mezzo forte — homesick v.2
track 8: non-confrontational | masterlist | track 10: ebb and flow

hajime sits on the couch of his childhood home listlessly. it's the same couch that he watched doraemon on at ten in the evening, and it still bears the same popsicle stains from blistering hot summers spent with his childhood friends. just like before, his nanay stands in the kitchen washing rice and chopping veggies, while his lola sits with her legs beneath the cheap kotatsu they found at a garage sale the year they moved from the philippines to japan. it should feel like home. but a warm, sticky feeling (either from the hot air or from overwhelming guilt, he'll never know) makes him feel like an intruder in a house that should be his.
the rice cooker plays a cheery melody as it begins to warm up, and his mom takes it as a signal to rest beside him. her weight, albeit much less than his, dips into the cushion and forces him to lean towards her ever so slightly. as if on instinct, her hands, still slightly damp from washing the rice, reach up to massage his head, worn fingers threading threading through each strand of hair with intent (it’s a little uncomfortable, given his significant height difference). he doesn't have the heart to tell her that he's grown out of it — that the gentle rubbing of her fingertips atop his scalp isn't as relaxing for him as it used to be, and instead, it leaves him feeling antsy.
a filipino talk show murmurs quietly on the television, the hosts giggling about their carefree lives with a cheesy laughing sound effect to accompany their discussion. none of them seem to be really watching it. the ministrations on his head fail to cease, even as his mom starts speaking to him.
"why hasn't yn been visiting?" she questions, and while she doesn't outwardly express it, he can tell she misses her.
hajime shifts awkwardly in his seat. "she's upset at me, ma-"
"maryosep," she interjects with irritation laced in her tones and a slight tug on his hair. he winces at the pull, and out of the corner of his eye, he sees his lola halt her knitting to listen in. "how did that happen, hm? did you do something stupid?"
his mother always asks despite already knowing the answer. she would ask him if he threw out the extra veggies he didn't want to eat, even if she already saw him dumping the contents of his plate into the trash. she would ask if he was keeping his grades up, even if his teacher already informed her of his inability to stay focused in class through a hastily typed email. it's a habit that she can't seem to rid herself of, and it makes itself painfully obvious here.
hajime's admiration for her planted itself into every crevice of his being the day they moved in. both his lola and nanay knew, even if he never shared it with them. they watched it grow in waves — from youth, when he would give her the advantage in all the games they played together; to his teenage years, when he would stay up late to listen to her fumble at guitar chords on the floor of his bedroom; to adulthood, in which he acts as a moon rotating around its beloved planet. he doesn't have to explain the story, nor does he have to detail any part of the conflict; his behaviors and routines have been engraved into each inch of bone in their bodies — the result of raising a child as hectic as he.
"kase, you have to be honest. walang scared, haji." her hand tears away from his hair and rests itself on her lap. he can't find it in himself to look at her. "you will only make it worse if you can't be direct with her."
he looks at the floorboards, tracing the patterns with his eyes and hoping he'll find an answer between the wooden lines. low hums from the air conditioning echo through his brain, and he wants nothing more than to escape the heavy gaze of his mother and the pressurizing air that his grandma exudes with each still breath. he hates that they know. that his vulnerability is no longer capable of being masked from them. that, in the end, he knows his mom is right.
"do you think you can really love her?" his lola asks as if it's a casual question. slowly, she resumes her knitting, but by no means does her attention stray from him.
"yes," he breathes out, with a smidge of confidence that has unfamiliar origins. "i want to," he whispers.
"then be straightforward." his cheeks squish up between his mother's palms. this time, he can't avoid her or her stare. "tell her you really, truly feel. then you can do that."
his chest burns beneath their combined stares. all he can muster up is a small nod; his body feels like it’d shrivel up if he tried to do anything else. she runs rampant in his mind. he can’t escape it.
“mahal ko, ‘kay?” his mother whispers before pressing a loving kiss to his forehead. hajime wants to sob.
——
everything passes by in a daze. an innumerable mass of photographers and actors and directors distribute themselves amongst her studio — her safe haven. it feels sticky on her skin. but it’s business.
she isn’t quite sure why they all have to be present. frankly, she isn’t quite sure about anything that she’s doing — it isn’t often that she does this type of work. her hands twitch here and there while she click, click, clicks away at her mouse and keys, arranging something that she hopes is up to standard, and at the same time, the coalescence of bumbling and shuffling fills the room a smidge too full. it’s overwhelming. it’s horrifying. she wants to escape.
