Roman’s List

Synopsis: This is 100% romangst, based on a single line from this latest video. That’s it. I do not apologize. I did not edit this. Goodbye.

When Roman wrote, prose flowed from his mind like water from a tap. Steady most of the time and of questionable quality depending on the day, but flow it did. Verses came to Roman as easily as breathing. If one had occasional asthma, that was. Roman could pull out rhymes like so many dimes from his silver-lined pockets, even though his go-to metallic was gold.

Roman was a writer. Roman was a creative.

As such, Roman’s room was filled to the brim with notebooks. Notebooks filled with scribbles and ideas, sketches and poetry that never saw the light of day and love letter after love letter after diary entry. Notebooks that were as empty and clean as the day that he acquired them. Primed and ready to use in whatever way the prince saw fit, if he ever found the perfect use for a cherry red journal with a golden leaf pattern winding the cover.

However, there was one notebook that was not like the others. This notebook--plain and black, with a bound leather spine and a white satin built in bookmark--spent most of its time in the small crevice on the back of the prince’s mirror.

It was a difficult place to keep a journal, especially when Roman found something to put in said journal at least once a day, meaning that his poor innocent mirror was being moved far too often to excuse the elaborate hiding spot.

The journal contained a list. Roman, as a creative, was not one for making itemized lists. Really, that was more of Logan’s thing. However, this specific list had been ongoing for years now. If the notebook that the list filled was not imaginary, Roman would probably be on his third or fourth notebook.

Roman had started this list when Thomas was in his late highschool years. About the time that he was deciding what to do with his future, to be exact. The first entry was simple. A bullet point and a mistake. The first documented of many.

I lost us the lead in the school play. Thomas has decided to major in chemistry.

It wasn’t much, at the time. Roman didn’t even truly remember what it was that made him write down what was then seen as a colossal failure on his part. One minute he had been disappointed by Thomas’s decision to give up on his acting dreams, and the next he was huddled on the floor of his room, his reflection staring back at him from an awkward angle in his mirror, his breath coming in short gasps and chastisements running through his mind on a loop. Failure, failure, failure, failure, failure, failure--

When Roman came back from his spiral, his bright red glitter gel pen was already in his hands, and the words were already scripting themselves across the page of the notebook he hadn’t remembered reaching for. It was only when the mistake was written down that Roman felt the weight--or at least a very small part of it--release from his chest.

And there was the first on the list of Roman’s mistakes. Written neatly for future reference, to be looked back upon so that he would never ever fail Thomas in such a way again.

Of course, everyone knew that that was not the last time that Roman would let Thomas down.

The list grew slowly at first. Roman was still confident in his ability to be the perfect creativity for Thomas. He brought ideas whenever Thomas needed them. He encouraged Thomas’s passions, even though they were no longer a part of his career path. He pushed for Thomas to pursue his dreams in between engineering classes and organic chemistry papers, and for Thomas to pursue cute boys.

The only times the notebook was pulled out and Roman’s list grew longer was when the pursuit of dreams interfered a bit too much with Thomas’s work.

He never wanted to hurt Logan. Honest.

The notebook and the list was almost forgotten when Thomas finally gave up on chemical engineering and decided to become an actor. By the time Vine came around, Roman felt practically unbeatable. Sure, every once in a while he would do something that garnered the need of the notebook and its list, but more often than not, Roman was unstoppable.

He considered getting rid of the list.

On July 15, 2017, Roman’s list of mistakes nearly doubled in size.

After Virgil had revealed his name and Roman had apologized for making the anxious nelly feel so unwelcome as a part of Thomas, everything suddenly became a lot more clear.

He had been making mistakes for so long without even knowing it.

Every harsh name that Roman had ever aimed at Virgil was added to the list. All the times that Roman mocked his very real worries and sent Thomas out unprepared into the world were added to the list. Each time that he shot Virgil a look that made the anxious side flinch away--as if Roman were the villain, and goodness gracious Zeus above, if Virgil wasn’t the villain in those situations, perhaps he was--were added to the list. All the times that Roman doubted Patton’s judgement about his “shadowling” were added to the list. Entire years of Roman’s life were added to the list, because hurting Virgil was hurting Thomas, because like it or not Virgil did not, in fact, set out to hurt Thomas, and how could Roman have been so stupid to not realize that--

After that, Roman decided that he needed to be more cautious.

He needed to check himself. The list was kept for a reason. So that he could stop failing Thomas. He decided that he would be more open minded. He couldn’t chance hurting Thomas like he had with Virgil ever again.

So when Deceit revealed himself to Thomas, that was how Roman approached the situation.

