I'm anticipating a ramble (as I am wont to do) so under the cut it goes

Gonna start by saying I DO like Shadow Milk. I really do. It took me a little while for him to grow on me when he first appeared, admittedly (ESPECIALLY his voice...), but I am genuinely fond of the little blue jester man. But he's certainly not my favorite, far from it. That title belongs to Burning Spice and Burning Spice alone lol. The only reason I ever turned the English audio back on (I usually play the game in Japanese, I love hearing my fave anime characters speak lol) was so I could hear that gorgeous baritone of his... Burning Spice is everything to me. I love his design, I love his voice, I love his dialogue, I love his personality, I love him soooooo much. He's my babygirl. If Silent Salt turns out anything like the character I've constructed inside of my head, then he will share the #1 spot with Spice. I'll go ahead and say that right away

I'm upset because, like you said, it feels like he got majorly shafted while Shadow Milk gets all the praise and attention. Mystic Flour as well, poor girl, but I'm focusing on Spice just to drive the point home a bit better. He didn't even get a fucking countdown. What was his little merch thing? That weird ass candle (I thought it was a vase at first lol) and that's it. Furthermore, his story feels the least developed. There was and is SO MUCH that could have been said about him as a person as well as his dynamic/connection with Golden Cheese, that wasn't for whatever reason. Episodes 5 and 6 feel like they're missing something (and you feel what the "something" is in that brief flashback to Spice's past. There's more to what became of him than "I was bored", there HAS to be. Boredom is a symptom, not the cause. I maintain that this theory of mine has merit, and it would've been nice if they dove deeper into it than they did), you know? And I hate it. I hate that Spice is basically the forgotten middle child of the Beasts while Shadow Milk gets all the glory. Seriously, for Shadow Milk:

They changed their YT avatar to him for a while (it has ALWAYS been Gingerbrave, they never changed it once to anyone else all these years). iirc they did this on Twitter too

They dedicate an HOUR LONG commentary video to episode 7 and Shadow Milk (arguably fair, because it WAS the 4th anniversary. But even so. Did they do this for any other Beast? Any other episode? Any other anniversary?)

They give him a costume (a legendary one, at that) plus a set with his Ancient. NO OTHER Beast/Ancient pair has that, and I struggle to imagine they ever will. Do you understand what I would do to have a BS/GC costume set? DO YOU???

They make an exclusive, limited edition plushie (that caused a massive shitstorm iirc, justice for everyone that got fucked over during that and fuck scalpers)

They make a whole ass pop-up store event themed entirely around Shadow Milk and episodes 7 and 8

Why? Because he's the fan favorite lol. He's long since been the golden child of this community, and now we know he's Devsisters' golden child, too. (And they're desperate for money because they're drowning in debt. That's also probably why they released Shadow Milk on the 3rd anniversary: to drum up interest on a milestone anniversary by bringing in a beloved character. Thematically/narratively, Shadow Milk should've been released last. But that's just my opinion.)

Again, I really do like Shadow Milk. I call him "Walmart Bill Cipher" affectionately (and because he genuinely does remind me of Bill. In fact, I think Bill might've inspired SM to some degree). But it's unfortunate that other characters, the other Beasts especially, are pushed aside and ignored just so Shadow Milk can hog all the spotlight. It is with a very intense grimace that I agree that Shadow Milk is a Tumble sexyman. He fits the stereotype to a T. It would serve us all well to accept that truth. He even got added to the Tumblr sexyman wiki before it turned to flour lol. Burning Spice is... NOT a Tumblr sexyman. He is a regular old hunk. Tumblr was never in the business of liking big, beefy hunks, at least not the Tumblr I knew 10 years ago lol.

