hey! i read through your big post on medieval sexuality wrt hansry and i did notice that you did use the terms 'homosexuality' and 'heterosexuality' throughout when discussing medieval sexuality
I didn't see 'Heterosexuality as a Threat to Medieval Studies' by JA Schultz in your citations so thought I could get your thoughts on what Schultz said about reading 'heterosexuality' into the past

So for starters I will say that Schultz' article is wild.
He is swinging a bat at so many hornet nests in that thing. There was one footnote of his that was so downright rude to someone I know is a brilliant scholar of medieval queerness, and that instance was far from unique. I will also say that his ideas are... uh, somewhat limiting? To say the least. He acknowledges that we need modern ideas to talk about the past, but at the same time insists that when we use those modern ideas we are doing damage to our analysis of it. That we are, in fact, doing violence by insisting on firm meanings and definitions. There were several instances where he suggested that other scholars were entirely committed to things they were conjecturing on actually being facts. Very strange.
Regarding the atemporality of our modern idea of sexuality as a marker of identity, Schultz's ideas (though they are perhaps more extreme than most) are hardly unique, and I think you'll find that that is a common theme that you'll see cropping up in most of the books and articles that I listed that mention sexuality or gender identity in context. This goes back to the social constructionist vs. essentialist debate and is something that I talk about at some length in the literature review of my dissertation. I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but while I believe such an addition to be entirely necessary in any academic work that delves into this topic, I don't believe that it has nearly as much of a place in a tumblr post on the topic. I'll be honest with you, it kind of feels like that would be pointless and preachy. We've all seen the "Sappho and her friend" jokes that are made about historians and their tendency to underplay queerness, like an example I gave quite recently involved the frequent bedsharing of Richard the Lionheart and Philip II where a historian insisted that bedsharing was something poor people did at the time, and this meant that it was extremely normie behavior on the part of these two reigning monarchs.
While I understand and (to a certain extent) respect that tendency in academic articles and books that seek to sidestep this issue and thus remove themselves from the threat of criticism and debate entirely, within the context of social media I would find that approach to be somewhat naive. If I go around regularly making sure to remind everyone that oh, by the way, don't forget! We can't project these sexualities back onto peoples of the past the way we view them today! At best it's going to have a few people nodding and fall on deaf ears otherwise, and at worst it's going to affect my credibility in this particular space. There's a reason I very deliberately went out of my way not to include certain sources in my list of recommended further reading, because I notably wished to avoid that misattribution the best I could while remaining nevertheless realistic in my approach.
In short: no, we can't project modern sexualities back onto the people of the past the way we might wish to. But people on tumblr.com are not going to really care about that, and that's fine! When I personally am looking at people of the past and I label one or other of them as any one sexuality, I am stating that with the belief that that there were medieval people who, if transplanted into the modern day and taught to understand our sexual and gender identities, would see themselves reflected in us.

Petition to credit a co-author that was credited the first time his paper was published, but not credited as co-author the second time it was published
Please sign this petition for the editor to credit me for my work, by replying to this post or sending me a private message. This is a short overview of what happened to the best of my understanding:
I was given the task by a lecturer of UCLAN I had worked with in the past (I hired her for her first academic job) to turn a good student dissertation into a research paper. I am often given the task of turning research into a paper because my first language is English and I have a decent record at getting papers published.
It took many hours to turn it into a paper, I identified the most valuable parts and wrote several sections of the final paper. For example I strengthened the link to trust which is my specialist subject. The paper was published in a journal in 2018. The first author credited on the paper is the student, then the two supervisors from UCLAN and lastly me. I have an email from one of the co-authors from UCLAN expressing her gratitude for the publication and stating that based on the work I did, my name should not have been last on the list but further up.
In 2020 I came across the same paper published in a different journal, without my name as co-author. I contacted the editor and told him the paper is already published and not retracted when it was published a second time. Based on the ethics guidelines of the journal there were two options available to the editor as I understand it:
a) Based on the ethics guidelines of the journal, credit the author that was left out as he has the best evidence imaginable that he is a co-author, and the corresponding author belatedly acknowledged he should be credited. (I also have several emails, drafts etc. as evidence)
b) Based on the ethics guidelines of the journal, retract the paper the editor published in his journal because it was published before and not retracted.
He did not act on the evidence that the paper is already published, waited for the corresponding author to retract the original paper and then said he could not take into account the original version, despite it being published at the time it was published again, and only retracted when the co-author left out, used it as evidence. (the original paper has already been cited several times and is still widely available)
I contacted the corresponding author from UCLAN and he said in writing (I have the email) that he would ask the editor to add me and if the editor did not agree he would add me as co-author on another paper to make up for the mistake. Neither happened.
I have several emails, drafts and a published paper, that was not retracted when it was published a second time, that has been cited several times, proving irrefutably I am a co-author of that paper.
Neither the editor, the publisher or the co-authors have taken action to correct this. The action that has been taken so far is for some people to contact my work to try to make my life harder.

What is Plagiarism?
Plagiarism comes from the “Latin language” word "plagiarius,” which means kidnapping. In this way, plagiarism means taking the work of another person without his permission. Generally, plagiarism means copying the work of another person and pasting that work in their name without giving credit to the original author. It is a violation of copyright laws. Nowadays, legal articles, blogs, case analyses, and other writings are published by several journals to make people aware of our laws as well as global laws. It implies simply rewriting the ideas or views of another person in their own words. Duplicate plagiarism: In duplicate plagiarism, the person publishes the same work or writing on more than one platform. - Direct Plagiarism: In direct plagiarism, one copies the entire work from the article, blog, etc. of another person and mentions the work in their own name without giving credit to the original author of the work.

