Do you think it's a good idea to try and get away from Google Docs when it comes to writing? I really can't afford any other fancy program to write my drafts in, and it honestly seems like the easiest - not to mention, most convenient - program to use to share my manuscript with beta readers. I could use advice on this matter because I keep seeing things across the net about it being a bad place to work on writing, but I have no idea what to turn to to make things easy for me and my future beta readers.
This is such a good question. Thank you.
So, a little backstory. Ever since Google removed their motto "do no evil" they have gone down the rather predictable path of all big players of the rot economy: putting profits over user experience.
A little while back, there was rumor that Google trains AI with the content of google docs, then they said they don't really, they only scan the content and do nothing with it, and then they started blocking access to documents with sexy images. Do we believe that Google has our own best interest at heart? That's something everyone has to decide for themselves.
Back then, I made a post with alternatives for Google Docs, you can find it here, also check the reblogs for more options:
Now, is it a good idea to switch from google docs? I think it is, but I'm also not consistent with it. As you mentioned, it seems to be the easiest to share writing with beta readers, and I also still often use it for fanfiction.
But there are alternatives, and they require very little adjustment in the process. Let me give you two free options.
Ellipsus is webbased, meaning you can write in it in the browser on any device. They have sharing, specifically for beta reading, and an export function for AO3.
Reedsy (marketplace around everything self-publishing) has an editor. It is webbased, and they also have an option for sharing with beta readers. This software is aimed at book type-setting and exporting but it works just fine for copying to web.
Personally, I'm currently switching everything to LibreOffice (also free!) files in some cloud connected folder. I used to do a lot of mobile writing on my phone with a bluetooth keyboard but currently, I'm taking my laptop everywhere so LibreOffice works great for me. If I have to use my phone or tablet for some lightweight mobile writing, on vacation for instance, I can still use something webbased.
So, I hope I gave you some interesting options. Do I think it's a good idea to make us less dependent on Google? Yes, I do. I don't trust them.
We have alternatives, and they cost us nothing more than a little adjustment.

The Best Book Editing Software is your path to polished writing Â
Editing is the unsung hero of the writing world. Itâs where the magic happens, where rough drafts transform into polished manuscripts. But whatâs the secret behind perfect editing? The answer lies in the right tools, and in this blog post, we will guide you through the world of the Best book editing software.Â
The Importance of EditingÂ
Editing is crucial for any writer. Editing isnât just about fixing typos and grammar errors; itâs about shaping your content into a compelling narrative. Here are some reasons why effective editing matters:Â
Clarity and Coherence: Editing ensures that your ideas flow logically and coherently. It helps you eliminate confusing or complex sentences, making your text easier to understand.Â
Style and Consistency: Consistency in style is essential for maintaining your readersâ engagement. Editing helps you ensure that your writing maintains a uniform tone and style.Â
Error-Free Writing: Spelling and grammar mistakes can distract readers from your message. The best book editing software catches these errors, saving you from embarrassing slip-ups.Â
Professionalism: Well-edited content reflects professionalism and attention to detail. Whether writing a novel or a blog post, polished writing enhances your credibility.Â
Exploring the tools of ManuscriptsÂ
Manuscripts is the best book editing software. By using Manuscripts, you become a better writer. The following are the best tools offered by Manuscripts:Â
Paraphrase ReportÂ
By paraphrasing, you improve the messageâs clarity and impact. In this tool, you select a sentence or paragraph you want to paraphrase. In the reportâs result screen, you will see various options, including ideas for the chosen line or paragraph. The report will paraphrase your suggestions. Paraphrasing helps you confirm that you understand a piece of writing by showing familiarity with it, particularly its more complex nuances and connections between its central themes.Â
Third Person PerspectiveÂ
If you have written your book from a first-person perspective and want to change to a third-person perspective, this tool is handy for you. Manuscripts recognise that the narrator is not speaking directly to the reader but is instead narrating the story from an outside perspective. Highlight the text you want to convert, and the converted text will appear on the right side.Â
Stylometry ReportÂ
This tool analyses your writing style using statistical methods. Use this tool to compare your book or a writing piece to some of the most well-known novels. You choose the genre and book that most closely match your preferences. That will provide a valid comparison. You will be assisted in enhancing the context and style of the book.Â
Sentiment Analysis ReportÂ
This report determines the emotional undertone of a body of text. This report displays the sentiment of sentences to help individuals understand the emotions represented in the texts. You can use this report to change your text readability based on the reportâs recommendations. It will make it easier for readers to understand the bookâs mood and meaning.Â
Reading Pace ReportÂ
In this report, you get to know the reading speed for each paragraph. The outcomes are displayed on the right side of the screen. You can select one count at a time, and the report will highlight the relevant paragraph in the paper or book. It is helpful to look into how long it takes to read a book.Â
ConclusionÂ
Editing is a bridge between your creative ideas and the readerâs experience. Choosing the best book editing software is essential to make that bridge solid and reliable. Manuscriptsâ tools has the potential to elevate your writing to new heights. Remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The best book writing software for you depends on your specific writing goals and preferences. Manuscripts is your path to polished writing.Â

