Thinking about insecure Javert and possessive Valjean...
Javert who aged like fine wine from like below average/slightly unattractive when he was younger to FINEEEE old man as he got older MHMMMM but didn't realize it but like women started to increasingly come and flirt with him but him being oblivious and inexperienced just turned them down one way or another.
Valjean has always found him cute and attractive tho 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙂↕️.
And then cue possessive and jealous Madeleine every single time someone tries to flirt with the inspector. It was still kinda mild and little in MSM because although the tendencies were showing it wasn't yet realised by many people. but post-Seine it's like he finally realised how many people actually do find his inspector attractive and then cue jealousy. (Even before when they were together HAHAHHAHA)
Valjean on the other hand has always been fine shyt and will always be fine shyt. Aka Javert has to deal with insecurities ever since from MsM about his feelings for Monsieur Le Maire and post-Seine his feelings for Valjean.
So it's like a lot of emotional baggage and guilt (Valjean's side because of the jealousy and Javert's side because he thinks he's tainting this fine shyt by liking him even tho he is fine shyt no matter what). Which is lowk so delicious HNGHHH
Them feeling the sides they don't usually feel around other people AND EXPERIENCING IT even tho they don't want to
#als' daily shenanigans#valvert#les mis#these two are eating my brain#colonising my brain fr#AHHHHH#i love them so much#i think them indulging like the side they usually dont indulge around each other#and my brain go boom

So you said Oshi no Ko is inspired by Monster. How do you think the endings compare?
.
Hi!
Thank you for this ask, I wrote about the comparison between the two series here. As far as the twon endings go, well, I think Monster's is masterful, whereas Oshi No Ko's is mediocre at best. It is not a narrative disaster exactly, but it is not good and since the rest of the story is very well written... well, the drop in quality is felt.
So, let's go with the comparison. First of all, for whoever does not know about Monster (and should) here is a synopsis and a quick foiling between the series and OnK.
NAOKI URASAWA'S MONSTER
Monster is one of Naoki Urasawa's work and a masterpiece to be honest. Here is its premise (spoilers! also read this story, if you have not and disliked Oshi No Ko ending... or in general just read it... it is wonderful).
Kenzo Tenma is a Japanese surgeon working in Germany during the Cold War. He is a prodigy, so his superiors usually assign him the cases of rich and important people. One night he finds himself in front of a choice. A child, Johan, arrives at the hospital with a bullet in the head and some minutes later he is ordered to operate on an influent politician. However, Tenma chooses to make the ethical choice and saves the child. This costs him his career, but he still feels he did the right thing. Some time later both Johan and his traumatized twin sister Nina disappear, just when Tenma's superiors all mysteriously die. As a result, Tenma becomes the head of the clinic and manages the hospital in a way it helps as many people as possible. Still, ten years later Johan comes back into his life and it is revealed that not only he is the one who killed Tenma's superiors, but also that he is a serial killer. Tenma and Nina go through parallel journeys to try to both stop Johan and discover more of the twins' mysterious past. Meanwhile, Tenma's ex Eva and Inspector Lunge look for Tenma for different reasons. Eva wants to both go back together with Tenma and get revenge on him. Lunge believes Tenma is the culprit behind Johan's mysterious streak of murders.
As you can see, there are some similarities with Oshi No Ko:
Monster is the story of a surgeon, who must track down a serial killer whose life he has saved. This monster is one of 2 twins and the story deals with the brother and sister uncovering their past
Oshi No Ko is the story of a doctor, who is murdered and reborn as his favourite idol's child. Together with him there is a twin sister and they must uncover their mothers' past and killer.
In short, in both series there is a pair of twins and a murderer. It is just that in Monster the twins have no memories nor sense of selves, while in Oshi No Ko they have too many memories and baggage.
In both stories, there is a villain (Johan and Kamiki), who is both victim and perpetrator and difficult to understand. This villain is a satanic archetype, who is excellent at manipulating people. He is a serial killer, who reiterates the traumas of his past over and over, out of a sense of emptiness.
Finally, in Monster the characters must uncover the truth behind Johan, while in Oshi No Ko they must find out who Ai really is. The former is about understanding a monster, whereas the latter is about empathizing with a goddess.
Now that we have the basic foiling down, let's try and explore the two endings. Monster's fully explores the theme it set up to explore. Oshi No Ko's instead doesn't. Let's see why.
JOHAN VS AI
Both Monster and Oshi No Ko have a main protagonist (Tenma and Aqua), who is trying to solve a mystery centered on another person (Johan, Ai). As a result, both Johan and Ai find themselves at the centre of the story. Readers keep on reading because they wanna uncover the mystery behind these two characters. Who is really Johan and why did he become a monster? Who is really Ai and what was she lying about?
However, the two series' payoffs are very different.
On the one hand Johan stays the heart of the story from beginning to end. His past is slowly revealed and there are several twists, which add depth to his character, while keeping the mystery strong. Finally, the very last chapter is called "The True Monster" and it offers a final interpretative key to understand Johan. Basically, up until the very end, Johan remains the key character and up until the very end there are things left to discover about him. His story is intertwined and foiled with that of everyone else's. From Tenma to Nina, to Eva to Lunge to Grimmer... everyone is a foil to Johan.
On the other hand Ai stays at the heart of the story up until the arc, which should be about her. The movie arc is where Ai progressively disappears from the narrative. Her role is slowly overtaken by Hikaru and later on Hikaru too disappears, so that Aqua can have his sad pretty boy moment :P. The story sets up a mystery about Ai, but it solves it at the very beginning with the climax of her arc. The story promises more about her, like an exploration of her idea that loving someone is to lie to them. However, when the time comes to explore this mentality, its toxicity and its contradictions are glossed over. Everything is overly simplified, so that there can be cheap twists.