“…is there any way you can turn up the strings there? i think it’d be cool since we kinda have, like, a huge impactful scene here,” suggests one woman who stands at the side of her desk. she presumes it’s an actor, given by the neat up-do of her hair and the way she taps at her phone and the outfit she bears, which is far from suitable for this kind of meeting.
her suggestion sparks annoyance from the director, who stands behind the desk. “no, no, then it’s too overwhelming. i’m going for something nicer here, like a- what is it- a wash of color,” he rambles.
another protests from another corner of the room, and then another, and then another. she decides it’s better to sit and wait in patience. her palm, sweaty and marred, pulls away from its position and falls to her side. she’s tired of being pulled into the bickering and arguments. all she wants to do is compose and call it a day.
however, even that is difficult when she can’t save her mind from drifting to where it shouldn’t be.
two weeks without contact.
the concept of time suffocates her. tempo is essential to establishing control and energy in music, an idea that’s strongly familiar to her, but when it comes to true time in the real world, she can’t grasp it. however, now that it’s so blatantly in front of her, she can’t run away.
exaggerated complaints and wails and arguments waft about. it's too loud, much too loud, and all she can focus on to distract herself is the couch that she sat on weeks ago, smushed between her two anchors and eating homemade sinigang to soak away the stress. she wonders if the rift would be any less apparent if she hadn't let herself get carried away.
she wonders if they'd still want to sit on her couch, with her in the middle, hajime on her left, and tooru on her right, just as they always had.
a heavy knock disrupts the flow (or rather, the lack thereof) of the conversation. everyone is watching, staring, anxiously awaiting for someone to do something so they can get back on track. she waits for one, two, three seconds before finally getting up to open the door.
no one is there — save for a familiar tupperware container sitting on the ground filled with arroz caldo, his favorite.
her entire body aches, starting with her head, down to her chest, until it finally reaches her legs, which seem to give out beneath her. it's beyond unprofessional. she isn't quite sure if they'd still be willing to work with her after this blatant display of vulnerability. but those worries are pushed away into a far, far corner of her mind when she lifts up the plastic bag and it smells like home.

Serenity
The importance of mental health care in the Philippines is not yet well recognized by the locals, but the government has taken steps to create laws that take care of those matters. Luckily, on the USeP, mental health has been one of their priorities, taking care of their students by providing aid such as much-needed breaks after exams and mental health examinations free of charge.
My app “Serenity Space” uses that same idea. It is a community-based and managed app that allows users to join sessions that allow them to share their feelings with a group whose situation is not far off from theirs.
Hiring professionals on this matter is not really cheap. The aim of this app is to make mental health care accessible and affordable. By making the sessions not only hosted by professionals but also by normal citizens with enough knowledge to host, it utilizes public spaces like parks and schools as opposed to private offices to reduce the costs of bookings. Also, the base app is completely free; there is no price given to anyone who needs immediate mental care.
One of its biggest features is the bio-matching system, where users with similar problems are grouped together into one session so that they can easily relate to each other more effectively and without stigma.
It is an app that makes mental care more accessible and more community-based than others. Although not all features of this app are explained here well, my actual presentation made its points more clear and relatable to its audience.
At the end, small insights and personal experiences were given throughout the class by my professor. He stated that mental health care is not really affordable for most people in this country nor treated as a serious matter, but apps that give importance to simple things and serve a huge audience are greatly needed.
My idea was later approved, and I was very happy. Although it was fun, I really hope I won’t do that again in the near future.

Philippine Collegian (official student publication of UP Diliman):
Seven years of relentless work in New Zealand’s bustling construction industry would catch up to 51-year-old Boy [real name concealed], compelling him to welcome the holidays on leave. On December 20, 2023, mere days before Christmas, Boy and more than 700 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were laid off after recruitment firm ELE Group of Companies suddenly went bust.
Migrante Aotearoa Chairperson Mikee Santos describes ELE’s going under as the “biggest closure of a company wherein Filipinos are the ones affected.” This, while the emergency aid that migrant groups have been demanding from the Philippine government remains in limbo.
Chronic underemployment and contractualization force OFWs to leave the Philippines only to be met with a labor climate just as poor abroad. When OFWs are left miles away from home with nowhere to run but the Philippine government, the state’s utmost duty is invoked: getting at the substandard work conditions that constitute the root causes of emigration.
Since he entered New Zealand, Boy’s order of the day comprised of installing the jibs of cranes, mounting the framing of different structures, and other routine labor. The wage for construction men who work 30 hours a week, the minimum entitlement, is NZD800 or P27,700 weekly.
New Zealand’s steep cost of living, however, forces workers to break even. “Minsan, dahil ‘yung [sahod] nila napupunta lang sa upa, may mga lumabas na ng bahay, natutulog na lang sa kotse,” [Sometimes, because so much of their wages go to rent, some leave the house and just sleep in the car] said Santos. But even then, a graver expense is the weekly installments demanded by car ownership in New Zealand–a necessity for all workers in the “absence of good public transport infrastructure,” Santos claims.
ELE’s willful negligence became more evident with workers like Boy entering their third month unemployed. His job hunting has been constrained by cut-rate companies who go first after migrants without residence for their lower salary grades.
Amid calls from Migrante to expedite the P35,000 subsidy from the Philippine government, Boy and other residents have not yet received aid. As of January, many tranches remain in the air–only 21 out of 97 ex-ELE workers in Christchurch have received aid while just 12 of 95 have gotten theirs in Auckland.
