PAC: How will the battle end?[You/Your gang v Toxic Opps series]

Tope Left to Right= Pile 1-> Pile 2, Bottom Left to Right- Pile 3->Pile 4
Introduction
Hope this reaches those who have been having a desire for the blood of the enemy, the one that is in the world that comes against you the moment you step out. Inspired by my favorite movie series of All time John Wick.
🗡 Reading 1: "Silent Exit, Shattered Stability" Timeline: Within 2 weeks to 1 year
You disappear from their life like smoke—no warnings, no long goodbye, no explanation. They underestimated your silence. By cutting off all contact, you removed their energetic anchor. Without you to monitor, provoke, or manipulate, they spiral. Their obsession grows as your absence becomes louder than any words you ever spoke. At first, they fake it. But over time, their mask slips. They lose their grip—emotionally, mentally, even financially. It's not just about you leaving; it’s that you took with you the attention, energy, and reflection they thrived on. Their support systems begin to crumble. The people they used to triangulate start to walk away too. The image they maintained begins to crack. Within months, they're a hollow version of themselves, while you bloom—untouched, unbothered, and glowing in a peace they’ll never taste again.
================================================
🔥 Reading 2: "Power Moves in the Shadows" Timeline: Within 5 weeks to 2 years
This win is slow-cooked and deliciously strategic. You don’t rush it. You don’t need to. You play chess while they play checkers. With quiet precision, you leverage your connections—friends in higher places, allies who owe you favors, or people who simply respect your character. You don't need to attack them directly. You whisper the truth to the right ears, and doors that were open for them start to close. Opportunities vanish. Their name gets replaced on guest lists. Projects get restructured without them. They try to fight it, but it’s not a loud war—it’s a thousand silent no’s and missed calls. A gatekeeping they can't prove. You are seen as the phoenix; they, the liability. The petty satisfaction? Watching them realize they opened the door to their downfall. And that you didn’t lift a weapon—just a single finger pointed in the right direction.
================================================
⚖️ Reading 3: "The Law of the Land, and the Land of the Law" Timeline: Within 7 weeks to 3 years and 1 month
You collect evidence like moonlight—quietly, thoroughly. You have receipts. Timelines. Screenshots. Statements. You make your move not out of spite but out of necessity. You report them. Maybe to HR. Maybe to legal authorities. Maybe to a higher force like a licensing board or community body. At first, they scramble. Deny. Lash out. But the weight of truth is too heavy. The case builds slowly. You may even forget it’s ongoing. But they don’t. Every step forward they try to take is interrupted by consequences: court summons, workplace investigations, public exposure. Their energy drains in legal fees, stress, and reputational damage. Eventually, they are held accountable—fully. You don’t celebrate publicly. But you sleep better knowing justice was served—not by rage, but by righteous precision.
================================================
🌍 Reading 4: "Universal Justice & Cosmic Reversal" Timeline: Continuously over 5 years
This is a divine orchestration. The kind of karma that doesn’t come as thunder—but as a long rain. You do nothing. Others start to see the truth for themselves. Allies emerge—not just for you, but others who were wronged by your opps. You become untouchable, while they become increasingly exposed. One by one, their masks fall—publicly. People stop defending them. The people they betrayed turn on them. Friendships dissolve. Relationships break. Their lies become too obvious to ignore. And the world? It responds faster than expected. New rules, new systems, new energies align against them. They keep trying to play the same dirty game in a reality that no longer supports it. And you? You ascend. Higher than they ever imagined. Without revenge. Without effort. Without having to look back. This is divine justice in its most poetic form—and it will be undeniable.

(If you enjoy my shorter works, I highly recommend that you start reading this fic series as it will have twice the amount of words and effort put into it, and will be my main focus going forward. It's a charming tale that is very Disney-like about how Caleb and my wittewife oc, Clara, came together. Although they don't appear in this chapter, they will appear in the subsequent ones. I appreciate any and all feedback if you are interested in sharing or sending any. Being that this is my first ever chapter fic, I'll be promoing and reblogging about it a lot.)
Even though the Titan did enjoy watching his living son from the floating cubes that drifted around in the realm known as the In Between as doing so gave him the opportunity to watch his son grow up, he also liked spending time with his unhatched children.
Tonight was family game night.
“So,” the Titan began, smiling what was a close approximation to a smile down at his three little titan eggs who were sitting in front of him in a pool of shallow water.
Egg number one wore a pink bow, egg number two wore a blue baseball cap, and egg number three wore an egg-sized ‘Bad Girl Coven’ t-shirt, which matched with the one its father wore.
Reaching behind his back, the Titan happily pulled out two board game boxes.
The box in his left hand had a picture of a checkerboard, while the other displayed the image of a black king chess piece.
“What game should we play tonight?” he asked his egglings, not expecting them to give him a verbal answer as he had the ability to comprehend them without verbalization.
He holds up the first option. “Checkers?” He lists off, shaking the box some before bringing it down and lifting up the second option, repeating the process. “Or chess?”
The eggs, of course, stayed silent about the choices, but still communicated to their papa.
“…,”
“…,”
“…,”
The Titan couldn’t contain the buoyant laughter that decided to bubble up out of his chest when he heard them.
“Very well,” he said with a second chuckle, stowing the checkers box behind his back once again before using a single beckoning gesture of his finger to raise a table from below the shallow surface of the water.
Once the Titan sets the chess box down on the table, he opens it and takes out the board before laying it out.
“We’ll start with chess first and play checkers afterward. I’ll even throw in an extra game just for the fun of it,” he tells his eggs with a tender smile, placing the black and white chess pieces in their proper places.
He puts the pawns in front, then lines up the other pieces symmetrically with the king and queen in the middle.
Next, the Titan walks over and, with extra care and very gentle claws, picks up his little eggling in the blue baseball cap.
Heading over to its chair, he produces a plump white pillow from thin air onto it and carefully sets it down.
Two more plump pillows are conjured across from the table as the Titan picks up his other two eggs and settles them down on their seats.
They were going to watch their papa play against their sibling in a match.
Upon taking his seat at the table, the Titan casts a sunny smile across his scruffy face as he gazed at his child.
"I know this is your first time playing chess," he began in a kind and understanding voice before continuing.
"So I'll share with you what I know."
"...," went the egg to its father.
Such an innocently childlike response led to the Titan's soft chuckle, his bony smile reaching all the way up to his round, hollow eyes.
"Don't worry," he reassured to his unhatched egg softly.
"I'll explain all the basics to you, and we'll start slowly and take our time while playing."
Chess was a challenging and complex game, he knew that.
The Titan wasn't very fond of the classic board game at first when he first started playing it with a human man with blonde hair and a forelock.
However, as their games progressed and the man taught him the basics, his liking for it increased.
"...?" asked the egg.
The Titan nodded. "Promise," he said as their chess lesson began.
The two most crucial pieces in the game are reached for by clawed hands.
"See these two guys here?" The Titan asked his egg, holding the pieces in his hand before continuing.
"In chess, we call them kings. Each player only gets one, and they're the most important pieces in the game. You want to attack your opponent's king while also keeping your own king safe and protected."
King.
Safe.
Protected.
The Titan's mind was filled with memories of his oldest son.
He sighs of bliss from the memories before continuing with his explanation.
"Once the king is captured, the game ends, so always remember to keep him shielded."
As the Titan lists off the other pieces, he points at them.
"Each player controls 16 pieces: 8 pawns, 2 bishops, 2 knights, 2 rooks, 1 king, and 1 queen."
"...?"
Papa Titan chuckles.
"The knights are the little horse heads, and the rooks are the little castle towers," he told his little one.
"Each chess piece has its own unique way of moving across the board and potentially capturing your opponent's pieces as it goes."
He points at the pawns.
"Pawns have the ability to move one square forward per turn, except for their first turn when they have the ability to move two squares forward. Pawns move diagonally forward by capturing other pieces diagonally. They cannot move backwards."
After explaining the other pieces to his egg in great detail, Papa Titan moves on to the gameplay and strategy.
...
"... And that's the game!" The Titan finishes his final statement with a grin.
Hands are placed on his hips.
"Sounds simple, right?"
"...," the egg said otherwise as a multitude of thoughts swirled inside its shell.
The Titan nodded with complete understanding of the overwhelming feeling.
"It's a lot to take in, but I think you can do it," he gently encouraged with a fatherly smile before continuing.
"Since you're just starting out, focus on always protecting your king, and you'll do just fine."
He gestures for the egg to make the first move.
As soon as he blinks, he observes that a white pawn has moved two spaces forward.
The Titan smiles, doing the same with his black one.
Upon the second blink, his eyes detect an advanced white king on the board, causing him to let out a jolly laugh.
"You're already a natural at this," he complimented, moving his knight.
Blinking, he notices that his child has pushed his king piece up a space.
In response, the Titan opened up a rook by pushing a pawn.
After more pieces are pushed, the Titan blinks again and sees that he's been checkmated.
He gives a playful laugh. "Well, that was certainly fun! You win!"