Now, many software programmes have come to detect plagiarism, which tells people about the similarity of their work with the work that is already published somewhere. This software not only tells the level of copied work. but also tells how much of the work has been copied from which platform. Level of plagiarism by UGC
UGC divides the plagiarism rate into four parts: Less than 10% plagiarism rate is excluded. Plagiarism between 10% and 40%: If the work of a student falls under this category, then no mark or credit will be given to the student, and further time will be allotted to him to complete the work; the time shall not exceed 6 months. Plagiarism between 40% and 60%: If the work of the student falls under this category, then no mark or credit shall be given to him, and the next year will be given to him for resubmission of the work, and the time shall not exceed 18 months. Plagiarism above 60%: If the work of the student falls under this category, then, no mark or credit will be given to him, and his name will be removed from the project.
Suggestion or curbing methods for Plagiarism
Punishment shall be given to the student for the copying of more than 30% work. Sessions shall be organized in the universities and colleges to reduce the level of plagiarism. If the work of the student is 20 to 30% plagiarized then, the student will be asked to revise the work and resubmit it within the allotted time. If the plagiarism is continuance. Then, strict action shall be taken by the authority against the student. Faculties shall provide the account of software to the students to detect the level of plagiarism. The undertaking shall be taken along with their work, writing, Research paper, thesis, and dissertation.
Conclusion
This article finds that plagiarism is a violation of copyright laws, and UGC also has plagiarism issues. Plagiarism is not exclusive to our country. It is also a crime on a worldwide scale. As a result, the faculty must take strong action against the student for violating the UGC's plagiarism norms. This will assist students improve their understanding, knowledge, communication, and writing skills.

I don't hate Andor but I am conflicted about it. Specifically.... well, there's a lot and I don't want to write a dissertation here.
I just saw a gift of "I've been in this fight since I was six years old," and it got me thinking about the annoying, wholly unnecessary retcons in Andor again.
ETA: Actually, I will add a bit of a dissertation.
I think Andor has some beautiful moments, excellent actors, and good writing (in both character development and plot).
The speech by Luthen, for example ("I burn my life for a sunrise I'll never see") is brilliant both for the sentiment AND for Skarsgard's delivery. As a person that works in labour activism, I actually use that speech in training. Movements are full of people like Luthen (and Andor) and that's something that Star Wars never acknowledges but it's a truth that can inform movements; yes, Martin Luther King was a hero but he wasn't the Civil Rights Movement. There were countless activists that "burned their lives for a sunrise they'll never see" and we should understand their struggles. We should understand that even if we can't be MLK (or Luke Skywalker) that we can be an integral part of the movement.
If you're older than 12 and you want to remain a fan of SW, then you need the franchise to offer some adult content* and Andor (and Rogue One) does that. But....
They could've let some (or all) of Rogue One survive the movie and made a series of their activities through the next 3.5 yrs of rebellion (the length of time between Battle Yavin and Battle Endor). The writers would have been able to get across all the good things in Andor without destroying the seeds in R1. I love Diego Luna (I was a fan before R1) and I love Cassian but I also love Jyn, Bodhi, K2, Chirrut, and Baze. I would've watched the hell out of a show with them fighting the Empire and getting the plans for the 2nd Death Star. Imagine them fighting for a cause they believe in while struggling with the morality of some of their actions. Think of Cassian in the scene where he kills Tivik. Now imagine him being challenged by Jyn, influenced by Bodhi, needled by K2. Come on. Also, the characters would be aging with the actors so we wouldn't have to believe that 40 yr old Diego is 20 yr old Cassian. Just saying.
The retcon of Cassian's background was not only unnecessary; it completely changes his character arc in R1. If they really needed to make a prequel for Andor, what's wrong with a story of a rebel that's been in the fight since he was 6 yrs old?! Remember the image of Cassian when R1 came out was of Palestinian kids throwing rocks at Israeli tanks. That's a fucking awesome story. Instead we get a character that makes a lie out of the character of Cassian in R1. Also, there's no explanation for why no one can know he's from Kenari and they had to create a backstory about Fest or why the planet he was from was called Kenari and not just called Fest. It's a small thing but it also isn't a small thing, if you follow me.
Andor has a lot of good characters and story lines in it but it has some egregious missteps. Maarva is a character with good and bad in her but she's not developed enough for fans to see that, so most people hate her and see her as an abusive foster parent. Has Gilroy never heard of the 60s Scoop? Even if he hadn't, did he think drugging a child and abducting him was a morally neutral act? You know that fans hate Maarva because there's all this fan fiction that includes Cassian's hag of a foster mother who he inexplicably loves and cares for. Mosylu's Hold Me Like a Grudge does Maarva the best, I think, and gets her complexity but clearly people dislike the fuck out of her.
Bix is another misstep. She's essentially fridged for Andor and that's just weak and a disservice to the character. They created a woman with her own life and career, who apologetically sleeps with her boyfriend (SEX?! In SW?!) and tortured her until she was dependent on Andor to save her. I mean. Okay. I guess.
The good stuff - Mon Mothma, her family dynamic and struggles, Dedra and Karn as villains - could've been part of a series that is consistent with R1 canon. Even Luthen could've been part of it all without all the changes.
I can't shake the feeling that Andor is actually a slap in the face to Jyn Erso. Maybe it's the way they gave Cassian some of Jyn's actual back story or maybe it's because Jyn was the protagonist of R1 and she's probably not going to feature in Andor except as a fan service call back right at the end. The old feminist in me gets her hackles up whenever a female character is sidelined in favour of a male character. One of the joys of R1 is that Jyn and Cassian were equals. I would have loved a series that maintained that dynamic, romantic partners or not (but imagine the slow burn of that).

hmmMM I might actually hate andor. specifically I always hated that it retconned so much of what little backstory we had for cassian, and for literally no reason except a quick buck - they could have created a new character instead of making cassian a hypocrite in rogue one. but the real issue is how obnoxious andor fans have been. to hear some of them discuss it, you'd think tony gilroy had invented communism and was leading a revolution 🙄
also it's become impossible to find fic that doesn't use the andor backstory, because no one tags properly, and as a "I've been in this fight since I was six" enjoyer, that's very annoying.

