Many humans are so stupid, that they are promoting or even buying electricity-powered cars. You can imagined how "far" such car can go if the climatization is running. Little did I know there was a Famicom version of Ys in Japan that did not make the trip westside. While it is largely a port there are enough differences and additions that it almost feels like a remake.

Even though Ys is not a long title there are a number of changes here. One of the most significant is the leveling curve. Rather than 10 levels the cap is now 24. This had the potential to make the game a ridiculous grind however experience comes so easily you can hit level 18 or 19 in the first major dungeon. It feels no different than the other versions in practice. A few mini-quests and puzzles have been added to liven up a few underused areas. Some of the bosses have new attack patterns and are more difficult. The layouts of the dungeons have been changed and most importantly there is a “new” final boss. These changes do not impact the general flow of the game as it is still the same teaser of a title it always was. But they do make the NES game distinct.

Despite the myriad changes and additions to the game, it is still short. I only had to grind three times, and each was for about ten minutes. A few of the boss battles tripped me up a few times due to their new patterns and the sluggish controls. But even then, I was able to complete this version of the game faster than all others in under three hours. Ys 1 has always been a brief experience which is why it is usually paired with its sequel. But that would not start until the PC Engine CD came.

Ys was never a stunning-looking title. But of all the console versions the Famicom version is the ugliest. The sprites are short, squat, lack detail and worst of all recycle constantly. The Famicom’s limited color palette means the overall palette is bright and garish at times. The biggest letdown is the music. The Ys series is legendary for its phenomenal music. Outside of a few tracks, the soundtrack here fails to meet the standards of the other versions. There are a few new music tracks but overall, you are not playing this one for its production values.

Up until a few years ago I actually owned a laptop that ran Windows 3.11. It had been the work computer for my dad in the early 90′s and it didn’t even have a color screen. I took over it when Windows 95 had been out for a while. But it could run Tetris and a few other games that were on it, so I kept putting off getting rid of it. I had some plans of trying to use it for some LARP or retro-futuristic art installation, but I never got around to it.

That laptop finally took a trip to the recycling center in a move to a smaller apartment a few years ago, because I really had/have too much random shut I don’t want to get rid of anyways.

Windows 3.11 isn’t even the oldest operating system I’ve run on a machine I owned, in my teens II bought a second hand PC with an Intel i386DX processor. It was running some version of DOS. CGA graphics displayed four colors. No, that doesn’t work out like four color printing where those colors combine to form the whole rainbow. No, it showed black, white, cyan, and magenta, with pixels big enough that the colors didn’t bleed together.

Oh, and speaking of my hoarding tendencies when it comes to objects I have nostalgia for: I can see the original box holding my old Commodore 64 from my seat. That was the first computer I owned! I bought it for 50% my own saved up money and 50% sponsorship from my parents for buying a computer you could program on. (Because my mom figured it could be “educational” to try programming.) I obviously mainly planned to play games, so I would have probably bought a NES otherwise. My brother bought an Amiga 500 with the same deal a few years later. We have now both studied computer science, and we work IT jobs, so I guess I’ll have to admit that my mom was right.

The Roots

Ever since I first played Renegade and Double Dragon on the NES I knew i was a fan of the beat em up video game genre. Multiple beat em ups would follow after that from one generation of console to another. Some of my most memorable gaming experiences has been from beat em ups. I remember playing Final Fight in the arcades in the late 80's and dumping all my quarters in one visit to the arcade, just so I can see what happens next.

The Mechanics

Some may argue that most of these games are "repetitive". I agree. They are quite repetitive. Most beat em ups typically only have about 2 or 3 buttons beyond the control stick. There's an attack button, a jump button, and maybe, depending on the game, a "special" button. The special button is often based on the beat em up your playing. Some beat em ups use the button as a long rage projectile attack. Some use it as a "screen clearer".  A screen clear usually kills everyone bad guy on the screen to keep your character from being whelmed. Most of the time, these screen clearers are often finite and in limited supply.

Dungeon Fighter takes the beat em up genre and adds slight fighting game mechanics with rpg elements. You can do special moves with special inputs and you can level up your character and equip gear and items onto them to improve their stats. Most beat em ups do not have this formula. You are limited to basic attack and a jump. Sometimes you can combine your button presses to have different attacks but not at the level of directional inputs much like in a fighting game.

