Keep thinking about how our reaction to Al-An's reveal will forever be different to Robin's because we played through the aftermath.

We saw the result.

Not just of his decision to take the Sea Dragon's eggs – but the result of their testing on the Sea Emperor and her eggs.

Robin only has what Al-An told her, and, even then, Al-An didn't tell her everything. It wasn't like he gave a word-for-word recount of everything that happened. Robin never interacted with the Sea Emperor. Never interacted with that side of the planet.

She can't react in the same way – she can only console him ‐ because she doesn't know everything.

We do. (Well, we don't know everything, but we know things to a far greater extent.)

All I can think of is Avery Quinn's line once he is on route. "We didn't know."

Suffice to say he may or may not deserve a hug but I also have a need to punch him in the face.

You ever watched the We Bare Bears? Well the same way that bears get around by stacking on top one another and the same way that Carmen does her speech on top of Ayin and Benjamin in your drawing, the Ayinlings stack on top of one another to get around, stay safe and stay together.

Annnnnnnd because Adam wouldn't shut up about wanting to be on the very tippy top. That and depending on the condition of Abram and Abel, they needed to carry around a drunk Abram and a possibly injured Abel wherever they're going.

And since X is a smol baby bird bro (I have only known him for 5 minutes but I WILL DIE FOR HIM) compared to the others, Ayin has the responsibility of carrying the haphazard tower of kiwis on his back. Good thing he's gotten practice with Carmen and Benjamin and has never skipped leg day. Although his poor little kiwi legs are probably jelly now and his back is at risk of being jellified too.

the thing about the Doctor is that they exist on such a big scale that they can only lose. let me explain.

they travel, and they inevitably keep getting involved in big historical events or just situations where several people's lives are at stake. so of course they will see suffering and cause suffering, in one way or another. on a good day, innocent beings will still die because of them. that's just inevitable. no matter what they do, they can't avoid that. if they see something terrible happen and decide to do nothing, people will die. if they do decide to help, because of the gravity and complexity of the situation, there will often still be victims. if they decide to hide away from the world, there will still be a lot of suffering happening in the universe that they could easily prevent if they did intervene - so you could say it's still their fault. (and also, because of who they are and what they've done before, trouble will stilll find them anyway.)

so simply because of their travels combined with all their knowledge and abilities, they can't avoid to cause harm in some way. because of the sheer scale their life happens on. because if your opponents are gods or armies, you simply can't save everyone. if giants fight, then humans will get crushed.

and the thing about this is: the Doctor could just not care. they could think like a god, like the Master and many others, and decide a few lives don't matter. decide humans are ants even while still trying to help them. but no - the Doctor is just kind enough, or human enough, or good enough (call it whatever you want) to care. to see a child cry and feel sorry for it. to be affected by a single family's fate. although you could say they really shouldn't care - they always will.

so that's the tragedy of who they are. no matter what they try... whether they obey the rules of time or try to put themself above them as the Time Lord Victorious... whether they try not to interfere, or try to become a god and save everyone... there will always be suffering. they will always actively cause some of it. and they will always feel the pain.

they can never be good in the way that a simple human can. they're too big for that. all they can do is hold on to the pain, hold on to their empathy and hope, and keep trying.

I was bitching about being blind to my shrink today and I had to explain how I like. cope with garbage vision and function almost as well as someone who is sighted. (I have cataracts, one eye, and can't heal from surgery disease that makes removing the cataracts not worth it until they completely take out the good eye) specifically we discussed what goes into faking maintaining eye contact and managing to still be a good aim (good vision isn't what makes someone a good shot, the ability to get the gun/bow/ whatever pointed the way they want it to be is)

everything else is accomplished via shrimp posture and holding my phone/whatever I'm working on too close to my face.
