Metallic glass gears up for 'cobots,' coatings, and more

Where are the robot assistants we were promised?
For all the space that robots have occupied in the popular imagination for the last hundred years—and although the number of real-world automatons has been growing for decades—most people’s interactions with them remain limited to a hands-free vacuum or a child’s smart toy.
There are two main reasons for this, according to Glenn Garrett, chief technology officer of a NASA spinoff company, Amorphology Inc.: cost and safety. Most automated machinery is still only affordable to large manufacturers that can make major investments and expect long-term savings. And while robots take up more and more of the factory floor, they’re generally segregated from their human colleagues due to safety concerns—largely oblivious to their surroundings, they’re strong and dangerously clumsy.
In the mid-1990s, two Northwestern University professors patented an alternative concept under a new term: cobots. Collaborative robots, designed to cooperate with humans, would be smaller, smarter, more responsive, and more aware, with tighter self-control and better manners all around. In the years since, leaps in artificial intelligence and sensors have made these “friendlier” robots a reality but cost still prevents their widespread adoption.
“That’s where the robotics industry is going,” Garrett said, noting that a handful of cobots are already making lattes and sandwiches, for example. “But if it costs $40,000, it’s out of reach for non-industrial applications.”
The biggest cost drivers, however, aren’t always the advanced software and sensors. Instead, he said, it often comes down to some of the most rudimentary machine components: gears. “High-precision gears are at least half the cost of robotic arms.”
Now, Pasadena, California-based Amorphology hopes to drop the price of cobots with advances originally made for robots that were never intended for human interaction—NASA’s planetary rovers.
Rovers Adapt to Martian Climate
Gears on NASA’s rovers, like most gears on Earth, are made of steel, which is both strong and wear resistant. But steel gears need liquid lubrication, and oils don’t work well in frigid environments like the lunar or Martian surface. So, NASA’s Curiosity rover, for example, spends about three hours warming up lubricants every time it prepares to start rolling, using up about a quarter of the discretionary energy that could otherwise be used for science, said Doug Hofmann, principal scientist of the Materials Development and Manufacturing Technology group at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “So that’s really frustrating. It would be great if those gears could just turn on and drive.”
With an eye toward solving this and other materials-related issues, in 2010, JPL hired Hofmann, then a research scientist at Caltech with a background in materials science and engineering. NASA funded a new metallurgy facility at JPL to explore alternatives for gears and develop new metal alloys.
From his days at Caltech, which manages JPL, Hofmann was familiar with an emerging class of specially engineered materials called bulk metallic glass, also known as amorphous metals. These are metal alloys that can be rapidly cooled from liquid to solid before their atoms form the crystalline lattice structure that is common to all other metals. Instead, the atoms are randomly arranged like those of glass, giving the materials properties of both glass and metal.
Depending on their constituent elements—often including zirconium, titanium, and copper—they can be very strong, and because they aren’t crystalline, they’re elastic. Most compositions also form a hard, smooth ceramic oxide surface, Hofmann explained, noting that these properties together afford gears made of some amorphous metals a long lifetime with no lubrication. “That’s, of course, really important to NASA, because you can run your gearboxes without lubricating them.”
Currently, the Cold Operable Lunar Deployable Arm (COLDArm), a collaborative effort between JPL and the company Motiv Space Systems for lunar missions, is expected to use bulk metallic glass gears to operate in temperatures down to minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit without the need for a heating source.
A strain wave gear converts the fast, low-torque rotation of an engine into slow, precise, forceful motion. Casting for Affordable Robot Parts
But amorphous metals have another property that makes them attractive for gears on Earth: “These alloys are designed to have low melting temperatures, because to make a metallic glass, you have to cool the alloy faster than it can crystallize,” Hofmann said. This low melting point, together with their native strength and the fact that their volume hardly changes upon solidifying, makes bulk metallic glasses easy to use in injection molding, which can dramatically reduce the cost of making parts like gears.
Most high-strength metals have high melting points. They can’t be cast with molds because, in molten form, they would simply melt the mold. And steel needs to be rolled or forged to strengthen it, which also precludes molding. So, gears typically start as steel billets that are “machined”—cut, ground, milled, and drilled—into their final shape. Tiny gears, like those for small cobots, are especially challenging—and costly.
The most difficult, expensive gear component to machine from a steel block is one of the most common in robotic arms: the flexspline, an extremely thin-walled, flexible cup with a toothed rim. This is the centerpiece of what’s known as a strain wave gear assembly, which offers better precision, higher torque, and lower backlash than other gear sets. This eliminates positioning errors that would be compounded in a robotic limb with multiple joints.
