So here's a theory dump about Mogadorian Augmentation:

I half remember what was mentioned in the books and what I made up, but essentially, it's the corrupt version of Loric energy. So I think the parallels between them are interesting to consider.

There's first the idea of development. Legacies develop naturally within a range of ages, meaning it takes time, not just the energy to get them. Meanwhile, the effects of augment that we saw were semi-instant (like Setrakus' healing after a stab to the heart) because it's almost completely artificial.

There's also the fact that while augment can drain Loric energy from one person to another, we've never seen it used to absolutely cancel a Legacy like Loric energy can, by heal away the augment. Legacy (the literal embodiment of Loric energy) is a conscious entity of it's own, but Augment isn't, it's more of a substance.

One of my biggest speculations is how they directly reflect the differences between the two species, and I'm taking Ella's example. When she was injected with augment, it made her pale and toned out her Legacies. So I was imagining that her colors dimmed overall too. Like, her eyes and hair were a darker color. Vice versa, this was reversed when she fell into Loric energy. Her hair was lighter red than before and her skin got darker and she had a sort of glow in her eyes.

It goes beyond the appearance outside, case in point Adam and Five. Adam has had some augment in his body for years without knowing at all. True it was very little, but if what Five (in reborn) implied about it hurting a lot was true, he definitely would've suspected it. But then Marina healing it is what caused pain. Exposure to Loric energy, which kills the augment.

So basically, to each species, the other power causes pain and their own 'fixes' it.

This also brings me to my point when Five said the augment is 'eating him alive'. My theory is that Augment works (at least to non-mogs) by replacing body parts little by little, especially in damaged areas. So when he first got it, the augment got into his body through his eye and the places where Setrakus cut his face, which usually helps me paint an image of the pattern of the spots.

This idea explains a few scenes in reborn (like when he got shot in the prison and stuff). I also think the augment spreads when he uses his Externa with it because he's basically moving it everywhere on his body. Its contrast to Loric energy that I mentioned before is also probably why Externa doesn't affect those parts of him.

Last thing is, what makes the Augment really symbolic is that it's not simply the opposite of Loric energy, it is corrupt Loric energy. Made by none other than a corrupt Loric, to the point that it (he) associates more with an entirely different group, both in appearance and effect.

Contemplating: Glasses and Augmenting Yourself

Do my glasses make me augmented? A weird thought at first, but not unrealistic or uncommon considering how many people wear glasses, contacts and go through corrective surgery to change their vision from what it sometimes naturally progresses to, though there are times such damage is inflicted but more commonly sight just deteriorates in a natural way.

This thought, as complicated as its getting, boils down to the Ship of Theseus argument, in which one questions whether or not a boat is the same boat after each part of it has been changed out either by repair or replacement. Am I still the same person now that I need glasses? Am I the same person after the fifteen years have passed for my skeleton to have regenerated and replaced all of its cells with new ones? Are copied and repeated electrical impulses burned over new brain cells enough to reinforce who I am or is that replacement of matter enough to change something in such a way where I will never be the same again?

If there is a line between the slight mental influence of a medical prosthesis, however small, and the complex mechanisms of damage over time to the mind in so much how they change who you are, where is that line? Is that line moved by public opinion and how a person is affected by it? Does outside influence matter at all or is it all internal up until where the line starts? Would I always change in some way before people get involved, or do you need others to cement those changes because they help to perceive you as yourself?

I could posit these questions forever but mostly I am using them as a means to question myself, probe and define myself up until such a point as I feel right about who I am versus the questions. I believe that the self is defined by all of these kinds of meditations, and they always start with the most recent change being where your questions lie. My new glasses blunt the stigmatism I have, make my vision less blurry and by virtue of both alleviates the headaches those problems brought with them. This has improved my mood and ability to read and focus on certain tasks, so in that small way a change has occured, but does that change who I am?

Small changes, much like the Ship of Theseus, stack up over time, but unlike the ship we have no absolute blueprint to ensure materials and shape stay the same, so those changes can never be as perfect as an ideal engineering of such a vessel could be if maintained in a vacuum. The Ship of Theseus could hypothetically be the same ship given ideal conditions but short of divine intervention there is no going back to or maintaining who we are indefinitely. I am different now that I need my glasses, however small that change is, and all I can do is meditate on that change and accept it as I wait for the next one.
