Kazutora's POV:
I stood in front of the judge as he looked through my list of felonies. He was shaking his head as he pinched the bridge of his nose. I can tell he hated giving minors a long sentence and I felt so guilty. I honestly deserved everything I have coming. I have made so many mistakes in my life, and I was only 15. The world would be better if I wasn’t here, the last mistake I made was killing my closest friend who stuck by my side for years. That was starting to eat me up, and I felt sick. 
“I will sentence you to 10 years at Tokyo Detention Center for Juveniles. If you break even one rule your sentence will be extended. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes sir,”
“You will also be required to join a support group program, starting today. I expect you to do every activity they tell you. Dismissed.” I was led out of the courtroom and placed on a bus that was full of troublemakers like me. Though I doubt their sentence was as long as mine. Hell, it’s not long enough. 
I leaned my head against the window as I waited for us to arrive. It wasn’t long before we arrived, leaving the bus in an orderly fashion. When it was my turn to get off I was led inside and provided a schedule.
“These are your schedules every day. Nothing changes on the weekends, accept your classes.” One of the officers yelled at us and I looked over mine. Pretty mundane. 
5:30 AM Wake up
6:00 AM Breakfast
7:00 AM Scrub their apartan dormitories
8:30 AM Classes (Math, Art, History, Geography)
11:00 AM Recreational time

We were handed our grey uniforms and instructed to change immediately. I did as I was told, thoughts on nothing but my past mistakes. Once we changed, I was instructed to go straight to my support group. I folded the paper in my pocket and was led to the room by another officer. It was a silent walk, which only left me to my devilish thoughts. I walked in and all eyes fell on me. I looked around before the officer spoke. 
“Ms. Fujioka, you have a new one. He will be under you for the next 10 years.” 
I heard someone whistle, knowing it was one of the other inmates and she nodded her head. 
“Alright, please take your seat in one of the free chairs. Why not introduce yourself?” She asked after the guard left. I sat down away from everyone and looked around before looking at her. 
“My name is Kazutora Hanemiya… I am 15 years old, and I am here for~a lot of things.” I mumbled looking down. 
“Well, I won’t force you to talk about it right now… but I do want you to acknowledge what you have done. Maybe written on paper, and explain what you think were the leading factors.” I nodded my head and she smiled before turning back to everyone. 
“You came in at the perfect timing…” 
“What do you mean?” I asked confused and the guy nodded his head towards Ms. Fujioka. 
“As I was saying, we are trying something new out. We know, that people your age don’t want to talk with people older than you. So we thought, as a way to open up about your life and to still keep you connected to the outside world, we are going to be doing a pen pal kind of deal. Now it’s not always going to be someone in Japan. We work with so many schools across the world. So they may be somewhere overseas. They will have your profiles, no pictures just a name, age, and birthday. If they choose you, we will let you know. And will probably receive your first letter within a few weeks. Sometimes, longer maybe sooner. Any questions?”
“So, we have no idea who we are writing?” One person asked, and I leaned against my hand. I was slightly interested but I doubt I would have been chosen. I sigh softly as she spoke again.
“Nope, unless they send a picture you will have no idea. You are the first group we have decided to try this with. So it’s a test run, if it works then we will be keeping it in place. If not we will go back to our boring lectures as we did before.”
“So, that means we won’t have to deal with lectures during this period?” The guy next to me asked and she shook her head.
“Nope, but you will be telling me what you learned about your person. I hope you guys get letters soon. For anyone who doesn’t get a letter, we will keep your file open for other schools to eventually choose from. Kazutora, if you have any questions do let me know. You can spend the rest of this session, writing your small essay.”
“Yes, Ma’am.” She got up and walked to the other inmates, and the one beside me ended up talking. 
“My name is Sato Toshiaki, but people call me Toshi. Been here for a couple of years now.” 
“Oh, nice to meet you…I guess.” 
“No need to be cold might as well make friends while you are here. Since you will be here for 10 years.” 
“Yeah, I guess. Honestly, should be here longer.” 
“Well, the way I see it. You know what you did was fucked up, so that’s the first step. According to Ms. Fujioka, so might as well accept it.”
“Mm, I guess…” I mumbled as I worked on my essay. It was quiet for the rest of the session. 
The day had gone by so fast, that I didn’t even realize it was time for bed. Turned out I was stuck with Toshi, who talks a lot. When it was time for the lights to go out, I lay in bed staring at the top bunk. I didn’t realize how exhausted I was but after the day I had, it was a given I would be tired. Yet I could barely sleep because of the events, between Baji’s death, and the fight with Toman, Mikey, Mikey’s brother. Everything. It was becoming too much for me to handle.

My tips on scoring 95%+ in your class 10 boards
This can be general exam tips for any kind of exam, but these are specific learnings I got through studying for my cbse class 10 boards.
First off a lil intro- I got 482/500 in my boards w a 98 in science, math and social studies. I’m actually pretty proud of my performance and I will say that a lot of hard work has been done to get to this point.
Let’s start off with some general tips
- think of every single chapter test/internal examination in your school as if it is the final board exam. Push to give your best. Go the extra mile. Trust me it makes a lot of difference.
- Be 100% thorough with your ncert textbooks. Do not slack off on this because book back questions for science and math are really important.
- Understand and analyse the mistakes you make in your internal exams. I’d recommend keeping a small notebook where you mention and note down the mistakes you’ve made. You can understand your shortcomings and focus on those parts.
- Plan your days properly especially when you get study holidays. Don’t waste your time, and ensure you study the subjects you’re weak in.
- I don’t have any particular tips for languages other than doing a LOT of writing practice because the most common way to loose mark in second languages (be it anything) is spelling mistakes.
- Past year papers are your best friend.
Math
- RD Sharma’s math guide book was a literal life saver. I finished almost every problem there and don’t worry you’re going to have a lot of time to do it.
- Practice, practice and more practice. Math was probably the trickiest subject and spent most of my time on it.
- Write every single step down. Scoring in cbse depends on step marks. So understand the marking scheme for every type of question. Write formulas down, write your assumption for x, write down your entire thought process. Imagine your explaining a certain sum to a kid and present it that way.
- Time your practice tests. Every single one of my classmates struggled with this. Make sure you spend only a certain amount of time for certain section and move on fast. My usual way of attempting the paper was in this particular order:
1. 1 marks - 15 mins
2. 4 marks- 50 mins
3. 3 marks- 50 mins
4. 2 marks - 30 mins
The rest to check and attempt sums I may have left because I didn’t know at first.
- don’t slack off on math. Spend your free time on this and it will pay off. After you understand the concepts properly math will get really easy. 10th grade math is easier than 9th grade if I’m being honest.
-Optional exercise is a scam. I repeat, a scam. Your teacher will force you to do it, just buckle up and do it. I can’t say it’s absolutely important but it definitely enhances concept understanding.
- After you get a hang of all the concepts, practice ncert exemplar because it challenges your brain to apply concepts you’ve already learnt in a higher level.
- Look through past papers to note what kind of questions are being asked for 4 marks and other higher level questions. After practising a lot you’ll notice a pattern and you’ll pretty much be able to predict the questions.
Science
- I used Arihant All in one guide for science and let me tell you that is a lifesaver.
- in text and book back questions are really important.
- For science, exemplar questions are more important than in math and will definitely be asked. Practice them.
- Write your long answers in bullet points esp for biology.
- I made a booklet of questions for myself. (For Chem and bio) It’s really useful to review in the last min. Writing down questions helps you to understand the concept from multiple perspectives.
- Please please make sure you completely understand the concepts in physics especially. Don’t try to memorise, questions will not be direct.
- I used khan academy to learn most of my physics and it was really well explained. Other YouTube teachers deserve a round of applause for how much they’ve saved my ass.
- I also used S Chand’s guidebook a little because it explains the concepts from the very beginning as if you’re a toddler. Very helpful to gain better understanding but not necessary at all.
- Do not forget to practice the diagrams in bio.
Social studies
- this is such an exhausting subject. So much theory 😫
- I used Arihant All in one for this too. Using this CLEARLY gave me an advantage over my peers. 100% will recommend. Using the guidebook gave me structured answers and access to previous years questions.
- History is pretty interesting for the most part. Understand the years and flow of events. Note down the main points of every single subtopic because any random sub topic can be asked as a question.
- Making/drawing Graphic organisers is helpful to arrange your thoughts.
- Write key words down.
- Geography(I hated it) was pretty tiring. after reading the chapter once you’ll get a hang of the key ideas and main questions that can come. There’s nothing tricky in that.
- Repeat and write down main points in geography tho. Because the only hard part is to retain all the information. Make sure you study everything because data orientated one mark question will be asked.
- Democratic politics was an easy part too. I literally studied most of it from the guide book. The basic advice applies here.
- For economics- read every book and corner of your textbook. because since it has such little content, anything can be asked and you can easily loose your marks in the 1 mark section.
- Please practice map a lot of times. I’ll repeat it- a LOT of times. This is where most students loose marks. Look at the list of maps given on the cbse website, and practice according to that.
Hope you get a lot of studying and practice done because this is a tough year. It is really easy to emerge victorious and all one needs is dedication. You need to make sure you give your best. Please try not to compare yourself to others( I know it is hard). Devote your time properly. Hope this helped you and all the best!

