Art Project 3: One Minute Supercut
Title~ some•day
I've recently visited the CVA 2022 BFA spring student exposition to expose myself to other artists' work and gain confidence/inspiration for my submission for the fall applicants' work. As an artist, I constantly compare myself to others' work and how I can improve myself along the way. I just transferred to Metro this semester because I want to pursue something that makes me and others feel passionate about the work I can create. Getting accepted to the BFA program is a big step forward in developing your character and work as an artist. So that's why for this project I chose different clips of multiple students' work from the spring exhibition to put into one coherent viewing clip that has a calming vibe. I knew the beginning and end of the video had to be connected somehow and thought that some trippy colors could add to the viewing experience. I took the artistic liberty to rename each clip by the emotions or thoughts that occurred when critiquing their work. I included two different quotes or affirmations as an introduction and end of the video. These sayings I use daily to help ease my anxiety and allow myself to remember we are all just cells floating on a rock in the middle of a galaxy.

Art Project 3: One Minute Supercut
Beyonce the GOAT
With the conclusion of Women’s History month, I dreamed it necessary to dedicate this super cut to Beyoncé Knowles Carter, who made history this past February as the most Grammy winning female in history.
Beyonce has made in appearance in several of my projects this semester so it is no surprise that I am a stan.
I wanted to dedicate this to Beyonce for more reasons that me just being a fan, however. In order to make history and accomplish all that she has during her 20+ year, requires a work ethic that most do not posses.
Furthermore, Beyonce has transformed into more than just a recording artist. She is a philanthropist, activist, and feminist. She is also a pillar in the Black community for more reasons than I can explain.
She is a class act and deserves to go down in history.

FEATURE: Happy 10th Anniversary To Every Anime Opening Ever Made (The Video)
I don't remember where I was at when I first watched "Supercut - Every Anime Opening Ever Made," but I do remember the inescapable truth it showed me after I watched it. Maybe I was on Gaia Online or some other forum when someone posted the link and asked "have you seen this?" I started the video and saw the seagulls flying in the sky. Then the white text on a black background showed up, saying that the following was in every single anime opening sequence...
The montage began! Cameras heading towards the sun! Going right into the character's eyes! The running! This dude was right: This stuff IS in every anime opening!
youtube
This Youtube supercut turns ten years old today, and if you were in the anime fandom around 2010 you had probably seen this video at some point. Now with 3 Million views, I think the reason it resonated with so many people is that for as much anime we watched, we probably noticed these trends but didn't make the full connection until it was fully presented in front of us. Regardless of genre or tone, there was this underlying connective tissue across dozens of shows that we may or may not have seen before. And shown in such a slick and edited fashion provided a connection across the shows we love. While videos like this are likely uploaded onto Youtube now more than I can imagine (maybe even right now as I write this!), this supercut was the original, back in a time when fandom was certainly a lot smaller and growing. Even though Youtube was becoming more of a hub for anime content (as we were slowly getting out of the Bleach-episode-split-into-three-parts era), fandom was more split in the sense that everyone had their own particular hub or forum they claimed home. There was no AniTwitter or Youtube Community tab to trudge around and find out what wider fandom was talking about. And yet, everyone seemed to have come around and appreciated this, a small stepping stone to what the community would end up becoming today. I was just going to celebrate this little piece of fandom fun with an article going down memory lane, but I decided to try to reach out to Derek Lieu, the original creator of the video, to see if he had anything to add for this retrospective. And luckily he got back to me really quickly! Can you first introduce yourself and what you do? My name is Derek Lieu, I currently live in Brooklyn NY and I make video game trailers! I’ve worked on trailers for Firewatch, Subnautica, Spelunky 2, Ooblets, Dead Cells, Half-Life: Alyx, and a lot more. How did you get the idea to make the "Every Anime Opening Ever Made" video? When I learned the American X-Men animated series from the 90s had alternate opening sequences made for when it aired in Japan I became fascinated by what made those openings so distinctly Japanese. I don’t remember my precise thought process, but I started downloading textless versions of anime openings from YouTube to start, and started sorting the footage. I think the one exception I made was for Neon Genesis Evangelion because I couldn’t not include it. About how long do you think it took to edit? Believe it or not the whole project took about an afternoon and maybe part of the evening. Downloading all the openings took longer than the actual editing. After downloading them I sorted the different tropes into categories like I normally do when editing stuff. Once the footage was sorted I barely moved anything around except to adjust for music sync and also where each chunk of tropes fit into the video. I used a specific Ayumi Hamasaki song which was used for the cel-shaded Molly Star Racer trailer (which much later became Oban Star Racers). The original remix song is much longer so I edited it down to about 3.5 minutes.
youtube
Is there anything in particular that stood out to you when you were making it? (Outside of so many shows using the same shots, obviously haha) I think the main thing that occurred to me is that so many of these tropes are just great ways to create cool moving images using as little animation as possible, but which still feel dynamic and fun to watch. One interesting bit of trivia is Trigun is one of the few series whose opening is footage from episodes cut together. This was by far the exception to the rule. I remember this video very fondly back in the earlier Youtube days, and it has 3 Million views as to date. Did you ever expect it to be that successful? Haha, not in the slightest. It seems the videos I give the least amount of thought always get the most number of views and the ones I spend a lot of time get the fewest. What do you think is your favorite and least favorite "trope" in the original video? I like the head turns. I didn’t even give attention to that one when I started the project, but it very quickly revealed itself as one of the most common ones. I don’t think I have a least favorite; they’re all fun to watch. One of the funniest is a person reaching their hand out to someone on the ground; I like this one because it’s so incredibly specific.
youtube
Do you still watch any anime? And if you do, do you see any of those same shots/frames/movements in particular still being used today? I don’t currently watch any anime, but I assume a lot of openings still use a lot of these tropes. Because they cover everything from standing still to running. I later made a video for unique anime openings because there are some which have really great stylized art and interesting images. I also made one for classic anime from the 80s and earlier which helped me see where a lot of the tropes originates. Do you have any other thoughts on the video looking back on it ten years later? Reading comments from people who watched it as a kid and now are rewatching it as adults makes me feel old, haha. Also, people keep telling me I “forgot” an anime. I once tallied all the anime people say I excluded and the list was far far longer than the number of anime in my video. Also, a lot of people mention anime which released after the video was made :P One bit of trivia, I didn’t include any Naruto because at the time I thought it would’ve been funny to exclude the most popular anime at the time. Sorry, Naruto fans. We'd like to thank Derek Lieu for not only making the video, but also for taking the time to speak to us. You can find him on Twitter and Youtube.

