It started in history class last year.

El’s teacher had been trying (and failing) to set up the overhead projector for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the class was growing antsier by the minute; hushed whispers quickly escalated into full-on conversations, laughter, and before long, no one seemed to care that they were even in class anymore.

The teacher had not only given up on trying to hold back muttered curses of frustration, but also on fixing the projector himself. As the students chucked spitballs and paper airplanes at each other, he called the office, asking for an A.V. club student to come over and fix the “goddamn thing.”

Minutes later, Mike had walked in wearing one of his dorky wool sweaters and a hall pass lanyard around his neck. “What’s the problem?” He’d asked, glancing between the rowdy class and red-faced teacher in both hesitance and alarm.

“This damn projector won’t turn on!” The teacher huffed in reply, “All these good-for-nothing technologies they make us use now…back in my day, there was nothing wrong with good, old-fashioned books and chalkboards!”

“Right,” Mike had said in a dismissive sort of way that made El snort. He moved over to examine the projector more closely, getting out a handful of tools from his backpack.

El had watched as he worked, and though he didn’t notice her, she found herself noticing everything about him. Like the way he pushed up his sleeves, the way he looked so focused, the way he tucked his pocket screwdriver behind his ear when he wasn’t using it, or the way that smiled excitedly when he’d figured something out.

Her heart had done a weird flip-floppy thing in her chest, and as it beat slightly faster, it matched the rhythm of her train of thought: cute, cute, cute, cute.

For a moment, she’d wondered if she was getting sick. She certainly felt like it. Sick and crazy and ridiculous. She knew nothing about him but wanted to know everything.

“There,” Mike had said once he’d finished, “You just had to adjust the Fresnel lens, nothing serious.”

The teacher furrowed his brow. “The what?”

“The condenser?” Mike offered. When the teacher still looked lost, Mike continued, more slowly, “The big glass thing.”

“Oh. Thanks.”

“No problem.”

Mike left the room, El was left reeling.

He’s still wearing that same sweater today, El notices as she sneakily examines him from across the biology classroom. Even though he’s seated in the front row and she’s all the way in the back, she still has a pretty good angle on him. Since his back is to her, she doesn’t even have to worry about him catching her.

As she watches him take notes, she half-heartedly realizes that she’s kind of acting like a total weirdo. Then again, that isn’t far off from her reputation around school.

El knows what other kids at school think of her. She’s not an idiot — she sees the frightened glances she and Max get in when they enter school with their ripped jeans and dark eyeshadow, or the whispers that are exchanged when they’re busted for something.

And yet, while every other student seems to notice her, and how different she is, to Mike, she’s practically invisible.

Well, at least, she was.

Her mind goes back to last Friday, to that grungy detention room. When El and Max had entered, and El had seen them, him, she hadn’t been able to stop herself from gasping, though it was only loud enough for Max to hear.

“What?” Max had hissed, glancing back at her.

“Nothing,” El had muttered quickly.

“You know these dweebs?” Max moved her gaze towards the boys in their desks.

“I know Mike,” El had admitted, hoping she didn’t sound too nervous, “He’s president of the A.V. Club.”

Mortensen had turned to lecture them after that, shutting down any further questions from Max, which El was immensely grateful for. She’s definitely not ready to let Max know that she has a crush on a ‘dweeb’ like Mike. She’d never hear the end of all the teasing.

But despite Max almost finding out about her crush, last Friday was definitely the best day ever. Mike had sat right next to her. Without her even asking. And he’d talked to her.

Just thinking about it makes El want to explode, but in a good way. It also makes her doodle hearts in the corner of her notebook as she daydreams about Mike and all the various ways he could confess that he can’t stop thinking about her, either.

She’s in the middle of imagining an elaborate scenario that involves a bouquet of waffles and a motorcycle ride when she abruptly realizes that everyone in the class, including the teacher, including Mike, is staring at her.

She freezes, wishing more than anything that she could disappear. Should she say anything? She can’t just keep sitting here, looking like a total mouthbreather…

“Eleanor?” The teacher, Mrs. Hawthorne, asks. She’s looking at El over the rim of her glasses, the way she always does when she’s had it up to here with someone. “Can you answer the question?”

What question? She wasn’t even listening!

El swallows, cheeks feeling hot. “I…uh…I don’t know,” she mumbles quietly.

“I don’t know,” Troy, Hawkins High’s resident asshole, quietly mimics in a squeaky voice, earning a hushed round of snickers from his cronies.

El gives him a death glare, but Troy ignores her.

“That’s ok,” her teacher says gently, “But you need to pay attention.” This only causes more snickers from Troy and his friends, and El can feel her hands start to shake.

Keep it under control. Not here, not here.

She takes a deep breath and relinquishes her grasp just as the teacher asks, “Can anyone else answer the question?”

Mike raises his hand, and El feels her heart skip a beat. “The nictitating membrane is a frog’s third eyelid,” He answers easily, “It helps the frog keep its eye moistened.”

“Frogface,” Troy not-so-subtly coughs.

Mike rolls his eyes, but El notices the red tinge of embarrassment creeping up his cheeks. For the second time in the past minute, she wants to completely destroy Troy, or, at the very least, give him what he deserves (which, to be fair, is complete destruction).

“Thank you, Michael,” Their professor says, throwing Troy a dirty look. “Now that we’ve covered the pre-lab questions, I think we oughta get started with the experiment.”

Experiment? El turns her focus to the board, trying to remember what they’re even studying right now.

“For the frog dissection, I’m going to assign you partners at random,” Mrs. Hawthorne explains.

Oh right. They were dissecting frogs today. Remembering this makes El’s stomach churn, and she starts to feel anxious. This is a class that she’s been dreading ever since their teacher first mentioned it, though she’d completely forgotten that they were doing it today.

Mrs. Hawthorne starts reading out names in pairs, matching students up with their respective lab partners. El crosses her fingers under her desk, hoping, praying, she won’t get Troy. He’s the only thing, at least that she can think of, that’s more disgusting than having to cut open a frog.