The big reveal about Ai is that she truly loved Hikaru, even if she herself did not fully understand it... However, this was something clear even before it was told. Now this is not bad per se, but for this reveal to have any impact, it should have been built up differently. Ai's love for Hikaru, either good or wrong, should have been explored more and problemitized. For example, it is obvious Ai loves Hikaru when they meet... but would she love him even if she knew he would have turned out a killer? Would she have forgiven him, even if Hikaru had tried to hurt Ruby? Did Ai know it was Hikaru killing her? Or did she not know? A lot could have been done, for example, with the white rose... She could have understood it was Hikaru, if this flower had any particular meaning in their relationship... Actually I was waiting for the flowers to become meaningful, but then they did not. Rather it seems Hikaru started using them as his signature flower after Ai's death.
Not only that, but Ai's own children do not even have to struggle to empathize with her and discover how she felt, Ai herself told them directly. Overall this revelation, which is built up from the beginning ("Will Ai forgive Hikaru or not?") literally means nothing. Aqua isn't conflicted about it, Ruby delivering the line, where she forgives Hikaru in the movie is not even shown. Finally, Ai's feelings do not change Hikaru, nor have any real impact on him. Neither for good nor for worse.
Let's highlight that Monster does have a similar moment, where a character empathizing with another is framed as too little too late:
Here, Nina finally forgives Johan for his crimes. She does so as she is finally able to remember their shared past, to accept it and to accept herself. Her act is first of all an act of self-forgiveness and shows her growth from a traumatized girl focused on revenge into a forgiving and empathetic person, able to embrace the good in the world. It is the climax of her personal arc. However, her forgiveness does not change Johan nor stops him. Johan says it is too late and is ready to either kill or be killed. His line about how "some things can never be amended" refers to both his own crime and Nina's previous refusal of him. He refuses to forgive both himself and Nina. And yet, Nina's choice still matters. In fact, even after Johan refuses her forgiveness she sticks to it and when she gets the chance to let Johan die, she doesn't and insists he must be saved.
Ai's love and forgiveness of Hikaru is instead glossed over, as it is her final wish. Again, this would be fine if it was given any depth. It could have been framed as Aqua and Ruby having to dismiss Ai's final wish as a way to truly live their lives. Not held back by Ai's memory, as painful as it was. A way to let Ai go. Instead nothing of it happens. Ai is in the end nothing more and nothing else than the character so brilliantly summarized by the song "idol". Nothing of which we discover about her comes close to the power of her introduction and death. It is a pity because her relationship with Hikaru, her confused feelings of love and her choice to forgive him (or not) could have been great.
NINA AND JOHAN VS AI AND HIKARU
Nina and Johan are like Ai and Hikaru, as they are an exploration of how different people react to trauma.
Nina represses her bad memories, whereas Johan clings to them. That is the difference between them:
Nina refuses her trauma. She builds an identity that negates everything her trauma represents. She forgets about it all and when she tries to retrieve her lost memories through hypnosis, she tries to strangle her therapist.
Johan embraces both his and Nina's trauma. He builds a self identity that is everything their trauma represents. He is so scared of being nobody that he mistakenly confuses what Nina shares about a traumatic event with his own memories.
So, you see... Nina is a protagonist and Johan is a villain, but the point of their foiling isn't that she is good and that he is bad. Actually, the point is that Nina can be good because she has been relying completely on Johan to protect her. She has been burying her own memories, so that she could depend on Johan's violence to survive. Of course this is not done on purpose and it is a tragic consequence of the twins' tragic childhood. Still, what seems as a very straightforward case of good twin and evil twin turns out to be far more layered and complex.
The same isn't true for Ai and Hikaru. Ai and Hikaru's foiling stems from the fact they are both objectified by others. They are idols, objects of adoration and they resent this situation. They suffer and are unable to forge a real relationship with another person. They literally do not know how because they are both objectified by others, so they objectify others in return. Ai wants to love Hikaru, but is not sure of how to do it. Hikaru ends up idolizing Ai, like others do. This is an interesting premise, which would have been perfect to explore the main theme of objectification and love... except the series doesn't.
The solution of Ai and Hikaru's foiling isn't that you should not idolize others... even if the idea seems to be suggested multiple times throughout the story:
The solution is that there is a positive idolization:
And a negative one:
So, Ai is a good idol because she accepts the love others give her, loves them back and brings them joy.
Hikaru instead is a bad idol because he uses his influence on others to hurt them.
Now, I do not hate this foiling tbh. I think again that with the proper exploration it could have been fascinating. I also think the series never meant to negate the fact entertainment and idols can bring joy, fun and inspire others. Still, you can't introduce a third dimension to your theme (people should not be objectified) and then go back to a white and black vision. It creates a dissonance, if done poorly. And I think here it is so.
NINA AND JOHAN VS RUBY AND AQUA
As explained above, Nina and Johan are a twist on the evil twin and good twin. In particular, Johan willingly acts as Nina’s shadow.
The shadow is everything the person represses and does not want to see about herself. It is a concept that truly fits Nina’s character After all, when we meet her:

She is running away from the darkness and violence of her past.
Nina is determined not to really face her shadow. This is why she represses her memories, tries to kill Johan when she discovers what he has done:

And tries to kill him again after she remembers him as an adult. However, you can't kill your shadow. You can only accept it. Nina does not and symbolically her attempted murder of Johan leads Johan to grow more and more desperate until he spirals completely.
Ruby and Aqua play with light and darkness, as well. In a sense, Aqua does try to act as Ruby's shadow as he is the one who is ready to face darkness and die, so that Ruby can keep on shining brilliantly and live.
By the end Aqua dies for Ruby's life, but in his last moments he wishes to live:
I would not be surprised if Ruby kept on living, despite the darkness she feels inside:
That said, both Ruby and Aqua have a dimension, which is never fully explored:
Aqua and Ruby have moments where they lose the star in their eyes and get the chance to simply be people. However, this dimension is never fully addressed (especially for Ruby) and quickly disappears. Once again the dimension, where idolization can be refused is only brought up briefly and never truly explored.
Finally, both Johan and Nina and Ruby and Aqua have an unhealthy obsession with each other, with some incestuous subtext. Still, this obsession is treated very differently.