“It’s a very strange-looking gear if you’ve never seen it, but it’s the heart and soul of a precision robot,” said Hofmann.
This is where molding with amorphous metals promises the greatest savings: it costs about half as much as machining strain wave gears from steel, Hofmann said.
Molding small, high-performance planetary and strain wave gears became the central business plan for Amorphology, which Hofmann cofounded in 2014. Through Caltech, the company licensed several patents for technology he had developed for NASA.
Meanwhile, he and colleagues continued pursuing new materials for spacecraft at both the metallurgy lab and JPL’s Additive Manufacturing Center. A number of patents and technologies led Hofmann to found a second spinoff company focused on using amorphous metals in coatings, 3D printing, and other non-gear-related applications. Both were backed by the same venture capital group, and in 2020 they merged under the Amorphology name, combining about 30 patents and patent applications for the technology from JPL.
A Market Beyond Mars
That year, the merged company finished its move into a new, 13,000-square-foot manufacturing facility where about 15 people now work, mostly making and testing prototype pieces for small gear assemblies for several customers. Amorphology’s first and largest customer is one of the world’s foremost manufacturers of strain wave gears.
At least one other customer has hired the company to coat consumer electronics parts with metallic glass, making them more durable, indicating another market with immediate potential, said Stephen Ceplenski, chief growth officer at Amorphology.
Hofmann noted that gears that can operate without lubrication are also of interest to businesses like food manufacturing, where lubricants can become contaminants.
Meanwhile, many of the company’s other patents for JPL technology—all licensed from Caltech—are probably still years away from commercialization, although they are in fields that are gaining heavy interest. Among these are new alloys and advanced metal 3D printing technologies, from thermal spray additive manufacturing to ultrasonic welding.
Amorphology is not the first company to commercialize innovations in bulk metallic glass from JPL and Caltech, but Garrett noted that creating a startup based on new materials is notoriously difficult. If lubrication-free gears or low-cost flexsplines find a long-term market, “that would be a huge step towards sustained commercial success for bulk metallic glass,” he said. “The research for the Mars rovers would be directly responsible for that.”

To perform a one-footer, remove one cleat from the pedal and rest that foot safely on the frame of the trainer. Concentrate on 30 seconds of smooth, fluid circles using just one foot. Switch feet and take two minutes of easy spin with both feet as recovery. The next drill is four 30-second spin-ups with two minutes’ recovery. To perform a spin-up, start at 90 rpm in a moderate gear. Gradually increase your cadence to 95, 100, 105 rpm and so on while still in that same gear. After 15 seconds of increasing cadence, get to your fastest spin which is still very smooth (no hopping around in the saddle) and hold that for 15 seconds. Take a full two minutes of easy circles between each for recovery.
Interval ride. After a solid warm-up, shift into a higher gear and commit to going very strong for two minutes. You can determine how intense that effort should be with a heart rate monitor, by rate of perceived effort or by breath rate. Then, spin easy for three minutes. Start with three rounds, and as fitness develops, go to four or five rounds. After that, increase the duration of the effort. Eventually, reduce the recovery time.
Steady state. After a solid warm-up, settle into a pace that will last 15-30 minutes. Make this a challenge, but not nearly as intense as the effort in the interval ride. Again, use either heart rate, perceived effort or breath rate to decide on the intensity. Hold this effort steady and strong for the full duration, and concentrate on good pedaling mechanics. Be sure to leave plenty of time for a quality cool-down.

These three main categories require outside riding to truly develop, and should not be ignored. With this said, getting inside and onto the trainer does offer some valuable opportunity.

● Specificity of Intervals: We tend to prescribe training as a combination of effort (power, RPE or heart rate) with a wide range of specific RPM play. A backbone of our training is what we label as end of range'. Many intervals are either very low cadence, or strength-endurance as we call it, as well as some very high RPM work at the top end.
It can be a challenge to ride to suitable terrain outside, but the trainer offers immediate and controllable intervals in which you can mimic sustained efforts to train physiology, without the limiter of your terrain.
The Golden Rules
When adopting the use of a cycling trainer, we have a few golden rules for all riders to follow.
● Always ride with great posture. There is no excuse for riding with locked elbows, tense shoulders, and hips rotated back on your seat. Ride like the rider you want to be. If you ingrain positive postural habits, they will be there on the race course.