I'm in trouble đȘŠđđ”đž
there is something important that we should take care of together.

Ihya Company
After deep reflection and great effort in light of the genocide, we are a youth team, I decided to establish a non-profit collective company aimed at:
1 . Bringing young people with high efficiency in software development and maintaining the remaining experience and training them for freeđšâđ»đ±
2 . Bringing young men and girls with the best in design and editing, training them and providing electricity for training for free as wellđ©âđ»đšâđ»
3 . Providing good Internet for a solution for exams for the benefit of students who could not provide good Internet since any place where you will use the Internet will need a very high cost đ¶
4 . Stationery and books are provided to students who are unable to buy these things.đ

For that :
We need to save money to start the project on Monday in two days
Revival is based on your donations to start what we planned for, so we need to reach $2,000 as soon as possible. The revival campaign received $392.
Company's private donation campaign (ihyaa).
Note that if Monday comes and we don't collect the amount we will pay to rent the place, at least we will leave everything we started because of the lack of money and the amount is very small, which is $2,000, including office rent, electricity and water. Note that the appointment is today and it is on Saturday, but the owner of the place gave me another chance that he can't start the initiative

Zero's Fic Binding - Sixpence In His Shoe

Sixpence In His Shoe by scifigrl47 [@scifigrl47]
Fandom: Marvel (Comics) Ship: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark Start Date: 02/05/24 End Date: 01/21/25 Pages: 253
I am, honestly, probably the most proud of this cover. This might be the most detailed, delicate, intricate thing Iâve made - ever. I know I havenât been doing this long, but this? This is really good.
The amount of layers in this bitch is astounding. Sometimes I yearn for the embrace of a better graphic software then Canva. Weâll get there. Anyway.

There is an Owlcrate special edition of The Longest Autumn that inspired the shit out of me for this, along with the version of The Fine Print that i saw in Target that was this beautiful lined foil design. The idea of a mirrored, hyper intricate lace-like cover that wove all the individual parts of the story together drove me crazy.Â
The vinyl is foil - which, if you are new to HTV and want to use it to make book covers, LISTEN: This foil sucks. All foil HTV sucks. Itâs going to suck to cut. Itâs going to REALLY suck to iron on. It will be worth it, but itâs going to try and drag your soul out of your body by your fingernails the entire time youâre using it.

Alright, lets talk about the process and the typeset.Â

The entire theme of this fic is marriage - in both that the characters got married, are having a wedding, and are desperately in love with each other despite not actually telling each other that before said marriage and wedding. I initially was going to do a blue and white theme, more along the lines of really flowery modern wedding invitations - but then I read the fic again.
I forgot about the first chapter. Reading again, I paid more attention to what everyone around them was doing to celebrate marriage being legal. The process of it. The traditional feel of how it was done. And thatâs the hook that I followed instead.Â

Sixpence doesn't have chapter names - so instead I pulled some of the wedding traditions that I researched and used those as my chapter foundations.

Each chapter gets one, where I use the motif as the header and the scene breaks in the chapter. I also added the iconography to the chapter numbers in the header.

I made three of these in total. I fought this book every step of the way - I really needed to be a more experienced version of me to make this book the way I wanted to, but honestly? I literary did the best I could, and even I can tell that I did it.

The first copy of this book went to Sci - Its got a little extra character from being the first version, but out of the three sisters I made of this print run, she turned out the best looking. I'm keeping the most fucked up version (which is otherwise perfect, really, save for the fact that I put the FUCKING SPINE ON BACKWARDS), while the littlest sister is going to go to one of my best friends for a VERY belated gift.

