Things are bad right now.
As many of you know, way back in 2020 we weren’t sure if our business was gonna make it. Our factory was already on break for Lunar New Year–a month-long holiday for many businesses in the area–and with the announcement of COVID19, everything shut down indefinitely. We knew immediately we were in for a bad time. Despite our fears, our sales grew so far beyond anything we ever expected, to the point where we had to hire two employees just to keep up with demand! 
Unfortunately, even after our factory reopened, our problems were not over. Their quality drastically declined almost immediately, to the point that a significant amount of our  fabric would literally fall apart in transit between the factory and our office. Because of this, we discovered that our sales rep had no idea what she was doing and knew nothing about the factory she was representing, so when we told her the fabric was garbage her response was “👍 factory said it’s good!” At the beginning, only roughly 10% of our new product was defective and we were able to sell the affected items with a reasonable discount. By the end of our relationship with that factory, 40% of our midi skirts and 70% of our miniskirts were defective, some affected so severely that they practically fell apart when touched. And still, our rep said everything was fine and there were no problems and the fabric composition had not changed.
So in 2022 we changed factories. We hired Ash to handle this since I was way too busy managing fulfillment to do the amount of research and communication necessary to find us a factory that met our criteria. Finding clothing factories that can make clothing over a size 2-3X is significantly more difficult than one that can’t because it often requires larger and more expensive machinery. But Ash did it: she got us set up with a new factory that has excellent certifications for both their labor practices and their methods for textile production, that delivers consistent, high quality sewing on well made fabric that can be printed without suffering loss in detail–and she was armored with the knowledge for what makes a quality garment so she could check them if they tried to screw us on quality. Their minimum orders were way higher than our previous factory’s, so we decided to focus on ordering more units of fewer designs. We ordered way too much our first round–some of those designs were in stock until the 2024 blowout sale! But it worked out, and slowly we had a warehouse full of stuff to sell.
Fast forward to 2024, business is slowing down between the economy being bad and what seemed to be a general skirt fatigue amongst our customers. We tried expanding into shirts, which would’ve been successful if our minimums were lower. In the late spring we realized we were in trouble if we didn’t make drastic changes and we ultimately decided to end in-house fulfillment and transfer to a third party fulfillment center that would support domestic shipping in Canada and eventually the UK, EU, and Australia. In order to make that transition affordable we drastically discounted everything and that sale was super successful! We were able to begin shipping from the fulfillment center with an almost clean slate, even if it did mean having to close the store for almost two months and thereby missing out on two very important months of sales.
Unfortunately, we were stupid. We continued to order new designs on an every other month schedule instead of switching to an every month schedule, forgetting that having a backstock in a variety of designs is what previously helped us float between orders and now we quite literally didn’t have enough inventory to match the sales we made for last year’s holiday sale.
That brings us to now.
We’re a little stuck. We have a round of skirts in production (yay!) but they won’t get here until February (boo!). To get back on that monthly cycle we would need to order the next round of skirts right now, but we can’t pay for production until that next round of skirts gets here; if the current sale goes well, it’s paying payroll, not production. We are currently in the very difficult, horrible situation of not having enough money for next month’s payroll unless we are somehow able to make significant sales with our very sparse inventory.
We’re scrappy and we do our best to adapt to disasters and I’m sure we’ll find a way to adapt to this one as well, it’ll just take us some time to get there. Basically we’re going to be okay eventually–hopefully later this year–but in the meantime if we seem frantic, now you know why.

Dismissed “Check out these blogs” recommendations are now dismissed forever.
New custom domains were not receiving renewed SSL certificates, and thus not properly accessible. This has now been fixed, and new SSL certificates have been granted to the affected domains.
Archives and custom pages on blogs with custom domains were broken. This has now been fixed.
On web, some dialogs did not disable our keyboard shortcuts while they were open. For example, you could like a post with the ‘l’ key even though a dialog was open on top of the post! This is now fixed.
