Mixed Drink - 20/? | westallen fanfiction
A/N: And so it begins. (Next chap will start looong flashbacks to Iris’ entire backstory.)
Commissioned by @andromidagalaxie
...
Chapter 20 -
Wally watched as his sister fell apart before his eyes. He hadn’t seen her like this maybe ever, or at least not for a long time. She practically crumbled, feeling around for a chair away from where he was standing so he couldn’t see. That irked him a little, but they had been in the middle of a fight. It was no wonder she didn’t want him looking on to see her in such a vulnerable state.
When her breath hitched and the chair leg squeaked across the floor though, he forgot about their fight entirely, even all the bitterness that he held against her, and just wanted to hold her. He might be her little brother, but he was still her brother, and brothers protected their sisters from being hurt.
For the first time in years he felt a stab of guilt over him being the one who was hurting her for so long.
The thought faded, although the feeling didn’t, when he saw his sister end the call, literally trembling now with the information she’d been given.
“Iris?” he asked hesitantly.
She slowly turned around.
“You need to go,” she said on a shaky breath.
His brows narrowed. “What? Why?”
“Because I need to go, and you can’t be here after I leave. I have to lock up.”
That sounded rational. He relaxed.
“But also, I really don’t want to see your face right now.”
His brows locked together again.
“Because?” He scoffed.
“Because the last thing I need to worry about right now is what you think of our past and our relationship and all the shit I’ve done to our family that has you loathing the very sight of me. Even though you were the one seeking me out tonight, so-”
“Forget that,” he said. “Who was on the phone?”
She blinked, suddenly enraged that he was playing the concerned brother card after so many years of pushing her away.
“That’s none of your business,” she spat.
“But it’s your business.”
She scoffed. “Which makes it not yours.” She shook her head. “Asshole.”
She started moving past him, but he stopped her before she could get too far ahead.
“Why are you crying?” he asked, noting the tear tracks staining her cheeks.
“Because-” She huffed, pulling herself free from his grip. “Fine. You want to know why I’m crying?” Wally nodded. “Because my boyfriend just got shot and is in critical condition. I’m going to the hospital, so you need to leave.”
“Wait.” He took a step back and halted her again. “Since when do you have a boyfriend?”
Her eyes widened and jaw dropped in disbelief.
“I don’t have to explain myself to you!”
“Wait, Iris-”
“It’s time to go, Wally. We can talk about…whatever this was supposed to be another time. The longer you stay, the longer I have to stay, and the more time there is before I can see if my boyfriend is going to be okay or if he’ll be long dead before I’ve finished talking with you.”
Her voice was still shaky, but there was determination in it now. She was done giving explanations.
He sighed, exasperated.
“Shouldn’t… Shouldn’t you take someone with you?” Her eyes blazed. “I mean, I could-”
“You?!” she asked incredulously. “You don’t give a shit about me and would probably judge the hell out of my boyfriend. I’m not telling you where I’m going or letting you come with me. That’s final.”
He stared her down, so Iris scrambled to come up with an answer he’d accept.
“I’ll call Stacy. She’ll meet me there, I’m sure of it.”
He didn’t like it, but he could see he wasn’t going to get any further with her tonight, and he did have his own relationship to worry about. Jesse hadn’t exactly been pleased when he ran off with her recorder after listening to the tail end of the recording.
“Fine.”
He took a step back and headed for the door. Once outside, he jumpstarted the conversation again.
“But you’ll call me if-”
“I will not call you. Go salvage your relationship, if you can, and tell Jesse she can go to hell too. You don’t go into a meeting with a source without asking them if it’s okay you can record them. She’s a real bitch for that one.”
“Hey-”
“Leave, Wally. It’s what you’re best at anyway.”
That shook him to the core. He watched her lock up and push past him and knew a sense of defeat unlike anything he’d ever felt before.
“Iris!” he called before she was too far away, but she kept walking.
He knew she heard him because there was a brief pause in her step when he called, barely noticeable to any innocent observer, but he’d seen it. Of course, he’d seen it. He knew her. She was his sister. And they used to be best friends.
If only he’d known that night 10 years ago would change everything…
The near silent creak of the door opening started to wake Wally up in the middle of the night. He mumbled something in his sleep and shut his eyes tightly. There was not a robber at his door. It was impossible.
“Psst. Wally.”
Oh, thank God. It was just his sister.
He moaned, still half-asleep.
“Wally!” she whispered a little louder, so he sighed and pulled back the cover, propping himself up on his elbow. He reached for his glasses and pushed them on, squinting in the darkness.
“What?” he croaked.
Iris slipped into his room and closed the door quietly behind her.
“Shh, Mom and Dad will hear you if you’re too loud.”
“They’re at the other end of the hall,” he said, dropping his head back into his soft pillow.
“Wally!” she yell-whispered.
He groaned. “WHAT?”
She came and sat down on the edge of his bed.
“Should you be asleep?” he complained.
“Not tonight,” she said, practically giddy. “Tonight we’re going on an adventure.”
Wally opened one eye to see her beaming. Despite himself, he was intrigued.
“What kind of adventure?”
Her teeth shone brightly in the moonlight streaming through his window.
“We’re going to break into Dad’s office.”
“Huh?” he asked, worriedly. “Why would we do that?”
“To grab some of his files, obviously.”
“But why-”
“I need it for my class. You don’t need to know the details.”
“I do if I’m going to get punished for it!” he squeaked.
She rolled her eyes. “You won’t get punished. I’ve planned it all out. Now are you in or are you out?”
“What do you need me for?” he grumbled.
“As a look out, of course. I need someone smaller than me-”
“I’m not that much smaller,” he interjected, much to her annoyance. At 16 she’d stopped growing, but at 12 he was only about a foot shorter than her.
“You’re small enough,” she retorted. “I told my friends you’d have no problem, that you weren’t an absolute scaredy-cat.”
“I’m not!” he whined, and she clamped her hand over his mouth.
“I know you’re not.” She smiled slowly. “Thanks for coming through for me, buddy.”
“Wait.” He pulled her hand down. “I never said-”
“Meet me in the kitchen in five,” she said, her eyes gleaming. “Trust me, Wally, you’re not going to want to miss this.”
He took a deep breath as soon as she left, and very reluctantly started to change his clothes. He had a very bad feeling about this, but Iris was his sister, and her ‘exciting plans’ usually amounted to something great. He wasn’t going to chicken out this time.
Wally brought himself back to the present and looked ahead to see his sister disappear just around the bend. Some old resentment rushed to the surface, but so did his stubborn returned need to be there for his sister, and to find out who the hell this boyfriend was.
He could listen to the full recording to find out more possible details, but he knew he’d have to talk to Jesse too. She’d been a natural in her Journalism class since it started. He knew she was a math and science genius, but the way she interrogated and softened in the same breath made him wonder if she’d be more suited as a lawyer or a journalist than an engineer or scientist.
It would be hard though. They hadn’t exactly parted on loving words.
“Go to hell, Wally!”
He winced. Time to grovel and then scheme, just as Iris had taught him.
…
With shaking fingers, Iris pulled her phone back out and called her go-to number in all things end-of-the-world.
“Come on. Pick up, pick up, pick up…” She gnawed on her bottom lip, eager to get to her place so she could grab her car and head on over to North Central City Hospital where Felicity had told her Barry was on the way too.
She couldn’t believe this was happening. First he gets mugged that first week she saw him, and now he’s shot? Just what kind of job did he do and how did Central City suddenly get so violent?
It hardly mattered at the moment, but it was a nagging voice in the back of her mind that she knew she’d have to come back to when all of this was over.
“Hello?” came the chipper voice of one Stacy Conwell.
She knew she could count on her to still be up at almost midnight.
“Stace! Thank God you picked up.”