“Eleanor...”

Please not Troy, please not Troy, ANYONE but Troy...

“...You’ll be working with Michael.”

El freezes. Michael? As in…

Mike turns to glance back at her with a small smile, and El feels herself melt. Seriously. Her heart feels all mushy and her stomach is all flip-floppy and it takes everything within El to not grin like an idiot. Nevertheless, she’s able to maintain the indifferent, stoic look that she often sports around school — the look that shields her from seeming like the total dope she feels like on the inside.

Mrs. Hawthorne finishes pairing up the rest of the class. When she tells everyone to get started, the whole class gets up in a chaotic flurry of movement. Everyone’s running to either their partner, their lab table, or the supply closet in the back of the room. El is just rising to her feet — legs feeling like Jell-O — when suddenly Mike is standing right in front of her and she’s trying to remember how to blink properly.

“Hey,” he says.

“Hey,” she replies, suddenly feeling self-conscious about everything she’s doing, like how she’s standing. Should she put her hands in his pockets, like he’s doing, or should she cross them? On her hips? WHY was worrying about this, again?

“So, I guess we’re like, partners,” Mike says.

“Yeah,” El says, amazed at just how nonchalant she’s able to sound, considering the circumstances.

Mike glances around the busy classroom. “So, I can go get the supplies, if you want, it looks pretty gnarly back there,” he offers. “And you can get us a table.”

El nods. “Okay.”

Mike gives her another small smile, and despite her desperate attempts to remain as laid-back as possible, she finds herself smiling back.

The two part ways. As El finds them a lab table, she can’t help but feel frustrated. Being closed-off from people is her form of protection. It keeps people like Troy from learning her vulnerabilities, and, she realizes as she glances down at her own hands, her strengths.

But Mike…

Mike undoes everything. Mike makes El want to smile and giggle and blush and act like a total knucklehead. She’s happy with being a loner, happy with being able to trust Max and Max alone. It’s safe, comfortable. Her feelings for Mike, on the other hand?

Completely terrifying.

Mike returns with a tray of goggles, gloves, forceps, pins, and a plastic container that smells an indescribable kind of terrible. The pungent odor makes El crinkle up her nose, and she looks up at Mike skeptically.

“Yeah, this thing totally reeks,” Mike gripes, passing her a pair of safety goggles.

“Totally,” El agrees, taking the goggles. Their fingers brush for the briefest of moments, and El feels her cheeks grow warm.

El tries not to stare as Mike slips on his safety goggles. The strap brushes against his hair and makes it floof up slightly.

Cute, cute, cute, cute.

They slip on some plastic gloves, line the tools up in a row, and remove the frog from the plastic container. El feels her stomach churn again as Mike lays the frog’s stiff, frozen body out on the tray.

Mike gets out their teacher’s Xeroxed lab instructions and reads them over quickly.

“Alright, so,” he begins, pushing up his sleeves and getting their tools out, “It looks like we have to identify the organs and fill out the diagram on this worksheet,” he turns to her, holding out the scalpel, “Do you want to do the cutting?”

El’s eyes widen. She glances at the scalpel, at Mike, and shakes her head quickly. “I’ll do the worksheet,” she offers, pulling the paper closer to her.

“Aww, you’re not scared, are you?” Mike teases. “It’s just a little frog.” He holds up the frog’s arm and makes it wave at her.

“No!” El tries to hold back both a giggle and cry of disgust, but instead gives off a strangled sort of snorting sound that only makes Mike smile even more.

El composes herself and gives him her best-annoyed look, “It’s gross.”

“It’s not THAT gross,” Mike replies, “I mean, it’s a little gross, but it’s also super cool! Like, we’re gonna get to see all his intestines and his liver and stuff!”

He’s definitely not wrong about that.

Once Mike cuts the frog open, they can see every last veiny, slimy, nasty organ inside. El keeps her eyes trained either on Mike or their worksheet, knowing that she won’t be able to last a minute if she has to keep looking at the poor frog.

Mike seems aware of this, as he doesn’t tease her anymore. Instead, he takes on the tasks of cutting, examining, and prying. He seems really into it, if the way he excitedly babbles about the abnormal length of the spleen means anything. Even though it’s still super gross, the way Mike explains it to her — passionately, earnestly, an excited glint on his eye — she can’t help but admire his efforts to make it less scary.

He’s a total nerd about the whole thing, and yet, El finds herself loving every moment of it.

When the class ends and it’s time to pack up, El finds herself actually upset that it’s over.

“See, that wasn’t so bad, was it?” Mike asks her as they properly dispose of the frog and remove their gloves, “I mean, it smelt really weird, and I know you didn’t like all the organs, or how it kinda squirted frog guts everywhere when I accidentally punctured the —“

“Mike,” El cuts him off, not really wanting to relive that particular moment, “It was fine.”

“Really?” Mike slides his goggles up, and now that they’re resting in his scruffy hair, El notices the splay of freckles scattered across his nose and cheeks.

Cute, cute, cute, cute.

El swallows and nods. “Yeah.”

Mike gives her another smile as they finish cleaning up. They conclude just as the bell rings, signaling the end of class.

As their classmates file out of the room, El goes back to her desk to get her things. Mike grabs his backpack and slowly makes his way over to the doorway but doesn’t leave, and it’s only when El notices the glances he keeps giving her that she realizes he’s stalling for her.

El holds back a smile as she makes her way towards the door, hoping Mike can’t tell that every step she takes towards him makes her heart flutter all the more.

“By the way,” Mike says as she approaches him and the two walk into the bustling hallway together, “How’d you solve my Rubik’s cube? I’ve been working on it forever.”

El shrugs, still a little unsure herself. “I just tried.”

“Seriously? I can’t believe you did it so fast! Like, you were amazing!”

