Conan the Barbarian and how it correlates to Mike's inner struggles

I know the topic of Mike's bedroom has been talked to death, whether it's the one-way sign or the buff dragon with nipples poster. However, rarely do I ever see talks on the Conan the Barbarian poster or even on the film itself, which is properly due to the film being somewhat notorious for its terrible treatment of women.

Whenever I do see it, people usually stick it up to being a part of his gay sexual awaking, which was sprinkled throughout his introduction in this season. And while I agree that's a part of it, I believe that they choose this film specifically rather than its sequel (which was only two years old in 86') for its depictions of minorities and masculinity to perfectly sum up his struggles with not only conformity but also toxic masculinity of the 1980s.

A HEADS-UP WITH TALKS OF SEXISM, RAPE, HOMOPHOBIA PLUS BREIF NUDITY.

Let's start with how it portrays sensitivity among men. Right off the bat, we see the film favours traditional masculine values with a conversation between Conan and his father shortly before the massacre of his tribe by the doom cult, with him telling Conan not to trust anyone and allow himself to be vulnerable, only trusting the steel of his sword which, in the film's own words, was founded by men.

Rather than this being a critique on how men are often been forced out of emotional availability by generations before them, it's taken as words of wisdom that Conan takes to heart as we see him from a scrawny kid that lost everything to a muscular killing machine, stripped from sensitivity and is seen by other characters as the prime specimen of man.

Male sensitivity is often depicted as a weakness and is unsurprisingly lumped with homosexuality as something to be ridiculed. We see this as Conan tries to sneak into the temple of the cult by pretending to be a shy and nervous bystander while wearing flowers (to which he says "for a girl" when being asked the purpose of them the scene prior), this attracts the attention of a priest who makes suggestive comments about his body all while caressing his chest. He asks to continue their discussion in private, an obvious implication of a hookup, and ends up getting killed by Conan.

Not only it's presented as something antagonistic with the act of desiring another man seen as something perverse, but also, the implications of GNC men shouldn't be taken seriously and only seen as a target for sexual assault.

Traditional masculinity carries into how women are represented. With it not only their screen time is few and far between but also only serve as sexual reward to male characters or to show off their power, women who don't fall into this category are usually ridiculed by our main protagonist, often being called sluts or hoes. They are disregarded shortly after their introduction by being killed and/or raped (including a woman being raped by Conan during his montage to power).

The only recurring female character is Valeria (we only find that's her name in the film's credits, so take that what you will) who gives the illusion of a strong character with being able to fight aside the male characters and her snarky attribute during her introduction, but ultimately ends up being a tool for Conan by falling into the wife role with her never being able to have true goals of her own. She disappears from narrative, only to show up towards the end for a tiny bit to meet her demise.

The poster reflects her role in the narrative with its composition, with her kneeling down so the viewers' eyes lead up to the main piece Conan, just an add-on to show his power.

Now that's not to say it doesn't cater to female viewers (and unknowingly to queer men) by taking full advantage of the female gaze with multiple lingering close-up shots of Conan, some framed in suggestive angles and even scenes only exiting just to show off Arnold Schwarzenegger's muscular frame (take the random sex scene with the witch for example). And while there is female nudity, like women in this film, it's treated with a lot less care with being in wide shots and going just as quickly as it appears.

Which finally brings us to this film's queer coding. It's common for macho action films to fall into homoerotic undertones due to their misogynistic tendencies, this film being no different with it being parodied in other media, even during its initial release, particularly in underground comics.

An example I like to bring up is Conan's "first time" in a fight. He's confused and nervous as he's thrust into battle bare apart from a loin cloth and is attacked by his opponent, but as the fight progresses, he gets more confident and begins to relish in it.

Overall, the film does serve escapism for it's male audience with its power fantasy elements, but rather of it being done through our main protagonist, it's done through the world where the narrative inhabits with it taking pride that worth is achieved through physical strength, wealth and sexual conquest. And while the narrative is the classic trope of the underdog going against a figure of high power, even they can't help finding his lifestyle appealing.

Now....

What does this tell us about Mike?

Well, we know that his family often emotionally neglect him and encourage him to give up vulnerability (i.e., making him give up his childhood toys that have emotional value and viewing his outbursts as just "delinquent behaviour").

His poor treatment towards El starting when they are together at the start of season 3. Starting off somewhat small with implicitly being disinterested in her when they are actually alone, take their conversation during his bike ride to the mall during his introduction or him jumping on the first chance he got on reducing their time together when Hopper stepped in (despite going against his wishes when it came to looking for Will in season 1).

However, when she starts to gain some independence through Max and stops being "his pet", rather than admit his mistakes and apologise like how Lucas does with Max or how he does to Will shortly after upsetting him, he starts using sexist language and starts to get controlling when said independence is applied to her use of powers.