“Iris?” Stacy’s brows furrowed on the other end. “What’s wrong?”
“Barry’s been shot.”
“What?!”
Iris nodded, tears escaping her now.
“His co-worker just called me, said it happened on the job. She didn’t have many details to share, but I guess there a freak shooter that just came in and Barry was trying to protect people when he was caught in the line of fire.”
“Oh, my God.” Stacy thought frantically for a moment. “Where are you?”
“A couple blocks away from Jitters.”
Stacy frowned. “I thought your shift ended earlier today.”
“It did. I was just-” She was barely holding back tears, so Stacy aborted her line of questioning.
“You know what, you can tell me later. Do you want me to come pick you up?”
“Yes, please.” She sniffled. “He’s at North Central City hospital.”
“Shit. That’s not close.”
“I know, I know!” Iris cried.
“Okay, stay put. I’m coming as fast as I can. Alright?”
Iris nodded and sniffled again. “Okay. Thank you.”
“Yeah. No problem. See you soon, Iris.”
Iris ended the call and huddled against the building she was nearest to. It was pitch black outside, streetlights the only thing keeping the city from falling into complete darkness. It was cold too, and Iris hadn’t brought a coat with her.
Barry’s face flashed before her eyes. Their kisses, their little moments, his love declaration, their dirty texts… Three weeks with this man, and she was already hopelessly in love with him. This couldn’t be the end of their story. She refused.
Unfortunately, when she tried to make her mind think of something else, all it kept going back to was her conversations with Wally and Jesse.
The nerve of that girl, making her think she had the best of intentions, that they were kindred spirits, that she wanted to bring her family back together, when really she… Well, Iris didn’t know what Jesse was up to, but it couldn’t be anything good if she’d planned to record her without her consent. That was the kind of scandalous thing… Well, that she would’ve done before everything got shot to hell.
She’d been so prepared tonight to share everything, to delve into her deepest, darkest secret, known only to the West family, to who was a complete stranger to her. She’d been a fool to think this girl was trustworthy. But in thinking about what she was going to say, it really started to take her back. She’d thought on those memories with regret and distaste but also longing for what had been.
She’d been in high school when it began, in her junior year at Central City High. She’d just enrolled in a Journalism class and found herself fascinated by the topic. Before that, she’d been determined to be a cop. Not solely to piss her dad off, though that was kind of amusing in and of itself, but because she wanted to be a force on the streets, protecting those who needed protecting and making sure other cops were kept in line, sticking to their vow of defending the helpless while maintaining order in the justice system.
But that was before she discovered journalism. In that first class she had fallen hard, not only with the charming professor who spoke about his passion for the truth and the public’s right to know it as if it was the air who breathed, but also the subject itself. It was a beating drum inside her that she couldn’t squelch. And she knew then that this was what she was meant to do.
Unfortunately for her, the types of stories the school newspaper was expected to write were hardly worth talking about. Meetings and basketball games and fundraisers, hardly the stuff she wanted to write. No, she wanted to bring criminals to justice and stop victims from feeling so helpless and unprotected. A story she wanted to write could do that, but at what cost?
She hadn’t considered the repercussions then. And if she had, well, she probably would’ve done the same thing. It would’ve been worth the risk in her mind, just as everything had been…
For Iris West, writer extraordinaire, nothing could come between her and a story.
Even her own and her family’s reputation.
And safety.
The sound of a horn beeping pulled her from her thoughts, and she realized Stacy had finally arrived. She climbed into the car and shut the door, trying to still herself as thoughts of Barry resurfaced.
Stacy reached across the middle to squeeze her hand tightly, and Iris forced a smile. She released her hand then and turned to look out the window, her thoughts drifting to the past once more.
It had started to rain, and thunder rumbled in the distance.
Just like that night so many years ago…

Summary
Ever since the battle of Hogwarts, and the defeat of you know who along with his death eaters, The Wizarding World has been at peace. Wizards and witches feel secure, and don’t expect any nasty surprises or uprisings in the near future. So what happens when alliances against them form in the most unlikely places, And a new struggle for power begins? Well, the newest generation at Hogwarts is about to find out!
Lucie gave a cat like stretch, and tossed her quill onto the table in front of her. She squinted down at her watch, it was a quarter to midnight, and they had to meet the others in 15 minutes. Lucie Felt the nervous excitement, that always came when she was about to do something she knew she wasn’t supposed to be doing, mixed with exhaustion. It had taken much longer than previously anticipated, to finish her potions essay on the draft of a ternal sleep. Matthew seated beside her wasn’t even halfway through his own essay he kept sneaking glances at Lucie’s when he thought she wasn’t paying attention. Christopher was seated in his favorite arm chair by the fire, immersed in one of his well thumbed notebooks.
Christopher usually did not join Lucie, And Matthew when they did school work together, In the Ravenclaw common room. This wasn’t because he didn’t enjoy spending time with his friends, Christopher was very intelligent, and had an amazing memory. this meant that he excelled in all of their classes, and finished assignments incredibly quickly. instead of using his ample amount of free time to socialize with his friends, he spent it on his research. He was fascinated in the ways that everything magical, and non-magical function. None of his friends ever got annoyed at Christopher for this, they knew it was what he enjoyed doing. If it made her cousin happy then Lucie was satisfied.
Lucie scanned the common room. Ravenclaws despite their reputation of put togetherness, And Great organizers were a very untidy bunch. Scraps of parchment, with half thought out calculations, and ideas scribbled on them, Lay strewn across tables, and chairs. Broken quills lay beside chocolate frog wrappers, and empty ink bottles. The mess looked even worse contrasted against the common rooms elegantly arched ceiling covered in constellations, And spotless white bookshelves. She wasn’t judging her fellow comrades housekeeping however, Lucie was making sure everyone else had gone up to bed.
Matthew gave her a teasing grinn, which Lucie ignored. They both knew that the last Ravenclaws, A group of giggling fifth year girls had made their way upstairs, A half an hour ago. Despite this, Lucie had been nervously glancing over her shoulder, every five minutes. The sick feeling at the pit of her stomach had been increasing, as the night wore on. Lucie suffered from terrible nerves, every time they snuck out of Ravenclaw Tower, ever since she was 12 years old. In fact, she suspected they had only intensified throughout the years. Matthew treated the situation as he treated everything else, not very seriously.
He always tried to reassure her, By pointing out the fact, that if they hadn’t gotten caught by now, they probably never would. In response to this, Lucie would always remind him that she was the head girl of Ravenclaw, And Matthew was both there Quidditch team captain, and the Minister of Magic‘s youngest son! So they couldn’t afford, to rely on probably. She would suffer through her nerves, however to be able to spend a few hours spending time with her beloved friends, each week.
“Luce shouldn’t we get going?” Matthew inquired, looking over at her. She nodded, neatly rolling up her essay, and stuffing it inside her school bag along with her quill, And ink bottle. Matthew looked down at his essay, and side dramatically. “I guess I shall have to bring this accursed piece of paper along!” Lucy gave Matthew a questioning look. Shall?, but all she said was “I am sure you can get Daisy to help you.” He made a face at her, and she grinned. They both knew, that he would prefer to work with James, or Thomas. Cordelia was one of Lucie’s favorite people in the world, but even she could admit that Daisy could be a little intimidating at times.
Though Cordelia could be withdrawn at times, she always gave off a quiet aura of confidence and authority. Lucie doubted that her best friend, was even aware of this aspect of her personality. She knew with certainty though, that they played a big role in Cordelia being Quidditch captain, And head girl of Gryffindor house. Whenever Daisy helped Math with his homework, she watched him intently the entire time to make sure he was focused, and didn’t put up with his dramatics. Jamie on the other hand, usually ended up getting into trouble with Matthew, or just doing most of the assignment for him. They were best friends as close as Lucie and Cordelia, and had been best friends before even coming to Hogwarts.
