Colour of Magic

This book is a parody of sword and sourcery up to and including its style of writing, being set as a compilation of novellas rather than a contiguous story.

While never really laugh out loud funny, the jokes and humor have a way of consistently being entertaining. The overall structure of the book is unappetizing, but as a seed that would grow into the tree that is Discworld as a whole, there's a lot worse you could do.

A fairly good book featuring a pretty novel premise that, while not perfect, definitely is still worthy of being a Discworld novel.

I give it a solid C.

People get exactly the wrong idea about belief. They think it works back to front. They think the sequence is, first object, then belief. In fact, it works the other way.

Belief sloshes around in the firmament like lumps of clay spiraling in a potter's wheel. That's how gods get created, for example. They clearly must be created by their own believers, because a brief resume of the lives of most gods suggests that their origins certainly couldn't be divine. They tend to do exactly the things people would do if only they could, especially when it comes to nymphs, golden showers, and the smiting of your enemies.

So, I'm really enjoying Mort, it's probably tied with Ligh Fantastic as my favorite so far. I'm obsessed with the plot, obsessed with Death (I mean I already was but his character growth here really shines oh my god), trust me I am enjoying myself tremendously.

I. Don't know how to feel about Mort himself though. He's by no means a bad character. I don't mind following him along through the story, I find his character arc of kind of losing some of his humanity (in a way) while Death learns more of what humanity's all about has me going "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA," and I don't find him boring exactly. I just....don't consider him a lot. With Light Fantastic I was so so deeply enamored with Rincewind and Twoflower and was giddy to see what would happen with them next. Here I'm still very enthusiastic about the story, but I more so want to see what happens next with the plot, not Mort.

It's not that he's a bad character or poorly written or entirely uninteresting, I just think in a line up with such intriguing and distinctive characters (literally Death who is learning what it means to be alive, Death's adopted daughter who's been stuck as a 16 year old for 30+ year (I'm not over that), a queen who is supposed to be dead but isn't and as a result people have a hard time just processing she exists, etc.) he feels kinda flat. He's just a guy and aside from getting into messes hat pushes the plot along the most internal struggle he has is unrequited feelings for the queen. I like him well enough, I just wish there was more to him and the element of him being Death's apprentice changing him was explore just that bit more.

Still really love the book though. I did NOT expect to like Ysabell all that much (or at all really) but she's really grown on me and I'm obsessed with her now. I haven't finished it yet but yeah, just has thoughts.