This was a surprised gift for Sci - who had reached out to me almost 4 months ago and asked if they could maybe, possibly, have a copy of Maybe Tomorrow. I knew immediately that I wanted to make this for her too; I had the typeset in my Want To Make file since FEBRUARY OF 2024. So I dusted it off, dumped my other project to the side, and hyper focused on this book for about a month and a half.Â
Sci - I admire the fuck out of you. You are a gift and a treasure, and I hope you are ok with me getting my little racoon hands on your fics. Thank you for being open to my interpretation of your work. Itâs a privilege and an honor to bind them.
If by some miracle, you have not had the pleasure of reading Sixpence In His Shoe - or any of Sciâs work, #1 what the fuck, #2 please start here.

Tested to be mobile friendly but that may vary by device. Contains a page for guidelines, a dossier with tabs, a biography page, a verse page with tabs, a headcanon page, a mains/affiliates page, a page for links and navigation, and a visual gallery for your muse. If you have any issues or questions about editing the carrds, you are more than welcome to ask me here on my tumblr and I will try my best to help you!

⧠Price: $6 for early access , these will be FREE / pay what you want on July 21st. If you want to help a girl out with a tip, I'd greatly appreciate it đ ( Important Note! This template requires Pro Lite or higher to use due to the number of features included ! )
ă NATASHA DEMO ⧠NATASHA DOWNLOAD ă ââ RED ă YELENA DEMO ⧠YELENA DOWNLOAD ă ââ BLUE ă GRAPHICS DOWNLOAD ă
Instructions on how to edit the password graphic below the cut (it's simple, I promise).
If you want to use custom colors on the template and want the password animation to match, you need to download the file "password customization.psd" from the google drive linked above (graphics download) and open it in an editing software. For the sake of ease and accessibility, I'm using photopea for this, which is a free editing program that can be accessed entirely online.
1. First, open the file. It will looked jumbled in the preview; this is okay, it's meant to look like that, and the animation will display correctly when it's saved as a .gif file.
2. To change the colors, all you have to do is change the "color overlay" on the layer folders to your preferred colors. To do this, right-click on each folder that has "effects" attached to them. You'll have to do them individually but there are only four of them. Click the option that says "Blending Options" and you should see the following box pop up.
3. Click on the setting that says "color overlay". Change the color in the box indicated below to whatever color you want. Do this for all four folders. Then click on the layer that say "BACKGROUND COLOR" and fill that with whatever color you want the background to be. It needs to match the one you intend to use for your carrd or it won't be seamless.
4. When you're satisfied with the colors, all that's left is for you to save the gif. Click file > export as > .gif. BUT in order for the animation to play as intended, you have to save it with a specific setting change. Most of the time, when you go to save a gif, it sets the "repeat" factor to 0, meaning the gif will play on loop continuously. We don't want that. So we're going to set the "repeat" factor to 1, that way the gif will play only once when the card is opened.
And that's all you have to do! The gif should be good to go, just insert it on the carrd in the first image box. If you have trouble editing it on your own for whatever reason, I'd also be happy to do it for you. If you would rather not use the fake gif loading screen, you can just delete that element entirely. But you also need to delete the blue section divider beneath it that says "main", that way links to your carrd will go directly to the menu instead of the fake loading screen.
Enjoy ! đ©·

What gifts to buy for each Venus sign
Christmas is among us, my favourite season and time of the year. Venus is the planet of love, by nature it can display what we like to receive from others but if you donât know their Venus or the house itâs in you can try to look at the persons Sun sign instead but Venus is ideal.
A gift based on their:
Sun sign will make them feel seen and like you know them well, it will be a gift they may appreciate

How to knit a Six of Crows blanket!
Hi my darlings, after posting quite a bit about my Grishaverse knitting projects Iâve had a few people ask if I have any kind of pattern or instructions for the Six of Crows blanket I made. I completely drew it myself and (as someone who has never designed a real pattern) figured it out as I went but I thought Iâd do my best to put together a step-by-step guide of what I did for my one so you can try it if youâd like to! If you do this and share it anywhere then if you could please credit me for the design that would awesome <3
My finished blanket is approximately 117x120 cm, or 46x47 inches, and it looks like this:

Yarn I used: so sorry I canât remember and I donât have the information right now but if anyone wants me to I can update this when I find it; I know that it was bulky weight though
Needle size I used: 9mm
Stitches you need to know how to do: Knit and Purl
Other techniques youâll need to know: the fair isle method for colourwork, and possibly how to back a blanket but I will explain that in more detail because I had to learn how to do it for this project
Tags: @marielaure @spike-is-not-a-dogs-name @scenemime @worth-this-and-more @wisegirl29 @atac-agent @uttermywish @feralipadkid @fairytalesofforever
Guide below the cut!!
Step 1: the first thing you need is a chart, because this is knit in fair isle. Iâm sure there are proper softwares for designing fair isle charts but I uploaded a photo of the six of crows book cover onto a free drawing app called Ibis Paint X, went over it in flat colours to create a more 2D design, superimposed a grid over the top, and then went round every individual square of that grid and edited the image so that there was one colour in each square (ie, pixelated it). The fun thing about doing it like this is that you can easily change it to be whatever size you want by changing the size of your grid (each square represents one stitch). As I mentioned before, if you use the same yarn as I did and the exact same chart as I did it comes out to be around 117x120 cm or 46x47 inches; itâs pretty square and smaller than your average blanket, which is perfect for what I wanted but might not be perfect for what you want so you might want to adapt that if youâd rather a different size. This is what my chart looked like:

Step 2: casting on and knitting! This is the most fun bit, in my opinion. My grid is 103 stitches wide so and I wanted to have a border all around the edges so the first thing I did was cast on a full row in the cream yarn that I wanted to make that border from, with two more stitches
1) Cast on 105 of cream yarn. This should be the number of stitches across the x-axis of your pattern plus 2, to create a border either side. This cast on row will then create a one row border at the bottom of your work.
2) K1 in cream, knit first row of pattern, K1 in cream
3) P1 in cream, purl second row of pattern, P1 in cream
4) repeat steps 2) and 3) until the pattern is complete
5) complete an entire row in cream yarn
6) cast off - this is always so exciting!!! This is when you get the first real sense of accomplishment, in my opinion
I donât have loads of progress photos, Iâm afraid, but this is what mine looked like when I first cast off:

(The edges are curled here so you canât see the border on the sides, but it is there, also the lighting is rubbish sorry)
Step 3: Weave in all the ends. Gonna be super honest this step is deeply boring but incredibly important; there are a lot of ends to deal with here. Sorry I donât have a photo of the wrong side of my work but if you imagine at least one loose end for every section of colour change you can gather that itâs a lot haha
Step 4: Backing!! Now there can be different methods of backing depending on what kind of fabric you choose, I canât actually tell you what kind of fabric I used other than that the colour was called âluna greyâ because the label didnât actually say what it was so I just decided to go for it. I could only buy it in metres or half metres so I had to get 150cm and then trim the excess. Remember to cut your backing fabric larger than your knitting!! - you need lenience to sew it in. I chose a soft fabric that wasnât very stretchy. If you get a stretchier fabric you might want to use something to band the knitting first so that you avoid pulling it out of shape.
Lay the right sides of your two pieces (fabric & knitting) together and securely pin three sides.
Once your right sides are pinned together you can go all around your three pinned edges and sew together. Sewing is not my forte so if it isnât yours either donât worry, whatâs good about this is that your stitches wonât actually be seen once the projectâs done so donât worry too much if they arenât super neat. I used a running stitch and caught the underside of the knitting without going all the way through so that I knew my stitches wouldnât be visible. If you want to add extra security, you can go round this sewing section twice. I personally hand sewed this, I think you could use a machine if you wanted to but be careful that the knitting doesnât catch.
This is an exciting bit because you can really start to see the finished project
Once youâve sewn your first three sides what you essentially have is a giant inside out pocket, and you can turn it right side out so it looks something like this:

Sorry itâs not a great photo.
After this I trimmed off the excess fabric and just sat and stretched everything out to make sure it was sitting properly and I was happy with it. If youâre also trimming off excess fabric, remember to leave the same amount of lenience (I did about five centimetres/two inches) as you did for the original edges!!
Then fold your lenience fabric inside the pocket and pin it nice and securely. I used a YouTube video to learn an invisible stitch to close this edge and it worked really well once Iâd gotten the trick of it, I was really pleased. I practiced it on the excess fabric is cut off first and I definitely recommend that, it was really helpful
And then thatâs it!!!
Here is my finished project again:

I am so overjoyed with how this came out!
I hope that this guide was somewhat helpful, though I realise itâs clear that I donât write patterns and am probably not very good at describing what I did so Iâm sorry if anything was unclear. If you try this let me know, and if you share it anywhere please credit me! đ€đ€