● Make your pedal stroke fluid. We always coach the cue tension on the chain. When riding inside, you have the chance to understand, appreciate and apply fluid and smooth pedaling. If you are a quad-focused rider, you can feel and "see" the chain bouncing. An opportunity for refinement and becoming a more fluid rider.
● Execute the intent. You have a controlled environment, execute your training as intended. For me, this is the intended output, but also at the cadence (RPM) that is the goal of an interval.
● Take it outside. Whenever you are riding inside, always keep a lens on how this applies to my outside riding. Your races and events are outside, so join the dots on how your effort applies to becoming a better outside rider.
In short, embrace the trainer. It is a wonderful tool in your performance arsenal, but remember that your ultimate mission is to become a better bike rider outside. Utilizing the benefits of the trainer, then applying those habits, lessons and intervals to the outside world is your optimal performance lens to frame its role in your overall development and race readiness.

Properly set up your bike on the trainer.

You're more likely to stick with your training plan if you can keep it from getting boring. Set up your bike and trainer in front of the TV to catch up on your favorite sitcoms, movies, the news, or sports events. Or, crank up your favorite motivational music. Some people even catch up on reading by putting a book or magazine on a stand in front of their bike.
Dress like you're riding outside on a hot day.
Wear the same cycling-specific clothes that you normally wear for your outdoor riding, i.e. cycling shorts, jersey, and shoes (your helmet is optional, unless you don't follow Tip #1!). These clothes provide the same benefits of comfort and moisture management indoors as they do outdoors.
Listen to the rhythm of your wheel.

John’s reflection stared back at him, hair slicked back and button-up on, a far cry from the white t-shirt and flannel he usually wore. His flight to Metropolis was set to leave in three hours, but since the nearest airport was over an hour away away from the farm he’d have to leave early to get there on time. Of course he could’ve flown the distance in three minutes but he didn’t want to miss the truck ride with his parents. “John, let’s get a move on,” his mom called. He put his new glasses on to finish the transformation into yet another facade of himself in order to hide his true identity.
It got overwhelming to be so many things at once. Different personas he had to keep in check from melding together so that the others wouldn’t be put in danger. He was Yun - Seo, the last son of Krypton sent careening to Earth when both his planet, and his people exploded. He was John Lang, the farmer boy bound for bigger and better things in Metropolis. And he was Superman, the man of steel that worked to help others, and maybe even save the world every so often. What did all of these personas have in common though? They were all very very lonely.
His origins as an alien refugee meant he was different. He was other. Once he learned of his powers he actively avoided interaction with other kids, worried he would do something to hurt them, even when he was the gentlest little boy anyone could ever meet. Now that he was venturing into Metropolis the only people he was leaving behind were his parents and his dog.
The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting shadows and spirits over the little farmhouse and whisps of corn. He hated it when the sun set, and not just because the ball of fire was where his powers originated from, but because it was just another reminder that deep down he was on his own, not even the sun sticking around for company. Maybe he’d find someone in Metropolis. For now he couldn’t dwell on that dream though, he was starting a new job in a new city, away from the small town he was used to.
“Kibum Paek,” a hand stuck out from behind a newspaper ,” your new boss here at the Daily Planet. Let’s get down to business, this way.” He abruptly stood up from his desk and led him through the maze of cubicles, stopping at one where a few people were gathered. Paek rapped his finger on the divider to get their attention, and that’s when he met you. ”Everyone, this is John Lang, our newest reporter joining the team. Let's all do our best to welcome him and show him the ropes.”
You stood up first, introducing yourself before shaking his hand, your palm warm in his. “Welcome to The Planet,“ you beamed and he was instantly put at ease, but still feeling a little shy. He gave you a polite close-lipped smile, briefly meeting your eyes as he clutched the strap of his saddle bag and was ushered to his desk that was right across the aisle from yours.
“So John, where are you from,” you asked later that day in the break room, popping in to make a fresh brew, staying to chat while you added cream and sugar.
From that point on, catching up over coffee was a tradition, you always appearing at his desk with a steaming mug at the end of work, made just the way he liked it. Over a period of months the conversations drifted from more facile, like shared complaints about Paek’s “don’t apologize just be better mantra” to more personal and intimate topics. The things that made you both laugh, upbringing and childhoods, you obviously sharing more about the latter than him. But he appreciated the effort you made to befriend him, even if he didn’t always return the sentiment. In his mind it was for a good, if not a lonesome reason.
“Uh, Smallville, Kansas,” he told you.
Your eyes widened in surprise and you laughed. “Well, you’re a long way from home.”