A hand hovers over the egg, gently patting the top part of its shell. "Good job."
...
After family game night concluded, the three eggs, who were now wearing small night caps that fit them just right, were curled up in bed under a thick comforter together as their father entered their room with a light brown hardcover book tucked under his arm.
"I'm hope you're all ready for tonight's story," he began, his voice so soft and tender as he took a seat in the rocking chair in the middle of the room.
"Because it's one of my favorites," he reveals with a gentle chuckle, showing off the cute cover to his children.
It was adorned with a gold border as scatters of sparkles and hearts were displayed in the background.
A happy human dressed in a pink suit and a winsome witch dressed in a blue gown were in the foreground, their respective palismen on each of their shoulders.
Behind them was another human with a beard, angrily spying on them in a bush with a bird perched on his head.
"It's titled 'A Winsome Witch And A Happy Human'," The Titan read as he opened the book and turned to the first page.
"Our story begins in Bonesborough..."

Judd Legum and Noel Sims at Popular Information:
On Tuesday morning, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced changes to how the company will handle content moderation across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Each aspect of Zuckerberg's announcement appeared designed to ingratiate the company with President-elect Donald Trump and his MAGA base.
For example, Zuckerberg said that Meta would "move its Trust and Safety and Content Moderation teams out of California and our U.S.-based content review is going to be based in Texas." According to Zuckerberg, "as we work to promote free expression, I think it will help us build trust to do this work in places where there is less concern about the bias of our teams." The only people who believe that people in California are inherently more biased than people in Texas are right-wing partisans. The reality is that there are millions of conservative people in California and millions of liberal people in Texas. And content moderators are only enforcing policies created by Zuckerberg and his executive team. But moving part of Meta to Texas allows Zuckerberg to follow the lead of Elon Musk, who has relocated the headquarters of Tesla and X to Texas.
The idea, advanced by Zuckerberg in his announcement, that Texas is a bastion of free speech is also a myth. Last month, for example, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) "threatened to pull funding from Texas Children’s Hospital" because a doctor in Houston posted a viral TikTok video advising patients that they do not have to answer questions about their citizenship status. After Abbott's threats, the video was taken down. In 2021, Texas enacted a law censoring how teachers can discuss race and gender in the classroom. Since 2017, Texas has had a law requiring most companies doing business with the state to sign a statement about their views on Israel. Zuckerberg's announcement on Tuesday followed a series of other moves calculated to curry favor with Trump. Meta has donated $1 million to Trump's second inauguration celebration. Zuckerberg promoted Joel Kaplan, a Republican operative and close associate of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, as the Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer. (Kaplan appeared on Fox & Friends on Tuesday morning to promote Meta's content moderation changes.) And on Monday, Zuckerberg announced that Dana White, the CEO of UFC and close friend of Trump, would join Meta's board of directors.
[...]
Fact-checking Zuckerberg's claims about fact-checkers
Zuckerberg also announced that Meta will "get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with community notes similar to X, starting in the US." He justified this move by attacking the professional journalists that Meta has partnered with since 2016. Zuckerberg said that "fact-checkers have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they've created, especially in the U.S." Zuckerberg did not provide any examples or evidence to support his claim. Lead Stories, Facebook's most prolific fact-checking partner, said Tuesday that in "all the years we have been part of the partnership, we… never received any complaints from Meta about any political bias, so we were quite surprised by this statement." But Zuckerberg's new position is likely to please Trump, whose 2024 campaign "waged an aggressive campaign against fact-checking in recent months, pushing TV networks, journalism organizations and others to abandon the practice." Trump's pick to chair the FCC, Brendan Carr, sent a letter to Meta and other tech companies in November accusing them of participating in a "censorship cartel" by using fact-checkers.
Meta's fact-checking program was designed by the company, not journalists. It was intended to insulate the company from responsibility for misinformation that spread on the platform. As part of Meta's program, it partnered with and provided financial support to certain fact-checkers certified by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN). Meta chose when and how to use these fact checks across its platforms.
Over the years, Meta took a number of steps that made its fact-checking program ineffective. For example, it banned all fact-checks of politicians. And, as Popular Information reported, Meta pressured the IFCN to certify low-quality right-wing websites, including the Daily Caller, as fact-checkers. The Daily Caller then used its position to downrank factually accurate articles that cast Trump in a negative light. Meta also used fact-checks produced by journalists to "inform their automated systems, sometimes leading to erroneous application of labels that fact-checkers were unfairly blamed for."
[...]
A green light for hate speech
Zuckerberg also announced that Meta would "get rid of a bunch of content restrictions on immigration and gender that are just out of touch with mainstream discourse." The previous restrictions on immigration and gender content on Meta platforms involved hate speech. The new rules permit users to “call for exclusion or use insulting language in the context of discussing political or religious topics, such as when discussing transgender rights, immigration, or homosexuality.” Specifically, it is now permissible to describe people as feces or filth based on their immigration status or gender identity. Meta also now allows “allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation, given political and religious discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality.”
Mark Zuckerberg’s recent moves to end fact-checking and allow hate speech on Meta platform is a sickening caving into the right’s war on content moderation standards in the name of “protecting free speech”.

Series: Some Things Are Evergreen
Chapter: 1/6
Ship: Hawkeye Pierce/BJ Hunnicutt, Hawkeye Pierce/OFC (background)
Note: So excited to jump back into this series! Thank you to everyone for your patience!! Updates will be coming every Saturday. If you're a new reader, make sure to take a look at the story notes if you're interested in diving in right away!
Hawkeye thinks he's gonna boil over from the building heat. It's all long stares across the mess tent table or knees touching under the checkers board or the lightest grazes of Beej's fingers along his hip during the changing of the post-op guard. And while he's known ever since that first weekend in Seoul that once BJ gets an idea in his mind, nothing is going to make him waver from it, Hawk is still eternally frustrated by the fact that he hasn't even gotten the chance to memorize BJ's taste.
As Hawkeye and BJ sink deeper into their new casual sexual relationship, the nature of how they've related to each other up until now begins to change. Old tricks from their pasts no longer work the way they remember. Ghosts haunt the edges of their memories. Pockets of private time are fewer and farther between. And ultimately, come hell or high water, they'll either learn how to use their words or they'll lose everything before it even really begins.
#oh man i'm so excited to get this out there#i really really hope you all enjoy the ride#midnight trepidations#some things are evergreen#bj hunnicutt#hawkeye pierce#hunnihawk#beejhawk#hawkbeej#my writing

Games that Boost Logic and Reasoning Skills for Kids

The Importance of Logic and Reasoning Skills in Early Childhood Education
Building a foundation in logic and reasoning from an early age is essential for a child’s cognitive development. Kids who engage in activities that foster these skills often develop a stronger foundation in problem-solving, decision-making, and creative thinking. Plus, these skills play a huge role in helping kids excel academically, socially, and even emotionally.
How Logic and Reasoning Shape a Child’s Future Learning
Logic and reasoning skills aren’t just for math or science! They help children develop a structured way of thinking that influences almost every area of learning. From solving math problems to understanding a story’s plot, kids use logic to process information and think critically. Strengthening these skills early on can give kids a huge advantage, setting them up for success in a variety of subjects and real-life scenarios.
Why Logic Games Are Vital for Developing Early Critical Thinking
Logic games encourage kids to think analytically and approach problems from different angles. Games like pattern recognition, puzzles, and strategy-based games require children to make decisions, recognize patterns, and foresee the outcomes of their choices—all key elements of critical thinking. These games can be especially effective in creating a fun, pressure-free environment where kids can learn through play.
Types of Games That Promote Logic and Reasoning
Logic-boosting games come in various forms, from digital games to classic board games. Here’s a look at some types of games that are known for enhancing kids' logical and critical thinking abilities.
Strategy Games to Develop Decision-Making and Planning
Strategy games like chess and checkers teach kids to think ahead and plan their moves. These games encourage decision-making by requiring kids to analyze possible outcomes, weigh options, and make strategic choices. Strategy-based apps, like "Logic Legends," also provide a similar experience by blending the need for critical thinking with the excitement of gameplay.
Pattern Recognition Games for Logical Thinking
Pattern recognition games are fantastic for helping children identify sequences and predict patterns. These games, such as memory matching or shape-sorting games, encourage kids to notice similarities and differences, a key part of logical thinking. Apps like “Pattern Finder” are designed to help kids recognize patterns in a way that’s both engaging and educational.
Puzzle Games to Strengthen Problem-Solving Skills
Puzzles are a classic choice for developing logic and reasoning in kids. Whether it’s a jigsaw puzzle or a Sudoku challenge, puzzles require children to apply reasoning to find solutions, strengthening their problem-solving skills. Puzzle apps and games for kids, like "Puzzle Master," provide digital versions of these activities, making them easily accessible anytime.
Best Games to Boost Logic and Reasoning Skills in Kids
If you’re looking for specific games that are particularly great for enhancing kids' logical and critical thinking abilities, here are a few that stand out. These games combine fun with mental challenges, helping kids develop crucial skills while enjoying themselves.
