Various Artists - Women Against the Oppressive Regime organised by DIACI Community (DIY Podcast about Women in Georgian Music Industry)
After rigged elections, the illegitimate government of Georgia has resorted to unconstitutional actions, sparking a massive wave of civil resistance. In response, this regime is using every tool at its disposal to punish citizens. They're silencing dissent, have taken over the media—including the public broadcaster, now a mouthpiece for propaganda—and are firing people from their jobs for having the “wrong” political opinions. Since November 28, over 400 people, including journalists, have been detained. Many have been physically assaulted, with reports of torture and mistreatment not only during arrests but also in transport vehicles and police stations. Women have been threatened with rape and murder. Most detainees have needed hospitalization due to their injuries. Not a single person responsible for these abuses has been held accountable. Instead, the system protects and encourages these violent tactics. (...) Funds raised will go directly toward supporting the protest movement.

There's nothing better than putting some music you've neglected back into your ears and having it hit you the same way it hit you when you were 15 years old. 100 Flowers released 'Reject Yourself' on the compilation 'Hell Comes To Your House' in 1981. I didn't come across this compilation until 1989. If my memory serves me here, I brought the comp because I recognized Social Distortion who I knew from the documentary 'Another State of Mind' (one of those impossible to find movies that was passed around between young punk on VHS tapes usually accompanied by other hard to get films like 'Repo Man' or 'Eraserhead' or Penelope Spheeris' 'Suburbia' or her 'The Decline of Western Civilization' Part 1). When you're young and you're just starting to explore music for yourself, you tend to gravitate towards the music you're exposed to either through parents or older siblings (your own, which I did not have, or a friends), your peers, or, if you're anything like me, album cover art (which was how I got into Iron Maiden, Merciful Fate, Motorhead, and countless thrash metal bands in the late 80s) or random impulse purchases (does it sound weird? Do you not speak the language? Are you curious and the music is cheap?) While Social Distortion was the entry point, the song that stuck with me was 'Reject Yourself' (which I put on a mix I made in 2012 and posted here in 2017). I think it holds up well and I also think that it a contemporary punk audience would still dig it, hence this post. Given the age I came across 100 Flowers, I had no idea who they were or that they were formally the punk band The Urinals having changed their name to signal a move away from a strict punk sound for more post-punk, industrial, experimental music (my truncated summary of their discogs entry) Funny enough, I never really listened to The Urinals until recently. Not sure why.

kineorama - it all makes sense, cats live 100 years (2020)
personal rating: ☆9.0/10 ☆
i actually really really loved this compilation album. it’s got a really calm and almost soothing atmosphere to it, with the vocals sounding like you’re being sung a lullaby. however, the album also carries a kind of strange feeling with it, like something is just a little bit wrong. this feeling really adds to the whole album. in songs like ‘aitsu no nogai’, the lyrics are really melancholic, and it feels when you’re waiting for the subway on a winter afternoon and you can see your breath. the whole album has lots of digital instrumentals, which contrasts really nicely with the soft feeling of the piano used in the songs, and with the melodic vocals. it all kind of feels like an empty building with the art still on the walls. it’s cute, it’s a little bit ominous, it’s charming, and most of all it’s just really really nice to listen to. it’s great! some of my favorite songs on this album are ‘pop song’ (probably my favorite song on the album), ‘correct way to fall down a deep hole’, and ‘anime song #5’, but honestly this album has no bad songs on it, and all of them are full of charm. they feel like ceramics and warm lighting. i love this album so much :-]
would i recommend it?: DEFINITELY!!!!!

The History of The Left Banke (compilation by Rhino Records)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Originally released in 1985
More below vvv
So this was a compilation from the 80s and if you’re on a budget, love this band, this is honestly the place to go for their work on vinyl. The median price on Discogs is 15 dollars, you can get it for cheaper pretty easily, it’s a high quality release, and like first printings of their albums are pretty expensive. It’s a very nice record, especially since it comes with a pamphlet (unless you buy it from someone who lost the pamphlet) definitely worth the money, not all the good records are expensive at least yet, here’s a example of that!