The triangular work or third-party arrangement quickly became a staple of New Zealand’s labor terrain—at the expense of a migrant workforce rendered cheap, docile labor.
To ensure the employment of OFWs abroad, the Philippine government required an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC), a mandatory document that seeks to guarantee work for OFWs in their host countries. However, Migrante railed against the OEC, citing the added bureaucracy. The return of migrant workers from the Philippines to their host countries is bogged down by the OEC’s documentation fees and laggard application process, according to Migrante International.
Requirements like the OEC should ideally provide OFWs with recourse. Instead, they find sluggish aid and tiers of red tapeworsening the blow of a deficient agriculture sector and unstable employment back home, abetted by the state. “Sa mga meeting [kasama ang mga migrante], 100 percent sa kanila ay galing sa bukid ang pamilya … Di sila nagkakaroon ng lupa, so napipilitan silang umalis ng bansa.” [In meetings with other migrants, 100% of them come from families living in the boondocks... they could never own land, so they were forced to leave the country.]
Boy’s experiences constitute a gloomy tapestry of stories shared by all Filipino migrant workers. A unifying element in all of these: migration out of sheer necessity rather than desire. “Sa Pilipinas may trabaho, pero ang kinikita ay napakaliit lang. Hindi malayong ang nagmimithing magkatrabaho ay iisiping mangibang-bansa,” [There is work in the Philippines, but the earnings are extremely little. It's not uncommon for those who wish to work to consider going abroad] Boy said.
Even though 5,000 miles away from the Philippines, Boy finds himself rehearsing the same rituals that pushed him to leave home: work without respite, hopping between employers, and letting the day pass hungry. Boy’s seven-year toil in New Zealand will continue without first solving the dire straits that render him suffocated in his homeland and trapped abroad.
2024 Mar. 3
Migrante Aotearoa on Facebook:
Laid off ELE workers continue to fight to receive their final pay 4 weeks after ELE went into receivership.
Today, we gathered in front of Deloitte Auckland to demand a fast-track release of the workers’ final pay.
We urge the New Zealand government to investigate the practices of labour hire companies, and ensure that workers’ and migrants’ rights are upheld and honoured.
We also demand immediate financial aid from the Philippine government and embassy for all affected Filipino workers.
The current circumstances demand immediate action to alleviate the hardships faced by our kababayans!

hi po! i was wondering if you could recommend some articles or books about visayan mythology, especially those of panay and negros island. also, articles or books about the history of those places before the spanish colonization. thank you so much!
Yup I have a couple. I'm Bisayan myself with my moms family coming from Aklan. Here are a few good sources to read.
- The Boxer Codex (Bisayans Chapter only) This is a scan of my copy of one of the English editions of the Boxer Codex manuscript. (Because lets face it, these books are not cheap and are hard to find)
- The Muñoz text of Francisco Alcina’s History of the Bisayan Islands (1668), translation by Paul S. Lietz (note: The link only brings you to the page of the 4 volumes. However, only volume 3 is available online.
- Relation de las Yslas Filipinas in 1582 by Miguel de Loarca (have to scroll down a bit for the English translations)
- Chants, Gongs and Ancestral Memories of the Panay Bukidnon, Philippine Islands
- Panay mountains host good vs evil rituals (old newspaper clipping I found from 2002 in the Philippines Daily Inquirer)
Edit: I also just wanted to point out that the original name of the island of Negros was Buglas, which is the name I prefer to use when talking about the island.

When the pandemic struck in 2020, I was supposed to treat my parents to a trip to Kyoto-Osaka just in time for the Cherry Blossoms Festival. Everything's set. Visas, roundtrip tickets with ANA, accommodations c/o a very hospitable Japanese host, an itinerary and food crawl plan that I did and finalised for two damn weeks. Everything. We just had to wait for another week for our flight when the lockdowns started.
My parents have been to Japan a couple of times. My father has been in and out of it, with the most recent during a cruise in the Kaohsiung-Taipei-Okinawa regions in 2015. But Osaka fully blooming with Sakura is a totally different story. Besides, it's also a realization of my dream to fly with ANA's new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Truly one of the million dreams deferred by the pandemic.
Now that Japan is about to open their borders to tourists again, I immediately relayed the news to them.
"Kyoto in Spring 2023. Let's go. Plane tickets c/o me." I excitedly said.
"Wowwww. Let's go!" Mom replied.
Okay. Everything's set. The waiting game for cheap ANA fares and accommodation search is about to commence.