Even with the list in mind, Roman still made mistakes. He got defensive around Deceit, modeling after Patton, and every night afterwards, Roman would add those names to the list. It was like Virgil all over again. Sure, it wasn’t obvious now that Deceit was another knight in shining armor for Thomas, but Roman had been wrong before. He had been wrong too many times to count now. He couldn’t take that chance again.

When the callback came up, even Roman’s list couldn’t advise him.

Deceit wanted to go to the callback. Patton was saying that that was wrong. Roman had never before made a mistake when agreeing with Patton. Patton was almost always right. He knew what was good for Thomas. On the other hand, shutting out Deceit was almost exactly like the previous mistakes that Roman had made in regards to Virgil.

And on the third pretend-it-doesn’t-exist hand, Roman desperately wanted to go to the callback.

He wanted it more than he had wanted anything in quite a long time. And Roman was a selfish creature. Selfishness had appeared in his list on more than one occasion.

So Roman did what he thought was best--not what he wanted, no, never what he wanted, the stakes were too large to risk yet another failure against Thomas--and Roman listened to Patton. He sentenced Thomas to the wedding.

A mistake was not added to the list that night. He had finally done something right.

Then along came the day of the wedding, and Thomas was hurting. Roman didn’t quite know how--of course he didn’t, he was too stupid to figure it out--but he knew that this was his fault.

Patton tried to make light of it. Good, caring Patton tried to fix Roman’s mess, and ungrateful Roman just kept messing it up.

Everything tumbled downhill after that. Roman’s progress was Humpty-Dumpty, and his fall came in the form of aggressive overcorrection of his actions and a nervous laugh at an admittedly funny name.

And a nail in the coffin.

A confirmation that this failure was the final nail in the coffin.

“I thought I was your hero?”

A shake of a head.

Roman sunk out to his room and shoved his mirror off of his wall without a thought to the fragile glass it was made of. He pulled out the notebook with shaking fingers and grabbed a pen off his desk with a complete lack of care.

Item after item was added to the list. The pages of the notebook crumpled under his careless hand as he gripped the pages with an intensity that he didn’t even know how to feel. The pages were wet, his tears hitting the pages and drying in rough patches on the paper.

He didn’t even know himself what the real mistakes were. He wrote them all down for good measure.

By the time that Roman ran out of energy, the list was almost incomprehensible. Words scratched out and doubled over, not following the lines of the notebook and in atrocious handwriting.

But it would have to do. Because Roman couldn’t afford any more mistakes. This list could not afford to get any longer than it already was. He couldn’t fail Thomas this catastrophically ever again.

Knitting to Coding!

Second World War! A big deal for the world history but more than that it became important to me, as I revealed the fact that Knitting was used as an ‘Espionage language’ and since then it became the hobby for women and not men anymore! I started to think about what knitting could mean? Can a code really be knitted? I guess, after learning these facts I couldn’t stop myself from thinking how and what kind of information could have been coded by people through sweaters, socks, scarfs, etc! Accidentally! during this time, I attended a lecture in my faculty by the architects who re-built our Faculty building and the reasoning behind it! Getting through the lecture, he said something which I will never forget, as it literally changed my course of actions and perspective! He said, ‘Do you guys know, Portsmouth was very important during Second World War? Portsmouth was also extensively bombed by Germans during the continuous airstrikes through years of Second World War. Unfortunately, the place where our faculty building stands today, during that time was a residential area with rows of houses; which were bombed! and most of them were destroyed’. This information made me crave more insights on Second World War, as now it was not only connected to me via a hobby of knitting but by ‘home’! I lived in this city for 6 years! Even though one would argue that my homeland is India and will always remain India, however, a part of my heart belongs to this place now! It’s my Home!

Therefore, I made few trips to Civic library, in order to obtain maps of bombed areas in the city during Second World War and looked for diaries from survivors. Some of the stories took me in the time, I felt like I was walking in the same phase of history; they were so beautifully and poetically written, while others were teary and sad - it mentioned about loosing home or fear of never seeing their loved ones. Those questions which I had in mind while reading about Second World War surfaced again: What knitting could mean? and Can a code really be knitted? I started looking at coding languages and soon after I landed onto ‘Morse code’. I also found a few articles mentioning how Morse coding was used during the war for communication and how women were hired by British Intelligence to script codes through knitting. Hence, I found an international Morse code elements for all letters, digits, accented letters and punctuation marks. (FYI: Morse code is named for Samuel F. B. Morse, an inventor of the telegraph. Morse code is a character encoding scheme used in telecommunication that encodes text characters as standardized sequences of two different signal durations called dots and dashes or dits and dahs.)