Game 1: “Logic Legends” for Strategy and Planning
“Logic Legends” is an excellent game for teaching strategy and planning. Kids are presented with a series of challenges that require them to think multiple steps ahead. This type of game helps kids understand the importance of strategy, which can translate into everyday decision-making skills.
Game 2: “Pattern Finder” for Developing Reasoning Abilities
In “Pattern Finder,” kids solve puzzles by recognizing and predicting patterns. It’s perfect for building reasoning skills because kids must observe carefully and think logically to progress. Pattern recognition is a vital part of logical thinking, and games like this make it fun and engaging for kids to practice.
Game 3: “Puzzle Master” for Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking
“Puzzle Master” is a favorite for encouraging critical thinking. This game challenges kids to solve a series of increasingly difficult puzzles, requiring them to apply logic and think critically. It’s not just fun but also a great way for kids to practice using their reasoning skills to find solutions.
Kinder ABC - A Fun Way to Build Logic Skills
Among the many games out there, Kinder ABC is a newer app designed to engage kids in learning while developing essential skills. While it’s primarily focused on teaching ABCs and foundational literacy, Kinder ABC includes mini-games that promote logical thinking and pattern recognition. It’s a gentle introduction to logical reasoning for young children.
Tips for Parents to Enhance Logic and Reasoning Skills at Home
Encouraging kids to play logic and reasoning games is a fantastic start, but there are additional ways to reinforce these skills at home. Here are some tips to help you make the most out of these learning opportunities.
Integrate Logic Games into Daily Routine
Try weaving logic games into everyday life! For instance, ask your child to solve simple riddles or puzzles during car rides or while waiting at a restaurant. Small games like these make use of downtime and keep kids engaged while boosting their logical thinking.
Challenge Your Child with More Complex Games as They Progress
As your child’s skills develop, introduce them to more challenging games. Logic games like strategy puzzles and multi-step challenges encourage kids to stretch their thinking and solve complex problems. This progression keeps kids from getting bored and continues to stimulate their reasoning skills.
Final Thoughts
Logic and reasoning games do much more than entertain—they prepare kids for a lifetime of learning, problem-solving, and critical thinking. By engaging kids with fun, challenging games, we’re setting them up for success in school and beyond. Plus, with options like Kinder ABC, parents can introduce their kids to logic and reasoning in a playful, accessible way.

Jake Leschyshyn took a pass from Anton Blidh at the net front and buried his eighth goal of the season. 1:28 later, at 17:42, Blake Hillman shot the Wolf Pack ahead through traffic that Brandon Bussi never saw. The goal was Hillman’s career-high fourth of the season. Georgii Merkulov drew the Bruins even 5:41 into the second period, jamming home a rebound for his 29th goal of the season after Garand made the save on the initial point shot from Mason Lohrei. The goal sent the sides to the third period deadlocked 2-2. Patrick Brown drove down the right-wing side just over the halfway mark of the period, flipping a pass to Nick Zabaneh in front of the Wolf Pack net. Zabaneh, in his professional debut, buried his first career goal at 11:11 to make it 3-2 Bruins. The goal would stand as the game-winner. Merkulov hit the empty net at 18:38, potting his 30th goal of the season. He became the first Bruin since Frank Vatrano in 2015-16 to hit the 30-goal plateau in a single season. Veteran forward Jayson Megna led the way for the Bruins in the season series against the Wolf Pack, scoring nine points (3 g, 6 a) in ten games. Brett Berard (4 g, 3 a) and Alex Belzile (3 g, 4 a) led the way for Hartford with seven points each against the Bruins this season. Wolf Pack Outlook: The Wolf Pack became just the second team in 21 tries to win a best-of-three, First Round Calder Cup Playoff series after losing Game 1. The comeback was completed on Sunday afternoon in Game 3 when the Wolf Pack defeated the Charlotte Checkers 3-1. Jaroslav Chmelař broke the ice 10:10 into the game with his first career Calder Cup Playoff goal, giving the Wolf Pack a lead they never lost. Chmelař drove in on the right-wing side before cutting to the net and snapping a shot by Magnus Hellberg. Riley Nash extended the lead to 2-0 at 4:21 of the third period. Brett Berard found Nash at the backdoor, hitting him with a pass that set the veteran up to slam the puck into an empty net for his second goal of the series. The powerplay goal would stand as the game-winner and the series-winner for Nash against his former team. Berard then used a burst of speed to create a shorthanded breakaway, which he converted for his first career Calder Cup Playoff goal at 14:52 of the third period. Brendan Perlini got the Checkers on the board 39 seconds later at 15:37, scoring from the top of the left-wing circle on a six-on-four advantage, but it would not be enough. Garand slammed the door shut from there to help the Wolf Pack complete the comeback. Garand made 38 saves in the victory, tying the single-game Calder Cup Playoff career-high he set in Game 1. Nash (2 g, 1 a), Berard (1 g, 2 a), and Nic Petan (1 g, 2 a) are all tied for the team lead in points with three each through the First Round. Nash’s two goals led the Pack against the Checkers, while Berard, Petan, Brennan Othmann, and Mac Hollowell all exited the series with a pair of assists to their credit. Bruins Outlook: For the second consecutive spring, the Bruins earned a bye through the First Round of the Calder Cup Playoffs. The Bruins finished second in the Atlantic Division with a record of 42-21-6-3, good for 93 points behind only the Hershey Bears. Their 93 points were good for second in the Eastern Conference, behind only the Bears, and fourth in the AHL behind the Bears (111 points), Coachella Valley Firebirds (103 points), and Milwaukee Admirals (97 points). At home this season, the Bruins went 21-9-3-3. They finished with 48 points at home, which is second in the Eastern Conference behind only the Bears. Their 21 wins at home were also second in the Eastern Conference, once again only trailing the Bears (29). During the regular season, Merklov led the Bruins in both goals with 30 and points with 65 (30 g, 35 a). Megna, meanwhile, led the club in assists with 37. He recorded three assists in the season finale against the Wolf Pack. 𝐈𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞

Or how would it be like to play chess with union members

Wolf Keum
Surprisingly, Wolf plays chess pretty well. The only downside, however, is that he is an extremely unstable player. He can make truly genius moves, but at the same time he is often very rash - and that leads to a lot of blunders
Wolf is the kind of player that never resigns. He continues even when he only has pawns to go against your bishops and knight. Maybe because of his pride, he would rather let the checkmate play out than give up. By no means is he doing this to try to win against you by making you run out of time or to offend you in any way*. Like in his real battles, he doesn't stop unless completely defeated
He once refused to accept your draw so you checkmated him out of spite.
Wolf is also an aggressive player. One time he brought out his king to the center of the board... It didn't end well. As he later said "Desperate situations require desperate actions"
Playing chess with him is quite pleasant occasionally. It's one of the few moments when he is completely calm, observing the chess board, thinking about your next move
You still remember vividly that one time you two played a blitz game with money at stake. Wolf only had 3 seconds left on his clock, so you were sure that you'd win. The moment he moved his queen from across the board, however, was also the first time you lost your composure in a game. While you were pacing around and swearing, Wolf just laughed, amused at how you managed to miss mate in 1 (he was also really happy that he beat you!). Needless to say, that day you lost the bet and also the money :)
Jake Ji
You can't convince me that he is good at chess
He knows all the grandmasters/promising youngsters and watches the tournaments but doesn't know how to play it
Learned chess because he saw some TV series cough Queen's gambit about it and thought that it was cool
He once tried to pull a Fool's mate on you. He lost :)
Every time a game starts he asks you where to put his king "Was it on the e square or d square?"
Has never won against you, but also doesn't agree to you playing with handicaps. As he says "I only want to win against you when you are at your best. Victories obtained otherwise won't satisfy me"
His moves are generally along the lines of "It looks symmetric this way!" Basically they are random
Plays checkers with chess pieces...
Jimmy Bae
Since everyone generally agrees that he has a great grandma, I'm going to assume that she was the one who taught him how to play chess
Before he met you, he thought that he was a genius (i mean, his opponents were literally Helmet and the like, of course he would win every time)
Your first game ended with him swiping all the figures off the board to the ground- Because he couldn't accept his defeat.
You thought that was going to be your last game against him, but he just kept coming to you, asking for a rematch
Though they all end violently, he does get better every next game :)
He had no idea what endgames were, until you taught him. Then he learned them all in a single day ;)
Thought that you cheated when you captured en passant, was very embarrassed afterwards when he learned that it was a real move
Hwangmo Ju
You are definitely the person who taught him how to play chess
But sadly, he is awful at it тт-тт
Hwangmo, unlike Wolf, resigns the moment he thinks he's going to lose. So your games with him are usually short
The only times he doesn't resign is when he can't see the inevitable checkmate. Unlike wolf, who lets the game continue just because, Hwangmo genuinely doesn't notice it.