I have to admit being ignorant as well about CA. I am Asian but to be really honest, I'm not THAT offended about her Asian night post....at least not so much as to hate her to the core. I do try to understand why others are offended though. However, she has not done any recently, so I don't know how to feel about that. // Hi, I appreciate you admitting that you are not entirely familar about CA or not finding the post that offensive and this might seem like I'm attacking the anon who sent this but I'm not lol. I'm Asian (my mom is half Indonesian and Filipino and my dad is Japanese) and I was born and raised in Queens before moving to Toronto during my senior year then to Valencia for my studies before moving back home here in Indonesia with my parents and to say that I am damn grateful that I was able to move here to Jakarta when COVID broke out because my time in Canada was pretty much okay given that 'Canadian' is more of a nationality instead of a race/ethnicity just like 'Singaporean' and is a very diverse country so I didn't have that much issue with racism there but the racism I had witnessed and endured when I was in the US and Spain was traumatizing. The tasteless "Asian jokes" that everybody (includinh teachers) at school found hilarious and harmless was exhausting and so was being stereotyped and excluded and don't even get me started with the bigotry. The way white people so casually throw insults about Asians being cheap, low class, filthy++ is disgusting, like leave us tf alone we're not the ones who had toilet paper issues here when COVID started because we actually clean our asses with water (go ahead and get triggered Im not even sorry for this I'm so done lol) 🤷♀️ Also it's so damn hard to find a job regardless of how impressive your resumé is and when you do, respect seems to be non-existent. Most of my family works in healthcare particularly as nurses/medtechs and lmao boy do superiors love to make Asian employees who picks up the slack of their lazy and sloppy ass white employees as their punching bag and not to mention patients who are so damn appalled by Asians that they refuse to assistance from them 🤩 Studying in Spain wasn't any better, kids in my class were apparently so proud for colonizing the Philippines for over 300 years and found Filipinos stupid, weak and pathetic and also for some reason thought that every single citizen in the PH were dirt poor and uneducated 🙃 I have never seen anyone dress up as an "American" or a "Spaniard" for Halloween/costume parties and I would ask why buy the answer is obvious: it's stupid and it's not a real costume because it's a damn ethnicity. So why shouldn't this principle be applied to people of color? I remember a tip that was sent months ago and the gist was that you're only supposed to host game and movie nights, no one ever hosts an 'American Night' or 'British Night' because it's stupid as hell and is a clear proof how objectifying and dehumanizing the whole Asian night bullshit was. News Flash: Asians are people and Asians have their own unique sacred cultures and that's that. They are not articles of amusement and aesthetic. Appreciation my ass, white people don't get to indulge on the culture of the very same people they treat with so much inferiority and abuse taking into account that they either actively contributing or fully complicit to racial injustice and the oppression of people or color. There might not have been any recent reports about them actively participating in racism and cultural appropriation but never forget about how the violence against Asians spiked last year and yet this aSiAn NiGhT people didn't bother to show any sympathy/support for the Stop Asian Hate movement. And that is fucking repulsive as fuck. 👊🎤
Thank you, anon, for sharing your story!
It's stories like these that really educate people and give others a different perspective.
I think that we should start looking at cultural appropriation as disrespectful rather than offensive. It can offend people, but it doesn't have to offend everyone. (And even if one person if offended, it's still wrong.)
But it still is disrespectful. It's not OK to take a culture that isn't your own and act like you know everything about it and that you're a part of it.

We Made It announcement! At last official confirmation is here: Louis' next single is We Made It, and it will be released this Thurs! The announcement is brilliant, overlaid on a double of the original clip that he posted in 2018 and that we've been circulating since. Perfect aesthetic perfect in joke nod to the fans which is perfect for what he's been saying is the song 'for the fans', flawless all around, bravo! The lyrics in the old clip were "I remember those nights, (me with you or being with you), cheap drinks through the whole night" but journalist Bree Player tweeted the lyrics from today's clip, drawing attention to the fact that it isn't actually the same clip and the lyrics are "meet you at your uni" in place of the "me with you" line which is maybe new, or maybe just sounds different in the new version. Cue a lot of discourse for not a lot of lyrics but it has been a slowish day... We'll see what the lyrics (and their context) are soon enough. The song will be debuted on the Sirius morning show Thurs at 8:30 am ET though of course it will first be played at the international listening parties! All of them take place tomorrow though due to the perpetual annoyance that is time zones, not at remotely the same time as each other; the first of the events will be happening in about nine hours. What country will leak info first?? Lay your bets! South America would be traditional but the Philippines have a massive head start timezone-wise so.... Some of the listening party hosts have asked for questions for Louis, as have many others, everyone wants to hear your questions for Louis this week! The most exciting opportunity to grill him is via a Most Requested Live Ask Me Anything which they tell us will be posted Nov 2. All at once this time then? Or will we be getting clips randomly and unexpectedly for months again? cause TBH I'm fine with that. He was also, last but not remotely least, announced as a guest for the Build Series! It's an online in-depth interview series, very serious and respectable. So cool! A few lucky fans will get to attend and sit a few feet away from him in the tiny studio and I do mean a few fans: get ready for a real fight to the death for this one there are gonna be like 30 seats yiiiikes.
