Ethernet cable vs network cable - what are the differences?
When setting up a network, whether it's for your home or office, one of the key components you'll need is cables to connect your devices. Two common types of cables used in networking are Ethernet cables and network cables. While these terms are often used interchangeably, there are differences between them. Here, we will explore the distinctions between Ethernet cables and network cables, and provide insights into choosing the best option for your networking needs.
1. Ethernet Cables:
Ethernet cables are a specific type of network cable that is commonly used to connect devices within a local area network (LAN). These cables typically have an RJ45 connector at each end, which is designed to plug into Ethernet ports on computers, routers, switches, and other network devices. Ethernet cables are used to transmit data using the Ethernet protocol, which defines standards for communication and data transfer within a network.
2. Network Cables:
Network cables, on the other hand, refer to a broader category of cables used for networking purposes. While Ethernet cables are a type of network cable, not all network cables are Ethernet cables. Network cables encompass a variety of cable types and standards, including Ethernet, coaxial, and fiber optic cables. These cables may be used for different networking technologies and applications, such as connecting devices to the internet, linking network switches, or connecting devices to a server.
3. Differences Between Ethernet Cables and Network Cables:
The main differences between Ethernet cables and network cables lie in their specific applications and standards:
- Ethernet cables adhere to the Ethernet standard, which specifies protocols and hardware requirements for Ethernet networking. These cables are typically used for local area networks (LANs) and follow standards such as Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6a for data transmission.
- Network cables encompass a broader range of cable types and standards, including Ethernet, coaxial, and fiber optic cables. While Ethernet cables are a subset of network cables, other types of network cables may be used for different networking technologies and applications.
4. Choosing the Best Option:
When selecting cables for your networking setup, consider the following factors:
- Speed and Bandwidth: Ethernet cables support different speeds and bandwidths, with newer standards offering higher performance. Choose a cable that meets your network's speed requirements, such as Cat6 or Cat6a for gigabit or 10-gigabit Ethernet.
- Distance: Consider the distance between network devices when choosing cables, as different cable types have limitations on maximum transmission distances.
- Application: Determine the specific application and requirements of your network, such as data transfer speed, reliability, and environmental factors, to select the most appropriate cable type.
- Compatibility: Ensure that the cables you choose are compatible with your network devices, including computers, routers, switches, and other equipment.
Ethernet cables and network cables are essential components of networking infrastructure, enabling data transmission and connectivity within local and wide area networks. While Ethernet cables are a specific type of network cable used for Ethernet networking, network cables encompass a broader range of cable types and standards. Understanding the differences between Ethernet cables and network cables can help you make informed decisions when setting up your network and choosing the best cables for your needs. so I know the remote for my Apple TV (and proper tv) is here somewhere. I had my hands on it even and put it down, which means I will certainly come across it as I organize, but for now it is lost in the move. thing is. how do you connect it to the wifi so that I can use my iPhone as the remote if you don’t have a remote?? WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY it appears. but I’m weirdly proud that I managed it.
#I had to connect it to my modem with a LAN cable#but because of how things are positioned I ended up having to bring my tv over to my modem too#bc my computer wouldn’t act like a straight up monitor 😒#so I’m over in the corner connected by tiny LAN and HDMI cables but with it connected to the modem I couldn’t set up a wifi connection#bc it was like ‘we’re on the ethernet. what’s your problem?’#so i had to program my other OTHER tv remote (bc this one is wherever the Apple TV remote is)#so when I disconnected the LAN I would still have a remote working#so it’s like I used my remote app to set up a workaround remote so I could use the workaround remote to connect to my remote app#ANYWAY#I’m watch tv on a tv in a real chair and suddenly the world doesn’t seem so bad#(I was really melting down earlier this week. but. we’re keeping on. we’re trucking.)

Once upon a time in the early 2000s I see my to an all-night LAN party arranged by a student group at a ballroom at the University with a full stage.
Mainly they were home-built desktops with side windows showing off our work but before case lights were really viable. Most of us were thankful we'd made the switch to flat LCD monitors, but there were a couple huge ass CRT monitors the size of a small child. I lugged my desktop around on a 3-wheeled scooter that was kind of like if a skateboard fucked a Razor scooter (this was purely a me thing, I've never seen anyone else with one). A couple people had laptops but everyone gave them shit about how little they could handle. The computers were hooked up to a spaghetti mass of ethernet cables connected to a daisychain of switches. Very few commuters in the room had wifi capability.
I mainly played Starcraft and Warcraft III tower defense games with guys I'd never met. Possibly some Team Fortress 2 but the lengthy number of hours I'd sank into it never translated to skill and this room was way out of my league.
They had a Rock Band tournament that did earthly rounds in rooms off to the side. But the final tournament rounds were done on the main stage to the whole room. It was fun but not very memorable.
Until one group of guys with tremendous energy got up there. The singer dramatically grabbed the mic, announced their competitive band name, and band started playing "All The Small Things" by Blink-182. The crowed cheered with sudden energy. The singer stripped off his shorts right over his Converse and down to his white briefs, and thew them back into the wings. The crowd roared louder, extremely into it. They absolutely crushed that song. They were both very accurate and also jumping around the stage putting on a great performance that had the whole room singing along, games abandoned. The responsible adults didn't seem thrilled but they were also smart enough to not interfere.
I don't remember if they technically won the competition, but they won the crowd. I think of them whenever I hear a Blink-182 song, even if it's too distant to remember anyone's faces.
no i am not immune to early 2000s pop-punk music that fucks a little harder than everyone likes to admit