Words from a so-far successful archaeologist (25 years old/recent Ph.D. admit)
Hello Everyone!  I have revived my Tumblr to find many messages asking “what do I do next” when it comes to Archaeology/Anthropology. So I thought I’d create a post explaining what I went through to get to where I am now, and hopefully give some information to those who are pondering on the next steps to take in this truly wonderful field of study.  Quick academic about me: 
Undergrad: Ivy League, Major: Anthropology-Geography, Minor: Religion
After Undergrad: 1 year of Cultural Resource Management (CRM) & Substitute teaching
Graduate School: England MSc in Archaeological Information Systems
After Graduate: 10-month long research grant in Cambodia
Now: (USA)  Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology, Archaeology Track
I come from a low-middle class family, all of my academics have been funded through financial aid or through grants that I’ve applied for. A lot of the time school and research can get expensive, but that doesn’t mean you have to be wealthy to pursue it!

I’ll set this up based on the various landmarks of my academic career: 
1. Undergrad
Themes: Ask for help, build your resume, write down everything
No matter where you are going to school, it is so so so important to use the resources around you. Becoming a professor is HARD work, and each one of your professors went through a lot to be able to stand in front of you and teach you. They’ve likely had years and years of research experience, which is probably still happening behind the scenes of teaching and grading papers. More often than not, professors want to help you, they want students to be excited about the research they’ve worked so hard on, and they want to do what they can to help you achieve your career goals.  Therefore, if there’s a class you’ve taken or a professor whose research you’re interested in, tell them. This is how I got my first experience with archaeology (before I even knew that I wanted to do archaeology). I randomly took an Anthropology class that sounded cool, and after the first class, I was like WOW I love this topic so much and I really want to know more about it. I went up to the professor that was teaching it, told her I was really interested and asked if she knew of any research opportunities available. She then hired me as a student researcher in her lab to do data entry for one of her archaeological projects in Mesoamerica, and after working for her for a few months, she asked me if I wanted to go with her and her team to Mexico for fieldwork. 
         (my timeline at this point: 19 years old, end of Sophomore year)
From this experience, I learned how to apply to grants within the University and funding outside of the University, and was able to FULLY fund my research experience in Mexico. During this fieldwork, I got to work with 3000-year-old artifacts, do archaeoillustration, and eventually got my own chapter published in the book that my professor wrote about the research that was done.
After I got back from Mexico, I started exploring archaeology further. A new professor entered the department who specialized in “digital archaeology,” and his research involved tracking looting patters in Syria using satellite imagery. I thought this was crazy so I then went up to him and asked if I could help him with his research. (the common theme throughout this entire process is just asking for help). From this experience, I learned that I loved the possibilities that technology brought to the study of archaeology, everything from 3D modeling to identification of sites in satellite imagery to spatial mapping in GIS. With this professor, I was able to form an “internship” with him, and continued doing that and other minor projects within the department. I ended up modifying my major to incorporate coursework from the Geography department and created my own “Digital Archaeology” major.
        (my timeline at this point: 22 years old, Senior year)
As graduation began to creep closer, I had been able to get a good amount of lines on my resume. I had:
research assistant/ data entry
fieldwork in mesoamerica
x2 internships with digital archaeology prof
multiple “small” projects around the department i.e. making posters, painting 3D prints of bones,
all of the coursework I had done on GIS/ relevant digital experience
started a drone club at my school (it flopped, but it still counts as a line on the resume!)
All of these lines became useful when starting to think of jobs and the “next step”
UNDERGRAD HIGHLIGHTS & TAKEAWAYS:
Ask for help, your professors are there for a reason, it will almost always lead you to new opportunities. These relationships last well beyond your graduation and definitely come in handy later, make it count!
Write down EVERYTHING that you do. Did you help out with a conference? Write it down. Did you do a couple hours of data entry? Write it down.
Follow your leads! I started my anth journey in Mesoamerica and ended my undergrad in Near Easter digital archaeology (and I entered college wanting to do astronomy?). Change is natural, let it happen.  
2. Gap Year Between Undergrad and Grad School
Highlights: Job applications, field school, CRM, uncertainty
Something that I was always told during my undergrad was that you really need to do a field school and some CRM to be taken seriously post-grad. This shows that you actually want to be an archaeologist outside of the classroom environment. Field Schools and CRM give you valuable experience such as: excavation methodology, report writing, grant applications, teamwork, leadership, etc. 
I started applying for jobs probably about 5 months before I graduated and ended up securing a job at a CRM company in LA. They liked how much I had done during my undergrad, but they really wanted me to have a field school under my belt before I started working for them. Because I had already graduated and didn’t need course credit, I was able to do my field school at a discounted price (these things really do get expensive, and this was a difference of about $2k). I think this worked out in my favor waiting until the summer after I graduated because it saved me a lot of money in the end. 
After my field school was done, I started work that September in CRM. This job ended up being nothing like what I thought it would be, to be honest. I was an Archaeological Field Technician that was part-time/on-call, meaning I only got work when they needed someone to go monitor a construction site. I only got work once every month, sometimes every couple of months, so I was making hardly any money. I realized this quickly and decided to become a substitute teacher to supplement the CRM job. I HIGHLY recommend doing this if you end up in the same situation. Not only does subbing fill up all of your non-working days, but it also gives you the flexibility to choose when you can work and gives you teaching experience that you can put on your resume. That CRM experience can be really important, so it’s good to stick it out long enough to quit.
      Why didn’t I like CRM? For me, my job was very sparse, included driving long hours to a construction site, sitting there all day in case archaeological material popped up, and then driving home. Sometimes it was just walking back and forth across a massive field full of cow poop looking for arrowheads, and often it felt like I was just clearing land so that a big building could be erected. I was really missing the research component to all of it. The pay was also not great. 
GAP YEAR HIGHLIGHTS AND TAKEAWAYS:
What I got from this year was very valuable, even though it wasn’t necessarily that fun, however. 
I got the experience I needed in CRM
I got some teaching experience (also volunteered to mentor clubs and research at local high schools during this time)
I started doing some networking (I found some alumni that were doing work that I wanted to be doing and reached out to them)
and most importantly, I realized that I really do love school and wanted to go back for my Masters
So I started looking into Masters's programs. This is kind of a scary thing especially in the US because school is expensive. I still really wanted to do Digital Archaeology, and I couldn’t find a single program in the US had a focus in this topic, and especially couldn’t find one that I was willing to pay for. 
The UK, however, had plenty of Digital Archaeology programs, and the programs were only a year long and a fraction of the price in the US. I decided to take a chance and apply, got in, and then suddenly I was moving to England. (in hindsight I really didn’t spend much time at all making this decision, but it worked out in the end). 
3. Masters Program
         (my timeline at this point: 23-24 years old)
I chose the program I applied to based on its focus on the techniques that I wanted to use, namely, remote sensing, GIS, and 3D modeling. I really wanted a degree qualification that spoke for itself, and therefore applied for an MSc in “Archaeological Information Systems.” 
I had done some networking during my gap year and connected with an alumnus who was doing research in Cambodia using digital methods, and she offered me the opportunity to join her fieldwork. I agreed to join her in Cambodia during my degree, and also applied for a research grant for the year following my master's degree to continue fieldwork in Cambodia. 
I used this opportunity to fuel my dissertation topic and focused all of my writing and coursework throughout my grad school experience around Cambodia. While I was surrounded by people studying Roman architecture and Medieval Studies, I spent my time doing independent work and building a network in Cambodia. 
This program was a great experience for the most part, I was surrounded by beautiful medieval architecture and had a great community throughout. I personally didn’t really like the UK school system compared to what I had received in the US, however. This was largely because of the way coursework was set up. (If you want to know more just DM me).
MASTERS HIGHLIGHTS AND TAKEAWAYS:
Follow networking opportunities, and find someone doing what you want to do (or close to it) and let them help you take the steps to get there
If you’re going to do grad school, do it in something you know you love. Don’t waste money on a program that isn’t right for you.
Make sure that the program you apply to allows for flexibility so that you can do research on what YOU want, not what THEY want.
Halfway through my Master's degree, I received word that I had been accepted for the research grant (Fulbright) and would spend the next year living in Cambodia doing independent research.
4. Gap Year Between Masters Program and PhD
If you’re planning on a Ph.D., I think its a really good idea to do something before applying that relates to what you want to be studying. This shows that you’re dedicated to your research and to a life in academia, and have the ability to produce something from your work. 
My master's degree was nice because 1) it was short, only a year-long, and 2) allowed me to focus research on what I was interested in. This gave me the experience I needed to lead into a year of independent research.
This year of independent research was definitely contingent on receiving the grant in the first place, and I think that I would have started job searching again had I not received it. However, the small things I did leading up to applying for it really helped in qualifying me to receive it. 
     I had:
All of the undergraduate research experience
CRM experience
teaching experience
fieldwork experience
a master’s degree that focused on the region 
established a network of people in the country beforehand
a couple “publications” from fieldwork 
This grant fully funds me living in Cambodia, and has allowed me to participate in cultural exchange with some amazing people here in addition to allowing me to partake in archaeological fieldwork across the country. 
Again, I cannot stress enough how important it is to network. If you like something, find someone else who likes the same thing, send them an email.
Networking got me my experience in Mesoamerica, Digital Archaeology, my CRM job, my research experience in Cambodia, and so so much more. All because I sent that first email.
5. PhD Applications
I applied to 1 school. I got in. Its a really good school. I’m still in shock. 
However, I think I really did set myself up for success in this one. 
The biggest advice I can give in the world of Academia is:
NETWORK
Talking to people who have gone through what you’re going through are the BEST help. They can mentor you through these experiences, offer you new opportunities, or lead you in the direction of someone else who can help.
PLAN AHEAD (but be open to change)
Okay, so you’re applying to grad school. What do you want to focus on while you’re there? What do you want to do with the degree when you’re done? Do you want to start working? Do you want to do more research? What opportunities are out there for research funding? What is the job market looking for? Is there anyone in my network that can help me get there?
None of these have to be concrete plans, they just have to exist in some shape or form so that you have the ability to latch on to one when the opportunity arises.
If you’re doing something that you love doing, you’ll find a way to make it happen. All opportunity comes from the amount of effort you put into getting it! Thanks for reading and best of luck on your studies! Also Happy Anthropology Day! :)  -Lyss