Amazing? El glances up at him, eyes wide, and Mike suddenly looks alarmed.

“I mean, how fast you did it was amazing, not that you, personally, are amazing,” he quickly amends, “Not that you’re not amazing, though! You’re pretty cool, I guess. I mean, you seem cool, I know we’ve never really talked before or anything, but maybe — ”

“Mike!” Someone calls out.

El looks over to see Mike’s friends waiting at the end of the hall, huddle by his locker. Mike looks relieved for the interruption and immediately stops babbling.

“Well, I gotta go,” he instead says to El, giving her an apologetic look. “But maybe I’ll see you later?”

“Yeah,” El replies, trying not to sound too hopeful, and just like that, Mike is off.

“Why were you walking with HER?” El hears one of his friends — Dustin, she’s pretty sure — ask before the boys submerge into the rushing crowd of Hawkins High students, out of earshot.

As Mike disappears from view, El is suddenly left wondering if that was the conclusion to their story. Was that the last time they’d ever speak to each other? The last time he’d ever acknowledge that she existed? What did ‘maybe I’ll see you later,’ mean, anyway?

El looks down at her hands. She knows she’s different, powerful, dangerous — and yet, all she feels now is a delirious sort of weakness.

She’s turning into such a knucklehead. A blushing, embarrassingly love-sick knucklehead.

And yet…

She doesn’t completely hate it.

El crosses her fingers and desperately hopes that she won’t become invisible to him again.

MPPSC Prelims Preparation

The first step to enter in MPPSC is prelims exam so you have to be very careful, serious and focused while preparing for the mppsc pre exam. It consists of two papers Paper 1 for General Studies it is of 200 marks having 100 questions each having 2 marks with no negative marking. This is the scoring paper of prelims exam for mains this is the only paper on it's basis you will got selection in mains. You can divide it in 3 parts First Special: approx 20 question comes out 0f 100, you are giving exam for MP state psc then your knowledge about your state should be very much strong. Second part is Current Affairs: at least 10 questions comes from current affairs, The national issues which are currently running in our country you have to knowledge about that, for this read 2 news papers at least. give at least 2 hours to news paper reading for current affairs news. By this your mains exam preparation will be done. Third part is Acts (SC/ST, HR, CR): These are 3 acts added by MPPSC board in syllabus you should have deep knowledge about SC/ST Act, Human Rights Protection Act, Civil Rights Protection Act. Easily 10 question will be coverd by this acts section. So the 40 marks will be covered by these 3 topics MP, Current and Acts. You can crack prelims easily by preparing this three topics so strongly. Remaining 60% will be covered by other subjects like science, history, geography etc.

Paper 2 for General Aptitude it is of 200 marks having 100 questions each having 2 marks with no negative marking. It is qualifying paper you need to score 40% marks in it to qualify and it can be easily done.

MPPSC Mains: Study Plan -

Generally after Prelims exam result announcement aspirants got 60 days to prepare for the Mains exam. These two months are going to be the most important days of your MPPSC mains preparation. In order to crack this, you need a robust mains study plan along with the relevant study material.

I- MPPSC General Studies Paper I

GS 1 mainly contains Geography and History. These portions are static, lengthy and factual in nature. Therefore, most students, especially first-timers tend to spend almost half of their preparation time on this paper. While the weightage of this paper is around 21 %(300/1400). So, the careful utilization of time is the key.

So, instead of reading it thoroughly, read all the topics mentioned in syllabus once this month and then revise it in next month. For Indian History, you can refer to any book which is comfortable for you. For World History, and other important topics of Geography you can refer to these links. It should not take more than two weeks to complete Paper 1.

II- MPPSC General Studies Paper II

GS 2 mainly covers polity and social issues. Polity has mostly static content for which your prelims preparation will help you. Revise those notes; alternatively, you can prepare polity through M. Laxmikant, one of the best source to read polity. Five days are enough to cover Polity along with Security issues.

Next part is the Social Issues which requires knowledge of current affairs. Static portion like acts, organization etc you can cover from here in very little time. Read the schemes of Central and State government concerning Education, Health, Welfare sector etc. along with other topics mentioned in the syllabus. Prepare your own notes and try to cover this portion in 5-6 days. Notes will help you in revision.

III- MPPSC General Studies Paper III

The first half of MPPSC GS paper 3 covers Indian Economy, whereas other half has these important topics: Science & Technology, Reasoning, and DI, Environment, Energy etc.

For Indian economy, you may refer to Sharma Academy's video lectures or Indian Economy by S.N.Lal. These sources will give you an insight on almost every topic mentioned in the syllabus. Along with this, read the summary of ‘Indian Economic Survey’ and ‘Indian & State Budget 2018’. Also, go through the schemes for rural, urban, and agriculture sector. Try to complete it in 5-6 days.

Fo Environment section, you can refer NCERT Books, you can also read these topics from the internet. As environment portion is limited so complete it in two days.

For Science & Technology, the best strategy is to read out the particular topic from Science NCERT class 7-10. And for emerging technologies refer any notes or read it from various internet feeds. It will take two days to complete this part.

For Reasoning, practice the type of questions asked in previous year papers. Refer the source you used for CSAT preparation during prelims preparation.

IV- MPPSC General Studies Paper IV

GS paper 4 is all about ethics and case studies. Student needs to have a clear perspective and positive mindset to attempt this paper. Some of the topics you can read from any book like Ethics by Lexicon Publication or by Arihant. Try to mug up as many thinkers as you can because in past lot of many questions were asked from this topic.

Around 75 marks out of 200 are from case studies and the easiest way to score in them is to practice as many case studies as you can. Cover the entire ethics paper in 4-5 days.

V- MPPSC Paper V: General Hindi

This paper checks your proficiency in Hindi language. Study Hindi Grammar from any standard book and practice letter, report writing etc to secure good marks and take an edge from other students. Do not devote any particular day for this paper, instead, try to give one our daily to finish one topic from syllabus each day.

