D.C. Beyoncé Impersonator Riley Knoxx Talks Being in Taylor Swift's Latest Music Video
Washington City Paper // by Elizabeth Tuten // June 21st 2019
Tumblr media
WCP: So how did you first get connected to Taylor Swift and the music video for “You Need to Calm Down?” Riley Knoxx: She basically went online looking for a Beyoncé impersonator, found my website, stalked my Instagram. She hand picked me. When Taylor was talking to me on set, she was like, “Thank you for telling your story,” and I was like, “You know my story?” and she was like, “Of course, I picked you.” She’d seen my videos, she’d read my NPR article, she knew it all. I told her that when they told me she’d picked me, I thought they meant her people had picked me, but no, it was really her.
WCP: How did you feel when you heard you’d been cast? RK: I was actually at Queeta’s Palace doing DreamGirls Twisted, doing Deena Jones. I was bouncing off the walls I was so happy. I couldn't tell anyone. Someone asked why I was so hyper and I was like “I can’t tell you but I gotta be in L.A. on Wednesday.” That was on a Sunday. Honestly I didn’t even know what I was supposed to be doing. We didn’t know if it was going to be negative, there’d just been that press about Taylor ripping off the marching band from Beyoncé. Luckily, it was positive. It was really positive.
WCP: What was the vibe like on set? RK: Taylor comes in, I turned around and she said “Hi” and I said “Hey” and she literally jumped in my arms. She sits on the couch and tells us, “I’m compared to all these pop stars, but of all the pop stars out there I’m most like Ed Sheeran, but nobody ever compares me to him, they want to compare me against these other women. So I want you girls here to represent that we’re all strong, fierce women." She was the most gracious, most kind person I’ve met in my life, not just celebrity. I totally had a different opinion of her before I met her. People say a lot of things. I mean she made a whole album about her reputation. In the media she’s painted as a mean girl, there are so many different controversies, Harry [Styles] and Kim Kardashian. But now, honestly if anyone tries to say anything bad about Taylor Swift to me, know I’ll be like “Eh! You don’t understand. This girl is amazing.”
WCP: You have so many Beyoncé costumes, most of which you design and sew yourself. How was the outfit you wore in the video selected? Was it one of your creations? RK: Yes, I make everything that I wear onstage. She had seen the NPR article with this turquoise outfit I hardly ever wear that’s a look of Beyoncé, they liked that, very sheer, very see through, so I brought that, the white one, and a gold and black one I wore in my last concert. So I had to take pictures in all of them and send them the night before in the hotel. I tried them all on, and they wanted the specific one, the turquoise one. But then I got to set, obviously the most elaborate one and the most memorable replica was the white costume from On The Run II [Tour in summer 2018]. So the director looks at it all while we’re in wardrobe, and someone’s like “Where’s the one that we requested?” and the director said no, that he wanted the most memorable one, that the white one was the best. So that’s how they selected it.
WCP: One criticism of the video is that it rips off Beyoncé’s video for “Party.” What do you think of the similarities, and do they seem intentional to you? RK: I never even heard that! Crazy. No! I don’t think so. I think it’s just a coincidence. Honestly the two videos are very different. I can see why people would say that, but I really don’t think that’s what Taylor is trying to do, I don’t think she’s trying to copy everything Beyoncé does.
WCP: What do you think of the criticism that the video puts a straight white woman at the center of the queer narrative? RK: She’s championed gay people many times, in other videos and things. It’s like, when you have a platform like that, who better to use it for than communities that have been underserved. It’s like, you have this platform, you have this voice, what do you want to say? Use that to do some good. You know, she said nothing, and they complained that she wasn’t being political enough. Now she’s saying something, and it’s “appropriating culture?” How? How is she appropriating culture? She’s trying to help. She’s saying, “These are all my friends, go follow them, go to their shows, stan them.” And she also has a petition for the Equality Act. It’s basically her lending her voice. There’s been tons of straight white women who’ve lent their voice - Madonna, Cher - you know other straight women who are gay icons. Why not Taylor?
