Almost for the first time there mingled with her thought of him an itch of curiosity—to know something about him that perhaps he did not mean for her to know.

The Secret Garden (the film, not read the book yet) is like L.M. Montgomery meets the Bronte sisters. Wuthering Heights setting, but the garden is very LMM. Lord Craven, a less ugly Rochester, with a feature of Maxim de Winter in the form of a dead wife, is like those fathers from LMM's books who do a sudden 180 when they remember they're supposed to be dads. The night ritual that the children carry out that brings Lord Craven back home is like when Jane Eyre thought she heard Rochester's voice calling to her. And Mrs Medlock is just a very stressed out housekeeper.

which series should i do? (description below)
1: . The House Always Wins
Rafe runs an illegal poker game in the back of a shitty dive bar.
You’re the bartender.
You watch the way he smokes through his winnings like money isn’t real. The way he flirts with every girl but never takes them home.
Then one night, he bets too much.
And when he loses?
You’re the prize.
Now you’re trapped in a high-stakes world of gambling, crime, and Rafe Cameron’s hands on your waist, whispering that he’ll get you out of this.
But deep down, you know—the house always wins.
2: Trophy Wife AU (based off the movie Swallow) You’re the perfect wife—soft-spoken, beautiful, always put-together. You live in a stunning house with expensive furniture, married to Rafe, a wealthy and powerful man who treats you like a delicate possession.
But something is off. Rafe is too controlling—picking your clothes, your meals, your schedule. You start feeling like a doll in a glass box.
To cope, you develop an unsettling habit—maybe it’s swallowing objects like in Swallow, maybe it’s self-sabotaging in small ways just to feel something.
Rafe notices, and instead of stopping you, he becomes obsessed—watching, studying, pushing you further, fascinated by the fragility of his perfect little wife.
3: The Bluebeard AU (The Wife-Killer’s Secret)
You’re Rafe Cameron’s new wife, whisked away to his grand estate, dressed in silk and diamonds.
He gives you one rule—never open the locked door at the end of the hall.
But late at night, curiosity gets the best of you. You push open the door. And inside? The bodies of his past wives, preserved in glass like broken dolls.
When Rafe finds out what you’ve done, he doesn’t get angry. He just smiles.
“I was hoping you’d be smarter than them,” he says, tilting your chin up. “I guess I was wrong.”
4: The Trophy Wife AU (Inspired by Swallow)
You’re the perfect wife—soft-spoken, beautiful, always put-together.
5: Loser!CEO!Rafe x Bombshell!Ditzy!Model!Reader
Rafe’s the kind of guy who inherited the family business but still can’t figure out how to flirt with a woman without quoting Forbes. He’s rich, sure, but he’s such a loser about it. Glasses slipping down his nose, nervously adjusting his tie when you walk in the room, always dropping his pen when you bend over in that tiny dress.
Everyone thinks you’re just the hot dumb model he keeps around as a PR stunt — arm candy for events, a silly little trophy. And you let them think that. You lean into the airhead thing, giggle at all the wrong moments, make pouty faces when people talk finance.
But Rafe? He knows. He watches you like a man starving. He’s so pathetically obsessed — has a shrine-level stash of your magazine covers in his office, jerks off to your perfume ads, and absolutely melts whenever you call him “sir” in that breathy, teasing voice.
In public:
“Y-Yeah, uh, this is my…uhm, my girlfriend. She models. For stuff. Fashion stuff.”
You just smile and hang off his arm, blowing kisses and whispering dumb things in his ear like “do you think my boobs looked too big in that dress?”
In private:
He pins you to the bed with his hand around your throat and his mouth tight against your ear.
“Say it again. Say you’re just my dumb little toy. Say you’re nothing unless I tell you what to do.”
You’re drooling and shaking and gasping out “yes, sir” while he ruins you for hours, biting down on your shoulder and praising you like you’re the only thing that keeps him alive.
He gets so mean in bed — cruel with how good he is at finding your weak spots, but so desperately in love it’s pathetic. Like finishing on your face and then immediately wiping it off with trembling hands like, “you okay? Did I hurt you? You’re so pretty. God, I’m so lucky.”
He has no rizz until you’re naked. Then it’s like he’s possessed.