On web, we were displaying an option to block a community in Activity, which is not actually possible, and has now been removed. Instead of blocking a community, you can simply leave a community.
The community tags section has been updated to make it clearer that they will aid in discovery of your community.
We’ve made a few small design improvements throughout communities. Less wasted space FTW!

And there you behold the new heiress of the Matthews’ Kitchen, your boss, is your old situationship from culinary school…Charlotte Matthews.
Your eyes froze, as your fingers hovered over the box of old knives. It’s been at least two years since you walked out of the Culinary Institute with a expensive-ass certificate, this box of knives, and no clear plan other than: don’t go back to Staten Island.
You didn’t.
You followed Travis to San Diego instead.
His dad’s restaurant was on life support back then—decent bones, dead menu, loyal but bored locals. The kind of place that reeked of wasted potential and decades of fried fish grease.
You were supposed to help relaunch it. Three months, maybe four.
That was twenty-four months ago.
Now it’s one of those word-of-mouth spots that gets listed in travel blogs under “If You Know, You Know”.
The line wraps around the block on weekends. The cocktail napkins are stamped with a custom logo you designed on a napkin during a hangover. There’s a photo of you and Travis in the back hallway, mid-laugh, post-shift, covered in beet juice and glory.
You never meant to stay.
It was just an in between place before your big break. But what you and Travis built with his dad. You just can’t imagine leaving. Your heart felt heavy, pulling the box onto your lap.
New York City was always the plan. Build a restaurant that had your DNA and fingerprints from start to finish. It was your dream the second you realized you were kinda good at cooking. It only snowballed into more the deeper you got into the culinary world.
Have a successful restaurant, maybe a michelin star or two, get an apartment a block away from the restaurant, marry a girl, maybe have a kid, and have the restaurant be so successful you can retire after awhile and be a glorified private chef to your wife and kids and hopefully grandkids for the rest of your days.
You frowned, your fingers danced around the dull metal of the old knives. This set was a gift from one of your teachers Chef Scott. You hadn’t used them in over a year. They had lost their edge.
Maybe you can sharpen them back to life.
You set the box on the counter of your kitchen in your apartment. Sighing as you begin to lay everything out. You might as well start now if you’re going to use them anytime soon.
Yet your mind kept drifting onto your lost in translation plans. Shelved dreams, and the version of you in culinary school. The person you were when Chef Scott gave you these knives. That version of you was so determined and unstoppable.
You were one track minded in your pursuit of your dream. You took a step back as all the knives were laid out in front of you. You turn your back on them to grab your whetstone and return to grab the first knife.
You ran the whetstone over the blade with practiced precision. The rhythmic motion was almost meditative, each stroke a quiet conversation that kept coming back to why did you ever stop using this knife set? After a few moments the blade, once dull, handle a little chipped started to gleam, its edge sharpening under your touch.
You paused, wiping the blade clean, faced with the reflection of yourself in its polished surface. A glimpse of yourself. Maybe you needed to be sharpened? Maybe things shouldn’t be set aside to lie if they have life still in them.
The next work day was grueling. The last of the staff filter out through the side exit. You wipe your hands on your apron, twisting your neck until it pops. You’re not sore from work, you’re sore from holding your breath all day. You always are when the food critic rumors start flying.
You step out back. The night air smells like eucalyptus and fried shallots.
Akilah’s already out there, cross-legged on a patio chair, dark skin lit golden under the bulb strung overhead, reading something on her iPad and chewing on her bottom lip.
She was the sweetest person you’d ever met. You met Akilah second year of Culinary school when she visited Travis over one of the weekends. They had been freshly dating long distance after they reconnected at some party over the previous summer.
The second you laid eyes on her you knew you wanted her to be your friend. Came into your dorm holding a box of Vinny’s pizza, with a beaming Travis holding beers in his. After hours of talking and joking she made you promise if you moved to California to let her be your roommate. A drunken request that became a sober promise months into friendship.