Newbie: I'm a newcomer to vidding and wondered if I could have advice to learn the ropes.
If someone could help me learn the ropes that'd be lovely. https://vidding.dreamwidth.org/395455.html
The evolution of #vidding trends be like
2012 - heavy colorings, catchy songs, crossfades, overlayers, texts
2019 - almost to no coloring, clean cuts, minimal editing, trailer-ish instrumentals
2020 - no coloring, no editing, no music, just play the damn episode would ya?

Do you ever have an amazing idea for a vid but lack the confidence to actually make it
cuz you’ve never done something like it before and don’t want to screw it up? Now try having that for like 4 different ideas...so frustrating #Vidding #VidderProblems https://twitter.com/hollywoodgirl05/status/1137771341635964928
You know the feeling when start project so inspired and then get to some part of song and you just can't move past it? For weeks... And then start to hate whole song and part of project you already finished. Yeah. #Vidding #Viddingproblems https://twitter.com/TheMica993/status/1134759868605390848
Reading it made me think of lumi_nation and other fellow vidders who see & hear music as movement & color, hear color as music, and so on. There are many of us. We don’t often talk about it outside of con suites and panels, but we exist in our special little universes. #vidding https://twitter.com/Bonibaru/status/1132780458494910464
Vidding and/as Pedagogy Vids explore themes related to the source material(s) they remix and rework. In a vid, the juxtaposition of moving images and music, as well as careful sequencing, cutting, and pattern construction, work together to communicate the vidder’s messages.

Vidding Styles There is a difference between completely ripping off a style to the point it's just the same video with a different song and taking inspiration, then adding your own spin. While nobody has 'ownership' over a style.... I'm tired of seeing basically the same videos everywhere.

call me old fashioned but I am really not a fan of the youtube vidding trend..... of putting dialogue over the whole fucking thing. I can deal with a bit here and there but for a 3+ minute song?? I imagine you picked the song for a reason, let me hear the lyrics!!