Sometimes I just think about that one scene in 'Throw Me a Goddamn Rope - Just Enough to Hang Myself with It' when Aizawa and Izuku are on the hospital and Aizawa tells Izuku that he could be the worst patient in the world, he could cry and scream and give all the nurses a hard time and Aizawa would still love him and never go away because those kind of things are just sprinkles and they were a family no matter what, and then I just cry quietly because HOLY GOSH THAT WAS DEEP I WAS NOT PREPARED THE GROUP HUG I WAS ON THE FLOOOOOR

this is a chaotic relationship to be in at the best of times because of just how different the brothers are
of course they both love you and they’re fond enough of each other, but there are naturally going to be times where they clash (as all siblings do) and you’re going to get caught up in the middle of it all
they most frequently butt heads when it comes down to whose turn it is to spend time with you — as they do have a schedule — because of some random factor or another

daddy lessons (parenting in spn vs. being human)
I have not been able to stop thinking about this for weeks and it’s making me insane, so apologies to all but here we GO. McNair (Being Human UK) and John Winchester (Supernatural) both raised their sons to be weapons in a secret war and did unforgivable things in the process, but thanks to some key differences in their parenting approach, we get wildly different kids out of the equation. To recap the middle bit of the Venn diagram here, both fathers:
Dragged their kids around the country, raising them like soldiers to fight a supernatural enemy; it’s unclear when anybody’s first kills took place, to my knowledge, but we can safely say that they were at way too young an age
Weaponized the memory of a dead mother as an excuse for their crusade
Moved them around constantly and denied them almost any outside connections; by design, their whole world is wrapped up in each other
Raised their kids (Tom and Dean most successfully*) to have little identity outside of hunting and to be entirely beholden to the cause, leading to a very upsetting self-sacrificial streak
Demanded military-esque obedience; some questions may be allowed here and there, but ultimately dad is the superior officer and it’s his call
Lied repeatedly to their kids “for their own good” and kept them on a need-to-know-basis, even for stuff that they REALLY needed to know
*(I’m generally focusing on Dean & Tom in this analysis, since I think Sam escaped some of this by rebelling against the notion of a “good son”)
Hell, they even had similar deaths (i.e., made the decision to keep their kids in the dark -- rather than, say, explaining anything or asking for help -- and walk into a confrontation with an old enemy that they knew they wouldn’t survive). But despite all this overlap, we end up with two wildly different characters: jaded & emotionally volatile Dean, who drinks & throws punches to cope with feelings and performs toughness as if there’s a panel of judges in the corner at all times; and sincere & emotionally vulnerable Tom, who is also quick to throw a punch but who talks about his feelings, cries easily, and is totally unconcerned with whether or not he’s perceived as tough or masculine. I literally can’t stop thinking about it.
If you ask me, the two diverge thanks to some key differences between the McNair and John Winchester school of parenting. Despite the NUMEROUS mistakes McNair made in Tom’s upbringing, we have to give credit where credit is due:
McNair loved Tom. Unequivocally. Thought he was the best person to ever exist. Told him this daily. Told any given random stranger who stood still long enough in Tom’s general proximity. Reinforced it with physical affection and affirmation. Tom never had cause to doubt this for even a second during his entire upbringing, and it shows.
McNair must have realized at some point that Tom was different, that his take on the world was always going to be a little bit naive. Instead of trying to change this or toughen him up “for his own good” (which I can very much imagine being the John Winchester approach), McNair seems to have thoroughly embraced this aspect of Tom’s nature.
Part of that is expressed through the "code.” McNair raised Tom to live by a strict code geared towards a) survival as nomad werewolf vampire hunters, and b) survival as Tom, specifically, who has incredible physical aptitude but struggles with other kinds of learning & social cues. The code has its downsides (namely the unquestioning obedience bit mentioned above), but otherwise functions as a sort of framework that Tom can follow for navigating the societal rules & interactions he doesn’t fully understand. (There’s also the whole “teaching Tom to respect others” thing, which I could honestly write an entire dissertation on).
Beyond the rules McNair thinks they need to survive, however, McNair seems to delight in Tom simply being Tom. This shines through most with Tom’s disarming sincerity -- which he retains largely because McNair (and society at large) never tried to train or polish it out of him. There are a dozen examples where Tom cuts through layers of conversational propriety and is just genuine, because it doesn’t occur to him to be otherwise. Where other characters (like Hal) can’t help laughing at him at least a little, we see McNair take him seriously, respond with encouragement, and even match his sincerity (see: “You’re perfect”) despite the fact that McNair was raised in a society that would frown on men talking like this to their grown sons.
We therefore end up with a Tom who earnestly says things like “virginity is like a flower” with zero self-consciousness. Who would have come along to tell him men don’t talk about sex like this? McNair certainly wouldn’t have; his top priority throughout is supporting Tom as-is, not molding his personality into some idea of what a man is or should be.
The end result of all this is a very sweet, very straightforward, emotionally vulnerable killing machine. “Always be polite and kind and have the materials to build a bomb,” indeed. Tom is obsessed later on with being “a success” in a very performative way, but -- as all the characters around him repeatedly remind him -- this is not something that McNair ever cared about or put on him.
What I would love to do next is a) also acknowledge the incredibly profound ways that McNair wronged Tom (starting with killing his parents, which cannot be glossed over) and how this fucked him up; b) contrast all this with the John Winchester approach to raising child soldiers (SIGH) to see how it is that we ended up Dean; and c) look at Dean and Tom’s perception of their respective fathers. BUT. I unfortunately have to go do actual work stuff or I am gonna be in big trouble (plus this is getting LONG), so I’m gonna be revisiting this another time. In conclusion tho: Tom McNair fascinates me beyond measure, I cannot get over this, and I do not want to. TBC.

