A Hong Bao (红包) or Ang Pow in Hokkien is a gift of money packed into a red packet. Red is considered a symbol of luck, life and happiness. Hong baos are given as tokens of good wishes during auspicious occasions such as Chinese New Year and weddings.

There are no clear literary sources to trace the origin of the red envelope tradition. In China, during the Qin Dynasty, the elderly would thread coins with a red string. As the society progresses, yā suì qián (压岁钱) was evolved to be wrapped by red papers, since the red color symbolizes good fortune in Chinese tradition. Hong Bao (红包) previously called 压岁钱, which initially expresses the meaning of "money suppressing evil spirits". It's a tradition that during Chinese New Year, red envelopes are typically given by the married to the unmarried, most of whom are children. Because it's traditionally believed that children are easy to get hurt by evils, so people will give them 压岁钱 to protect them and that allow the younger generation to spend their year peacefully and safely.

Asian Lost Boys Personal Names!
Personal names tend to vary from culture to culture in terms of usage, but essentially it's someones "Asian name" as opposed to their English name. They're typically used by family members and, on occasion, very close friends because (in my experience) using them is intimate. The characters will still HAVE their English names, but The Lost Boys and family members (the Emersons and the Frogs) will Mostly refer to each other by their personal names.
DISCLAIMER: I'm Taiwanese, therefore I'm more savvy to East Asian cultures, particularly Chinese and Japanese. If anyone who is more knowledgeable about Filipino, Hmong, Thai, Indian, or Vietnamese cultures sees something they want to critique/has more culturally accurate suggestions, I encourage messages/comments/replies!
David: Huang Zhao-Yi
Culture: Taiwanese, of Chinese descent Loose Pronunciation: Hw-ah-ng Sh-ow-yee Surname: Huang, meaning "yellow, to fall through" Personal name: Zhao-Yi, Zhao meaning "bright, luminous" and Yi meaning "happy, joyful, harmony" Notes: I was originally going to name David "Hou Yi" after a mythological Chinese archer because OG Hou Yi destroys 9/10 of the original suns (long story) and there's a version where he and his wife Chang'e become immortal/gods, but there are so many different versions of the story that I decided against it. I also decided that I wanted him to be a Farm Boy™ and naming him after a god seemed a little strange imo.
Paul: Paolo FACUNDO LIWANAG
Culture: Filipino Loose Pronunciation: Pow-low FAK-OON-DO LEE-WAN-AG Personal name: Paolo, meaning "small" Surnames: FACUNDO meaning "talkative", LIWANAG meaning "light" Notes: A lot of Filipino names are Spanish or Italian with biblical roots because of colonization in the 1500s, so I wanted to keep his personal name semi-similar to his English name since it was already biblical. Honestly I could've left it as "Paul" but what's the fun in that? I'm not too sold on his surnames so they might change later and I may try to find a Tagalog name instead for his personal name, we'll see.
Marko: YANG Vam Meej
Culture: White Hmong, from Laos Loose Pronunciation: YANG Va Mae Clan name: YANG, associated with the ram and bear Personal name: Vam Meej, meaning "to prosper, succeed" Notes: Hmong names in particular are a Struggle for me since most of the Hmong people I know are second generation like me and either don't really know their personal names or we're not close enough for me to ask. I am familiar with the concept of clan names though. Marko's name is definitely subject to change in the future (I might pick a clan name more associated with birds just for fun who knows).
Dwayne: Khemkhaeng LUANG
Culture: Thai Loose Pronunciation: Kehm-key-ng LOO-ANG Personal name: Khemkhaeng, meaning "strong" Old personal name: Kasem, meaning "happiness, pure joy" Surname: LUANG, meaning "royal, venerable" Notes: It's common for Thai people to change their names after something either significant or bad happens to them, hence Kasem. I'm only making note of it to alleviate confusion in the event that I decide to do some stuff regarding backstories, no one will refer to him as Kasem otherwise. Also, surnames are still relatively new to Thailand and they were only introduced in the 20th century, so Dwayne gets a shorter surname in comparison to modern Thai surnames (which are required to be unique, hence the longer modern surnames) since I have him and the other boys being born in the 1880s.