I'm also, to reference it again, just really disappointed that so little was and is done to explore the other Beast/Ancient pairs - and the fandom is guilty of this, too (not to knock the PV/SM anaylses at all! They're all fantastic and I genuinely do understand and love the deep, complex connection between them!). To go back to BS and GC, because they're my lifeblood (not just for shipping reasons I swear)... it's particularly egregious to me that THEIR dynamic wasn't given the attention and detail it deserves. They are LIFE AND DEATH, the very foundation of the world itself, things I (personally) consider significantly more important than truth and deceit because it is from life and death that all else springs forth. Truth and deceit are things you actively look for; life (abundance) and death (destruction) are just there, everywhere you look, even within yourself. You can close your eyes, ears, heart to the truth and you can learn to shun, decipher, defend against deceit; there is no escape from life nor death. None whatsoever. And so much can be done with that. So much can be done with them. Burning Spice and Golden Cheese need each other in the exact same way that Shadow Milk and Pure Vanilla need each other. They parallel each other quite a bit, too. They're so similar and so different. They could have and SHOULD HAVE had so much to say to and about each other, like what Shadow Milk and Pure Vanilla have. But that didn't happen. Didn't happen with Dark Cacao and Mystic Flour, either. All of that love and care and philosophical exploration goes to the clown and the Jesus Christ allegory. Which is FINE, I'm not saying to leave those two hanging, just... show some of that love to the beefcake and the bird, too. And Korean Batman (Cacao reminds me of Batman, I'm sorry 🤣) and Ms. Angel of Death, too. Please, man. Truth and Deceit aren't the only dichotomy that matters and is worthy of thought and discussion

We get ONE dragon update a year, and they always leave us on the most painful cliffhanger of all time each time. (And this last one... I have many issues, but the most glaring one of all: WHERE THE FUCK IS FIRE SPIRIT??? WHY ISN'T HE IN THE STORY??? HE IS INTRINSICALLY LINKED TO PITAYA DRAGON! THEY HAVE AN UNBREAKABLE BOND BECAUSE OF THEIR DEAL THAT GRANTED HIM SOME OF PITAYA'S POWER AND SAVED HIS LIFE! HE SHOULD BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THIS ARC! HE SHOULD BE AT THE FOREFRONT! Hell, remember Gingerbrave and co.'s quest to find where that wizard compass is pointing, and to find a place for them to build a peaceful life away from the Witches? Me neither lol. Sea Fairy's great sacrifice with Sugarteara and the cursed pearl? (SF was done SO dirty in Kingdom, she's an actual character in OB and in CRK all she cares about is Moonlight, to the point that she lets an entire civilization fall to ruin because she refuses to do her fucking job) The Xylitol gang... Well, as of writing this, that's the next update... Which will give us another legendary cookie, hardly 3 months after Dreamweaver lol. Fuck Stevia Nova, I already don't give a damn. Give me more Xylitol Nova and Astronaut and that's it

I have a lot more to say (especially about BS and GC, God I could talk about them FOREVER, they're so interesting to me), but I think I've rambled enough lol. "India’s announcement that it aims to reach net zero emissions by 2070 and to meet fifty percent of its electricity requirements from renewable energy sources by 2030 is a hugely significant moment for the global fight against climate change. India is pioneering a new model of economic development that could avoid the carbon-intensive approaches that many countries have pursued in the past – and provide a blueprint for other developing economies.

The scale of transformation in India is stunning. Its economic growth has been among the highest in the world over the past two decades, lifting of millions of people out of poverty. Every year, India adds a city the size of London to its urban population, involving vast construction of new buildings, factories and transportation networks. Coal and oil have so far served as bedrocks of India’s industrial growth and modernisation, giving a rising number of Indian people access to modern energy services. This includes adding new electricity connections for 50 million citizens each year over the past decade. 

The rapid growth in fossil energy consumption has also meant India’s annual CO2 emissions have risen to become the third highest in the world. However, India’s CO2 emissions per person put it near the bottom of the world’s emitters, and they are lower still if you consider historical emissions per person. The same is true of energy consumption: the average household in India consumes a tenth as much electricity as the average household in the United States.  

India’s sheer size and its huge scope for growth means that its energy demand is set to grow by more than that of any other country in the coming decades. In a pathway to net zero emissions by 2070, we estimate that most of the growth in energy demand this decade would already have to be met with low-carbon energy sources. It therefore makes sense that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced more ambitious targets for 2030, including installing 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity, reducing the emissions intensity of its economy by 45%, and reducing a billion tonnes of CO2. 

These targets are formidable, but the good news is that the clean energy transition in India is already well underway. It has overachieved its commitment made at COP 21- Paris Summit [a.k.a. 2015, at the same conference that produced the Paris Agreement] by already meeting 40% of its power capacity from non-fossil fuels- almost nine years ahead of its commitment, and the share of solar and wind in India’s energy mix have grown phenomenally. Owing to technological developments, steady policy support, and a vibrant private sector, solar power plants are cheaper to build than coal ones. Renewable electricity is growing at a faster rate in India than any other major economy, with new capacity additions on track to double by 2026...