He chuckled and pushed up his glasses. You had no idea.
Months had passed and John could safely say he had been hit with a dilemma. He enjoyed your company, he truly did, often reliving your encounters in his mind when he went back to his cold, quiet apartment. But he also knew that you would eventually find out about his “side job” as a hero, there being only so many excuses he could make as to why he would come back from a bathroom break with soot stains in his hair. That knowledge though, ran the risk of you being in danger, something he absolutely wanted to avoid. But it's hard to steer someone when they’re headed straight into a moving train at the speed of light. Much to his dismay you were headed straight towards conflict with none other than the biggest thorn in John’s side.
The greedy sociopathic megalomaniac (your words, not his) that was Kyungsoo Kim was planning something BIG, and you were intent on breaking the story. He always admired your tenacity, however he worried for your safety, even if it was technically required of the job to be put in sticky situations for the sake of the report.
Kim was notorious for shutting down news outlets and investigators that were digging too much into his business. He’d be lying if he said he didn’t listen in on your interviews you conducted with your sources. Sometimes becoming so engrossed in what you were saying halfway across the city he would zone out while staring at his computer screen for minutes on end. He received a few nasty glares from Paek as a result, but it was worth it if it meant he knew you were safe.
It all came to a head though when you discovered Kim was planning on creating a gene splicing therapy marketed towards the public. An anonymous tip sent to you revealed that Kim planned on using the DNA editing software to give regular human beings superpowers, thereby morphing them into metahumans. With the corrupt types the business magnate attracted, there was the possibility that things would go awry for the citizens of Metropolis, possibly even the whole world if criminals were given the powers of Gods. The powers of Superman.
While you were keeping tabs on Kyungsoo Kim, he was most certainly doing the same for you. He knew you were poking around where you shouldn't have been. After numerous attempts at trying to buy your silence and intimidate you, finally Kim finally decided that if he couldn’t gag you, he’d just throttle you instead.
One day you left work early to get a testimonial, promising to be back in time for coffee. Hours passed, it was nearing nine o’clock and he had already warmed your coffee with his heat vision ten times. No call, no text, no update. He got desperate though when he realized he couldn’t hear your heartbeat. The comforting little thunk that he always heard in the back of his mind noticeably absent. It was then that he heard it. Your strangled shouts of distress coming from the other end of the city.
Thank heavens he was in an alley, headed towards your apartment, the speed at which he ripped off his clothes to reveal his suit must’ve been a new record before he sprung into the air. The force broke the sound barrier, causing a ripple effect that rattled the surrounding buildings.
And there you were, falling from the top of KimCorp. Tower. Everything slowed for him as he pushed his body to go faster, your figure drifting mid air, fear palpable on your face. He caught you with ease, your panicked shouts diffusing in a little gasp at feeling the pressure of him against you when seconds before you were free falling. He didn’t bother to deal with Kim, more focused on getting you somewhere safe. He deposited you on top of the Daily Planet building, raising himself up some ten feet, the dimming light of the evening obscuring his face from view.
“Are you alright ma’am,” he asked, putting on his “professional” voice. Your hair was wind whipped, pupils dilated from the adrenaline rush, and your heart was thudding faster than a horse.
“John, you can come down. I know it’s you.” Smart as a whip, as always.
Following the earlier debacle you both decided to unwind. You explained to him that the meeting was a trap, having arrived at the location you were chloroformed and thrown into the back of a van before waking up to Kim's bald head staring at you before promptly being thrown off the building. He unfolded his entire backstory to you, the ups and downs, discovering his genetic line, the people he’s saved. All of this was said over coffee and a bag of chips after John flew down to a little bodega, Superman get-up and all to retrieve snacks and drinks from a very shocked cashier.
“So you’re one of the last Kryptonians alive and your parents adopted you after you crash landed here,“ you recounted to which he nodded,” you discovered a ship in the Arctic that contained your people’s history and the suit where you learned of your origins. You came here to lead a lowbrow-ear to the ground kind of life and you have a cousin named Tiffany, a.k.a Superwoman who lives in National City?”
“Bingo.”
“Wow.”
“Yep,’ he popped his lips, sipping on his coffee. It was silent for a moment, both of you breathing in the moment. A slight chill flowed through the air and you shivered, John immediately taking notice and wrapping his cape around you.
“How’d you know it was me,” he asked, swirling the contents of his little paper cup.