[THOUGHTS ON PEAKY BLINDERS, EPISODE 6 - SERIES 6, “LOCK AND KEY”]
i was halfway through typing a whole post about this episode but then tumblr closed the page and didn't save the draft - i'm furious and cannot be arsed to retype everything, so here are my very summarised thoughts, in absolutely no logical order, lol:
loved the reference to battleship potemkin/the untouchables with the woman and her kids in the middle of the shooting, and how our boys waited for her to leave
i think the reason why we all loved this episode so much was because it respected the contract we all signed when we started watching peaky blinders: amazing quotes that should sound cliche but somehow don't, general grandeur of acting and directing that should take you out of the episode but somehow in this show it works, and eleventh hour turnarounds that we all know are absolutely unrealistic and yet are part of the universe. this episode just won at being what this whole season should have been.
i refuse to fuck on tory benches 😭
i cried during that scene between arthur and tommy. their relationship could be the topic of a dissertation. i think they're a fantastic example of how 1) toxic doesn't mean loveless and 2) you can have a million things happen in a relationship, and still it never really changes
in that scene btw, i thought one of the most interesting quotes was when tommy says that "instead of me, there will be money. because that is what i am!" there is such loneliness in that, and in a way, that loneliness isn't disproven because even through everything, it's still tommy who provides comfort to arthur, not the other way around, even if tommy is the one dying. he's the protector and the provider, but in the end, he's terribly alone and doesn't have much of his own support network.
alfie has a wife which was surprising. also, come on, alfie, you do care.
why was tommy having all of these flashbacks and seizures though???
stephen knight is the best tv writer of his generation and i will accept no arguments to the contrary.

the ira thread and the billy thread were a bit disappointing overall but i felt the resolution was decent and 1), they did avenge polly, and 2), i feel like they did their best with the cards they were dealt with covid + helen mccrory. i did love both shootouts, though, and the line about arthur still being in france broke my heart.
generally, i feel like ruby's death would have been a great plot, had helen not also died. i understand that ruby's death was the original plot pre-covid, and i am assuming that what happened was that sk had this vision of the last scene with ruby running towards tommy. so, they needed to keep that plotline even after killing polly, because ruby needed to be dead for that last scene to happen. but, i think they underestimated how dark the whole series would feel with the two deaths, especially when we all knew one of them was also an irl death. i don't think this ruined the show or the experience for me, but i do think scenaristically, it was probably the one mistake they made this year.
maybe this is me reading too much into this but i loved how when tommy is about to die, he takes his jewellery off. he did in s2 when he really thought he was going to die, but didn't in s5, and i think that's very significant.
the eleventh hour, the armistice on 11/11. i just. brilliant, that man is. absolutely fucking brilliant.
(as a side note on the eleventh hour and to my point on the "contract" above, i loved how this moment was almost breaking the fourth wall saying: 'we know this deus es machina, but this is a show where deus es machina is part of the contract, and that's why it works.' and it did work. but i loved the onscreen acknowledgement of almost "here, we got you, again!")
i do wonder though why would mosley risk inviting him to the wedding if he knew the doctor was going to be there?
looking back, it felt like mosley and diana didn't really have a plot of their own in this series. they were just there to serve the whole tommy plot.
finally: yes, white horses, black horses. we get it, it's obvious. and yet, don't we fucking love it!
so, anyway, this wraps up this season, which i will undoubtedly rewatch once it hits netflix, and which i have to admit, i really loved, despite its flaws. it was an amazing conclusion to what will remain, to me, the best show of the past decade, and the show of my 20s. see you in 2024 for the movie, about ww2, presumably.