Instagram limits the number of external links you can use in a post. Up until last year, they didn't support longer vids or links to external websites, preferring to keep the material "in house." Requesting assistance in tagging vids using Excel (2013/2016/2019). If you have Office 365 this would be ideal as we can collaborate in real time similar to what you see in those ads for Google docs co-authoring where you see the names of people typing as flags. Additionally, if you have ever wanted to get up to speed with Excel for work or to get work this could be one way of doing so while also watching and tagging vids. I teach Excel as well

How we make games - about workflow, things from the past and lessons we learned
I like to seperate the games we make into two categories: Game Jam games and actual™ games. For those of you who might not be familiar with the term – a Game Jam is basically an event where people make a game in a very short amount of time, like two days just for example. In most cases there‘s also a given theme the game should (but must not) match. But that‘s not the kind of stuff I want to talk about today, let‘s save that for another post (we participated in three jams last month so I have a lot to recount :‘D) Let‘s focus on the latter – the actual™ games. We‘ve made two so far. Intra-System: Trust Issues, our very first game, and Flufftopia. When it comes to the work process these two have nothing in common though. That‘s because we were a three person team when working on Intra-System. Not long after we started working on the next project (which was Devastated: Andrew‘s Dictaphone) we parted ways with our former programmer due to some personal stuff. Also Devastated was meant to be a completely different game at that point, but I‘ll save that for another post too (damn, while writing this I get so many ideas for future posts :‘D). And at that point we decided to put Devastated on ice because we needed to restructure the team. I only made the graphical stuff for Intra-System and Daniel wrote the story, made music/sounds and coordinated the overall workflow. We decided to stay a two person team and not search for a new programmer simply because we realized that doing everything on our own seemed to work best for us. We also wanted to be as independent as possible. Well, that meant that one of us needed to start learning something programming related though.
At that point I sat down and basically spent two months doing nothing else but gathering as much knowledge as possible about the Unity engine. We decided to pick Unity for various reasons: 1. Real™ programming, a framework etc. wasn‘t an option because I had no programming background at all and it would have taken too long to learn that much. We wanted to be able to continue with games ASAP. 2. We were mostly focusing on 2D games at that point and Unity seemed to provide everything we needed. We of course could also have chosen a more 2D focused engine like GameMaker or RPG Maker but we wanted something that was capable of 3D too because we knew we would want to make 3D stuff in the future and learning different engines for both seemed redundant. 3. Unity‘s pricing policy was the one we most likely could live with. So that’s why we didn’t end up using Unreal and whatnot. So yeah, I made a very small very shitty clicker/idle/incremental game (why are there so many names for these?) in the learning process which really isn‘t worth talking about. Let‘s just say that Daniel was bald at that time and I took this as a theme for the game. The game is completely in German though because I didn‘t think that I would ever show it to more than 10 people.
And around that time we came up with the idea for Flufftopia. We really enjoy experimenting with existing genres so we thought of ways to mess with the clicker game thing a bit. Eventually Daniel came up with the basic idea for the story and the twist. I don‘t want to tell too much because it would take off a lot of the experience – you can check it out yourself if you want to. It‘s free and should only take you 20-40 minutes. The first thing I wanted to have was an artstyle. When talking about the idea I imagined something supercute and I think I didn‘t fail that too hard. First of all I drew a background to get an overall feeling of the direction I wanted it to take. At that point I didn‘t really know where the background would eventually end up. Now it‘s the main menu.
The designs for the unlockable buildings and the basic idea for the Fluffs, the residents of Flufftown (I still love how fluffy all of this sounds ♥) followed.
After that I felt all of the fluffiness deep in my heart and was ready to start putting things together. Fortunately I was able to reuse some code from the first clicker game thing so I had some basic stuff going on pretty fast. But then we started putting in the story aspects and more features… and that‘s when everything started to go south. Let me tell you one thing: simply following tutorials and trying to figure stuff out on your own are two very different animals. Especially if you basically don‘t have a clue of what you are doing there.
It‘s working! But why? It‘s not working! BUT WHY?!
I‘m glad that I don‘t have that struggle that often anymore. I still do, but I sometimes think I know what the problem is. I‘m wrong most of the time, but that‘s how learning works I guess. Also: Another reason for choosing Unity! The community is huge and it‘s very likely that someone has had a problem you are having right now before. There are thousands of entries in the forums and up until now I always found something that could help me out. Back to Flufftopia. I really like to run off the track. We managed to finish it somehow. The last weeks before release were pretty tough though. We needed to delay the release and cut many things we initially wanted to have in the game. A save system for example. And a second game mode. And much more. I simply wasn‘t capable of these things at the time. Especially in the short amount of time we had left. Lesson learned: Try not to bite off more than you can chew. You most likely will anyways, but at least try not to. But nevertheless the feedback we got for the game was unexpectedly positive – with over 3000 downloads it was our most successful game up until now. We also definitely want to make a large update somewhen in the future to hand in all the stuff we wanted to be in the game later. If you want to know even more details about the development and release, I recommend you to read this article Daniel wrote some time ago. Is the stuff I‘m telling you even interesting? I don‘t know. But that‘s it for Flufftopia. There‘s one more thing I‘d like to talk about in this post. When people ask what our specific tasks are we often answer with something like „Angela does art and programming and Daniel does the rest.“ And that often seems to confuse people. They assume that it’s me who‘s doing all the work. And that‘s absolutely not the case. First of all – Daniel is the idea guy. I wouldn‘t consider myself a creative person when it comes to coming up with game ideas, concepts and stories. I like being creative in graphical art for example but I need a base to work with. Also sound is something that shouldn‘t be underestimated. Many people don‘t realize how much of the atmosphere rises and falls with sound. And even though I kind of make music from time to time (up until now I made the title track for Flufftopia and that‘s it X‘D) it‘s mostly Daniel who‘s taking care of these things. Also he‘s the one coordinating everything. And when I say everything I mean everything. I‘m a total disaster when it comes to anything related to organization. So yeah, that‘s something he‘s taking care of too. All day. Every day. Thank you, Daniel. He also started to learn 3D modeling because that‘s of course something you need when making 3D games. And he‘s doing pretty well. And I‘m pretty thankful for that because I wanted to learn using Blender once and I rage quitted because it‘s… well, let‘s just say it‘s a very special program and I can be a very impatient person sometimes. So Daniel started making sinks and toilets for some reason. But hey, I think they look pretty cool!
And then there‘s also marketing and PR of course. And all the other stuff I don‘t want to take care of. And he makes amazing coffee!