VI- MPPSC Paper VI: Essay

This paper has the least weightage but it doesn’t mean it is less important. For essay preparation, read newspaper daily to have good content with you and practice one or two essays every Sunday to get proficiency in writing the essay.

The above preparation will take around 35-40 days to cover the whole syllabus once. Then in the remaining days try to revise whatever you read at least two times. One more thing, like study, practice is also very much important for mains examination. Therefore, you must daily do some answer writing practice, or you can join a test series. Test Series is good idea to evaluate your self try to solve the questions in particular time limit and use a timer to analyse your efficiency to write. Specially in word limit question's answer.

MPPSC: Interview preparation

Interview is the third stage of MPPSC examination in this interviewers evaluate the candidate's potential for civil services and examine their personality it is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for public services. There is no any book or syllabus for interview here you can get high marks with less hard work. Start Interview preparation for MPPSC after the mains exam don't wait for the result. When Time Stops

So... I tried to write a thing... a cute little Japril AU thing! This is one of my favorite AU concepts, so I decided to try it out. It’s not just a College AU, but, you’ll see! I am fairly new to Grey’s and I haven’t written in a long time, so please bare with me. I hope you all like it! Enjoy!

Note: This story revolves around time, so the time you see (00:00:00:00) is for hour, minutes, seconds, milliseconds.

"Arizona! I - I am not wearing that!" I huff in exasperation as I stare at myself in the full body mirror hanging on the wall where Arizona is holding a slim black dress up to me. I turn around and eye the pile of clothes that she made me try on this morning. I shove them off my bed before I sit down with my back against the wall. There has to be at least twenty outfits strung across both our beds and several pairs of shoes thrown all over the floor of our cramped dorm room.

She rolls her eyes at me before she explains, "Come on, April! It's the first day of classes and you need to look nice! Plus, your timers almost up! First impressions are everything, April. You know that."

Her statement catches my attention and causes me to glance at the alarm clock on my dresser.

8:15 a.m.

Arizona walks over to me and yanks on my wrist. She has always been a lot more interested in my timer, since hers has been frozen since she hit puberty. Bold, black numbers stare back at both of us as the timer on my wrist ticks away.

Some people took the time, but I didn’t. Arizona would’ve been one of those people, had she gotten the chance. Now she lives vicariously through me.

“Will you please at least wear something decent? It’s a special day! I know you don’t really care but, if not for you, do it for me!” She gives me her best pouty face and then goes to pick out another outfit from her closet.

“I’m just going to wear jeans and a t-shirt, AZ.” I tell her, but she doesn’t listen to me.

“You wear that every day. Don’t tell me you were planning on wearing those ratty converse, too,” She spins around towards me and catches the guilty look on my face, “April! Can you please try to act excited! This is important for your future!”

“And I appreciate this but I just want to be myself. So he-“ Arizona glares at me, so I correct myself, “or she- should see me how I am on a normal day. I don’t want to give a false impressions either.” I explain to her as I slip on my light blue skinny jeans. She nods and stays quiet. I assume she finally agreed with me, at least enough to not press me any further. I continue getting ready while she occupies herself. I go to put on my favorite baggy t-shirt with our school logo, but I see her frown at me from the doorway. Instead, I reach for the flowy, maroon tank top piled on the bed to please her. I put on my white converse before I deem myself ready to go. As I pass the mirror, I check my appearance and attempt to control my unruly red curls.

“Should I do something with my hair?” I wonder out loud. I grab a hairbrush to comb it out, but before I get the chance, Arizona has already offered to braid it back for me. She quickly fixes it up and I look at the clock again.

9:10 a.m.

“Oh crap! We need to go or we are going to be late!” Arizona grabs her stuff and ushers me to the door.

I take a deep breath as we rush out of the room. Anxiety starts to fill my body and butterflies bounce around my stomach as it finally hits me. I realize how unprepared I actually feel about what is supposed to happen today. I don’t now how act when my timer hits zero! What do I say? How am I supposed to feel? What if nothing happens? Ok, don’t freak out. I start breathing slowly, in and out, to calm myself down. This is a big moment, but that doesn’t mean it has to ruin my day. This is my first last day of college, and I’m not going to let it determine what my day is like. Today sets me up for the rest of senior year. It doesn’t depict how my day is going to go, just how it ends.

Just how it ends.

That wasn’t a very comforting thought.

“Earth to April,” Arizona waves her hand in front of my face, and only then do I realize I have stopped walking, completely captivated by my thoughts, “We need to walk quickly so we don’t show up late to microbiology.” She informs me and then we continue across campus to the science building.

9:30 a.m.

Microbiology.

That’s the class you have to take as a first semester senior on the pre-med track. Why must it be this early in the morning? No one’s paying any attention to the poor professor, but it’s syllabus week, and we all know we won’t be doing anything important.

“Hard to stay a wake isn’t it. I had her last semester. It doesn’t get any better, trust me.” The boy beside me whispers to me and I laugh at his remarks, “I’m Matthew.”

“April.” I smile at him and shake his outstretched hand.

Arizona watches our interaction from her seat behind me with a smirk on her face.

“What are you staring at?” I whisper to her as I lean back in my seat.

She leans forward to get closer to me, “If only you had met him a little later. Right day, wrong time. He’s perfect for you.”

I roll my eyes and turn my attention back to the professor. Matthew continues to make little comments about the way she pronounces certain words, or the way she paces in front of the board with a marker in hand, but has yet to write anything.

10:45 a.m.

She finally dismisses class after what seems like a century and Arizona, Matthew and I practically run out of the door.

“You’d think she would do more than read directly off of the paper she handed out.” Arizona quips.

Matthew chuckles, “Just wait until we have lecture. She reads directly off the slides too. It’s unbearable.”

I scoff and roll my eyes. Sometimes it’s very hard to pay attention to those types of professors, “At least she teaches, I guess!” I try to sound optimistic and Matthew grins widely at me.