His implicit homophobia during his projection, when Will (Who is canonically considered GNC during this time) implies his changed in behaviour as something negative.

And this might be a stretch, but maybe him tying his self-worth to whether or not he is able to provide and protect is also due to the societal pressures of gender roles and him feeling inferior to El could possibly be a hint of jealousy due to her being able to fulfil said roles despite her gender.

And we all know he has a certain type when it comes to men.

Stan Marsh x Fem insecure!Reader

Theme: Angst

TW: Breif mention of puking (please correct me if im wrong)

Plot: Reader was always liked Stan for a while, but she told herself she'll eventually confess to him, that until when it was obvious that Stan liked Wendy, Wendy was Reader's best friend.

(spoiler alert: reader suffers-)

It was currently monday, where school started.. (Y/n) was walking to class until wendy, hee best friend walked up to her and had her usual iconic smile.

"(N/n)! I almost thought you didn't came to school today, you're unusually late?"

As wendy asked with curiosity, of course (Y/n) smiled nervously as she had a nervous chuckle. She stayed up late at night not being able to sleep since she was doing her homework that she didn't understand much.. But at least she finished it! Since (Y/n) wasn't the type to ask, scared she'll be Annoying to her friends asking for help. But she had her usual lie.

"Ehh- just couldn't sleep, the neighbors had a party last night so... That was something"

As she said in a lighthearted tone with a nervous smile. Of course Wendy hummed before she dragged (Y/n) to class, probably. They had their usual chat until they went past the main four. Cartman, Kyle, kenny and stan... (Y/n)'s eyes drift towards Stan but to her notice she saw stan's head over heels, smiling looking at wendy. Sometimes she knows she shouldnt feel jealous towards Wendy, she was nice, pretty and everything.. Unlike herself she was, Just a typical background character who was she to be jealous about.

As Wendy Happily ran up towards (Y/n), (Y/n) closed her locker door as she just finished putting her books. She hummed in response having her usual calm look.

"What's up-? Did something happen?"

As (Y/n) seemed curious about her best friend sudden burst of joy. Wendy had a smile as she finally spoke up

"Stan asked me to be his girlfriend! He might of puked on me but-!"

As Wendy went on with her rant, (Y/n) felt herself shutting down, everything was going silent. She knew Stan Liked Wendy, Wendy liked stan. Why was she so disappointed of it? What did she expected, it wad going to happen now or later, maybe because it was so sudden thats why? She doesn't know herself... Until she got snapped out of her thoughts by wendy

"(N/n)? (Y/n)-! Were you listening?"

"h-huh? Oh.. Sorry 2 hours of sleep is slowly hitting me-"

As (Y/n) jokingly said managing to push her thoughts and feelings away for now, as wendy had a lighthearted smile before chuckling slightly

"idiot... But hey! I honestly thought i never expected stan to have feelings for me... I should've believed you"

Wendy said in a soft tone. Right... (Y/n) herself even encouraged Wendy, but she really couldn't even avoid it as Wendy liked to rant about stan time to Time so it was obvious how (Y/n) can't even talk about her own feelings about Stan for... Obvious reason. (Y/n) kept trying to Gaslight herself even thinking she moved on 'i dont like him anymore..' which she kept repeating. Even though deep down she knows it was just a Lie just to convince her.

Thats when she thought deep down maybe she wasnt stan's standards even.

Of course now she had to deal seeing her best friend with her new boyfriend now.

The Void Crawler - A Lancer "Dungeon"

I’m working on a “dungeon crawl” style Lancer module. I’ll be posting each “level” to the “dungeon” later, but here’s an introduction of sorts.

Floor 1 & the Lift

The HA Void Crawler. Despite the name and Harrison Armory's history of violence, the ship is a research vessel. The Void Crawl and her crew where sanctioned to explore the galaxy outside of known Union space and find potential livable planets to colonized. While this particular survey has been tainted by the Corpo-State's particular culture of nationalism, the greater Union views this effort as an ultimately good thing for humanity as a whole.

The Void Crawler went dark a few weeks ago.

Now a derelict caught in the orbit of a massive gas giant, all that your employers know is that whatever caused the vessel to be abandoned happened fast and it happened without warning.

None of the missing crew has been found. Early scans indicate that many of the ships systems such as life support and engines have not been destroyed, but have simply been turned off.

The powers that be have turned their gaze on the Void Crawler. Some wish to figure out what happened to the hundreds of lives loss in this mysterious accident. Other's wish to capitalize on the materials and data that this ship have hidden in it's cold halls.

You are a lancer. You have been hired by one of the five manufactures to venture to the Void Crawler and achieve their objective.