He definitely needs at least 5 seconds to process that he was checkmated. One time he even wanted to move his knight before you kindly reminded him that he'd lost the game :)
While Hwangmo does enjoy playing chess with you, he also understands that he isn't that good at it. Until he played against another Ganghak student. He won. Splendidly. As they say, everything is learned in comparison
Donald Na
The first and perhaps last time you've ever won against him was the first time you two played together
Donald has very little time, so he rarely indulges you in playing chess. When he does agree, you usually only play blitz. And well, your skills at it aren't what you'd call the best, therefore you rarely win
While it appears that he is extremely good without practicing, he actually analyzes chess games every evening during his free time
Though he doesn't admit it, beating you is becoming harder for him day by day, so he practices in order not to lose
Forrest Lee
This sweetheart learned chess just to be able to play with you 🥰
You were in the hospital at that time, bored out of your mind, so he came with a chessboard and kept you entertained the whole day
He isn't very good at it right now, but he is a fast learner
Went to cheer you on on all your games
Bought you an expensive limited edition chess set for your birthday
Honestly, the best one out of all union boys
I'm sorry Forrest, I ran out of things to write 😭
Bonus:
Rowan Im
Recommends everyone to play on lichess saying "The only reason you're playing on chess.com is because you haven't tried lichess"
Definitely the type that tries to flag his opponent**
Once during an over-the-board game you didn't notice that you'd forgotten to press the clock. He just sat there "thinking" while waiting for you to run out of time. You lost :(

* Why is it disrespectful to not resign in chess? To resign a game is to acknowledge that your opponent has reached a position so strong that only through gross mistakes would he/she lose. Not resigning can be considered disrespectful because it assumes your opponent will in fact make such mistakes
** Flagging in chess refers to the act of winning (or drawing) a game on time. Flagging is more usual in blitz and bullet games since players often get in time trouble in faster time controls.
Dirty flagging is playing from a losing or drawing position and then winning because your opponent's time runs out - usually by throwing in extraneous or sacrificial checks to force your opponent's time to run low.
(From chess.com)

A/n: yay, I finally wrote something not only about wolf!! To be honest, I'm just like Jake in chess(( I know the theory, but in practice I always make terrible blunders 😖 basically I play awfully (I learned chess when I was like 7 but then quit after 2 years)
I wanted to add something about eunjang boys, too, but I didn't have anything left to write. The only scenario I had suited Rowan-

Deserved Better - Loser's Bracket Round 1: Khaimuk (Love Sea) vs Gram (Not Me)

[Submitted Reasons Under Cut]
Khaimuk: "Terrible love interest"
Gram: "What was that plot? B + G = Black + . . . Eugene? ToddBlack hits hard, but with GramBlack we could've had it all. Yet somehow in a show where everyone could be shipped with everyone else, Gram and Eugene never made sense! And it's not because he was going after a girl, but because of how he went about it. Gram being creepy stalker about Eugene and kinda betraying Black by going after Eugene was such an odd thing for Gram to do, and his character lost some of his spark with the Eugene story. Gram could've gotten back with Nuch and I would have been thrilled, but instead the series gave him a random plot with a girl who he had no real chemistry with instead of giving him Nuch who was perfect or Black (who he seemed to have a relationship with in the novel). What were the writers thinking? All the chess pieces were on the board to play the most epic move, yet they decided to play basic checkers? Bleh."

Sensory Overload (Alec x Reader) pt2
Part 1
Next part
A/N: why do I stan Alec so much 😭 this may be another series similar to the Embry ones
A/N: I use uno literally every time I want these characters to get competitive and I’m not sorry
A/N: thank you for taking the time to read this and sorry for any mistakes!
★,。・:*:・゚☆. 。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆ 。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
Y/N
The plane ride was awkward. Jane seemed even more upset than when you first met. How did these guys have enough money for a private jet anyway? You had always hated silence. It always made you feel like you had to say something. Maybe that’s why you ended up with the gift you had. To you silence was more deafening than mindless chatter. You tried to focus on the outside of the plane, to get your mind distracted on literally anything else. You tried to hone in on one the plane engines, apparently you did a little too hard because you jumped out of your seat when you felt a hand on you.
“Jesus y/n are you okay?” You were surprised to see Felix talking to you but it was a welcome relief from pure silence just moments prior.
“Sorry, I was just trying to zone out.”
“What’s exactly making you nervous? The plane or us?”
“I’m not nervous.”
“Well you’re something because you hand hasn’t stopped tapping since we began flying.”
You sighed, “you guys are just really quiet. Like really quiet. Quiet makes me anxious.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?” Alec asked, he had given you space when you met back up with Jane. You figured he was trying to figure out whatever the hell was going on.
“Because no one else was? I didn’t even realize I was fidgeting. Sorry felix.”
“You don’t have to apologize, you were just starting to me me anxious.”
“What’s the matter Fe? Scared she’s going to unleash her gift again?” Demetri teased
“Uh yeah, im not trying to have my head feel like it was going to explode. We can’t run away up here.”
“Don’t worry Felix, I have to focus really hard for me to be able to do that.”
You weren’t sure he believed you or not but Felix was friendly enough to continue talking, “how did you get along by yourself then?”
“Not well, the woods aren’t really that quiet but also I haven’t actually been by myself for awhile, I was moving around before you guys found me. Regular silence by myself is fine, it just feels tense in here.”
Felix simply nodded, “well do you want to play a game then? I’m bored”
You shot up at an excuse to do something, “yes! What do you want to do?”
“I don’t know, there’s a chess slash checkers board and tons of card games.”
“Do you have uno?”
“Yes, I don’t think anyone of us have ever played it?”
“You guys have lived how long and haven’t played uno? Lame. Can we all play please?”
“I’m in.” Demetri went to get the cards and you and Felix went to sit around eachother.
“Alec, Jane do you want to play?” You asked, realizing your mate had been very quiet throughout all of this.
“No.” Jane said simply
“The twins don’t usually want to join, cara.” Demetri warned, this got a hiss out of Alec. Demetri just put his hands up in fake surrender
“Alec, can you play with us? Please? It’s more fun with more people.” You wanted to get to know Alec more, but you could tell Demetri wasn’t lying. They both kept to themselves.
“Why would you want to play with me? Just play with them.”
“Well id like to play with both of you, but Jane said no. You haven’t given your answer yet. You got me on this plane. I’m just asking you to play a game.” You crossed your arms, “it won’t kill you to try something new. I promise.” You really should try and keep your attitude in check. You could hear how annoyed you sounded.
Alec seemed surprised that you would stand up to him. Unbeknownst to you, Felix and Demetri were staring back and forth at you two to see who would lose their cool first. No one tried to push the twins to do anything. Alec surprised everyone when he conceded
“Fine. How do you play?”
You smiled when he sat down next to you, you went over the rules and began to deal out the cards, “hey Alec?”
“Yes?”
“I just realized you never told me your gift. Is it the same as your sisters?”
“No, mine is the opposite of yours pretty much.”
You froze, “what do you mean?”
“I can take away your senses. You want to see?” He asked sarcastically
“Kinda.” You finished dealing and held your hand out to him, “okay do it.”
Alec hesitated, “you actually want me to?”
“Well you all dealt with mine, it’s only fair. Just start with my hand.”
“I like her.” Felix said
“Me too, she’s alreadymaking things interesting.” Demetri agreed. Alec rolled his eyes and let the mist circle your hand.
You gasped and took you hand away in surprise before putting it back slowly, “so that’s what the mist that I saw was. That’s terrifying.”
“Yeah I’ve heard.” Alec grumbled, he retracted his gift
“I wasn’t done. I was going that It’s also one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. I wish my gift had a mist.”
“Yours is better. People know when I’m using mine. You could do more damage from a distance.”
You smiled at him, “okay let’s start.”
The game got intense, Felix was very competitive. So were you. And so was Alec. All three of you were disappointed when Demetri won. You played teo more rounds but he somehow won those too.
“You have to be cheating.” You huffed
“Sorry cara, guess I’m just lucky today.” He smiled.
“I’m with y/n on that, how do you win every round?” Felix asked
Demetri just chuckled, “come on, fe. These two should get to know eachother before she decides if she actually wants to stay with us. Let’s play checkers.”
“That’s fine, I need to try and win at something.” The two went back to their original seats and left you and Alec there. You were both quiet for awhile and you began wringing your hands together.
“I’m not angry, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“I just don’t know if you want to talk to me.”
Alec sighed, he looked over to the other guys who were pretending not to listen. And his sister who had been focused on a book since you got on the plane.
“I do want to talk to you. I’m just not good at this.”
“That’s okay, Alec. You don’t have to do anything you’re uncomfortable with. I’m sorry for getting snappy with you earlier.”
“You don’t have to be sorry. You were right. I was the one who asked you to come with us after all.”
“I agreed to come. I shouldn’t have used that against you.”
He pondered that for a moment, “what do you want to talk about?”