Subsidies for petrol and diesel were removed in the early 2010s, and subsidies for electric vehicles were introduced in 2019. India’s robust energy efficiency programme has been successful in reducing energy use and emissions from buildings, transport and major industries. Government efforts to provide millions of households with fuel gas for cooking and heating are enabling a steady transition away from the use of traditional biomass such as burning wood. India is also laying the groundwork to scale up important emerging technologies such as hydrogen, battery storage, and low-carbon steel, cement and fertilisers..."

2. Earwax Management : Let your ears naturally clean themselves. Earwax helps protect your ears from dust, dirt, and bacteria. Do not use eard buds DO. NOT. Baby girlies please don't it can cause problems in hearing and affect your eardrum.

If you have excessive earwax buildup that causes discomfort or affects your hearing, consult a doctor for safe removal.

3. Protection: Wear ear protection in noisy environments, such as concerts, construction sites, or when using loud equipment like lawnmowers or power tools. Earplugs or earmuffs can help prevent hearing damage.

4. Avoiding Water : Keep water out of your ears while bathing, swimming, or showering. Use earplugs or a shower cap to protect your ears, especially if you've had ear surgery or have a history of ear infections.

5. Electronic devices : use airpods, earphones or headphone max 3 hours not more than that and always keep the volume at the adequate level in order not to affect your ear and brain.

6. Regular Check-ups : Visit an audiologist or healthcare professional for regular ear check-ups, especially if you experience changes in hearing, ear pain, or other ear-related issues.

7. Healthy Lifestyle : Maintain a healthy lifestyle, as conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes can impact your ear health. Stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, and manage stress levels.

Taking these simple steps can help keep your ears healthy and functioning well. 🫶

i’m always the listener, but it’s never returned:

i’m the one who listens always there, ear on, taking in everyone’s venting but when i speak, it’s like they can’t hear me without pushing back. i feel this need to reply to every text, every message, until they start assuming i’ll always be there, like i’m a given. and when i finally say no, i end up over-explaining, justifying why i can’t, as if i owe them my reasons.

i used to think i had to be everyone’s safe place, the one who says yes everytime, who stays up late for their calls, who puts their needs first. but i’m seeing that doesn’t work. sometimes i’m just a moment in their story, someone they needed for a while before moving on. i’ve spent so long being what they need that i don’t know what i need anymore. i am wondering when i started feeling so distant from myself. Why do I feel the need to hold my opinions and feelings? what's holding me back?

i’m trying to change that now saying no without a whole explanation, letting myself be quiet when i need to. i’m learning i can’t be everyone’s hero, and i shouldn’t have to be. i need to be mine first.

i don’t need to always be there, texting first, saying hello. i don’t need to blame myself when things go wrong, or hold onto broken thread just to prove our relationship is going fine. i’m learning to be okay on my own, to let go of what doesn’t fit, to stop being everyone’s everything

It’s fascinating to me how they always seem to do role-reversal for Xena and Gabrielle when it comes to the AU/Uber/Reincarnation episodes with the exception of ‘When Fates Collide’ and the Harry, Mattie and Annie episodes. But ‘Between The Lines’ specifically makes that a thematic motif for Xena and Gabrielle’s next lifetimes. Shakti is a Warrior Prince and Aminestra is a pacifist guardian as the Mother of Peace. It’s not until you get to almost the end of the show that you realize that this role-reversal transition is fate and things have got to work out just so for it to be as it is with what you see in ‘Between The Lines’. Like… for example… with Gabrielle’s moral quandary in her Season 4 arc that she believes she’s using too much violence and she doubles down on the guilt of that belief because of Eli and what he says about life and love being The Truth and The Way. He shows Gabrielle that his ability to heal is all because of his conviction to non-violent methods in serving The Greater Good. So she ends up doubling down on both her guilt in using violence and in her love for Xena even though they contradict each other so she then ends up using violence because of her love for her.

