The Rookie – S.O.S (Save Our Show)

Season 7 Is A Fans' Favorite, but It Might Be Not Enough.

A. What The Show Has Done Right

A lot of fans L❤️VE Season 7 of The Rookie for a lot of reasons:

Fans' favorite ship, Chenford, is significantly progressed: Tim got jealous, they hooked up, and Tim confessed his love to Lucy again.

Although we missed Aaron Thorsen, his replacement, Miles Penn, won our hearts with his sincerity and sympathetic attitude.

We got a cute jealous Wesley storyline.

Wopez and Jayla seamlessly blend into each other's family life. Nyla has known that Det. Rick Graham had a crush on Angela before Wesley found out. James opened Wopez' front door without help (he might have a key!), and dropped Leah before going to work.

We got Tim and Nolan bro moments twice (in the locker room and the safe house)

We got a new eye candy: the Mickey! 😂

We even got a little backstory for Smitty (Smitty has married at least 3 times, and he might have children! 🤯)

To sum it up, Season 7 won the fans over by giving a lot of fan service and portraying dynamic relationships across the main characters. Everyone could interact with everyone, simply by Grey changing their work partner. Having Wesley assigned to Mid-Wilshire Police Station and James working as the community representative also add more possibilities to combine any of the main characters in writing a storyline.

Alexi Hawley, the showrunner, did a really great job in the characters' dynamics and developments. The main characters interact like a team, a found family, without being advertised as such (looking at you, 9-1-1 👀). Everyone got their own story and development. Some are more prominent than the others, but no one is stuck in limbo, or trapped in a hamster wheel of repetitive storylines.

Another strong point of the show is the casting. All of the main cast members are giving solid performances. The show didn't spend its budget on big name stars, then had to cast less-skilled young actors to fill the remaining roles as the consequence (looking at you 9-1-1: Lone Star 👀). Even some of the lesser-known cast members like Melissa O'Neil, Eric Winters, Mekia Cox, and Alyssa Diaz, are unexpectedly impressive. Also, kudos to Nathan Fillion for sharing the spotlight with the younger actors, a move which help the show attracts much broader audience.

B. It Might Be Not Enough

Despite all of these positive points, the rating and viewership of the Rookie tend to decline. Episode 7x06 "The Gala", another fans' favorite which gave them a Chenford hook up, has one of the lowest ratings (0.24) and one of the lowest viewership numbers (2.771 millions) in the season. Episode 7x08 "Wildfire", which gave Chenford's love confession, fares a bit better with 0.25 rating and 3.121 millions viewers, but it is still below average.

Compared to its competitors in the same time slot, the rating of ep. 7x08 "Wildfire" is at the bottom, behind 'FBI: International', 'Doc', and 'Deal or No Deal Island'. If you look at the previous ratings of Season 7, the Rookie used to be #1 or #2 behind the FBI series.

Among other ABC shows, the average rating of the Rookie this season is also worrying. It's only second from the bottom, slightly better than Grey's Anatomy, a former juggernaut which people say has run its course.

C. What Needs To Be Done

What's wrong with the Rookie? Some fans, including me, think that this season is still lacking of good cases. After all, The Rookie is a police procedural show. It wouldn't survive solely on interpersonal drama and romance. The show NEEDS to have GOOD PROCEDURAL STORIES.

The Rookie has all what it needs to tell good procedural cases. It has done so in the past. Not only the show has a solid team of protagonists, it also has an impressive rooster of villains who are still alive, akin to the DC Batman. There are Elijah Stone, Aldo Salonga, Oscar Hutchinson, Monica Stevens, and now Liam Glasser. It would be exciting to watch something like their Guatemala Adventure again. Even smaller stories with heartfelt scenes like the Southern Front Case, or stories with good plot twists like the Nick Armstrong Case, might return viewers' interest on the show again.

It would help if fans send feedback to ABC about the improvement they want to see. The Rookie still has half a season to correct its course. In other shows, fans gave feedback only after the discontinuity of their beloved show was announced. By then, it might be too late. Actors might have been booked for another job (like Raphael Silva, who had been booked for 'The Waterfront' BEFORE his current show, 9-1-1: Lone Star, ended), or a replacement show has been signed by the network.