Johan sends his sister flowers and tells her "he was born to smother her with flowers". He is also obsessed with her and at one point he crossdress as her (also to confuse the people who are following him). Still, this obsession is presented for what it is: wrong. Not only that, but despite the creepy flower lines, Johan and Nina's relationship is never presented as sexual. Johan is obsessed with Nina and organizes his whole identity around hers... Still, there is no kiss, nor love confession nor attempted rape. The subtext is used in the beginning to convey Johan's obsession and disappears as the story progresses and we get to better understand why Johan is obsessed with Nina.
Aqua and Ruby's incestuous subtext is instead never solved. Personally, I was not so outraged by Ruby having feelings for Sensei, cause I thought it was something she had to overcome in order to grow up tbh. I saw it as a freudian motif, an obsession Ruby would have overcome as she finally leaves Sarina behind and embraces her new life. However, this does not happen. Ruby straight out tells Aqua she loves him and this is never addressed again. Aqua has an inner monologue about how he loves Kana and the person Ruby loves was his past self... But this is not the point. The point of such a plotline, if you wanna insert it, should be that Ruby has to get over Sensei, realizing she never truly fell in love with him... but rather that hers was a simply infatuation. A precocious crush and nothing more. Instead this never happens and ends up being completely irrelevant and taking away time that could have been used for more relevant plotlines.
JOHAN VS HIKARU
Finally, let's talk about Johan and Hikaru. Both characters want to do the same thing: they wanna deconstruct the Freudian Excuse trope:
The writers have a villain, and they want to give that character some depth. The obvious solution is to Pet the Dog. Unfortunately, that tends to make the character less scary, causing Badass Decay and Villain Decay. Instead, writers may keep the villain (especially The Sociopath) just as vile as before, but reveal that they have a reason for being that way. The most popular one is the Freudian Excuse: the villain had an abusive and particularly violent backstory (such as Abusive Parents, being bullied by peers, being raped in the past, etc.), making them insane and warping their perception on the universe, and that's why they're sociopathic Serial Killers going on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge, or why they want to destroy everything out of their misery, or why they're Straw Nihilists who adhere to The Social Darwinist philosophy that it's a Crapsack World where Might Makes Right.
Both are young men, who went through horrible traumas and were turned into monsters. Still, Johan deconstructs this trope successfully imo. Hikaru instead doesn't.
Johan's story keeps on presenting and subverting or deconstructing popular tropes associated to villains:
At one point he says there is a "monster inside of him". Nina takes it at face value and thinks Johan has a double personality. However, this is proven false. It is a simplistic black and white solution to Johan's mystery, which is quickly discarded.
Secondly, Tenma discovers Johan as a child was taken into an abusive environment, where experiments were taken on children, to the point they would lose their humanity and memories. Obviously he believes this is what warped Johan. Except this is not the case... Johan was already a killer when he joined this abusive environment. It obviously had an effect on his psyche, but it is not what "created him".
Thirdly, it is revealed one of the twins witnessed a horrible and violent massacre. Everyone, including Johan himself, believes it was him who saw all this, becoming traumatized. Except it is finally revealed Nina is the one who saw the massacre play out, then she told Johan and eventually repressed this horrible memory. Johan instead made this memory his and tricked himself into believing he had really witnessed the whole thing.
So, Johan's story is one which masterfully deconstructs popular tropes. He was not changed because of one bad day. His self is the resulf of all his life: it stems from his weak lack of self, his and Nina's trauma, his fear of being betrayed by adults and his wish to protect Nina. Everything we discover helps us understand him, sure. However, it does not excuse him because Nina too underwent the same experiences and did not become a murderer (even if she could have).
Every twist does not detract from what we previously knew, but adds to it and it creates a character, who is both a monster and human.
Hikaru is instead reduced to a very cheap "cool motif, still murder". He is introduced as horrible since he is shown killing an actress. Then, he is humanized throughout the movie arc and he is given complexity. Some revelations are potentially interesting... Like the fact he did not willingly kill his rapist (I thought he did) and the idea he did not even mean to kill Ai. However, everything is then sacrificed to turn him into a big bad and a monster. Now, tbh I actually LOVED the twist Hikaru was the final villain. I had found the happy ending very cheap and I thought that this twist was there, so that we could have had a more gray conclusion, with some deep dive into Hikaru's head. An exploration that showed how he was a villain and maybe lost, but also that explained to us his reasoning and showed him as very human.
I would have loved if his confrontation with Aqua and a later confrontation with Ruby could finally wake him up and let him see his children as people, instead than tools to just reiterate his obsession for Ai. Like, I even think Aqua set up the perfect chance for redemption for Hikaru. As in the end, he could have taken the fall for the ONLY crime he did not committed, that is Aqua's attempted murder. So, that he would go to prison leaving Aqua and Ruby to live as they wanted. instead, we have a character, which was presented as complex reduced to a caricature of himself. By the way, if you wanted to show Hikaru was too gone... I think you could have done it... but you can't add complexity to a character and then take it away. If you do so, then you are bound to make people angry.
Again, Monster does successfully present Johan as a monster. He does a lot of horrible things and by the end you, as a reader, do not really have to forgive him. The story even lets enough space for you to wonder if the characters did the right choice into saving him. Moreover, Johan's past does not justify his actions in any way. Still, whatever you might think about Johan morally, you arrive at the end of Monster with the acknowledgement that Johan is a person. Not only that, but the point is that he is a monster PRECISELY because he is a person. It is his humanity, which turns him into a monster. Just like his humanity might help him become a person once again.