As Union's right hand megacorp, General Massive Systems has graciously put it upon themselves to find the missing crewmen and either save them, or avenge them. And of course the data that HA has collected will benefit all of Union, so it would be the kind thing to do is for GMS to bring it back home free of charge.

ISP-Northstar and it's close ally Albatross have a long history of anti-piracy actions, and the this situation has pirates written all over it. A quick strike should bring whatever material and data lost to be put into the right hands.

A popular rumor to what happened to the Void Crawler is that the vessel had run foul with aliens. While most organizations laugh off this theory as omninet forum conspiracy and HORUS memetic manipulation, Smith-Shimano Corpo has not written it off yet. When seeking to perfect the original machine, the human body, maybe xeno DNA is the key.

And of course Harrison Armory has legal claim on the Void Crawler. They made the ship, they paid the crew, they provided the NHP, arguably they deserve whatever is left behind. But in the frontier of the great beyond, anything is fair game.

Regardless of who has hired you, the pay is the same. Lots of manna, a license in a mech of your choice, a genetic backup to be cloned incase of untimely passing. It has to be high, it's going to take at least ten years to get to the derelict.

Sisi (2021) Season 1 Episode 1 Summary and Review

Under the cut for length.

So this episode divides pretty naturally into four chunks - Introductions, Arrival at Ischl, the 'Hunt,' and the Ball.

Introductions:

We meet Sisi first as well as her family. She and Helene are shown to have good relationship, and Max is shown to be the indulgent parent compared to Ludovika. Helene actually catches Sisi with ... well let's just say in her bed with only one hand visible. They then are having a whisper discussion at the corner of the dinner table where Sisi says she was thinking of Count Richard and from the way it is cut we are supposed to think that Helene thinks of FJ when she ... indulges herself.

We also get Sisi checking on some horses Count Richard brought with Max. She does kind of a minor acrobatic trick, falling the first time but succeeding the second. Max is definitely the indulgent parent. She invites Count Richard to stay, and Max seems okay with it. Ludovika then shoots down Sisi's desire for Count Richard, dismissing it as a crush and saying a Count would be unsuitable for her given that Nene will be marrying the Emperor. It is clear here that Ludovika hasn't told Max about Nene marrying said Emperor.

We meet FJ and Grunne in Hungary, presiding over executions. I don't know that I would use the word gleeful to describe FJ's mood, but he certainly has very few qualms. From the camera work and the dialogue, they very much seem to set him up as quite the little tyrant, though the words of a Hungarian woman who cusses him out after her husband is hanged do seem to stick with him even if he laughs them off to Grunne.

We do also get a barebones political introduction to the wider world. The Tsar is an ally of FJ's. Napoleon III is an enemy. We briefly see Napoleon and his ridiculous mustache.

Arrival at Ischl:

We get Ludovika giving Helene a pendant she wore for her own engagement and wishing her more luck than she (Ludovika) had. Sisi then enters in a mourning dress and declares she is mourning her one true love to Ludovika. Ludovika tells the servants to pack the yellow dress.

In the carriage ride to Ischl, we get Helene practicing her lines, as it were. Upon arrival, Sisi breaks protocol - baring out of the carriage before it is opened, and not bowing to FJ until Ludovika pulls her down.

This is the first time we see Sophie. FJ greets the girls, doing a name swap mistake. Sophie is the one to correct him.

We get a very breif interlude where Nene is pissed at Sisi for FJ's name mistake and takes her journal/peotry book.

Then we get family tea. Sophie announces that whoever FJ dances the last dance at the ball with will be the one he marries. He seems kind of of ambivalent about the whole thing. Questions are asked of Nene and Sisi, the fact that Sisi speaks a little Hungarian comes out. It also comes out the Sisi writes poetry, and Nene has the book of poems there to get an uncomfortable Sisi to recite one for FJ. It's about love. FJ laughs, though Sisi is implied to remind him of the Hungarian woman from earlier. Sisi runs off.

The 'Hunt':

We start with everyone on board with the FJ marrying Helene plan. Sisi jumps on a horse (not sidesaddle ....) and declares she is going home. FJ sees her riding out through a window with Grunne and declares 'let's go hunting.'

FJ and Grunne chase after Sisi. FJ calls out to her to halt but she doesn't. Grunne pulls up and they get seperated. Sisi only stops when she approaches a cliff.

Sisi and FJ have a brief argument? (argument for Sisi's side, less so from FJ's). He grabs her arm at one point which causes her dress to get torn and a little wardrobe malfunction. She then announces she is walking home.

She doesn't get far before she's caught by a band of (Hungarian?) rebels, led by a man we saw at the executions earlier. She doesn't say where FJ is, even when she gets pinned down. FJ and then Grunne show up to save the day. A brief fight ensues. Sisi flees on horseback in the middle of it. FJ and Grunne follow her instead of the leader of the rebels in the aftermath.