“Laverne and Shirley” Theory: Billy Kane is Norman Hughes
...Or, at least, Billy Kane is Norman Hughes undercover.
Okay, so I managed to get my hands on the first of the three "Laverne and Shirley" novels-- "Teamwork". (I'm still waiting for the other two to arrive in the post). I'm pretty sure they're non-canon to the actual show, but I'd like to propose a theory that may or may not also explain several in-show oddities.
Much like everything I become interested in, I tend to attach myself to one particular character (a couple of examples: Vaati for "The Minish Cap", Shut for "Go! Princess PreCure", or Jack Spicer for "Xiaolin Showdown"). When it comes to "Laverne and Shirley", I (naturally) attached myself to Officer Norman Hughes.

So, when I was reading the book, imagine my disappointment when I noticed that Hughes wasn't in it. ...Or, was he?
There was a particular character that caught my attention. Billy Kane. And the more he showed up in the story, the more my mind came up with quite the bewildering theory.
Billy Kane is Norman Hughes in-disguise. Here's why I thought so:
1. Kane is described rather close to how Hughes looks Skipping past the part describing where he and Laverne are standing, on Page 77, it goes, "...hands in pockets, was a medium-sized young man of twenty-eight. He had red hair and was wearing a black pullover and black slacks. His tennis shoes were black, too."
You may argue that "red hair" is definitely NOT Hughes (Hughes actually has brown hair), but the book is a bit inaccurate in places; including not only getting Lenny's last name, Kosnowski, wrong ("Kowalski" is used on Page 14), but Laverne's hair is ALSO-- arguably-- incorrectly called "auburn" and not blond on Page 5!
But, the other points seem to be fitting. "Medium-sized", to me at least, seems to be another way to say "chubby": the way Hughes was consistently described in the show! The ages match as well. Like Hughes, Kane's supposed to be around Laverne's age because a weird age-gap was never mentioned anywhere for either of them. And a rather small thing that's probably a coincidence: the laced shoes. The reason I even mention this is because Hughes wears black oxfords-- there's even the joke about how he would have died if he had bent over to tie his shoe when Laverne hit him with the car in "Drive! She Said".
2. Both are into detective work In fact, Kane calls himself "the house detective" on Page 77. And the very first thing Hughes does in "Fakeout at the Stakeout" was gather information and help Laverne and Shirley hide out and try and find the Milwaukee Masher so that they could get their stolen clothes back!
3. Both incessantly use Laverne's name Okay, this one's a stretch, but this is legitimately something you can make a drinking game out of. In the show, take a drink every time Hughes says Laverne's name. I can tell you right now, if you tried it with "Drive! She Said", you'll probably die because he says it EIGHT TIMES in the span of about three minutes. Meanwhile, at one point, Kane has said "Laverne" FOUR times within two pages of eachother (Pages 80 and 81). Very Hughes-like, I would say.
4. Both don't like guns As stated on Page 77 for Kane ("Actually, I'm not certain I even want a gun. All sorts of accidents can happen with guns; they're worse than bathtubs."). This is a weird one: what cop doesn't use a gun? ...Um... Hughes. Yes, Hughes HAS a gun with him at all times, but he's never shown using it-- choosing instead to rely on a truncheon (as seen in "Two of Our Weirdos Are Missing"). Hold on. No, I'm not forgetting the cop in "Dog Day Blind Dates", who uses a gun and is played by the same actor as Hughes. Here's why I'm still saying he never uses a gun: that cop in "DDBD" was never actually stated to be Norman Hughes.
In fact, in "D!SS", there's even the bit where Hughes said that he attended "Pistol Orientation"-- a class that teaches gun safety. Since he was already well-established to be a cop, that either means that it's some sort of reoccurring class that just refreshes minds, or he has some problem with guns that he needed to take classes for (which, again, would explain the truncheon in "TOOWAM").
5. "Billy Kane" could easily be a stage-name Or an "undercover" name. Which would explain why Laverne was so proud about figuring out that Hughes's full name was "Norman Morton Hughes" in "Fakeout at the Stakeout".
6. There's an odd tid-bit about not being recognised On Page 90, Kane makes a comment about how he thinks he and Laverne can afford to go snooping around to find Shirley at the Ritz Diamond, BECAUSE, "Sure, I don't believe they'll recognise either one of us". This seems to imply that either he's not from around Lake Watanabe (like how Laverne is) or he's in disguise.
7. Kane has a few things in common with Hughes's real-life actor The absolute comedic genius that is Bo Kaprall played Norman Hughes. Why do I bring this up? Well, like Billy Kane in-novel, Bo Kaprall started off as a comedian.
Both of their names have the same initials-- BK. And they both appear to go by nicknames, as presumably "Billy" is short for "William" like how "Bo" is short for "Robert".
8. Both keep information written on notepads As seen on Page 101 for Kane and "TOOWAM" for Hughes. Although, Kane keeps his tucked inside his sweater and Hughes keeps his in his back pants pocket.
9. Both don't exactly think things through Kane quite randomly gets captured by the same mob that kidnapped Shirley-- on Page 124, it even specifies, "Letting Roscoe jump him out in the woods, that was stupid". In "The Obstacle Course", Hughes (and Laverne) automatically assume that Shirley was voh-de-oh-doh'ing with Carmine while they were gone-- and when they discover that they were wrong, Hughes loudly declares, "I feel STUPID!"
10. Both try to save the day, but technically fail at it Kane attempts to distract the mob with a comedy bit so that our heroes can take them down and escape, but it's Lenny and Squiggy barrelling through the walls with their truck (don't ask) that saves everyone. Meanwhile, Hughes puts in a request for a public defender for Laverne when she winds up in jail in "Guilty Until Proven Not Innocent", but it's Shirley taking the guy who accused Laverne of stealing out to dinner that leads to her release!
11. Both are polite/nice and calm/composed Kane knocks and waits for Laverne to get ready on Page 89, and even starts off just calling her "Miss DeFazio" until she straight-up tells him to call her "Laverne" (back on Page 80). He only even remotely gets frustrated when his escape plan fails on Page 134. Then, Hughes repeatedly says "sorry" and "please" when trying to get everyone out of the apartment so he can discuss the case with Laverne alone in "Two of Our Weirdos Are Missing". And the only time I can think of that he got angry was when he got ran over in "Drive! She Said".
12. Both are (probably) not from Milwaukee Because, going off of information I have yet to mention from the final chapter, Kane comes DOWN to Milwaukee... And if I'm understanding the geography correctly-- since Lake Watanabe is still in Wisconsin (Laverne says this on Page 57), and must be ABOVE Milwaukee... And because Lenny and Squiggy's instructions include crossing something called the Owl Creek Bridge (Page 128)... This most likely places Lake Watanabe somewhere in Wood County, Wisconsin-- which just-so happens to have an Owl Creek.