SECONDARY CHARACTERS
Without going too deep into this, but Monster has two other main supporting characters, other than the 3 main protagonists (Nina, Tenma and Johan). They are Lunge and Eva. Both of their arcs complement the themes, both are gorgeous, tie into the story and are completed. They advance the plot and subplots, but they are not sacrificed to it. In particular, Eva is a great example of how to take an overused misogynistic trope (the crazy ex-girlfriend) and how to make a wonderful character out of it. Eva is initially a horrible person, she is selfish, a woman-child, obsessive. She is also hurt, lonely and suicidal. As the story goes on she blooms into her self. She spends the majority of her story wanting to get back together with Tenma. And Tenma save her multiple times. However, by the end it is not through Tenma that she changes. She develops thanks to the meeting with another character. And in the end she ends up alone. Her arc is that she needs to stop depending on others and must forge her own life.
In comparison, Kana and Akane start the story as two wonderful characters. They have their own arcs, they tie into the plot and into Aqua's arc. However, they also feel, as if they have their own subplots, as well. Except that by the end, the ball is dropped and both are reduced to pieces of Aqua's harem. Their individual arcs do not matter to the story anymore. The relationship they have with each other, which is set up as extremely important, is left unexplored. Their contribution to the story is that they are both in love with Aqua, but their loves for him are not challenged. Kana is in love with Aqua's mask and never gets to discover the real him. Even if she is set up as his love interest since their first meeting. Akane's love for Aqua is set up as an obsession and a lie, something she needs to overcome, so that she can have a real relationship with him. One rooted in respect and friendship. Still, she is left crying, idolizing Aqua and regretting that they could not have killed Hikaru together. All of this is kind of distasteful imo.
THE ENDING
In general, Oshi No Ko's fake happy ending is Monster's ending, but cheap.
The character set up as the monster (Hikaru/Johan) is given complexity
The main girl (Ruby/Nina) forgives him and symbolically saves him
The main protagonist (Aqua/Tenma) eventually lets go of revenge and in this way he saves himself
The character at the core of the series (Ai/Johan) is finally understood and their mystery is solved in a way that frees the characters
Still, Monster does this in a way, which is real. Nina and Tenma has to struggle with forgiving Johan. Up until the end they are unsure of what their choice will be: murder or forgiveness. Aqua and Ruby's choice to forgive Hikaru is glossed over. It could have been such a cool opportunity especially for Ruby's arc. Where her forgiving Hikaru (her parent) as Ruby might have tied with her forgiving her parents as Sarina. It could have been a way for her to find closure.
However, the author preferred to use all Monster's trope in a cheap way to justify a dark twist and a tragic ending, which is not as powerful for the simple reason the story itself is not written as a tragedy.
It is funny really because often people think tragic ending are more powerful than positive one. More cathartic. And they can be. However, in this case, Monster's positive ending is way deeper and more cathartic than Oshi No Ko's superficial one, which is rooted in shock value.

Becoming very partial to a Minjung Lives AU. How or why Dongsik barges in on Kang Jinmook while he's busy chopping off her fingers we'll handwave for now, but the point is, she might have lost some knuckles on one hand and lands in a hospital with a bruised throat, but she lives.
The hunt for Yuyeon's actual killer mostly goes down as in canon, what interests me is what comes after:
After getting checked out she immediately moves in with Lee Dongsik. She has no desire to ever step foot in her father's house again, you could not pay her. Dongsik dug it up with her full permission and honestly, she wishes he used a Molotov cocktail instead of a sledgehammer.
Sometime in the months Han Joowon and Lee Dongsik spend dancing around each other following the arrest of Han Kihwan Minjung decides she wants her life back and goes to Seoul to party. It does not go well. There's a guy and he won't take no for an answer. In a panic she locks herself in the women's bathroom and shuffles through her options. Calling Dongsik is her first thought, but what can he do, all the way from Manyang? Oh but wait, doesn't his pretty patrol partner live in Seoul? Ten minutes later Kang Minjung is safely seated in Han Joowon's car, watching him Have a Few Words with the pushy asshole.
As Inspector Han starts to show up more and more often at the Lee family house, rumours start to spread in the neighbourhood - obviously he must be there for Kang Minjung! ...Minjung herself has no such illusions. What she has are some nice noise-cancelling headphones and a firm resolve to mind her business. Mostly. Unless she can rib Dongsik about his awkward courting of Han Joowon.
Inspector Han, as it turns out, comes with quite a lot of baggage. And some fancy whisky. Half a bottle into one of those Minjung tells him that if she isn't allowed to feel like a heap of shitty genetic junk because of her father's '''legacy''', then neither is Joowon.
Eventually she starts campaigning for the three of them to move into Chief Nam's lakeside house. Her reasoning is flawless, she's sure: she's not going anywhere near her father's house again, Dongsik's had a corpse in the basement and Joowon's apartment is a shoebox. At this point neither men told her anything official about their relationship. Of course they are together, but that's beside the point!
Han Joowon was gonna be the bigger person. He was NOT gonna say anything about Minjung using his lotion, he really wasn't but one day he finds a stray rhinestone in it and that finally crosses his threshold of tolerance. (Not that he can stay mad at her for long, but still. It's about principles!)

Do you have any more details regard Eulogy's mother? She's....quite charming
Okay I would LOVE TO TALK ABOUT HER AND I SHALL
So his Mother is a career sex worker, she's got ambitions to run her own brothel one day. Thankfully the brothel she works for now is very good about treating it's workers right. That means health check ups every week, medical leave, vacation time, on site housing, etc. etc. She's currently the highest earner there. Imagine how in ancient China, a courtsean of high rank and renown could pick and choose her clients at her discretion cause she was immense demand-she's like that.
She deals with a lot of baggage from being a Goblin, being a little race means you have to work twice as hard for any iota of respect that everyone else gets on a baseline. This also translates to how she treated Eulogy as a kid-which she viewed as the kindest thing she could do for him because he at least could be considered 'Gnome Passing' the less people who think he's a goblin, the farther he'd be able to get in life.
She's one of those people who had a kid and became frustrated when something that everyone said 'comes naturally' with being a new mother didn't come easy and felt a lot of the time that she was doing something wrong and she was fucking up and it made her equal parts angry and sad with herself. She only kept Eulogy until he was weaned enough to hand off to Mort (Eulogy's Dad)
Eulogy ironically started smoking because of her because she frequently smoked; the smell for him is almost comforting as well as the nicotine helps relax him. It reminds him of an easier time when he believed his mother loved him the way he thought she did.
