Doctor Who is celebrating 60 years by releasing over 800 episodes on BBC iPlayer.

The sci-fi fantasy show first premiered in 1963 and has cemented itself as a permanent fixture in pop culture history. This fall, fans will be able to stream the entire 800-plus episode series along with spin-offs like Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood, and Class, and the behind-the-scenes series Doctor Who Confidential.

Each Dr Who episode will be made accessible for all Whovians, with subtitles, audio description, and sign language options available for the very first time.

Please forgive how horrifically this was recorded (the screen reader mutes itself in recordings, which made it entirely useless for this post, which required a second camera) but I wanted to show people what alt text Actually Does for screen readers because I think a lot more people would take the time to add it if they knew why.

This is how the default screen reader function built into my phone "reads" an image, one without alt text and one with.

(I can't add alt text description to videos, it seems, which feels a little ironic given the post.)

When the first image, without alt text, is selected by a screen reader, it just reads out "photo".

When the second image, with alt text, is selected, it reads out the alt text - in this case, "A blurry picture of a gray tabby cat sitting on a white carpeted floor.".

Being able to use alt text is far easier on screen readers because the image is a larger object to select - descriptions in plain text below an image are still helpful, but require enough vision to accurately select, and enough vision to know they're an image description to begin with.

So please, when possible, add alt text to photos, art, and screenshots you're uploading! A lot of phones can copy text from images now, which is how I add image IDs to other people's text heavy posts - there's really no reason to post a bunch of text heavy screencaps and not at least copy and paste the text into the alt text, and it makes a huge difference for accessibility.

i believe that every doctor should meet river song in the same way that every doctor should meet the daleks, the master, the cybermen, etc. like. river is literally their wife and is as good a litmus test as any nemesis to re-cut a new Doctor's teeth except this is about LOVE as a core muscle memory instead of just hate, disgust, and uh yk whatever core emotion to the Doctor's being that they have going on with the Master

Please learn the difference between breaking down a protective barrier someone is keeping in an effort to not be hurt (especially early in a relationship) and an actual boundary.

dan very clearly said "anemone" instead of "enemy" in this vid and i hope that gets included in the subtitles for those who can't hear the distinction. i want the deaf, hard of hearing, and auditory processing disordered phannies to know he said, "are we gonna get our first mortal anemone?"

idk most things about subtitle etiquette, i just use them, i don't make them. but i really wish i could read what dan *actually* said, not what he *meant* to say in more dapg videos

(as somebody who has worked in podcasting: if you can in your region, you should listen to the smith sisters episode on a platform they posted it on! if you’ve already listened to a fan-download and have access to the show in your area, you should play the episode in a muted tab or something to give them the numbers, especially if you enjoyed it!)