“I don’t know, you told me about the volturi. How did you end up there?” You noticed everyone freeze at your question, well that couldn’t be good.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alec
You were beating yourself up for not asking y/n what had been bothering her. It had taken everything in you to not use your power on Felix. You didn’t know you could feel that amount of jealousy. All you could was stare at your mate opening up to someone who wasn’t you. You had begun to think she was going to choose Felix as mate over you. Why would she choose you? Then she asked you to join them and on top of that she actually wanted you to use your gift on her. And then she liked it?
It was a lot to process. Now she was asking about you. It wasn’t just your story to tell, you had tried to see if Jane was okay with it but she had refused to look at you since you met back up. It’s not like your story was a secret, if she really wanted to know what had happened she could. She was still looking at you,
“Alec, you don’t have to tell me if you aren’t ready.” She broke your train of thought, you wondered how long you had kept quiet.
“Sorry. It’s just not a very happy story.” She surprised you again when she gently grabbed your hand.
“That’s okay. You can tell me when you’re ready.” She squeezed your hand and began to pull away, but you held it tight, surprising the both of you. Damnit. You were going to fast. You waited for her to pull her hand back but she never did. She seemed to relax the rest of the ride the plane there. Even in the silence. When you were about to land you decided to let her know about some of the other gifted vampires.
She didn’t deserve to go in blind.
“You should know about the one in charge, aro. he can read every thought you’ve ever had. He’s going to request you touch his hand to do that.” She listened carefully, you couldn’t tell if she was worried or not. Might as well let it all out there.
“There are others. Marcus is another one of the leaders, his power is to see the strengths and weaknesses of the bonds people share. And Chelsea, she can make you completely loyal or disloyal to your covens. Her power only fails on mates, and shields.”
“What does she look like?” You looked at her to elaborate, “I don’t want to be manipulated into staying somewhere I don’t know. If she begins talking to me I’m not going to just stand there.”
“She won’t. I’ll talk to the leaders first. I won’t let her do anything to you. She has brownish blonde hair, and she’s always with her mate. It’s hard to really think of anything that makes distinguishable. She isn’t usually there unless they absolutely need her.”
Felix laughed, “you better not let her hear you say that.”
“I’m not scared of her. What is she going to do, stick Afton on me?” Everyone chuckled at this, even Jane smiled into her book.
“Okay. You swear she won’t try anything on me?”
“I swear.”
You should have let her hand go but you didn’t want to. You kept your eyes trained on the ground. She began to rub circles on the back of your hand.
When you landed she gave it a squeeze before letting go.
“Alright,” she said, “lead the way.”
Y/n walked behind Felix and Demetri on the way to the throne room. You went first with Jane to debrief Aro. You wished she was still holding your hand. You felt that pang of jealousy again that she felt so comfortable with Felix and Demetri, but also relieved that they seemed to like her.
“Welcome back, everyone. Ah, and it seems like we have a special guest.” Aro said
“It appears Alec has found his mate.” Marcus told the other two.
“How wonderful!” Aro clapped, you saw your sister roll her eyes
“And how did you all find her?” Caius asked.
“She ran away from newborns causing the scene in Seattle. She’s gifted.” Jane said.
“Master, may I show you before you ask her?” You didn’t need to say that you wanted to warn him about her powers and chelsea who was thankfully not there. Aro smiled as he finished reading everything that had happened.
“Well, my dear may I see your hand?”
“Uhm sure I guess.” She went up and gave him her hand, without letting go aro asked
“I wonder if you could show us another facet of your gift.” You saw her smirk and aro let go laughing, “Afton would you come here please?”
You saw Felix cover his mouth with his hand and Demetri turned away to hide his smile. While hearing him scream would be entertaining, something told you that wasn’t what was about to happen.
Afton sighed knowing where this was going, y/n looked at him for a split second before he began scratching at his arms.
“What the hell is going on?” He began tearing off his cloak. Felix and Demetris mouths dropped. Janes eyes went wide. You didn’t try to hide the smirk creeping on your face. Afton continued to rip through his clothes before he ended on the floor.
“I’ll stop there. I’d rather not see him completely undress himself.” She said in her usual snarky tone.
“I think she will make a great addition to the group.” Caius smiled trying not to laugh.
Aro was giggling maniacally, “well my dear, I do hope you decide to stay with us.”
“Don’t see why not, it’s not like I have anywhere to go. Besides I’d like to get to know my mate some more.” Your heart felt like it was about to burst.
“Wonderful! Alec why don’t you take y/n to where she will be staying.” You realized neither of you had talked about where she would stay. You both looked at the ground. You’d both be blushing extremely hard if you were human, surely. You took a deep breath and offered your arm to y/n, which thankfully, she took.
When you got to your room, you felt like you had to apologize, “I’m sorry, I hadn’t thought about where you would stay.”
“It’s okay Alec. I hadn’t really thought about it either.”
“I can always stay somewhere else?”
“It’s your room Alec, if anyone is going to stay anywhere else I’ll do it. I really don’t care if we both stay there as long as you’re comfortable.”
“Okay. Do you need any more clothes or anything that would make you comfortable?”
“How do you guys even have money? I wouldn’t think of vampires flying in private planes.”
“We’ve been around long enough to collect things we can sell for a high profit. Aro also has managed to somehow get everyone into stocks and other kinds of investments. He hired someone to keep our digital footprint basically nonexistent.”
“Huh.”
The two of you stepped into your room. “Can I ask what you did to Afton?”
“Aro asked if I could show him more of my gift. So since he was still grabbing my hand I mentally asked him if there’s anyone he doesn’t particularly like. And then that guy came forward.” She paused for a moment, “you guys really don’t like him, huh?”
“Not necessarily no. He’s only here because he’s Chelsea’s mate and thats the only way she’ll stay.”
Her eyes went wide, “is chelsea going to be mad at me?”
“No, she’s not allowed to mess with anyone’s mate. Plus she’s scared of me and my sister anyway.”
“Why?”
“We just don’t have a great reputation here.” She didn’t push any farther. Just nodded and looked away from you. You felt bad. You didn’t want her to feel like she couldn’t come to you. She was your mate, if you don’t open up she won’t either and there nothing you want more than to get to know her. “Y/n?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you still want to know how I ended up here?”
“Of course. Are you okay with telling me?”
“I think so. I want to tell you, I really do want to know you more. I’m just not good with other people.”
She touched your arm and gave you small smile, “Alec seriously, if you aren’t ready you don’t have to. We’ve known eachother all of one day.”
“But I want to know more about you.” She seemed surprised at this, “I realize that it goes both ways. Would you like to sit?” She followed you to the small couch in your room, she sat with her legs to the side of her, she looked cute, you thought. You sat next to her, you hated this story. Jane was better at getting through it, it still bothered you.
“Alec do you always sit up that straight? Is that comfy?”
“Sorry. Just wondering where to start.” She waited for you to start, “you should know that around here my sister and I are known as the witch twins.”
15 questions, however many people
Tagged by @constantvigilante, and since my son is awake at four this morning, I’ve got time ;)
1. are you named after anyone? Yes! My first name is actually my great-uncle’s, but my mom saw a movie where it was used as a girl’s name, and she fell in love. My middle name is my grandmother’s first name.
2. when was the last time you cried? I literally just finished watching EXU: Calamity on Monday, and that was a solid, solid cry.
3. do you have kids? Yes! I have a little girl and a little boy.
4. do you use sarcasm? I used it way too much when I was a teenager, but I barely use it now that I’m a mom. Being a mom changed a lot of the way I communicate.
5. what’s the first thing you notice about people? I am always very aware of whether people are smiling. Living in the South, I’m used to people being friendly, but sometimes overly so, and eye contact with a big smile means they want to talk to me when I’m busy 🤣
6. what’s your eye color? Green
7. scary movies or happy endings? Listen, I get nightmares just from having accidentally seen a TRAILER from a horror movie.
8. any special talents? Shameless plug time! I write books for a living, and I am super proud of my Scaleshifter series.
9. where were you born? Utah, but we moved before I was old enough to remember living there, so I call Georgia home.
10. what are your hobbies? I love gaming in all its forms: board games, video games… I got to DM a DND game over Christmas and it was so fun!
11. do you have any pets? I’m horrifically afraid of dogs, and my sisters are allergic to cats, so I don’t have pets and probably never will.
12. what sports do you play/have played? I used to be really good at soccer but dropped out once I got to high school and it stopped being fun and started being only about winning.
13. how tall are you? 5′3
14. favorite subject in school? I liked my English classes when they were focused on language and writing (literature was meh… there were some genuinely disturbing assigned readings that made me dread class sometimes), but my real jam was history and government classes. I ended up majoring in political science because I love it so much!
15. dream job? I’m living it! I finally make enough from book royalties that I don’t need to freelance to cover bills (though I do work as a fact checker for the news on an extremely part-time basis). So I get to be in politics, write books, and be a stay-at-home mom. I love it!
Not tagging anyone specifically, but if you see this and wanna do it, go forth!