Fifth Floor Ghost
The hospital is a brick building only five stories tall, known only as Cassell College Health and Wellness Clinic. Even though it was a small facility, it could have been ranked among the top hospitals in the world for its access to expertise. Some of the most prestigious doctors were Cassell alum and with a single phone call, they could be summoned in an emergency.
Each of the five floors was dedicated to a certain practice. The bottom floor was the emergency and ICU department and pharmacy and general medicine. The second floor was rehabilitation, physical therapy and sports medicine. The third floor was an area for surgeries. The fourth floor was the lab. The fifth floor and the basement were for the more exclusive patients.
There is a rumor that the basement and the Fifth floor of Cassell College clinic were actually haunted. It’s said that at night, if you stare at the upper floor of the clinic, you’ll see the shadow of a person staring out at you from the windows. If you come close, you can hear doors opening and shutting. Or you can hear the sounds of voices floating to your ears from inside.
Some of the professors encourage such rumors, saying that wandering in will provoke the spirits there and that no one should even attempt to enter these forbidden zones for fear of being cursed. Others laugh it off and say that these floors are storage or empty and there is no such thing as ghosts.
Only a few of the oldest members of the college can remember the real dirty history of these floors. Before there were reliable ways to determine the stability of the bloodline, this is where unstable students were taken to be euthanized. The walls were reinforced with concrete and steel. The windows were rigged with traps and explosive devices to keep from being opened.
If the students were members of Hydra or the former Devil Clan, they would immediately recognize this sort of building. It was the same sort of building that was built in the remote mountains of Japan -- The Black prison that held the White King Hybrid Ghosts. The sort of facility that Lu Mingfei found so familiar and had housed Erii Uesugi when she was alive, had originated in Cassell College. They would understand that the people held on those floors were something far worse than any vengeful spirit, and wouldn’t wish to speak of it ever again.
Early every morning, someone stirred at the top floor of this building. Tigre didn’t understand himself to have migrated from one cage in Mexico to another cage at the top of Cassell College clinic. To him, this was heaven to see the light of the sun rise through the small dingy window and hear the song of the birds chirping outside to greet it.
His room is white all around to reflect the light, as though he were in a sea of clouds. He stretched and turned into it, letting the sun warm his face. His calm innocent smile was offset by the horrific scarring on his bare arms, chest and back. It was no wonder he was called, “Tigre” or ‘tiger’. Not only was he strong and deadly, the dark scars resembled stripes.
One had to wonder how someone like him survived to his age. It was frightening to think how he could sustain this many wounds and still be alive and walking.
He reaches over and presses play on a small cellphone. On the phone is the voice of Masashi Toyama. “Tigre, today be sure to shower, brush your teeth for two minutes after you shower and comb your hair well, fold your clothes into the drawer neatly like I showed you…”
These are simple life habits, but habits that Tigre had never had a chance to cultivate. Something as simple as showering and brushing teeth was something he would forget to do or only do half way before he got distracted by something simple, like flushing the toilet or trying to figure out how the light switch actually worked.
He was strong enough and had enough time to take apart everything in his room. It wasn’t unusual for the nursing staff to come and find that he had partially dismantled the furniture or undone the door. How he figured out how to remove the exhaust fan in the bathroom was another mystery. Eventually the maintenance crew went and bolted down everything they could to keep him from pulling it apart again.
He was a strange patient. He was calm and compliant as a child, but his curiosity and strength tore everything around him apart and those around him had to acknowledge that he was not a child but a grown man. Like a child, he didn’t understand that the sudden ratcheting down of everything in the room meant that he wasn’t supposed to touch those things again. He took it as a puzzle. As though he had won the game and now entered ‘Challenge mode.’ He did understand however, when he broke the door completely that maybe he had done something wrong.
It was almost time for Toyama to arrive for his lesson. He listened for his steps in the hall, standing in the middle of the room, still. When he was right at the door, he waited until the door was about to open and then leaped up from a standing start and braced his arms against the corner of the wall just inside the door. He can only maintain this position a short time, his arms and feet pushed against the texture. Toyama walked in and didn’t see him. He looked left and right. His eyes widened in a panic and called out. “Tigre? Tigre!” He hurried forward towards the bathroom to look inside. Tigre leaped from the wall and pushed him into the bathroom and shut the door!
“Tigre! Tigre! No! Bad!” Toyama scolded him.
He opened the door to an empty room again. There were only a few places Tigre could hide. Under the bed was one, but more often, Tigre would just hide in Toyama’s blind spots. He turned to his right and Tigre was standing there. He was so close, Toyama was surprised he didn’t smell him. Toyama staggered backwards with a yelp.
“Tigre! No!” Tigre said, imitating his voice and speaking at the same time as him.
Toyama adjusted his glasses. Normally, such behavior was intolerable from any patient. But Toyama was an expert in Hybrid psychology and high ranking Hybrids were all little maniacs, whether they admitted it or not. If Tigre didn’t torment him a little, he would be more concerned than not. In all frankness, given his 24 hour confinement, these little pranks spoke to his mental stability.
Toyama sighed as he looked at his patient’s sturdy muscular frame in his simple shirt and slacks and bare feet. Those golden eyes shined above his dark glasses with a certain animal intensity, the pupils wide as marbles. He was in a playful mood, but anyone looking at him right now would be absolutely terrified at the eyes of this monster.
Elsewhere in the college, students were waking up to hurry to classes and study for midterms. He was dealing with students who were stressing over dissertations and exams most of the day, so these little moments of wild madness were more welcome than before. He tried to imagine Tigre behind a desk, quietly reading or behind a keyboard typing a report and the thought was so ridiculous that he couldn’t do it.
However, weeks ago, his report to Schneider said that Tigre was starting to pace, and rub his sides against his cage. He was reaching the point where he would start to earnestly try to escape and they needed to release his pent up energy in a meaningful controlled way before they lost all control of the situation.
He expected a rejection. After all, Tigre’s blood was far over the acceptable limit to the point that he should have been considered for euthanasia. To Toyama, this was a pointless and cruel exercise, keeping him confined here, but letting him outside was madness.
He didn’t expect Schneider to respond back with a letter approving nightly outings with Tigre supervised by the Executive Board. The letter expressed that Tigre’s progress has been pleasing so far and they look forward to his continued improvement.
Toyama was speechless at this message. Schneider understood more than anyone the terrible power of unstable hybrids and that they were in a war against dragons. Dragons were the enemies of humans, like the wolf was a natural enemy to the deer. It wasn’t something that could be changed by treaties or by talks.
Some might point to some small examples, such as a lioness that had adopted a baby antelope as its cub. Even though this lioness protected the poor calf as best as it could, one day, the lioness turned her back at the wrong time, and a male lion devoured her pet. Even though the lioness might have felt some negative emotions, there was nothing she could do and in the end, she forgot about her little ‘pet baby antelope’ and didn’t mourn for it.
This was the opposite. They were adopting a lion into a herd of antelope. This young man was more dragon than he was human. Tigre was fond of Toyama now, but when his true nature took over, would he feel any remorse in killing anyone?
Schneider wasn’t a complete fool and promised him that precautions would be put in place for the outings. On the first night he went out, the area was cleared of all human presence, snipers were placed on roofs and a Predator drone hummed threateningly in the air. Tigre was none the wiser as he explored the college, his face wreathed in a smile. He looked up and leaped into the tree to pluck off a leaf and admire it in the dark.
In that unnatural quiet, Toyama walked with him alone. They passed by the statuesque architecture, worn by a hundred years of weather, looking at the stars between the branches of the trees, faint from the city lights, the moon seeming to hang low between the buildings. If one wasn’t aware of the situation, they could be excused for thinking that Toyama was walking with a close relative, like a son.
But after some time, the differences between them became more apparent, Tigre would get distracted by a sound, and his muscles and senses would key up, and he would stop, on high alert. Toyama would allow him to follow the sound, occasionally taking them both into drainage ditches and patches of landscaping, until he found what he was looking for -- a stray cat, opossum or raccoon. Soon, Toyama was getting well acquainted with Cassell College’s wildlife.
Tigre wouldn’t harass them though, he would just sit and watch their behavior, which was always growling and snarling. Tigre didn’t understand that his aura was the intimidating aura of a predator that had cornered its prey.
It was this aura that Toyama aimed to tame. He couldn’t remove that nature from him. He could only redirect it to innocent pursuits. Rather than hunting animals around the college, he took to ‘studying’ them. Rather than cornering them, he shadowed them and made observations. Then he finally taught him to make reports and turn them in to him as homework. These reports he also turned into Schneider for his analysis.
Schneider would send them back with notes, asking questions which he would return to Tigre for a response. In this way, Schneider and Tigre got acquainted with each other.
Finally, after several days, Schneider met with Principal Anjou and Vice Principal Franco at a trendy night club. Toyama wasn’t sure what was said, but the next morning it was announced that Tigre was going to be inducted as an official student at Cassell College and Toyama should preside over his 3E exam. Toyama had hoped that Tigre would be matriculated privately and quietly but in this case, it was decided that he would be enrolled normally, as though he were no different.
Toyama felt that he could argue with Schneider, but he couldn’t argue with him and the two Principals. His continued training would have to happen outside his jurisdiction.
“Tigre…” Toyama looked at him with kind and sad eyes. “Today you have a very special test. This test will take you to be one of Cassell’s official students.”
“Really?” Tigre’s eyes widened.
“I will tell you a bit about it, so that you are not surprised. You will hear music and then you will hear a voice in the speakers. This voice will speak to your heart in a way no other voice has spoken to you before. There will be a series of questions and you will write down the answers to the best of your ability. Understand?”
Tigre nodded. “Yes.”
“No matter what. Please remember… you mustn’t hurt anyone. Even if you really want to. Understand?”
Tigre tilted his head. “I understand.”
“Okay…” Toyama considered for a few more seconds and pulled Tigre into an awkward hug. “You’ve done very well. Keep doing well.”