The Look

Dungeon Fighter Online (DFO) has a pixel art style reminiscent of the arcade era of beat em ups mixed with an anime art aesthetic. The concept art is amazing and the effects of pixel art style is a personal favorite of mine. The animations of the characters are very "anime" and stylistic but that's just the art direction DFO wants to take.

The Story/Plot

There's a story and it's confusing. Every character class you select has their own generic story background which isn't really represented in the main story of the game. To be honest after my first play-through I stopped paying attention to the story and just focused mainly on the action.

The Sound

There's barely any music. When I play I usually have music playing in the background. The death cries of the NPCs are all recycled throughout the game. It feels like sound wasn't the focus of the game but if they did I'm not seeing it.

The Feel

Feels awesome. Mixing a beat em up with fighting game mechanics adds extra depth to the genre. Adding weapons, armor, accessories, and even avatar pieces also creates a more unique experience for the gamer. DFO really shines on the gameplay. It's called dungeon fighter because you have to clear rooms (dungeons) until you get to the boss. The bosses are typical pushovers much like most of the game's library of villains. But I did notice once you get to level 80+ the difficulty curve does increase drastically. You are easier to kill and the baddies take more hits to defeat.

The combat feels great. There is somewhat of an impact on most hits but it's how they are delivered and visually portrayed is what makes them feel powerful. Once again this game is very anime inspired so if you don't like that that art style then you probably won't like this game. There are also multiple character classes you can select that play completely different from one another. Playing the game as a Slayer will have a totally different feel as if you were playing with the Gunner. I suggest you try them all to find your favorite way to fight.

The Why

Play it if you love beat em ups. The price is right and you don't need an expensive computer to play it. The game has a stamina/energy meter that depletes once you enter a new room in a dungeon. This meter refreshes every 24 hours. You can also acquire in game items to give you more stamina for more play time. To be honest, each character has enough stamina up to where once it you run out you are pretty satisfied with how much you've covered. If you still don't feel content feel free to create another character because she character has their own stamina meter. DFO also has a PVP mode if you're into that kind of thing. (I never really play it).

Last Thoughts

If you like beat em ups, anime style, and FREE, play this game. You can even play it with your friends. Up to 4 players can dungeon fight. If you want to invest in the game and support it you can buy "CERA" which is the in game current that can only purchased with real life dollars. Most of the purchasable items are cosmetic avatar pieces that help your character stand out and look unique. But without cosmetic avatars there is no way to make your character look distinguished. If you're a fan of beat em ups check it out. If you're not, I'd say pass on this one, but if you are looking to get into a FREE action RPG with an anime look, DFO is a great place to start.

These are my notes for the second episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’m so sorry these are so long this time. I had a lot of questions and long comments. Also, if you haven’t checked out the first one of these, go do that. I explain some basic things that would seem weird otherwise.

Season 1, Episode 2: “The Harvest”

Title still hasn’t changed to the iconic look we know

Quick question: everyone headbands to the theme song as much as I do, right? Cause like, this time, I feared I’d hit my head against the wall when I did it, so I just need to validate my actions

I feel that instead of having that depressed gothic teen, they just have Giles instead

Buffy, was that suppose to make them feel better, cause it didn’t really seem like it

Also, Buffy stole the words out of my brain, Willow you are sitting

Thanks Giles, that made complete sense

So I talked to my dad about Darla and he said that it seemed like they wanted Darla to be a teenager but then made her an adult instead unless that came from group chat I can’t remember

I totally thought the Master was going to say House of Mouse

Okay, but cutting back and forth for info dumps are really effective, especially for me, an adhd person who can lose focus fairly quickly

That right, Xander, don’t be stereotypical. Don’t assume vampires turn to bats. Dracula’s the exception, not the norm

Look at everyone contributing a little to finding the vampires location. See, Xander’s not all dumb, just somewhat

If Scooby-Doo taught me anything, it’s that being bait is just as bad as being food

Also, what’s this advanced technology in the 1990s

Also, thanks Joss for saying mentally challenged. There are so many worse words you could’ve put in but you didn’t👏👏👏👏

Now there’s the reality of public schools

But seriously, who’s he kidding? I bet kids leave campus all the time, they did at my high school

Also, why is the gate open if it’s a closed campus? Why was it left open? Is it so close to the beginning of the day that the custodians hadn’t quite gotten around to closing it yet, and if it’s not, then that raises so many more questions

I thinks it’s cool how Xander’s character develops over time. Like, I can see him struggling with the idea that a man is supposed to be doing the hard work and saving, but later, he’s very content with staying on the sideline for the most part and letting Buffy do all the work

They already set up the tension between the two, don’t they?

