You and Bernard had never seen eye to eye that much was for certain. At every bit of confusion or conflict presented by the elves you both would only argue. It was a wonder that Santa, Scott Calvin, had continued to let you both hold the title of Head Elf. Seeing as how whenever you both were meant to handle a situation it ended in more disputes amongst the workers then any kind of resolution.

Yes, despite your shared circumstances, despite growing up through hundreds of years together, you just could never seem to understand the other. The only thing you seemed to agree on was ensuring the happiness of children around the world, and making sure your jobs were done well and properly.

Though even that wasn’t enough to stop your fighting. One year, you two had been quarreling about wrapping and what exactly was the proper way for the elves to wrap the presents. This argument came to be so out of hand that you fell behind schedule.

Half of the wrapping department was listening to you and the other half to him, and quite frankly it was slowing you all the way down. Cutting your production time by at least half if not more than. You had only made it to Christmas on schedule that year by the slimmest of margins and it was most certainly not easy. Which made you all the more uncertain of what your current situation would present for you.

It was an almost silent night amongst the North Pole as you walked with your Co-Head Elf, Bernard, the small bells on the two of your outfits ringing softly with every step. You were both doing your hardest to discuss and agree upon the best plan to amplify production. As to avoid any big arguments that may lead to another production and schedule delay.

As you walked you both came out onto a terrace of the pole, it was snowing in light flurries as you both stood. The fresh falling snow slowly catching onto your clothes and forming very light halos of delicate snowflakes in your hair.

Each of you were rapidly speaking, and slightly disagreeing, with the other. Which was the case for quite a while until Bernard had taken a step back and paused suddenly, his eyes fixated above you both.

“Bernard?” You called, only growing more and more confused as he continued to ignore you. Until finally you yourself looked up, following his line of sight until it came into view. A small bundle of mistletoe hung between the two of you. A quick realization washed over you as you quickly attempted to fix the situation at hand.

“I promise I told the Decoration Department that this was in the wrong place.” You assured, continuing to look up at the mistletoe that was hung between you and Bernard.

And you had, earlier that day when you had been passing by this exact terrace you stopped to watch them work. Usually your decoration department did a wonderful job, going above and beyond for the look of the pole.

However as you watched them you noticed them hanging the traditional plant up above the terrace, and you had asked them to take it down, bringing up a few reasons as to why it had been decided not to be placed in this area before. Eventually they agreed with you and told you they would remove the mistletoe, pleased with that answer you found it okay to walk away and get started on another job you had to complete.

The mistletoe’s leaves glittered with a slight bit of Christmas magic, magic that the decorators always dusted across the mistletoe within the pole before they were put up. You looked back to your Co-Head Elf with slight worried glances, getting ready to combat anything he had to say about it.

Though when his gaze finally met yours it seemed as though he wasn’t upset or bothered by the classic decoration, in fact he didn’t show any sign of distaste. It was strange at first before it dawned on you, perhaps as opposites you were, whilst you were upset with the placement he was not. Perhaps instead he would decide he liked it, even if only to start an argument with you.

As these thoughts danced in your head you watched a bit of the shimmering magic flutter down and land on you. It occurred to you now what this meant. How the plant dangled so perfectly between you two symbolized more than a mistake of your decorators.

You turned to meet Bernard’s gaze once again, he’d been oddly quiet, usually the two of you would result in much more commotion. His eyes were expectant though patient, observing you and your every move as he waited for you to finally realize what you both had quite literally walked right into.

You looked at him for a moment more before speaking up, “We don’t have to.” You gave, no one was around to hold you to this, and surely neither of you felt you were necessarily in a position where you must.

You watched as he stared at you for a moment more, his face scrunching slightly, he did that when he was thinking. Which was something you had learned about him but never admitted to, much like many of his other traits.

You heard him chuckle softly as he met your stare again, those eyes, you thought, they were always so full of life. Always shining with this sparkle that you couldn’t help but feel matched the spark of joy that the Christmas season brought. They certainly made you feel lighter, more joyful even, despite who they may belong to.

“Why would I not want to kiss you?” He finally spoke. He asked it as though it was more than obvious that’s what he’d been willing, no, wanting to do, as if it’s what he had been waiting so long for. It made you feel almost idiotic, foolish even.

You watched him take a small step towards you. Your bodies and faces mere inches from each other, you could smell him from here. He always smelt first like the fresh fire in his office, a light Smokey scent followed by those classical Christmas ones. Gingerbread specifically with a slight hint of sweet peppermint.