The question now was, What do I code? a letter? a sentence? a paragraph? and how do I knit them? I began with my heart: the word ‘Home’. I coded ‘home’ in dots and dashes. So the first set of questions were fulfilled by now; leading me onto the second question of How to? For this, I tried to knit a dot and dash and dash and dot in knitting patch. This came out really nice, but I did not wanted to continue over black and silver and so I tried to advance my experiment by coding the same word through on a white background with green and yellow thread instead - just to see how different it would read when done like that. After this, I paused! I looked! but I felt very exposed, as if just by seeing this patch with dots and dashes, world would know what I’m saying; even though I wanted to communicate but feeling less exposed. Hence, I tried to conceal this dots and dashes through the entire row instead of few stitches. Gradually, my word ‘Home’ became more like a scarf instead of a knitting patch which you can show to the world by holding in hand - this scarf was wrapped around my neck! making me feel warm as I would be, when in home.

After my meeting with Alison Ellen, I had started to think: How can I draw my knitting pieces? Will they look different to architectural drawings? If they will, how different will they look? To satisfy this hunch, I started looking/reading books on how to draw knitting? Can they be done on normal plain white paper or do they require a specific grid to follow? I soon after ended up with a book called: ‘Knitting: Stitch-led Design’ by Alison Ellen, where she gives a step-by-step instructions with explanations, charts, diagrams, photos, and techniques to discuss in depth and to understand different outcomes and how 'problems' can be used creatively. This book really helped me to learn how to read diagrams or charts, in other words drawings made for knit pieces. In the process of acquiring this skills to read these charts, made me curious, if I can try and make a drawing for my own knit piece in order to see how different these representations will look in comparison to the haptic feel of the knit.

Furthermore, while thinking on how to make this drawings, I realized that I needed some data such as how many rows I had cast, how many loops/stitch I had on my needle, how can I symbolically represent different type of stitches that I had cast on? Is there a dictionary of symbols where it not only becomes a language for me, but is universally understood and accepted?

I looked for books, where symbols have been shown and used. Alison’s book, Knitting: Stitch-led design also included a brief introduction with the basic patterns symbolically. So I got the basic ingredients ready but then the tough question was: Where do I draw? i.e. plain paper? grid paper? graph paper? and   with what? pencil? pen? brush? This was harder to answer than I realized, but eventually after trying all, I felt comfortable with squared grid paper! and surprisingly, since the beginning with the idea of drawing, I always picked pencil unconsciously! So there was my answer! I hereby had data, medium and method but the only thing missing at the time was reasoning of Why this was interesting or why was I so curious in the first place! and by doing so What will I achieve? But as they say, ‘Follow your instincts, they take you to the most beautiful places you have ever imagined even existed!’ so perhaps I followed my intuition and let it lead the way!

Ricky Gervais at Guildford's G Live was followed the week by a trip to Edinburgh. Whilst there, after John Hunt’s ‘After Work Blues’ at The Jazz Barr, we headed to the Usher Hall for DMA's where the floor was a riot of 14 - 18 year olds making the most of their youth and the school break; lifting the music just from their mass attendance.

The day after, we past Isabel Caswell coming out of M&S in Sheffield, realising ‘Calendar Girls’ was in town, whilst heading over to the other end of town for an intimate performance from Chloë Foy and her band at Cafe No.9. Stood around one microphone, the perfect acoustic sound detailed her delicate songs in the highest, audible quality. It was clear there were a few returning regulars filling up the venue but we managed to find the perfect position to hear the mix as, due to the nature of the set-up, sitting on the left hand side may have been too piano heavy. 

Mixing folk with classical, the dynamic performance showcased some great melodic writing, whilst using her voice as a true instrument, rapidly putting herself in line with Phoebe Bridgers and Lisa Hannigan.

We were back in London on Monday for the first of Glen Hansard’s 2 nights at The Barbican. Like when I'd seen him with The Frames at the Scala, neither evening was sold out. Since the success of the film and musical 'Once', from around that time, featuring the Oscar winning 'Falling Slowly' and the equally popular 'When Your Mind's Made Up', his two LPs solo, which came either side of 'Didn't He Ramble', expectedly followed on from that style of writing and production The Swell Season (his duo with film co-star and former flame, Markéta Irglová) possessed. Now touring his fantastic fourth full length under his own name 'The Wild Willing', this record seems to be as important to him as 'Didn't He Ramble' in comparison to his other two solo efforts 'Rhythm & Repose' and 'A Season On The Line', which were not featured at all in the first night's setlist. In fact, this new album happened from moments of inspiration and improvisation that took place in between takes from pre-penned songs - eventually casting aside the original plan altogether as the musicians involved propelled Glen's threads of ideas into songs; disrupting the flow if songs were heading in a certain area. 