Artist Statement: Project 3 – One Minute Supercut
Dr. Frank N Furter in 1 Minute https://seemooreart.tumblr.com/post/681392166088638464/art-project-3-one-minute-supercut-dr-frank-n
While working on this project, I wanted to revisit footage I gathered while working on the Rocky Horror Picture Show Gifs project. As I mentioned previously, I am enamored by Dr. Frank N Furter’s character and development arch over the course of the movie. When he is introduced, he is so confident, like nothing can bother him. He is playing a character within a character. But as things change throughout the movie we can see glimpses of his humanity, his joy, his anger, his sadness, and ending with a mental breakdown.
In this supercut, I started with the first moment Dr. Frank N Furter’s face came on the screen (not counting when the actor played the Priest in the first scene) and ended with right before the moment he was hit with the alien blaster. Before being hit, he traveled a roller-coaster of emotions, ending in bliss. Tim Curry, the actor that played Dr. Frank N Furter amazed me with his momentary quips of humor, like when he would stick out his tongue at other characters or roll his eyes as soon as he turned away. He gave Dr. Frank N Furter so many layers and I wanted to highlight just a few of the moments that really stuck out to me. The sound also slowly becomes unmatched, and that represents the Dr slowly becoming unhinged.

Artist Statement
Art Project 3: One Minute Supercut
I had a really hard time with this project. Okay, not the project but the idea, the meaning. I have so many things that I am passionate about but getting other people’s work and making my own statement was too much. It was too much for me only because I was thinking about it too long. I sabotaged myself thinking nothing I could make would be a good enough representation of that message. I had to break free of my own mental barriers and just do the project. I told myself just take the leap and do the project. In that moment I figured it out, I would take the leap and show taking the leap. I have only done indoor skydiving but so many of my friend have gone base jumping. I figured what better way of showing taking the leap than literally jumping off a cliff. Everyone I know who it has ever done says, there is nothing like it. They have said the leap is such a rush and it is over before you know it, but the worst part is if you think about it too much before you jump. For me, I guess I hesitated before I jumped, and it made it so much worse. After I finally “jumped”, the project was so fun, such a rush. Obviously not the same rush as jumping off a cliff, but it was a blast making this video. I used a wide mix of scenery to set the stage. I chose a song that was juxtaposed to the rush but also oddly satisfying in the timing to the cuts and action in the clips. Standing after I finished this project, it went by so quickly. Now I wonder what I was so worried about before I took the leap.

Beginnings to End | April 1, 2021 | Video
Artists Statement; Art Project 3; One minute supercut
When comparing human events/history to 'styles through the decades,' it is interesting how similar these concepts can be. Some repeat themselves, some never come back, some get mashed together into creating the new styles. Some are controversy and some push the limits –– and on a different note, when there was once a million humans and is now close to a trillion with no signs of letting up. It is very astonishing and equally scary. I was hoping to grab the multitude and chaoticness of human growth and where we are heading. And when given the fact that Earth has seen five mass extinctions - one never knows when the End(s) will be and Beginnings with start.