You held his gaze, his eyes roaming across your face, finding their way back to your lips time and time again. As his hands slowly found their way to your waist, he was warm, a comforting warm. The kind you feel when you come inside after a walk in the winter or bundled in a sweater as you decorated for Christmas.

And from your place before him you could see every silver freckle dusted on his cheeks. He looked almost angelic, you found yourself thinking with the snow sticking to him and the familiar light in his eyes.

“Can I kiss you?” He whispered softly, a question to be shared with you and you alone. His voice was almost desperate, though he wouldn’t make any move until he had absolute certainty from you.

Your breath became stuck in your throat, you paused, unsure of what move you should make before you unconsciously replied, “Yes.” You found yourself whispering, nodding softly as your own voice subconsciously matched his desperation.

In almost an instant your lips were against his, one of his hands coming to cradle the back of your neck, the soft ends of his sweater brushing against your cheek as he did so, with his other hand pulling you closer from his hold on your waist.

He tasted almost as sweet as he smelled, just like the new sugar cookies the bakery had been working on, and cinnamon, from his hot chocolate you found yourself remembering. He always had his cocoa with cinnamon.

He pulled away from you with a shaky sigh, a sweet smile spreading to his face as the sparkle in his eye shone brighter than you thought it had perhaps ever had before. His hold on you was still gentle but enough to keep you close, almost as though he never wished to let you go.

Looking at him now, taking notice of every detail about him, and the way he smiled at you, a sweet, loving smile that warmed you even more than his hold. It all made you feel more of a fool than before.

Has he always looked at you this way?

Has the sight of his smile always swooned you?

And have you just been so oblivious as to ignore it?

It had been foolish for sure, your attitudes towards one another, the arguments, and specifically waiting so long for this.

Thinking it all over you couldn’t help but breathe him in and pull him in once again, putting a silence to your thoughts as you kissed him once more.

The Georgian authorities presented new legislation in early February that critics say will increase pressure on the country’s civil society and independent media while also placing additional restrictions on public gatherings. The move comes amid a wave of anti-government protests that began following Georgia’s disputed October 2024 parliamentary elections and escalated weeks later when the government took steps to suspend the country’s EU accession efforts.

The current crisis reflects widespread tensions in Georgian society, with the governing Georgian Dream party accused of attempting to turn the country away from decades of Euro-Atlantic integration and return to the Russian orbit. Government officials deny the charges, claiming instead that they seek to guard against undue Western influence while avoiding any involvement in the geopolitical confrontation over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Georgian Dream officials announced in early February that the party planned to draft legislation that would tighten restrictions on foreign-funded media outlets and establish a new code of journalistic ethics to be monitored by a government body. Similar legislative initiatives are being prepared targeting Georgian civil society organizations. Opponents have likened these steps to the draconian measures introduced by the Putin regime over the past twenty-five years to silence domestic opposition inside Russia.

With anti-government protests still taking place in cities across Georgia on an almost daily basis, the authorities have also recently introduced new laws limiting public gatherings and criminalizing minor protest actions such as placing stickers on public property. Since protests flared in late 2024, hundreds have been detained, with many reporting human rights abuses while in custody including beatings and torture.

Critics say these latest steps serve as further confirmation of the Georgian government’s intention to establish a Kremlin-style authoritarian state. In early February, Transparency International Georgia executive director Eka Gigauri told the Associated Press that she believed the authorities were using the same tactics employed by the Putin regime against opponents. “There is nothing new in how they attack civic activists,” she said. “This was happening in Russia years ago.”

Similar sentiments have been expressed by international human rights watchdogs monitoring the current crisis. “The government is relentlessly taking the country into a repressive era that is uncharted for Georgia but all too familiar in authoritarian states,” commented Human Rights Watch Europe and Central Asia Director Hugh Williamson in January 2025.

In recent months, Georgia’s Western partners have become more vocal in their criticism of the country’s increasingly authoritarian policies and apparent turn toward Moscow. This Western response has included imposing sanctions against a number of Georgian officials including billionaire Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili, who is widely seen as the country’s de facto leader and architect of Georgia’s current pro-Kremlin policies. On February 13, the European Parliament adopted a resolution questioning the legitimacy of the current Georgian authorities and calling for fresh elections in the coming months monitored by international observers.

Meanwhile, relations with Russia continue to improve. Georgia has won favor in Moscow in recent years by refusing to participate in Western sanctions over the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Instead, Georgia has welcomed Russian businesses and has been accused of helping the Kremlin bypass international restrictions put in place in response to the war.