WCP: What do you hope that people take away from “You Need to Calm Down?’ RK: Exactly that, that they need to calm down. Like she says, “Shade never made anybody less gay.” Protesting and doing all this crazy stuff won’t stop people from being gay, from being trans. Nobody ever saw a sign and said, “You know what, maybe I will stop being gay,” because someone came and picketed. You know, we live on this planet together, we all have to share, and you don’t have to like what we do, or who we are, but respect us as a community. This video will be iconic forever. Taylor even said to me, “This is the biggest video I’ll ever do.” And it’s probably the most important. It’s incorporating all queer culture. You don’t have to be gay to have the voice to help people; you’re an ally. She wants to be an ally, let her be an ally.
WCP: Where can we see you perform around D.C. this summer? RK: You can see me perform every Saturday and Sunday morning at Queeta’s Palace at Benning Road, you can get tickets at eventbrite.com. And I’ll be touring soon and doing concerts and I’ll announce all that soon on my Instagram page, @RileyKnoxx. Two x’s.

The Times Cher Showed the World How Witty She Can Be
Tumblr media
To this Date and Time, one can’t survive if he/she is not subtle same goes for the Music Industry Divas. Though Mariah Carey and Madonna have made the points much time that they are the shadiest being not afraid to word out their opinions for anything or anyone, none of both is as blatant and ruthless with their words as Cher the pop legend.
She topped the charts when she spoke out her disregard for Madonna on Ellen when she was asked who would she want to duel if provided the opportunity, she replied “Adele, Pink and … not Madonna.”
But that’s not the first time she has done that, this legacy of throwing shades goes way back. Here are some of the times when Cher Proved to world how witty she can be:
1.      The Start if the feud with Madonna
As we already have said Cher is the most subtle when giving out her opinion it is exactly what happened to start a feud between herself and Madonna. The things started when she commented this back in 1991 when asked what she thinks of Madonna, “She’s unbelievably creative because she’s not unbelievably talented,” she said. “She’s not beautiful, but she’s kind of … she’s creative, but she’s rude”
2. When She First Went to David Letterman Show:
Cher’s really is an outspoken person and when she was asked by the host David Letterman during his own show that what she thinks of coming to the show, she replied non hesitatingly, “I don’t know, I thought that I would never want to do this show with you,” when asked why she said she thinks he is “an asshole”.
Tumblr media
3. Her Opinions on Donald Trump
It’s not once that Cher has dissed Donald Trump but most memorable one was the “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” segment in James Corden’s Late night show. She was asked to say one good thing about Donald Trump and she said, “There’s nothing nice about him.”
4. Her Open Challenge to Britney Spears and J.Lo
When she went on her farewell tour in 2002 Cher made it clear that it was her last and that other stars like Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez will take the place of pop queen she is leaving vacant, she once said during a concert “Well, they’re not gonna take my place, but they’re gonna take somebody’s place.” Then she added to the fuel by saying, “I have a motive. And that is ... that I’m gonna make this show fabulous and say: ‘Follow this, you bitches.’”
5. Criticism on Miley’s 2013 VMA performance
After Miley’s Shocking performance at 2013’s MTV VMA, everyone was talking about her. But the estimation Cher made had its own lengths. She said, “If the chick had come out naked and done a great performance, doing the same things, I don’t care. I would’ve said, ‘Great, I’m behind you 100 percent.’” She didn’t mind these things rather her criticism was on the poor quality, “I don’t like the fact that it wasn’t good.”
6. Her Call on Michael Jackson’s Parenting Skills
Cher was not a big fan of Michael Jackson parenting skills and dished out her opinion in an interview with TV Guide back in 2003. She said, “He had this child rolled up in a blanket, and I was thinking, ‘What kind of life is this?’ I cannot imagine putting my children through what he put his children through” talking about the American Bandstand 50th anniversary, “I thought, ‘This guy is nuts. He shouldn’t have these children.’”
7. Her response to Amanda Bynes Twitter fret
Amanda Bynes, the former child star, was having a tough time in her career when she decided to vent her anger on Cher calling her “ugly” and “fat”. But when one of the fans asked Cher what’s her thought about Amanda she responded by saying, “Who’s that?”, that was all that was needed to make it clear how she deals haters.

Lady Gaga’s Enigma: Inside the outside.
"Music is essentialy twelve notes between any octave; all any artist can offer the world is how they see those twelve notes.."