My song inspiration is Afterimage, my favorite from Hyperdrama, featuring Rimon! Inspired by ‘the red string of fate’ where one is destined to meet the other regardless of place, time, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.

I also contributed two smaller drawings, inspired by ‘Heavy Metal’ and ‘ Love S.O.S.’.

"Wilke used the various mediums of photography, performance, sculpture, and video to examine and challenge prevailing notions of femininity, feminism, and sexuality. She was one of the first artists to use vaginal imagery in her work with the purpose of directly engaging with feminist issues. Wilkes latex work reminds me of folded crepes. Perhaps red, mouldy crepes folded in various bodily forms would be interesting?

Doc (SCP OC who lives in my head rent-free), Newt (1/3 of the terrible trio of Ben 10 OCs I have for reasons (I don’t know why I drew him shirtless)), Aquila (light-side Sith warrior OC), and Scranton (one of my several Adventurer’s League characters, half-elf (Drow ancestry) Shadow Sorcerer/Hexblade Warlock who dug himself out of his own grave and looks like he could kill you but is actually a giant nerd for Phantomball and knitted hats).

Alrighty, it has taken me ages to get around to finishing all of this, because of unfortunately unavoidable things, but I am done with the semester now and so ready to spew all of my thoughts on the unsuspecting audience of poor people who follow me.

So, without further ado, I present:

Sophie's Unhinged and Excessively Hyperactive Word-Vomit "Review" of Chapter 11 of S.O.S.

Ooooh, Curtain’s evil villain motivations for tipping the boys off balance is so sinister. It’s interesting, because he is using the same tactics he used on/around Nicholas when they were children. Just. The narrative parallels.

Garrison!!

She’s so funny. Even with all she’s been through, she sees right through Curtain to his theater kid core.

(It’s still really sad, though, because she doesn’t get why he’s trying to get her opinion and he keeps forcing her)

“For someone who was fine bypassing ethical standards to rush their timeline, Curtain still put a ridiculous amount of effort into aesthetics. Not that any of this would matter if his new messengers didn’t adapt to The Whisperer.” It just hits so hard, for some reason. Maybe because you can really understand the difference of perspective between her and Curtain.

Oh!! “psychics or telepaths”, we’re getting somewhere!

It makes a lot of sense that the Whisperer tech would pick that kind of thing up!! That’s so clever, and very much something Garrison would take into account. You are so good at putting these little details into it that give the story so much more dimension and open up a lot more paths for the characters to take.

Lindsey!!! Lindsey gets a part and can do things!! I’m so excited for her :) 

Aaaaand she’s got a crush on Isaac. I can’t believe you’ve gotten me extremely invested in this as soon as I got to that line. She’s so sweet, though! I’m excited to see more of her.

And you can tell Garrison is trying to be nice, even though she’s having a breakdown fifty percent of the time and doesn’t really want to deal with teenagers.

It cracks me up that they made a full model of Reynie. Why. Just, why. Did he leave some of his clothes behind? I feel like it would have been better to make one of Kate. You can’t tell me they looked at Madge and went “Yes. I am certain that Reynie, our resident soft-hearted child who’d probably cry if he saw this bird eat a live mouse, he is the one who will be most in-tune with this child. Not Kate, no. There’s no way that the girl who was raised by a circus would be the one who will volunteer to handle the actual falcon we’re about to send to them”

I’m so proud of Number Two for breaking Madge out of a terrible zoo. 10/10 No Comments, one of the best plot points I’ve seen.

Also, this Madge perspective is so cool! Omniscient narrators don’t always remember that they can do anything, but this was a fantastic usage of it.

She’s trying so hard. Madge has made no mistakes ever she’s beautiful.

MISS PERUMAL YEAH

““Oh, Hello.” replied Nicholas awkwardly, hoping that this woman, who clearly cared about Reynie, wouldn’t notice the newly destroyed dummy that happened to be wearing one of his sweater vests.” Ajasdjgadskjl What even. He’s so silly, but that is certainly not a situation you want to be in with Miss Perumal.