Niall arrived back in the UK, went to a Derby match with his dad, posted an morning time not dressed yet dancing in the bathroom to his own song on the radio clip, and went on what seems to have been a successfully incognito trip to a London shopping mall on a weekend afternoon! Nice. He posted a series of pics from Flicker tour bidding the era farewell once again.
Also: interesting chatter out there about Irving Azoff's ongoing battle with the Radio Music License Committee over licensing fees, saying that artists are getting screwed over. It's been suggested that perhaps Harry is choosing not to pursue radio promo (and thus not buy into the payola, etc) in order to support this fight. If so maybe it's working; he's charting, and well, and thus getting radio play even while giving his promo dollars seemingly pretty much all to streaming. Obviously there are an array of things happening with probably multiple reasons of which that is just one piece, but it's an intriguing one.

From Head to Toe
What kind of shampoo and conditioner do you use? My shampoo is Dove and my conditioner is a local brand. What's your favorite color and brand of eyeshadow? I don’t do eyeshadow. I don’t know the first thing about makeup so whenever someone puts eyeshadow on me I just tell them to go with whatever shade they think would suit me, and thankfully they’ve always made good judgment calls lol. Ever use tinted mascara? I don’t think so. Do you think liquid eyeliner is too much or just right? Man, there’s more to head to toe than just makeup :/ I love liquid eyeliner, it’s the only piece of makeup I was ever invested in and had several of at one point. Lipstick or lip gloss? Lip gloss. I find lipstick too bold and the few times I wore it didn’t feel right for me.
One cosmetic product you can't live without is: Couldn’t care less, honestly. What lotion would you want to have a lifetime supply of? Am not a lotion girl either. The only reason I constantly have lotion is because everyone gives them as gifts, so with me it’s like while I use lotion regularly, I don’t have a go-to brand because I have various kinds haha. Innie or outie? Am an innie. Where is your biggest birthmark? The one behind my left shoulder is the most noticeable one. Are your toenails painted? No, they aren’t. Are your feet ticklish? The back of my feet used to be but through the years other parts of my body have become more ticklish.
Yummy in the Tummy
What's your position on sushi? Love them. Love all seafood. With sushi, the more unfamiliar the fish the better – I always love trying out new kinds. I do think sashimi is a tad bit better though. What about mushrooms? I can’t call myself a mushroom connoisseur haha I know so little about them cause they aren’t really a part of our cuisine. Is truffle a kind of mushroom? I like that, but that’s about it for my mushroom appreciation. Spicy food? You’re not Asian if you can’t handle spicy food and we’ve all been raised to enjoy them. I know only a handful of people who don’t like spicy food, but they’re picky enough eaters as it is so they don’t really count. Johnny Depp is taking you out! What restaurant do you choose? Idk, I’ll let him take me wherever he wants to eat. He deserves that after the shitfest that was Amber Heard. Favorite drink to order at the bar? Like I said in a previous survey, I’ll flock to the Long Island Iced Tea if they have it on the menu. I forgot my back-up whether it’s Screw Driver or Cosmopolitan, but it’s def one of those. For cheaper, more relaxed bars, I’d get a Zombie. Favorite wine? Hate wine. Favorite beer? I hate beer for the most part but we had had to cross paths in the past because some bars I’ve been to only served beer, blech. That said, I found myself enjoying Red Horse the most, followed by Pale Pilsen.
Favorite drink to cool off with? Just good old ice-cold water. Favorite drink to sip by the fire? I don’t really do that. Favorite midnight snack? Mi Goreng instant noodles. What's a food both you and your animal companion enjoy? Burgers. Filipino dogs or askals are accustomed to eating human food with no negative consequences because it’s how they’ve always gotten by, living on the streets; and since my dog is part askal he also loves his human food and started shunning dog food at a super early age.
Favorite snack when you're watching rented movies? I don’t rent movies but uhhhh I like having Potato Corner with me when I’m watching in the cinema, but I don’t typically eat anything if I’m only watching from home. What do you cook well? Nothing. Favorite food at a BBQ? Thanks, Tumblr; today I learned BBQ can refer to an event. Haha seriously though, I just learned that now because we don’t do that here. Favorite soda when you were a kid? Always hated soda. Dessert you're craving right now? Red velvet cookie sandwiches sound so fucking good right now. Favorite fruit to put in a smoothie? It’s a big nope for me on smoothies, sir.
Good Times
Who do you know that gives the best hugs? Laurice. I don’t even have to think about this. She hugs everyone that enters Skywalk so she’s pretty much a master at the craft. Who took you on your most romantic date? I’ve only had dates with Gabie. Who do you know that can give a good back rub? I dunno. I’m ticklish, so I don’t like the idea of being massaged anywhere. I feel like I’d just flinch the second I feel someone’s hand on me. What's a song you and all your friends sing along with? Does it have to be sing? Super Bass is universally memorized as far as I know hahahaha. But if we’re going with sing, Edge of Glory is very well-loved too. When it's just you and the girls/guys, what movie do you put in? My friends and I don’t really do movie days/nights because we’re constantly busy with academics. The one time we watched a film, though, it was The Devil Wears Prada. Best party you ever threw? I’ve never thrown a party for myself. My best big party remains to be my 7th; my parents really pulled out all the stops for that and it’s still memorable for me until today. 7th birthdays are a bit of a big deal in Philippine tradition (I never really knew why lol) so my party was organized in a way an 18th birthday would be, but some parts were obviously tweaked to be fitting for a 7 year old – it was held at a ballroom in Makati Shang, my mom used plush flowers for my 7 roses, all the kids that were invited had to be in gowns, etc.