And assuming that Kane was either born there or had moved there, this is similar to how Hughes was originally from Chicago and then moved to Detroit before somehow winding up in Milwaukee (as Laverne pointed out in "FOATSO"). So, technically, both travel a lot.
13. Both have a thing for Laverne And they fall for her quite quickly, too.
Kane is already calling her "pretty" by Page 91 (after having only been around since Page 77) and Hughes is laughing at her jokes and calling her "funny" within five minutes of their meeting in "Fakeout at the Stakeout". Of course, Laverne ends up dating Hughes no less than five times in-show (as mentioned in "D!SS") and Kane asks Laverne out on Page 142 (and arguably, them eating breakfast together back on Pages 92-93 could be seen as a date).
They both also like having their dates on weekends. Page 142 for Kane; “FOATSO” for Hughes.
14. Both have a thing for humour Kane was a comedian and Hughes said that he likes to "laugh at life" like Laverne does ("FOATSO"). Kane's escape plan involved a comedy routine, while Hughes still tried to joke about Laverne's reckless driving ("D!SS").
15. Kane is described as if he's important And what I mean by this is, all the other novel-original characters, whether they be plot-relevant (like the mobsters) or random bystanders (like the ticket taker or door greeter), are just described with-- at most-- a sentence, like "he's the taller one" or "the knight". However, Kane is described in-detail twice; once when he's introduced on Page 77 and again when he changes his outfit on Page 89. This is a trait that he strangely shares... WITH THE MAIN CHARACTERS. Why put so much emphasis on him unless he was an important character... ...Just like our dear Officer Hughes?
...So, yeah. Is Billy Kane actually Norman Hughes in-disguise? I have no idea- but I'd like to think so. If anything, maybe this could be a weird headcanon.
If something in the second or third novels disprove this in any way, please tell me. I haven't read them yet.

Chapter 1: About Social Science

Ah! Social science! The subject I hated the most. I don’t know why, but I felt I was born to hate the subject. It was my destiny to hate it. Or something like that. But the teachers, oh Holmes, they were always so good that I always felt that, at least, I should study it for them. I believe that I always got the best of teachers available for Social Science. There are many interesting incidents related to the subject, especially during the 10th standard, when I was studying it for the last time.
To begin with, the most “ancient” incident which I can remember is during 7th standard. Well, we did not have only 1 S.Sc teachers that year. At first, the honour of teaching S.Sc to 7th D went to Dr. NSA (neither National Security Advisor nor National Security Agency). She had a PhD in Geography. I mean, how can a person be so tolerant, so as to complete a PhD in Geography. Come on, it’s not a joke, doing PhD and stuff like that.Well, after our Principal changed (Yes, our Principal also changed that same year. We’ll talk about her in later posts), she went through the qualifications of all the teachers. After going through the qualifications of Dr NSA, and she thought, “thodi padhi likhi hai, chalo isko 11th aur 12th class padhane ko de do.”   (She is a little bit educated, let her teach 11th and 12th standard).
Yes, thodi (a little). These were the exact words used by Dr. NSA when I asked her about this thing three years later, in 10th standard, when she had come to our class for an arrangement period.
Well, returning back to 7th class. After our summer vacations, our time-table was changed, as were many of our teachers.
Our new social science teacher was Ms R. Whatever she taught for the next two months is a mystery. Yes, it remained a mystery until I studied the chapters myself. Well, the thing was that she was pregnant, and was to deliver her baby in September, and hence she had to complete our syllabus in the next two months only. Now she didn’t teach us the chapters from the book, but made us write ‘Questions & Answers’ in our notebooks (after all, these Q-As were going to come in the exam), and explained the chapters in a comprehensive manner.
Here I would like to mention a small anecdote of class seventh Summative Assessment 1. Just before the social science exam, I fell ill. I literally cried a lot the night before the exam. It’s was not that I had not studied at all, but I had not been able to complete my syllabus, especially geography. Also, I couldn’t read my SSc book, which is a crucial thing to do before an SSc exam. The next day, in the examination hall, when we all were studying, I told some of my friends about my “grievances”. They comforted me about the exam and I told them, quite honestly, that I was not expecting to score above 80 out of 90 marks.
The exam paper came. Questions were quite ridiculous. Yes, they are always ridiculous for someone who does not know the answers. I specially remember one particular question. Perhaps the circumstances presented by the question will not be amiss here.
Q. What do you think about Delhi as the capital of India?

Thinking: Here is a gentle question of an irritating type. Clearly, a tough question then. It has just come from the tropics, for it is written in dark ink, and that is not the natural tint of its text, for majority of the paper is white. He has undergone hardship and sickness, as his haggard kind of questioning says clearly. His right hand has been injured. He holds it in a stiff and unnatural manner: bent like (?). Where in the tropics could a Social Science question written in English have seen much hardship and got its arm wounded? Clearly in India. The whole train of thought did not occupy a second. I then remarked I did not know the answer to the question.
(for those who haven’t read Sherlock Holmes, it is an excerpt from “A Study in Scarlet”).

