fanfiction clogging the tags.
Firstly, I'd like to say that if you ARE posting fics on AO3 that were AI-generated, and you're passing them off as your own, please stop. I know this is not likely to actually resonate with you if this IS you, but on the off-chance that you do see this- please use tags as intended and make it clear that you're using AI.
Secondly, before I go into some AI tells in detail, I want to preface this with a warning- just because you see one or two of these in a fic, there's no guarantee that it was AI-generated. Please approach the matter of flagging fics with care, because the last thing I want is to incite a witch hunt against innocent people just engaging in fandom.
However, when seen in tandem, these signs should act as a warning to think a little more deeply about what you're reading, and ask the question- was this human written?
1. Em-dashes
I'm getting this one out of the way quickly because it's something easily identifiable, but it should by no means discredit a fic on its own. Real people can use em-dashes, but ChatGPT uses them a LOT. Like, a distracting amount. And they're often used in conjunction with...
2. 'Not' qualifiers
ChatGPT doesn't do 'yes, and'. It seems to work off 'no, but' instead (sorry @pagingdoctorcarter , like an AI, I am stealing your phrase here. But I do have the decency to credit, I suppose!).
Take this sentence I've come up with right now:
Carter was so exhausted he was struggling to stand, legs trembling with the strain of keeping him upright.
AI might write something like this (using my own creative license here because I don't want to feed the beast):
Carter was exhausted— not the regular exhaustion that came with twelve hours on his feet. Something deeper. Heavier.
3. Repetitive phrases.
AI is not original, so it can't come up with anything original, of course. This means that it relies on basic phrases it uses over and over and over again e.g 'the kind of (blank) that (blank)'
4. The classic 'concrete noun' + 'abstract noun' combo
For reasons that I can't quite understand, AI adores this. Some humans include this combo in their work, too, but AI does it even more frequently. Some real phrases I've encountered so far include:
"a story about meatballs and betrayal"
"champagne and anxiety soaked into the upholstery"
5. Anachronisms and inaccuracies
This is especially present in a fandom like ER, where most of the time we're writing about the 90s, and this CAN be attributed to genuine human error... but if Carter is repeatedly 'swiping' on his phone screen to open a call, and everyone's always texting... could be AI.
In a similar vein, if someone is shouting 'code blue!' for things that AREN'T cardiac arrest, or mixing up names and even hallucinating random characters- think 'maybe AI'.
6. Short sentences, short paragraphs, short chapters.
AI doesn't have the ability to understand how paragraphs are structured for ease of reading and flow. So it likes short sentences. Snappy sentences.
And not just when the situation suits it. But always.
If there's a hell of a lot of paragraphs, it could be AI. AI doesn't like including many clauses. At all.
7. Generic similes and phrases that don't mean anything at all
This relates to the 'concrete noun + abstract noun combo' but, more generally, AI produces writing that veers away from specifics. It won't often describe places in too much detail, and when it comes to similes, it uses simple, overused ones OR spouts a series of words that are meaningless. If you see an abstract simile in a fic, take a second. Is it abstract because it's complex and has several layers, or is it utterly meaningless?
8. A crazy update schedule
This one is less reliable because it IS possible to bank chapters and then post a lot in one go, but if an author is posting many thousands of words in the span of a few days, consider this a small red flag- especially in conjunction with the other things mentioned. It could mean they're just pumping out AI-generated writing, and this allows them to move far quicker than any human.
9. Overly mushy dialogue
AI is a thief, but it's a happy-go-lucky thief. Characters speak like they stepped straight off Sesame Street at times, lacking any kind of emotional complexity.
10. Awful, awful jokes
AI cannot write jokes. It simply cannot. If you read a joke in a fic that feels Disney-Channel esque but also doesn't make sense at all? It very well could be AI.
For instance:
Nobody talks like this.
Also, note the 'concrete noun + abstract noun' combo again here! (This actually was an AI fic as confirmed by author before deletion, not naming them here): 'gauze and intuition'.
Conclusion
Be vigilant. Don't fall for AI crap and, if you disagree with the concept of AI work clogging AO3 tags, definitely don't leave kudos.
And if you're posting this stuff, yet again I ask you politely, please STOP.
Thank you.