Matthew gave her one of his best winning smiles “ come on Luce help someone in need.” She Scoffed “ oh don’t try that on me Math. I have been immune to your charms since you tried to eat Christopher’s pet ladybug Mr. spots on a dare from my brother when we were eight.” He frowned “ not One of my finest moments. It’s a good thing father stopped me, I’ve heard ladybugs are positively ghastly for one’s complexion!” Lucie wasn’t even going to bother asking, where Matthew had gotten said information. “ Matthew no matter how many times you refer to my father as yours it will not make it true.“ and I still haven’t gotten over Mr. spots you know.” Christopher said quietly from the fire. Lucie laughed, You never knew when Christopher was listening and when he wasn’t. Sometimes she would recount a long story to him, or an explanation of something, before realizing that he wasn’t paying attention in the slightest. Christopher wasn’t rude he was just, as his older sister Anna put it off in his own world.
Matthew gave them both Hurt looks “ no respect even from my closest friends!” “ you’ll get respect from me when you finish your essay.” She said, Pointing to the piece of paper on the table in front of him. “ you’ll never get it from me.” Christopher said matter-of-factly, Turning a page of his notebook. Matthew waved his wand, and sent all of his possessions including the much hated essay flying into his bag, in an unorderly jumble.
It wasn’t that he wasn’t smart, Matthew was as intelligent as all of his fellow Ravenclaw’s. He would just rather do the spells, and potions they were assigned. Then in his words “ wasting hours of my life shut up in Ravenclaw Tower, up to my ears in books, and essays depriving the world of my many talents!” His friends also knew, though he would never admit it that Matthew struggled sometimes under the expectations set for him. His mother Charlotte was the minister of magic, and his older brother Charles had been head boy of Ravenclaw house. Everyone was always watching him, waiting to see if he would be another success of the family, Or a screwup that they were secretly ashamed about. The professors, even treated him differently than the rest of the class sometimes. This caused Matthew to say rude things in class, and act out sometimes. Lucie, And her brother never stayed mad at him for long because of it though, they knew he was just constantly under a lot of stress. Matthew was at his best when he was with his friends.
He looked over at her his dark green eyes reflecting the fire light, as if he knew she had been thinking about him. “ ready to go?“ yep.” She replied, standing up and crossing the dark blue carpeted floor to Christopher, as Matthew bent to retrieve their brooms from their hiding place beneath the table. Beside Matthews chair Oscar wined. Oscar Wilde, was Matthews much adored golden retriever. He had been a present from James, back in their fourth year, for Matthews birthday. Oscar hated it every time they left him at night, he was incredibly loyal to Matthew and his friends. Whenever they were in the common room he would follow Matthew wherever he went. Matthew spoiled Oscar to no end, and loved his dog as much as Oscar loved him. They even bared a resemblance to each other, With the same shaggy golden hair, and green eyes, though Oscars were much lighter than Matthews.
She gave Christopher a gentle tap on his shoulder “ Time to go Kit.” In the space of about a minute, her cousin had slipped back into his own world. He blinked his dark blue eyes up at her, from behind his gold rimmed spectacles. They were the same as Lucie’s father, and aunt Cecily’s. Though their other cousins, Thomas, Barbara, and Eugenia did not share them. he blinked “ is it? Odd how quickly time passes, we were just talking about my poor ladybug Mr. spots.” He glared over at Matthew, who was stroking Oscar’s floppy ears. His own, and Lucie’s brooms on the floor beside them. She didn’t bother telling Christopher that it had only been a minute or so, instead she went to the window, and slid it open. Freezing night air streamed into the room, causing the fire to sputter wildly in it’s grate. Lucie was glad for the cold air, she leaned out the window taking in big lung fulls of it. Enjoying how it helped clear her nerves, and wake her up.
Matthew tide their bags to the back of her broom, with a practiced hand. As Oscar Wilde sat looking up at him with a disgruntled expression. Christopher gave Matthews broom a look that matched Oscars, he despised flying he was the only member of their group that was not on there house quidditch team. He didn’t even own a broom, Christopher said he would prefer to keep his feet on the ground at all times. He usually rode on the back of Matthews broom, and Lucie carried her own, and Matthews school bags on the back of hers. There was usually no need to bring Christophers, since he almost always had all his work complete. Sometimes Lucie would leave some of her work to the last minute on purpose. So she could work on it with Cordelia. Even though they had had this routine in place since their second year at Hogwarts, Christopher still hadn’t adjusted to it.
Matthew and Christopher joined her at the window, as Oscar slunk over dejectedly, to a spot by the fire, no doubt to wait for their return a few hours later. Matthew handed Lucie her broom, it was a bit awkward with the two bags tied to the end of it but, they managed to get it out the window, where it floated there like an odd bird. Matthew performed in over the top bow, and held his hand out for her to take “ my lady your chariot awaits. Lucie rolled her eyes at him, but took his outstretched hand. Usually in the winter months they needed to help each other clamber out of the window, since the sill was usually slick with ice. She climbed up onto the cold slippery stones. The sharp edges of them bit into her knees through her robes. Wincing Lucie began to slide off the ledge, and Matthews warm fingers still clutched tightly in hers, into the still dark Night below.
I really hope you guys liked this! if you could please like, And reblog, And don’t be shy you can leave a note telling me what you liked, and didn’t like about this first chapter. The REAL Truth About ADHD: An Open Letter to Nicole Arbour
Hi, Nicole.
I’m Tessa. I am 19 years old- that’s right, a legally full-grown adult, old enough to make my own doctor’s appointments, pay for my own medications with the money that I make from my very own job, and make my own decisions about said medications and doctor’s appointments (which I kind of have a lot of).
Here’s the thing. I have ADHD. Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder. Me. The full-grown adult (in the eyes of the law at least, but probably not to you if I had to guess). The person who has never had an entire cup of coffee in her life. The person who hasn’t had soda since she lived at home full-time and it was the cheapest drink at the grocery store so it was what my family bought. The person who had to have a lot of junk food growing up because it was what we could afford since, you know, fresh fruits and vegetables or whatever you might approve of are pretty damn expensive. But also the person who has since been eating much healthier since she’s been at college where the food- the fruits, the vegetables, the almond milk, the vegetarian options- is provided to her for free under her meal plan.
I was diagnosed about 2 weeks or so before my 19th birthday. I was a freshman in college, midway through my second semester, and was having a decidedly difficult time. I had managed to make Dean’s List first semester (I have yet to find out if I made it second semester), but that didn’t stop me from calling my parents at 11 or 12 at night, crying because I couldn’t do the reading for my class. I couldn’t do any of them. We had one or two readings each night, and I hadn’t done any. Not for lack of trying, I just couldn’t do it. I would sit down, and an hour later, was still on the first page. So I tried removing all distractions- I hid away my phone and my computer, cleared my desk, and removed all distracting sounds from the area. But still, I couldn’t get through it. I would read the same few sentences over and over again, but it was like my eyes were reading it but my mind wasn’t. I just couldn’t remember what I’d read. So I tried listening to music. Listening to music without lyrics. Listening to music I’d never heard. Listening to soft sounds of the beach or the forest or a city. I tried listening to nothing. I tried highlighting and not, annotating and not, reading out loud and not. But still, it would take me an hour to read a single page. I would go and discuss my difficulties with my professor almost once a week, trying to come up with strategies to finish these readings. They weren’t particularly long, by college standards- they were usually under 25 pages. But still, nothing helped.
So I would tear my room to shreds, tearing and throwing papers, throwing my books and my folders and my notebooks around, ripping my hair out, hitting myself, and just crying because I hated myself. I hated myself, because this wasn’t hard, but I couldn’t do it anyway. I hated myself because I was sure that I would fail every quiz and every exam that was thrown our way because I wouldn’t know anything since I hadn’t done any of the readings. I would punish myself because I thought that it was my fault, that I just wasn’t trying hard enough, that I just didn’t care enough, even though my efforts would prove otherwise.