Who was with you on the coolest road trip ever? I haven’t had a cool road trip yet. The few road trips I’ve had with friends I was the sole driver, and I was always left feeling completely pooped at the end of the day -__- Who was with you on the coolest camping trip ever? I’ve never camped before. Who would you take with you on a luxury cruise? My girlfriend, but you knew that already. I suppose going on a cruise with my college friend group would be chaotic fun too haha. Who was with you the last time you got into trouble? I got in trouble in a PE class, so I was with my classmates. Who's got your back in a fight? The top three people I can think of are Gabie, Angela, and Andrew. Who makes you feel gorgeous on a bad day? Also my girlfriend. Who makes you laugh until you cough blood? That’s...graphic lmao, but I’d go with either Aya or Jum. Who would you take with you as a date to your sister's wedding? Again, Gabie. Name the first five friends that come to mind. ^ Her, Kate, Laurice, Andrew, Angela.
Hobbies and Interests
What keeps your mind and hands busy when you're not at work? If I don’t have to be doing any work you can usually find me lounging with my phone or laptop. What bars or clubs would we expect to find you at? Nothing you know. I typically go to the bars along the street where my university is since they’re close enough, it’s a lively and popular hub for college kids, and the drinks are cheap. I’ll sometimes go to BGC for drinks but that is extremely random; I probably go there twice or thrice a year. What magazines do you or would you subscribe to? Haven’t thought about magazines in a looong time. If you started a book club, what genre would you be covering? Anything nonfiction I suppose. The only time I’ll cover fiction is if a book is historical fiction. If you could be president of a club or organization, what would it be? My own org’s. I had the opportunity to be president this year but I passed up the chance since I didn’t want my senior year to become too hectic, especially since I was running for honors and I had joined another organization. I went for a certain vice presidency position instead. What causes would we see you protesting on behalf of? Anything to do with women’s rights, anything anti-Duterte or anti-Marcos, anything to support the working class if they are being abused. Do you like to shop for clothes by yourself or with friends? I like having a second opinion. Yoga at home or at the gym? No yoga. Where would you want to work, if you could? WWE.
Odds & Ends
Did you wish on the last shooting star you saw? That hasn’t happened in a very long time. I would though, just to feel like a kid again. Are you a fabulous host? I haven’t held the responsibility of being a host yet hahaha I’m too scared to start. I’d rather hand the job to my friends who I know can do an exponentially better job than I would. Why won't jeans ever go out of style? Because they aren’t limiting and are incredibly versatile – mom jeans, ripped jeans, bell bottoms, skinny jeans, what have you – so it’s been easy to have them adjust to whatever style is trendy any time, any decade. Is the truth really out there? Ugh, get out philosophy questions it is 3:07 AM. Assuming you ever have kids, what will you name your daughter? Your son? Olivia for a girl. Still clueless about boy names. Has anyone ever crossed oceans of time to find you? No? Admit it, you loved Dirty Dancing. I’ve never even seen it.
The Name Game
Who's the first friend you call when you wanna go out? Laurice or Angela, depending on who is free or what I wanna do – if it’s to have drinks I call Angela, if it’s to get a lunch at Area 2, Laurice. Who's the first friend you call when you wanna hang in for the night? I don’t do that. If I have plans to hang in the evening I have to have every detail mapped out – who I’ll be with, what we’ll do, whose house we’ll be staying at – days in advance because my mom is strict and because I’m Asian lmaooooo Who do you call when you're freaking out? Gabie, always. Only she knows how to calm me down. If Gabie’s the one I’m having issues with, I go to Angela. Who do you call to try something new with you? Anyone who’s down to try the new thing, honestly. Who do you call when you need bail money? Myyyyyyy dad, probs. My mom would kill me. Who would kick someone's ass for you? My girlfriend. Who would lie to keep you out of trouble? ANGELA. Sometimes when I’m at home I’ll get a text from her saying, “If my mom calls you, tell her I’m with you studying” even if she’s somewhere either drinking or hanging at Hans’ condo. I’ve pulled the same shit with her too whenever I’m at Gabie’s place. Who would make you go to the gym, even if you're too tired? I don’t think anyone would be able to pull that off. If I’m too tired already, don’t force me to do anything. Who would come take care of you if you were sick? Realistically my dad. But I wish Gab can do it, too. Who would help you host a posh dinner party? Jofab probably. The guy can cook. If we were any closer, I’d recruit him to make some damn good steak and pick out the music to play. I’d also ask Laurice to come up with the decor, since she’s good at that stuff. Who would help you clean your house before you had houseguests? Out of all the people I know, only my mom could make an area completely spotless. Who would enjoy watching Disney movies with you? Gabie. But really, how are you? I’m doing okay, but I really must head to bed after this survey lol. Did you make sure to get in some "you" time today? I’ve had tons of that this whole month. I gotta say I’ve been needing it and it feels really good. How many loved ones did you get to talk to today? I think 11? – four in my immediate family, my dog, my lola, Tito Rocky, Gab, Angela, Andrew, Leigh. Gonna treat yourself to something tonight? Sleep. What would you like to dream about tonight? I’m not hoping for anything but my recent dreams HAVE been part odd and part hilarious so I’m kinda excited to see what my mind has in store for tonight. Did anyone hurt your feelings today? Nope. Do you have a furry companion to cuddle up and read a book with tonight? I have a furry companion but he hates staying on beds, so I’m ruling out cuddling.