We walk along the sidewalk in the quad until I reach the building for my next class.

“Looks like this is my stop.” I wave bye to Matthew as he walks away from us. I turn to Arizona, “Save me a seat by you in lab!” I call after her and she bobs her head in response.

I spin around and hurry up the stairs so I can get to my next class and get a good seat. I’d like to think I’m a good student. I had a 4.0 GPA in high school, and though I haven’t kept it perfect recently, it’s been pretty close! I had to keep it that way so I could get into med school next fall. Yeah, I said med school. I met Arizona my freshman year here, in the pre-med program. We instantly clicked when we met and we have been roommates for three years now. We’re even planning on applying to the same schools for med school. She’s practically my other half, as a best friend.

My wrist reads as I go in to my next class of the day.

11:30 a.m.

The class starts and I zone out knowing that in a few short hours my time will be up. I don’t bother getting to know anyone in the class, because I see no point. I nod along to the professor as she tells us what to expect this semester and all that syllabus week bull crap.

After we get dismissed, I quickly grab lunch by myself at the café by the science building while Arizona is in class.

I check my phone.

12:30 p.m.

I have an hour to kill before my biology lab so I hang around the café and sip on some coffee while I wait. I need to be around people today. I don’t want to be alone with my thoughts because the ticking time bomb on my forearm fills my mind at all times. I play around on my computer until I realize its time to leave.

1:30 p.m.

I spot Arizona in the second row when I enter the room. I take the seat beside her at the lab table and she immediately looks at me, “How much time left?”

I show her my wrist even though I know she already knows the answer.

I glare at her in annoyance and she apologizes, “I’m sorry! You know why I’m like this.”

I immediately regret my rudeness towards her excitement for me. She will never experience this moment. She won’t know the feeling of the timer reaching zero. Her timer is frozen. It froze in some freaky accident when she was in high school. Sometimes that happens, however, it’s rare. The timers’ people were born with glitch and stop working. Sometimes, they freeze and randomly start working again. In rare cases, they freeze because your soul mate was matched with two people, and met the other one first. I have hope for her and the latter, even though she gave up a long time ago.

3:00 p.m.

Lab was over. It’s the first day and they have already having us jump right in. Something about being a senior and how we “should already be prepared for this.”

“I will come back to the room after my last class. Please, go freshen up at least?” Arizona begs me and I just laugh at her.

“But AZ, I want to go back and rest! I still have at least three hours!” I complain and pout.

She rolls her eyes at my act but cracks a smile, “Ok, fine. But when I get back in an hour, I’m fixing your stringy hair. Use your time wisely!” She throws her words over her shoulder as we walk in opposite directions.

“Apes!” Arizona enters our room and slams the door, “I am so hungry! Let’s go to dinner! Maybe your timer will run out while we are there!” I can see that she’s getting just as anxious as I am. This may be my moment, but as I said, it’s kind of hers too.

I look at the clock for the thousandth time today. Stupid time and its strange hold it has over us. It’s a man made concept yet we act as if it runs our lives.

5:05 p.m.

“AZ, it’s barely five o’clock. No one but old people go to dinner at this time!” I laugh at her, but I know why she wants to go. I only have an hour left.

I sigh and then set my laptop on the desk beside my bed.

“Alright, let’s go to dinner. I’m hungry too.” I stand up from the bed and grab her arm. I can feel her bursting with joy. I just know she thinks my timer will stop while we are in the dining hall.

5:20 p.m.

It takes us 15 minutes to eat all our food, but we wait around and talk anyway. After a few minutes, no new people come in and I lose faith that this is my lucky spot. Arizona has left me to talk to a couple of her other friends from the pre-med program, ones who I don’t particularly associate with, but I know them. I decide to take a stroll along the quad because the weather was unbelievably amazing and nice. I fidget as I make it back to my building. It wasn’t quite time yet so I decide to just awkwardly stand there. It was inching closer to 6 o’clock and I was getting anxious. I take a peek at my timer just to see how long I had left.

“April! Hey!” I turn my head as I hear a familiar voice.

“Oh, hey! Matthew, right?” I smile at him as he walks towards me. We stop on the sidewalk right outside my dormitory to talk. I bounce on the balls of my feet in anticipation.

This can’t be it. I already met Matthew today. He can’t be it, can he? The universe doesn’t mess these types of things up. I try to look for his timer on his wrist for a sense of confirmation that this wasn’t happening.

His long sleeves cover up too much of his arm, so I can’t see even a hint of black numbers. My hope is dwindling as Matthew drones on. I zone out. I feel bad about being disappointed, but I can’t help it. I was expecting a real connection or a heart stopping moment.

As I slowly open my eyes I whisper, “Zero,” but it’s not Matthew I see when I open them all the way. I’m met with the most beautiful, crystal blue eyes staring back at me. Everything around me seems to move in slow motion, but all I see is he. My eyes are glued to his mesmerizing ones as he sets me up straight.

“I’m so sorry. I was walking my friend’s dog when he suddenly got away from me,” His eyes suddenly widen as he realizes the dog is still running further and further away, “Oh crap! I have to go catch him!” He takes off running again.

“Wait!” I’m jolted out of my daze when I remember that I didn’t even catch his name, “What’s your name?” I holler at him.

He’s pretty far away and I barely catch when he yells back, “Jackson! What’s yours?”

I smile and respond, “April!”

I’m not sure if he heard for a few minutes until the dog comes passing by a few seconds later with Jackson in toe. He looks up at me one last time and says, “I guess I’ll see you around then, April.” He smiles gorgeously over his shoulder at me as he jogs away.

That was the moment everything had been leading up to. My timer was counting down for this. All the stories we heard growing up about our timers were true. That moment was it. When you meet your soul mate, that was when time stops. Jackson. He made time stop.

It is your responsibility to review this post carefully & be sure that you complete everything as directed.