Then, one day someone asked me, have you ever been tested for ADD? And I started thinking about it. I hadn’t ever been tested. But two of my brothers had ADHD, and I didn’t act anything like them. In fact, most of the time, I couldn’t stand them and many of their behaviors. I was never really hyperactive. As a child, I was stubborn and a pain in my parents’ necks, I never acted out or misbehaved in school, I got As and Bs. But I still had ADHD. Because ADHD doesn’t just mean a hyperactive child, because, yeah, those are common. But in fact, there are a few different kinds of ADHD. And I just happen to have Inattentive-Type ADHD- one that is more common in girls than in boys, too. So I wasn’t just daydreaming when I got distracted in class. I wasn’t just overreacting when I couldn’t accomplish a small, menial task. It wasn’t my fault that I got bored quickly and easily, that I was insanely disorganized, or that it took me more explanations and more tries to learn to do something than it ought to.
And so the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. I couldn’t do the readings, because I’d be sitting there trying to read, but all of a sudden I was thinking about what my brother said two years ago, or what my friends were doing then, or what other assignments I had to do, or what was going on outside, or what dresses I had in my closet, or where I had put my book, or who else throughout history was born on my birthday. I could never remember where I placed anything- on multiple occasions I had lost my phone and searched up and down campus for it when it was in my purse the entire time. I was always fidgeting in my seat, changing positions over and over and over again even in short 50 minute classes. I started thinking back, too. In high school, I never did the readings for some of my English classes, either. I convinced myself it was because they were boring, because I didn’t want to, because I didn’t care enough, but I realized it was because I couldn’t and since I knew I couldn’t I then wouldn’t want to. I would try to sit down and read the first few chapters, but a single page would take me 45 minutes. So I just wouldn’t do it. I hadn’t been able to finish my English midterm my freshman year in high school not because I was tired or hadn’t studied enough- I knew the material perfectly. I just couldn’t concentrate in the silent room, and instead fixated on the poster across the room or the outlet on the wall to my right. In 6th grade, when we took the placement test for math for 7th grade I got placed in the lower math class because I hadn’t been able to finish the test. I told everyone it was because the boys in the classroom were being loud, but I knew that wasn’t it. I was just too embarrassed to admit I just hadn’t been able to finish it. And it certainly wasn’t because I wasn’t good at math- I was in the advanced 6th grade math, and finished that lower level of 7th grade math with a 99 overall average.
And so, I talked to my parents about it. We made an appointment with a psychologist. We went out to the appointment together. And, for most of the appointment, I talked to the psychologist by myself. Since I was an adult, and not only was I able to, but I was legally obligated to make my own decisions on the matter.
But here’s the other thing. I also have Crohn’s disease. So when that psychologist wanted to prescribe me with a stimulant, which is proven to have an opposite effect in those diagnosed with ADHD as in those without, I told her I would have to get back to her since a stimulant could be bad for my Crohn’s disease. And because of my Crohn’s disease, guess what. I am on 5 prescription drugs. Every morning, I take Hyoscyamine so I don’t feel like I’m going to vomit every time I take a bite, and that way I can actually finish an entire meal instead of being dangerously underweight from avoiding food. Every morning I take a prescription strength Omeprazole so acid doesn’t burn another hole in my esophagus for no reason, like it already has once before. Every night I take Junel Fe, a birth control, not because I am having sex and need birth control, but because the hormones control my period which in turn guarantees that I won’t have a severe flare-up where I’m trapped in the bathroom for 3 days before and all 7 days of my period having severe diarrhea and cramping so bad I have to stay home from school and work the entire time. Every night, I take Indomethacin so I don’t have migraines so bad that I have to stay in my room all day in silence, with the blinds shut and the lights off because my head hurts so badly I can’t walk. I very frequently take prescription steroids so that I can stop vomiting and go to class, instead of continuing to vomit for hours.
So, yeah, I was taking 5 prescription drugs when they prescribed me another one. But those drugs help me be as functional as you are.
Since I was diagnosed with ADHD, guess what else. I haven’t torn my room apart, haven’t ripped papers to shreds or hair out of my head in fistfulls, haven’t cried for hours because I couldn’t do a simple 20 page reading, haven’t physically harmed myself because it should be easy but it wasn’t. In fact, since I started that ADHD medication, I’ve been able to sit down and finish a reading in one go. I sat down and finished one reading in 45 minutes instead of spending 2 days on it, getting nowhere, and giving up. And I finished a reading several times. Because I could do it now. I could sit down and concentrate.
Nicole, ADHD doesn’t mean hyperactive child that acts out in school. ADHD means I, the 19 year-old adult who lives away from home full-time and makes her own legal and health decisions, just don’t work the same way you do. And I just need one more prescription drug to help me be as functional as you are. You said in one of your videos that you’ve had chronic pain. That you’ve been clinically depressed. You would think this would make you more receptive to this issue, to taking medications just so you can function, just so you can get through the day. So please, when you try to tell the world that “ADD and ADHD are not real things,” try to take the whole picture into consideration.
Sincerely,
Tessa

You will find dozens, or even hundreds, of GRE books available on the marketplace. So just how are you supposed to get the one which's ideal for you?
Inside this guide, we will first discuss what makes a great GRE prep book. Afterward, we will provide recommendations to the eight greatest GRE prep novel alternatives for a assortment of ability levels and requirements.
What Makes a Fantastic GRE Prep Novel?
In the most elementary level, a fantastic GRE prep book can allow you to get a higher GRE score. But, there are some key features that make a GRE prep book especially likely to Assist You achieve that higher score you are aiming for:
Fantastic GRE books may have practice questions which are as similar to actual GRE questions as you can. This will let you get knowledgeable about this manner of GRE questions and practice the specific skills you want to create for GRE achievement. Obviously, the perfect is real, actual GRE questions--however, you can just buy those through ETS. Barring this, a fantastic GRE prep book will have queries that actually resemble and examine exactly the very same theories as GRE questions.
The very best practice questions on earth simply have limited usefulness if they are not accompanied by strong explanations of how to reach the right answer. So the very best prep books will not only have response keys, they will have comprehensive, comprehensive explanations of why particular answers are right. This allows you to readily see what it is that you are fighting with and what skills and approaches to target in additional training.
Quick side note: we have established the world's top online GRE prep app that adjusts to you and your weaknesses and strengths. We offer you minute by minute manual.
You do not require a training program to acquire a fantastic GRE score. But we think PrepScholar is your finest GRE prep app accessible today, particularly in the event that you find it really hard to arrange your research schedule and do not understand what to research.
Audio Test-Taking Plans A fantastic GRE study book features clear, consistent, actionable guidance about the best way best to browse the exam.
Hone theirs is honed by your plan like a poker player.
Apparent and Cogent Content Inspection The finest, most complete GRE study books consist of clear, comprehensive content review sections that will assist you brush up on your skills for the various GRE places. This should include assistance with GRE vocab and GRE mathematics.
Advice on Developing a GRE Research Strategy It will provide sound tips for spacing and planning out your studying in a means which can allow you to use your time effectively and optimize your score advancement.

Obviously, all of GRE books can not be all things to all people. A fantastic GRE prep book does not necessarily need to have each these attributes to be beneficial, but it will have to meet one or more particular purposes on your prep program at a high quality way. By way of instance, you may have one homework book that is filled with amazing training questions, and yet another that includes a specially good conceptual overview of mathematics. They could both meet a valuable and essential function on your research program!
Ensure that your plan includes snacks.