Star: Ruchika Chawla
Culture: Indian Loose Pronunciation: Roo-chee-ka Chow-la Personal name: Ruchika, meaning "shining, beautiful, desirous, brilliance" Surname: Chawla, meaning "rice" Notes: I found the name Ruchika and immediately thought of Star ngl, I didn't even consider other names for her. It was like love at first sight. I think a lot of stuff with Star just clicked when I was doing research for her name and design, it just suited her so well. I did have her surname written down wrong in my personal notes so I'm glad I didn't post her character sheet immediately lmao
Laddie: Nino HALILI DEL ROSARIO
Culture: Filipino Loose Pronunciation: Nee-no HA-LEE-LEE DAY ROSE-ARI-O Personal name: Nino, meaning "little boy" Surname: HALILI meaning "successor", DEL ROSARIO meaing "of the rosary" Notes: I went so back and forth on his surnames it's not even funny, but I think I'm happier with Laddie's surnames in comparison to Paul's. "Nino" felt really obvious and clicked really well just like Star's name did, though I did consider a few other names that I don't have written down anywhere. Nino was just superior because he's simply a little guy.
Michael: EMERSON Manh Tien
Culture: Vietnamese Loose Pronunciation: EMERSON Man Tee-en Surname: EMERSON, inherited from white father Middle name: Manh, meaning "first-born" Personal name: Tien, meaning "fairy, celestial being" Notes: I'll be honest, the main contibuting factor behind Michael's personal name was how he was almost named "Moonbeam" during his mom's hippie phase. I have this idea where their dad was white and insisted on using exclusively their English names, and Michael wouldn't initially like his personal name because it feels girly to him anyway, but he'd grow to cherish his name and culture after meeting the lost boys <3
Sam: EMERSON Trong Binh
Culture: Vietnamese Loose Pronunciation: EMERSON Ch-ung Bin Surname: EMERSON, inherited by white father Middle name: Trong, meaning "second-born" Personal name: Binh, meaning "peaceful" Notes: I think overall for the Emerson family I was most concerned with meanings, which wasn't necessarily the case for the boys. Sam is the most peaceful in the sense that he discouraged the Frog brothers from killing Marko, even though he failed. Like Michael, I think his personal name is something that he grows into when he starts making friends, but would use his English name when first coming to Santa Carla.
Lucy: VINH Lan Huong
Culture: Vietnamese Loose Pronunciation: VIN Surname: VINH, meaning "glory" Middle name: Lan, meaning "orchid" Personal name: Huong, meaning "pink rose" Notes: Naming Lucy after flowers just felt right. Let it be known that I have serious beef with hippies, but I feel like she still had a well-intentioned hippie phase and this just adds to it. In Vietnamese culture, women don't change their surnames after marriage (as far as I'm aware) which I think would be a contributing factor in her divorce with her white all-American husband.
Grandpa: VINH Mac Dieu
Culture: Vietnamese Loose Pronunciation: VIN Mac Dee-oo Surname: VINH, meaning "glory" Middle name: Mac, meaning "nothing, nonexistent" Personal name: Dieu, meaning "mysterious, subtle" Notes: Grandpa! Needed! A! Name! He doesn't have one in the original! I'm basically saying he's not subtle about his knowledge of vampires and he's not trying to be subtle, it's just that no one ever asked. I think I tried to pick older-sounding names for him but it's been a little while since I picked these and I don't remember if I'm honest.
Edgar: Kaeru Matsuo
Culture: Japanese Loose Pronunciation: Keh-roo Mat-soo-oh Surname: Kaeru, meaning "frog" Personal name: Matsuo, meaning "pine tree, life" Notes: I named the Frog brothers after the famous Japanese poet Matsuo Basho because their English names remind me of Edgar Allan Poe, so I thought it'd be kind of funny. Matsuo is the surname of the poet, but I felt that Matsuo suited Edgar more than Alan. The surname I picked for the Frogs was obvious, I don't think anything else other than some variation of "frog" would've worked.
