Some side notes about cultural traditions and engagements:

As a half-Iranian, Lotor would likely know Iranian proposal traditions. The Khaseghari is a step in the proposal process where the potential groom goes to meet the family and potential bride to discuss a marriage. But Allura Singh has no family (besides Romelle) and is of a modern mindset, so if I understand correctly, him courting her in general with his father’s approval would be considered the Khaseghari. During that date where he proposes, he would try to showcase his merits, hers, and how well they they are together to encourage her to accept.

The next step would be the Baleh Borān, which is the ceremony of the groom’s parents offering a ring to the bride, to encourage her to accept the proposal. (Someone please imagine with me Zarkon and Honerva doing this, lol.)

There’s several other steps in traditional Iranian proposals, including the Namzadi (bride and groom exchanging engagement rings), the Shirini Khorān (eating sweets together), the Jahāz Barān (exchanging of gifts), and Hanā Bandān (Henna Night, in which the bride and also sometimes the groom receive henna body art).

But as a half-Punjabi, Lotor would also know Punjabi proposal traditions. If I understand it correctly, he would first ask for Allura’s hand in marriage (Roka), and they would pursue the Thaka together, which is a formal declaration of intent to marry. Then would come the Kurmai/Chunni Chadai, the giving of engagement rings and gifts and sweets (shagun).

From there would be the Mehendi and Sangeet, which takes place the day before the wedding, in which both Lotor and Allura would get Mehendi (henna body art), and be adorned with eucalyptus oil, clove oil and lemon juice water.

(I’ve based this information off what I discovered online. Please someone correct me if I am misrepresenting or misspelling anything. I want to really respect these cultures!)

There’s a lot of similarities between the two cultures’ traditions, so I think Lotor and Allura would try to combine them as best as possible for their engagement ceremonies.

In an opulent proposal, this whole proposal/engagement process could span over quite a lot of time.

2.) But also please consider an alternative that I feel Lotor and Allura are both just spastic enough to do. The proposal and resulting engagement and wedding could be entirely an impromptu thing after some very successful dating and a great day at the race tracks.

By that, I mean, Lotor picking up Allura, the both of them in dirty motor suits from their recent runs, and him begging for her to marry him that night. And she accepts in a giggle. Lotor goes running by his father, declaring loudly that he and Allura are to be married that evening. Zarkon squawks in the background because this is against tradition, how can they possibly engage and marry in one day —

Honerva Dalir magically drops in from a helicopter to drum up all that’s needed for the makeshift engagement rituals, gathering team Voltron to be Allura’s family for the ceremonies. Lotor is racing to buy ring-pops. Ezor naturally has a henna tattoo kit. Zethrid cries for the first time in her life as she runs to get funnel cake for the traditional bride/groom eating of sweets together.

Lotor and Allura are sweaty messes with windblown hair and struggling not to munch on their ring pops, and some of their henna smudges because they didn’t wait long enough for it to dry, but they’re the happiest babs getting married right there at the raceway during a sunset.

“Saawan* is the Month of Love, of Longing for the Beloved

Following is the complete translation of this Shabd of Virah (a song sung when the lover suffers from the agony of separation from his sweetest Beloved) by the Tulsi Saheb Hathraswale. Translation into English by Shweta Sharma.

“Saawan* is the month of love, of longing for the Beloved and as the drops of rain touch the earth, the soul thirsts more and more for union with the Beloved, the Guru.

“Tulsi weeps “Saawan without my piya (the Beloved, the husband) is nothing, the pangs of separation rise like waves in the ocean do, in the inmost core of my heart. Uttering and hearing words do not entertain me or suit my mood, my body and mind are convulsing with immeasurable pain.

“The sorrow caused by the absence of my Beloved husband is so intense that it makes me wander like a mad woman. My heart seethes with anguish, this separation torments me like a thorn that pricks the skin. In this severance from the Beloved Guru, all the money and wealth of this world has become to me like the dust of this earth.

“Dark clouds laden with moisture have now become my enemies as they roar and whirl. I feel the twinge of the aching cry of the peacock and with this, the rumbling and twirling of the clouds fills my inner being and I become one with the turbulence of the skies. My soul begins to whirl and swing between the chakras (the doorsteps of these stations within) and I lose all awareness of the world outside.

“If my Beloved comes along with me, I would undertake this journey within the realms of my inner being day and night. Surat (the soul that is a drop from the Ocean of the Supreme Being) is the current that moves up when it engrosses itself in the Divine Shabd and Nirat (the current that detaches the Surat from the Shabd so that the journey of soul does not get hampered by getting stuck at one region of higher bliss).

“Tulsi makes a string of Surat and Nirat and ties this string with a pole that he makes of his mann (mind) and intellect. He merges with the rhythmic waves of the Divine Word that he encounters higher up and the surat rises swinging with these waves.

“This rainy season, Tulsi says, get active in pursuit of true satsang (‘sat’ — truth and ‘sang’ — company: company of the true Guru, the Beloved, the husband). Only those who cross the third til climb up and down this thread of Surat and Nirat and realize the path of Truth.”