Again, Buffy, do you really think no one is going to notice the door?

I think Angel had friends once but once he got turned, he lost them through fear and time

Wait, did Xander hear the conversation between Buffy and Angel, including his good luck?

Also, how was Xander able to leave but not Buffy? I smell sexism in this thing....and also the fact that Xander has been to the school for a year or two at this point

Also, what was the interaction between Angel and Xander like if Xander followed her?

Xander, don’t you dare disrespect chem class! Chem is the best science out of all of them, excluding computer science. Chem and computer are tied for the sciences

Weren’t you just asking your friend to find out what Willow was doing, also she wasn’t talking at all???

Why is other me the complete opposite of actual me. She can’t code, doesn’t know what keys mean versus I can code kind of complicated things, knows how to do basic things like save, etc.

Also, my soul hurt so much watching her hit that delete key smh😔

Tbh that whole tunnel segment was pretty underwhelming. You’d think there would be a big fight but no, just some vent crawling

I know that Colin wasn’t gonna go by unscathed but damn, finger to the eye and no response to it. That a strong vampire. Also, thanks for sparing us the image of a finger to the eye. I can handle some gore but it still unsettles me, and many other people are more sensitive than I, so yeah

Only Giles would think murder is great

Why does Willow sound kind of off here? Like, it’s not her voice or they had to redub her lines cause it didn’t pick up right when they recorded I don’t know it’s just seems weird to me

Bed of Roses - Chapter 1

Summary: Y/N finds some strange abnormalities with some medical records, and when she continues to look into it after her boss tells her not to, things take a turn for the worse. Characters: Nurse!Reader, Gordon Walker, Sabrina (OFC) Word Count: 1412 Warnings: Medical situations and discussions, angst, violence A/N: Welcome to a new journey! This chapter is short, but it’s a lead up to the journey the reader is going to be taken on. I am in the medical field (I do the reader’s job, just on the side of the insurance company), so there is some calloused mentions of medical situations that I have seen before. “Never ceases to amaze me what people shove up their butts,” one of the nurses from the ER muttered as she walked into the health management and insurance review office, carelessly tossing a patient file onto the only occupied desk.

Glancing up, Y/N stopped typing, removed her hands from under the file, and placed it into the overflowing box labeled ‘New’ sitting a mere foot away from where the nurse had dropped it. “People do a lot of things, Sabrina. Good thing the human body is so resilient.”

Sabrina chuckled and snapped her gum, giving Y/N a lazy shrug. “Tell that to Mr. Isaacs,” she gestured to the folder, “who decided to shove a beer bottle up his ass and then take a shower. He fell, bottle shattered… you know the rest. Dude bled out from a perforated colon and died forty five minutes ago.”

Being a nurse herself, Y/N understood the callous nature of some people in the medical field, but it still didn’t make it easy to hear a co-worker speak without any compassion whatsoever. “That’s a tough break,” she grimaced at the unintentional pun that made Sabrina snort, “but I’ll take care of the insurance clinicals and submit it for processing.”

Sabrina blinked at her. “Yeah, I know. That’s like… your job. Duh.” With another snap of her gum, the ER nurse spun on her heel and left the room, finally leaving Y/N alone once more.

It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy being around people, she just enjoyed being alone more. Tasked with gathering clinical documents to submit to insurance companies for approval, her department only had two people in it. One was her, and the other was the department lead and her boss, Gordon Walker. What the man lacked in personality he made up for by allowing Y/N to do her work in peace. She was good, fast, and dependable.

She never let anything slip.

Which is why the patient file she was currently processing drew her attention. There was so much missing information, it was as if the file was documented carelessly or was done by someone who didn’t understand what fields need to be filled out.

The only information on the file was a name, Dean Winchester, and year of birth, 1979. There was no admit date, no diagnosis, and no insurance information. Usually, if a patient is uninsured, there’s a code that’s used to flag the file so it doesn’t land on Y/N’s desk; no insurance means there’s nothing for her to submit. But in this case, the field was left completely blank.