Queer-coding and Queer-baiting with focus on Disney and modern media
- both are issues for the LGBTQIA+ community as they seek to capitalize on these marginalized groups
- Queer-baiting: portraying an obviously queer relationships with the use of cues and subtext without acknowledging it or perhaps even gas lighting it.
- Queer-coding: writing a character with queer stereotypes as a form of representation without explicitly acknowledging that the character is queer.
Queer-coding isn’t always bad. It’s all about the creators’ intentions.
Queer-baiting however is pretty much always harmful.

Question
Is representation of LGBT individuals in animation and other forms of entertaining media good for the community or just a way for corporate big wigs to swindle money from hopeful queer people who would pay to see at least one shred of a character who is like them?
Limitations
- it may be hard for me to stay objective given that I’m in the LGBT community myself
- risk of outdated sources and temporal context problems. A project of its time will certainly play a part but more importantly the LGBT community is quite fickle it changes a lot as new identities and constructs get introduced so it may be hard to find a viable source.
Background
The Hays code was published in 1930 and was based on three general principles:
- no picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin.
- correct standards of life, subject only to the requirements of drama entertainment, shall be presented.
- Law, natural or human, shall not be included, nor shall sympathy be created for its violation.
These were developed in a series of rules grouped under the self-explanatory headings Crimes Against The Law, Sex, Vulgarity, Obscenity, Profanity, Costume Dances (I.e. suggestive movements), Religion, Locations (I.e. the bedroom) National Feelings, Titles and Repellent Subjects'' (extremely graphic violence)
Typical features of queer- coded characters
- high cheekbones
- thin bodies
- feminine beauty
- dramatic of voice and actions
- male characters may talk or sing in falsetto or have camp ness to their voice and a female character will most likely have a deeper voice (Maleficent, Evil Queen, Ursula- who is actually based on a drag queen)
- these characters may also drag out their words and walk about at though slinking (Scar, the Lion King)
Examples or queer-baiting
- Myka Bearing and H.G. Wells (Warehouse13, SYFY)
Warehouse13 took a hit in ratings after its fourth season, meaning its fifth only had 6 episodes. It seemed to queer fans in particular that Myka and HG had a blossoming romance. It was even confirmed in the last episode that HG is indeed Bisexual but also in the last episode, Myka ends up with series long partner who at many points has been akin to the brother she never had. Their relationship was definitely flirtatious and I'm not saying that closing out the electric romantic arc between them would have saved the show, it was cancelled anyway, but It would have been nice since the interactions that HG and Myka had were actually what pushed fans to secure the final season. However you can’t be too mad as the show does have probably one of the best portrayals of a gay character on tv.
- Sherlock and John Watson ( Sherlock, BBC)
- Captain America and Bucky Barnes (MCU)
- Spock and Kirk ( Star Trek, NBC)
- Emma and Regina (Ounce Upon A Time, ABC)

Lycanthropy
- seems to be synonymous with the homosexuality- parallels between teen Wolf and Buffy the vampire slayer’s respective coming out scenes
- the Queer-ness of Professor Lupin from the Harry Potter Franchise- J.K Rowling has admitted that Lupin’s Lycanthropy is a metaphor for AIDS/ HIV but has further dismissed fans’ theories that Lupin is Queer.
- Homophobia and HIV- homophobia acts as a major barrier to ending the AIDS crisis and at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, gay men were so my led out to receive abuse as many believed they were responsible for transmitting the disease.
Overall aims
- explore the impact of queer-baiting on queer communities
- investigate true intentions behind the Hays Code
- Make people aware of what’s good representation and what’s bad representation.
Research methods
I plan to use relevant books and articles. I will also be looking to Disney films from the Disney renaissance era and looking into monster stories such as the Wolfman and Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein's Monster, paying close attention to subtext and possible parallels as well as comparing them with more modern sources such as Harry Potter and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
These are appropriate methods of research because they will allow me to get others’ perspectives on the topic and allow me to analyze the villains and monsters in detail and give me visual material to talk about deeply.
Potential outcomes
- The research will be helpful for me because it will allow me to increase my awareness on a subject that I am already passionate about and interested in.
- in a wider context this may help more people to understand the meaning and history behind the characteristics of their favorite villain and any possible subtext that may be lurking beneath them.
- educate those that are unaware or the issues queer-baiting and queer-coding pose.