Let’s do this!

Basiswissen Judentum by Andreas Nachama, Walter homolka and Hartmut Bomhoff is a big book, almost 700 pages long.

It is in German but I will write about it in English, summing up the five parts as I go. These parts are:

1. Die Lehre/Teachings 2. Das Leben/Life 3. Die Gebote/Commandments or Rules 4. Die Geschichte/History 5. Im Gespräch/Conversations

(Please note that all attempts at translation are made by me, a not trained translator but English and German are both my mothertongues)

1. Die Lehre/Teachings

Chapter 1: Who is Jewish?

1. Being jewish historically:

- In the bible: Abraham is called Iwri (הָעִבְרִ֑י) (Hebrew), generally though the people are called bnei jisrael, Decendents of Israel in the Torah. The people led out of Egypt by Moses are called Israelites.

- Matrilineally: Moses Maimonides (Rambam) decided based on the Talmud that judaism is passed on matrilineally. But! This is a talmudian development. In Germany the Allgemeine Rabbinerkonferenz Deutschlands (ARK) has declared that children of jewish fathers are sera jisrael (”Same Israel’s”) and are considered jewish (?). This does not include orthodox judaism though. Things are more progressive in the USA

- Union and “Chosen People”: liberal judaism defines judaism’s connection with God as something that does not give them extra privileges but does give them a special obligation and task.

- Jewish identity in a secular society: Rabbi Arthus Hertzberg (1921-2006) defined modern jewish identity in three words: Chosen (a special obligation), nonconforming (judaism in itself is always full of discussion, debate and paradoxes), outsider (clinging to the jewish “otherness” within society). He emphasizes that being jewish means believing in tikkun olam

2. Diaspora: Home in exile

- Diaspora is described as a “chosen exile”, the jewish people however did not, as is common for people who are forced away from their land, assimilate and instead hold onto their customs with the Torah, described as a “portable father land” by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856)

- Jewish people don’t just survive, their culture thrives in the diaspora, creating primarily three (ashkenazi, sephardi, misrazi) but also many more, smaller ones

3. “A remarkable diversity of denominations”

- main difference between liberal judaism and orthodoxy is that liberal judaism considers the revelations of God’s will to be ongoing while orthodoxy considers them to have been completed. Different denominations consider these extremes to different degrees

- The three biggies: liberal, conservative, orthodox (there are many, many, many more smaller branches)

Chapter 2: The jewish picture of God: Father and King

- biblical monotheism is not how things started for the jewish people but it is the seult of a long development process

1. God’s name is unspeakable 

- the tetragram is used most in the tanakh to describe God (more than 6800 times), followed by elohim (over 3000 times). Jewish people replace the name with adonai, Christian people often wrote JHWH, leading to the wrong reading of “Jehova”.

- God’s names and properties in the bible: There are many names of God in the tanakh with different meanings to them all. There are thirteen properties ascribed to God: 1.compassion before a person sins; 2. compassion after a person has sinned; 3. mighty in compassion to give all creatures according to their need; 4. merciful, that humankind may not be distressed; 5. and gracious if humankind is already in distress;  6. slow to anger; 7. and plenteous in kindness; 8. and truth; 9. keeping kindness unto thousands; 10. forgiving iniquity; 11. and transgression; 12. and sin; 13. and pardoning. Jewish people are to attempt to strive to be like God, so to realize and enact the will of God. 

- God as father: describing God’s love and mercy as well as God’s authority and power, this is an originally jewish idea

2. God in the field of conflict between reason and revelation

- Judaism does not consider a God of speculation, focusing on the life with God, studying Torah and following the rules. It is said that no individual can understand God fully, it is necessary to work together for that. The goal for jewish people is to create God’s land on earth, following God’s will

- medieval jewish religious philosophy: First era (up to 1100s, Saadja Gaon; believing in creation out of nothing, people considered God to be one of creation power. Tradition is considered more important than the rational belief in judaism.) Second era (up to 1200s, Salomo Ibn Gabriols; God is considered the link between idea and matter, creation of the world is considered as the result of flowing Godly energy) Third era (1300-1400s, Maimonides; No longer considering a creation out of nothing, instead focusing on explaining God from the assumption of an eternal world. Humans are considered to morally rise and grow continuously.) Fourth era: (1500s-1600s, Chadai Crescas; no longer searching for a proof for God’s existence, instead on the revelation. Wishing to leave Aristotelism behind)

- Kabbalah: from 1300s to 1700s this speculative-mystical practice was developed in opposition to the common religion philosophy ideas

- scientific jewish theology: developing analogously to christian theology. There is never the idea that one has understood absolutely all and everything or that one opinion is more important than another. Theology is used to provide a deeper understanding of the point behind judaism

3. The human in the image of God

- the human being in the image of God is considered proof that all humans are to be treated with equity, that all humans, not only the children of Israel, are meant by this statement. It is used to argue that humans must also strive to be like God and turn God’s will into reality