the magnus archives is a romcom—no what the hell it's not. it is, however, a gothic horror romance between jon and elias. because you see, the thing about jonelias is that their canonical dynamic is built around an absurd number of gothic genre tropes. jon sims obviously fits the mold of the tortured gothic protagonist quite nicely who's facing both external (the other avatars targeting him) and internal horrors (his progress as the Archivist weighing on his conscience). but he's also trapped in the gothic manor which is the magnus institute. there are secrets (the place being a temple to the eye), locked doors, forbidden chambers, and bodies in the attic which serve as evidence of past misdeeds (the panopticon; gertrude and jonah's bodies in the tunnels), the institute/archives is ultimately destroyed by fire - purging the gothic manor i.e. the symbolic destruction of the previous order with fire is a common motif in the genre. and jon's work in the archives is haunted by the figurative ghost of gertrude who remains a curious mystery he must unravel and will serve as a constant reminder to jon of his own inadequacies (just like du maurier's rebecca fr)
elias is then —
1) his personal bluebeard figure who murdered his predecessor, a comparison which only gets stronger with the jonah magnus reveal since he's been cycling through archivists for two hundred years, all having met gruesome ends in service to him and jon being his final and most notable choice. are you seeing the maxim de winter rochester imagery. are you.
2) his gothic double. doubles as a literary trope are your hidden self made manifest, the horror lies in the double (elias) revealing the gothic protagonist's (jon) hidden, true self to them. elias as an avatar of the eye is entirely unrepentant for his nature, he revels in it. which is a mirror to jon's own self-flagellation because despite how much he feels torn about his own metaphorical vampirism, he likes it. he admits as much to gerry as early as s3 when asked about his feelings on his ability to compel truths. and why wouldn't he! after being kept in the dark so long, why wouldn't he like it? and jon and jonah had in common their natural curiosity even before they found the beholding. elias is a mirror and jon looks in it and sees someone who is him, but not quite. someone who is what jon would be if he could simply let go, but jon can't. like most gothic protagonists he will kill his double because it is a reminder of a self-truth he can never escape.
and watcher's call. like what even is that. what do you mean that's a thing. what. literally wuthering heights. "why did you heed the call?" // "because this is the place i know i should be" <- normal dialogue to write for two guys definitely not starring in a gothic romance.

^ same genre of images. so the spider, the mother of puppets, the web which is the symbolic representation of narrative thread in the magnus archives universe WEAVED them together? red string fated, that's what they are? so they're soulmates. that's what you're saying. they're literally soulmates. soulmates as existential horror? just enough of an illusion of narrative agency for jonah/elias to claim, "the Chosen One is simply that – someone I chose" but paradoxically joined by fate, which isn't a good thing! because no god-like powers of hope, or love, or indigestion, or whatever, only fear. because even though both help the other achieve narrative self-actualisation (elias making jon the archive and jon making elias the king of a ruined world), their union also irrevocably destroys their lives as they hurt each other in deeply personal ways which signify their greatest fears. elias manipulating jon, whose biggest fear is mr spider, i.e. loss of control and jon repaying by being the very thing that kills jonah, who has spent multiple lifetimes trying to escape the end. and that's romance <3