Before we part...
What's your name? Robyn. What's your sign? Zodiac? Taurus. Ever had Chicken Guadalahara? No, I’ve never even heard of it. Always willing to try, though. Daquaris or Margaritas? Margaritas, but only because I don’t think I’ve tried the first one before. Ceasar's or Bloody Mary's? Neither. I’ve never tried Ceasar’s and Bloody Mary is just so fucking nasty to me. Mexican food or Italian food? Italian. I very rarely crave Mexican, but Gab and I will often have dates at Mama Lou’s, our go-to Italian restaurant. Ocean, lake, or river? Ocean.
Cabin in the woods or beachfront home? Beachfront, for sure. I don’t think I could ever get tired of the beach/sea/ocean. Karaoke or dancing? Neither if I’m sober, both if I’m drunk. All or nothing? All.

Server Rack vs Cabinet
You might think that a server rack and server cabinet is the same thing. But, that’s not the case at all. It is true that they fulfill the same purpose of accommodating server equipment in an organized manner. But, there are some fundamental differences between these two.
Server Rack vs Cabinet
Let’s get to know what those are…

Looking Back On My Family Trip To Western Europe
This spring’s family trip to Western Europe was fast-paced, tiring, but fun! Originally, I was hoping to go somewhere a little more exotic, cheap, and colorful (like Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, or New Zealand), but the family ultimately decided that Europe was the place to go, at least this year. At first, I was slightly disappointed, but the silver lining at the time was that I was going to travel to some new places I had never seen before. Always a plus. But at the end of it all, looking back, the trip was fun and full of new sights, scenes, and experiences. And the saving grace: The Netherlands, in all of its color and beauty.
As I reflect on this trip, here are the words and phrases that best sum up my European family vacation to Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Cool Weather. Cold Netherlands. Fries. Old Architecture. Colorful Tulips. Windmills. Bridges. Tons of Walking. Tons of Driving. Speeding Tickets. A Parking Ticket. Huy. Tripoded Family Photos. Asian Food. Super Expensive Water. Churches and Cathedrals. Never Finding The Family. Sausages and Hot Dogs and Wursts. Stoemp. Beer. Chocolate. Pastries. Gouda Cheese. More Fries. More Tulips. Other Flowers. The Grand Keukenhof. Bluebells. Dutch Landscape Reflections. Waffles. Family. Fried Stuff.

I got a hold of an ARC for this most excellent book at ALA Midwinter this January, and was excited to read it -- especially after sitting in on a panel hosted by @penguinteen’s new imprint Kokila, that focuses on presenting works by folks on the margins.
And after finishing it this morning, I decided to do something I haven’t done before: write a review of it. I originally posted it at the link above, but here it is in its full text glory.
I’m not sure where to start with this because there’s so much about Patron Saints of Nothing to love: do I mention how authentically-but-not-tropely teenager-like Jay, the protagonist, feels? Should I talk about how the book makes a real-world event, happening right now, become meaningful and accessible to readers across the ocean in ways that journalism can’t? What about the fact that every person in this story (it feels weird for me to call them characters at this point) gets an opportunity to live and tell a story that is as much their own as it is the story of millions of people? Selfishly, the queer in me wants to talk about the representation, but I think it might be best to start somewhere else.
Randy Ribay wrote a book that is a lot of things: loving, illuminating, excellent — but the word I keep circling back to is important. I think that’s why it’s hard to decide where to start – there’s no single thing about the book that makes it important; it’s the book in its entirety, and how all the different elements I mentioned above – and more – feed off of and into each other.
The story is about the aforementioned Jay (short for Jason) Reguero, a teenaged Filipino-American boy who lives in Michigan with his Filipino dad and his white mom. From the outset, you feel like you already know Jay: he’s the one brown kid who you know of from school but who you don’t really know. This is partly because you’ve noticed him for what makes him different, and without realizing it you decide you know something about him because of that; but it’s also partly because he’s mastered the skill of fitting in just enough to stay out of the general consciousness as a way to deal with the other-ness he feels, and to stay safe in his school.