CHAPTER 1 | I HOPE YOU SEE (RIGHT THROUGH ME)
w.c. 1.2k
tags. minors dni. fem!reader, pro-hero!katsuki, aged-up (23), some cussing (it's not bakugou's internal monologue if there aren't any), suicide-related deaths (see series synopsis for more details), discussions of suicide, canon-typical descriptions of violence
a/n. welcome to another series by yours truly!!!! i know i still have that body swap one in the queue, and while i am planning on working on that, this series' premise just spoke to me and i was emboldened to write it as soon as i could. i'm writing this as i go, though, so the posting schedule is likely gonna be erratic, but i promise i'll try to write this consistently. anyway, i'd absolutely love to hear what you think throughout the process, so please don't be a stranger and talk to me!
links. masterlist, ao3
Somehow, he’s wound up in the emergency room of Musutafu’s highly renowned Central Hospital.
Which, if he had the energy left to really think about it, is not particularly an unusual occurrence. He’s been here—and other similar hospitals—enough to have a general blueprint of the corridors etched in his mind, as well as the basic rules they shared and protocols that were strictly followed. Stuff like how phone calls are prohibited, fatigued doctors specializing in emergency medicine are perpetually present, and how—for a place supposedly and rightfully dubbed with the ‘emergency’ title—the staff sure don’t seem to have a whole lot of sense of urgency.
Although he supposes he’d rather have that than be in a room teeming with frantic energy. Maybe they’re doing it on purpose, actually, for the sake of the patients who get rolled in.
Except right now, he was not a patient.
He was technically not a guardian, either, though the disheveled-looking middle-aged man blatantly staring at him from a few rows up front is most definitely thinking otherwise.
Well, then.
Acutely aware of the unwanted attention, Bakugou shifts uncomfortably in his seat, wincing ever so slightly when the connected metal chairs to his right creak loudly with the motion. It doesn’t help that he’s still in his hero clothes—although he’s aware there’s no point in mulling over it now; after all, he didn’t exactly have the time to do a costume change with all the shit that went down.
Not that he’s exactly sure what that ‘shit’ even was.
It all happened too fast.
One minute, he was walking down his regular patrol route down Shizuoka’s famous tallest bridge—cursing the unbearable summer heat and the dehydration-induced headaches that it brought with it; the next, he was jumping off of it.
He even boosted himself with his quirk to aid gravity in his free fall, but to no avail.
Your body had already collided with the ground by the time he could grab your wrist.
The moments that passed after that are even more of a blur now. He doesn’t know how he did it, but after what seemed like an eternity of merely staring at your limp, bloody body, Bakugou was able to pull out his phone and call 119. The medics arrived shortly after, maybe in a span of five minutes, but to him it felt like more.
It took everything within him not to just haul your body and propel you to the nearest hospital.
Because if someone died under his watch…
“Mr. Dynamight?”
Bakugou startles, looking up from where he was blankly staring at his intertwined, scarred hands. At the sight of a white coat-clad woman, the pro-hero immediately stands up, nodding, turning to face the brunette with his full attention.
“Hi,” the doctor greets, “It’s come to my understanding that you’re the one who called in regarding Patient—” she trails off, looking down at her clipboard to double-check, before saying your name in a question. “Is that right?”
“Yes,” Bakugou rasps roughly, before clearing his throat and trying again. “Uh, yes, doc.”
The doctor nods. “Were you on patrol when you found her?”
Close, the voice in Bakugou’s head retorts without missing a beat. I saw her fucking jump.
Instead of saying all that out loud, however, the ash-blonde only nods wordlessly.
The woman hums. “Okay, then. Well, her parents are still on the way here, and normally we’d let them know first, but given the nature of your involvement and your occupation, I might as well inform you.”
Instantly, Bakugou finds himself bracing for what’s next.
The doctor presses her lips in a thin line.
“I’m sorry,” she starts, shaking her head solemnly. “She didn’t make it.”
Dead on arrival.
You were dead on arrival.
At least, that’s what the doctors told him when he pressed them for more. He couldn’t tell if they were hesitant about divulging further information about you aside from the basics or just simply in the dark themselves, seeing as how they only had your wallet that they found on your person to go from. Either way, Bakugou decided it didn’t matter as soon as an older couple burst through the doors of the emergency room—a good half hour later—whom he immediately identified as your parents.
Needless to say, he hightailed it out of there.
The last thing he needed was to be the unfortunate bearer of bad news, or worse, be recognized as the reason why their daughter is currently lying lifeless in one of the hospital’s private rooms.
After that, he couldn’t remember much of his actions, only that he somehow decided to head to the agency. The entire flight down to his office, he stuck his good ear out for any signs of ringing from his phone, which surprisingly—or unsurprisingly—didn’t come.
Which makes sense.
He’s heard stories before. Exchanged in hushed whispers back in the UA dormitory, and uttered in low voices in the agencies he worked at as a sidekick. About how suicide cases in the country are criminally underreported—not just because of the stigma surrounding the act, but because the police allegedly make it a point to conceal such cases, away from the media’s prying eyes and before it gets blown out of proportion by the public.