Tumblr media
It's an understatement to say that Las Vegas is one of the most important cities for the music industry and entertainment, to the visitors it offers endless sources of multiple activities that take the daily routine and stressful daily life pressure away and bring lights, fun and even gambling to the table. But in this case, the city specially takes music performances and concerts to another level. For years, the streets of this city in Nevada kept in their hearts the talents of enormous and really iconic legends as Cher, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, (just to mention some of them) and made them look like they were a gem needed of perpetuation and admiration that attracted millions of followers to one single place. On an artistic way, we should consider Las Vegas residencies as a museum of the most emblematic artists that are not afraid to build a mind-blowing show that could easily overshadow their scene domination and vocals skills.
On March 2018 Lady Gaga made official her Las Vegas residency starting on December 2018 until late November 2019, with a total of 74 shows. As the name was published, 'Enigma' quickly created a hot burning fuss around her loyal fans and set the record straight on aiming to give a premium quality show. As months went by since the show announcement, Gaga flashed on social media a bunch of pictures and videos that were able to get into the followers minds and grow inside the seed of high expectations and enigmatic elements that would make the attendants gasp and ask for more. It was already clear that the main objective was already fulfilled: entertain. But the game-changing factor about preparing a full pop concert for months is to go further than the expected.
Tumblr media
It's really important to remember that music labels bet more than money on letting one of their artists sign an exclusivity contract with a single venue or hotel as Ceasar's Palace or MGM hotels when there are hundreds of safer reputation-linked options for an artist career. A residency is an ultimate risk: it could make a whole career that took years to be stablished among thousands of other singers or bands look like a forgotten artist ready to farewell, or add a priceless milestone to the ongoing performer.
Tumblr media
As the main doors for general admission opened at 9:00 pm on December 28th for the opening night, Gaga's crew had already made a fucking big statement by letting people witness a breath taking simple stage that could only make you wonder: What is this? in a good way. When you hear 'Gaga' you can think of a million ways to descrive her, but I think the most accurate and simple word to break her down is: crazyness. Which is not helping her at all. Even if she wanted to sit on a chair with brown hair and make everyone shiver on their seats with her un-taming vocals, everyone would be asking for more. Because we're at Park MGM in Las Vegas, you'll demand to make every penny spent on your ticket worth it.
The lights turned off and a flying- full of light and mirrored-suited Lady came down the ceiling with a keytar attached to her guts and her hands, ready to unbelt a nailed opening track: Just Dance, followed by general public recognized bangers as Poker Face and LoveGame. At this point you already owe money to the backstage work made to wow you. The perfectly fitted outfit, the theme-according electric blue wig that remains flawless through original choreographies, and the sassy-attitude dancers beg for more than your attention, your live-experiences passion.
Tumblr media
As the 'Venus' performer quickly changed her look from weave to heels, a set of fan-favorite hits were about to play. 'Dance In The Dark' refilled the fan base's hunger with a live perfomance of a song that she didn't sing since her 'Monster Ball Tour' on 2010; full of energy and obscene pop dance moves Gaga gave her little monsters the flashback moment of the night. As 'Beautiful, Dirty, Rich' and 'The Fame' blasted the speakers for a 5,000 crowd, the attendants were singing along to memorable non-single lyrics but the critics went to the doubt point as wondering if they were a wise choice to include on the setlist, which personally I think it wasn't.
Tumblr media
With only 5 studio albums, an original soundtrack and 21 official singles, it gets complicated to dismiss songs that most of the people awaits and include long-time forgotten and underestimated tunes to bring a spin to the expected. 'Telephone' made the cut by closing the second act of the show while 'Applause' got to open the next one with no big excitement along. Choices.
The whole 2 hour show is narrated and story-told by 'Enigma' a digital high technology character that interacts with Gaga through the interludes and give an unnecesary story to the experience. As we know, the thin line between giving meaning to a concert's concept and making it hard to understand, was crossed with Gaga's abduction into another kind of paralel universe. When alienated Gaga is flying on a metal orbit above the crowd while singing Paparazzi we couldn't help but to enjoy the obligated awaited song and ask for more. But then, it happened.
Tumblr media
The awkwardness swallowed the crowd into Gaga's versatility as writer, singer and performer while she sang an epic performance of ARTPOP's opening track Aura while her black-leather corset pushed her vocals and body moves to her finest. '..Enigma pop star is fun..', right?