Having been sent the new record’s audio in advance, before I was able to buy the vinyl, it arrived with a strong feeling of weather - like a storm was coming in; as featured at the end of the first night's opener 'Wait Of The World', which eventually became subsumed in wind; emerging like a fog. Balanced on a stall, just for this opener, Glen asked for a set list or possibly a lyric sheet during this new composition? 

For the last few years, Glen Hansard had been travelling as a 13-piece, soul revue, big band. Tonight the horn section had been disbanded but had the addition of acoustic guitarist, Javier Mass, (making them 11 on stage) joining them from the second song 'I'll Be You Be Me' - a studio improvisation in France; connecting with the idea of intimacy, surrendering to someone until you become each other. You can hear a split second of Bowie's vocal rasp on the loop (from a cassette demo of the Queen and Bowie session for ‘Under Pressure’) that David Cleary added to the track as the beat.

The end mantra of the third song played 'Don't Settle' built on the advice Liam Clancy gave to Bob Dylan, before the theatre went pitch black for a pre-recorded vocal performance from Aida Shahghasemi at the end of following new number 'Fool's Game' - a song they opened with the next night.

After 4 songs from 'The Wild Willing', a sigh of relief met the plucked intro chords to 'Didn't He Ramble''s 'My Little Ruin, which soon lead onto 'Once' film soundtrack favourite 'When Your Mind's Made Up', which Glen halted momentarily on night 1 just as the drums and bass came in. The 5/4 time signature seemed fine to me – especially with one of the best drummers in the business. On night 2, the Irish singer teased the title lyric about the UK having not made up their mind about Brexit before he showed how his solo/acoustic Swell Season song 'Leave' took on a whole new meaning. Joking aside, the band leant into the shift in dynamic even more so; covering the particular tones of the album’s Iranian musicians, who were absent, along with Aida, after being refused visas into the UK.

After 'Winning Streak' from 'DHR', another 4 songs (including 'Mary', 'Brother's Keeper' and 'The Closing Door') from 'The Wild Willing' were aired, mixing in The Specials' 'Ghost Town' (night 1 only) with 'Race To The Bottom' - a title which is already a play on AC/DC's 'It's A Long Way To The Top...', whilst the lyrics are diary entries of rhyming couplets from day to day occurrences from his writing sessions in Paris. Night 2 saw the only outing for a ‘Between Two Shores’ track with ‘Roll On Slow’ which lead on to a cover from Van Morrison’s former band, Them, in the shape of ‘Gloria’, with help from an audience member on lead vocals.

'Didn't He Ramble' (recorded for the 'Season On The Line' ep and not for the LP of the same name) saw Glen pass his electric guitar down to Javier to improvise a solo, which was better on night 1 but night 2 lead to an extra chorus at the end. 

With Glen coming to the front of the stage to sing 'Grace Beneath The Pines', he strummed a few of the chords on guitar for it on night 2 before putting it down. Despite having his string section with him, Glen decided to sing the fiddle part at the end of his 'DHR' solo, piano song 'McCormack's Wall', clapping along with the audience. This song was traded for a completely unplugged (like ‘Grace Beneath…’) version of 'Falling Slowly' on the second night, with the strings and keys watching closely for the changes. Maybe he was about to perform it on night one too before Javier Mas returned to the stage a song too early. Glen asked him to stay to duet one from his former boss: Leonard Cohen's 'Famous Blue Raincoat'. Night 2 saw the band go into Cohen's 'Bird On The Wire' after DHR's 'Her Mercy', Night 1, instead saw a snippet of 'Wedding Ring', from the same album, thrown in at the end, which wouldn't have been right now that Curtis Sonny Fowlkes is no longer in the band to come to the centre stage to sing a verse. After an old Frames rock number ('Revelate' on night 1, switched for 'Fitzcarralado' on night 2) the whole band did get an opportunity to take turns to sing a part of Pete Seeger's 'Passing Through' as the last song on the opening night, and Brendan Benhan's 'The Auld Triangle' at the end of the second.

As intended, he's certainly uncomfortable again and both nights proved how beauty exists outside of comfort. Don't settle. 

On night 2 we had gone to Rough Trade East beforehand for 'Idlewild: in conversation'. With no live performance, I went down to Southampton Engine Rooms to see them the following Tuesday.

The next day, we caught a bit of Lauren Aquilina's [mostly] solo performance at the House of St Barnabas private bar in Soho, where we’d previously been taken to by Starsailor, before catching the second half of Newton Faulkner’s set at the London Palladium – a place he deserves to be after the career he’s had so far.

After Ed Byrne at Kingston’s Outside The Box, we headed over the road for a sleepy Peter Doherty & The Puta Madres New Slang gig. We were back at Outside The Box for Tom Rosenthal & Ian Stirling as the month came to a close.