Hakamada told him it was most likely to prevent the occurrence of suicide clusters, to which Bakugou scoffed instinctively, granting him a reprimanding look from his mentor.
But really, could anyone blame him?
The idea seemed stupid then.
If he killed himself for whatever reason, he sure didn’t want his death to be treated as some sort of curse, talked about only when people think no one’s watching.
There’s nothing more pitiful than fading away without leaving a single trace, after all.
But now, as he sits in the quiet dark of his agency’s office—the building silent if not for the gentle whirring of his air conditioner—Bakugou finds himself oddly grateful.
Because…
Because.
He wouldn’t know what he’d do if he had to face the press about what just happened.
He’s not sure how long he sat spaced out in his office, but by the time he’s inserting his lone copy of his key into the door knob, it’s already two hours past midnight, and the exhaustion from the day’s events has finally made itself known in the form of muscle aches and a throbbing migraine.
Bakugou doesn’t try to fight the sigh of relief that wracks his body the second he hears the lock click, his movements automatic as he pushes the door open with his side, left hand reaching out in the dark until it lands on and presses against the switch.
As if on cue, light floods the living room slash kitchen of Bakugou’s apartment unit, a sight so mundanely familiar that he doesn’t even blink at first.
Just—drags his aching feet towards the foyer where he toes off his sneakers and drops his duffel bag, which he swears he’ll collect the first thing tomorrow morning.
But then that’s when it happens.
Bakugou barely catches it—the movement at the corner of his eye—but he does.
And when he does—glance to look at it—he blanches.
Because sitting on his sofa is no other than a ghost.
˗ˏˋ while likes are appreciated, they don’t do much on tumblr! if you want to support me and writers in general, reblogs, replies, and tags are the way to go. feel free to drop an ask, too—i’d love to chat. have a nice day! ´ˎ
#i know. it's pretty short and i HATE that it's short but there just wasn't much to say without making it unnecessarily convoluted#it's just how it is lol. i hope you still give it a chance though! future chapters are gonna be longer. ish#bakugou x reader#bakugo x reader#katsuki bakugo x reader#bnha x reader#re: bakugou katsuki#eeya.docx

genuinely curious how the writers and larger dragon age audience would treat thom rainier if instead of being appropriately* repentant and putting himself in prison he blew up a major orlesian government building to instigate a chevalier rebellion or tried to have someone do some necromantic blood magic ritual involving uncertain danger and possible sacrifices to bring the innocent children he ordered killed back to life
#*appropriately as in showing the expected amount of remorse in the appropriate way in a society founded on guilt and shame#i think blackwall actually tells us a lot about how dragon age's writers conceptualize justice and deservedness of punishment#im glad we get the option to forgive him but why do we get the option when anders is exiled at best?#and later characterized as a villain by dai#when solas is willfully imprisoned at best and trapped in a horrifying psychological torture chamber at worst?#blackwall gets a full redemption happy ending if inky so chooses#and im not saying he shouldnt#i forgive him every time#but its so interesting to me that narratively speaking#he seems to earn his happy ending through submission to punishment via imprisonment#as does solas but blackwall is portrayed far more sympathetically overall#there isnt the same meta-level narrative slander and clear agenda on behalf of the writing to make you feel a certain way about his crimes#as there is with anders and solas#why? whats the difference? what did he do to buy himself that narrative goodwill?#put himself in prison? why do the writers love carceral punishment so much lmfaooo#mine#if you wanna screenshot these tags and add them to the reblog feel free#im realizing i prob just shouldve put all of this in the post but its too late now#i think theres actually a strong argument that thom does not do nearly ENOUGH to right his wrongs#where is his effort to reform the orlesian military? where is his criticism of orlesian imperialism?#how does serving in the inquisition have a direct impact on the people he harmed? it doesnt#when you compare him to someone like roy mustang#yes im comparing him to roy mustang this is my blog and you are never going to escape roy mustang comparisons here#roy's political ambitions following his war crimes are directly related to those war crimes#and his goals directly benefit the same group of people he harmed#their ancestors and family members literally#meanwhile blackwall just kind of does vague “good” deeds and gets a full redemption#he really does not make much effort to repatriate the harm he did as a soldier#he just moves on#which again.... no shade to blackwall. my inky forgives him

@t4tadrienette tags BECAUSE I NEED TO DROP THE WHOLE ITALIAN DUB LORE
I’ve already explained some things in an older post of mine, but it was quite short so I might as well add some more stuff.