Nobody asked, but she gave us anyway a recipe for jaw-drops: First, get back on stage while riding a metal-aracnic robot. Second, play a fake-german non-single for your most loyal fans: 'Scheisse'. And last but not least, rock a metalic and futuristic styled outfit that lights up your boobs while you command everyone to dance and sing their lungs out. Period. And, as a hardcore pop enviroment was flotating in the air, 'Judas' started playing hitting the high notes and a violent role-play for almost 4 minutes. For the third song of the act production could have wrote *Madness* on the setlist instead of spelling the track's title 'Government Hooker'. At the end of the segment comes a cover of David Bowie's 'I'm Afraid Of Americans' as a friendly reminder of two essential Lady Gaga's components: legends as inspiration and a political message hidden underneath colossal synths.
Tumblr media
I will always stay true to the belief that when you have an integral timeless pop hit as 'The Edge of Glory' or 'Alejandro' all you need to do is sing and dance your talents off and you'll get to a most memorable moment on the attendant's memories than a full of props-already expected performance. The MGM Park venue bowed down to sing along the piano chords fully live played by Gaga while perfoming 'Million Reasons' and 'Yoü and I' with the tender and notorious comfort that she gives to every note just to achieve a moment of recognition that bleeds vocal maturity and passion.
Tumblr media
The night was almost done when a latex-styled, blue-wiged and fearless Gaga performed her 10-year career anthems. 'Bad Romance' set the room on fire with an explosion of pop mixed with nostalgia just by standing alone underneath a bright light dancing it's iconic choreography that's been kept on our minds through the years. You don't need to be a fan to recognize that those dance moves were born with the melodies and brutal lyrics that made this tune a hymn. The encore wouldn't be as satisfying if she didn't put 'Born This Way' at this precise moment to remind once again that she's come a long way by staying true to her beliefs and fighting for them.
Tumblr media
The last song threw us out off the deep end while Gaga performed 'Shallow' along a black simple shirt that belongs to her first moments on the industry and a squicky-clean-mirrored piano to reach the already legendary high note that everyone can now sing to make your emotions shiver and open your senses to a melody that will now, last forever.
Just as her versatility and mind-blowing open-hearted talent, there is no conclussion here. Enigma takes all the little things you expect it to be and bury them on the heated Vegas floor to make you understand that you just witnessed a well-thought show built around 21 songs that tell a story and make a statement that this is not retirement show, but instead, a big moment on the entertainment history in a city where anything can happen.

ABBA intend to release new music in 2020
Tumblr media
ABBA are gearing up to release new music later this year, their first recordings in over three decades. Longtime member Benny Andersson revealed the plans in a new interview, as NME points out.
“They’re coming,” Andersson told ABBA Talk of the group’s forthcoming recordings, believed to be at least five new songs in total. “They’re coming this year. I’m guessing after the summer.”
The Swedish pop icons reunited in 2018 to record new music, with hopes of putting it out into the world soon after. Their intended schedule has been delayed a number of times since then, however, partly because of technical issues. Acknowledging the numerous postponements, ABBA Talk asked whether Andersson could actually commit to a 2020 release date.
“One shouldn’t promise anything,” he cautiously replied, “but if I were to decide myself, it would be September.” The 73-year-old Stockholm native added, “I can’t make that decision alone. But that’s what we’re aiming for.”
Andersson’s promising update follows a similar one made by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph in September 2019, Ulvaeus said, “I won’t promise any date, but next year is when you get to hear the new songs.”
An ABBA hologram tour was originally announced around the same time as their reunion two years ago, but much like their new music, it’s repeatedly been delayed. The band’s last album of original material, The Visitors, came out way, way back in 1981.
If you’re craving Swedish pop bangers and can’t wait until the summer, Cher is actually heading out on tour this spring behind her ABBA covers album, Dancing Queen. You can grab concert tickets here.

The Chemical Brothers follow the release of their hugely acclaimed ninth album No Geography with the announcement of their biggest ever UK headline show, stopping at The O2 on Saturday 30 November 2019.
Support on the band’s November tour comes from very special guests James Holroyd and 2ManyDJs. Prior to those shows, The Chemical Brothers release a new single and announce the release of a special deluxe edition their classic third album.
Eve Of Destruction is the opening track on No Geography and has been a staple of the band’s DJ sets for the last two years. A relentless groove that gives way to a jacking house chorus, it features vocals from Norwegian singer Aurora and Japanese rapper Nene. The single is released ahead of their headline slot at Glastonbury Festival this month; a stunning visual for the track has been created by the band’s long term collaborators Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall.