Mind you, the secret that nearly every teenager learns, but only once they’re well past their teens, is that everyone in high school has that same sense of desperation in wanting not to be noticed, because different is dangerous. But Jay shows readers another part of that, that a lot of us miss if we aren’t visibly a minority ourselves: white readers get a taste of what it’s like to want to fit in, but to have something about you that is overtly and immutably different. Jay can wear the same clothes, speak the same language, aspire to the same image of adult success, but he’ll still, always, be (and be seen as) Filipino-American – for better or worse, depending on who you ask.
This kind of otherness is powerful and permeating, and the way Ribay tackles it in Nothing is kind but also unflinching. There’s an interaction early on between Jay and his best friend that highlights the pain of it – when his friend starts a conversation with the dreaded, “promise me you won’t get offended,” the conversation goes exactly where you expect it to. But it all has to be said, and said in a way that is as explicit as it can be, especially for a novel that’s written for young readers: there’s a problem with whiteness being the default, and there’s a problem with assuming that things that differ from the norm is bad, and while someone can be as well-meaning as the day is long, sometimes people are perfectly justified in their anger at what you thought was a compliment. But it also shows that people can forgive, even if that forgiveness doesn’t come in that moment, or that day, or even that week. This interaction, for all its cringeworthiness, is also genuine and human and important.
This exploration of otherness gets explored from the other side of Jay’s identity as well when he travels to the Philippines to investigate his cousin’s death (the central plot of the book). I want to acknowledge here that this particular plot point is probably the only aspect of the book that I was skeptical of before I started reading Nothing. There’s a tendency I’ve found in YA lit to give the protagonists “diet superpowers,” that is, to make them remarkable in ways that are just past what one could realistically expect from a character their age. And while I don’t think that’s a problem – if it inspires young people to be more than they can, good! – it also feels a little cheap. So when reading the synopsis for Nothing, I felt a little skeptical reading that a seventeen-year-old was going to the Philippines to investigate his cousin’s death.
Fortunately, I was reassured early into the novel (and then very very nervous for him given the task he was tackling) (oh no my sweet Jay what are you getting yourself into) to find out that Jay’s… well, he’s very much a realistic seventeen-year-old, with no preternatural sleuthing skills to speak of. His time in the Philippines plays out realistically, and Ribay is kind enough to the reader and to Jay to make sure that he is looked after by a cast of characters who are believably competent, which gives Jay the space he needs to grow up quickly but authentically, given the circumstances. Disbelief happily not suspended!
During his time in the Philippines, the reader is given a chance to understand how painful being the other can be, which is so in line with Ribay’s dedication of the book: for the hyphenated. Although it’s touched on during his time home, once Jay lands in Manila the reader gets to see him grapple with the cost that he’s paid to try and fit in back home. Perhaps the biggest: Jay doesn’t speak Tagalog, one of the two national languages of the Philippines, and an overt marker to nearly everyone he comes in contact with that something about his identity doesn’t fit. We see how this recognition of his otherness plays out in his interactions variously with a customs agent, his family, and the folks he meets along the way, and I couldn’t help but wince for and with him each time someone else pointed at it. I think this is something that folks from mixed backgrounds intrinsically get, but is less obvious to others, and should be a core take-away for readers:
For the folks who exist on the margins – folks who straddle nationalities, or color lines, or various other identities, there’s immense pressure from both sides to fit into one identity or the other.
For some folks, I think the result is that one never gets to feel fully anything, and that can feel incredibly lonely. I hope that readers of Nothing pick that message up, and realize that they can be kind, and understanding, and try to hold space for the whole complexity of a person.
That last bit – recognizing that people are not simple things where a single label, or even two, can substitute for the whole-ness of their beings – is probably the biggest take-away of this book for me, and Ribay gets it across beautifully. The entire book lets the reader follow Jay’s journey from not just understanding himself as more than just a young man who’s going off to college because that’s what expected of him, but to understanding that the same thing applies to everyone around him. Every character, it seems, is introduced simply (justifiably so – Jay’s the narrator), but over the course of the book you learn that they are so much more than the handful of identity markers they get in the start.
That’s how people are in real life, and perhaps that’s why I think Patron Saints of Nothing is, above all, important. It’s important for others in the margins to read and see themselves reflected in art and the media – it lets them know they aren’t alone, they are worth telling stories about, and that someone else cares enough about them to put forth the effort. It’s also important for everyone else, because it gives anyone who reads it permission to feel and see aspects of themselves reflected in people they might not otherwise click with. The world always needs more empathy, but especially nowadays, it seems like we could go for a double helping.
Patron Saints of Nothing, by Randy Ribay, is slated for release in June 2019 by Kokila, an imprint of Penguin Random House LLC, New York.