AND YES. There’s a lot to unpack… 😂
I suspect the anime dub was based on the French version, although in an article I’ve read the dub director (Enrico Carabelli) said they translated from English [ various sources : x | x | x | x ].
Forget for a moment the fact that a bunch of teens sounds like a group of 30 year olds who have two mortgages on their back. They apparently have a Masters of Art in Liberal Studies with a focus on Italian Literature because they keep quoting poets like Dante or Giacomo Leopardi or Ugo Foscolo!
Okay, jokes aside, the writer that translated and did the dialogue writing adaptation (Stefano Cerioni) went for a more “original” approach that, if everything, made even more memorable and iconic the Classical Series. Hadn’t been for the dignified and courtly way the characters express themselves, I doubt it would have become so iconic. Still today, it's "cavalieri" and not "saints" for Italian fans.
To be fair, I need to add that most of these changes had been made because… they didn’t have a choice. When I said they had the script in English, I mean they had just SOME lines the characters were saying without any other context (on top of the missing lines, only a few episodes had the intro that explained what was going on). And most importantly, they had one day to translate and dub the episode because the next one it would have gone on-air. This also explains why in some occasions a line from an episode contradicts what was said in a previous one. Couldn’t they use the manga? Well, the first edition made by Granata Press was published after the anime was aired (July 1992 versus March 1990), there was no way to know where the plot was going!
In short to make up for the missed context they had to add something and that’s the reason for the literature quotes (erm. making stuff up). Were those additions faithful to the original? Not really, no. But the STYLE they had is UNSURPASSABLE: the acting alone gave such an emphasis that in the end it didn’t matter if what they were saying was correct or not. And this was thanks to the incredibly talented voice actors: despite the fact that the characters change voice actors quite a number of times during the series (ex. Aries Mu had throughout the whole animated series six different voice actors) or the same actor portraying different characters, what was missing was successfully supplemented by their skills.
Besides... since they are Knights and not Saints, all the talking like medieval knights actually makes sense here.
This is because of censorship, a violent cartoon could not be related to the Christian religion. It’s the same reason why the title “Pope” was changed to “High Priest” (Gran Sacerdote), because a villain could not be associated with the word “Pope”.
As in many anime or animated products from Japan from the 80s-90s, Italy generally changed the names to some more “Italian sounding ones”.
Often it was made to allow people to recognize the characters more easily (there was the common misconception of “all cartoons are made for kids”, while some are actually for a more mature audience) and for merchandise reasons. As far as I’m aware, back in the days the animated series were imported thanks to some Toys Factory who wanted to sell dolls, action figures, games and other merchandise in Italy (for Saint Seiya, it was Giochi Preziosi). It was in fact easier for parents to remember names like Phoenix or Andromeda rather than Ikki or Shun!
There are a few ways to do it!
Saints are simply named after their constellations or their stars in Italian:
Shun is Andromeda, Shiryu is Sirio, Seiya is Pegasus etc.
Saints have their names changed in their constellation but in English: Aphrodite is Fish, Shura is Capricorn etc.
YES, some characters got more lucky than others. Shiryu gets to have his own name while Seiya has just the name of his Constellation. This becomes a bit weird if you consider that they are called like this even before obtaining their Cloth!
Exceptions also exist.
Aldebaran got the Italian name for his constellation (Toro). And very funny, Saga is known simply as Gemini, while Kanon keeps his name without any problem. I don’t know why.
Another way was to change them for assonance:
Aiolia becomes Ioria
Mu is now Mur
The last way is to simply change the name completely:
Aiolos is Micene (don’t ask)
Hyoga is Crystal (DON’T ASK)
Shaina is Tisifone
Marin becomes Castalia
Lizard Misty is checks notes… Eris…?
Most of them can only confuse people, especially if you started by reading the manga, which usually keeps the original names (except for some cases).
To be honest, I do like some of these name changes, such as Shaina: Tisiphone is one of the Erinyes, better known as the Furies, Goddesses of Vengeance in Ancient Greek mythology (considering her first appearances… yeah… it suits her very well). Oh, in Greek Mythology, this goddess fell in love with a mortal but was rejected, so her hair turned into a poisonous snake that bit and killed her.
I really liked the Italian Dub, although I am too young to be part of that generation that grew up watching the series on television! But, if you want my personal take, the Italian anime translation should be considered its own thing. I know that even in the original Japanese version the anime and the manga are quite different, but the Italian experience can only be seen for itself.
Saint Seiya, from a pure fandom/meta pov is just fascinating.