“Johnny I may not have x-ray vision but I could recognize my best friend anywhere,” you replied with a laugh, pulling him closer to you and laying your head on his shoulder. At that moment he felt like he was weightless, suspended in the clouds as warm rays of sunlight bathed his form. He felt like he could fly a few laps around the globe without getting tired; or lift the whole planet he was that…that... happy. He was happy. He finally could say he had a best friend.
“Johnny?” He questioned, unable to hide his joy.
“Yeah, a nickname.”
“I’ve never had anybody call me Johnny before.”
“Wait, you’re telling me no one ever gave you a nickname, your parents? Friends?” He shook his head no, the movement causing your hair to tickle his chin.
“I like it though,” he admitted, closing his eyes, floating in serenity.
And he did. He liked it alot. This was the first time in a long time Johnny had felt comfortable opening up to someone about himself. Being vulnerable without the fear of doing harm and being harmed. He realized that he could use his alter ego as a source of protection. To be your light, be your hero. But call it silly— ludicrous even, that the man of steel, impervious to bullets, crack a mountain with a single punch, invincible Superman felt safe and at peace wrapped up from the cold with a simple human.
“I’ve never had one before,” he said offhandedly.
“Mm,” you hummed in question, peering up at him.
“A friend,” he clarified,” I’ve never had a friend.”
Your arm tightened around him on instinct at his heart wrenching confession. You were pretty sure you were crushing him against you but he made no sign of discomfort. Probably the alien genes. You knew Johnny was shy and took a while to open up, but the sacrifices he made in his personal life to try to appear normal finally dawned on you. A bittersweet smile appeared on your face as you peered at the horizon, hoping Johnny would never have to be pulled from the safe haven you two were in. “Well, you’ve got one now. And I promise, I’m not going anywhere.”
The sun was just setting, blushing pigments of pink and orange kissing their eyes as they sat with each other. He nuzzled into you further, and you took his hand, your palm warm in his. Maybe sunsets weren’t so bad afterall.

Evil Zane Chapter 6
The team returns to the Birchwood Forest as a last resort to save Zane...if they come up empty handed then Zane will have to be destroyed.

Chapter 6
The heels of the green ninja sank ever so softly in the snow as the small party approached a birchwood tree that was about twenty times as thick as the others. The bright sun above them reflected off of the snow and the environment was blinding white and still, as if it was anticipating something to happen.
Jay, who was the only one in the party to have been at the tree home before, was looking around the clearing with fear struck in his eyes. “Jay, calm down- what are you afraid of?” Nya asked.
“Tree Horns,” Jay grumbled, and Lloyd could tell that he had bad memories of those creatures. “I don’t see any of them hiding, but that can change. We need to take cover.”
Lloyd glanced back up into the sky where the Bounty sat levitating. With the danger of giant woodland creatures, the forest was not a safe place for a giant flying ship. Cole, Kai and Misako were keeping watch from afar. Lloyd turned to assist his uncle.
“How interesting,” Wu mumbled to his nephew. “I fought in a great battle here, with your father by my side.”
“My father?” Lloyd asked. He always loves hearing Wu tell stories about the great Garmadon.
“Here was a disastrous battle fought during the First Serpentine War.” Sensei began as Nya and Jay slowed their speed to listen in. “We thought we had defeated the Anacondrai army but that was when Chen turned the elemental masters onto each other. After that-“ Sensei was interrupted with a loud clang.
Jay tripped on something and face planted into the snow with a soft crunch. Nya, Lloyd, and Sensei all burst into laughter as Jay spat out snow. “Very funny, guys,” He groaned before checking to see what he tripped on. Brushing away the snow, the team was surprised to see something gold and shiny hidden beneath the snow.
They all bent down and wiped the snow off of the giant object, revealing a huge robot with two shoulder blasters. Jay smiled, recalling his memory. “I remember this guy! Zane must have fought him when he ran ahead.” The blue ninja, with snow still on his face, turned to Lloyd. “This robot’s job is to scare away the Tree Horns. Well, it was, until Zane destroyed his control panel.” Jay pointed at the small rusted box on the back of the robot.
The gold metal was rusted and dull from sitting in the snow for years. Lloyd touched the metal gingerly, and he could feel the chill and lack of life in the steel. Finally, his eyes drifted to a symbol carefully carved on the back of the robot’s head. “That’s the same symbol that is on Zane’s chest door, right?” Lloyd asked, pointing at the marks. The team glanced down at the head, and Nya and Jay nodded.
Lloyd looked again at the robot, but this time he was suddenly blinded with a vision.
Instead of looking at the Tree Horn fighting robot, Lloyd found himself looking at Zane.