Bats Bugs and Boomerangs Chapter 1
A/N: Hey everyone, coming at you with another series! This is actually for a late secret santa gift exchange! My recipient was @m3owww! Her fandoms were Maribat and Avatar the Last Airbender, so I thought: Why not both? She already had a Maribat characters in the show type fic, so I created a fic where they watched the show. It slowly spiraled out of control though, so this is Chapter 1. I’ll eventually have the batfam (and Marinette) react to the whole series, so comment here and on ao3 what you want to see. So Phi, this is kinda like the gift that will keep on giving? Maybe? I hope you like it anyway. Enjoy!
Our story begins on a frosty winter evening, outside Gotham at Wayne Manor. Marinette sat in the library working on an assignment for her History of Fashion class. She was alone, because Damian, Dick, Tim, and Bruce were out on patrol, with Barbara on comms. Tikki, unless eating or involved with a transformation, spent her time sleeping due to the freezing weather. While the other Kwami either resided in the box or roamed the grounds, and generally stayed out of the human's way.
Marinette gazed out the window, snow falling softly through the air, covering the ground and the tree branches. A crackling fire warmed the room. She shifted, and a painful ache shot through her leg. Marinette glared at the offending appendage, which was the reason she wasn’t out with the team tonight.
Her Miraculous could cure any injury sustained on the battlefield, it didn’t help her one bit when it came to her own natural clumsiness. She hadn’t paid attention as she’d walked out of class one evening. The dim lighting hid a black ice patch and she slipped and fell. Thankfully, her ankle was only sprained and not broken, but she would be out of commission for at least two weeks. Probably more if Alfred got his way.
Speaking of the elderly butler, he strode into the room carrying a tray of tea and cookies.
“Good evening Miss. Marinette. Need another refreshment?”
She sighed at the cold coffee dregs in her mug. “That would be nice, thank you, Alfred.”
He hummed, grabbing a teacup, and pouring her a serving. “How does your leg feel today? I notice you were leaning heavily on Master Damian after supper.” He handed the cup to her and the warmth was a welcome sensation for her chilled hands.
“Yeah, he’s been nice helping me around.” Nice was a misnomer, more like extremely overprotective. He point-blank refused for her to stay at her own apartment, mostly due to its location on the fourth floor with no elevator access. He all but forced her to watch him pack her essentials to bring to the manor while she recovered. Since then, his attentiveness in ensuring she had what she needed within reach and helping her to class had grown. It was a tad smothering considering his usual aloofness, but she enjoyed his actions for the affection it implied.
“It’s throbbing and hot and feels worse than it did three days ago.” She took a tiny sip of the tea and relaxed into its spiced aroma. Alfred made the best tea.
He nodded. “It will feel uncomfortable for a while until it starts to mend. Just continue to rest and remain off it and you will be back to carousing around the city like the rest of them in no time.” He poured his own tea and seated himself in the plush armchair across from her spot on the couch.
“Oh, Alfred you say that as if you would not be right there along with us if age allowed,” said Marinette with a grin. The stories Dusu could recount about the elderly miraculous holder were nothing short of entertaining, and she knew damn well Alfred had the same need for action as the rest of the Waynes and their assorted allies.
“I’d do nothing of the sort,” he said primly, taking a sip of his tea to hide the tiny smirk on his face. Marinette couldn’t help but laugh.
The rest of the evening was spent in pleasant silence. Despite the pain in her leg Marinette pushed through it and finished her assignment, while Alfred read until it neared time when patrol ended. He bustled up the remains of the tea and promise her a fresh cup when he finished seeing everyone arrive safely.
Later, although she could not say how long, she was buried deep in a book and didn’t notice when Damian entered the room until he sat next to her on the couch.
“Good evening angel.” His hair flopped in his eyes, loose and damp from the shower. In his hands, he held a tray with two cups of steaming tea.
“Thanks.” She took the proffered cup of tea with a smile. “How was patrol?”
“Boring,” he sighed. “You certainly are not missing anything.” If he wouldn’t have taken offense to it, Marinette would have described the look on his face as a pout.
“What about the drug seller Tim tracked to the lower docks?”
Damian shrugged. “Gone silent after we busted the last shipment. Seventeen years in and maybe the criminals finally figured out committing crimes in the same city as a relentless vigilante team is a bad idea,” he said with a raised eyebrow and a smirk. Marinette couldn’t stop herself from giggling. It was a common joke among the family that Gotham’s criminals never learned.
“I think it means we’re doing our job right,” said Tim walking in with a steaming mug. Marinette opened her mouth, but he cut her off. “Don’t worry, it’s decaf.”
“Like Pennyworth would let him drink anything else this time of night,” scoffed Damian, while taking a sip of his tea.
“I’m perfectly capable of monitoring my own caffeine intake, thanks,” Tim said in offense, seating himself across from the couch in the reading chair previously abandoned by Alfred.
“No, you’re not,” called a voice from the hallway. Dick walked in with a large mug of what was undoubtedly hot chocolate. “The last time he didn’t check your drink after patrol, you used coffee instead of water to brew another pot, and then added four whole bottles of five-hour energy. You didn’t sleep for three days.”
“I also solved five crimes, figured out where the Penguin was hiding, and streamlined the dropbox submission system for Wayne Industries. Life requires tradeoffs.”
“No that’s just you, ignoring basic human necessities. Anyway, besides Tim’s caffeine addiction, what are we talking about?” asked Dick.
“The reason for the lack of crime,” offered Marinette.
Dick shrugged, “Happens every year because of the weather. Even criminals get cold. They’ll return to their usual transgressions once the weather warms.” He took a sip of his hot chocolate.
“Tt. Weak,” muttered Damian.
Tim rolled his eyes. “Not everyone receives extreme weather training under threat of dismemberment, demon brat. We should take the opportunity to enjoy the break.”
“Tim, your version of a “break” involves paperwork,” chided Dick.
“It’s not my fault the rest of you people don’t have lives. I’m a remarkably busy person. And what is this, the-criticize-Tim-hour?”
“Oh, only an hour?” smirked Damian. “I thought it was a continuous event, one could choose to participate in whenever the mood struck. I will have to file all my complaints immediately.”
Tim pouted. “Marinette,” he whined. “Can’t you control him?”
She shrugged, “What do you expect me to do? I’m his girlfriend, not his minder. Besides, they criticize because they care.” She laughed when all three boys snarled their noses at the prospect of feelings.
“Marinette, angel, please; never say that again. I criticize because I am right, and they should know it. Not because of any high-minded ideals such as genuine affection.”
“Okay, okay, enough,” said Dick. “If we have a bit of a break, we should do something! Together, as a family. I think Cass and Steph come back in two days.”
“Grayson, just because your girlfriend is off-world visiting family and you have nothing to do does not mean it holds true for the rest of us.”
“Exactly!” exclaimed Tim, “Except not quite, because I don’t have a girlfriend, but I just said I’m busy. R&D is rolling out a new prototype next week, and I have two board meetings scheduled and-”
“Not to mention,” Marinette cut Tim off. He could talk about his schedule forever because he just had that many events. “I can’t move around, what would we even do? Play games?”
Tim rolled his eyes. “The list of games officially banned in our family includes, but is not limited to; Monopoly, Uno, Checkers, Risk, Risk: Legacy, Twister, Jenga, Clue, Guess Who, Poker, Chess, and Go Fish.”
“Oh…” muttered Marinette.
“And that doesn’t even include videogames.”
“After the Wii Bowling incident of 2013, the media room wall was never the same,” Dick said, shaking his head in despair.
“I actually apologized for that, okay?” exclaimed Damian. “Why do you always have to bring it up?”
Marinette fully intended to ask about the incident later. “Okay, so games are out.”
“Ooh,” Dick’s eyes lit up, “How about we call a Family T.V. Event?”
Tim groaned, “The last time we did that we blew up the shed, and got the police called.”
“Well, we won’t watch a crime show.” Dick turned to Marinette. “Jason picked; we watched Breaking Bad.”
“I can see how that would spiral out of control.”
“The time before that, we set fire to the media room and started a familial feud,” Damian pointed out. “Game of Thrones,” he added when Marinette looked to him for clarification.
“Even worse.”
“Okay, fine, so we don’t have the best track record picking shows. But I swear I have a good one this time.” He paused for dramatic effect. “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
Tim snorted. “What? Like the kid’s show?”
Damian rolled his eyes. “Really Grayson, a cartoon? I know you are developmentally stuck at five, but not all of us are.”
“I’ve never watched it, but I’ve heard good things about it,” said Marinette. She knew there was a French translation of the show, but she preferred to watch media in its original language. Before moving to America, before dating Damian, her English had not been strong enough to confidently watch a show and understand all of it.
“Perfect!” exclaimed Dick. “I know you three and Cass haven’t seen it, and neither has Bruce or Alfred. I would bet Jason’s seen some of it, but I’ll have to check. Barbara and I have, but that’s fine, she loves the show. We’ll have to see about Steph too, but I’m sure she’ll enjoy it regardless. There are awesome characters, battles, suspense, comedy, and it’s not likely going to inspire us to blow up the shed or tear each other to pieces!”