Most people have very little consideration for the source material. The lore is mainly builded on 8 specific spin offs -none canon. The show has so much inconsistency that you have to play pick and choose about practically anything. Ages and power systems are basically stickers on a notebook, misplaced and scraped off every new trimester. There are somehow fights on what is canon or not. One of the characters sole existence ledd to the introduction of the term “yaoi” to the world. The girls in the manga are all 16 and terribly written. It’s considered as one of the most iconic shōnen ever. The older fandom is split on either the ones that accuse the new adaptations of “turning the show woke” or the ones that is like “in retrospect they were all kind of gay”. There is so much South American content about that saga it might rivaling the Japanese one. The French part may or may not be a cult for an obscure parody that is the backbone of the entire French anime parody game. The name “knights of the zodiac” definitely comes from European fans trying to guess the og name. It also, funnily enough, makes more sense on the long term than Saint Seiya. Every 10-20 years the USA will make a weird remake that always flops. It was considered a kid show in the 80s, and is still in the collective unconscious of some countries. The author’s favorite part of the fandom is The Gays.
Everything about this serie is a mess from point A to point ω. I love it.
#feathers queue#wren text tag#saint seiya#adding more lore to prev tags. Hope you don't mind 💖#also I love the Italian Fandom bc 90% of the time when I check their forums or videos they are always dissing on who's stronger#AND IT'S ALWAYS between Shaka and Saga or Shaka and Mu#and I want to break my silence here. I DON'T CARE#any StS could be god itself but Usagi/Sailor Moon would still be able to kick their ass and kill them like nothing. It's time to move on 🙏#also @mxs-space. Do we even have a decent canon source of canon material to work on begin with? 🤨#tbh that's the fun part. You could put anything in those plot-holes and it wouldn't matter at all

I've been thinking about it for a while, but the Mihoyo games fandoms are... Really less than courteous when it comes to spoilers.
I'm a loyal consumer of leaks myself, but I swear the fandom at large acts like everyone is - and not just is, but apparently should be.
There's been fanart in the HSR fandom regarding a certain character and a certain boss' relationship for weeks when not even the 3.1 main mission has touched upon it - because it comes from leaks regarding the future of the story. With the change in Genshin drip marketing schedule, it's quite literally impossible to find out who the new characters are officially because they're leaked at least a week prior and fanart (of course, untagged) starts flooding social media. There were also edits of the new 5.4 CGs everywhere as soon as the preload hit the servers, spoiling essentially everyone who wanted to wait for the version to, you know, actually be out.
Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but it makes for a very poor fandom experience when everyone acts like you're expected to follow leaks or you're the one responsible for getting things spoiled for you. It costs absolutely nothing to tag your leak-inspired or preload-datamined stuff as spoilers.
#mihoyo#genshin impact#honkai star rail#genshin#hsr#i swear it's easier to avoid leaks on the literal leak subreddits than it is on any other platform#because they actually use spoiler flairs and blurs#here? brother i opened twitter two days before genshin 5.4 hit and within 30 seconds i'd gotten all the cgs spoiled#and on tumblr ? well that one boss identity spoiler fanart sure was here and had 0 spoiler tags. good luck!#old woman yells at cloud perhaps but i find this so rude#don't expect people to follow leaks and preloads religiously. tag your stuff.#most players do in fact want to experience the story as it comes out officially and you have no right to ruin that for them#same with posting stuff related to the new versions#at least have the courtesy of tagging them as spoilers for a week or two#most people cannot in fact blaze through new content in less than 48 hours#and it's pretty upsetting seeing major plot points untagged on your dash because people just aren't considerate#i have a friend who resorted to just avoiding social media altogether until they're done with the story - which can take weeks bc life#i don't know. i miss when fandom etiquette was a thing man.#ray's records

AAAAAAH TY FOR THE TAG. Since they're all WIPs I'm gonna put what the Actual Title I'm Planning is and then also what I refer to them as when I post about them or talk about them. Also I'm gonna include a couple fandom related essays I'm working on because I don't think I have 10 fics I want to talk about LMAO
1. How Many Bags? (Tim Drake: Child of Divorce)
When Janet Lynn Drake woke in Gotham General Hospital one week after her near fatal poisoning, she did so vio lently, urgently, and with one sentence: "I want that goddamn divorce."
2. Forever Hold Your Peace (Jackbat Wedding)
"Alright everybody, quiet down, quiet down."
3. Midnights Like This (ok so i am actually so insanely proud of this opening line but it's technically two sentences long so I'm breaking format and putting the whole thing in there. sue me)
Bruce Wayne fell in love, once. Despite the fact that he has spent the past nineteen years meticulously convincing himself otherwise, Bruce Wayne fell in love under the summer sun of Smallville, Kansas, and he hasn’t done it since.