Which is exactly what ended up happening, she also was patient enough to drive you to work almost everyday. She worked at the restaurant too but more hand in hand with Mr. Martinez in the bookkeeping. Whenever Travis marries her, you just know they’ll be a power couple in a Forbes cover.
She looks up when you settle next to her. “You got another email,” she says gently.
You sigh. “How bad is it?”
“It’s…good. It’s from a place in Austin. Upscale Filipino fusion. They want you to help consult on their menu. Two-month gig, full creative freedom, five figures. The offer is in bold. Which means they’re serious.”
You groan. Loudly. Lean your head back and stare at the sky like it owes you answers.
“I don’t know, Aki. It’s—It’s a lot. Like… if I go, that means leaving this.” You gesture around. “I helped rebuild this place. It’s feels like abandoning my child.”
Akilah pauses her reading, closes the tablet. “But is it still growing you?”
You blink at her.
“I mean…” she continues, softer now, “maybe this was always supposed to be your stepping stone. You and Travis did something incredible. But that doesn’t mean you’re supposed to stop now.”
You stare at the dark outline of the hills. Your fingers twitch, like they want to dice something. Cook something. Run.
She’s still watching you.
“Can I be real with you for a sec?” she says, voice low.
You nod.
“You’re… safe here. And I get it. I really do. After everything that happened in school, and with Nat—”
You flinch at the name but don’t stop her.
“—and how hard you worked to prove yourself. This place gave you a win. But you’re so much more than just one restaurant.”
You close your eyes. Her words hit too close to where you hide things.
She nudges your shoulder with hers. “You don’t owe anyone your stillness. If you wanna go, go. The people who love you will still be here when you come back.”
You breathe in. The air tastes like salt and citrus and burnt rosemary. The city murmurs around you.
“…What if I fail? And it blows up in my face.” you whisper.
Akilah smiles like she’s heard this before, maybe from herself. “Then you fail. Loud and bold and on your terms. But what if you don’t?”
You don’t answer. You just pull your phone from your pocket. There are three unopened emails sitting in your inbox, one of them marked Matthews Group: NYC Flagship Proposal.
You stare at it.
Then tap it open.
It was two weeks of mauling this over. One week of negotiations and one day sitting with the final offer. You knew you had to do it. It was too good to pass up. The only problem was Travis and his dad.
You stared at Akilah on the couch of your shared apartment. She had a face mask on and was nursing a mint tea. “Is he in a good mood?” You ask her.
Akilah shrugs, eyes focused on her book. “Trav sent me a picture of some herb plants, for his garden. So I think he is. But also whoever knows with him.”
“You should know. You’re his girlfriend.”
“Okay and? Just because we’re dating doesn’t mean I can read minds.” She argues, there’s no bite to it but you hear the sarcasm drip in her tone.
She had been pushing for you to set the meeting for literal weeks and today was the day. You were so nervous you made her text you every second of your walk into the restaurant.
You ask them to meet you in the breakroom. Travis is already suspicious. He raises an eyebrow like you’re about to reveal some deep secret, like you’re finally going to admit you’re the one who broke the immersion blender last summer.
Mr. Martinez just sips his café con leche and says, “Sounds serious.”
It is.
You sit across from them, heart hammering in your chest like it’s trying to beat the words out of you. They look so at ease. Travis is peeling an orange, and Mr. Martinez is tapping a pen against his knee like he always does when he’s relaxed.
“I got a job offer,” you say, your voice flat from holding too much emotion.
Travis’s fingers still. “Another consulting gig?” he asks.
You hesitate. “Sort of. It’s…in New York.”
That’s when Travis drops the orange peel.
“Wait—New York?” he echoes, as if it’s a betrayal. “Like moving-New York? Leave-us-New York?”