Alan: Kaeru Basho
Culture: Japanese Loose Pronunciation: Keh-roo Ba-show Surname: Kaeru, meaning "frog" Personal name: Basho, meaning "banana tree" Notes: Alan got the pen name of Matsuo Basho, who also went by "Sobo" and "Tose". I debated on giving him Matsuo's true given name, which is Kinsaku meaning "to be happy" but Matsuo Basho is better known as Basho and it's much funnier for this very serious 15-16 year old to be named "banana tree".
Sorry if the formatting is weird, I'm trying to make it as reader friendly as possible on account of my own dyslexia. Please let me know if the blocks of text blend in with each other too much lmao

Favorite Lines from Every Character in Hazbin Hotel
@bloodypeachblog @fatgumsurpremacy-remastered @moths-and-mantids
Charlie:
Absolutely! This place is about second chances, and who deserves one more than this slithery… slippery… special little man!
Vaggie:
There is nothing stronger than the trust between comrades in arms. Buckle up, buttercups, because today you boys become men!
Angel Dust:
Like I said, you don't know me. Sex ain't the only thing I'm good at.
Alastor:
Just because you see a smile don't think you know what's going on underneath. A smile is a valuable tool, my dear. It inspires your friends, keeps your enemies guessing, and ensures that no matter what comes your way, you're the one in control.
Husk:
Maybe I'd treat you better if you were real, and not some bullshit version of yourself, always pushin' my boundaries! Lemme tell ya, nobody in that hotel cares who you are. How famous, how hot, so you might as well just... cut the act.
Niffty:
I really like them, Alastor. They let me put on roach puppet shows without booing!
Sir Pentious:
I, don't want to live without my minions. Nobody catch me! *falls backwards*
[Vaggie and Charlie catch him together.]
Damn it.
Valentino:
That slippery twink is gonna remember who owns him. I'm gonna FUCK everyone in that rancid shit hole, I swear to god!
Vox:
Oh god. Here I go, Valentino. Just another fucking day with Val. Hey hey hey. Fuck my life
Velvette:
Ugh. No. Unacceptable. You're fired. What is this? WRIST RUFFLES?! Is this 1750?! Burn it like the witches who wore it!
Adam:
To think someone as worthless as you landed Lilith's little hottie. 'Grats on that I guess.
Lute:
Rip Vaggie's cunt mouth out her ass!
Lucifer:
Well, your first wife didn't seem to hate what I had to offer...or the second! Bow chicka pow pow!
Rosie:
It can be difficult to admit to things you're not proud of, especially if those things hurt the ones you love. She fucked up, sure. She's flawed. But, hey, who down here isn't? If there's anything I've learned, it's that words are cheap, but actions, they speak for the truth. So, what have her actions said?
Mimzy:
That’s the story most people know, but underneath it all… he’s a total sweetie! Put on some jazz and pour a couple fingers of rye and he becomes a kitten!
Cherri Bomb:
Wait, I'm only here for Ange—
[Charlie hands Cherri Bomb a large stack of money, and Cherri instantly made her decision since she's getting paid with a watt of cash.]
—Ooh! Never mind, Let's GO!
Carmilla:
You have a giant X over your eye and wield an angelic spear. It's not rocket science. Before you found out about me, did you know angels could be harmed?

(tiny snippet following at least ten company policies just because it's a bcc match so i've got writing time lol)
"Jack, perfect." Matthew gestures to the wheely chair in front of the desk. They'd had to special order it, but it's nice to have for slightly uncomfortable conversations like these. Helps the talent feel appreciated. "Please. Take a seat. You saw our memo about having this little pow-wow."
"You sent a Google calendar invite," Jack says. He frowns, but he sits, so they're already heading in the right direction. Matthew gives Nicholas a discreet thumbs up.
"Which you didn't RSVP to, by the way," Matthew says, leaning against the mahogany desk and lacing his fingers together, "but that's fine, we knew you'd be here."
"So," Nicholas says. He takes up a similar pose against the other side of the desk.
Jack looks between them, expression dubious. "What is this about?"
"What do you think this is about, Jack?" Nicholas asks.
"Y'know, it's generally considered good practice to tell people what the meetings are about before they get here."
"Well, maybe you would have gotten that information if you'd just clicked the 'Yes' button on the invitation," Matthew says.
Jack's eyebrows hike up. "Touché."