Thinking it was just a clerical error, she opened up the medical record search box on her computer and typed this mystery man’s information in. Her eyebrows shot up when the program notified her that there were fourteen matches based on his name and year of birth.

“What the hell?” she mumbled to herself as she scrolled through each record, realizing that each patient file is just as incomplete as the one on her desk. None of the files ever crossed her desk, so it wasn’t anything she overlooked, but it was still a huge error on the part of the hospital and needed to be corrected.

Highlighting all the files, she printed each admit form out and tucked them neatly into a folder. Gordon would need to be made aware of what Y/N discovered so they could figure out how this Dean Winchester fella had been receiving free medical care over the last decade without anyone noticing. She set his file and the folder filled with admit forms to the side and continued processing the stack of patient files that seemed to be a permanent fixture on her desk, regardless of how fast she worked.

When Gordon strolled into the office thirty minutes later, Y/N caught his attention and gathered the files before walking over to his desk right as he sat down.

“Hey, Gordon. This file came across my desk and it’s incomplete,” she passed him the patient file, “but when I tried to look up this patient’s name in the medical records database, there’s fourteen more incomplete admit forms that come up. I don’t know how nobody caught this, but I wanted to bring it to your attention.”

Gordon flipped open the patient file and his body tensed as his eyes studied the name printed on the page. Immediately, he shut the file and tossed it - along with the folder of admit forms - into the confidential information bin to be incinerated.

“Forget you ever saw those, Y/N,” Gordon warned, pointing a finger at her. “The file landed on your desk by mistake and the Winchesters are nothing you need to worry about.”

“But -”

“That’s an order,” he interrupted. “Now get back to work.”

Y/N opened her mouth to argue more, but decided against it, dejectedly making her way back over to her desk and sitting down. The more she thought about it, the more things didn’t add up. That, and the fact that Gordon said Winchesters, plural. Something else was going on, and Y/N was nothing if not diligent. If there was anything untoward going on, she’d get to the bottom of it and bring it to the attention of the administration staff if she found anything.

Once Gordon was distracted with his own work, she continued processing the patient files on her desk, but also began searching through medical records for patients with blank files that have the last name of Winchester. There were several complete files, but she found multiple files under the names John and Sam Winchester with the same incomplete status as Dean.

After a quick break for lunch, Y/N continued working and continued digging deeper and deeper into the fragmented medical history of these mysterious Winchesters. There were some consistencies in their sparse documentation, though. Almost all of their patient files had originated in the ER’s trauma unit, meaning there was some kind of life threatening injury that brought them in. Based on the amount of times each man was here, they were some of the clumsiest people in the world.

Or they lived very dangerous lives.

The afternoon passed in a blur, and Y/N waved goodbye to an oddly skittish Gordon as he grabbed his coat and left the room, leaving an hour early for the second week in a row. She never complained, though. This job allowed her the freedom to work alone without being spit on, peed on, pooped on, or otherwise abused by patients. She was still helping, but behind the scenes.

The next time she glanced at the clock, it was just past five-thirty, a half an hour after her shift was supposed to end. There was nobody waiting at home for her, so she wasn’t concerned. She locked up patient files, turned off her computer, and stored the list of medical record numbers she gathered from all of the Winchester’s incomplete cases in one of the bottom drawers of her desk.

It was tomorrow’s problem, now.

Gathering her purse and coat, she shut the light off and locked the door to the office before leaving the hospital and making the long trek across the property to the employee parking lot. It was a rather large hospital campus, but the cool fall air was nice compared to the stuffy recycled hospital air in her office.

The parking garage was quiet, and she paused when she noticed some of the lights near her car were burned out. The outages looked random, and there was still plenty of light, so she only gave a cautionary glance around before continuing to her car.

The second her key slipped into the lock on the driver’s side door, something heavy hit her over the head and her body was slammed against the side of her car. Panic set in and she began fighting, ignoring the immense pain burning in the back of her skull. Something sharp piercing her neck made her try to scream, but the second she parted her lips, a wool glove was pressed against her mouth, silencing her.

Her body felt heavy and her vision was blurry, and she stumbled once the arms wrapped around her body released her. Spinning around, she squinted at the blurry outline of someone dressed in black and the last thing she heard before everything went dark was a man’s voice.

“Got her.”