You nod. “It’s a flagship launch. Matthews Group. It’s big. It’s…huge, actually. And they want me to help build the menu from the ground up.”
Travis blinks at you like you just turned into someone else. “You’re seriously thinking about leaving? Just like that?”
You open your mouth, close it, then try again. “Trav… I wasn’t even supposed to be here this long. We were gonna be here a few months. We ended up making something incredible. I love it here, I do—but I can’t stay here. You know that, right?”
His jaw tightens. “Yeah, but I didn’t think you’d—you—would actually go. I thought we were building something together. A future. A brand. I thought this was—”
“A chapter,” you say, voice barely above a whisper. “Not forever.”
Mr. Martinez sets his cup down with a soft clink. The whole room stills at the atmosphere shift. Mr. Martinez had that kind of effect in any room. He demanded the attention of everyone even in small ways.
He’s quiet for a moment, then clears his throat. “If you don’t take the job…” he says, eyes sharp and serious, “I’m firing you.”
Both you and Travis whip your heads toward him.
“What the hell, Dad?” Travis says, stunned.
Mr. Martinez raises his hands. “I mean it. If you stay, I’ll have Javi post your termination on the clock app.”
“…You mean TikTok?” you ask, stunned into laughing a little.
“Whatever,” he waves it off. “The point is—you’ve outgrown us, mija. You’ve done everything you could here. You made this place shine. But you’re bigger now. Brighter. And I can’t say I love you like my own daughter if I don’t let you go to grow to the fullest of your potential.”
You blink quickly, throat tight.
“I’ve watched you burn for this. Saw the fire in your belly every night after close. I saw it the day you told me to trash half the menu and trust you. You earned this. So go take it.”He nods once, firm. “Or you’re fired.”
Travis looks like he might cry. Or punch a wall. Maybe both. He rubs his eyes and mumbles, “This fucking sucks.”
You lean forward. “Trav-this doesn’t mean goodbye forever. It’s just-”
“Yeah, yeah,” he waves a hand. “Go make your Michelin star or whatever and forget about the peasants back here.”
You both laugh, watery and a little raw. But then he stands, and pulls you into a hug so tight it squeezes your ribs. “I’m proud of you,” he whispers into your hair. “Even if I hate this.”
You nod into his shoulder. “I’ll send you every new menu draft before it goes live.”
“You better,” he sniffs, pulling back. “And you owe me at least three guest chef invites and one named cocktail.”
“Fine. I’ll name a mezcal drink after you and call it Sad Boy Spring.”
Mr. Martinez chuckles, already writing it on the whiteboard under “Drink Ideas.”
You smile.
You’re really doing this.
You’re going back.

adventures in aerospace
So I recently started working at Large Aircraft Manufacturer. (LAM) The plant I work at employs 30,000 people. The company as a whole employs 170,000. Usually you only hear about LAM when something goes wrong. But no matter how bumbling it seems from the outside, it's way worse on the inside.
Three months after my first day, I have been "graduated" from "training." In reality, I'm still completely worthless on the floor: the training center has given me a paltry subset of the production certificates I need to actually to do my assigned job. A commonly cited statistic at LAM is that a hundred men a day are retiring, each one representing decades of experience, walking out the door, forever. The training center is in the unenviable position of managing a generational replacement, and have resorted to shoveling heaps of zoomers through as fast as possible. (As one of the few people with a visible hairline and who is not wearing a Roblox graphic tee; I am frequently mistaken for an instructor, and asked where the bathroom is, what time the next class starts, etc)
In theory, the training center knows what shop I'm assigned to, and can simply assign me all the required classes. In practice, they do the absolute minimum amount of training in a desperate attempt to relive the crowding in their handful of computer labs and tell graduates to pick up their certs later.
Of course, the irresistible force of the schedule meets the immovable object of the FAA. If you don't have the required production certificate to perform a particular job, you don't touch the airplane. Full stop, end of story.