Lloyd flinched and gasped, falling backwards into the snow. “Lloyd are you okay?” Nya asked. The team looked at him with confused and worried looks.
Lloyd, panting, looked back at the robot, but Zane had disappeared. The image of Zane was burned into his mind: the dullness of his titanium steel, the rust forming in the cracks, the dents and deformities covering his body, his control panel on his back shattered and destroyed beyond repair, and his eyes that held no light.
Lloyd shook his head, pushing the image of destroyed Zane out of his head. “Nothing, I just thought I saw something move.” Nya helped the green ninja to his feet, and he brushed the snow off of his casts. “We should repair him if possible so he can continue to protect the home.”
Jay nodded in agreement. “I can see what I can do to him in the tree home.” He looked over to Nya and together they lifted the giant robot out of the snow.
A surprised look crossed Nya’s face. “For a giant robot, he’s fairly light,” she noted. Jay laughed. “He’s designed that way so he doesn’t sink into the snow.”
“Smart,” she said. Sensei chuckled as he opened the door to the tree home.
“Whoa…” Lloyd and Nya gasped together as they stared down the winding staircase to a circular bottom.
“Would you look at this place!” Nya exclaimed, her eyes lit up in excitement. Jay chuckled. “That’s what I said when I saw it.” He confessed. Sensei looked down and nodded, as if recalling a past memory. The team began to descend.
With a loud thud, Jay and Nya placed the large robot on the ground as Lloyd reached the bottom stair. The air in the tree was crisp but dusty and it was quite evident that the place had not been touched since the last time the ninja paid a visit. A bed that was perfectly made hid underneath the staircase, with a side table that held a filmy rag and a dust-covered picture frame. Lloyd walked over and lifted the picture up, sliding the dust off with his fingers.
In the frame was Zane with his falcon perched on his arm as he stood with a middle-aged Dr. Julien. Blinking, Lloyd suddenly realized just how old Zane was. “Zane’s been around for….a really long time…hasn’t he?” Lloyd asked, turning to the team. Jay was leaning over the giant robot while Sensei Wu and Nya looked around.
Wu nodded. “It would appear that Zane has existed for much longer than you all, possibly a good number of decades.”
“Decades?” Nya exclaimed as she picked up a wooden frog toy that was covered in dust. “Could he be older than you, Sensei?”
Wu laughed but didn’t respond. Lloyd looked back down at the picture, but his eyes drifted to the name on his casts again. The conversation he had with the young boy reappeared in his mind. Lloyd remembered what he had told Nelson- “Being a ninja isn’t easy because we deal with sacrifices and loss as well as battles and victory. You don’t have to be a ninja to do good things, you just need to do what’s right and to help others.” Looking at the photo, a sudden burst of determination surged through his body. He silently promised Dr. Julien that he would save his son and then sat the picture back down on the bedside table.
“Hey guys, check this out.” Nya called out as she rummaged through some blueprints at the main desk. “There’s blueprints for the giant robot we found…apparently it’s named the Guardian.”
Jay scooted in next to her and lifted another blueprint. “And this is one of the blueprints for Zane!” he exclaimed. Nya carefully inspected it, then gasped. “This is it! This is the software page.”
Lloyd looked over her shoulder. “Wow- there’s a ton of information on this sheet.” Nya nodded, but kept looking. Lloyd looked down at the table where another blue sheet caught his eye. Reaching around the girl, he took the paper and looked it over. “Woah,” he finally said.
“What is it?” Nya asked, looking back.
“This sheet is for the software of the Guardian,” Lloyd started, pointing at the lifeless robot. “But…” he continued, turning the page around. “It’s basically empty.”
Both Jay and Nya stopped and started to think. “That’s weird. That must mean that Zane’s software is more complicated than the Guardians’.” Jay concluded, and Nya’s eyes widened.
“There’s something more to Zane’s software that isn’t on this sheet. There’s a reason why Zane is much more complicated…therefore making him more-“
“More human!” Jay stepped in, and Nya nodded. “You’re so smart,” Jay gawked, and Nya giggled. “C’mon, we need to find more information on Zane.”
The three ninja began to dig through drawers and paper after paper, and Sensei Wu, who had no idea what just transpired between the three, just sat back and watched.

The cold winter wind played with Cole’s mess of black hair as he leaned over the banister and gazed at the forest below. The team had dug up a golden robot and disappeared into the tree about 15 minutes ago. Bored, Cole began to pick at the wooden banister; his mind was too unfocused and lost to think about his current situation.