I then proceeded to answer as follows:
Ans.
    The genuine part:
Delhi is the capital of India. It was named capital of India 1911 by King George of England.
It’s  area is about 4000 km2.
(I knew this because I had sometime checked it. Actually there was an article in the newspaper about good sci-fi movies and one movie involved a spaceship which had a diameter of 500 Km. I wanted to check whether this ship was bigger than Delhi or not)
Now the funny part:
It is a union territory.
But since it has a large population, it should now be made a state.
It has many tourist spots.
These are the points I could make out from my memory. Now, when I went to my bus, I took out ‘The Book of SSc’ and checked in the chapter ‘The State Government’ for the answer. It was there, a full-fledged, five marker answer; legitimate, elaborate, and complete. I repented about not reading the book, but alas, nothing could be done to stop the nature, or rather the answer sheet, from taking it course. I decided to let it go.
When the answer sheets were being distributed for reviewing by the students, I got really disheartened about how much I would have scored. Surprisingly I had scored 86 out of 90 marks. I couldn’t believe my eyes. When I set out to see how the hell that happened, for the first time in my life, I came across the true face of examination-checking in India. You can yourself calculate. I had a completely wrong answer to the above question, so I lost five marks, plus numerous small mistakes. Overall the totalling came out to be around 82 marks or so. I told our teacher about it. She took the paper and kept in the bundle, and said she would look to it. But I never got to know what happened to that. Oh! I forgot to introduce the new S.S. teacher that had come by then. She was Ms P. She was a 2008 pass-out from our school only, and had come to teach us now.
Ms R was a brilliant teacher. By brilliant, I mean literally a brilliant teacher. She had a unique way of teaching. Also, since she was not much older than us, she gave mouth thrashing answer to the misbehaviour of the mischievous children of our class. No, she did not use abusive language, but her subtle words were embarrassing enough.
Our eighth standard teacher was equally brilliant, Ms JS (not NodeJs or AngularJs). But she was quite serious, rather too serious, specially for a funny class like ours.
Ah! Finally the good tales begin. So here it goes. I was promoted to 9th-A, a Sanskrit section. Our S.Sc teacher was Mrs. LL. The funny thing was that she was actually known by this name, LL. At first some of my seniors told me that she is really a good teacher. But believe me, she wasn’t. She specialized in History, and consequently did not know how to teach other subjects. Trust me, she was really awful at Geography. She never completed her sentences, sought to teach only through presentations on smart board, made us write questions, but never clearly told us what the answers were. Here is a sample:
Well, you know, a piece from Indo-Australian plate came and stuck with our land, you know. (Making a collision kind of gesture through her hands). And then, you know….

Alas, we never knew. Now after completing three chapters in Geography and one in Economics, many children thought that they had had enough of her. They started a campaign. They wrote a letter addressing our in-charge to change our S.S. teacher because the current one was not good. Believe me, out of 48 students in the class, 33 signed. Of course, I didn’t, because I didn’t like to take part in such anti-teacher proceedings, because you never know what turn it might take on in future. The letter was sent twice. When Mrs LL came to know about this, she used to sarcastically remark on children yawning or talking in her class that
“Class mein sunna nahin hai, aur phir jab samajh nahin aata to pohunch jaate teacher change karvaane.”
(Don’t listen in the class, and when you don’t understand, you just go on trying to change the teacher.)

Well, our SSc teacher changed after summer vacations. It was Ms SL (not S.L. Loney, you dumb math enthusiasts).

She was a great teacher. Believe me. (Of course, you don’t have any other choice).
There is a particularly interesting incident related to Ms SL, which shows….. , well, nothing. As it happened, she was the mother of VM. I had known him for some time. But the major angle in this story is that he was a friend of some other students in our class.(No, he wasn’t my friend. I don’t make such friends). Going on, there was this chapter on ‘Peasants and Farmers’ in History. The marking for question and answers was going to start from the next day. But this VM told HT and PG that his mother was going to Goa the next day. As was expected from a friend, they believed him, and they did not bring their History books with them.
IN THE CLASS
Culprits: Ma’am, VM told us that you had gone to Goa. So we didn’t bring our books.
Executioner: Just think, if I had gone to Goa, wouldn’t I have taken VM with me?
I suppose silence will be good enough for the rest of the scene. Nothing happened. They were allowed to sit in the class, and as I had to go out of the class for some reason, I gave them my book.
Overall class 9th was the best class with reference to the horrid subject of Social Science.
And at last, here comes the best class of all.
Behold...
The Class 10th .
Now this year our teacher was the veteran teacher, the most senior one in the school at that time, Mrs SS1. She was quite good towards me in the starting of the year. But then I started taking some days off the school. I used to ask a lot of questions in her class. So did others. When the first Unit Test (UT) was held, she gave quite a scolding to our class, and told the class (and I felt she was staring towards me) not to disturb her while she was teaching  and ask the doubts later in the corridor. She felt her syllabus got behind the schedule because of this (which of course was not true). She said all this because we had performed  poorly in the UT.

Now there are numerous small insignificant incidents involving me and her, but let us just shift towards the best ones for the sake of your interest in keeping reading this chapter.
She had grown quite hostile towards me (I mean she used to be quite irritated by me). We used to have 2 UTs in each ‘Term’ (we used to have 2 ‘Terms’ in a year) out of which the better one would be considered for the final result. As a consequence, I had studied only for the first UT in the second term and had scored quite well in that exam. This exam used to be of 30 marks. During the second UT I did not study at all. Probably I just gave a small reading to the chapter. It was “Nationalist Movement in Indo-China”. It is one of the worst chapters in 10th class History textbook (THE WORST ONE was “Print Culture and the Modern World”).

I scored 23 out 30. I was actually quite shocked to see that I had score this much. But SS1 ma’am was not happy at all. I got quite a something we Indian students call as lecture. Then of course there was TM. He was just like me. He left no chance of pulling the leg of other students. At that time he was acting as what we call as “ghee in havan”.
He says, “Ma’am, he did not study because he had scored very well in the previous one and he knows only the better one will considered.” I looked at him like this.

And there you go. A little more lines of taunt, and finally I was released.
Now we also had a revision test. It went terribly bad. Again I had not studied for it as it was not going to be considered for the final result. The day I gave this test, RB1 (another student in my class) had some work with SS1 ma’am. It was probably mid-day. M1 sir (a fine-arts teacher) was present in the class. He asked me to take him to ma’am. I was walking casually. I tried not to look at RB1 as I disliked him very much. I went straight into the staff room. SS1 ma’am was sitting there checking papers! Well I did not quite observe it at first. But there was the bundle on her table on one side and there was a paper turned upside down in front of her with her signatures in the end. It meant that that paper had been checked quite recently. I raised my neck to see whose paper was it. Holy Holmes! It was my paper. How could I have such an ill-luck.

Well, SS1 ma’am started talking to RB1, and I said to myself, “bhag le beta yahan se” (run off from this place, you scum).
I crept out quite stealthily, but alas, as I was just going to open the door, I heard a sound saying “_____” in a stretched manner. I turned. No doubt I was being called for my execution. And then I was given quite a lecture again on me not studying Social Science. But there was Ms MM1 sitting there alongside SS1 ma’am. She asked me what was I planning to take in 11th, and when I told I was going to take science, she patted me and said to SS1 ma’am while laughing “chhod de na yaar ise” (leave him dear). Well I promised her that I will study for the finals sincerely.
(Note: Ms MM1 taught chemistry to 11th and 12th class, and  I didn’t know back then she would be my Chemistry teacher in 12th class. It’s not good to talk of her here, she deserves one whole chapter herself.)
Our school used to organise a “havan” for 10th leaving students before the finals. After the havan, our teachers used to shower us with flower petals as a form of blessing. When SS1 ma’am came, she threw the flowers forcefully at me while yelling “sabse ganda paper kiya hai tune _______” (you have performed the worst in the paper). Of course that wasn’t true. I was bad, but I was not that bad. Everyone started laughing, but, BG ma’am  (our class teacher back then) heard that. And the glare she gave me! I would never forget those eyes. Well I assured her that I would perform well in the finals.
There were some more incidents which took prior to the above mentioned one, though they were less humorous. Once SS1 ma’am was teaching the chapter “Print Culture And Media”. There was a section about scribes who used to copy the books in “beautiful handwriting”. Well, I asked ma’am from where the scribes got their copies from. And there you go. Again I was terribly mocked by her. Whenever I was absent (yes, never when I was present in the class), she used to say in the class “Chalo achcha hua aaj _____ nahin aaya. Itne faaltu saval poochhta hai ki ma’am suraj east se kyun nikalta hai, ya fir hum breakfast subah hi kyun karte hain”, (it’s good that _____ is not present today. He asks such stupid questions like why does the sun rise from the east, or why do we have breakfast in the morning only), though I certainly never asked such questions.
Once SS1 ma’am asked our class who would like to explain the chapter “Transportation” to the class. NB1 (one of my best and oldest friend) raised his hand. He came in front of the class and started explaining the chapter. I and my friends left no chance of pulling each other’s legs.  I repeatedly asked NB1 questions which were quite irritating. Well, he answered them. Then ma’am stopped him and asked someone else to continue where NB1 had left. I went there. I started explaining the chapter now. Now, it was NB1’s chance. He stared putting questions to me. After answering some questions, I felt quite irritated (add to that not knowing the answers), I yelled at him to sit down, and asked him to come to me after the class to take his doubts, and told him harshly that I had to complete my syllabus. (The funny thing here is that SS1 ma’am used to say the same lines whenever she got irritated by the questions, but the difference is that she used to know the answers). Everyone enjoyed this thing, including SS1 ma’am. She said to me “very good beta. Jaa baith jaa” (very good child, now go and sit down).
I did not have Social Sciences as my subject in higher classes (thank God!). Although I used to meet all the teachers now and then. SS1 ma’am retired from her job after that academic year, though she kept visiting the school because of her Rotoract-club duties. Once our class was in the basement for our Computer Science practical, and there she was! I don’t know why, but nostalgia overpowers me whenever I see someone I haven’t seen in a long time. So there we (I and RM1) to go and greet her. Our CS teacher NA1 also came out of her lab and they hugged (apparently they were friends!). SS1 ma’am says to NA1, “Sabse achchhe bachche the meri class ke. Bade pyaare bachche hain!” (they were the best students of my class. They are just lovely kids). And I thought “Oh really???? Oh reallyyyyy??? Why didn’t you never said this in class?”