And so the curtain opens on the stage. It reveals a single senior mechanic, supervising a mechanic who finally received all the certs and is being qualified on this particular job, surrounded by another three trainees. Trainees are less than nothing, absolute scum. At best we can fetch and carry. Mostly we are expected to stay out of the way. And the senior mechanic is only senior in title. He is one of six assembler-installers who is certified to actually work on the plane, out of twenty people on the crew, and spends every day with a permanent audience. He is 23 years old.
("Mechanic"? If you think the jargon at your job is bad, try joining a company that's a century old. Assembler-installers are universally referred to as "mechanics", despite doing work that's nothing like what a car mechanic does, and who are generally paid far worse than FAA certified A&P mechanics. Mechanics are the 11 bravos of LAM, grunts, the single largest category of worker. The tip of the spear. Hooah!)

Large Aircraft Manufacturer is in a dilly of a pickle. All of its existing airframe designs are hilariously antiquated. It tried designing a brand new plane from a clean sheet, and lost billions of dollars to a decade-long integration hell. After that, to save money, it tried just tacking bigger engines on an older design without changing anything else, and the stupid things plowed into the ground in an excruciatingly public manner.
LAM is now trying a middle road. It is upgrading one of its designs that is merely middle aged, rather than ancient, and with proven, de-risked components built in-house, rather than scattering them to subcontractors across the world. And it's still blowing past deadlines and burning billions of dollars LAM really doesn't have to spare.
This is the program I've been assigned to.
Advanced Midbody - Carbon Wing has taken the bold step of just tacking on carbon fiber wings to a conventional aluminum fuselage. Shockingly, AMCW is now stuck in lightning strike testing, due to that troublesome join between conductive aluminum and conductive...ish carbon fiber. But LAM, confident as ever, or perhaps driven by complaints of its customers, has announced that full rate production will begin just next year. Thus the tide of newhires. According to the schedule, we're supposed to jerk from one wingset a month to one wingset a week. That's not going to happen, but, oh well, orders from above move down at the speed of thought, while reality only slowly trickles upwards.
"120 inch pounds? Really?"
I startle upright. I have observed one hundred pi bracket installs, and I will observe a hundred more before I can touch aircraft structure. This is the first disagreement I've witnessed. A more advanced trainee is questioning the torque spec on a fastener. It is not an entirely foolish question-- most sleeve bolts we use are in the 40 in-pounds range. Doubling it that is unusual. I cough the dust off my unused vocal cords and venture an opinion.
"Well hey I could look it up? I guess"
The lead mechanic glances at me, surprised that I'm still awake, then looks away. Excuse enough for me!
I unfold myself from the stool I've been sitting on for the last four hours then hobble over to the nearest Shared Production Workstation.
We do not get Ikea-style step by step instructions on how to put together the airplane. Like any company that's been around for long enough, LAM is a tangled wad of scar tissue, ancient responses to forgotten trauma. If you state a dimension twice, in two different places, then it is possible for an update to only change one of those dimensions, thereby making the engineering drawing ambiguous. Something real bad must have happened in the past as a result of that, so now an ironclad rule is that critical information is only stated once, in one place, a single source of truth.
As a result, the installation plan can be a little... vague. Step 040 might be something like "DRILL HOLE TO SIZE AND TORQUE FASTENERS TO SPEC". What hole size? What torque spec?
Well, they tell you. Eventually.

You are given an engineering drawing, and are expected to figure out how things go together yourself. (Or, more realistically, are told how it's done by coworkers) Step by step instructions aren't done because then dozens of illustrations would have to be updated with every change instead of just one, and drawings are updated surprisingly frequently.