A silence meets this question. Armand watches Daniel shift and sink into greater comfort, and there is something so lewd about it — the line of his thigh rising, the disappearance below the knee as it bends around the wall of the coffin, the way this sprawl parts Daniel's legs and speaks such lazy comfort. So lewd, and yet... On his back, the silk cushions produce a haloed sheen around his head. His Daniel, his beloved, who believes in nothing so lofty as religion but believes in Armand, who chases again and again grotesque, distorted divinity and begs each time more sweetly to slake its hunger with his sacrifice. His arrogant, monstrous martyr, laid out in death, in desire — for Daniel, the two are often one and the same.
As he watches Daniel, his malcontent softens. He has given his dear one so much, and yet stripped away so much; he has left Daniel capable of craving only one thing: him. 'There is nothing for you now, Daniel, except me.' How can Armand blame him for acting as every fiber of his being has been warped to act? He cannot.
He is Daniel's self-preservation, he, Daniel's control. It is not Daniel's function to temper himself, but to want, desperately, crushingly, exquisitely. And it is Armand's function to give him everything he wants and to pull him back from that last and greatest obliteration of the self. Give, and deny, and give again. It is not worth it to be angry with Daniel for finding him. He will simply have to hide the forbidden chamber once more. Deny. ... But for now, give.
"I am. You always please me Daniel, even when you vex me. That is the wicked thing," he says at last, ghosting the hand refused to Daniel's grasp up his warm, breathing, pulsing chest, and then dragging the nails back down, over Daniel's stomach. His words carry the lingering edge of reprimand, but the bite is gone out of them. "I am charmed even by your wrongdoing. Did you love it, curling up with a corpse? Sleep well, Daniel?"
Daniel does not expect to get to keep the hand he captured, not while armand is disheveled and fussy, but it still stings as it is taken away. even wreathed in delicious sleepy warmth, armand resists the temptation of his body. then again, daniel cannot remember if he has ever seen armand embarrassed before– perhaps it eclipses everything else, the sudden scramble to reinforce his pride with harsh words, and the tight press of his lips. he needn't be embarrassed at all, really. daniel only wanted to be closer. what a terrible habit he has of reaching for more and more of armand.
“ no, you coffin looks kind of exactly as regal as i thought it would. if it was a pine box, i would have passed it by thinking it couldn't have been yours. ”
armand’s chiding gaze holds daniel’s as securely as if he placed hands on either side of his jaw. he has seen armand wrathful, and this does not hold a candle, but armand does not need his wrath to hurt. only a dull pain, a disappointment that is neither unexpected nor enough to thwart his pleasure, but it is there nonetheless.
he shrugs, amusement flickering across his mouth at armand’s jab about his height.
“ i guess. being too tall hasn’t stopped me before, ” but as if suddenly aware of the need to stretch his legs, he rolls onto his back and hooks his left over the edge of the coffin, perfectly at home. “ well, you know i live to confound you. But you aren’t even a little pleased to wake up next to me? ”

Stoker's book was ending up quite unlike the lurid sensation novel he had first envisioned. In making his final revisions, he fell back instinctively, if perhaps unconsciously, on the sturdy substructure of the litary form that had sustained him since childhood: the fairy tale. The plot took on an archetypal simplicity, drawing on the folktale motif of abused and abandoned children. An orphan (Jonathan Harker, bereft of parentage like most of the main characters) ventures into the woods and is confronted with a terrifying demon king, who chases him home, but the young hero must return to the dreaded place to destroy the monster and restore moral order. Among the many calssic tales evoked are "Bluebeard" (the castle with locked rooms and bloody secrets), "Jack the Giant Killer" (the ogre who chases the protagonist to his homeland and is slain), and "Little Red Riding Hood" (explicitly cited in Stoker's text and mimicked when a wolf crashes through a bedroom window to menace Lucy and her mother). In short, for Dracula to be saved as a publishable tale, it had to be shrunken, collapsed, and dwindled down into a bedtime story of childhood abandonment and rescue.

