I finally got my hands on Terry Pratchett's Colour of Magic, as my intro to the Discworld, and I've read and heard that it's not his best work, not so good, why start there, etc... But honestly? I already love this. Written in a very similar tone and with similar characters as my youths' favourite books from my favourite authors, and I'm all sold. Maybe it's not his best? Fine I believe it, since I have no way to agree or disagree yet, but as for the first 50 pages, it's instant love

Discworld Project - 1
Colour of Magic
This book is a parody of sword and sourcery up to and including its style of writing, being set as a compilation of novellas rather than a contiguous story.
While never really laugh out loud funny, the jokes and humor have a way of consistently being entertaining. The overall structure of the book is unappetizing, but as a seed that would grow into the tree that is Discworld as a whole, there's a lot worse you could do.
A fairly good book featuring a pretty novel premise that, while not perfect, definitely is still worthy of being a Discworld novel.
I give it a solid C.

This is the start of a project I'm doing to read all of Discworld once more and do an art piece for every single novel, stylized as a book cover!
If you like this, why don't you read my Webcomic here! or Here as a Playlist on Newgrounds?

The mini-series adaptation of the first novel in the late Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld book series is available to watch for free on Tubi for those of us in the US. The Colour of Magic. It's set in Sir Terry Pratchett's fantasy world known as The Discworld and this particular story mostly deals with the misadventures of the incompetent wizard, Rincewind. It features David Jason (The original voice of Danger Mouse and Duckula) as the incompetent wizard, Rincewind. It also features Sean Astin, Christopher Lee, and Tim Curry. It may not be the best Discworld story but it is the first.

More Discworld Rambling
I finished Mort last week and I was gonna jump into the next chronological book and realized it was another Wizard book (Sourcery). So instead today I jumped back to Colour of Magic which I had only gotten halfway through before jumping ahead to Equal Rites.
It’s better so far, maybe because audiobook instead of paperback? (Although I’m disappointed there was no audio indication that names like Li!ort’s have an exclamation point- which I only discovered by going to find the below quotes)
Anyhow I’m not sure I’m gonna make it through 3 wizard books in a row now but so far it’s been worth it if only for things like the brief glimpse into roundworld plane dragon descriptions. And these quotes too..

Rincewind is growing on me but I will not be surprised if I skip back up to the witches after this one.
Also anyone else kind of hate Spotify’s audiobook controls? I’m so used to the ones on Libby, but these are available without waiting on Spotify so I’ve been using my monthly premium hours, but ugh - twice now it has put an audiobook on random. Why?! No one would ever do that.
Would they?

Friendly reminder that Colour of Magic is great, it's merely always in competition with the masterpieces Pratchett churned out afterwards.

They are a lot of fun, and entertaining parodies of 80's sword and sorcery genre fic. But in 2024, a lot of younger readers won't appreciate all the references, and they aren't as well fleshed-out as even the later "standalone" books. Basically, they are perfectly enjoyable and good parodies if you know the source material. But they don't speak as well to a more universal audience, and they lack the complexity and depth of social and historical commeentary in PTerry's later works.
So, the recommendation of specific later books is more to get a better "hit rate" of getting a new reader hooked on Discworld. It's not intended as a slight on TCoM or TLF as works in their own right.
Can anyone explain to me why people advice against starting your discworld readings with the first two books?
I thought they were horrible or boring, instead I was pleasantly surprised, and thoroughly enjoyed myself honestly
Colour of magic and light fantastic are great ya all I don't what you guys are smoking