Members of the Georgian Dream party have positioned themselves as the only political force capable of establishing pragmatic relations with Russia. With around twenty percent of Georgia currently under Russian occupation, the threat of renewed Russian military aggression is a highly sensitive issue for Georgian society. In the run-up to Georgia’s October 2024 parliamentary election, Georgian Dream sparked controversy by using campaign posters contrasting peaceful Georgia with war-torn Ukraine as part of election messaging that sought to position the vote as a choice between war and peace.

With international attention now firmly fixed on developments in and around Ukraine, the political crisis in Georgia has slipped out of the headlines. However, this small nation in the southern Caucasus has a geopolitical significance that far outweighs its size. For the past two decades, Georgia has been widely seen in Western capitals as a post-Soviet success story, but the country’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations now hang in the balance. This represents a significant foreign policy challenge for the new Trump administration and for Europe.

Recent repressive measures indicate that the Georgian authorities are intent on escalating their clampdown against domestic opponents and strengthening ties with the Kremlin. If they succeed, it would represent a major victory for Vladimir Putin in the confrontation between the democratic world and an emerging alliance of authoritarian powers including Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.

Summary: You and Claudia have had different approaches to the Spanish national team while the dispute with the federation is still ongoing but one thing you can both agree on is that Vilda is an asshole.

This is actually worse than if you’d never even been called up to the preliminary squad.

Your first thought, once you’ve got past the initial crushing disappointment of finding out that you haven’t been included in Spain’s final squad, is that you’ve got to somehow find it within you to tell Claudia that you won’t be going to the World Cup after all.

It’s been the source of quite a few arguments between you and your girlfriend over the last few months. Claudia, resolute in her decision not to return to the national team until actual change has been made, accusing you of putting your own career over your integrity. You, plagued by injuries over the last few years that saw you miss out on an under-20 World Cup and last year’s European Championships, desperate to get to a tournament, this an opportunity to be your first senior one. 

The arguments haven’t had any lasting damage on your relationship, but it’s reached the point where you both actively avoid talking about the federation or the national team, just to save yourselves the hassle of another fight. You told Claudia when you were selected for the preliminary squad and left it at that, keeping emotion out of it, telling her more for the logistical purpose of informing her that you might be away for most of the summer than because you were expecting any kind of congratulations from her. As it turned out, she did congratulate you, though somewhat half-heartedly, and told you that she was happy for you. Happy, you noted, but not proud.

So that’s where you left it. Both aware of the situation, you wishing that Claudia was going with you and her wishing for you to stay at home in defiance with her, not that either of you vocalised that, in case of another argument.

But it was all for nothing. You’ve sacrificed your integrity, or so Claudia would say, and you’re not even getting the reward of a place at the World Cup.

You wish you understood why.

You played seventy-five minutes of the friendly against Panama and though it wasn’t your best game, it was still a solid performance. You bagged an assist and didn’t make any major blunders, so you rather naively hoped that you’d done enough to earn your place in the squad. 

It was a bit of a shock, therefore, when Vilda called you into his office this morning to tell you that you wouldn’t be travelling to New Zealand. All he told you was that there were other players who better fit into his plans for the World Cup. No apology, not even an explanation for why you don’t fit into his squad or what you need to work on in your game to have a better chance of selection next time.

He’s an asshole, you can practically hear Claudia’s voice ringing through your head.

She’s been telling you as much for months, never shy about voicing her distaste for the man nor the many reasons why he’s unfit to lead a women’s national team full stop, least of all one of Spain’s calibre, to a World Cup.

You don’t like him either - what he lacks in compassion, he more than makes up for in unsubstantiated ego and toxic masculinity - but you were willing to try to put that aside, to be courteous and professional if it means finally getting to represent your country at a major tournament.

Now you might hate him more than Claudia does.

At least Claudia will probably be relieved. You knew that she would cheer for you if you went to the World Cup - you personally, rather than the team - but she’ll surely be happier that she doesn’t have a need to pay attention to the tournament anymore now that you’re not going.

Once you’ve processed it yourself, you FaceTime Claudia to tell her the news. Maybe slightly sadistically, you want to see her face when she finds out that she was right.

“I didn’t make it,” you admit, though you’re sure that Claudia must have known already from seeing your red-rimmed eyes that you weren’t calling her with good news. “I’m not going to New Zealand. I’m not going to play in a World Cup.”

Claudia’s eyes close, her head falls forward as she processes your words. To your surprise, she looks genuinely confused and disappointed by the news. Part of you had been expecting her to react more outwardly with an outburst of 'I told you so', to use this as proof that she had been right about Vilda and the federation this whole time. 

But as divided as you’ve been in your approach to the issues with the federation and their running of the national team, you and Claudia are always going to be united in your support for each other.

