One of my all time biggest pet peeves with historical(ish) fantasy is when the writer constructs a religion with a clear bias that it's stupid and false and therefore only the Stupid People and/or commoners believe in it and all the smart/elite main characters are like, quasi-atheists or otherwise just routinely flout established religious conventions of orthodoxy and/or orthopraxy because they're Too Smart for it or etc.

It's usually an extension of assumptions that people in the past were just less intelligent than in the contemporary, just being like "I know that the sun is a star millions of miles away that the earth orbits, but this ancient religion describes it as a chariot flying through the sky" and not really bothering to learn the context and just (consciously or subconsciously) settling on 'that's a crazy thing to think and was probably believed in because they were Stupid'.

And that whole attitude pisses me off so much. People were as 'smart' 10,000 years ago as they are today. These beliefs aren't just desperate, random flailing to explain phenomena that could not directly be accounted for either, it's not like people just looked at the sun and went "Uhhh I don't know what the fuck that thing is, actually. I guess it might be a chariot or a boat or something?? Yeah let's go with that." and based entire religious practices on this. Every well-established belief system exists within broader contexts of cultural values/subjective perceptions of reality/knowledge systems/etc, and exist as part of a historical continuum of religious practices that came before. Even when not Materially Correct, they have context and internal logic, they're not always dead literal with zero levels of allegory, and they're never a result of stupidity.

The weirdly competent Doctor

So! The Watchtower's Medical Bay is a hub of constant Activity. With the number of Heroes who work under the Justice League, there are always injuries, health check-Ups, and illnesses that need healing.

But with the amount of Variant Biologies that those Heroes have, it's always a guessing game as to how to help them best. Some Metahumans react positively to penicillin, but others react like it's their Kryptonite. Some Aliens have anatomy similar to Humans, others are so different you can't tell the Stomach from the Bladder.

So when they hired a New Doctor for the Medical Bay, they had to run him through an entire Course on Variant Biologies and how best to treat specific Heroes. It was long and difficult to remember fully, but it was necessary for him to know.

But then the new Doctor started correcting Them.

"Actually, Martian's react better to the Syrup of Eucalyptus Plants better than Penicillin, since Eucalyptus is very similar to a medicinal plant from Mars which they used in many of their antibiotics."

"I don't think just pumping double doses of sedative is the best way to calm down a Speedster, that could have adverse effects on their body. Perhaps try Psychic Intervention? Their minds move a Mile a Second, but if you can calm them down their bodies will follow suit."

"Of course you use Micro-Doses of Kryptonite to operate on Superman! What else would you do?! I don't know, maybe ask JLD to enchant your Equipment to make use of Kryptonian suseptiblity to Magic? The Kryptonite is just gonna give him Cancer!"

Of course the Doctors didn't take kindly to being rudely corrected by a newbie, and Fired him on his first day.

Then a few days later their usual Treatments don't work, and they decide to give those strategies the Quack Doctor gave them out of desperation.

And Lo and Behold, they work! Martian Manhunter is fully healed and feels much better than the previous times he has needed surgery. Apparently they used a different Antibiotic that worked better with his Biology. Which was incredible, how had they figured it out?

Another Doctor you say? One who was experienced on Martian Biology and Medicinal History? He would very much like to meet with the man!

Sylus will be the best father a girl could ever ask for. His daughters will never lack for anything, least of all love, support, or affirmation. He is the type of dad who will sing for his children, join them in their games, bake cupcakes with them, hold them in his lap as he attentively listens to them blabber on, comfort them after a nightmare, happily dress up for imaginary tea parties, go to — and if necessary participate in — dance recitals, braid their hair, let them give him makeovers etc. He fosters and encourages individuality, independence, and confidence, but also always lets them know that it's ok to cry, to fail, to ask for help, to rely on others. He is validating and reassuring, never faltering in his emotional support. They can come to him about anything without fear of being rejected or judged. He is a shoulder to cry on, and a confidant always ready to listen and to give advice as needed. From the very day of their births and throughout the entirety of their lives, Sylus will ensure that his daughters will never have even a single reason to doubt that they are the most precious treasures in the Universe to him, and that his love for them is unconditional.

thanks for being one of the few mouthwashing artists who is like.. normal about jimmy, is the only way i can describe it. for treating his character just as seriously as all the other tulpar members, not being afraid to analyze/explore his character and relationships with the others; for not outright refusing to draw him etc. i feel like a lot of people think that including him in fanart/analysis is equal to excusing his actions and it really sucks to see that, so it's always refreshing to see someone give him as much thought and appreciation as any other well written character.

Thank you, but it makes me wonder how cooked this fandom is, if I'm getting praise for treating the central protagonist and main character of the story as just A Character In The Story. And he isn't even my favorite. I understand the aversion to Jimmy obviously, but a lot of people act so immature about him.

I know i’ve said it before. But this discourse about the ethics regarding taylor swift being a billionaire are so disingenuous. She doesn’t have a makeup line, clothing line, brand endorsements.

The bulk of her income is entirely from her own talent as a musician. She has not exploited anyone. She’s also not even close to being a cash billionaire when you look at the numbers it’s like half of that ( bc it’s hard to become a billionaire without shady shit) . Taylor is known to pay her employees well. By percentage what she gives away to charity and compensates her team with is unheard of. She gave 10% of her net worth away in bonuses to everyone who worked on her tour. That’s just what we know of.

I’m not even saying this as a fan, but you cannot look at someone like her and how she moves and compare that to other billionaires and oligarchs.

I’m all for wealthy people paying their fair share. I hate capitalism and the current system but I do think she’s a good example of doing the best to be ethical within the current system

Again on the dissonance between what Mizi says versus what she does... Mizi's relationship with her agency / autonomy is complicated and strained. She wanted to go to Anakt Garden for that sense of control and solidarity among humans and away from the aliens, but even then, she's punished for possessing her own autonomy (ie. Her encounter with "I'm Quite," who hit her for not reciprocating his feelings, because he felt wronged and entitled to her, like she's an object. In turn, this establishes how Mizi is punished for rejecting the education that the Aliens taught, which teaches her that her say-so is conditional and that there will always be a standard and expectation for her that she doesn't want to commit to--

but she's forced to conform either way, she never has a full grasp on that sense of control that she needs, with her dynamic with Sua, they are women, so as women they are seen the same way by the society they live in, in that way Mizi feels seen by an equal and a human like herself, in another way, Sua is like a mirror of what Mizi hates having to be, that's also why Sua's submissiveness is so gratifying to her sense of confidence and insecurities in the moment, above Sua her usual role is reversed, she can believe that she has the full control because of this power imbalance and Sua lets her have it. But something is interesting about Mizi's behavior. There's so much resentment and hurt built up within her. The moment she has the chance to become vulnerable and vent that frustration, she can't do it-- she doesn't do anything but hold Sua gently. That is how Mizi loves Sua, having the strength and say so to completely "crush" Sua, but chooses to hug her and cradle her fragile heart, Mizi's fragile god, whom she reveres and loves so much that, of course, with this much power, she couldn't destroy her, she'd worship Sua for the blessing of having this.
