I'm sooo glad to find an envi sci studyblr!!! It feels like it's so rare.
yess!! there are like none of us out here! possibly it has to do with the venn diagram of tumblr users and people who go outside being separate circus tents, but that said, I'll list some cool people I follow if you want more env sci on your dash.
i was in parasocials with mallaidh-ann when he was working with seals and now he's doing salmon fishery work? swoon
headspace-hotel does environmental rage like no one else and also insanely good poetry
@hellsitegenetics is new and very funny
MC does fantastic work with @reasonsforhope to promote good environmental and human rights stories
@memecology makes me laugh, though they've been afk for a bit
@deadnaturalhistories is a natural history PhD candidate
@ecologie-txt is an ecology PhD candidate
@botanyshitposts is what is says on the tin (also, very smart)
@fatehbaz does anticolonial ecology 👌🏼
@weird-ecologies does wildlife conservation and scicomm
I really liked my friend's blog eco-filth but I think our upcoming master's thesis ate them...
mutuals with @endless-forms who's a science journalist
@wilder-thyme does archaebotany (wow!)
@moon-thestars is/was a biodiv conservation student, may be afk
nollectquest posts some foraging/homesteading content that I really enjoy
gallusrostromegalus likewise has an excellent #The Garden At The End Of The Universe tag
wild-west-wind is a park ranger
I've tagged those who are studyblrs and simply linked to those who are more personal blogs so as not to bother them too much. The best advice (imo) for finding envsci people on this hellsite is to hover around the solarpunk/tolkien/hozier/gardening/trc/justice tags and reblog-hop until you find somebody cool.
Feel free to add recs or nominate your own blog if you fall into any kind of botany, environmental science, zoology, conservation gig! Love to extend the circle!

Prof is having us do tree ID as part of our forest survey tomorrow. In February? I can tell *some* bark apart but I really don't know what she thinks we'll be able to accomplish

friendly reminder that the US is an empire. when the US justifies something as "self-defense", it is very often (almost always, actually) defending its imperial interests and the stability of its global economic power, not the safety of the people living within the boundaries of the country itself. most of its military actions are very easy to understand when viewed through this lens.
this is not a good thing, for anyone who was wondering
#cloudtalk#politics#envsci#(yes this is environmental science. the environmental cost of maintaining this military is obscene)

The Iowa DNR is having a public teleconference meeting on April 11 at 9:30 AM (CST. That's 10:30 AM EST, 8:30 AM MST, 7:30 AM PST)
I don't know what it can do, but I think it would be beneficial for as many people as possible to join this meeting and let it be known that people know about this and need it to change. Right now, all the news are about the basketball championship. That's all anyone hears about, cares about, is talking about. Let them know that people are paying attention. There are people who work in the DNR that care. Maybe they can tell us next steps.
Hey guys, I know there are a lot of really severe tragedies in the world right now and I in no way desire to push those aside, nor do I really want to load another thing onto people's plates, but anyone here in the US needs to be aware that on March 11, 2024, an agricultural company known as NEW Cooperative spilled 265,000 gallons (1500 tons) of liquid nitrogen into the East Nishnabotna River. This is the ecological equivalent of dropping a nuclear weapon into the river. Over a 60 mile stretch downstream of the spill its been a near total ecological wipeout for the river. So far, an estimate of 850,000 fish have been killed from this spill, and that's to say nothing for the insects, amphibians, reptiles and birds that relied on or lived in this river. It is literally filled with animal corpses. This river flows into the Missouri River and the impacts will likely continue to spread far past this 60 mile stretch. And this disaster has barely made local tv in Iowa, let alone national tv, despite the fact that 60 miles of river ecosystem were just wiped out in a way that may be impossible to recover from. And what's the punishment for this heinous act of destruction through negligence, you might ask? As it stands, its looking like a 6k fine from the DNR to the company. Not 600k. Not 60k. 6000 dollars. The maximum fine that the DNR can charge in Iowa is 10k unless they decide to take it further in court. That's why these spills are so frequent in Iowa: it's literally cheaper to eat the fines than it is to bother properly storing fertilizer. I don't know exactly what the proper course of action is here, or who needs to be contacted to enact change--I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in with that information--but at the very least, every one of us should know. Every one of us should make sure we don't forget this. And every one of us should blacklist NEW Cooperative fertilizer unilaterally.

Oh hey environment, hurrah! Hope you enjoy it. Even in the management/environmental sciences sides it is a very messy & interesting space to be in politically
ok so i quit my MBA and switched to an MS in environmental policy, and there is like. a substantial reduction in the number of people using chatgpt lmao. in the MBA program, there would be entire strings of discussion posts in unusual fonts with the tell-tale bold headings over each topic for emphasis (ARE YOU SERIOUS?). in these ENV courses i'm seeing people with genuine, not-strictly-correct grammatical quirks, there's no bold headings, nobody's using non-default fonts, things feel natural and peer-to-peer...man i hate business majors lol.
#anyways time for an immediate tangent into ai use in my university's envsci program#one of my most recent classes had a problem where like 30% of students were caught using AI to code#like it was functional but so samey and unnecessarily complex that it was obviously AI#Everybody ended up having to code a new model from scratch because of it and it was brutal even for the people who didn't use ai#Which is a shame. It was the only course in which we were actually being taught how to code#Other than that it's been pretty nice. The program is full of people that care deeply

as someone whose future career is with the government and education, I'm thinking it might be time for me to just build myself a frigate and sail into the open seas until i inevitably am killed in an epic duel with a kraken that unfortunately no one else will witness, but local islanders will say they heard some guy screaming pathetically the other night but that could have been anyone.

physically restraining myself from going on a massive tangent about ecosystems and food webs in my bloodborne fic
#just envsci major moments :pensive:#bloodborne#i knowwwwww the game's world isn't supposed to make physical sense but like. the relationships between different trophic levels is just.#like at each level from producers -> consumers -> consumers there's a reduction in biomass and a simultaneous accumulation of pollutants#which the body is not capable of purging. your biomass is not equal to the sum of the biomass you consume because a lot is burned for energ#however because your body isn't capable of getting rid of certain pollutants you retain all the pollutants from the biomass you consume#thus the concentration of pollutants increases with each trophic level. thinking about that in relation to. for example.#blood of ebrietas -> blood of yharnamites -> blood of hunters -> blood of vileblood hunters -> annalise#maybe that's why her blood is so corrupted. because of the accumulation of pollutants. ANYWAY.#cloudtalk