Dem Rep. Swalwell: ‘Swalwell-Biden’ Is a Possible 2020 Ticket
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thursday on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) said he was “open to entertaining” the possibility of the Swalwell-Biden 2020 ticket. Pop artist Cher told ITK Sunday that Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) or Swalwell should run with former Vice President Joe Biden. Blitzer asked, “Are you prepared to run in 2020 as either a presidential or a vice president presidential candidate?” Swalwell replied, “Or Swalwell-Biden, Wolf. I’m open to entertaining both variations. And I was actually as a fan of Cher, and my mom has been to many of her concerts, my mom was just thrilled. I think [READ MORE HERE]

Shania Twain set to party again in Vegas with new residency
youtube
NEW YORK — Since Shania Twain launched her first residency in Las Vegas seven years ago, Sin City has been invaded with contemporary pop stars, from Lady Gaga to Drake to Christina Aguilera, jumping on the residency trend. Even Cardi B has plans for a short-term Vegas residency this year.
“I know! What are these people (doing) jumping on my bandwagon?” a smiling Twain said as she announced her return to Vegas for a new residency, starting Dec. 6. “Everybody knows that Vegas is awesome and it’s only getting better.”
Twain, of course, follows in the footsteps of other Las Vegas stalwarts over the decades, from the Rat Pack and Wayne Newton to Cher and Celine Dion.
On Monday, the queen of country pop announced 23 performances for her “Let’s Go!” residency at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Tickets go on sale Friday.
Britney Spears, Bruno Mars, Mariah Carey, Calvin Harris, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Aeromsith, Boyz II Men, Pitbull, Gwen Stefani and Backstreet Boys are just some of the acts who have bombarded Vegas with long and short-term residencies since Twain wrapped her first two-year stint in 2014.
“Not everybody gets invited to do a residency and certainly not a long-term residency. It’s one thing to go and do six shows or something like that, but when you’re in a long-term residency, it’s a commitment,” she said. “A really big commitment.”
After Vegas, Twain went on traditional tours — in 2015 and 2018 — but said there’s a plus side to performing at the same venue every night.
“You can really take advantage of the highest standard technology that is usually too sensitive to take on the road and travel. You can’t pack it up and take it down every day. So it’s a production dream, Las Vegas,” she said.
“And also, it’s just great for my voice to be able to be stabilized in an environment that I can control. And I really appreciate that these days with all my Lyme disease voice issues.”
Twain trained with coaches and worked extensively to rebuild her voice after she contracted Lyme disease. After 15 years, she finally released an album, 2017’s “Now.”
To keep her voice intact in Vegas’ dry heat, the 53-year-old said she will “take a steam shower every night as I start my warmups before the show.”
One of the best-selling artists of all-time, with hits like “You’re Still the One,” ”From This Moment On” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” Twain has the title of creative director for the residency. She said she wants the audience to party alongside her each night.
“It (will be) like a giant nightclub,” she said. “I’m actually going to put a dance floor on the stage so there’ll be some fun audience participation.”
“I’ve got so many fans that in the ’90s were 3, 4 or 5 years old and now they’re graduating from college — they’ve got that to celebrate,” she added. “Or they’re maybe getting married now, and they’re bringing their parents to my shows these days, so it’s just a great party vibe.”
Some of those young fans — the Canadian Women’s Soccer Team — went viral last week when they sang Twain’s late ’90s hit “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” on a bus traveling to a game.
Twain said she was moved and “personally very touched” when she watched the clip, which she retweeted.
“That’s a good example of young adults that probably came to my concerts years ago on their parent’s shoulders, and now they’re in championship leagues and starting professional careers of their own,” she said.
“Like, I know with touring, whole teams would come to the show. It’s rowdy and you get a whole team of girls coming and singing along. … It’s what I’m really writing the show around — let’s get together and let our hair down and shake it out.”

J.M.S.
Les Têtes d’affiche des Déferlantes Vendredi 5 juillet : -M- , Bigflo & Oli, Jain, Delgrès, Dadju, Feder, Samedi 6 juillet : ZZ Top, Patrick Bruel, Zaz, Boulevard des Airs, La Pietà Dimanche 7 juillet : B-52s, Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson, Iam, Nekfeu, Therapie Taxi, Gringe, Didirri Lundi 8 juillet : Thirty seconds to Mars, Macklemore, Aya Nakamura, John Butler Trio, Dionysos, Trust, Raggasonic…
