Finished up my very first game of Eureka with the FORIVA module - had an absolute blast! The system really runs well, and I had a couple of absolutely wonderful players that I could not be more grateful for.

It's such an amazing experience to get to drop a player in a room and let them basically click on everything interactable. I had pages of notes of what clues were able to be found, and both players were thorough and thoughtful about the things they were seeing. Eureka also isn't afraid to say 'if you don't get this clue, you don't get it, move on' and that's a refreshing thing - I never felt like if I didn't lead a player by the nose, we wouldn't get out of a scene, and the Eureka! point allows a player to go back to a failed roll and gain the associated clue, so as long as the players are active they're never stuck.

I also think that the character building in Eureka is just so flavorful - one of my investigators was a catgirl, and that opened up both a lot of opportunities for her to interact with the world differently, and also gave her weaknesses to play with.

But I think overall the thing I like the most is the play style that Eureka both demands and incentivizes - I've played a LOT of DnD-adjacent games and generally getting information out of the GM is a pain; Eureka says 'don't bother rolling perception or anything, just tell them everything there is to see and let them figure it out' and god that's such a relief. To a certain extent, it's putting trust in the players to be able to pick through the clues to find what's valuable, but also it's giving them the tools necessary to proceed on their own instead of forcing the GM to drive the action constantly. In a lot of scenes, my primary focus was just answering questions they had, and allowing the world to react naturally to them, and that felt great.

Overall I'm really really happy with my experience, and I'm so excited to run the next one - Eureka is a great system for solving mysteries, and I really haven't found anything else that does it near as well.

currently going insane over miko's design and backstory. she's actually so cool wtf.

She is the reincarnation of the legendary Prince Shoutoku, which makes her one of the most unambiguously trans touhou characters.

She has the ability to listen to 10 conversations at the same time, but this is very overwhelming for her ears on the daily, so she wears earmuffs to reduce noise which, although it's not the same thing, can be easily interpreted as audio processing issues/autism.

Finally she isn't quite a catgirl but her hair is always cat ear-shaped which is the next best thing.

Also she looks so cool??