“I have in no way agreed to this Grayson. Drake back me up.”
Tim paused for a moment, stuck between his need to disagree with Damian and the need to get out of Dick’s crazy plan. Unfortunately for Damian, the former won out. “Actually, you know what, a show could be fun. The episodes are what, thirty minutes? Shorter than Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.”
Damian groaned while Dick responded happily, ignoring his brother’s distress, “Around twenty minutes actually. We could have the whole show finished in about a week or so.”
Damian turned to her, eyes wide and hopeful. “Marinette, please tell me you are on my side?”
She patted her boyfriend’s arm, “Sorry, mon amour, I’m stuck either way. Might as well watch a show.”
Damian flopped against the couch with a pout. “Betrayed. I have been grievously betrayed by my own brothers and girlfriend. What is this world coming to?”
“Woo!” exclaimed Dick, a wide grin splitting his face. “This is going to be great.”
“This is going to be awful,” moaned Damian.
It took a bit of convincing on the part of Dick to get Bruce and Alfred to agree to the venture. Marinette, after learning the full details of the last two Family T.V. Events, was wholly unsurprised. She also did not know the full extent of what Dick did to get Jason to agree (apparently, he and Bruce were fighting, again, so this was expected.) although it probably involved a bribe. But by the week’s end, the entire family was together, all under strict orders (and puppy-dog eyes from Dick) to be on their best behavior.
Which, without a doubt, not a single one of them knew what that entailed.
The arguing started with seating placement, then about who controlled the remote, then over the distribution of snacks, drinks, blankets, and pillows. At one point Jason pulled a knife, which prompted Damian to pull his knife, suddenly Cass had two shurikens visible (where she even kept them while wearing a tank top and shorts, no one could say), and then everyone was yelling with sharp pointy objects in hand.
Once the argument was firmly under control, Alfred collected the weapons and placed them in a wicker basket, along with all the mobile devices, until the episodes for the night were finished. The only one allowed to have a phone was Barbara who was in charge of checking police scanners for any major trouble while the family took the evening off.
Marinette seated herself curled up against Damian on the edge of the couch. She set her foot propped up on an ottoman so it wouldn’t get jostled, and she could continue to ice it throughout the evening. Damian secured their own bowl of popcorn, so they didn’t have to share it with the others.
“Alright, here’s how we’re breaking this down,” announced Dick, who won the battle for the remote, and therefore the episode schedule. “The episodes are short, at least, much shorter than the last show we watched.” He directed a pointed look at Jason.
“I make no apologies.”
“We’ll watch half a season a day, ten episodes apiece. The closed captions will be on but try to keep the chatter to a minimum.” Marinette held back a laugh. Damian explained no one kept quiet during these nights. Watching the show wasn’t the point of these events; if that were the case then they would just watch it all on their own time. The point was the time spent together. This is why even Bruce, emotionally constipated and single-minded in his pursuits as he was, put away the suit for a few days to watch T.V. with the rest of his collected family. Talking was expected.
“We will, if you will,” called Stephanie.
“I take offense to that.”
“Aw just sit Dickie, let’s watch the show,” exclaimed Jason.
“Yes, Grayson you already wrapped us into this pointless venture; we might as well get it over with,” Damian grumbled. Marinette found his hand in the folds of their shared blanket and laced her fingers with his. He squeezed her hand, and, when he was sure no one else was looking gave her a small smile. Marinette smiled back, he pretended to be such a grouch, but deep down he was a giant softy at heart.
Dick frowned, saying “Fine, fine, you don’t have to be spoilsports about it.” And pointed the remote at the T.V. starting the first episode.
It didn’t take ten seconds before the commentary began.
“Four elements?” exclaimed Tim. “Are you serious? I could name at least a dozen off the top of my head. How are there only four nations? 0/10 completely unrealistic. Political infighting alone-”
“Ah, shut up, replacement.”
“Ruthless fire nation?” said Stephanie. “Methinks a little propaganda might be occurring here.”
“A hundred years!? What, has no one competent been born the entire time?”
Marinette shrugged. “The disadvantages of finite magic systems, Dami. It's learned indifference.”
“Honey, after a hundred years that’s not hoping, that’s naivety,” said Stephanie in response to Katara’s impassioned speech.
“She’s right!” exclaimed Dick.
“We know that, but she doesn’t.”
The show moved on to Katara and Sokka in a boat. Sokka held a spear above the water.
“Is he hunting that fish?” growled Damian.
“Ah yeah, I forgot you may hate the entirety of Sokka’s character,” said Dick with a grimace. “Whoops.”
“She’s not very good at the water moving, is she?” asked Marinette
“Waterbending,” Dick and Barbara said in unison.
Sokka chided Katara about her weird water magic. “Oh, he’s not going to be a dick for the whole show, is he?” asked Steph.
“He gets better.”
“They grew up here right?” asked Damian, as Katara and Sokka become caught in a rapid. “How did they not anticipate an event like this.”
“I knew I should have left you at home. Leave it to a girl to screw things up!”
“HEY!” shouted all the women in the room.
They watched as Katara’s fury built and broke the iceberg behind her.
“Good. Use anger, anger is alright,” Cass commented for the first time.
“Okay, you’ve gone from weird, to freakish.”
“This punk is just asking for a beating isn’t he,” growled Jason.
The beam of energy shot into the air after Katara and Sokka broke open the ice. “That’s not going to cause any trouble,” said Tim, rolling his eyes. “Nope, not suspicious or completely conspicuous at all.”
The scene switches to a metal ship.
“Finally! Uncle, do you realize what this means?”
“Oh, look, the bad guys,” deadpanned Tim. “I was right.”
Jason grabbed a handful of popcorn and shoved it into his mouth “What happened to his fucked-up fa-”
“YOU’LL FIND OUT!”
The scene switched back to Katara and Sokka. The figure is revealed to be a hyperactive little kid.
Damian frowned“Oh, I won’t like him either, will I Grayson?”
Dick tilted his head, “Eh.”
Then Appa is introduced.
“Father, could we-”
“No, Damian.”
They watched the children depart, and the scene moved back to the Fire Nation ship.
“Even if you're right, and the Avatar is alive, you won't find him. Your father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all tried and failed.”
“Well considering the Airbender child has been in an iceberg, it’s not surprising they failed.”
“Because their honor didn't hinge on the Avatar's capture. Mine does. This coward's hundred years in hiding are over.”
“Is it just me or does this angry, emo prince remind anyone of demon spawn?”
“Todd, shut your mouth before I remove your tongue.”
Marinette leaned in close, “Maybe just a little like you.” Damian looked at her with a betrayed pout.
The scene switched and they watched Aang lie to Katara about the Avatar.
“The air child is guilty. Will cause problems later.”
“Narrative Cass, it’s narrative.”
Damian scoffed. “Miscommunication is plot convenience, and it’s a sloppy one at that.”
They watched Aang’s dream of how he ended up in the iceberg, him waking up to Katara and his introduction to the village.
“Well, no one has seen an Airbender in a hundred years. We thought they were extinct until my granddaughter and grandson found you.”
“Extinct?”
“He went into the ice and woke up to find the world different. Anyone getting serious Captain America vibes here?” said Jason, tone-deaf to the clear horror on Aang's face.
“Jason, he just found out his people potentially went extinct!” chided Marinette.
“It's not for stabbing! It's for air bending.”
“Please tell me the main character is not a pacifist,” begged Damian.
“Well, he is a monk,” said Barbara with a sorry look.
“I sense he's filled with much wisdom,” Katara says as Aang sticks his tongue to his staff and it freezes.
“I switch back and forth between liking this girl and not. One second she’s got gumption, and the next she’s all starry-eyed and naïve,” grumbled Steph.
“I wonder who that reminds me of,” Damian whispered into Marinette’s ear. She felt her cheeks heat up.
"I'm not naive," she shot back.
He raised a hand with two fingers close but not touching, "You're a little naive." Marinette huffed, but silently admitted to her boyfriend's point. She had a tendency to believe the best in people; she saw it as a strength and appreciated it in this Katara character, but it was so far from how Damian viewed the world, it honestly confused his siblings when they first started dating.
Damian confided in her that he found it inspiring. She had been through so much, understood the cruelties of others, and still could see the good in people.
The scene switched to the Fire Nation ship again, and Iroh explained the concept of firebending to an irate Prince Zuko.
“Finally, a display of actual competence,” exclaimed Damian.
“Enough! I've been drilling this sequence all day. Teach me the next set! I'm more than ready!”
“My tutors would have skewered me if I dared to act in such a manner,” he commented again, softer than the first time. More so that only Marinette could hear. Damian’s family was more than aware of his childhood and what it entailed; Marinette slowly learned with comments like this. She squeezed his hand again and received a small smile.
The scene shifted back to the village where Sokka’s failed “warrior lesson” occurred, and then-
“We don't have time for fun and games with the War going on!”
“What war? What are you talking about?”