I’ve said it before, but the little descriptions and dialogue tags you add to the lines from the show are so good!!! Just tiny things, like calling her “the woman” and then immediately switching to “Dipika” when she introduces herself make it so incredibly amazing. You don’t have to worry at all about it being “boring” or “redundant” because people have already seen the show.

And now we’re sad again because of Milligan. I love him but he is so full of melancholy right now :( 

I love how you’ve been incorporating Mr. Benedict’s tendency to just adopt every single child into Curtain’s character. He may not be going about it properly, or for the right reasons, but he’s just as inclined to take in (abduct) children as his brother.

Isaac cameo!!

The details in how you explain all of the tech, from the Whisperer to the Waiting Room, is ingenious and thrilling to read and I am loving it!!

It just repeats people’s thoughts!! It’s not really like an AI, more of an echo chamber that can project into people’s minds, that is so neat!

Of course, Reynie is able to distance himself by thinking about Miss Perumal, that is such a good paragraph.

And the Curtain/Nicholas parallels are back again!! He’s such a contradiction; He misses his brother and wants him back, but he also can’t stand when things remind him of Nicholas. Oh boy this man needs so much therapy goodness gracious.

Good job, Reynie for being cautious!!

Oh. Oh no this is one of my least favourite bits it’s just so awkward aaahhhhhhh

“The first thing Number Two had done was quickly search Miss. Perumal’s bags for weapons, which was fine with Dipika, since she knew that Number Two wouldn’t find anything (no one ever did).” This is why she’s one of the best characters ever. I did really like the book version, of course, but I also love the way they changed her into Pink Biker Vigilante Mom.

AAAHHHH YOUR WAY OF DESCRIBING HER THOUGHTS IS SO COOL. “Dipika Perumal had met people who wanted to hurt children. She had met people who hated children, who even enjoyed hurting them. She knew what that looked like in a person, you could see it in their faces. And she could see that Mr. Benedict and his companions were not those people. But just because they didn’t enjoy hurting children didn’t mean they wouldn’t use them, and it didn’t mean they weren’t up to anything nefarious.” YES. OH MY WORD SO GOOD.

Also Mr. Benedict being like “Yes, if I tell this lady that my recently discovered twin brother is behind all of this, it will definitely give me credibility. This is the best option”

There’s something about Number Two fixating on the food as a way to enter the conversation/be sure that if something goes wrong she’ll be there that rings very true to me. She anxious about this, and she wants to protect Mr. Benedict and exert some kind of control because she couldn’t keep the house from being broken into and now they’re in the woods and she can’t keep Rhonda from wanting to quit and she couldn’t keep Miss Perumal from finding them and the only thing she can control right now is the stuff she makes with her own hands and she’s scared that she’s falling behind because of all her failures and you can feel that she just needs to do something. You do a good job of portraying that.

CAN YOU PLEASE STOP MAKING ME CRY OVER THESE CHARACTERS????? FOR FIVE SECONDS???? OH MY WORD

And poor Sticky is ashamed of admitting that he’s afraid of not being wanted, like he thinks he isn’t even worth being upset about how he’s been treated.

It’s been kind of intriguing to see Curtain’s feelings about Reynie and Sticky slowly switch.

And now we’re back to Mr. Benedict’s questionable attempts to explain himself. Why on earth would she need background for the information you just dropped on her about your brother? That certainly wasn’t something to be expected.

AKJFshad;asdfg Number Two just casually going “He’s narcoleptic, it’s fine. Please continue to enjoy your food” and the way you write Miss Perumal’s reaction!! She’s so baffled but she adapts, as she does.

Oh goodness, she thinks he’s crazy. I feel so bad for him because he’s had such awful experiences with that, but also from her perspective it’s totally justified.

I love how she initially was trying to be nice and not trigger him but immediately forgoes this to yell at him about sending children into an underground secret tunnel.