PART 1

OBJECTIVE:

Based on what we are learning about identity & digital art, along with your research about the medium of Zines; demonstrate your ability to develop a concept & a layout that supports your concept using InDesign, Photoshop & Illustrator to create a dynamic & exciting ZINE incorporating both text & images that showcases your Visual Identity.

Your grade will be determined by your professionalism + technical execution + creative concept + dynamic design.

Your final ZINE project is due at the beginning of class on Thursday 4/20/17 & must include:

No less then 12 pages (this is including the cover).

A dynamic original cover design & layout design that best expresses your creative style & visual identity. Keep in mind every detail (clarity of images, font/typeface, colors of text & pages, layout, ect…) counts.

The main content will be newly created demonstrating your technical & creative ability to express both your artistic inspirations & visual identity which must include both Images & text that you have created with Photoshop & Indesign. You may also incorporate some appropriated content from pre-existing sources that you have re-mixed.

Your bio & photo.

Paper type, binding, size & color(s) should be considered as part of your overall concept as well as work with your budget & timeline.

Your ZINE & Online Portfolio designs should compliment each other in aesthetic.

You will print & bring a minimum of 19 copies to class. You will turn in 2 copies to me & give 1 copy to each person (total of 17) in the class. You should create at least 21 copies total & keep 2 hard copies for your records.

Fill your sketchbook with brainstorming & layout ideas to present on Tues 4/11/17

Be sure all of your images for this book are at least 300dpi before adding them to your ZINEFOLIO layout. You must use high resolution images whenever you print work.

Color will appear duller in print form &/or depending on the type of paper you decide to work with. Adjust the brightness & saturation of all of your images as needed in Photoshop so they print closer to your expectations.

It is highly recommended to make all of these adjustments before you plug them into your layout. It will save you a tremendous amount of time & frustration.

Weekly Update - Monday, March 15, 2021

Commitment - Conviction - Consideration

Good Morning,

Who would have thought we would still be impacted by the pandemic a year ago? I remember the first meetings I attended with local officials. It was characterized as something we could manage like the flu. A short closure period was recommended, but there was confidence things would be back to “normal” soon.

Then, the virus really took hold of the whole world, and our lives were changed forever. From a run on toilet paper to contactless pickups, we all became immersed in a new culture known as COVID-19. At first, I have to say it was a little novel. Working from home sometimes was a nice change of pace. I met my mailman, socially distanced, for the first time in some years. When my day ended, I was home already. There was no commute and more time for things I often was unable to do like exercise and enjoying my neighborhood.

As time passed like many of us, I turned to home improvement projects that had been neglected in the hectic pre-COVID world in which I lived. This was exciting and actually fulfilling. However, there was a trade off occurring that became more and more noticeable. Getting things accomplished around the house was replacing the many social activities that once filled my life. Be it school events or Yankees games with my dad, those very important times were missing. I soon realized that no matter how much you improve your home, personal improvement and well-being takes more than a new paint color. It takes those times of sharing and caring with the ones you love.

So, as I reflect on the year we are continuing to survive, I am confident everyone is looking forward to regaining the ability to be with the family and friends we love. Being able to enjoy a meal together and going to a baseball game will be amazing. I know this may be months away, but hope is here and alive.

As I said at the beginning of 2021, I was choosing “hope” as my word. I am still committed to it more than ever. I hope you are as well.

Budget Update

On Friday, Dominic Barone, Business Manager, and I met with the mayor and his team to review the budget. It was a good meeting, and he appreciated the hard work that went into the budget development. Now, we wait until April 1 for him to announce his proposed budget.

The Town hearing on the budget is scheduled for Monday, April 12, 2021 at 6 pm. That is a time for residents to ask questions of departments on their budgets. The Town Council budget hearing, at which Councilors ask questions, is on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 6:30 pm.

The final budget is set on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. Then, the Board of Education will adopt its budget on Monday, May 24, 2021 at 6:30 pm.

I will continue to keep everyone posted as the process continues.

Federal COVID Relief Funds

As many of you know, there are federal funds coming to each school district to assist with the impact of COVID-19 on our schools. Much of the funding is geared towards providing opportunities for students to regain potential skills and knowledge lost or not acquired during this time. Monies will also be allocated for professional development for staff on instructional practices and social and emotional needs of students and families.

We are in the process of finalizing the ESSR II grant. We have not received information on the most recent federal legislation passed last week. We will keep everyone updated as we gain more information.

The most important fact that we all know and must take into consideration is that the money cannot supplant existing expenses. That means it cannot pay for services we already offer in the district that are budgeted for annually. It also should not be used for resources or services that need to be purchased on an yearly basis. That would not be prudent because those services/resources would not be funded once the grant funding is finished.

As I visited schools this week, I was pleased to hear that staff and students want to get back to as much normalcy as possible. The students I spoke with at the middle and high school level really miss their peers. The staff misses more students in person to complete the class dynamic that has been missing all year. While the staff is working hard to integrate the technology, it was clearly stated that having more students present would be preferable.

With that said, we are moving in that direction. I continue to review plans with the Health Department and our Nurse Coordinator. I will be sharing a plan with the Board of Education at their meeting on Monday, March 22, 2021 at 6:30 pm. The key is that we continue to implement our mitigation strategies with mask wearing being the most important of all. Together we will get back to normal. With your continued commitment, conviction, and consideration we will persevere.