“Shit, baby,” she says, opening her eyes. Her eyebrows are knit together in a frown, but there is sympathy in her eyes. “I’m sorry. I don’t know what to say. I know how much you wanted this.”

“It is what it is,” you say, trying to pass off your disappointment with a shrug, if only to ward off a fresh wave of tears from spilling down your cheeks. “Vilda doesn’t think I’m good enough.”

“Do you want me to fly over there and punch him?” Claudia asks, with more of the emotion you expected from her. “Because I will. Right in his stupid face.”

You picture it in your head, little angry Pina marching up to Vilda with his smug smile and sending him halfway to New Zealand herself with a single punch. Maybe it would finally knock some humility into him.

“Yes please.”

“He’s an idiot,” Claudia continues her impassioned rant. “I mean, we’ve always known that, but he’s particularly stupid not to take you to the World Cup. Did he at least tell you why?”

“No,” you answer. “Just that I didn’t fit in with his plans.”

“He can shove his stupid plans up his stupid ass,” Claudia rants.

“Claudia,” you warn her, because while you agree wholeheartedly with her sentiment, your girlfriend does have a habit of getting carried away in her passion sometimes.

“What?” Claudia protests, feigning innocence as if she hasn’t threatened violence multiple times in the last few minutes. “His plans are stupid if they don’t involve you. Sure, you don’t score many goals but you got nearly as many assists as me in the league this year in half as many games after you came back from your injury. Plus, you’re fast, you’re versatile, you’re good under pressure. You’re an asset to any team.”

“You’re biased,” you counter.

“I am,” Claudia agrees. “But anybody else would say the same.”

“Not anybody,” you point out.

“Anybody but that egomaniac. You’re passionate and you’re Catalan - that’s what scares him. It’s never been about whether you’re good enough on the pitch, it’s about who you are off it.”

“I think that’s worse than if I just wasn’t a good enough footballer,” you say with a grimace. “I can always work on my game, but I can’t change who I am.”

“And the people who matter will never ask you to change. I never want you to change. I know we haven’t always agreed on this situation, but you inspire me every day. I was stubborn and I’ll continue to stand by my own decision, but you wanted to change things from the inside. You had a dream to represent Spain at a World Cup and you did everything you could to try to achieve that, even if it meant telling me to fuck off, which isn’t always an easy thing to do. I admire you for that.”

You smile at Claudia’s admission that she’s not the easiest person to come up against, something which you know all too well from the fights you’ve had during the course of your relationship.

“Now we can both tell him to fuck off.”

“I like that plan,” Claudia grins at you. “Now I can either make a voodoo doll of Vilda and we can set fire to it together when you get home, or I can start to look at vacations for just the two of us so we can forget about him and the World Cup completely.”

Claudia seems to know exactly what to say to make you feel slightly less shit. In your disappointment and heartbreak, you hadn’t considered that there is at least one benefit to not going to the World Cup - that you now get a proper summer break to enjoy with your girlfriend before pre-season starts.

“Remember when we talked about going to Greece?” you remind Claudia. 

“To Rhodes? I’ll look into it,” Claudia promises you immediately. “And I really am sorry you didn’t get your dream this time. It’ll happen one day, I promise. And I’ll be right there to support you, even if I’m still not on the team with you.”

“I love you Claudia,” you blurt out.

Her eyes soften in adoration as her lips curl upwards into a smile.

“I love you too.”

New Year's Eve has always been a significant day, closing the old and opening a new cycle of life. Our ancestors approached it with great reverence and a rich variety of customs, which were supposed to ensure health, happiness and abundance for the coming year.

Preparations and Rituals

Preparations for the celebration began several days in advance. Housewives cleaned the house, as it was believed that one should not enter the new year in a mess - a messy house brought bad luck. Emesis Blue Soldier’s Nightmare

So I’ve theorized that Emesis Blue was a shared nightmare, but I’ve neglected to talk about poor Solly in detail until now. I’ve mentioned what I think his nightmare was about, but not with evidence and important details.

TW: Angst, death, Soldier’s hypothetical trauma. [War is Hell for a reason]

So here’s what I think Soldier was afraid of, and why.

#1: Bad leadership

Unlike our boy RED Soldier, who was never allowed to join the military, BLU served in WWII. He’s an actual veteran that served in the army, not the Navy.

The American army that stormed Omaha beach had to make their way across Europe, and trench warfare was employed.

So we know Solly wasn’t lying/implanted with a false memory about military service.

That being said, a soldier is right to be afraid of bad leadership. If you have someone who cares more about the end goal than the men under him, or is too incompetent to come up with a good strategy, soldiers die. More than needed to, and the worst is when the leader is convinced he’s smarter than the people who have to follow his command.