The Very Best GRE Prep Books
We have combed through the GRE study book heap to supply you with the very best GRE books on the market. Every GRE publication listed is ideal for a particular purpose or audience--think about the one(s) that lineup with your requirements!
These books are created by ETS, the manufacturers of the GRE test. The Official Practice Question novels for Verbal/Analytical Composing and Quant reprint a number of the exact same orienting advice but provide added official training questions.
This set also has a CD with practice tests, but these tests are just like the Powerprep II evaluations, so save yourself the problem using the CD and only download Powerprep II right at no cost.
Cost But note that the latest variants are quite similar into the preceding variants of each these novels, so in the event that you can discover the earlier variants for more affordable, you may want to go with these.
Experts ETS prep substances have one big advantage over the rest of the prep stuff: they comprise real, actual GRE questions. Other homework books and businesses do their best to mimic GRE format, content, and design--and occasionally they get fairly close. But just ETS may provide you official GRE questions. This makes the Power Pack a hugely valuable exercise source, since using ETS questions provides you the maximum GRE-like experience. And the nearer your clinic is to the actual GRE, the more willing you are going to be to confront real GRE questions on test day. Disadvantages While ETS has just one quite huge pro, there are some downsides for their substance to Know about:
The majority of the info on evaluation tips and strategies is accessible free of charge on the internet on the GRE site. That can be true of the whole math content inspection department. So just do not anticipate you are going to be receiving anything new there. This GRE publication is not going to teach you a great deal in the manner of strategies and tricks--you will want to utilize different tools for this. ETS does not wish to exhibit the GRE for a system which may be beaten, as it is their evaluation, and to do this would endanger their self-styled picture as the manufacturers of a test that is highly predictive of grad school achievement. Some (although not all) of those practice questions are available on the internet. Furthermore, there's a few (although not complete) overlap in clinic questions one of the novels. Regrettably, that the Kindle variant is riddled with formatting mistakes--so make this one as a print publication. The response explanations aren't that comprehensive; it is not always apparent how the appropriate answer was attained. Despite its downsides, I urge that many pupils at least receive the Official Guide. This can get one of both extra practice evaluations outside of the Powerprep software. Official ETS evaluations are an excellent--and infrequent--source which produce the Official Guide worthwhile because of that.
That the Powerpack is the thing to do. Just take note that nearly all of the content inspection and orienting advice is readily available for free online. The main value you are going to get out of them is the queries themselves.
Greatest GRE Prep Book for Practice Issues: Manhattan Prep's 5-Lb Novel of Practice Issues Manhattan's 5-lb Novel of Practice Issues offers over 1,000 pages of exercise issues and comprehensive explanations. Purchase of this publication additionally allows you access to an internet bank of further queries--bringing the entire number of queries you've got access to north of 1800.
While you will find a few sample GRE segments which you may take under timed conditions, the vast majority of the novel has practice questions coordinated by element and ability. There is also no content inspection, aside from the review inherent from the response explanations.
Cost Experts Lots of GRE-like queries sorted especially by different abilities, department, and difficulty level. This permits you to drill quite particular regions of weakness. Really comprehensive, step-by-step response explanations that will assist you understand precisely how to reach the right option. Accessibility to internet query banks can allow you to practice answering the questions on a pc, and that's the way you are going to take the actual GRE. Suggestions for how to tackle illustration Analytical Writing prompts. Disadvantages Notice There Are many more Quantitative questions compared to Verbal or Analytical Writing questions. It is likely to acquire bogged down at the sheer quantity of queries. Do not feel as if you want to finish every question in the book. A number of those lower-difficulty mathematics questions could be too straightforward how much the GRE enjoys "tricky" questions. There is a vocab list at the trunk without definitions. This sounds a little out of scope since the book is actually supposed to give practice issues especially. Why do this GRE novel? Get this book for those who require targeted, GRE-style clinic questions past what ETS offers.
We've got the industry's top GRE prep app. Constructed by world-class teachers with 99th percentile GRE scores, the app learns your strengths and flaws through machine learning information science, then customizes your prep schedule to you which you get the best prep potential.
Got a swimming pool of queries, gont dip within it.
The group includes a whopping 8 GRE novels on content inspection and prep (many are pretty slender, but nevertheless). 1 publication is on reading comprehension and composing GRE essays, and you can on text conclusion and sentence equivalence questions.
This is a small repetitive inside the context of this set so I envision that these intro chapters have been included so that individuals who purchase the GRE books separately can get oriented to the evaluation.
In case you don't require the whole set, it is also possible to purchase the books separately. But getting the entire app is your very best value.
PRice Around $96 for eight novels; individual publications for $12-15
Experts That is a very thorough and comprehensive book-based GRE prep application. It's absolutely the most extensive prep novel system available on the current market, with strong content inspection, heaps of practice questions, and techniques for approaching each segment. The clinic issues have quite comprehensive and comprehensive answer explanations. This collection provides you accessibility to six online, section-adaptive evaluations. This is actually amazing clinic for the actual GRE, which can be section-adaptive. Test-taking plans (and section-specific strategies) are all helpful in approaching the evaluation. COns because you can tell from the gap in webpages dedicated to the several subjects, this collection is more detailed for Quant than it's for both segments. That is something to remember if you expect especially fighting Verbal. There are a couple typos in the mathematics practice issues. This critique might in fact be too comprehensive; it is likely to become overwhelmed with the sheer quantity of articles. You truly must be conscious of where you invest your time to get the absolute most from each hour of homework. A number of those test-taking strategies could be too specific. You ought to test the strategies they indicate to determine what works best for you and tweak your total plan as necessary. Why do this GRE novel? In case you have a great deal of time to dedicate to a extensive prep app and you also would like it to come quite much predesigned, this Manhattan Prep GRE place is a superb investment. In case the evaluation is in 3 weeks, do not bother--you will only be overwhelmed with all the content.
You might also need to purchase that a subset of these novels to target a particular content area or segment. By way of instance, if you are great on Quant but wish to dig on Verbal, you can purchase both Verbal-focused novels. This may also provide you with access to this six section-adaptive online evaluations.
If you'd like a full, balanced GRE prep meal, then Manhattan Prep could be the best way to go.
The first section gives an orientation to strategies and the evaluation. The fifth part of the book has added practice issues and 2 practice tests.
The normal edition of this book includes accessibility to two extra practice tests on the internet, as well as the premium variant allows you access to four online evaluations. Continue reading for my ideas on if it is well worth it to spring to the premium version.
Cost Approximately $16 for its Typical, and roughly $22 for its top
This book is excellent for preparing for all these segments particularly. Likewise, this prep book does a fantastic job with Verbal training questions which seem and feel just like actual GRE Verbal queries, and supplies comprehensive answer explanations for the Verbal section. Students enjoyed the test-taking strategies given in this publication, and discovered that the total approach to the evaluation as something which may be handled with methods to be reassuring and useful. COns Most pupils were very disappointed with all the mathematics section, along with the mathematics clinic questions particularly. While some enjoyed the content inspection, nearly everyone believed the questions were composed in a frustrating and perplexing manner. Additionally, there are a few typos and mistakes in the mathematics questions and mathematics response keys. There appears to be occasional difficulty in obtaining online content, that might be frustrating in the event that you'd like to be in a position to do practice tests on your pc. Get this publication for Verbal content inspection and plan, Verbal training questions, and Analytical writing approach. Do not bother with the mathematics section practice issues. If you feel you are going to require a good deal of exercise tests, it may be well worth it to spring to the deluxe edition, particularly if you're worried about carrying a computer-based test. However, most pupils should be OK with the conventional edition.
This manual provides a fairly extensive breakdown of the GRE Quantitative segment, using a concentrate on the more fundamental mathematics skills you want to understand. The publication offers an overall orientation to the part, in depth-breakdowns of the various query types, and also a content inspection department that will assist you review and find out the mathematics concepts you want to understand for your GRE.