I Liked Fates Before It Was Cool!: Birthright Part 1
Prologue
Opening Chapters
Chapters 6-11, in which Hoshido’s military is extremely disorganized and only regroups because the mere idea of Ryoma is just that awesome.

Not much to say here. Corrin tells Xander they’re siding with Hoshido against Garon and implores him to do the same, Xander accuses them of being brainwashed and, after repeated refusals, tries to kill Corrin. Following this is a chapter that will probably be finished during the first enemy phase unless Ryoma gets really unlucky. I suppose it makes sense that this is the shortest of the three versions of Chapter 6 as Corrin went to the border already with the Hoshidans. While it’s kind of neat that all the Hoshidan royals are playable on this map as a bit of a preview, note that this is the fourth of just seven chapters in which Ryoma has appeared as a unit prior to his formal recruitment. We get it already, the guy’s an OP powerhouse and a clear favorite of the writers.
This is also where I should probably bring up My Castle, but I don’t have much to say here as it was never a feature I particularly enjoyed. Other FEs have addressed the concept of a base for your army integrated into gameplay far better than this. Genealogy and the Tellius games and others may not let you perv on your units taking a bath or disgust them with your horrendous cooking, but what does that really add to the experience? I know, I know, a bunch of small and scattered stat boosts....

Oh, silly banter in the middle of an attack while surrounded by wounded and dying soldiers. Never change, FE. But seriously, even if he’s just Cordelia with a dick whose semen produces more Cordelias let’s take the time to appreciate that Subaki is the series’s first playable male pegasus knight. Fates’s take on classes is actually very egalitarian, a fact that often gets lost in its sea of fanservice and subtle story-enforced misogyny and everything about <insert character whose gender/sexuality-related presentation offends you most>. Moving on.
I’m still not entirely clear what happens to the Hoshidan army between this chapter and the preceding one. They really appear to just break ranks and scatter: Corrin and co. go fool around in the astral plane with Lilith, Ryoma and Takumi lead some of their forces toward Izumo (why?), no one cares about Hinoka, and Sakura retreats here to Fort Jinya to tend to the wounded at a makeshift military hospital. It makes sense that the Hoshidan army wouldn’t have the strictest organization thanks to their years of protection under Mikoto’s barrier, but the problem is the game never tells us that and we’re left to infer these things based on the events of the next few chapters.
The Nohrians meanwhile are still on the offensive, but they screwed up by sending Silas’s unit to attack the fort. Silas has an unhealthy attachment to Corrin that frankly rivals Camilla’s, and his abrupt defection here because he wants to hang out with his partially amnesiac BFF undoubtedly bodes ill for anyone associated with him when news of it reaches Nohr. I guess it’s cute in my case that Silas’s obsession with Corrin knows no gender, but the guy probably steals underwear to sniff. Saizo is entirely justified in being suspicious of him.

Oh yeah, I forgot all about this chapter. Mozu’s just not as memorably meme-worthy as Donnel, and recruiting her is less frustrating since you’re not forced to make her poke things in her joining chapter. It does make the Faceless seem like more of a threat to Hoshido, although as a consequence playing through this paralogue in Conquest always feels a little weird. This plus the first Castle Invasion were mostly for EXP and support farming. For anyone wondering, I’m going to be keeping most of my characters in their default class sets since I don’t feel like grinding skills or anything elaborate like that. Also, I’m playing on Normal, so I’ve got a lot of latitude in how I play which is how I prefer FE anyway.

Hinoka sums up my feelings on her and her retainers. Azama’s got some amusing lines and if I knew more about Buddhism his...interesting take on philosophy would probably be even funnier, but that’s about it. And yeah, Hinoka really just does pop onto the scene with no explanation except that she’s also trailing her brothers and I guess everyone really did forget about her. Sucks to be a late development addition.
Iago tosses the conflict ball to ensure the party’s trip to the Wind Tribe village is a rough one, though since Fuga was set on testing Corrin’s worth by sending a bunch of his tribesmen to get slaughtered by their army anyway I wonder why he even bothered. This is a rare case of a desert map that isn’t a frustrating pain in the ass, because it’s small and there are Dragon Veins to reduce the amount of sand. I also like how even on the lowest difficulty of the easiest route the game is already throwing a boss at you with some annoying skills. Fuga’s motivations may be silly, but at least he leaves us with the memory of a good chapter, some cryptic foreshadowing for the Yato, and a shota wind mage who unfortunately continues in the tradition of Ricken stepping away from their archetypical dynamic after Tellius made it just a little too close to explicitly gay.

Izana, huh...Izana is...
Let’s talk about Zola!
Zola is one of the rare Fates villains who isn’t (always) exactly what he looks like. On first glance he’s just a typical simpering syncophant with a fitting talent for illusions, but he actually comes with a bit of a character arc in Birthright which I have to say I wasn’t expecting. It was almost as unexpected as Leo’s unexplained appearance at the end of this chapter to kick off said arc by leaving Zola exiled. One big problem I have with Fates is how characters have a tendency to teleport around off-screen as the plot demands it, distance between locations or basic geography be damned, but it’s marginally more forgivable here since Leo is shown later in this route to know how to perform literal teleportation.
I believe this is also one of the only times in Birthright where Hinoka gets to do something that affects the plot, so good on her for acting suspicious of fake!Izana. She’ll go right back to being overshadowed by her brothers - including being overshadowed at being overshadowed - soon enough.
Izumo’s role as the designated neutral nation is delved into more thoroughly in Conquest, weirdly enough. Here Corrin and co. get left only with a vague directive to head toward the Bottomless Canyon and some of Azura’s song lyrics. That’s kind of a good thing, because I’ve got nothing on Izana now. I get that he’s an amusing surprise the first time around, but...who wrote him like that?