“You okay?” Kai appeared next to Cole suddenly, causing Cole to flinch so violently he almost broke the banister.
“Kai!” Cole gasped for air. “You came out of nowhere like a-“
“A ninja?” Kai raised his eyebrow. “Haven’t heard that one before.”
The boys shared a laugh as they stared out across the Birchwood Forest. Kai cleared his throat. “I hope that they find an answer down there.” He spoke.
“Yeah,” Cole agreed.
“Cuz if they don’t, we are going to have to destroy Zane.” Kai continued.
“Yeah,” Cole agreed with a growl in his throat.
“And you would have to be the one to do it with your magic super strong fists,” Kai went on.
“Yeah,” Cole finally said after hesitation and a disgusted glance at the red ninja.
Kai nodded, completely oblivious of Cole’s disgust. “I can’t even imagine what you would be going through- knowing that if all else fails Zane would have to be destroyed by your own hands-“
“Okay, I get it!” Cole snapped. “I don’t need other people to tell me what I know.”
Kai fell silent. Cole, feeling guilty, took a deep breath. “Look, you are right. It’s a heavy burden knowing that I have the job of murdering Zane. I’ll never be able to look at myself the same way again, but at the same time if we just let him go then a lot of innocent people could get hurt. It’s not something to look forward to but it’s something that must be done.”
Kai nodded. “I know it’s hard, but you can’t look at it as murdering Zane. Zane has already been destroyed and the overlord has taken his place and stolen his face. You aren’t going to kill a friend, just have revenge on the enemy that killed Zane. Twice.”
Cole nodded, agreeing. “I just wish there was a simpler way, instead of turning him into scraps.”
Cocking his head, Kai went into thought. “Didn’t Jay mention something when he was sobbing his eyes out yesterday?”
Cole shook his head. “I don’t know. I wasn’t in the bridge at that point.”
Kai rolled his eyes. “Good for you. It was a nightmare. I seriously can’t believe Nya dates that guy.”
“Kai, focus.”
“Oh, right.” Kai cleared his throat. “He mentioned something like…’if I had listened to him none of this would have happened.’”
Cole stood up straight. “Wait…do what?” Cole spoke in an excited tone.
Kai rotated his hands while he was thinking. “What was the word Jay used? Deaccelerate…retaliate…wait, no! Deactivate!”
Cole gasped, suddenly remembering that moment in the bedroom when he woke up to Zane begging Jay to turn him off. “Kai, that’s it!” Cole shouted. “We can deactivate him! Zane was going to take off his suit so I’m pretty sure it’s somewhere on his chest or back. All we need to do is to work together to keep him still and we can turn him off without destroying him!”
Kai’s face lit up. “We don’t have to destroy Zane in order to stop him? That’s great news!”
Cole opened his mouth to speak, but was interrupted by the third team member left on board. “We have an unidentified incoming,” Misako called from the bridge. The two boys shared a worried look and then dashed up the stairs to the bridge.
“What do you mean, an incoming?” Cole immediately said as he walked through the doors.
“Is it Tree Horns?” Kai asked, looking at the bridge map.
“No,” Misako replied to Kai pointing at the screen. “Tree Horns move in herds, and this object is moving by itself. But in the sky.”
“In the sky?” Cole repeated, looking at the map. “What could it be?”
“If I may,” PIXAL stepped in, appearing on the map screen. “The unidentified object isn’t…alive.”
Kai frowned. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“It’s a piece of technology,” PIXAL continued. “And quite a large piece too.”
Cole and Kai looked at each other. “You don’t think…?” Kai gasped.
Cole narrowed his eyes. “Zane. He found us.” He turned and dashed out of the room, followed by Kai and Misako.
They peered over the deck railing and searched for the flying tech. “There!” Kai pointed to the left. The team followed his arm and were startled to see-
“A dragon?” Cole exclaimed, more fascinated then shocked.
“It’s a robot dragon!” Misako gasped.
“A Techno Dragon!” Kai grinned, naming it. Cole shook his head. “Zane built himself a dragon, but why?”
“And how?” Kai added. “Zane’s never been that talented with engineering even though he is a robot himself.”
Eyeing the new threat, Cole narrowed his eyes. “That’s a problem for another hour. Now, we deal with Zane and his new pet.”
Within fifteen seconds, Cole and Kai devised a plan of attack. Misako took control of the ship and began to turn around as Kai flipped onto the railing and off of the ship.
The elemental dragon of fire roared to life and Kai took off towards the Techno Dragon.