4. The World's Salad Bar (Helcat Jackbat Dickbabs Triple Date)
Dick Grayson has a headache.
5. An Asterisk Against Your Name (Asterisk AU/Jack Lives)
Jack Drake is a jealous man.
6. Untitled (Jackbat Hurt/Comfort)
"Jack Drake? How are you?
7. Dick Grayson (We've arrived at the first non-fic. this one is kinda more like an analysis than an essay like the other ones but it's still kinda got a narrative structure. anyway here's the first line)
For the first eight years of your life, you have a mother and a father, and you are happy.
8. Suicide & The Suicide Squad (Essay about depictions of suicide in Suicide Squad (1987).
When I started Suicide Squad (1987) I was not prepared for it to be about suicide.
9. Batman Comics as Gothic Literature (essay about how batman stories are textbook examples of gothic literature but we don't consider them as such because many people do not consider comics to be real literature. anyway I swear the rest of the essay is better than the opening line trust me)
When you think of gothic literature, what stories come to mind?
man I hate to stop just short of ten but I don't think I have another one I wanna talk about. that's deeply unsatisfying. ANYWAY. if anyone wants to hear more about any of these PLEASE send me an ask I love talking about my fics. don't love writing them, evidently, but I love talking about them!
no pressure tags: @taters-for-tots (I lied there is pressure for this one taters if you don't do this tag game I'll cry the people need to see your vision) @tangelotea @sydney-sargent-superfan and anyone else who wants to!

Your blog is the only blog where I feel safe enough asking this question. What do you think of Percy Jackson fans who feel as though they and the series have a moral superiority to Harty Potter ? Obviously, Harry Potter and its author are laden with questionable and sometimes straight-up hateful takes and views. But the way PJO fans constantly compare the two, its authors (even though RR is far from flawless), and the two MCs (ignoring how the two both share similarities in the fact that they are both traumatised, abused, angry teenage boys). I'm sorry that this ask got so long, but this has been annoying me for a while now.
This is an interesting question - for one, fandom fights over superiority is a concept that has been around for ages and has never been constructive. PJO and HP fandoms have been fighting in that exact way (and it has gone both ways!) for literal decades (remember, PJO turns 20 this year) so this isn't new, it's just taken on a moral flavor. Let's go over some things though (but please keep in mind i never got into HP and never read the books or fully watched the movies so my knowledge of HP is primarily pop culture absorption/secondhand from my family and friends):
Are either series perfect? No. HP absolutely is full of hateful sentiments and JKR is a hateful person and I do not respect her for that. Disney's marketing recently has absolutely fully leaned into trying to put Rick above her as a moral paragon and emphasizing how progressive he is and his support of diversity in middle grade series, despite some failings to reflect that in the actual text. Are Rick and JKR equally bad? Definitely not. Rick has had tangible good influence on adhd/dyslexia awareness that very directly impacted people like me as a neurodivergent kid going through school in the 2000s. JKR meanwhile has directly negatively impacted trans laws internationally very recently.
Rick absolutely isn't perfect, but he's vocally supportive, has made a lot of effort in the past to be inclusive, and still attempts to do so. Most of his issues simply stem from his own unaddressed internalized bigotry/biases and his research on varying topics not being great (plus poor management decisions such as not hiring a sensitivity reader actually fit for the story he's trying to tell). But he's not hateful. JKR is. JKR is very vocally hateful and bigoted and this is absolutely reflected in her work as well even in earlier HP. They are comparable in that they are both middle grade authors of easily two of the most popular middle grade fantasy (or specifically hidden world fantasy) series out right now. They are not equivalent in the slightest in their bigotry or tangible damage.
In terms of Percy versus Harry, I personally don't think they're very comparable. They share some similarities, but mostly just in that they're both the protagonists of their stories and thus serve protagonist purposes. Beyond that their use within the narrative is pretty different functionally. Their worlds' magic systems are not comparable. The hidden world aspect in both their universes isn't even comparable, since in PJO the "hidden world" aspect is very different from most hidden world fantasy formats because the entire point is that it's functionally not a hidden world. The characters themselves are very different as well - Percy's personality and the way he behaves and reacts to his environment is absolutely nothing like Harry's.