When a new coronavirus outbreak emerged last week in Beijing, residents were jolted by reports that traces of the virus had been found on a cutting board used for imported salmon, and the backlash was swift. Within a few days, salmon was removed from major supermarket shelves in Beijing, reserves of the fish were dumped and bulk orders evaporated. Diners rushed to cancel reservations at Japanese restaurants in the capital, while salmon suppliers around the world scrambled to salvage the tarnished reputation of their prized product in the country. Chinese officials later said that imported salmon was not responsible for spreading the virus, but the damage had already been done. “The unluckiest restaurateur of 2020,” said Alan Wong, owner of Hatsune, a chain of Japanese restaurants in Beijing and Shanghai. “That’s my title.” “We were packed on Friday and now dead ever since,” he said. “Totally empty.” In a country where fears of the virus remain strong and nationalism is on the rise, imported salmon has found itself an easy target. Facing global criticism for its initial mishandling of the virus, Chinese authorities have for months waged a propaganda campaign to highlight their successes in taming the virus and deflect blame for the pandemic to outsiders. They have cast foreigners as public health risks, sowed doubt about the origins of the virus and even pushed an unfounded conspiracy theory that the United States military had deliberately brought the virus to China. After the chairman of the wholesale market linked to the latest outbreak told a Beijing News reporter that the virus had been found on a cutting board used for salmon, panic ensued. On Saturday, Zeng Guang, a senior epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was quoted in the Global Times, a party-controlled nationalist newspaper, urging the public to temporarily stay away from raw salmon. For years, China’s growing appetite for salmon, like American lobsters, oysters and cherries, had been celebrated as a sign of the country’s rising living standards and burgeoning middle class. Now, the luxury good, which is mostly imported from Norway and Chile, is being cast out. For the many salmon suppliers and restaurateurs who were already struggling to claw their way back in the aftermath of the pandemic, the sudden boycott in China has dealt an unexpected blow. Like many other restaurant owners in China, Mr. Wong of Hatsune was forced to close several of his fifteen restaurants after the epidemic exploded in the country in late January. The remaining restaurants were beginning to return to pre-pandemic levels of business earlier this month. Then reports began circulating last Friday about the contaminated cutting board, and the customers stopped coming. Halfway around the world, the reports also delivered a seismic shock. Regin Jacobsen, chief executive of Bakkafrost, a salmon farming company based in the Faroe Islands, said that calls from China to cancel orders began coming in over the weekend and soon they “practically went from 100 percent down to zero.” Over the last decade, Mr. Jacobsen said, the market for salmon in China had grown with the increase in Japanese restaurants and the expansion of a Chinese middle class interested in reaping salmon’s health benefits. Up to 20 percent of Bakkafrost’s fresh salmon exports, he said, went to China every year. After seeing the mounting cancellations, Bakkafrost rushed to respond, putting out a statement emphasizing that there had been no new cases of the coronavirus in the Faroe Islands since April and that the company’s employees had been regularly tested for the coronavirus. Anders Snellingen, manager of global operations for the Norwegian Seafood Council, an industry group, said that Norway’s seafood companies had also seen a rapid uptick in cancellations for salmon orders from China over the weekend and that several shipments of salmon had been destroyed or returned. “We hope this can be resolved quickly,” said Mr. Snellingen. “In the very short term we see there might be logistical challenges to getting seafood in via Beijing.” It is not the first time that Norwegian salmon has been made collateral damage in China. In 2010, the Nobel committee, which is based in Norway, awarded the Peace Prize to pro-democracy dissident Liu Xiaobo, angering the Chinese authorities. Beijing responded in part by slapping import controls on Norwegian salmon that were so strict that much of the fresh fish reportedly ended up rotting in Chinese warehouses. It took six years for Norway and China to normalize relations, and salmon sales began to recover. Last year, Norwegian salmon accounted for 45 percent of the market in China, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council. The total value of the country’s salmon exports to China last year reached $167 million and was growing, Mr. Snellingen said. The new outbreak, which has so far sickened more than 130 people in Beijing and forced the closure of workplaces, restaurants and hotels in high-risk areas of the city, comes at a delicate time for China’s leader Xi Jinping. Official data released this week showed that authorities are still struggling to rev up the country’s economy. Abroad, the ruling Communist Party faces a growing international backlash for its initial attempts to downplay the epidemic. “Given all of the effort they put into protecting Beijing, the fact that they let the virus slip through their formidable capital defenses is a bit of a blow to the Communist Party,” said Drew Thompson, director for China in the Pentagon from 2011 to 2018 and now a research fellow at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore. “Blaming this on foreign forces that got through their screen is a palatable option for them,” he added, calling the backlash against salmon a form of “xenopescophobia, the fear of foreign fish.” In Beijing, concerns have spread beyond salmon. One vendor at Jingshen market, which processes much of the city’s seafood, said in a telephone interview that he had seen sales of all seafood drop by 80 percent since Friday, though he was optimistic that demand would eventually rebound. In the last few days, state media and health officials have started to walk back their earlier statements about salmon. At a news briefing on Tuesday, Shi Guoqing, an official from the Chinese Center for Disease Control said that there was no evidence to suggest that salmon could host the new coronavirus. Officials, however, have not ruled out the possibility that the seafood products could have been contaminated during the packaging process. Updated June 16, 2020 I’ve heard about a treatment called dexamethasone. Does it work? The steroid, dexamethasone, is the first treatment shown to reduce mortality in severely ill patients, according to scientists in Britain. The drug appears to reduce inflammation caused by the immune system, protecting the tissues. In the study, dexamethasone reduced deaths of patients on ventilators by one-third, and deaths of patients on oxygen by one-fifth. What is pandemic paid leave? The coronavirus emergency relief package gives many American workers paid leave if they need to take time off because of the virus. It gives qualified workers two weeks of paid sick leave if they are ill, quarantined or seeking diagnosis or preventive care for coronavirus, or if they are caring for sick family members. It gives 12 weeks of paid leave to people caring for children whose schools are closed or whose child care provider is unavailable because of the coronavirus. It is the first time the United States has had widespread federally mandated paid leave, and includes people who don’t typically get such benefits, like part-time and gig economy workers. But the measure excludes at least half of private-sector workers, including those at the country’s largest