“Where have you been, frozen in ice for a hundred years?” joked Dick.
They watched Aang offer to take Katara to the North Pole to find a water bending master. The two children go and play with the penguin creatures, but the tone shifted when an old Fire Nation ship appeared on the screen.
“Bad ship” muttered Cass.
“If you want to be a bender, you have to let go of fear.”
“There are so many things wrong with that statement I don’t even know where to start,” said Tim.
They watch Aang and Katara enter the Fire Nation Ship and wander talking about the war.
“Aang, how long were you in that iceberg?”
“I don't know. A few days, maybe?”
“I think it was more like a hundred years!”
“Are you kidding me?” yelled Jason. “How are they just figuring this out now?”
On-screen Aang stepped on the line of wire, tripping the traps.
“Tt. Amateurs.”
"See, she told him it would be a bad idea!"
A flare rises through the air.
“That’s not going to cause any-”
“Oh, shut up Tim.”
The Fire Prince once again appeared on the screen.
“The last Airbender!”
“I was right,” he mumbled.
The screen faded to the credits, and Dick turned to the group.
“So? What do you think?”
“Slow.”
“Nobody has any sense.”
“Are any of the characters actually likable?”
He frowned. “Okay, okay, so the first episode isn’t the best. I swear it gets better. Back me up here Barb.”
Barbara nodded. “He’s right, it takes a few episodes to build the characters up and we see some genuine action. But by mid-season, I swear you’ll be hooked. And then we’ll get to season two and the best characters will arrive.”
“Hey,” Dick exclaimed, pointing a finger at her. “No spoilers.”
“I thought it was fun,” Marinette offered. “It’s very clearly a kid’s show, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.” She wasn’t going to say each and every person in the room had childhood traumas, and a show full of lighthearted fun was probably just what they needed. She could think it, but she wouldn’t say it.
“Thank you, Marinette,” said Dick with a smile.
“I rather enjoyed the elderly tea drinker,” intoned Alfred. “He’s more than he appears to be.”
“Uncle Iroh? Yeah, he’s the best!” commented Barbara. "But everyone is great."
“Alright, episode one finished, nine more to go.”
“Let’s hope it’s more enjoyable than the last,” uttered Damian, a chorus of agreement followed his statement, but when the show started up everyone grew quiet again.
Marinette was sure whatever happened next, it was bound to be interesting.
Little Kestrel (Part 12)[Birds of Different Feathers Series]
Fandom: Sanders Sides
Relationships: Logan & Patton & Virgil (future Virgil/Patton but not in this story)
Characters:
Main: Logan, Patton, Virgil
Appear: Thomas
Mentioned: Janus
Summary:
It was supposed to be a quick job either way. Either Virgil would assassinate King Thomas of Prijaznia or he’d be caught and get executed. Yet, when Virgil gets the wrong bedroom and gets caught by Prince Logan and his future royal advisor, Patton, the job ends up getting way more complicated for the 14-year-old. He also ends up sleeping in a (actually pretty comfortable) closet for a few weeks…
Notes: Implied/referenced child abuse, assassination attempt, knives, torture mentioned, captivity, teenagers being really dumb
This is a prequel to Kill Dear. I wrote it 100 words at a time on my blog, but this is the edited version. If you want to see how it was crafted, look at the tag proofread stories.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11
Logan needed to spend some time performing royal duties today which left Patton and Virgil alone after breakfast. Patton had started out trying to teach Virgil different board games. He’d seemed intrigued at first, but after a few games of checkers seemed to grow bored. Patton had gotten a blank stare when he’d asked if Virgil had any ideas about what to do for fun, so now he was trying to figure out something else they could do. He cast his eyes around at what Logan had in his bedroom.
“How about I read you a book?” he suggested.
Virgil seemed very intrigued by that idea. “Sure,” he said.
“Okay!” Patton said cheerfully. “He popped to his feet and glanced through the small shelf of fiction books Logan kept in his room. He decided to choose one of the lighter ones that Logan and he had liked to read when they were younger. “This one is called The Never-Ending Garden,” Patton said. “It’s about a group of four children and their adventures in a garden. It’s full of magic and adventure and friendship! Is that alright with you?”
“It sounds good,” Virgil answered.
Patton happily walked back over to sit next to him. “It is!” he said.
First, he showed Virgil the picture on the cover of a wild looking garden with four kids roaming through it. One of the children was in a little red wagon being pulled by another one wearing a fancy hat. One of the others was walking, looking at a map while the last had a wooden sword. After giving Virgil a couple of moments too look at the picture, Patton cracked it open.
“We start with Lydia’s perspective,” Patton said. “She’s one of my favorites!” He pointed to a picture of a girl in a raincoat at the beginning of the chapter and Virgil leaned slightly closer to see. Then, Patton cleared his throat.
“It had been raining that day,” Patton began, “but Lydia had been so very bored that she still begged her father to go out and play when the storm lightened into a sprinkle. He made her change out of the yellow dress she had been wearing into the one she often used to help him garden, as he knew she was certain to get herself muddy. Her younger brother Marcus asked if he could come too, and though part of her wanted to say no because she wanted to explore on her own without her baby brother slowing her down, her father had taught her to be a good big sister, so she agreed to let him come.”
Patton watched Virgil out of the corner of his eye as he read about Lydia meeting up with the neighbor boy, Al, and the three children starting to explore the garden in Lydia’s backyard. Virgil leaned in slightly to look at the pictures and listen to the story intently as the three children traveled deeper and deeper into the garden, but never made it to the back fence. They’d just made it to the part where they heard rustling behind the blackberry bush (which Patton knew was the last main character, Melly,) when Patton felt the need to adjust his posture a bit. Virgil moved in kind and ended up leaning further into Patton.
Without even really thinking about it, Patton brought his arm around to touch the top of his head. Virgil flinched the second Patton made content and Patton drew the hand away immediately. “Sorry,” he said with a wince. Patton was a naturally touching person and he’d been having trouble battling his instincts to cuddle everyone and everything while around Virgil, but he knew most touch was not welcome. The poor thing startled every time Patton went to touch him unannounced and even sometimes when he’d said something before doing it.
“I-it’s okay,” Virgil said. Patton gave him a tight lipped smiled and turned back to the book.
He stilled a second later when Virgil leaned back in and their shoulders brushed. He blinked over at him. “Oh,” he said softly. “Do… do you want me to touch your hair?”
Virgil curled up into himself a little bit but then nodded.
“Okay,” Patton said. “I’m going to put my arm around you and do that then, alright?” He drew upon his years and years of convincing easily startled cats to allow him to give them pats as he slowly moved his arm back to where it had been before and gently touched the side of his head. Virgil tensed, but didn’t startle this time, and so Patton gently ran his fingers through his hair a couple of times. Eventually, the tension bled out of him and he sort of slumped against Patton’s shoulder. Patton just barely stopped the coo bubbling at his lips before going back to reading. He continued to stroke the side of Virgil’s hair as he described the gang meeting up with Melly and them being told she was a fairy that lived in the garden.
He'd only gotten to the part about them finding the wagon when Virgil started to shift a bit uncomfortably, his neck craned at an awkward angle. Patton kept reading as he brought the hand in his hair down to his shoulder and pushed lightly. There was the slightest bit of resistance as Virgil didn’t know what he was trying to do, but then he allowed Patton to move him. Patton leaned back a bit and picked the book up off his lap before continuing to push him down. Virgil did not help at all, seeming confused about what was going on, but still going willingly enough.
Patton had to poke him around until he was on his back laying across Patton’s lap. He grinned down at the boy who was looking at him in blatant bewilderment and propped the book up on his chest. He held it there with one of his hands and stretched the other out to resume messing with his hair. Virgil relaxed into the new position after a few minutes of reading, eyes shutting as he enjoyed the attention. His eyes would flicker open every time Patton moved to show him a picture, but other than that, he seemed content to not move.
Eventually, he stopped responding when Patton moved to show him the pictures.
“Are you asleep?” he asked quietly. When he didn’t get a response, he bookmarked the page with last picture Virgil had responded to, and then continued reading to himself.
Eventually, there was a knock at the door. It was the one he and Logan had decided on to tell the other one that it was just them and not to panic when the door opened. The door opened to Logan a moment later.
He paused, taking in the sight of the assassin sprawled across Patton’s lap like a sleepy kitten. He shook his head fondly and walked over to them on silent feet. He bent and pressed a hand to the top of Virgil’s hand. Virgil stirred just barely, but didn’t open his eyes, pressing into the touch a bit.
Logan smiled. “He wanted to learn how to make protection charms today. I assume you’d like to join us?” Patton perked up and nodded happily, making Logan chuckle softly. “I will go set it up then. Would you like another book for the time being?”
“Just the one I was reading last night would be nice,” Patton said.
“Of course.” Logan stepped away to grab it and handed it to him. Then, he disappeared into his potion’s lab. Patton smiled down at Virgil’s sleeping face and settled the new book onto his chest to replace the children’s book. Virgil didn’t even stir.
