Contra (1/1) The story of how I found contra dancing is one of the better ones I have. I told it a few times last night so I’ll share it again here. About a year ago I was at an inflection point in my life where I needed to make a series of important decisions. I was in a strained relationship, I was nearing the end of my residency at the Zen Center of Syracuse, I was on poor terms with my family, and I was told by my employer that my team of five people would be cut to two, and I would have to reapply for my job. Under the stress of these circumstances, I was also very unhealthy. I couldn’t sleep and had no appetite. I was probably fifteen pounds less than what I weigh now. When I look at the few pictures I have from that time, I see a hollow, cadaverous version of myself. Worse of all, I knew that some these conditions were brought because of my own inability to speak the truth when I needed to. Over time, small issues that could have been addressed in the moment had accumulated into tangled knots that I couldn’t untie. I decided - was advised - to take a weekend away by myself. I looked for AirBnB places anywhere within an hour, somewhere I could just sit, write, and sort my thoughts out for a couple days. But nothing promising came up in my search. The choices available were either too expensive or provided only a bedroom and a shared living space with no real privacy. However, one place kept coming up as perhaps not perfect, but certainly plausible.  Karenville. Kareville is a colony of tiny homes in Ithaca, NY. It has no heat, no hot water, no plumbing, and no electricity. It does, however, have peacocks, goats, chickens, hedgehogs, and a nice view over a valley. My intuition told me, if you want a place to sit on your laptop and think, go somewhere else. If you want something unprecedented, go to Karenville. So I went. As part of my studies I had an option to take a few art classes, even though it wasn’t my major. So I jumped on the opportunity and took some, more for my soul and fun than anything else. During one specific course, we learned about many different styles, methods and materials. It was an amazing and cultivating course. But out of all the styles, materials and artists we’ve learned, no one captivated me quite like Edward Gorey. If you’ve seen the previous drawings I’ve uploaded, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. I’ve fallen in love with his style and tried to make it my own with my interpretation. It’s not the most complex or unique method I’ve learned, but that also may be exactly why I love it so much. the first. by @andiwriteordie (one of my FAVOURITE authors on ao3 currently) contains a series of firsts in mike&will's friendship, including the first time will EVER lies to mike - aka, the van monologue.

the let will byers be happy series by drawingandwriting currently contains 2 works and has more yet to come. takes place abt a week after volume 2 - mike learns that el didn't commission the painting from will, and confronts him about it.