Fasteners are denoted by a big plus sign, with a three letter fastener code on the left and the diameter on the right, like so: "XNJ + 8"
To get the actual part number, we go to the fastener callout table:

(Note the use of a trade name in the table above. There is nothing a mechanic loves more than a good trademark. Permanent straight shank fasteners are always called HI-LOKs™. It's not a cable tie, it's a Panduit™. It's not a wedgelock, it's a Cleco™. Hey man, pass me that offset drill. What, you mean a Zephyr™? Where'd the LAMlube™ go? This also means you have to learn the names of everything twice, one name on the installation plan, and one name it's referred to in conversation.)
We find XNJ on that table, and fill in the diameter: BACB30FM8A. Now we look up the spec table for that fastener:

The eagle eyed among you might note that there is no "diameter: 8" on that table. As a LAM mechanic, you are expected to simply know that "diameter" is measured in 32nds of an inch, which simplifies down to 1/4.
(LAM preserves many old-school skills like fraction reduction and memorizing decimal equivalents like this, like flies caught in amber. Not least is the universal use of Imperial units. Many American manufacturers have been browbeaten into adding parenthetical conversions. Not LAM! Any risk at all of a mechanic seeing a second number and using it by accident is too great, and anyway, it violates SSOT. Lengths are in inches and feet, weights are in pounds, volume is in gallons and if you don't like it then you can go eat shit!)
After 10 minutes of following references, I arrive at that table, print it off, highlight the correct row, and hand it off to my senior mechanic.
"Great, thanks."
Gratified that I have enhanced shareholder value, I sit back down, and immediately fall asleep. Another day living the dream.

Rashad & I have been following each other for over a decade, & he’s always been so incredibly supportive of the design illustrations I create of his legendary Sister each year, so to work so closely with him & help him make creative decisions for this doll, was truly special & sentimental to me. From era choice, outfit decisions, skin tone, hair blend, head sculpt selection & more…it really is such a meticulously detailed process to create a fashion doll, especially one as iconic as this! The doll has a custom head sculpt created in Aaliyah’s likeness, & it really captures her. I requested that she have the beauty mark near her eyebrow too!
It was also really important that a black creative was involved in the development of this doll alongside Rashad, so I’m happy to have contributed in any way I could. As a longtime Aaliyah fan & having so much love & respect for her legacy, this doll just further solidifies her icon status & I’m really happy that she is being honoured with this doll. She is beyond deserving & everyone involved that made this doll come to fruition, did such a beautiful job. I truly wish Aaliyah was here to see this, as she loved this brand as a child. It’s just so amazing that her legacy continues to blossom so beautifully! I hope everyone that wants this doll is able to add her to their collection. She’s a must have 🖤

Build-A-Yandere™
This concept came to me this morning, and now I cannot unthink it. Imagine walking into this pastel nightmare of a store. You know those build-a-bear workshops? the ones where you stuff a teddy and pick out little outfits? Well, what if it's that but for creating your own obsessive fictional boyfriend/girlfriend???
THE CONCEPT:
• you start with a base model (the mysterious type? cute & playful type? The bubbly type? stoic, grumpy type?)
• pick their obsession level on a slider (1 being "sends good morning texts" to 10 being "has memorized your coffee order from three different cafes")
• customize their "love language" (gift giving, quality time, definitely not breaking into your house to leave flowers)
• choose their aesthetic (dark academia, cottagecore, cyberpunk, etc.)
• select their special talent (cooking, singing, martial arts, advanced lockpicking)
BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE
You get to pick their backstory from a dropdown menu:
• "tragic past but working on it in therapy"
• "secretly a supernatural entity"
• "normal person who just loves REALLY intensely"
• "reformed villain trying to be better"
• "cursed to love one person for eternity"
When you are done, you get a little certificate - basically a marriage certificate if you overly think about it - that says, "Congratulations on your new devoted companion!" and they come with a care guide that's just increasingly unhinged suggestions.
THE REALLY FUN PART: they have different "expansion packs" you can buy later
• seasonal outfits
• new hobbies for them to excel at
• additional tragic backstory elements
• "jealousy management" accessories