Most of the anti-HP-in-general sentiments stem from wanting to cut off JKR's notoriety, which I think is valid to want to do. And I do think there are a lot of issues with continuing to support JKR's work especially in ways that functionally promote her work or support her financially. Obviously, we will never be able to scrub HP from the cultural zeitgeist. It's just not feasible and I'm very anti-book burning so I do think it's important to acknowledge the role HP has had in pop-culture alongside acknowledging its harmful materials. HP is a text you absolutely can't death-of-the-author your way out of because a lot of the vitriol is baked into the text and worldbuilding in very overt ways - and there are plenty of other pop-culture staple novels like this. But fandom in general, at least true fandom and not mainstream fandom, is so obscure most of the time that I don't think, so long as people are not ignoring negative themes of the source material and are being thoughtful as they navigate engaging with it, that it is an inherently bad thing for HP fandom to just exist at all. It's never going to just stop existing no matter what people do. And HP fandom are not the only ones who should be thoughtful about how they engage with their source material - PJO fandom is not exempt from examining some of the problematic aspects in our own text and figuring out how to be respectful with those topics. It's just a lot easier for PJO fandom to tune it out without it being noticed because there's less of it and it's (at least sometimes) less overt. Honestly if HP fandom decided to go more down the path of a fandom like Warriors or Miraculous Ladybug, where the average sentiment is more along the lines of "Oh god no don't read/watch the source material it sucks/we stopped paying attention to it year ago and it's not relevant at all to what we're up to. We're over here functionally rewriting everything from the ground up/doing our own thing" I would very much support them in that endeavor. I do think there is merit in limiting promotion of the HP source material as much as possible, though.
Hopefully that all makes at least some amount of sense.
#pjo#riordanverse#hp#harry potter#< hm. was kind of hoping those tags would never end up on this blog#long post //#i will say i dont like. have any particular stake in this game again vis a vis i have never had any sort of connection to hp#so it doesnt hold any kind of nostalgia or affection for me. i do not care what happens to anything relating to it at all#other than potentially wanting the franchise to crumble#if anything regarding my experiences with it i potentially hold a minor grudge towards it cause one time when i was younger at Universal#i nearly fell out of whatever that one ride i think with the hippogriff cause the lapbars on it are SHIIIIIT and i am a Very Small Person#like im small now i was even smaller then#so it just would not secure far enough down to actually hold me in the seat and the ride goes like at a 90 degree angle on some turns#anyways thats like. the extent of my experience with HP. i do not care for it#but yeah never forget your history - pjo and hp fandoms have like literally always had beef#i cannot begin to describe how not new it is for either fandom to claim superiority over the other#it is literally one of those classic fandom arguments except the book fandoms flavor of it#i think one of the old big arguments as far as i remember was HP fans lording having a faithful movie adaptation over pjo fans#im pretty sure in fandomstuck they're kismeses#then again pjo never got much stuff in fandomstuck#< sentences that only make sense if you're old like me#ask#Anonymous

banging my head against the wall while i say: "relatability is not the be all end all of writing a character. saying that you don't find a character relatable/you wouldn't have made the same choices does not mean something is poorly written. you actually should go out of your way to engage with media about people who are fundamentally different from you because it helps you learn about others."
#idk i make “just like me fr” jokes about blorbos frequently but in actuality i do not share much in common with characters i like#and i *like* to get in the heads of different people even if it does take more effort#and deep down i can usually find a connection to them even if they're not “relatable”#stories exist to help you learn about yourself and others in equal measure#(anyways for your tag readers the post that inspired this was someone claiming that rt*d was a better writer than other dw showrunners#bc he writes “relatable” characters and like. yeah that's true. that's why i don't really find his characters that interesting#no salt. we all have different tastes but “relatability” is not an inherently good thing nor is it inherently bad.)#idk also thinking about a few polls of “what traits of yours do you project onto your blorbos” and while i definitely do that sometimes#mostly with disability or aspec identities. it's not essential to me liking a character#even when i do give a character a trait i have they usually think about it and respond differently than i do#and usually it's because canon has already paved a path for me#hm. i should make a poll about if you like characters who are relatable to you or not#my posts

I'd like yalls help w something, please
Regardless of its intelligence level, how many non-human creatures have Arthur and John had an emotionally positive experience with?bc I am wracking my brain and the only ones I can come up with are the lamp-eft, the buopoth, the cana, and the owl (I have yet to figure out if cana is a species or a job title but yall know who I'm talking about)
If anyone can fact-check/correct/update me on this I'd appreciate it so much 🙏