"You haven't submitted any paperwork yet," Nicholas tells him.
"What paperwork do I need besides my direct deposit?" Jack asks.
Matthew lifts his hand, index finger extended. "Okay. I know you were out for a little while—no, no, clearly that's something we are factoring in here, and that you're still getting used to the new policies in place, but I sent you the forms five times."
"The direct deposit form? Cause I filled that out, like, forever ago."
Nicholas sighs, long and heavy. "Jack. These things need to handled in the proper way. There are approvals for relations like this."
Jack eyes him, and Matthew doesn't trust it. He's pretty sure Jack knows exactly what this meeting is about. But all Jack asks is, "What kind of relations?"
"Intimate relations."
"Ah." Jack sits back in the wheely chair, hoisting one ankle up to rest it on his opposite knee. He looks far too at ease for someone who seems to have ignored every email Matthew has sent for the past week. "So that's what this is about."
"Jack," Matthew tries reasonably, "these things need to be kept... tidy."
"Oh, I already cleaned the bus, if that's what you're worried about."
Nicholas's eye twitches; a concerning little tic. "That's not what this is about."
"It's maybe a tiny bit what this is about," Matthew concedes. "But mostly, you haven't signed the forms. You haven't even signed the policy."
"What policy, the cleaning policy?"
He's being obtuse on purpose, Matthew just knows it. "The dating policy."
"I'm not signing that," Jack says, without any real expression.
"Okay, first of all, it's initials, not a signature," Nicholas says, "and second of all, you have to."
"We're not dating," Jack says, "so, no, I don't."
Matthew groans. "Jack. Please be reasonable. There are procedures in place to—"
"Procedures?"
Matthew hates being interrupted, but fine, fine, he'll humor this. "Procedures in case things go... poorly, and then we have to mitigate things backstage."
"So everyone has signed this?" Jack asks. "Everyone? Like, what about... Ang and Ruby?"
"Ang and Ruby are married," Nicholas says.
Jack's face scrunches, and Matthew would like to head this off before it goes further, so he says, hurriedly, "Listen, if you would just initial the policy for your personnel file, and then submit the paperwork for approv—"
"Yeah, no," Jack says. "We're not dating. I'm not doing that."
"Jack." Matthew is dangerously close to losing his cool. "I need you to—"
Jack's phone rings, maximum volume. As though he is not currently in an important meeting with the EVPs, he fishes it out of his jeans and then holds one finger up in the sign of silence. "Yeah, gotta cut this short, sorry—hey babe. What're you doin'?" A pause. "You're lighting a couch on fire? Is it your couch?" Another pause. He stands up, phone against his ear, without giving either Matthew or Nicholas another glance. "Well, these feel like important questions to ask, is all." Another pause as he heads towards the door. "Yeah, obviously I want you to send photos, this sounds awesome. I'm super jealous."
"Jack!" Nicholas calls. "Who the hell is that?"
"Oh, my mom," Jack returns, and then waves over his shoulder in a half-hearted goodbye as he leaves.
The room is silent for a moment. Then Nicholas turns to Matthew, mouth dipping down. "That was not his mother."
"That was absolutely not his mother," Matthew agrees. "Shit."
"What the hell are we gonna do about this?" Nicholas asks.
"I don't know!" Matthew rubs at his temples. They hadn't put any of this into the time schedule, and now he's all out of whack. "I don't know. Just... let's think about this. Figure out a plan."
"Reconvene in thirty," Nicholas says. "Come with ideas for the board."
"Right." It'll be fine. They'll brainstorm. They'll get some strategy in place. No worries. No problem. "Right, that's good. Okay, thirty minutes. Back here."

exciting times ahead. ;)
Jeonghan never thought he’d feel this feeling anymore. This giddy feeling while waiting for someone? Ni hindi nga ito date. Sasabay lang naman sa kanya si Lola. Pero he’s here, nakaporma at ginamit pa ang pabango ni Joshua. (which by the way, sabi dati ni Jeonghan, di niya trip.)
“May date ka ba?” Tanong ni Joshua kay Jeonghan. He smirked at his friend.
“Wala. May medical mission kami sa Bataan.”