She knows!! She sees the button and that whole paragraph looking into how she feels about the situation and how she fought Curtain to avoid brainsweeping the children is bone-chilling I don’t know how you managed to make us feel that way when I know what’s going to happen it’s nuts how good at this you are.

Their decaying dynamic is driving me up a wall. She doesn’t get why Curtain cares about her, but she’s using it to her advantage, all the while Curtain’s still manipulating her, but he’s trying to do it in the least malicious way possible. (And he’s failing)

Garrison’s little dive into Curtain’s weird delusions is very interesting. He really is unsettling, because he isn’t some mastermind who spends all his time distracting people from his real intentions, he’s spending just as much time trying to convince himself of what he’s telling others that he can’t see clearly anymore.

I really appreciate how you give Miss Perumal her own opinions and personality, but you keep her thoughts directed at Reynie. That’s a tough balance.

The narrative tension in the details of how Dipika leaves thinking that Mr. B and Co aren’t intentionally hurting people, but should be stopped nonetheless, and she doesn’t see how badly she’s shaken him is so good!!

Next up while I cover the history of Looney Tunes on home video, While in America, the two compilation films, 1001 Rabbit Tales and Fantastic Island were released. The Looney Tunes Video Show was expanded in the United Kingdom as Volumes 8 through 13 were released in January 1984. And making their video debut in this market are a combination of some of the most popular and some rare findings of Warner Bros. Post-1948 cartoon catalog.

And expanded from 7 cartoons, each tape contains 10 cartoons. And they are only mastered in PAL format, which has a higher resolution than the NTSC 480 format. However, cartoons mastered in PAL are technically sped up by 4 percent resulting the audio to be pitched up almost one semitone. That’s normal for most international markets but not for US, Canada, and Japan markets.

Variety still plays a huge part. The cartoons still have the same low quality transfers. Telecine scan from 35mm prints onto 1-inch videotape.

A majority of this Vol. 16 is filled with Bugs Bunny shorts, Foghorn got two, and Road Runner & Coyote got two. Nonetheless, the bonus cartoons are a nice surprise, and the presentation does present some variety based on the premises. This is still a good tape compilation.

Despite the last cartoon finishing this series off on a wimper (the musician's strike of 1958 forced Termite Terrace to use stock music), four Tweety and Sylvester cartoons, this tape is alright. Vol. 19 is definitely a worthy extension if you in search for some rare oddities.

This concludes The Looney Tunes Video Show. Excellent front cover work by the artists. Warner Home Video's UK division gave us more cartoons than what was seen in America at the time. The UK did not have The Bugs Bunny Road Runner Show or syndicated program plots. Some of these shorts are seen once a day on BBC.

Bass had been trying to get himself the confidence to go ask Doc about that first session. Something today in him was nagging at him. A old piece of him was yelling at him for being in a slump in the first place. What happened to the Bass that didn't let anything drag him down? He needed him back. He was standing in front of Shaska's lab door and thinking if he should really knock or walk away for another week.

It was a personal work day.

The lab was full of sections of Shaska’s armor, her arm peices layed out, as well as the leg armor. Leaving her in the rest of it still there and the body suit. Doing real time updates and adjustments while half connected, so she could truly feel part of it, understand the way it would shift the feeling of how all her other parts would pull upon and flow together. The experimental copy ability was still a bit rocky, and limited, but at least it wasn’t breaking down. Hm... Her sensors had been updated with further recognition, able to track Robot Masters in her helmet for miles if needed, and this also meant they could do the same for her if an S.O.S went out, that was suggested by Elec, and she’d figured it was wise in case they needed it.

Said capability gave a brief blip through the helmet, making Shaska look at it, then towards one of her closed lab doors. She leaned back, spoke in a different language, Atlantian, and commanded the doors to open- Only to be surprised seeing who was there.

“Oh! Bass? Hey there, come in, join me.”

Dark anon here. Doc and Joe didn't ask his reasoning when rescuing their S.O.s from Hels, though Joe might have wondered later, but EX and Mrs. Hels didn't cause it. Hels is just shit with emotions.

Hels is valid but maybe next time don’t kidnap people and ask them to beat you up. Have some Soothing Drink instead.