Allow me to divert for a moment from the Takumi angst to pick some very large nits with the geography of this game. In the previous chapter Corrin learned that Ryoma and Takumi had been pushed to the Bottomless Canyon, which is nowhere near their location - but hold onto that thought. The canyon is clearly northwest of Izumo, yet the party goes south to Mokushu allegedly in an effort to reach them there. Fates has a bad time in general with giving a good impression of where its events are taking place, partly because the scale of the map is odd and not helped by it being a topographic rather than a political map like in every other FE, partly because there are times like this where the information presented appears to be simply wrong. What’s worse, the major plot development surrounding Takumi’s possession in Birthright does not, at least so far as I recall, necessitate that he have been possessed by Anankos or anyone else connected to the Bottomless Canyon. I’ll certainly be revisiting this when the time comes.
But...whatever. In spite of everyone getting lost except Ryoma (because of course) this is actually a good chapter, with a cramped map filled with environmental hazards to add challenge. The treachery of Mokushu spans all three routes and is one of those set pieces that benefits from development in each of them. Kotaro’s connection to the, er, Christmas ninjas (and elsewhere, Shura) isn’t developed here unless you choose to have them engage him in combat, but that just saves stuff for the other routes.

Pictured: easily one of the most forgettable playable characters in this game. It’s a shame too, because she’s the only default kinshi knight and her bits of dialogue and few supports offer hints of an interesting backstory that would speak to gender roles in Hoshido. Alas, she’s merely a Corrinsexual.
This chapter itself is filler, but mechanically it’s good filler. Your new OP archer royal gets plenty of targets for his bow, there are some promoted generics to spice things up, and the Dragon Veins can either help or hinder you depending on how you use them. I don’t care for the antagonist fake-out between the opening and closing cutscenes and the chapter proper - where did possessed!Sumeragi the mysterious swordsman go while you were fighting the fliers? - but that’s a minor quibble. Corrin already beat that guy.
A larger problem is with Takumi’s development, or rather lack thereof. As I said last time the events of the opening chapters explain his initial hostility to Corrin (and Azura) quite well, and Mikoto’s death only reinforces that feeling. Why then does that hostility vanish so quickly in Birthright? Just one chapter after recruitment and he’s already turned his characteristic prickliness onto Zola instead, and I don’t recall it appearing much again except in the context of possession. It’s only the route the ends with Takumi as the final boss that allows him space for his feelings to develop organically (albeit in a negative direction), possibly because Conquest is the only one in which he’s not beholden to love Corrin like all playable characters in Avatar-centered games.

Finally. Somewhere you belonged. At school, you never believed that you fit in with the crowd but at university, everyone was accepted and you loved it.
Your father was right, you did need Jimin's letters to comfort you as you settled in. It was a fear of the unknown being comforted by another unknown, that being, if you’d ever speak to him again.  
You met some amazing friends at University and 2 of them, you even considered your best friends, Rebecca and Amelia. They were both just as misunderstood as you were but you all understood each other, it was nice. 
 *6 months later*
It had been 6 months since you moved to University and there was still no contact with Jimin. You stayed in contact with Jihyun. He always messaged you on a Sunday to find out how you week had been and if you were feeling okay. You always lied. Of course you weren't okay. You had lost the love of your life and you had no idea when or if you'd ever speak to him again.  
"Jihyun, I've got to go" you said as Rebecca and Amelia walked into your dorm. "Ooooh, who’s that?" They asked, making kissing noises and faces after you ended the call. You hadn't told them about Jimin. You didn't want your non-existent love life to be a burden on them. "Just an old friend" you smiled, not lying.  
"I think there's something more going on" Rebecca laughed, sitting next to you on the bed and nudging your shoulder hard that you fell onto your pillow cushions. "Me too" Amelia agreed, composing herself after laughing from watching you dead ass fall from the slightest of nudges.  
"There's nothing, honestly.. It's just Jihyun" you stated. You came off like a closed book. You didn't want them to know about Jimin, even though you felt they needed too.  
"Um Y/N, is everything okay? Just recently you've seemed a bit.. Off.." Amelia questioned. "Yeah, that's what we actually came to talk to you about" Rebecca finished off.
Everything wasn't okay. You hadn't been right since your birthday 2 weeks ago. You expected something to turn up at the dorm, for Jihyun to say he had a message from Jimin.. Anything. But nothing came.  
Tears filled your eyes once more and you didn't want to lie to your best friends. These people knew everything about your past apart from what you considered the most important part, losing the love of your life.
"We didn't mean to upset you" Amelia soothed, rubbing your back as Rebecca knelt down in front of you with a concerned look on her face. "Yous didn't. But girls.. We need to talk..".  
They both sat bolt up right next to you on the bed, not knowing what to expect. You laughed at how protective they seemed. "I'm just going to go over here" you pointed to the floor, giggling. "Seriously, it's not that bad.. Well kinda" you shrugged.
"When I was in school, you both know that I acted up. But in my Geography class, I was given a pen pal from South Korea" "Jihyun?" Rebecca questioned midsentence. "No.. Not Jihyun. Anyway, we started talking and instantly connected on levels I never thought you could connect to a person. He felt misunderstood too. He went through troubles like me too. He wanted more than just an education.. He wanted to live. You both know how I've always wanted to be an actress but decided to go down the university route? Well he had the choice between education and dancing and he went down the dancing route.. And honestly, I have never been so proud of a person. I wanted to fly to Korea and hug him. He inspired me to go on auditions. Even though I didn't get them, I got great feedback but ultimately, this is what I chose. I feel like it's definitely the right path.. But enough about me. His name is Jimin and he is Jihyun's brother"  
"Ah" Rebecca let out. "So it's a love triangle?" "Ew, no!" You shrieked at the thought of fancying Jimin's brother.. "He's wonderful but he's Jimin's brother.. Just let me continue. He understood me so much and he just always seemed to know me.. Get me? He sent me flowers when he knew I was down, called my parents to get me ice cream from the supermarket when I was stressed revising.. All of those things you know? Then he seemed to go in his shell and started apologising for not being the person I thought he was so I was very confused. To cut a long story short, he went to Seoul for an audition and was successful but needed to keep it under wraps and couldn't tell a soul. I even told him I loved him a voicemail and I don't know whether he received it.. I always wondered whether that was why he stopped talking. Then I then lost contact with him. Soon after, I received a message on a cake from a local bakery that Jimin has sent telling me to expect a letter in the post explaining why I wasn't able to contact him. The letter arrived and he was apologising for everything and that he'd speak to me when he can. I went online to find his social media accounts were all disconnected. I had no contact. Jihyun contacted me and explained everything.. But, I don't know whether I can say anything." You ranted off.
"You can tell us anything" Rebecca promised. You knew you could. You just didn't know whether you wanted to. You felt betrayed and abandoned by Jimin and didn't want to come across as looking vulnerable. "So do you think Jimin stopped talking to you because you told him you loved him?" Amelia questioned.
You sighed. "Honestly, I did at first. But then Jihyun explained the situation and like I said, I'm not sure whether he had even received it.". Obviously, since Rebecca and Amelia were your friends, they knew the course you studied. Korean. And always wondered where your passion for the subject came from. You never told them the real reason. You just explained that you fell in love with the country at school.  
There was silence whilst they tried to comprehend everything you were saying. Rebecca finally spoke up. "He taught you Korean didn't he?". You nodded. "You didn't just fall in love with the language and culture.. You fell in love with him too" Rebecca chimed in matter of factly. You nodded again.  
"You're going to have to tell us what he did.. Did he enlist?" Amelia gasped. You explained the whole of the Korean culture to them. They knew everything. They loved your passion for the country and language and could listen to you talking for hours about it. Amelia even started watching K-POP groups with you and was more obsessed than what you were..  
"No, he didn't enlist. Um, oh god, forgive me Jimin" you repeated Jihyun's words from your first conversation. "Jimin is um, he's urm.. Amelia.. He's a trainee" you explained. She gasped louder than when she questioned whether he had enlisted.
"He's a what now?" Rebecca laughed, not understanding the Korean jargon. You could see Amelia getting really excited and clenching her fists and gritting her teeth through amazement.
"A trainee is someone who is hired by an entertainment company and is trained up to be a professional entertainer whether that's a singer, dancer or actor.. Usually a singer and/or dancer and they then debut as a solo artist or musical group. It's the only normal way to become a recording artist over there" Amelia explained to Rebecca.
"Hold up" Rebecca paused Amelia's excitement. "You're trying to tell me that the K-POP groups that you listen too.. Your pen pal friend is going to be one of them?" She directed her question to you. "It's a massive possibility.. He may not be successful.. Even if he is, he may not debut for years or they may not be popular and disband before they even get an album out. It works very differently in Korea. If you're not popular from the get go, or at least have a following, you wont succeed in any manner" you explained.
"This is so much to take in" Rebecca stated, rubbing her head. "I know, imagine how I feel" you laughed off, giving them a hug and thanking them for being there for you.  
*3 months later*
You had been back home for the spring break and now back at university. Before you could even get back to your dorm, you had several missed calls from Rebecca and Amelia and some other friends who were trying to get in contact with you on their behalf.
"What's up?" You asked in the group call, trying to stick your key in the door whilst holding all of your bags. "When you get a minute, come to the library" Rebecca requested. "I've only just got here.. I'm not doing work!" You laughed. "Y/N.. Please just come to the library" Amelia sternly spoke. You were confused. This wasn't like them at all. "Is everything okay?" You queried, concerned, hitting your phone onto loud speaker as you dropped it onto the bed and dropped your bags from your arms, giving you an instant sensation of relief.  
"Yeah. I think so. Just, I can't really say much.. I don't know what to make of it. I-I don't know if.. Just get down here" Amelia spoke, just as stern as before. You were panicked. You had no idea what this could be about. "Okay, I'm coming now" you said, picking up your bag and running out of the door.  
You walked into the library and spotted their pale faces from a mile away. Rebecca even presented you with a cup of coffee and a shortbread. You knew this wasn't going to be good news. Coffee and shortbread were your comfort foods and they knew this.  
"So um, Y/N.. I don't know how to say this. I don't really know how to explain this. Hopefully it's nothing. Hopefully if it is something, you're keeping something from us too.. But we need to talk about Jimin." She explained. Your heart sank. You hadn't stopped thinking about him at all, but you were hoping as the days passed by, the pain would evaporate.. But it wasn't. If anything, it was getting harder. And your sleepless nights could vouch for that.
"J-Jimin?" You stuttered. Your hands started shaking and Rebecca put her hands around them to stop them. Your knees then started to shake and you felt weak. You knew something bad was about to happen.
"Have you spoke recently?" Amelia asked. You looked at her with a vague expression. "Well no.. I've already explained this. I have no contact" you huffed, slightly pissed she even asked you that. Amelia and Rebecca looked at each other and Rebecca muttered "fuck" under her breath. "What's going on?" You asked. "I'm getting worried". You felt that awful closing feeling at the back of your throat.
"Is his name Park Jimin and from Busan?" Amelia asked, staring at the computer screen. You looked up and dead eye stared at her. You never told her his surname or where he was from before. After your talk with Rebecca and Amelia, you never wanted to speak about it and hardlies ever did. "How did you--?" You asked before being cut off by Rebecca. "Is this him?" She asked, spinning the computer screen round in your direction.
You hadn't seen a picture of Jimin in a good few months. You stopped watching his videos he sent you because it broke your heart. The only thing you occasionally read were his letters but his image was permanently etched in your brain so there were no need for a constant photographic reminder.
You gulped and gasped at the same time. "That's him" you blinked, moving your head closer to the screen in a tilting confused motion. Rebecca looked at Amelia, obviously trying to get her to ask you a question but her words didn't seem to form.  "Y/N.. When did he say he would contact you?" Rebecca asked, gripping your hands tighter. "When he wasn't a trainee.. When he debuted" you stated, looking just as confused as ever.  
There was a moments silence and nobody knew what to say. "I'll let this do the talking" Amelia said solemnly, pressing play on the Youtube video.