Ironically, if she had accepted Mort's advances and consented to be his wife-he would not qualm with her continuing her work as a sex worker as it was something she liked doing and had ambition in and would support her. TFW the husband packs you a nice lunch and reminds you to hydrate while pleasing other men at your job. She would have been accepted into the Jones Clan and considering how they're all weirdos in their own way-they would treat her as one of their own. Her relationship with Eulogy would still be a bit aloof, but probably much better than currently and Eulogy would have a stronger understanding of his goblinoid heirtage.
Her favorite treats are blueberries, cheesecakes, and fancy lotions and perfumes.
She sometimes DOES eat her cigarettes if she can't find an ash tray.
Eulogy inheirted his freckle prone skin from her.
She's very well aware of her son's exploits as the High Inspector of Waterdeep and it annoys the heck out of her because everyone wants to bring it up when he's in the papers.

🕵🏻♀️ Summary: Louisa Darcy and Spiros Halikis are two detectives who clash from the moment they’re assigned to a high-profile murder case, their contrasting investigative styles only adding fuel to the fire. But as they dig deeper into the case—and each other—they begin to experience haunting flashes of a past life they can’t remember, but can’t ignore.
🕵🏻♀️ Preview below the cut.
The clamor of the London precinct buzzed around Louisa Darcy, but her mind was elsewhere. The crime reports on her desk blurred in her vision as a strange sense of familiarity washed over her. For days now, she had been grappling with these odd flashes—moments where it felt like she wasn’t alone, even when she was. She brushed the feeling aside, focusing instead on the notes scattered before her.
This case didn’t sit right. A string of burglaries in wealthy neighborhoods, sure, but something about the way the break-ins had been executed felt far too coordinated. She jotted down another observation in her notebook, ignoring the rain pelting against the window. As much as she liked to work alone, this one felt bigger than the run-of-the-mill cases. But that wasn’t her call to make.
A brisk knock on the door broke her concentration, and in walked Chief Inspector Reynolds. His no-nonsense demeanor was more than enough to pull Louisa back to the present.
“Darcy, we’ve got a case,” Reynolds said, tossing a folder onto her desk. “A string of high-society robberies that’s just become... more complicated. It might be connected to a possible homicide—still getting the details.”
Louisa raised an eyebrow, instantly alert. A murder? That changed everything. She leaned forward, but Reynolds held up a hand.
“There’s more,” he added, clearly not thrilled about the next part. “You’ll be working with someone else on this. Halikis.”
Louisa’s expression hardened. She’d heard the name before—Spiros Halikis—a detective with a reputation as a brash, methodical operator who didn’t care much for playing by the rules. His investigative style was the complete opposite of her own people-focused, empathetic approach. They were bound to clash.
“With all due respect, sir, I work better on my own.”
“I know you do,” Reynolds said, sitting down in the chair opposite her. “But this case is bigger than we initially thought. And you’ll need backup. Halikis has solved some of the toughest cases we’ve had this year. Between the two of you, I expect results.”
Louisa clenched her jaw but nodded, keeping her frustration in check. “Fine.”
Reynolds leaned back, clearly relieved she wasn’t fighting him on this one. “He’ll be here any minute. Get briefed, and I want updates by tomorrow. This one’s got eyes on it from higher up.”
As soon as Reynolds left, Louisa glanced down at the folder he’d dropped on her desk. She skimmed through the case details—the same string of burglaries she’d been looking into, but now, a wealthy financier had been found dead in his mansion. There were no signs of forced entry, no obvious suspects. And yet, something about it reeked of foul play. The robbery and the murder had to be connected.
Her door swung open again, and in walked Spiros Halikis, carrying an air of quiet authority. His dark hair, a little too long for regulation, was damp from the rain outside. His eyes, sharp and calculating, swept the room before settling on her.
“You must be Darcy,” he said, his deep voice tinged with a heavy Greek accent.

Thanks for the tag, @nopenototdaysatan!!
1.How many works on AO3? Eight! Soon to be nine ᵍᵒᵒᵈ ˡᵒʳᵈ ʰᵒʷ ᵈᶦᵈ ᵗʰᵃᵗ ʰᵃᵖᵖᵉⁿ
2. Total word Count on AO3: Currently 115,231 ᵃᵍᵃᶦⁿ ʷᵗᶠ
3. Top 3 pics by Kudos:
"The Princess and the Spirit" (227) — it's a short, sweet lil fic I put up like two days after Echoes of Wisdom released so xD
Shards of the Hero (103) — I'm glad this one is still up there! :D
Fallen Fae (92) — ʰᵒˡ ˢʰᶦᵗ my little wunderkind of a fic. I think I hit on a really interesting and original concept with this one (Hyrule as an anti-fairy). I hope more people use the idea >:3c
4. What Fandoms do you write for? Just Legend of Zelda (any game) and Linked Universe so far. Strangely I haven't really felt the need to write fanfic in FFXIV, outside of this one crossover (and other than the occasional WoL diary entry).
5. Do you respond to comments? Usually! I had a period where I wasn't but I try to respond to all of the initial comments now (and threads if I have more to say).
6. Fic with the angstiest ending: *squints* Probably "Hiraeth"? Although it's not suuuper angsty. It's more about homesickness. There's also "Greedy Rabbit", which ends on an open-ended note that implies future angst.
7. Fic with the happiest ending: Happiest? "The Princess and the Spirit" is downright fluffy so probably that one, but Shards of the Hero ends on a really satisfying note :3c (When I finally get to it, Unbroken should end on a similarly satisfying conclusion. I already know what the very last line will be and it's going to be so good.)
8. Do you get hate? You hate Res?? Jail for reader!! Jail for ten thousand years!!! (Not that I'm aware of)
9. Do you write Smut? Nah, but I'm a sex-repulsed ace like 98% of the time. I'll very rarely read some if there's also substantial plot, but not write.