Delta Green, by Arc Dream Publishing.
WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE
Born of the U.S. government’s 1928 raid on the degenerate coastal town of Innsmouth, Massachusetts, the covert agency known as Delta Green spent four decades opposing the forces of darkness with honor, but without glory. Stripped of sanction after a disastrous 1969 operation in Cambodia, Delta Green’s leaders made a secret pact: to continue their work without authority, without support, and without fear. Delta Green agents slip through the system, manipulating the federal bureaucracy while pushing the darkness back for another day—but often at a shattering personal cost.
In Delta Green: The Role-Playing Game, you are one of those agents. You’re the one they call when unnatural horrors seep into the world. You fight to keep cosmic evil from claiming human lives and sanity. You conspire to cover it all up so no one else must see what you’ve seen—or learn the terrible truths you’ve discovered.
I don't think I can do a better job of recommending Delta Green than Quinns from Quinns Quest, but since his review is an hour long, I'll summarize: Delta Green is a heavy trad game that takes much of the horror of Call of Cthulhu and revitalizes the genre by turning you into everyday government workers pulled into investigations at the cost of their peace of mind. The rules of the game seem to be pretty down-to-earth and detailed, but the mundanity of the core of the game is what allows the horror of the adventures to well and truly pop. In his review, Quinns mentions that for much of the investigative parts of the game, a well-built crew will hardly ever have to roll to gather clues - which means that solving the mystery is doable, smooth, and makes room for plenty of interesting story once you start putting the pieces together.
Detect Or Die, by silkandstone.
Discover who you were. Decide who you are. Solve the Case. A tabletop RPG of neo-noir empiricism, unstable detectives, and total ego death & resurrection. Inspired by science fiction stories of memory and detection like Blade Runner (1982) and Disco Elysium (2019), Detect or Die places the players as the various inner voices of the Detective, collectively embodying the fractured psyche of an amnesiac protagonist attempting to solve the Case - whatever that entails.
One player takes on the role of the World, laying out the setting and mystery for the rest, using a bespoke variation of the Powered by the Apocalypse game engine influenced by Blades in the Dark and Bluebeard's Bride. The rest play Personality Components, the fragments of the Detective's Ego who combine investigative competencies with erratic coping mechanisms, trading off control and emotional stamina to make it through the Case to the ultimate revelations - about the World and about the Detective.
I'm intrigued about the pattern of mystery games and their attachment to systems that encourage you to inflict negative changes to your character as they discover more and more about the truth over the course of play. Detect or Die is unique in that all of the players are technically embodying the same character, or rather, fractured pieces of them. The pull from Disco Elysium gives you some really unique and iconic terminology, such as Exofamiliarity (a skill), Heartbleed (a skill), and Egghead (an archetype). I think it's also fascinating that Detect or Die pulls threads from Bluebeard's Bride, which is also about many facets of a personality inhabiting one person, but is a much different, very horrific kind of game.
The creator of this game has released a free case: The Case of the Signal Fire, as well as an example of play for folks who might want to get a taste of what the game is about. I still feel a little bit out of my depth with this game, and I suspect that's because I'm unfamiliar with much of Disco Elysium, but the combination of PbtA and Blades in the Dark rules certainly has me intrigued.
Elementary, by Black Armada Games.
Elementary is an Agatha Christie-esque game of convoluted relationships, seemingly insoluble mysteries and quirky detectives who solve them. It is GM-less: you take turns to introduce clues one at a time, building up a picture of the murder and who might have done it. And, it's competitive. You each have a preferred suspect and you try to introduce clues that will implicate them. At the end, like the movie Clue, you each create an alternate ending where the detective accuses your target suspect.
If you really like watching mysteries with friends and trying to guess who the murderer is before they are actually revealed, you might enjoy Elementary. It feels like the GM-less format is meant to allow you to play the game competitively if you wish, and GM-less games also typically spread out the burden of rules-knowledge, which means that this game might be easier to pick up if your group has a hard time deciding who should be the GM. Judging by the store page, you might be able to learn how to play Elementary in a way similar to how you might learn a board-game, and that's another strong point in its favor in my book.
Red Harvest: Mystery on Mars, by fuzztech.
RED HARVEST: MYSTERY ON MARS is a one-shot tabletop roleplaying game based on the 1929 novel RED HARVEST by Dashiell Hammett.
Play as a private investigator from the Galactic Detective Agency. You have been hired to investigate a mining colony on Mars. It looks like it’s going to be a routine case. That is, until your client turns up dead at the dig site. It’s up to you to solve the case, and unravel the mystery of the mine.
Includes Player Manual (1 page) with rules for character creation and taking actions, and Game Master Manual (3 pages) with a pre-written mystery scenario and supplemental materials.
Mysteries… in space!
Red Harvest is a relatively simple mystery game with four basic backgrounds for your character, with two skills per background. The game is meant to be a one-shot, with the mystery and setting laid out for the GM, as well as a map for the players to move through and investigate. Equal parts mystery, sci-fi and horror, this is a great game for folks who want a one-and-done taste of roleplay, and might even be a great introduction to the hobby!
Unravelled Knots, by Emily Cambias.
Each Saturday, a rag-tag group convenes in a dusty tea-room to discuss the criminal cases detailed in their local newspaper. Their leader is the mysterious Old Man in the Corner, whose knowledge of each case (and the true perpetrators of each crime) seems unmatched. From each newspaper headline, he extrapolates the truth of What Really Happened to these victims, and the missing pieces of each case that escaped the bumbling authorities—aided by his eager listeners and his trusty piece of string. Based on the book Unravelled Knots and The Old Man in the Corner by Baroness Orczy.
Instead of dice or cards, Unravelled Knots uses a piece of string as a measuring tool for when your story is coming to an end. It's less like a traditional mystery game and more a collaborative storytelling exercise, with each player taking turns adding clues to the mystery as well as offering up reasons as to why those clues bring you closer to the real answer. You take turns playing The Old Man in the Corner, who acts as a sort of Poirot or Sherlock, in that he presumably holds the knowledge about What Really Happened. You also pick up other roles that are meant to introduce new clues, such as the details of the crime scene, the gossip surrounding various suspects, and the real state of the deceased's finances. If you like Agatha Christie novels, you might enjoy Unravelled Knots.
The Road Ahead, by WendigoWorkshop.
In The Road Ahead… you play as a group of young adults returning to their hometown for a summer of fun, parties and nostalgia. After one of their close friends suddenly disappears, new and old feelings stir, eventually getting them involved in the case. Through the carefree lens of an eighteen-something, uncover the truth and make sure it is the best summer of your life!
This game uses a deck of playing cards to provide resources for the characters, as well as dice to help resolve decisive actions. Built on the Songs and Sagas SRD, it's meant to be inspired be OSR-style play, with a flowchart to help the GM put a story together - a kind of adventure-builder, if you will.
The Road Ahead doesn't feel like it's solely a mystery game: your character is probably going to get into dire situations that they need to fight themselves out of, and if the right consequences happen, it feels like there's also personal fallout that each character might have to deal with, which feels very iconic of games about teens and young adults.
Haunted Echoes, by gaa_txt.
Have you ever wondered who died when the echo of a bell toll reached your ear?
Who died when the masked man descended from their black church to burn the flesh of the forgotten? Some say there aren’t enough of them to give names to the bodies, find the culprit. Even worse when you slip through their fingers, the only thing you can do is return as the worst memory you ever had, hoping your loved ones aren’t a part of it.
HAUNTED ECHOES is a lightweight TTRPG focused on one-shots and short term games where we play as weird detectives in the rainy streets of a fantasy Victorian city. Use your talents to gather clues, solve cases, banish ghosts, deal with elemental demons and ruthless scoundrels while trying to search for an answer to the question that haunts your very being.
This game combines mystery with the paranormal, giving your investigators technical and/or supernatural abilities that will help them try to solve a mystery of using a clock that is reminiscent of the same mystery clock found in games such as Bump in the Dark, or Brindlewood Bay. The game is a stripped-down Forged in the Dark rule-set, with play-sheets that are less differentiated than a typical playbook, a brief overview on how to run the game, and plenty of cases, questions, and details to help put together a mystery as well as flavorful characters to learn about as you play.
Some Days, You Just Can't Get Rid of a Body, by C.R. Legge.
You have received a letter that you hoped to never get. The one person that could ruin your life has invited you to a party, and wishes to discuss things…
As you arrive at the old mansion, they find you and ask that you meet them in a side room at a specific time. When the time comes you see a few others moving towards the room as well. Cautiously, you all enter the room and see them standing in front of the fireplace, arm against the wall. Before anyone can say anything, your host falls backwards onto the floor, dead.
You all had a reason to want them out of the picture. Unless you find out who really killed them, any of you could be framed for the murder…
This game is unique in that everyone who sits down to play must embody someone who had a reason to kill the central character. What I think is absolutely hilarious about this little game is the fact that since all of your characters are suspects, you as a group must carry the body of the victim with you around the house, to prevent NPCs from discovering their death. I can think of so many shenanigans a crew could get up to in trying to solve the crime while also keeping the key piece of evidence out of everyone else's hands.