He got chewed out in the sewer via grown man tantrum and blamed for literally everything that went wrong to that point. Even though Spy is arguably the one at fault for 85% of the bad plays.

And every time Solly does something really competent, that should show Spy that he’s a valuable, loyal teammate? It doesn’t matter. It falls on deaf ears and he’s still considered stupid, useless, and cowardly.

It never mattered how well Soldier did, Spy wasn’t going to respect it. And you never want a person like that leading other people to their deaths.

That being said, if Spy is afraid of becoming the worst version of himself like I theorize, then that would mean he was left open to serving the role of bad leader in Solly’s nightmare. They amplified each others fears and didn’t know it.

#2: America was never “the good guy”

The Tf2 comic takes place in 1972, and I place the shared nightmare after the unknown resolution to the 7th issue. That means the Vietnam war is still going on and being televised.

WWII was an anomaly of a war: there was a clear good side and bad side. In a lot of conflicts, both sides do terrible things at a pretty much equal rate, and the whole thing started over power or land disputes. WWII Germany was an anomaly in that it was clearly an evil power, and everyone could root for the other side.

And then it was followed up by the Cold War, and smaller proxy wars like Vietnam. It was televised, and the people of the USA saw in real time that the government was lying to them, that they weren’t “the good guys”. The grisly footage did not add up with the lies spread by the US government. The American soldiers of that war returned defeated and hated by their own civilian population.

It’s three years before the end of the war. BLU Scout may well have joined the mercenary team to avoid service in Vietnam instead of going to Canada.

Maybe Soldier didn’t feel ready to hang up his helmet, and wanted to at least know what he was getting himself into. BLU and RED don’t pretend to be fighting for a good cause, you get money for fighting some other guys so you can respawn and do it all over again.

It’s better to use a rocket launcher on a random RED merc who’ll be alive in an hour than to do what the American army was commanded to do in Vietnam. To civilians. Which was then televised and wised up the public about the truth. To this day, Americans don’t trust the government like they did pre-Cold War. You’re telling me Soldier wasn’t one of them?

Solly is a WWII veteran. He’s pretty likely to try to keep up with what’s happening in the Cold War. Watching that footage made him doubt that America was ever “the good guy”. That he and his fallen friends were ever really heroes.

This other soldier could be one of the fallen WWII friends from Doe’s Platoon, but I thought of another possibility. He’s a German soldier that our guy killed, wearing the American uniform. Because that death would be permanent, and if America was never really good, they’d have a lot more in common than Solly used to think.

Either explanation would explain why Jane keeps freezing up every time he sees the guy. But the fact that he befriended an enemy Demoman and the elongated Scout situation could both give credit to the German theory.

Demoman represented the fact that sometimes the enemy is not really an enemy, and you could have been friends under different circumstances. Elongated Scout represented the fact that war is kill or be killed, and sometimes you have to trade an enemy’s life for your own. Even if you really don’t want to. Everything was warped and staticky when the Elongated Scout was alive and chasing Soldier, and went clear again the second he was gone.

He also died twice to head wounds. The other soldier in American uniform had empty bleeding eye sockets. Soldier might have shot the German in both of his eyes during the war, and now he can’t forget the man’s face. Because at the end of the day, that guy was still a person, and they might have even gotten along if they’d been on the same side. [An actual story from a WWII veteran along the same lines of what I think Em Blue Soldier is dealing with]

#3: Russian Red Army

Stalingrad coming back over and over, scarier and colder each time could be the manifestation of Soldier’s feelings about Russians. In WWII, they were allies and in the Cold War both countries were using bloody proxy wars to try and avoid the nuclear option. But the Red army was brutal, and Soldier would know that from his time on the warfront.

The Germans tried to push their way into Russia to conquer it, committing unspeakable crimes on the way. The Red army pushed back and committed revenge crimes on their way to take Berlin. You can see why an American would be scared of what Russians are capable of.

That’s why by the end of the movie, Stalingrad is burnt and still trying to get revenge on Soldier. RED Heavy is anti-communist, but we have no idea what BLU Heavy believes. If he is a pro-Russia Communist, it would explain why Spy and Soldier planted him as a traitor in the early scenes of Emesis.

I think Soldier knowing firsthand how the Russian troops act would explain why he distrusts them while still questioning America’s honor. He got to see more of them because they weren’t shooting at each other during his war, unlike the German soldiers he had to kill. I think he also knows why America was the country that German POWs wanted to be sent to, and Russia was the absolute worst option for them.