Writing Notes: Cookbook

Whether you want to turn your own recipes into a cookbook as a family keepsake, or work with a publisher to get the most viral recipes from your blog onto paper and into bookstores, making a cookbook is often a fun but work-intensive process.
How to Make a Cookbook
The process of making a cookbook will depend on your publishing route, but in general youâll need to work through the following steps:
Concept: The first step of making a cookbook is to figure out what kind of cookbook this will be. Your cookbook can focus on a single ingredient, meal, region, or culture. It can be an educational tome for beginners, or a slapdash collection of family favorites for your relatives. If youâre looking to get your cookbook published, a book proposal is a necessary step towards getting a book deal, and can also help you pin down your concept.
Compile recipes: If youâve been dreaming of writing a cookbook, chances are you probably already know some recipes that have to be included. Make a list of those important recipes and use that as a jumping-off point to brainstorm how your cookbook will be organized and what other recipes need to be developed. If youâre compiling a community cookbook, reach out to your community members and assemble their recipes.
Outline: Based on your guiding concept and key recipes, make a rough table of contents. Possibly the most common way to divide a cookbook is into meals (appetizers, breakfast, lunch, dinner) but cookbooks can also be divided by season, raw ingredients (vegetables, fish, beef), cooking techniques, or some other narrative structure.
Recipe development: Flesh out your structure by developing beyond your core recipes, if needed, and fine-tuning those recipes which need a bit more work.
Recipe testing: Hire recipe testers, or enlist your friends and family, to test out your recipes in their home kitchens. Have them let you know what worked and didnât work, or what was confusing.
Write the surrounding material: Most cookbooks include some writing other than the recipes. This may include chapter introductions and blurbs for each recipe.
Photography and layout: If your book includes photography, at some point there will be photo shoots where the food will have to be prepared and styled for camera. Traditional publishing houses will likely want to hire stylists and photographers who specialize in food photography. Once the images and text are both ready, a book designer will arrange them together and make the cover design, but you can also make your own cookbook design using software like InDesign or old-school DIY-style, with paper, scissors, and a photocopier.
Editing: If youâre working with a publisher, there may be several rounds of back and forth as your editor works with you to fine-tune the recipes and text. The book will then be sent to a copy editor who will go through the entire cookbook looking for grammar and style issues, and indexer for finishing touches. If youâre self-publishing, give a rough draft of your book to friends and family members to proofread.
Printing: After everything is laid out and approved, your cookbook is ready to be printed. If youâre printing your cookbook yourself, you can go to a copy shop to get it spiral bound, or send it off to a printer for more options.
Common Types of Cookbooks
More so than any other kind of nonfiction book, cookbooks lend themselves to self-publishing. Of course, cookbook publishing is also a huge industry, and a professional publisher might be the best route for your book depending on the scope and your reach as a chef.
Self-published: This is a cookbook made of up your own recipes, which you might give as gifts to family and friends. You can easily self-publish a cookbook online as an individual. But if having a print book is important to you, there are many options. You can print and staple together a short cookbook, zine-style. Many copy shops will also offer options for wire-bound cookbooks, and there are resources online that will print bookstore-quality softcover or hard-cover books for a fee.
Community cookbooks:Â A special subset of self-published cookbook made up of recipes from multiple individuals, usually to raise money for a cause or organization. Working with a group has the advantage of a large pool of recipes and testers, and is a great way to share your recipes with a larger audience while also supporting a cause you believe in.
Through a publishing house: If you think your cookbook has a wider audience, you may want to seek out a mainstream publishing house. Get a literary agent who can to publishers who can connect you with publishers who are interested in your cookbook. Large publishing houses donât usually accept pitches from individuals, but you can reach out to small, local publishers without an agent as intermediary. To publish a cookbook through a publishing house, youâll typically need a book proposal outlining your concept, audience, and budget.
Things to Consider Before Making a Cookbook
Before embarking on your cookbook project, itâs a good idea to get organized, and to figure out what kind of cookbook you want to make.
Photography: More so than other texts, cookbooks often include visual accompaniment. Beautiful pages of full-color photos are expensive, which is one reason publishers like to work with bloggers who can style and photograph their own food. Not all cookbooks need photos, however. Some of the most iconic cookbooks rely on illustrations, or words alone. Figure out what role, if any, visuals will play in your book.
Audience: Are you turning recipe cards into a keepsake family cookbook, or selling this cookbook nationwide? Your intended audience will greatly influence how you write and publish your cookbook, whether itâs vegans, college students, or owners of pressure cookers. Youâll need to consider your audienceâs cooking skill level, desires, and where they buy their food.
Budget: Once you have a vision for what you want your cookbook to be, budget your time and resources. Do you need help to make this book? The answer is probably yes. Assemble a team of people who understand your vision and know what kind of commitment will be involved.