“With? Ba’t di ako nainform?”
“Nag-fill up ka ba nung form?”
“May ganon na? Hahaha so you volunteered?”
Joshua squinted his eyes and looked at his friend with a pang-aasar look. “Bait mo naman, Han. Nagv-volunteer ka na ah!”
“Kahit dati pa natin to ginagawa? Issue ka masyado.”
Jeonghan then received a messaged from Lola. “Done na pows me. San ka, Doc?”
Joshua should’ve captured it! He saw his friend smiled (unconsciously) while looking at the notification on his phone.
“Alis na ko. Chismoso mo, Hong! Sumbong kita kay Cari eh!” Jeonghan said in a playful tone.
“Saan ka na niyan? Teka nga, ba’t ba nandito ka? Di ka naman pumupunta dito!”
“Basta! ‘Wag kang lalabas! Mamaya ka na lumabas!”
Joshua swore he heard the other door opened and closed! Someone was renting Cari’s unit, it was one of Chan’s cousin. So he took a peek at the hole, and saw Jeonghan get the girl’s first aid kit and carried it himself.
He overheard them talk while Jeonghan and the girl waited for the elevator.
“Alam mo, pa-fall ka! Akin na yan! Di naman mabigat yan!”
“Ako na nga diba?”
“Papansin ka ah. Ba’t ka ba nandito? Di ka naman taga dito! Sabi nung maintenance, yung may-ari ng building yung sa tapat na unit ko… Oh my god.”
“OA mo, Lo. Nandiyan si Josh. May dinaanan lang ako. Dumating din kasi kaibigan niya.”
“Ah oo! Kwento nga nila Dia bumalik daw si Doc Hong. Baka single ‘yung friend. Reto mo nga ako!”
Binatukan ng palabiro ni Jeonghan ang kausap nito. “Si Wonwoo? Single ‘yun pero di kita ire-reto.”
Nanlaki ang mata ni Lola. “Oh my. Familiar! Alam ko kakilala ni Chan ‘yan eh. Pogi din ata yan! Tingin nga!”
“Akala ko ba sakin ka may gusto? Ba’t hinahanap mo pa itsura ni Wonwoo?”
“Ay, oa mo ha. Di porket alam ng buong mundo na may gusto ako sa’yo, bawal na mapogi-an sa iba. Demanding mo din, Doc.”
Lola fanned herself and looked at the other side. Whereas Jeonghan? Ayun, naka-kagat labi at pinipigilan ang ngiti.
“Yoon Jeonghan. Exciting times ahead. Lagot ka samin nila Cho.”

10th Birthday
We celebrated Grace’s birthday a day earlier because the following day was her first day in Standard 4. It was strawberry cake again and I ordered it from Jazmine’s aunt. We celebrated in a western restaurant in Melaka because Grace wanted it so. Alice, Por Por, Ah Ma and Ah Kong joined us but Aaron had to work.
Alice, Por Por and Ah Ma all gave Grace an ang pow, while we got her in-line skates. She started learning a bit but it’s hard. She can stand on them and knows how to fall but doesn’t know how to skate yet. Biow Huei bought her beads to make bracelets, earrings and necklaces and she made one bracelet on the same day.

Description: In 1968, George Lanigan leaves the University of Maryland and sets off on the journey of his life. He volunteers to serve his country in the Vietnam War and enlists in the army where he becomes an elite Special Forces advisor in a top-secret program. The United States is clandestinely training the Cambodian Army, Forces Armees Nationales Khmeres, and Lanigan is at the heart of the mission. In this personal memoir, LTC George R. Lanigan, USA (Retired), adapts his forty-year-old letters and correspondence to his parents into an emotionally compelling and suspenseful narrative that relates his daily life of survival and political tension. It's an inside, firsthand look at a rare, and previously classified, Vietnam War experience. But its scope reaches beyond the war itself and illuminates the realities soldiers face returning home, building a life, and even visiting war zones four decades later. Its openness and honesty will resonate with war veterans, their friends and family members, those suffering post-traumatic stress disorder, and people of all ages who are interested in American history. Readers will learn about war life, a volatile political environment, and how personal experiences weave together to create the person one eventually becomes.