A synthetic roar bellowed from the dragon ahead of him. Kai pulled his mask over his head and gripped the reins tighter. “I’ve got this,” Kai said, but there was a nervous quake in his voice. Kai wasn’t about to enter a fist fight, he was about to enter a dragon fight. Clenching his teeth, Kai yelled a battle cry and his dragon roared as they flew into the first impact.
Kai struck first. Breathing a huge wave of blue fire, the fire dragon aimed for the metal wings and then swooped upwards. Kai, proud of his tactic, glanced down to see the damage but was shocked to see that there was none. The jet black metallic wings seemed unhurt from the fire.
The fire dragon corkscrewed in the air then closed its wings and catapulted towards the metallic dragon. Kai willed his element to take over, and the dragon caught fire, transforming into a fireball missile. Kai narrowed his eyes and prepared for impact.
But to his surprise, the metallic dragon blinked, then vanished.
“What?” Kai exclaimed out loud and then stopped in his path downward. As the fire died down, Kai looked around nervously, but the dragon had vanished.
“That’s unfair!” Kai shouted. “You’re cheat-“
The elemental dragon screamed as a large object slammed into it and grabbed on. Kai, having a connection to the dragon, yelled in pain as well. Slowly, the Techno Dragon became visible again, and Kai felt the blood drain from his face.
The Techno Dragon was about three times the size off his elemental dragon, which he didn’t realize when he was flying at top speeds next to it. The metal was forged from a rare black metal and it had red detailing across its head and body. The eyes were blood red and purple, and the claws were shiny black and speared. The rider laughed, and Kai suddenly saw Zane in a new light.
On top of his titanium body sat a giant chest plate of black metal that matched his dragon. A blue techno screen crossed his eyes and a small headset piece extended from his right ear. A huge uncharacteristic grin was spread across his face and his red eyes glowed with despicable happiness. “Gotcha, Kai.” Zane snarled as his dragon clenched tighter, causing both the dragon and Kai to scream in pain again.
Kai panted hard, trying to ignore the pain. “Not..this…time….Zane!” Kai gasped each word like it was his last.
“And why is that Kai?” Zane asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Because…I….have….something…you…don’t!” Kai spat, his vision starting to brighten in pain.
Zane frowned. “What’s that?”
“Allies!” Cole answered as he landed on the dragon behind Zane.
Shocked, Zane spun around. “How-“ Zane started, but was too slow to react. Cole grabbed the robot and chucked him off the dragon.
The dragon released the fire dragon and dropped to catch Zane, but the Bounty (which had snuck up behind the Techno Dragon) shot a missile towards the falling dragon. It hit the wing and the dragon roared as it was damaged. Everything catapulted to the snow below.
Cole was lucky enough to form his dragon as it all fell, but Kai was too much in exhausted pain to recover his dragon. He hit the snow with a thud.
Zane landed a few feet away, shaken but not hurt. The techno dragon landed last in a giant poof of smoke, fire, and snow. The nindroid stood and shook his head before looking over to see the smoking dragon. Zane tightened his fist in anger and through his new mask he activated the self-repair of the dragon on the wing. Steaming with rage, he turned to see Kai trying to stand in the snow a few feet away. Zane activated his ray gun and approached the fallen ninja.
Kai looked up, holding his side in pain. Seeing the threat, he tried to scramble to his feet, but couldn’t. Zane stepped on his chest and aimed for the shot, lining it up perfectly with Kai’s head. Defeated, Kai braced for the end.
In a sudden flash of black and orange, Zane vanished from Kai’s chest. Kai almost screamed in relief, and then fell back in the snow and passed out.
Cole and Zane tumbled in the snow for a few yards from the sudden collision. When they stopped tumbling, Cole tensed his legs and kicked Zane a few feet away before standing.
Zane stood as well and the two ex- friends glared at each other.
“How dare you come back,” Cole growled, his fists glowing.
Zane smiled. “How else am I supposed to enact my revenge if I can’t see you all again? Speaking of which, Cole- you look terrible. You should get some good sleep. Like forever.”
Cole narrowed his eyes. “Sorry Zane, but you can’t doctor me anymore. You lost that privilege when you turned evil.”
The nindroid laughed. “Looks like we have to settle this right now!” he demanded, shifting his body into a fighting stance.
Cole lifted his fists, ready to attack. “Let’s get this over with,” Cole murmured as he swallowed down the fear and dread that was forming in his throat.
The two ninja lunged at each other, each knowing that only one of them was going to leave alive.