#thinking of my artistic interpretation of john & trying to come up w a sort of shapeshifter-form index as a visual cue system for his moods#so like for example when he's super focused on leading or guiding arthur somewhere I'd draw him as a little lamp-eft flitting around#or when he's pondering something specifically related to his past as hastur he'd slightly resemble a peacock#(but only slightly bc while he's seen peacock imagery and is very aware of the symbolism n stuff hes. never actually seen a real peacock b4#when hes feeling threatened or uneasy because of something Arthur is doing specifically his humanoid default form gets ram horns and eyes#bc of ep 26 :)#and how that ties into the pits :)#stuff like that#any tios tricks or suggestions? id love to hear yalls thoughts <3#i ahould clarify this would be for a hypothetical post-season 5 au#john does *not* have his own body or visual a defined form other people can see; itd just be cool visual cues for readers bc in my head its#a series of comic pages#uhhh ok how do i tag this#malevolent#malevolent podcast#malevpod#arthur lester#john doe malevolent#idk what else to put fuck it we ball#lucifanbabbles#zizistuff

im actually really good at admitting when i dont know things its just that people keep talking to me about things that i know a lot about and am objectively correct on
#this is a cartoony exaduration of a very real sentiment#whoch is that im often told that i come off like i 'need to be right about everything'#but i have achived a place in my life where i recognize when i dont have all the info or perspective nessesary need to Listen#and that i dont have to have a strong opinon abt everything#and that admitting that i lack knowledge or opinion rather than masking that with false confidence is better in the long run#bc it dosent put you on defense - makes you more receptive to new information + perspectives + corrections#its just that people will try to tell me their opinions about lawn mowers and im not going to pretend like i dont know more than them#when i do. which happens to be all the time#never met a person whos done as much reaserch on lawns + lawn care industry and related issues such as sore machines#(small off road engines)#i know theyre out there but the chances of me finding them is small and i have yet to do so#and then people try and give me their opinions abt this subject and if THEY dont shut up and listen i go rabid#like i know when its my turn to shut up and listen but sometimes im right and OTHER people need to be shutting up and listening#but also even outside of that i tend to come off as harsh/agressive/judgmental even when relaying info that im not obsessive abt like lawns#its the autism. i just word things blunt and talk with flat affect and dont know how to soften the blow well when correcting people#or even just adding my own perspective + ideas to convo without intent of 'correcting' anyone#such is life i suppose#just so long as nobody tries to tell me lawns are ethical ill be fine#<- remembers when i made a post that accidently got attention abt this subject and melted down#bc the strangers on the internet dont understand that this is my WHOLE THINF#if you knew me in real life youd understand. its my passion#text#im putting this is the lawn tag actually#lawn posting

Hi. Idk how to start this, so let's just get right to the chase.
I had the silly little idea to make an alt blog here on Tumblr, that is solely dedicated to my silly little project SEKAI AU ideas for based on many different cards. Not full fledged storylines or anything of the sort, just some basic ideas.
I have a few reasons for this; A) I enjoy making au ideas, but I cannot for the life of me actually do anything substantial with them, B) I've shared, like, two au ideas here on my main blog before and a few people seemed to like those, and C) I want to take requests on this blog, which would give me the chance to branch out to au ideas and aus involving ships (mostly romantic, but also platonic) that I wouldn't have otherwise.
(Also, these ideas will all be free to use so long as you credit and/or tag me. And while I do have some personal "don't"regarding requests, I believe they're pretty small and outside of them, you can go hog wild.)
Still gotta actually get all the rules and stuff a bit more finalized before I can actually make the blog and junk, but I decided to do a poll first to see if people would even be interested in something like that. So...
(It's totally fine if the answer is no btw. If I get more no's than yes's, then I'll just keep posting any au ideas i really love on here occasionally. This is just to see if people would be interested in at least following a blog like that.)
(Also, I don't think I shared a lot of details regarding this, so if you have any questions you want to ask at any point, please do, and I'll answer them to the best of my ability!)
Have a wonderhoy day :D
#sorry if this makes no sense#im bad at explaining things lol#do not be afraid to ask for clarification#also i will make i post on here announcing when/if this becomes an actual side blog#dw about that#fuck how do i tag#project sekai#pjsk#prsk#prsekai#pjsekai#tumblr polls#polls#also if you'd be willing to reblog so more people can see this#id greatly appreciate it#no pressure though i promise#ALSO speaking of aus#i am hoping to flesh out my phantom thief au a little more#i still don't have all#but im slowly but surely working on it lol#might even get some related art done hopefully#yayyy#rayne says stuff

I feel like Lindon in this scene whenever I get an Activity notification that I decide to follow up on, trawling through an entire page because someone liked a specific post of mine
#cradle series#madraposting#And I actually have a tag for when I do this (or for posts related to doing this):#activity forensics#and anyway I was just rereading some of the Cradle books for quotes to put in the stupid Cradle x Parkour Civilization fusion#And just reblogged another activity forensics post#So since both of those were on the mind — this quote flashed into my vision#Edit: by the way this is in chapter 9 of Underlord (Cradle book 6)
