To Be Hero X isn’t as interested so far in exploring heroism as a concept as it is in making it a commentary on capitalism and the entertainment industry specifically.

Lin Ling claims he wants to be a hero, but he hasn’t exactly saved anyone so far—he’s been starring in photoshoots and TV shows, writing advertisements, getting exploited by his bosses. The entire fight with Wreck being filmed and outright scripted is a huge indicator to me on what the show wants to talk about.

In any other show, Nice would be considered a Fake Hero. He’s more concerned with looking good and making money than the actual heroics side of his job. And this makes sense with Lin Ling’s livelihood depending on it, but then: why is the show called To Be Hero?

I think in this show, “I want to be a hero” is synonymous with “I want to be rich”.

“Anyone can be a hero” = “anyone can become rich”, the capitalist dream. But there’s a price. If Lin Ling wants to keep the power, prestige, and wealth that comes with being Nice (and right now at least, it seems he does), then he has to play the part perfectly. He fears losing trust value = he fears losing his fame. Nice needs to be perfect = he needs to do what he’s told.

I do think the show might delve deeper into the theme of actual heroism later, and this may come into direct conflict with the fake heroism characters like Lin Ling have to abide by. Though it’s possible being a true hero is also synonymous with being free from the industry.

I've been brainrotting SO bad about a specific rarepair it's actually unreal. I've never lost my mind this badly over a ship that exists nowhere else but in my mind but NOW?

Sometimes people will write Vio's relationship with dark magic like it's an addiction, but I kind of like the thought of it being the opposite.

Like, he's wrought from Light. Hero of Light, split from a sword just as blessed with that stuff. Frankly, I think it would make sense for him to be struggling with an instinctive repulsion every time he tries to handle dark magic... but of course, he keeps doing it, because how else is he supposed to get Shadow back?

As time goes on I'm increasingly quite curious about the new Red Hood series. Sure, I still wish we were getting both BoP and Red Hood versions of Helena (I still don't see why we can't have both and I just like having more Helena in general) but that 100% doesn't mean I'm not intrigued about what we're getting. Not to mention the New Orleans noir-vibe is most likely a better fit for Helena anyway.

I think that her and Jason getting out of Gotham could be a good thing for them as characters because the Bat-side of DC is super overcrowded at the moment. Plus even if they do hook up (which I'm still hoping they don't do btw) from what I've heard Gretchen Felker-Martin is absolutely not the kind of writer to make a female character just a love interest. Also she is seemingly very comfortable with writing messy dynamics which is what anything involving Jason and Helena will inevitably be.

Also like I'm so relieved that they gave a well-regarded genre fic writer this book instead of one of the same 6 white guys they love giving every book to. That is a win no matter what happens with it.

I still want to wait and see before I make any statements about it being good or bad as a book but wow I'm curious.

I like how Guppys sash looks like a nipped fish tail. I would imagine older Seakids doing that when their light is low but can't find any light source other than themselves or for establishing dominence like some fish in real life.