Cost Around $10 electronic, $13 paperback
Offers strong, easy-to-follow approaches for assaulting the GRE Quantitative segment and its various query fashions. Gives lots of GRE-style practice issues targeted to particular question types and theories. Has powerful answer explanations. Disadvantages This publication will not get you around 170-scoring degree on its own; the mathematics in the practice issues simply isn't quite tough enough, although the questions mimic the appearance and texture of GRE issues. This is the most frequent criticism among economists. Occasionally the formatting of these practice questions is a bit embarrassing. McGraw-Hill supplies a percent breakdown of the number of of particular issue types you can expect to see about the evaluation which does not look entirely true, so take this with a grain of salt. This publication is aimed at individuals who expect really fighting all the Quantitative section. So get this book if you will need a great deal of assistance with fundamental GRE math. You've Got two choices as Soon as You feel you have mastered the content from the book:
Afford the test confident in your ability to lock a mid-range score, so conscious you will not be completely ready for the most troublesome questions. This will probably be fine for people entering humanities-focused programs. Proceed to a different, stronger GRE prep book after that, such as Manhattan Prep. Does mathematics seem like that to you? McGraw-Hill might be wanted by you.
This GRE publication is mainly a conceptual overview of the mathematics theories underpinning the GRE, with practice issues for all those theories. It provides progressively organized chapters on the vital concepts that build off of one another. Every chapter has practice issues associated with this notion, sorted into "simple," "moderate," "difficult," and "very difficult." There's also an indicator of mathematics concepts plus a diagnostic evaluation in the conclusion.
Cost Kindle variant roughly $8, paperback roughly $26

The difficulty level of questions is indicated as "simple," "moderate," "difficult" and "very difficult," that helps students get a sense of where they're struggling. Strong mathematics students will locate the philosophical explanations and answer explanations in this publication clear, uncomplicated, and intuitive. Disadvantages This publication is a bit on the flip side and describes the GRE segments as being from 800 points. Whilst performing questions which are somewhat tougher than the GRE might help you clinch that 170, there likely is not much usefulness in laboring within the "Very Hard" questions. Maybe not all the queries do a fantastic job approximating the GRE "style" of query. But, these questions nevertheless offer invaluable skills training which can allow you to succeed on the exam. Both conceptual and query explanations are somewhat short--too short for people without a solid math foundation. Additionally they assume that an inherent level of mathematics knowledge that not many pupils taking the GRE have. This GRE study book actually doesn't offer much in the method of plan, therefore look elsewhere for this. Get this book if you're already very proficient at mathematics and are only tuning to get a score at the 90th percentile and above. In this circumstance, this book can help you quickly examine concepts and supply you with plenty of practice problems that will assist you fine-tune your abilities. But if you do not have that strong math foundation, you are going to find this book frustrating.
Barron's GRE is a five-part prep publication that aims to become a comprehensive guide to all areas of the test. The first part goes within the GRE format and offers overall test-taking strategies. The fifth segment includes two full scale practice tests with answer keys.
The Verbal section comprises a comprehensive vocabulary section, and also a math content inspection that is robust is included by the Quantitative section. Purchasing the GRE prep book also provides you access to a online content, including video courses and extra practice issues.
Cost Paperback version prices around $18.
Experts Barron's actually excels in the clinic question section. The queries do a excellent job mimicking the GRE design and cover subject areas the GRE actually addresses. Generally, content inspection is clearly written and comprehensive. There is a hugely powerful vocab segment with 3000 words and their definitions. Barron's also provides some very helpful strategies to deal with the evaluation and its segments. Disadvantages The Barron's queries might not really reach max GRE problem level, so if you are expecting for the 165+ score scope on every section, this might not be the best prep book alternative for you. A select few of those test-taking approaches are somewhat self-contradictory or perplexing. Select what makes sense to youpersonally, and make sure you try out any plans to get a couple of practice sessions until you use them to the GRE! The mathematics department is organised somewhat awkwardly, making that part somewhat hard to browse. If you do not have a great deal of time and you are expecting to earn a couple points of dent improvement in your total score, Barron's is a fantastic selection. It is a yearlong prep publication with great questions and adequate content inspection.
On the other hand, the material likely is not complex enough for people who expect or desire high scores (165+ on each section). Additionally, it is probably too short for folks that want a good deal of assistance. However, for men and women in the center score range who only need a bulge, that is an excellent, affordable choice.
Barron's is GRE prep books' store.
I know I know--flash cards are not a prep book! However, flashcards are a far better approach to research vocab than a publication.

Best MCAT Study guide 2018
Educating students to score high on over 90 standardized exams in the class of their 76-year history, Kaplan is one of the most well-established and omnipresent company leaders in schooling. Unsurprisingly, this test prep giant has a powerful hold in the MCAT market.
Historically, Kaplan has been famous to get an encyclopedic coverage of MCAT subjects, and with a new examination comes new teaching opportunities. Let's see how Kaplan addresses what is new in the MCAT2015 using their Total 7-Book Subject Review. Proceed ahead to our MST score report.)
What are the unique strengths of Kaplan's MCAT Practice and Review materials?
Jeffrey Abrams: the largest strength of Kaplan is that they go into good detail on difficult conceptual topics, which helps drive home the material for pupils. They also have end-of-chapter outlines, which further outline the chapter material and is of particular use for fast assessing old material--particularly in the last 1-2 weeks of studying.
Parth Kothari: Kaplan's detailed pragmatic approach to MCAT practice worked particularly well in the natural chemistry, research and CARS books. The organic chemistry book was quite readable, which is tough for such an abstract subject. The comprehensive CARS approach was a great way to break down a section that gives so many students anxiety, and also the research section wasn't a disappointment either.
Masis Isikbay: Contrary to the EK books, Kaplan also has quite excellent glossaries and indicators in each publication. This can make a massive difference for the student working through the AAMC manual and having difficulty finding a particular term or concept quickly. Although these chapter questions aren't in the MCAT-style multiple choice format, they highlight recall of information within simple recognition of theories. This recall will be a crucial skill to hone if students really need to score in the top percentile on the new MCAT.
What are Kaplan's weaknesses for MCAT Review?
While our first opinions may change after we've completed reviewing other companies' prep resources, below are our preliminary thoughts about the weaker areas within Kaplan's MCAT2015 bundle:
KS: My biggest issue is with Kaplan's test clinic issues--or lack thereof. The CARS publication literally has no training passages, just sample ones inserted in the chapters, and also the other novels have precisely 15 freestanding multiple-choice inquiries per chapter--none of them passage-based and several research-based. The books have neither partial nor full-length practice examinations.
PK: The material inspection and practice is basically separated: Most of the clinic is online, although the online material has some passages which are clinically applicable (unlike the end-of-chapter queries), many appear to only be recycled out of the past. Also, the online part of the 7-book collection is incomplete: The full group of videos, passage-based questions and practice tests are only included in purchasing a Kaplan class, so that they are most likely using these online materials to advertise their courses.
JA: Kaplan also includes extraneous information in its books that is not needed to succeed on the MCAT. As an example, there is reading in Kaplan about the Aristotelian strategy--this is something students studying for the MCAT simply shouldn't squander time on. The Kaplan chapters can be quite text- and - number-heavy, with few demonstrative figures, and sometimes the figures contained aren't participating, and overly complicated or hard to comprehend intuitively.
What is the philosophy behind Kaplan's MCAT Review stuff?
JA: Kaplan's general philosophy is to make sure all material is coated. So, unlike many other resources, they provide lots of detail for your AAMC-specified MCAT content.
PK: the business intends to provide students with something like a condensed set of textbooks that adequately covers the material.
KS: It is philosophically on the other end of the spectrum from Examkrackers: Kaplan instructs to the comprehension of the material instead of teaching to the test (though they've mnemonics and "MCAT Expertise" sidebars that attempt to reconcile the material with the exam).