Sisi runs into one of the rebels, who shoots the horse from under her. She falls and passes out. FJ and Grunne show up and kill the rebel. FJ seems contrite she is passes out and brings her around by a (mild) slap to the cheek. Gunne starts escorting her away as FJ mercy kills the wounded horse, getting blood on himself in the process.

We then get FJ washing the blood off in a creek while Grunne goes and kills at least one more rebel, though the rebel leader gets away. Sisi then asks FJ to not to turn around and it is implied she washes herself as well, though I didn't see any dirt on her ....

We then get Ludovika and Sophie talking about Nene's fertility while sitting in a carriage, only for them to look out the window and see FJ and Sisi returning - Sisi in FJ's jacket and them riding on the same horse. Sophie then asks about Sisi's fertility.

The Ball:

Sisi goes looking for the yellow dress Ludovika had packed, but can't find it. Ludovika says she wanted to wear black so she will wear black.

Sisi distracts a guard and sneaks past but is then caught by Countess E. She asks to be taken to Sophie and is. She asks Sophie for a new dress and after a few questions Sophie gives her one with the warning that it will be FJ's choice.

Once Sisi has the dress she runs into a (prostitute?) coming out of FJ's room, naked, and another naked woman shuts the door. It's brief but it looks like FJ is in there with like 4 women. Grunne shows Sisi out.

At the ball we get introductions with Ludovika reassuring Helene while Sisi is still getting dressed, remembering how FJ grabbed her arm earlier. Sisi is a bit late and makes a ... clumsy entrance.

We get everyone sitting down glaring at each other for a little bit, then a footman brings Sisi to FJ and FJ says he is going to choose Helene because he doesn't like her and he thinks he would stifle Sisi. Sisi objects to this.

There is more awkward glaring during the waltz. FJ dances the last dance with Helene but then gives the engagement bouquet to Sisi and everyone bows.

That's the end of the episode.

My thoughts:

Likes: FJ's characterization - he's a jerkface, but one with character. (And I'm not just saying this because he's amazing fic fodder). Sophie's characterization - she's much more on the fence than in say, the musical, and is definitely there and an influence, but not nearly as over the top as she can be in other adaptions. She doesn't care which girl FJ picks, as long as the girl is fertile. The cinematography was great and I'm not qualified to judge costume accurately, but they were certainly gorgeous.

Meh: Helene, Ludovika, and Max were all good and properly 'human' as it were. I'm not sure how I feel about the marital tension between Ludovika and Max re: Ludovika marrying down. It works thematically, but I'm not sure if I like it. Sisi and Helene's relationship seemed good until the FJ issue came up.

Dislikes: Sisi feels way too modern, both in her characterization and what other characters allow her to do with (minimal if any) complaints. She's shown riding astride a horse several times and in general, just seems to be more a Millennial for Gen Z woman than anything else. The stuff with the rebel leader just feels like an outlandish coincidence for the convenience of storytelling.

Of note - Count Richard, the Rebel leader (and later Andrassy when we meet him) all share a resemblance with the Rebel leader and Andrassy in particular looking _very_ alike.

WELCOME TO PLANET ARGONUS: a breif introduction

welcome to planet argonus, a series about strange things on a planet with airplanes :)

anyways, here's the crazy backstory:

it was the late 2020's, and somewhere in in the omniverse, there exist a strain of universes containing a copy-planet of earth known as argonus, who's planets dominant species are bird-like sentient aircraft known as "elkinets". in a good deal of argonus universes, a black hole is destined to destroy it in the Holocene, unless the pukanis get there first, that is.

in this one particular universe, the pukanis saved argonus and their inhabitants from the blackhole. by using a powerful, strong magnetic discharge, they pushed the black hole away from the planet. however, now that the elkinets know about their existence, they finally introduce themselves and their species to the airplanes.

however, there was another black hole heading for another planet: earth.

by the time the pukanis realized this, the black hole was too close to safely push it back AND save earth. if they tried pushing it back now, the magnetic discharge will also destroy earth, killing all life on it. thus, a mass planetary evacuation was put in place, and all of the lifeforms on the planet were taken up to the megaships.

the original plan was to put them on a planetgon of their own, however while many humans (reluctantly) chose to continue their life on a flat hexagonal copy of earth, many chose to stay within their home universe. since they couldn't keep the humans on the ship forever, they formed a plan with the elkinets, who agreed to allow those remaining humans on their planet.

cannon-wise, most stories take place 500 years in the future (2500's), where humans, elkinet and a wide variety of other sapiens live and coexist together in peace (Mostly).