Manuscripts is your path to polished writing.Â

my occupations in my better cr <3

inspired by a post from @astrono-mi <3
Youtuber
I've been making little videos off and on since i was eight. i technically made my youtube debut when i was nine, when i snuck onto the family computer to create a channel called "jelsaforeva13", where i would post barbie videos i shot on my little pink kindle fire. i forgot about the channel until i turned sixteen and revisited it. watching those made me remember how much fun it was to make silly little videos, so i hopped back onto the youtuber bandwagon after years of veering away from the career path. i got a proper gaming set up, editing software and a headset for my birthday that year, so I made a new channel called "thought daughter" to start posting fnaf gameplays. i maybe got 20-60 views per video, but as i got older it evolved into play-throughs, vlogs, dance covers, video essays and book reviews, and my versatility got me quite a bit more attention. my channel quickly grew, and now, at twenty years old, i've just hit five million subscribers.
Dancer & Choreographer
I've been dancing pretty much since i came outta the womb. growing up watching "dancing with the stars", "dance moms" and any other dance-related show i could get my hands on had a big impact on me. i was in ballet and ballroom classes from ages five to thirteen, excelling in both, until i discovered k-pop. the music genre introduced a whole new kind of dance to me; choreography. i joined a kpop dance class at fourteen and never looked back. now, i'm considered one of the most skilled dancers in america. as i get older, i'll even get to work with groups like Katseye, Stray Kids, Aespa and Meovv as a choreographer.
Novelist
writing has always been one of my biggest passions in life, rivaled only by dance. i started out writing fanfiction, the first of which being a shitty knock off of "the lion, the witch and the wardrobe" by c.s. lewis when i was six, and quickly followed by a megamind fanfiction. over the course of my preteen years i wrote about voltron, star wars rebels, roblox youtube group "the pals", and peter pan from "once upon a time". as i entered highschool, i got very into "criminal minds" and wrote an x reader about emily prentiss on wattpad, which garnered a shit ton of attention and it wound up being one of the most well known fanfics in the fandom. now as an adult, i'm working on my very first original book; "deerpeople", a southern gothic sapphic horror novel set in the mid 1970s. this will become my magnum opus, as i'll publish it at the age of 21 and become a bestselling author by 22.
Screenwriter & Director
as i get older and more mature and solidified in my identity and my career, i go from the influencer awards to the oscars. my first novel "deerpeople" was made into a movie in technicolor produced by A24, co-directed by myself and Rose Glass, starring Mia Goth and Kristen Stewart. at the age of 24 i end up winning both "best original screenplay" from the writer's guild of america and an oscar for both directing and writing the movie. my career only skyrockets from there, and i make countless more movies and novels, though i lean more into the film industry as i get older instead of being a novelist. i even give lectures in film schools from my thirties on. throughout the course of my life as a director and screenwriter, i become known as one of the greatest screenwriters in hollywood history. i die a legend.
Wife & Mother
i meet my wife Sierra the day after i wake up in my better cr for the first time. she's the girl next door, the loudest, weirdest girl in the world, and i quickly fall deeply for her. we're married on October 1st, 2027 on Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. on that same beach, we eventually have our dream beach house built a year later. we happily spend the first decade of our marriage child free, myself focusing on my writing and commuting back and forth from California to South Carolina, and Sierra focusing on the sapphic punk rock band she's building as the lead vocalist. in our late thirties, after deciding to both take a long break from our work, we adopt a fourteen year old girl named Eden and a ten year old boy named Matteo. Eden is a very strong willed, funny, confident, scarily intelligent young girl and she ends up skipping a few grades and earning a scholarship into Yale at the age of seventeen. she becomes a screenwriter and director, just like me. Matteo is bright and giggly and creative and genteel, opting to skip college and become an artist. me and Sierra live out the rest of our lives in our beach house right on the shoreline of Myrtle Beach, staying near our families and our babies instead of moving out to hollywood. we live happily ever after <3