employers, and gives small employers significant leeway to deny leave. Does asymptomatic transmission of Covid-19 happen? So far, the evidence seems to show it does. A widely cited paper published in April suggests that people are most infectious about two days before the onset of coronavirus symptoms and estimated that 44 percent of new infections were a result of transmission from people who were not yet showing symptoms. Recently, a top expert at the World Health Organization stated that transmission of the coronavirus by people who did not have symptoms was “very rare,” but she later walked back that statement. What’s the risk of catching coronavirus from a surface? Touching contaminated objects and then infecting ourselves with the germs is not typically how the virus spreads. But it can happen. A number of studies of flu, rhinovirus, coronavirus and other microbes have shown that respiratory illnesses, including the new coronavirus, can spread by touching contaminated surfaces, particularly in places like day care centers, offices and hospitals. But a long chain of events has to happen for the disease to spread that way. The best way to protect yourself from coronavirus — whether it’s surface transmission or close human contact — is still social distancing, washing your hands, not touching your face and wearing masks. How does blood type influence coronavirus? A study by European scientists is the first to document a strong statistical link between genetic variations and Covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. Having Type A blood was linked to a 50 percent increase in the likelihood that a patient would need to get oxygen or to go on a ventilator, according to the new study. How many people have lost their jobs due to coronavirus in the U.S.? The unemployment rate fell to 13.3 percent in May, the Labor Department said on June 5, an unexpected improvement in the nation’s job market as hiring rebounded faster than economists expected. Mass protests against police brutality that have brought thousands of people onto the streets in cities across America are raising the specter of new coronavirus outbreaks, prompting political leaders, physicians and public health experts to warn that the crowds could cause a surge in cases. While many political leaders affirmed the right of protesters to express themselves, they urged the demonstrators to wear face masks and maintain social distancing, both to protect themselves and to prevent further community spread of the virus. Some infectious disease experts were reassured by the fact that the protests were held outdoors, saying the open air settings could mitigate the risk of transmission. My state is reopening. Is it safe to go out? States are reopening bit by bit. This means that more public spaces are available for use and more and more businesses are being allowed to open again. The federal government is largely leaving the decision up to states, and some state leaders are leaving the decision up to local authorities. Even if you aren’t being told to stay at home, it’s still a good idea to limit trips outside and your interaction with other people. What are the symptoms of coronavirus? Common symptoms include fever, a dry cough, fatigue and difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. Some of these symptoms overlap with those of the flu, making detection difficult, but runny noses and stuffy sinuses are less common. The C.D.C. has also added chills, muscle pain, sore throat, headache and a new loss of the sense of taste or smell as symptoms to look out for. Most people fall ill five to seven days after exposure, but symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as many as 14 days. How can I protect myself while flying? If air travel is unavoidable, there are some steps you can take to protect yourself. Most important: Wash your hands often, and stop touching your face. If possible, choose a window seat. A study from Emory University found that during flu season, the safest place to sit on a plane is by a window, as people sitting in window seats had less contact with potentially sick people. Disinfect hard surfaces. When you get to your seat and your hands are clean, use disinfecting wipes to clean the hard surfaces at your seat like the head and arm rest, the seatbelt buckle, the remote, screen, seat back pocket and the tray table. If the seat is hard and nonporous or leather or pleather, you can wipe that down, too. (Using wipes on upholstered seats could lead to a wet seat and spreading of germs rather than killing them.) Should I wear a mask? The C.D.C. has recommended that all Americans wear cloth masks if they go out in public. This is a shift in federal guidance reflecting new concerns that the coronavirus is being spread by infected people who have no symptoms. Until now, the C.D.C., like the W.H.O., has advised that ordinary people don’t need to wear masks unless they are sick and coughing. Part of the reason was to preserve medical-grade masks for health care workers who desperately need them at a time when they are in continuously short supply. Masks don’t replace hand washing and social distancing. What should I do if I feel sick? If you’ve been exposed to the coronavirus or think you have, and have a fever or symptoms like a cough or difficulty breathing, call a doctor. They should give you advice on whether you should be tested, how to get tested, and how to seek medical treatment without potentially infecting or exposing others. Norwegian officials said on Wednesday that together with Chinese authorities, they had concluded that salmon from Norway was not the source of the coronavirus found on cutting boards at the Beijing market. “We can clear away uncertainty,” Odd Emil Ingebrigtsen, Norway’s fisheries and seafood minister, said during a video conference. Despite the official reassurances, many Chinese diners were still hesitant. Alyssa Mai, 19, a college student from Guangzhou, said that while she knew the risk of getting the virus from eating salmon was low, she would not have it any time soon. “My relatives would be worried,” she said. Some Chinese researchers and state media have zeroed in on a finding that the virus in the latest outbreak most closely resembles what they described as a “European strain.” They have cited it as the latest reason to question whether the virus originated from Wuhan. On Monday, the headline of a story in the Global Times read: “Source of Beijing cases renews speculation over Covid-19 origin.” Other experts said that the speculation over the virus strain was misleading. “It clearly emerged in Wuhan,” said Ben Cowling, a professor and head of the division of epidemiology and biostatistics at Hong Kong University’s School of Public Health. “In the media in China they are saying it’s a European strain but they haven’t clarified that it’s the virus that came from Wuhan and went to Europe and then came back again.” As Beijing reverts to a partial lockdown, many restaurateurs like Li Kuan are finding it harder to be optimistic about the future. Mr. Li had been forced to suspend business at his 30-seat, high-end Japanese restaurant during the height of the epidemic but bookings quickly bounced back in May as restrictions were lifted. But since Friday, the intimate, earth-toned restaurant in eastern Beijing has been nearly empty. Mr. Li said he was reluctant to close the restaurant because he didn’t want to give in to the misinformation. But, he was struggling to stay afloat — he had already sent half of his staff home and was sitting on a rapidly expiring stock of fresh tuna and salmon flown in from Japan. “I’ve been a chef for so many years, I can’t just give up now,” Mr. Li said. “But right now the problem I’m thinking about is just: when is this going to end?” Bella Huang contributed reporting from Hong Kong.