10. Do you write crossovers? I am now! I'm writing a FFXIV/LU crossover now where the Chain gets roped into the Omega raids (kind of). I've got a WIP post for that coming tomorrow and I'm hoping to have the first chapter out soon.
11. Ever had a fic stolen? Nah but like, I'm pretty new on the scene? And there's much bigger fish.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Nah but that'd be interesting!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic? I haven't! I'm actually not sure how that works.
14. All Time Favorite Ship? I'm a sucker for Ravio/Link but also Four/Shadow and no I will not choose between them Dx Honorable mentions are Wild/Flora, and Sky/Sun/Groose.
15. WIPs you want to finish but doubt you will? *grabs you by the face* I will finish them.
Actually though I keep sitting down to write Her Sword and Shield (Skyward Sword novelization) and then a more fun idea comes along. So maybe that one. I'll get back to you someday.
16.Writing Strengths? I can do a hella twist ✨ Also really digging into a character's emotional baggage. I also do some interesting and creative worldbuilding, I think. "A Field Guide to Fairies" is a pretty good worldbuilding example.
17. Writing Weaknesses: I'm not really poetic? If I try to be abstract it comes off a bit confusing. Also I really struggle with getting words down without worrying about them being exactly right in the first draft, so I'm slow.
18. Thoughts on Mixed Language Dialogue: Eh? No strong opinions I guess.
19. First Fandom you wrote for? Silly answer is Inspector Gadget back in like '97 (I was baby). I know I was writing a Wind Waker novelization shortly after it came out ('03), but the oldest thing I can find still online is a Pokemon fic from '05 (no, I am not sharing my old ff.net handles lmao)
20. Favorite Fic you've ever written: When it's finished it might be Unbroken, but right now it's Shards of the Hero. SotH let me weave some Fierce Deity lore (and FD yoinks Link into a therapy session so that's fun).
I'm not sure who to tag (brain is still scrambly eggs after the write-a-thon) but if we're mutuals please go for it and tag me so I can read your answers! 😊

"Probably the outstanding surgeon was Dominique Jean Larrey (1766-1842), who was also an organizer, teacher, and inventor. He became surgeon-in-chief to the Imperial Guard, a baron, Commandant of the Legion of Honor, and Knight of the Order of the Iron Crown. Napoleon considered him the most virtuous man he had ever known. Practically his equal was Pierre François Percy, inspector general of military hospitals and surgeon-in-chief to the Army.
Both men hoped to make the Service de Santé an independent, self-sufficient organization with its own trains and full control over its hospitals. Sadly, some soldiers did not appreciate even their most devoted services. While Percy and his surgeons worked in the freezing cold at Eylau, stragglers stole their horses, swords, and baggage.

Train Episode (s2 again) Drabble Thing.
H/C and now that I know someone else likes this: dad!sebastian!!!
Ciel was sat down on a crate, exhausted from his experience on top of the train. He was already one to prone to motion sickness as it was and Sebastian was surprised he hadn’t gotten ill yet. “Master, are you sure you are alright?” He asked yet again kneeling in front of the child. “I know how prone you are to motion sickness..”
Ciel sighed and looked Sebastian right in the eyes, “I’m alright, amazingly, I’m surprised myself but then I also don’t exactly find the experience of vomiting a pleasure either so I suppose it is more of a relief than anything.”
“Agreed.” The demon nodded, he then busied himself with making sure the young earl was buttoned up enough, the weather wasn’t freezing persay but there was a nip in the air and it was enough to upset Ciel’s fragile body if they weren’t careful. “Please stay here, my lord. I will go stand in line and put your luggage onto the next train. Once on the train, I will make you a cup of tea if you like?”
“Yes, that would be nice, thank you.” Ciel responded, his eyes were heavily lidded showing just how exhausted he was. He closed his eyes momentarily wishing to relax a bit before he was back on the train when a familiar annoyance woke him up.
“Ciel!! Ciel!! Wake up! You wouldn’t want to fall asleep until after you are on the train!!”
He forced himself to wake up. Very close to his face was that damn inspector. “You.” He sighed. “What do you want?”
“To make sure you get back on the train safely!”
“How nice of you,” Ciel replied dryly sighing. “Shouldn’t you be keeping your eyes on your prisioner? He escaped last time and kidnapped me..”
“Have no fear!” The inspector exclaimed striking a dramatic pose. “It’s ALL Taken care of!!”
Ciel just sighed again. “Wonderful. Now leave me alone.”
“Where is that butler of yours? I will not leave until you have a guardian beside you.”
“He is over in line ..something about baggage …” Ciel shrugged obviously not interested. “I was told to wait here and so I am.”
“Exhausted from the fight I see?” The inspector asked. “I don’t blame you, I’m tired too but I do suppose with such a small body you are extremely exhausted.”
Ciel blushed bright red, “What do you care? I’m fine. I’m more annoyed by your presence than anything actually!”
Behind the inspector Sebastian appeared empty handed. “I beg your pardon, inspector but I believe I should take my master inside now. You see it is a bit chilly out here and I’m afraid the chill would upset his delicate body.”
Ciel glared at Sebastian. “Excuse me?!”
“Come young master, it is far too cold for you out here.” Sebastian knelt down and gathered the boy up in his arms. “There we are. It was nice to see you Mr. Inspector. We will be taking our leave now.”
Ciel sighed but wrapped his arms around Sebastian’s neck. “Was that really necessary?”
“Was what necessary?” The demon asked as he got in line to the first class seats.
“Babbling on about my health like that? It was embarrassing.” Ciel muttered blushing.
“It may not be what you wish to hear but you know I am telling the truth.” Ciel blinked then sighed embarrassed again. “Besides, young master, you were exposed to the elements for a long period of time thanks to that Assassin.” Sebastian reminded the child in his arms as he stepped up into the train minding his head and making sure not to move his master too much, lest he cause him to feel ill. “Not to mention you missed your regular afternoon nap because of all the commotion and with your past history of illness, my lord, you can not afford to miss a nap if it can be helped.”
