I love the kind of positivity that's like "I have no idea what it is that you do, but you seem to be very good at doing it".

Social media bans aren't about protecting kids
they're about control.
currently the UK has already put the ban in place, needing face id or a photo of an government id to access certain websites, including wikipedia and spotify, Australia is going to put their ban into place on December 10th and the US is considering it.
these bans have all been said to be about protecting kids, but instead of educating kids on internet safety, or offering support to parents to help keep kids safe online, they are banning social media, long with educational and important resources for women's reproductive health, addictions, SA, LGBTQ+, etc for people who haven't verified their age with third party verifcation systems.
as of writing this, Australia announced that youtube will be included in their ban, and in what I see as a way to get unbanned, they have now imposed a rule that ai with decide how old you are based on your watch history instead of the age you put in.
all of this is not going to protect kids for porn, or harmful media. kids still managed to get these things before the internet and they'll continue to do it.
this is an attempt to block us from getting information easily and accessibly, and make it far harder to find out about what they're trying to hide.
the ban has already block videos from gaza from people, and it will continue to block information about conflicts, politics and anything they decide we shouldn't know about.
the only way to stop this from happening is to speak up. get angry, protest, scream, cry, do whatever it takes to get their attention and say 'we're not going to put up for this'.
I personally can't organise a protest, or go to one. it's not something that's possible for me, but I'm hoping that by providing information and spreading awareness, we can hopefully get some resistance.
I do want to say that I struggled to find information about the UK ban for a reliable source as I don't live there, it's all from posts on here and on reddit, so if someone has more reliable/correct information for me, I would love to have access to it.
if you have any information about the bans, do feel free to send it to the ask box, knowledge is power here.
Let's try and stop this together
A post I've made on what you can do to stop the ban

Tags by @callmeenahfishmael: #friendship can be built online HOWEVER #you need people you can see in real life it is vitally important
We have this interesting situation where we basically no longer have privacy nor the expectation of privacy, but we also don't have community or meaningful connection with others, so we're all simultaneously both completely exposed and absolutely alone, and please understand that when I say this situation is "interesting", what I in fact mean is that it's "nightmarish and I wish I could wake up"

Red Hood Incorrect Quotes Pt 94
Jason: First day at Bat-Burger, I'm refusing to give anyone their food unless they answer my riddles.
[Later]
Jason: Got fired from Bat-Burger.
Roy: If I understand this correctly... Girl friends sleep together, bathe together, and even get to see each other naked.
Jason: ... We already do that.

I hate the internet, really social media's warping effect on what people think is important.
So take trans rights for a moment. The position right now of every Republican in elected office anywhere in America is "I want to personally feed all trans people into a wood chipper"
like even the most moderate, blue state, Republicans, your Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski are at best open to adults (which they'd define as over 21 or over 25) being allowed to (pay out of pocket) transition medically and legally (maybe) but certainly not to be protected from discrimination under the law no no no. Thats the liberal moderate Republican stand
the mainstream norm is in favor of banning all gender affirming medical care, banning legal changes of gender, they haven't figured out how to ban changing your name but they're working on it, and banning cross dressing. Thats what I'd say 90% of Republicans feel rn, 100% of them want to ban transition for minors, you're not gonna find a Republican who isn't in favor of that.
And all that gets 1/10000000th the attention of whenever a Democrat says something about sports.
like the former Sec of Transportation who is unemployed and has no power to do anything said something about fairness in sports before saying that really it should be left up to local communities and schools to figure out not a federal issue. That same week New Hampshire a state I used to live in and now live about an hour from passed a ban on trans minors getting medical care, This marks the first and only New England state to pass such a ban.
guess which thing was ALL! over social media? as the end of fucking days in the discourse.
it just feels like Republicans are gleefully rubbing their hands together supervillain laughing about how they're gonna destroy all trans people and everyone is like "meh, boring" and then we have a total melt down if some random Democrat who's out of office, about to be out of office or is a random red district Congressman says "this sports thing, idk, we do need to talk about it" like do I wish they'd shut the fuck up? yeah sure, but its like you sprayed your thumb and also got shot in the gut, you'd pay attention to the gun shot and not really notice your sprayed finger.
besides which like I can count every Democrat who's said something stupid on one hand. Which again reference what I said about how ALL Republicans all of them support radical trans suppression. So like idk if you like trans rights you should want more Democrats because even the most shitty one on trans rights is better than the most liberal Republican? And 99% of them are totally supportive of all the trans rights vs Republicans where 0% of them support all the trans rights.

Honestly, I think centering the discussion on parents here is somewhat misguided. There are lots of parents that you shouldn't really expect to do this, be it because they are only home to sleep, or they're plain irresponsible, or a hundred other things. The reasons vary, and some are more respectable that others, but the fact remains
There should probably be a proper system in place to make sure everyone is told what they need to be told. Something as simple as requiring the school administration to talk to the kids properly before issuing prohibitions could do some good in cases like the Power Ranger one described above
And if some things are so important and common they may warrant prohibition, there should be a proper system in place. More social workers and counselors, SexEd and stuff. We don't just have the parents teach kids that you probably shouldn't do crime generally and that traffic regulations are there for a reason, we (at least where I'm from) invite a police officer to school to talk to them. If it is truly important that kids learn about something, we should at least try to actually make sure that they do. That's what schools are for! Of course, the actual content and nature of these talks is bound to be contentious and may be plain old bad, but if religious fanatics don't stop us from teaching biology, if the inevitable ideological element doesn't stop us from teaching history, why should we stop at that?
TLDR: institutions are more reliable and predictable (though they may be reliably and predictably bad, of course) than individuals, including parents and caretakers
may be a hot take but i think the fact minors can access 18+ content by just clicking a button that says 'yes im totally over 18 trust me' is like. totally fine tbh. its a non-issue. i dont care if curious teenagers are looking at porn. they've been doing that for as long as porn has existed. id rather teens explore their sexuality through images on the internet than rush into real life experiences when they're not ready for it yknow. the UK is trying to put stricter age verification in place (which in turn is becoming an online privacy nightmare) and like. for what. who is it helping. why is this a problem.