Within their MCAT research procedures, when should students utilize these online materials?
MI: I would encourage these texts earlier on in the analysis process since they provide a comprehensive profile on most every topic, and there's utility in having all the info in a particular setting (particularly if a student is struggling with theory principles). Nevertheless, these resources aren't great for "getting to the meat" of the subjects, especially with respect to what will most likely be examined on the MCAT, so they can also be utilized as reference material but not to prioritize the information.
PK: Although these novels should not be utilized for 6-8 weeks of study, I think Kaplan would function nicely for a student who's planning on working for 12+ weeks. They will form a comprehensive bundle that students can utilize while supplementing official AAMC materials/questions.
KS: I'd normally use Kaplan as a reference only since its content goes beyond the range of the MCAT, doesn't prioritize high-yield subjects and is ill-suited to visual learners.
For whom do this complete review source be most ideal?
MI: I think students who like a consistent, conventionally organized textbook should use these Kaplan books. The format of chapters or figures does not change as much as in the EK novels, so some students might be distracted by the formatting.
KS: I'd be conservative in my use of Kaplan, largely using it as a reference guide except perhaps for more concrete students who welcome plenty of detail, have a fantastic awareness of what is high-priority MCAT advice, and learn best from straightforward, no-nonsense text.
JA: These books are perfect for students who have some deficiencies in their own content background and that need to perform a fantastic bit of learning. They'll be poor for students who only have 6-8 months to review material, but a solid possible source for students whose foundations are weaker.
PK: Overall I think these substances are excellent for many students as long as particular attention is paid to choosing the best supplemental materials. Kaplan Prep for CARS
Kaplan provides a very comprehensive method of CARS reviewing, going over everything from main notions to key words and how to build that into comprehension passages and assaulting different question types. Kaplan has a lot of good summary sheets of the strategy in the rear of the book to help pupils recall their CARS tools. There are no practice issues in this publication. Some pupils will find this strategy overly complicated and hard to remember on exam day. Bottom Line: Kaplan has an impressively comprehensive CARS reviewing strategy that more detail-oriented students will find comfortingly systematic, while some might find too complex to recall. However, the consensus is that at least some element of Kaplan CARS is going to be helpful to a majority of pupils studying for the MCAT, and the publication will definitely need to be supplemented with training passages.
Inside the Physics/Math publication, there is a statistics chapter that's a good "crash course" on the subject; it covers what will be analyzed on the new MCAT. Kaplan provides a clear explanation for each one of these data theories. Since data does not absolutely demand as many explanatory pictures, aside from a graphs/charts, Kaplan's mathematics- and text-dominated strategy is better suited to explain statistics over various other subjects.
-- Kaplan's data review overall is lacking in practice questions. You will find 15 sectioned-off statistics questions at the end of the chapter, and data programs from the other Kaplan MCAT queries are rarer than favored. -- On p.410-417, Kaplan includes another section discussing charts, tables and graphs. Although this is not a bad idea for a refresher segment, Kaplan must have more of these visual aids prevalent throughout their MCAT books and incorporated into more chapter practice questions. However, the quantity of practice questions is mostly insufficient to truly feel comfortable with the content, and statistics isn't well integrated into Kaplan's other MCAT practice questions in their social and hard sciences books. Kaplan dedicates a full 22 pages to discussing research on the MCAT as a chapter at the Physics/Math book, covering the majority of the MCAT topics demanded from the AAMC. Kaplan's text-dominant presentation of substance works nicely with this particular topic.
-- Kaplan did not completely cover research from the psychosocial field, either in the research section of the Physics book or in the Behavioral Sciences book. However, the online Kaplan materials do provide practice passages related to this particular topic. -- More practice issues, ideally integrated into the other MCAT hard and social sciences novels, is required to supplement Kaplan's topical policy of research. However, their literature will have to be supplemented with more training issues, ideally passage-based and integrated with other MCAT subjects (biology, physics, etc).
This segment is where the Kaplan strategy excels, providing students a middle-range quantity of information about a broad array of topics. In comparison to Examkrackers, Kaplan's flow of this content appears to be organized and intuitive, which is important for articles understanding. The corresponding practice passages online are extremely MCAT-applicable and research-based. Kaplan has some great summary tables which condense and organize notable amounts of data, including in the Child Development Milestones table on p. 35 or the Impression Management Strategy dining table on p. 327. -- Unlike Examkrackers, Kaplan lacks a strong introductory explanation on the best way best to approach this new MCAT section and the way the student can avoid using personal biases while selecting test answers. -- The images and at times even the info can be irrelevant to a student's MCAT studies. For example, on p.230, students will probably not have to know that Jung saw himself as a Tibetan Mandela, and on p. 127 they most likely don't have to observe a baby playing peek-a-boo.
Bottom Line: Kaplan provides a solid overview and organization of MCAT-based sociological and psychological theories. But, Kaplan does not provide a strong general approach for this new segment. This publication also comes with a notable amount of extraneous data and graphics and its own practice passage-based problems are separately featured online rather than integrated into the publication.
The organization of this book is intuitive and mirrors the flow of medical college biochemistry courses. The AAMC substances are covered pretty widely, which makes this part among the strongest things in the Kaplan series. -- In spite of having a separate biochemistry novel, some segments are not covered adequately. For instance, there aren't any visual aids illustrating the often perplexing combined inhibition or competitive inhibition of enzyme kinetics (p. 53), and there are too few examples of this frequently-tested titration curves. -- Kaplan also tends to over-complicate some topics. As an example, the Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz voltage equation on p. 279 is likely not needed for the MCAT as well as the antibody structure provided on p. 76 is quite a bit more complicated than required for the examination.
Bottom Line: For students who struggle with biochem, Kaplan has a comprehensive biochemistry book that may offer a solid comprehension of MCAT-tested material. Students who have taken biochemistry and done well, though, will probably find they don't need the depth of the Kaplan book to do well on the examination. Either way, in case a student does decide to use this book, (s)he will need to supplement with additional MCAT-style passage-based questions.
Kaplan Test Prep for General Chemistry
Kaplan succeeds at giving a comprehensive overview of this AAMC chemistry content and there are only a few openings in the content. This chemistry book is particularly great for students who need a refresher on overall chemistry, because the Kaplan text does not assume any prior knowledge. -- there's additional miscellaneous information which will not be analyzed directly on the MCAT (e.g. that the electrodeposition equation on p.423) or need to be memorized (Van der Waals equation on p. 278). -- Some select subjects require more examples to show how to problem-solve, e.g. with titrations on p. 352. -- As with the other books in the Kaplan series, pupils will need to find extra practice problems, especially passage-based ones, to be ready for the MCAT.
Bottom Line: Kaplan has compiled a very good foundational publication in general chemistry that will be excellent for pupils who need an extensive topical overview. As consistent with other Kaplan texts, there is a de-emphasis on test-taking shortcuts along with the publication will need to be supplemented with additional MCAT-style problems. Kaplan Prep for Organic Chemistry
Pupils utilizing this Kaplan book will probably be well-prepared, and even perhaps over-prepared, for the MCAT organic chemistry content. The practice and review material is obviously organized, very practical and quite readable for this abstract topic, along with the end-of-chapter outlines provide a wonderful summary of the material. Kaplan does a particularly good job describing fundamental organic chemistry concepts that are commonly tested and/or potentially confusing to students, like distinguishing enantiomers out of diastereomers utilizing R/S configurations (p. 41), correctly rotating a Fischer projection to acquire the identical chemical (p. 47), distinguishing protic out of aprotic solvents (p. 86) and providing some of the funniest pictures we have discovered of molecular orbital combinations and hybridizations (p. 63-68). This specific text appears to possess more exam applications than Kaplan's other MCAT books. For instance, they've got an example on p. 98 of figuring out the intermediates and final products of a reaction, in a setup which just mirrors actual MCAT questions we have seen. The examples in the book only show the simplified molecules. To Kaplan's charge, the online materials do supply some passages with more complex molecules. -- Some motives may be clearer, such as the ones for specific lab techniques (e.g. separations and spectroscopy) and also for carboxylic acid derivatives.