I had a fantastic conversation the other day with a senior graduate student at my institution, because I was considering rotating with her PI and knew she hadn’t had the best experience with him. I ended up taking a bunch of notes (feat. my uni alpha-gel shaker mechanical pencil with the comfiest grip ever) but she offered some really insightful advice on picking grad school mentors! The major takeaways are:
People talk about picking a mentor over a project, and people talk about a mentor being “hands-on” or “hands-off”, but that pertains only to one side of the mentoring skillset you need. In addition to the interpersonal relationship, your PI needs to have a skillset pertaining specifically to choosing, guiding, and managing scientific projects in their capacity as a PI. Newer, less experienced PIs don’t have this experience, even if they were awesome post-docs. That’s why some institutions pair new PIs with their own committees of more experienced PIs (but ours doesn’t).
If your dissertation project is not going anywhere, and your PI doesn’t realize that, or doesn’t see fit to tell you (see below point re: PI’s best interests), and your PI is spinning your efforts to seem more productive than they are in front of your committee, there is a very real chance of you wasting years working on a project that will not get you published or move you toward graduation.
On that note, getting published and graduating are two distinct goals as a grad student, and though they commonly intersect they are not one and the same, especially if you don’t plan to stay in research after your degree
What kind of project to look for:
Hypothesis-driven, with preliminary data! (Fishing expeditions are a valid form of research but are rarely appropriate for PhDs because there is pressure to go beyond generating hits for a screen and to spend several additional years actually testing hypotheses. Basically you do two PhDs worth of work for one degree)
Fishing expeditions are fine early in your PhD journey so long as you have a hypothesis-driven project to fall back on
Reliant on central methods that already currently work in your lab! (It’s fine to develop new techniques for parts of your project, but the whole thing shouldn’t depend on something that your lab can’t already reliably do)
Independent aims! (Does A affect B? Does A affect C? Does A affect D? NOT Does A affect B, and assuming it does how does that relationship modulate C?)
Your PI doesn’t always have the same motivations as you. Especially for new PIs with more acute pressure to get funding, sending you on a fishing expedition or directing you toward a “sexier” and more popular field may have higher impacts for your PI’s funding and reputation if you get results, but also puts you at higher risk for delaying graduation (and having a lower quality dissertation) if you don’t.
How to vet potential PIs:
Look at the number of grad students they’ve graduated, how long it took them, the type of data in their dissertations and papers, and (if you can talk to the students, or even if not) try to gauge whether the projects were intentional and well thought through
Look at their funding. It’s not a direct tell, but a pattern of unsuccessful grad students or a tendency to poke around in lots of research directions without committing to well-defined projects can show up in less funding.
Talking to current lab members is very valuable, but past lab members have no more skin in the game and can be much more honest about the successes, challenges, and long-term impact of the lab experience
Ask potential PIs before/during a rotation: What is an example of a thesis project you’d recommend / how would you turn my rotation project into a thesis project? What would be the scope? What kinds of aims would you write?
Check whether the aims are independent, whether they acknowledge the time course of a grad student being around for 4-5 years, whether they depend primarily on methods they’ve tried and tested, and whether the projects they propose are hypothesis-driven.
Gauge their reaction! Is it “wow this person knows what they want, I want an independent think like this in my lab” or is it “how dare they challenge my authority / question my intelligence”? The reaction can be very telling for your future working relationship
Consider their years of experience, and if they are less experienced, what mentorship they have from more experienced PIs or how you can solicit the input of a trusted and more experienced PI to safeguard yourself
This conversation was really eye-opening to me because I hadn’t thought beyond the interpersonal aspect of searching for a grad school mentor and had assumed that being a good scientist would be telling of good lab and project management skills. Turns out that isn’t the case! I’m hoping some other future or first year research grad students can take something new away from this post and end up with a better mentor because of it!!!