But all throughout their future lives exploration in the episode ‘Between The Lines’ during the India arc, you just see her hacking and slashing away with a sword as Shakti. This feels extremely hypocritical at first… but when you watch it again after seeing the whole show you’re just like “Oh, of course” because her Way all along was to protect and defend through violence. Her next life would be the Way it is because she ends up taking Xena’s mantle and continuing her legacy as the Warrior Princess. So I wonder if she ever questions why she is who she is in her next lifetime even though she’s going through this whole spiritual journey with pacifism and would throw away her defensive weapon very soon. I wonder if she ever puts two and two together on what is revealed to her in ‘Between The Lines’ in searching for her Way. It’s just so fascinating to me how that episode is not only the one that informs us of future episodes but also brings in a new context to what we saw of past episodes. That the role-reversal transition is the fated trajectory for Xena and Gabrielle’s individual arcs because most of their alternate reality, afterlife and soul incarnation experiences would put them in a state and position where they are in opposition of each other and where their spiritual essences permeate into each other because of influencing and changing each other emotionally so much so that they become each other.

It all makes complete sense on rewatches. What seems inconsistent or even OOC at the time just turns out to be very clever retconning and foreshadowing because the two characters do eventually become each other. But I just find ‘Between The Lines’ in particular such a fascinating episode because that episode makes what was once just a fun experimentation for the creators a purposeful thematic motif that changes the character representation and development significantly for Xena and Gabrielle for the entire TV show not only forwards, but also backwards because you see that it’s actually how any of their arcs happen. It’s so damn profound.

It’s like what they say about time-travel. If you see what is to come for your future, you can change the present. But then,… if you change the present,… then you also end up recontextualizing the past because that’s fate. That’s how fate works. It’s the destined path that is created by their present and future experiences which seems completely coincidental to them at first UNTIL they get a look-in on it ahead of time and they make changes based on the experiences and knowledge they’ve accumulated from that look-in. I’ve always understood that that’s what ‘Between The Lines’ - or even the whole India arc - is. It’s the look-in to their individual changes going forward. But it specifically hits more with Gabrielle than it does with Xena because Xena’s changes aren’t so shocking. They’re significant changes too but the thematic visual of it doesn’t hit anywhere near as hard as it does with Gabrielle’s changes because her changes are a sensurround jolt that impact you when they happen. You feel those changes as if they’re happening inside your body. It’s a visceral experience with Gabrielle, whereas with Xena, it’s just a visual experience because we’re used to the chaotic tumultuous drama with her. Not with Gabrielle.

Her karmic cycle is that of not just becoming a warrior and hero, but also validating that masculine and active transition within her that you see happening because of becoming the warrior and hero. The Warrior Princess as Gabrielle or Warrior Prince as Shakti. Her destined Way. Her path, direction, trajectory, truth. That core being and nature that she was searching for and working towards in Season 4 in the India arc - of which she only gets wrong initially because she ignores what Shakti taught her and relies more so on what Eli teaches her when it’s the mehndi that contains Truth to who she is.

I think the message is very telling. Follow your own Way. Don’t follow someone else’s because they inspire you. That Way might actually go against your soul’s karma. You can be inspired by a person but you don’t need to emulate them or take on their lifestyle and worldview. See, Gabrielle never just had that problem with Xena, although that was the most obvious. Almost anyone she came across that she was in awe of she tries to be like and so struggles to gain their approval when she fails - as she inevitably would because it’s not right for her.

The only reason why Gabrielle takes on Xena’s mantle is because Xena is already so much a part of her core self as her soulmate. As her other half to a whole. As her Yin. None of this really makes any sense until her endgame where it is confirmed without a doubt that she’s Yang. If the Yin-yang chakram represents who these characters were, then it must also represent who they will become because Yin-yang is a thematic and symbolic visual in TV art/entertainment for change and evolution of Self.

The human representation of Yin-Yang is embodied through the lead characters and the lead characters are represented through the visual symbolism of Yin-yang. But it’s Gabrielle that truly makes that apparent within the overall story of what ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ is as both the author of The Xena Scrolls and the successor of the Warrior Princess’ legacy. In Gabrielle’s next life (as Shakti) she will follow Xena (as Arminestra) 50 years later but she will be an active party instead of a passive one - as rightfully shown in the episode ‘Between The Lines’ where they also reveal to us that their respective karmic cycles are eternally intertwined. That they do literally share the same soul and were just waiting for one another to meet in every lifetime, be it the past, present or future so they could bring out the best in each other whether as friends, lovers or even enemies. The point is for them to always learn from the presence of each other and that’s why they’re The Ultimate Ship.