Bottom Line: Kaplan's straightforward approach really works to explain some complicated organic chemistry theories, so keep this book in mind if a particular topic is tricky to understand. As before, supplement with practice issues from elsewhere.
Kaplan Exam Prep for Biology
The pictures and examples in the biology book are the very best in comparison to other Kaplan novels in the MCAT series, e.g. in the section on the nervous system and action abilities. Kaplan does a particularly good job inside this book covering complex subjects in-depth, e.g. the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system on p. 175, the negative feedback mechanism, mentioned multiple times, along with the forces affecting the Bowman's capsule. Kaplan did include information that is often analyzed but not commonly highlighted in different texts, e.g. that the trajectory of the semen throughout the entire body. -- Students may find this book a bit less engaging than they'd prefer to your subject matter. -- there's still a maldistribution of external emphasis with too much given to some subjects (e.g. cardiovascular and digestive processes, the prokaryotic flagellum arrangement) and not enough attention given to additional topics (e.g. oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in red blood cells, no chromosomal number monitoring in meiosis pictures on p. 61).
Bottom Line: This Kaplan book seems to have the most visual assistance of this MCAT set and uses them comparatively well to the topic matter. Its very best attribute is its capacity to break down complex content into straightforward, readable explanations. This book also needs practice difficulty nutritional supplements.
Kaplan Practice for Profession
This publication has quite a logical demonstration, starting with the most basic classes and working up to increasingly difficult subjects. The mathematics, research and data figures will also be put in this publication - a extremely organized approach. Kaplan provides example problems with detailed answers - but these are more textbook-style than MCAT-style issues. The MCAT Experience segments features throughout the physics book are useful, e.g. the projectile movement shortcut taught on p. 23. Their thermodynamics segment is notably clear and well-taught. -- The MCAT irrelevancy of some lesson details really stands out (e.g. on p. 5 where they teach that the British machine unit of mass is a slug and on p. 66 in which they reveal a six-pulley system that is clearly too complex for an MCAT problem). -- There is a marked lack of supporting images and test-taking strategies for these physics topics. For instance, among the numerous gaps in the torque segment, there is never a vector diagram of forces drawn for the problem on p. 33. Projectile motion can be only given one little picture, and the fluids chapter didn't incorporate some quite classical MCAT presentations of the subject, like those using Torricelli's law. -- The Kaplan physics lessons and questions tend to get disconnected from the MCAT format and emphasis on chemical applications. For instance, on p. 133-134, there is a separate talk of fluids in physiology but no accompanying MCAT-type queries to examine students' understanding.
Bottom Line: While this Kaplan book does technically cover a broad range of official MCAT content, the vast majority of our Special Ops Team would not pick Kaplan because their principal physics resource. Just like other test prep companies' materials, pupils using Kaplan physics will need to find supplementary MCAT-style practice problems.
As of mid-April, when you haven't seen them, we've also assessed Examkrackers and The Princeton Review's stuff.

Best MCAT course 2018 complete review!
Educating students to score high on over 90 standardized examinations in the class of the 76-year history, Kaplan is among the most well-established and omnipresent business leaders in schooling. Unsurprisingly, this test prep giant has a very powerful hold in the MCAT market.

Which are Kaplan's flaws for MCAT Review?
While our first opinions may change after we have completed assessing other companies' prep tools, below are our preliminary ideas about the poorer regions within Kaplan's MCAT2015 package:
The CARS publication literally does not have any training passages, just sample ones inserted in the chapters, and also the other novels have just 15 freestanding multiple-choice inquiries each chapter--not one of these passage-based and several research-based. The novels have neither tight nor full-length practice examinations.

PK: Overall I feel these substances are excellent for many students provided that particular attention is paid to choosing the finest supplemental materials. Kaplan Prep for CARS
Kaplan provides an extremely complete method of CARS reviewing, moving over everything from primary notions to keywords and how to build into comprehension passages and assaulting different query types. Kaplan Exam Prep for Biology

Projectile motion can be just given one little picture, and also the fluids chapter didn't incorporate some quite classical MCAT demonstrations of the topic, like the ones utilizing Torricelli's law. -- The Kaplan physics classes and queries tend to get disconnected from the MCAT format and focus on chemical applications. For example, on p. 133-134, there's another talk of fluids in structure but no accompanying MCAT-type queries to examine pupils' understanding.
Bottom Line: While this Kaplan publication does technically cover a wide range of official MCAT articles, the vast majority of our Special Ops Team wouldn't pick Kaplan because their principal physics source. Just like other test prep companies' substances, pupils using Kaplan physics have to find supplementary MCAT-style practice issues.
As of mid-April, when you have not seen them, we have also assessed Examkrackers and The Princeton Review's stuff.

"[D] Confession as an AI researcher; seeking advice"- Detail: I have a confession to make.I was a CS major in college and took very few advanced math or stats courses. Besides basic calculus, linear algebra, and probability 101, I took only one machine learning class. It was about very specific SVMs/decision tree/probabilistic graphical models that I rarely encounter today.I joined a machine learning lab in college and was mentored by a senior PhD. We actually had a couple of publications together, though they were nothing but minor architecture changes. Now that I’m in grad school doing AI research full-time, I thought I could continue to get away with zero math and clever lego building. Unfortunately, I fail to produce anything creative. What’s worse, I find it increasingly hard to read some of the latest papers, which probably don’t look complicated at all to math-minded students. The gap in my math/stats knowledge is taking a hefty toll on my career. For example, I’ve never heard of the term “Lipschitz” or “Wasserstein distance” before, so I’m unable to digest the Wasserstein GAN paper, let alone invent something like that by myself. Same with f-GAN (http://ift.tt/2rt6ydc), and SeLU (http://ift.tt/2se4yti). I don’t have the slightest clue what the 100-page SeLU proof is doing. The “Normalizing Flow” (http://ift.tt/2u0538k) paper even involves physics (Langevin Flow, stochastic differential equation) … each term seems to require a semester-long course to master. I don’t even know where to start wrapping my head around.I’ve thought about potential solutions. The top-down approach is to google each unfamiliar jargon in the paper. That doesn’t work at all because the explanation of 1 unknown points to 3 more unknowns. It’s an exponential tree expansion. The alternative bottom-up approach is to read real analysis, functional analysis, probability theory textbooks. I prefer a systematic treatment, but …reading takes a huge amount of time. I have the next conference deadline to meet, so I can’t just set aside two months without producing anything. My advisor wouldn’t be happy.but if I don’t read, my mindless lego building will not yield anything publishable for the next conference. What a chicken-and-egg vicious cycle.the “utility density” of reading those 1000-page textbooks is very low. A lot of pages are not relevant, but I don’t have an efficient way to sift them out. I understand that some knowledge might be useful some day, but the reward is too sparse to justify my attention budget. The vicious cycle kicks in again.in the ideal world, I can query an oracle with “Langevin flow”. The oracle would return a list of pointers, “given your current math capability, you should first read chapter 7 of Bishop’s PRML book, and then chapter 10 of information theory, and then chapter 12 of …”. Google is not such an oracle for my purpose.I’m willing to spend 1 - 2 hours a day to polish my math, but I need a more effective oracle. Is it just me, or does anyone else have the same frustration? What online courses, textbooks, or “meta-guidelines” do you recommend?. Caption by Neutran. Posted By: www.eurekaking.com