going on the twine rant again, lads. fair warning.
-
the twine editor is theoretically great software
which is to say, twine editor is far and away the best execution of "a text game maker for people who mostly make text and not games" that presently exists. it's notable for making wholly self-contained (read: does not require interpreter software) text games with functioning mechanics at about the level of code literacy you could feasibly ask from people who brushed off of other more complicated software
this is in large part because the text adventure and IF ecosystem has the same problem as the (similarly insular and incestuous) scorewriting ecosystem: all of the software is made to be used by a group of like 50 people who don't use anything else, so they just settle for whatever exists
twine solves a lot of these problems by simply existing as an html game maker that can automate all of the functions of a gamebook out of the box. the editor has features which (to me) seem to be inspired by scrivener, which is my favourite WYSIWYG writing software for longform fiction on the market (I prefer writing in LaTeX but I can acknowledge that's a habit I picked up and not an endorsement of LaTeX)
that being said, even though there's an obvious utility to being able to prototype out rpgs and such in twine incredibly quickly, I can't really recommend people... use twine for that. because of the problems.
the twine editor is also kind of beautiful for all the ways in which it issoftware designed to torture the user
twine exists with one foot in "games" and one foot in "writing" and this overlap is the totality of its intended use. this space of compromise is still the best that's been made for this specific scene, but it means that edge cases are (at absolute best) operating twine in much the way that someone being hanging onto the edge of a shattered cockpit is operating an airliner
I could go on and on about the specific elements of twine's design that drive me insane, and in how it punishes you both for making too much of a book and for making too much of a game, but there's one problem that kind of sticks out as a simulacrum of this whole issue
by design, twine organises its projects as a story map. this is kind of like the middle point between scrivener's storyboard and a whiteboard, but specialised for use in making text games. this means that each node on it is one screen, called a card, that you can open and edit
doing this opens a window for text input, and the exact contents of this window kind of depend on which format you're writing your story in, but as a rule, you write everything into these sub-windows and that's the game
because twine runs in one window, these cards open more like menus than true windows. you can have one open at a time, and when you need to test something, you close the window and press the button to test the game. simple as
now, for making software, it's helpful to have a versioning function of some sort in case, among other reasons, you fuck something up in a way you don't immediately notice
for writing, you usually want some sort of undo function, in case you accidentally delete something or edit over it
at the intersection of these two, twine does have an undo function. which works differently depending on which version of the editor you're using. in the web version, you get multiple layers of undo. that makes sense.
in the downloaded version, which is the version you have to use if you don't want to use your browser's local storage (?? you shouldn't be doing this) you get
one layer of undo.
in a modern text editor.
that you are expected to write in.
this is on top of the browser-hosted version of twine editor being significantly more stable than the desktop version, so that's obviously the version you're meant to use, which runs in stark contrast to like... how that should work. this should already be raising your blood pressure a little bit if you remember that the browser version of twine saves your project files to your browser's local storage
now, common to both versions is another important feature which seemingly exists to prevent data loss: twine automatically saves your changes when you exit out of a card
this means that, the moment you close a card to go test the changes you just made to your game, they are saved over the previous version of the game with no way to undo them
but there IS a way to get around this without having to write in an entirely separate word processor! several ways even. you can even use the downloaded version if you do this
duplicate the full project every single time you make changes that could necessitate an undo function
make a copy of every card you edit in case you need to revert to it after testing, then remember to delete it afterwards
if you're editing the cards themselves, see option 1, because there is no way to undo deletion of cards in the story map
and like... that's not good. it's kind of the hell machine for killing all human beings, actually
it's also not a problem remotely unique to twine, because this is the kind of thing you see in most niche-specialised software where there isn't really a distinction made between "this is an expected frustration of working on any artistic project" and "this is something completely insane that absolutely should not be the case and isn't tolerated in immediately adjacent comparable creative fields"
twine can be used to make longer projects, but at the point where you're recommending two layers of supporting software that overlap so hard with the editor that they should be redundancies, it becomes clear that the only thing it's really fit-for-purpose to do is non-linear fiction consisting of two or three paragraphs per card
and that's generally not what it's used for! because that sort of thing is almost universally understood as a stepping stone towards using twine for making either longform non-linear fiction or full-featured rpgs
twine could be really useful software, and in fairness it's generally better than the alternatives it supplanted in its niche (people making little interactive poems probably shouldn't be trying to use Inform or TADS), but it really seems like it was designed with as a cursed amulet meant to cause as much grief as possible while being difficult to justify throwing away