Ciel grumbled but didn’t pull away only resting his head against Sebastian’s chest. Maybe his butler was right, after all Sebastian never lied to him ..that was an order that he followed. He was feeling sleepy..exhausted. “I-I guess a cup of warm tea would be nice. Now that my duty with the queen is finished I can relax on the way back.”
Sebastian quietly walked down the corridor and then pulled open the door that belonged to their private room. “Here we are!” He could only smile knowingly as he shut the door and then gently sat his master down on the bench seat with more care than usual. He had been “working” on his master for a month now and so far it had gone quite nicely. “There we are. Now then, before the train takes off would you like a cup of tea?”
“Yes, a cup of earl grey would be nice.” Ciel murmured resting his head against the window. He didn’t want to admit it out loud but he did feel cold and very tired. He felt like he’d over done it again, he knew his body was weak and “fragile” but he didn’t want to give in and couldn’t. But maybe he shouldn’t have done a lot of what he did today – not that he planned to do any of it. It had sounded like a very straight forward case with not much footwork involved which was why he had accepted it in the first place even though he was feeling tired. He sighed and looked over to Sebastian, he could feel the demon’s gaze on him. “What? Is there something wrong? I know what you are thinking …and you are wrong!”
Sebastian blinked confused, “Master, I was merely making sure you were alright before I made the tea. You have been acting very strange as of late and I’m worried. You doze off and become tired very easily, you can’t walk a long way without becoming winded and when you do sleep you are usually panicked by nightmares and drenched in a feverish sweat. I was against you accepting this case to begin with for those reasons but since you insisted on helping – I had no choice but to go along with it.”
“Of course I accepted the case,” The child argued sounding quite put out. “The Queen asked me personally to take on this case so I had to. I’m her masjesties guard dog its just part of my responsibilities and whether or not I am feeling well isn’t up for discussion when she asks me for my help. I’m alright, Sebastian, I’m just feeling worn out.”
Sebastian set the teacup back into its travel holder and stood moving to sit beside his master. He pulled off one glove and reached over placing his bare hand against Ciel’s forehead. The boy didn’t pull away, which was already a bad sign. The demon had come to learn that when Ciel did fall ill, his temperament changed drastically. He was more easily annoyed and less graceful at hiding how mad he was. He talked in circles and often forgot to finish conversations, not to mention the other physical ailements he’d listed off before.
“L-Let go Sebastian..” Ciel tried to pull away but in the end just stayed where he was. The glass felt cool against his skin. Even though he was feeling cold his skin was feeling hot to the touch. He had noticed that earlier when the assassin had dropped him to the roof of the train. But he figured he had been just sweating out of fear of what the man was going to do or what Sebastian was going to do to the man.
“Master,” The demon sighed removing his over coat and laying it across the small body. “You are ill. I can feel your fever. You must have caught it while being tossed about outside.”
“N-No…I think I had it before…” Ciel admitted hoarsely.

9 people you'd like to get to know better
tagged by @thatonecotton - thank you! this is so fun, takes me back to the days of prolific asks and tag memes!! i loved reading your answers 💕
Three ships:
vash/meryl (trigun): i watched this for the first time this year (@bbunbbi's excitement about it got me!), both the 98 anime and stampede! going in knowing a friend really likes two characters together is always influential, but there's something really special about these two - vash with his outward personality and inward baggage? meryl who thinks he's one thing and learns he's another and stays with him through thick and thin? good stuff!
kogami/akane (psycho pass): it's been EONS since i last watched this but i've been reminiscing with friends recently! iirc i watched the first two seasons of the anime and the first movie, and the highlight for me was always these two...akane the bright-eyed new inspector, kogami who used to be in her position but is now basically like, a dog on her leash? the way he's like, steady, willing, and calm to be just that? the way akane grows through real experience and is a bit hardened, but still stays herself...they go through a lot side-by-side and i think about them fondly!!
frederick/robin (fire emblem: awakening): lol okay piggy-backing on cotton's answer but!! i could name HEAPS of fire emblem ships i love, but these two have really been on my mind lately! frederick the wary will always have my heart lol but the way, re: robin, he goes from distrust to falling in love...but robin is actually (unknowingly) exactly what he was afraid of at the start?? there's romance there's humour there's tragedy....read cotton's work lol and you'll know what i'm talkin about!!!
First ever ship: hmmm i'm not sure if i remember! oh gosh actually i do recall liking amu/ikuto from shugo chara, which was the first anime i really like, properly watched all the way through when i was younger lol!! anne of green gables is something i grew up with too and anne and gilbert have always been the peak of romance for me!
Last song: the returner by allison russell! heard it on the radio the other day and i keep coming back to it!
Currently reading: i have a few things i'm currently reading - i start a lot of books that i get too busy to finish in the time i have them from the library, but i'm gonna get back to these ones eventually:
rooted by lyanda lynn haupt
a brief history of pakistan by james wynbrandt
women who run with the wolves by clarissa pinkola estés
i've also been chipping away at the novelizations for attack of the clones and revenge of the sith (a re-read!)
Currently watching: i don't really watch shows all that often...gosh...yeah i don't really know! the last thing might've been...like, just the scenes with anakin in them from the ahsoka series lol
Currently consuming: just water atm! i always forget to drink as much as i should!
Currently craving: samyang buldak noodles, always 😭 but lately i've been wanting to go eat some tteokbokki, it's been a while!
tagging @breserker, @ghosttbeef, @tofucasserole, @birdblacksocialclub, @rosemochi, @bbunbbi, @s4wdust, @darksign, @darrthvadr, @varethinsilico, @runicmagitek - (i know that's more than 9...let me live!) no pressure at all! and if anyone else sees this and wants to do it, say i tagged you!