. . . her knowledge of who he was as a person hadn't deepened since their honeymoon. She had expected that they would share everything about their lives, but she was the only one doing the sharing. She had blurted out her entire life story to him . . . and the relief of finally talking to someone had been so great that she hadn't noticed that she was the only one doing the talking. Once she had purged her soul to him she had craved for him to do the same, but he had remained curiously opaque.

Charlie, like a true wife of Bluebeard or daughter of Eve, feels compelled to penetrate the mystery of her uncle’s past. Slipping into the role of detective, she embarks on an investigation that transforms her from dutiful daughter in a family repeatedly described, albeit tongue in cheek, as “average” to transgressive agent who becomes a disruptive presence both in her uncle’s plans and in her “ordinary little town.”
Determined to know her uncle (and here Charlie walks a treacherous tightrope between intellectual knowledge and carnal knowledge), she enters the forbidden space of the room in which he sleeps. That room, in a wonderful Hitchcockian twist, is her own bedroom converted into a guestroom for the visiting uncle. From it, she retrieves a clue that leads her to continue her investigation at the public library. On her way to the library, Charlie has two significant brushes with law and order. First she is halted by a policeman who takes her to task for jaywalking; then she is reprimanded by the librarian (“I’m surprised at you, Charlie!”) for demanding entrance after the closing hour has struck. On the trail of her uncle’s secret, she becomes contaminated by his criminal past, turning into something of a renegade herself who is perpetually disturbing the peace and enacting in unexpected new ways the powerful bond that links niece to uncle.