‘Hey what's your dream? Is that all your dream is?’
You had already had enough. You reached over your friends and tried to pause the video by using the space bar but missed. The video continued playing. Rebecca and Amelia were too focused on your face and demeanor to think about turning it off. Your heart was beating fast and the lump in your throat was getting bigger.
"He's debuted hasn't he?" You said through slightly gritted teeth. You felt pissed, hurt, alone, betrayed but ultimately, heartbroken. Amelia nodded. "I'm so sorry" they both said in unison.
There was another moments silence and you heard the song in the background.  
"That’s a lie, you such a liar See me, see me, ya you’re a hypocrite Why’re you telling to go a different path? Take care of yourself Please don’t force me" you translated out loud as you were going along with the song.
You had to admit. You loved the song. You even closed your eyes to somehow enhance your hearing sense.
"What's your dream? What's your dream? La La La La La." Jimin's voice. You took a deep breath. "That's Park Jimin alright" you smiled.  
You smiled because you were so proud. The feeling of overwhelming love and pride washed over you as soon as you saw him sing. He went to Seoul as a dancer and is now a singer.. You loved his singing voice. He even sang you to sleep over Skype sometimes. Well, in the past.  
Suddenly, you were struck down to reality. "When was this video published?" You gulped. He said he would contact you when he could. Jihyun said that Jimin would contact you. Why hadn't he? Had it just been posted?  
Neither Rebecca or Amelia said anything. "Just tell me!" You shouted in the middle of the library. You tensed your face and whispered 'sorry' the those studying around you and put your hand up to the librarians to resemble an apology.  
Amelia plucked up the courage to tell you. "Y/N.. They debuted 5 weeks ago"

Know how to write effective answers in Social Science
The art of writing a good and an effective answer is a key to secure a perfect score in Social Science. Most students have a fair understanding and knowledge of the concepts and facts in Social Science but tend to lose marks if they do not know the technique of writing a good answer.
In CBSE class 10, Social Science comprises of four subjects- History, Civics, Geography and Economics. All the four subjects carry equal marks. Refer to the CBSE Class 10 social science syllabus to understand the types of chapters.
While reading the Class 10 Social Science subjects, it is essential to take down notes of important topics so that you can refer to them while preparing for exams. Important topics are those that are repeatedly asked in Board Papers.
In SST class 10 board paper, generally questions of 1, 3 and 5 marks are asked. The first step towards writing a good answer is to limit the word count of the answer based on the marks indicated against the question. So, if the question is of 1 mark, limit your answer to 30 words. If the question is of 3 marks, write the answer in about 80 words and use 100-120 words for answering a 5-mark question.
Do not fill the space unnecessary. Write precise and to the point answers. Also, write the answers in neat handwriting. Examiners may find it difficult to read shabby and an illegible handwriting. This could result in the deduction of marks.
After you get the paper, read the questions carefully and figure out the information that is asked. For example, look at the two questions below:
How did ‘Salt March’ become an effective tool of resistance against colonialism? Explain.
Why did Gandhi choose salt for civil disobedience movement?
Though the above questions may look similar but the answers of both are different. In the first question, you need to write how was ‘Salt March’ used by Gandhi against the British, while in the second question, you need to state reasons as to why he chose ‘salt’ to start the Civil Disobedience Movement.
It is suggested to write the answers of CBSE class 10 social Science questions in points. Try to write the answers of 3 and 5 marks questions in points and not in paragraphs. Generally, write 3 points for 3 marks questions and 5 points for 5 marks question. While answering such question, students should ideally write one line introduction. The introductory line could be taken from question stem too. Lengthy answers of sst class 10 questions should start from Introduction and end with a conclusion.
After you have written down the answers in points, it is recommended to underline the key words or main points in the answer. Key words are those which define the main idea of your answer. Sometimes, the examiners quickly glance through the answers and try to find the main idea or the key word.  If these are highlighted or underlined, you can get maximum marks. But remember, underline only the important text. Unnecessary and irrelevant markings in the answers may look shabby and you may end up losing marks.
At times, if it applies, you can present information in Geography and Economics in the form of flowcharts or mind maps. These make your answer look more concise and appealing. Do mention important and relevant dates in History while writing the answers.  
If you follow the guidelines that we have discussed above, you will be able to get a perfect score in CBSE class 10 Social Science. Read your NCERT chapters thoroughly, take down important points in your notebook and revise the concepts and facts. Practise writing the answers. The more you write, the better you will become. Take help of the CBSE Class 10 SST sample papers and improve the art of writing answers.