How to structure a nursing dissertation
A nursing dissertation or thesis is a long piece of academic writing based on original research, submitted as part of a doctoral, master’s, or bachelor’s degree. Your dissertation is probably the longest piece of writing you’ve ever done, and it can be intimidating to know where to start. This article helps you work out exactly what you should include and where to include it. You can also download our full dissertation template in .docx or Google Docs format. The template includes a ready-made table of contents with notes on what to include in each chapter. You can adapt it to your own requirements. Table of contents Deciding on your nursing dissertation structure Title page Acknowledgements Abstract Table of contents List of figures and tables List of abbreviations Glossary Introduction Literature review / Theoretical framework Methodology Results Discussion Conclusion Reference list Appendices Editing and proofreading Deciding on your dissertation’s structure Not all nursing dissertations are structured exactly the same – the form your research takes will depend on your location, discipline, topic and approach. For example, dissertations in the humanities are often structured more like a long nursing essay, building an overall argument to support a central thesis, with chapters organized around different themes or case studies. But if you’re doing empirical research in the sciences or social sciences, your dissertation should generally contain all of the following elements. In many cases, each will be a separate chapter, but sometimes you might combine them. For example, in certain kinds of qualitative social science, the results and discussion will be woven together rather than separated. The order of sections can also vary between fields and countries. For example, some universities advise that the conclusion should always come before the discussion. If in doubt about how your thesis or dissertation should be structured, always check your department’s guidelines and consult with your supervisor. Title page The very first page of your document contains your dissertation’s title, your name, department, institution, nursing degree program, and submission date. Sometimes it also includes your student number, your supervisor’s name, and the university’s logo. Many programs have strict requirements for formatting the dissertation title page. Acknowledgements The acknowledgements section is usually optional, and gives space for you to thank everyone who helped you in writing your dissertation. This might include your supervisors, participants in your research, and friends or family who supported you. Abstract The abstract is a short summary of your dissertation, usually about 150–300 words nursing essays. You should write it at the very end, when you’ve completed the rest of the dissertation. In the abstract, make sure to: State the main topic and aims of your research Describe the methods you used Summarize the main results State your conclusions Although the abstract is very short, it’s the first part (and sometimes the only part) of your dissertation that people will read, so it’s important that you get it right. If you’re struggling to write a strong abstract, read our guide on how to write an abstract. Table of contents In the table of contents, list all of your chapters and subheadings and their page numbers. The dissertation contents page gives the reader an overview of your structure and helps easily navigate the document. All parts of your dissertation should be included in the table of contents, including the appendices. You can generate a table of contents automatically in Word if you used heading styles. List of figures and tables If you have used a lot of tables and figures in your dissertation, you should itemize them in a numbered list. You can automatically generate this list using the Insert Caption feature in Word. List of abbreviations If you have used a lot of abbreviations in your dissertation, you can include them in an alphabetized list of abbreviations so that the reader can easily look up their meanings. Glossary If you have used a lot of highly specialized terms that will not be familiar to your reader, it might be a good idea to include a glossary. List the terms alphabetically and explain each term with a brief description or definition. Introduction In the introduction, you set up your dissertation’s topic, purpose, and relevance, and tell the reader what to expect in the rest of the dissertation. The introduction should: Establish your research topic, giving necessary background information to contextualize your work Narrow down the focus and define the scope of the research Discuss the state of existing research on the topic, showing your work’s relevance to a broader problem or debate Clearly state your research questions and objectives Give an overview of your dissertation’s structure Everything in the introduction should be clear, engaging, and relevant to your research. By the end, the reader should understand the what, why and how of your research. If you need more help, read our guide on how to write a dissertation introduction. Literature review / Theoretical framework Before you start on your research, you should have conducted a literature review to gain a thorough understanding of the academic work that already exists on your topic. This means: Collecting sources (e.g. books and journal articles) and selecting the most relevant ones Critically evaluating and analyzing each source Drawing connections between them (e.g. themes, patterns, conflicts, gaps) to make an overall point In the dissertation literature review chapter or section, you shouldn’t just summarize existing studies, but develop a coherent structure and argument that leads to a clear basis or justification for your own research. For example, it might aim to show how your research: Addresses a gap in the literature Takes a new theoretical or methodological approach to the topic Proposes a solution to an unresolved problem Advances a theoretical debate Builds on and strengthens existing knowledge with new data The literature review often becomes the basis for a theoretical framework, in which you define and analyze the key theories, concepts and models that frame your research. In this section you can answer descriptive research questions about the relationship between concepts or variables. Methodology The methodology chapter or section describes how you conducted your research, allowing your reader to assess its validity. You should generally include: The overall approach and type of research (e.g. qualitative, quantitative, experimental, ethnographic) Your methods of collecting data (e.g. interviews, surveys, archives) Details of where, when, and with whom the research took place Your methods of analyzing data (e.g. statistical analysis, discourse analysis) Tools and materials you used (e.g. computer programs, lab equipment) A discussion of any obstacles you faced in conducting the research and how you overcame them An evaluation or justification of your methods Your aim in the methodology is to accurately report what you did, as well as convincing the reader that this was the best approach to answering your research questions or objectives. nursing school , you report the results of your research. You can structure this section around sub-questions, hypotheses, or themes. In some disciplines, the results section is strictly separated from the discussion, while in others the two are combined. For example, in qualitative methods like ethnography, the presentation of the data will often be woven together with discussion and analysis. However, in quantitative and experimental research, the results should be presented separately before you discuss their meaning: Concisely state each relevant result, including relevant descriptive statistics (e.g. means, standard deviations) and inferential statistics (e.g. test statistics, p-values). Briefly state how the result relates to the question or whether the hypothesis was supported. Include tables and figures if they help the reader understand your results. Report all results that are relevant to your research questions, including any that did not meet your expectations. Don’t include subjective interpretations or speculation. Additional data (including raw numbers, full questionnaires, or interview transcripts) can be included as an appendix. Discussion The discussion is where you explore the meaning and implications of your results in relation to your research questions. Here you should interpret the results in detail, discussing whether they met your expectations and how well they fit with the framework that you built in earlier chapters. Give your interpretations: what do the results mean? Explore the implications: why do the results matter? Acknowledge the limitations: what can’t the results tell us? If any of the results were unexpected, offer explanations for why this might be. It’s a good idea to consider alternative interpretations of your data. The discussion should refer back to relevant sources to show how your results fit with existing knowledge. Conclusion The dissertation conclusion should concisely answer the main research question, leaving the reader with a clear understanding of your central argument and emphasizing what your research has contributed. In some academic conventions, the conclusion refers to a short section that comes before the discussion: first you directly state your overall conclusions, then you discuss and interpret their meaning. In other contexts, however, the conclusion refers to the final chapter, where you wrap up your dissertation with a final reflection on what you found. This type of conclusion often also includes recommendations for future research or practice. In this chapter, it’s important to leave the reader with a clear impression of why your research matters. What have you added to what was already known? Reference list You must include full details of all sources that you have cited in a reference list (sometimes also called a works cited list or bibliography). It’s important to follow a consistent citation style. Each style has strict and specific requirements for how to format your sources in the reference list. Common styles include APA and MLA, but your program will often specify which citation style you should use – make sure to check the requirements, and ask your supervisor if you’re unsure. Appendices Your dissertation itself should contain only essential information that directly contributes to answering your research question. Documents you have used that do not fit into the main body of your dissertation (such as interview transcripts, survey questions or tables with full figures) can be added as appendices. Editing and proofreading Making sure all the sections are in the right place is only the first step to a well-written dissertation. Leave plenty of time for editing and proofreading. Grammar mistakes and sloppy formatting errors can drag down the quality of your hard work. You should plan to write and revise several drafts of your thesis or dissertation before focusing on language mistakes, typos and inconsistencies.