"Bullion Hidden In Washer," Montreal Star. October 8, 1943. Page 21. --- VANCOUVER, Oct. 8 - (C. P.)-- How $10,000 worth of gold stolen from the Yukon Consolidated Gold Corporation was shipped from the Klondike to nearby Mission, B.C., concealed in the gears of a washing-machine, was disclosed yesterday by Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Donald William Duncan, who shipped the machine to his wife at Mission, was convicted Wednesday at Dawson, Y.T., of stealing the gold and sentenced to four years in penitentiary, police said.
His wife knew nothing of the case, they said, and the machine was still in the crate in which it had been shipped south.
Police said further arrests are expected at Dawson and at Whitehorse, Y.T. Inspector James Fripp. of the R.C.M.P., said information leading to the discovery of the cache of gold at Mission was given by Duncan following his arrest at Dawson.
Police found 300 ounces of gold in four sacks stuffed in the gears of the washing machine. Several pounds more gold, were found in Duncan's baggage when he was arrested, police said.

Quiet Interlude
AO3 Link.
Rating: G
Pairing: Susato Mikotoba/Haori Murasame (Rei Membami)
Part of my dgs roleswap au. Serves as a sort of prologue
Word count: 993
....::::**•°✾°•**::::....
Susato takes a deep breath when the metal door of her small cabin closes behind the sailor who just helped her carry all of her baggage. A derisive smile takes over her lips as she looks around the cramped and dark place — she saw Kazuma’s first-class cabin just before, much more spacious for only one person. Her brother did ask if they could share his cabin since they are used to sharing a bed anyhow but the sailors are surprisingly strict about this “one guest per cabin” rule.
But no matter, Susato needed her own space anyway. For reasons that even Kazuma cannot know, for now. When she turns around, she almost immediately stumbles on her trunk, taking pretty much almost all of the place on the floor. Carefully, she kneels down, trying to ignore how her fingers tremble as she reaches for the latches.
Then she opens it.
And nothing happens.
Instead, she is met with her dear friend Haori Murasame already sound asleep, curled up in the trunk. Susato lets out a quiet chuckle. Well, Haori always was a heavy sleeper. Gently, Susato lifts her up in her arms, before heading towards the bed and laying her there. She quickly inspects her face for any sign of trauma — these sailors were decidedly not gentle with the trunk, after all — but her palm only meets the smooth and pale skin of her best friend.
“Nice dreams, Haori,” she whispers, before giving in and placing a kiss on Haori’s forehead. Haori hums but doesn’t open her eyes, still blissfully asleep.
Susato pulls back before heading towards the small desk where she rested her notebook, open on a blank page. She has no heart to write just yet, but she doesn’t really want to go out and venture, her limbs are too weary to carry her farther than the hallway, surely. Her hands reach for the book anyway, finding the pocket hidden in its back cover and retrieving a small piece of paper from it. She reads the names again.
Susato Asogi. Tobias Gregson. Asa Shin. John H. Wilson.
Judge Jigoku almost wrote her down as “Mikotoba”, she remembers him telling her but he stopped himself in case the name would bring suspicion. The Professor’s case may be a confidential one, but if anyone involved in it heard her name, they would immediately suspect her, despite her appearance. So it was for the best that the British must assume she is Kazuma's biological sister, somehow. Inspector Gregson knew Genshin Asogi and Yujin Mikotoba, surely if he is such a revered inspector, he would see through the deceit? Well, ten years is a lot of time, maybe he’d just forget. Father did tell her and Kazuma that he lost contact with Inspector Gregson while he still wrote to Lord van Zieks, who they are supposed to meet at the train station once they arrive.
She heaves a sigh then simply makes her way back to the bed and lies down next to Haori. For a moment, she is content simply looking at her. For as small as the cabin is, it still has a small window through which the moon shines through, bathing the room in a gentle, ethereal light. That is how Susato can discern the tired lines on her friend’s face despite the peacefulness of her sleep.
She wonders, then, if she’s made the right choice. These last few days have been exhausting, to say the least. Her brother was almost hesitant to go on this study tour after almost losing Naruhodo-san and Susato has been trying to comfort Haori as much as she could without being dishonest in the wake of Dr Wilson’s death. With how distraught Haori was, did Susato take advantage of her mental state to convince her to agree to this dangerous plan? Was it selfish?
What would Father say? What would Kazuma say? Oh dear, she is not looking forward to telling him everything, he is such a supportive and kind brother but she knows he, too, has limits, and illegally bringing someone abroad without telling him might be pushing said limits. But she couldn’t implicate him in this. She is ready to risk her life and her honour, but not her brother’s or father’s. Hence, as soon as they touch the ground in Great Britain and she takes on her mission — whether she goes through with it or not —, she won’t use their clan name but her biological one. She will make sure people remember Yujin Mikotoba’s name.
“Mm… Susato?” a sleepy voice breaks through her darkening thoughts. Susato startles, blinking to readjust her vision. Immediately, her eyes find Haori’s grey ones, still cloudy with tiredness.
“Haori, are you alright?” Susato asks softly, hoping her voice doesn’t shake.
Haori smiles, all sweet and kind and it takes everything in Susato to not reach a hand forward to cradle her face.
“Of course, you’re here,” her friend answers. Susato swears she feels her insides melt.
She huffs out a chuckle. “I’m… I cannot express how grateful I am that you agreed to this crazy scheme of mine.”
Haori only looks at her for a while, clouded eyes appearing clearer by the second. At last, she scoots a little closer, close enough so their foreheads can touch. Susato almost forgets to breathe while Haori closes her eyes again.
“Do not be silly,” she says, softly, gently, “What are best friends for, if not to indulge in crazy plans?”
Susato smiles. “You’re right.”
“Of course, I am,” Haori tuts. “Sleep, dearest, you look far too troubled for someone who’s finally accomplishing her dream.”
“You’re right again,” Susato concedes and she finally closes her eyes. In the sudden darkness, all she can feel is Haori’s warmth and her gentle floral scent enveloping her. Blindly, she reaches a hand forward, finding Haori’s naturally. Her friend squeezes her hand, reassuring, loving. She sighs again.
And just for tonight, she’ll let her worries rest.