How Do Wireless Access Points Work? Understand What They’re Used For
In today’s connected world, reliable Wi-Fi is more than a convenience—it’s a necessity. Whether you're at home, in the office, or at a public venue, chances are you're accessing the internet wirelessly. But how exactly do these networks function? One of the most crucial components making this possible is a wireless access point. Understanding how wireless access points work and what they’re used for can help you make smarter networking decisions, especially when scaling your setup for better coverage and performance.
What is a Wireless Access Point?
A wireless access point (WAP) is a networking device that allows Wi-Fi-enabled devices to connect to a wired network. Think of it as a bridge between your local area network (LAN) and wireless devices like laptops, smartphones, and tablets. While many people confuse access points with routers, they serve distinct purposes. Routers direct traffic between different networks, while access points extend the wireless coverage of a network.
How Do Wireless Access Points Work?
Wireless access points function by broadcasting wireless signals that devices can connect to, just like your smartphone detects available Wi-Fi networks in your area. Here's a step-by-step overview of how they operate:
Connection to a Wired Network The access point is connected to a router or network switch via an Ethernet cable. This connection brings the internet or intranet access to the device.
Transmission of Wireless Signals Once connected, the access point transmits a Wi-Fi signal in its vicinity. This signal acts as a beacon for nearby devices.
Device Authentication When a user tries to connect to the network, the access point manages authentication—often requiring a password or login credentials.
Data Communication After authentication, data can be exchanged wirelessly. The access point receives data from the user device and forwards it to the wired network—and vice versa.
What Are Wireless Access Points Used For?
Wireless access points are essential in a variety of environments, especially when a single router cannot provide sufficient coverage. Here are some common applications:
Large Homes and Offices In larger spaces where Wi-Fi signals from a router might not reach every room, WAPs help extend the signal to dead zones.
Enterprises and Schools In enterprise environments, dozens or even hundreds of access points are used to ensure seamless connectivity for employees and students across large campuses.
Public Spaces Places like cafes, malls, hotels, and airports use multiple access points to offer free or paid internet access to the public.
Outdoor Coverage Specialized outdoor WAPs are weatherproof and used in parks, stadiums, and outdoor venues to provide uninterrupted connectivity.
Benefits of Using Wireless Access Points
Scalability: Easily add more access points as your network grows.
Improved Coverage: Eliminate Wi-Fi dead zones in larger spaces.
Centralized Management: Especially with enterprise-level access points, you can manage all WAPs from a single interface.
Enhanced Security: Business-grade WAPs often offer better security protocols and user authentication methods.
Final Thoughts
Wireless access points are the backbone of modern wireless networking. By understanding how they function and what they’re used for, users and businesses alike can create more robust, scalable, and efficient network environments. Whether for a home network extension or enterprise-grade Wi-Fi deployment, WAPs play a crucial role in keeping us connected.

3. Cat6a Ethernet Cable
An upgrade to Cat6, the Cat6a (augmented) cable can support speeds up to 10 Gbps at longer distances (up to 100 meters). It also provides better shielding against interference, which can be a significant benefit in environments with heavy electrical equipment or high levels of wireless traffic.
Best for: High-performance environments such as gaming, 4K streaming, and business networks.
Limitations: It’s bulkier and slightly more expensive than the Cat5e and Cat6 cables.
4. Cat7 Ethernet Cable
Cat7 cables offer superior performance and are capable of supporting speeds up to 10 Gbps over long distances (up to 100 meters). With better shielding to reduce crosstalk and interference, the Cat7 cable is ideal for environments with heavy data traffic.
Best for: Large-scale business networks, professional gaming, and video editing setups.
Limitations: Overkill for average home users; more expensive than lower-category cables.
5. Cat8 Ethernet Cable
Cat8 cables are the newest addition to Ethernet cable technology, supporting speeds up to 40 Gbps for short distances (up to 30 meters). This makes them ideal for data centers and enterprise-level networks but unnecessary for most home users.
Best for: High-performance data centers and enterprise use.
Limitations: Expensive and not needed for typical home or office use.
What to Consider When Choosing an Ethernet Cable for Your Laptop

When selecting the right ethernet cable for your laptop, several factors come into play. Here are some key considerations:
1. Speed Requirements
The speed you require from your laptop LAN cable will determine the type of Ethernet cable you should choose. If you're using the internet for basic tasks like browsing and checking emails, a Cat5e cable may be sufficient. However, for high-speed internet plans, 4K video streaming, or online gaming, you should opt for a Cat6 or Cat6a cable for faster speeds and better performance.
2. Cable Length
The length of the computer network cable matters. Ethernet cables are available in different lengths, ranging from a few inches to over 100 feet. It’s essential to choose the right cable length for your setup. A cable that is too short will limit your setup options, while a cable that is too long can result in unnecessary clutter and possibly affect the quality of the signal.
3. Shielding and Interference
If you live in an area with a lot of wireless signals or have many electronic devices nearby, you may experience electromagnetic interference (EMI). In such cases, consider choosing an ethernet cable with shielding to protect the connection and reduce interference. For example, Cat6a or Cat7 cables come with better shielding than lower-category cables.
4. Durability and Build Quality
A well-made Ethernet cable can last for years. Look for cables with high-quality construction, such as durable PVC jackets or braided designs. If you plan to move your laptop around a lot, choosing a laptop LAN cable with reinforced connectors or strain relief features can prevent damage over time.
5. Price vs. Performance
While buying cheaper cables is tempting, it’s important to balance price with performance. While Cat5e cables may seem like a budget-friendly option, investing in Cat6 or Cat6a cables will future-proof your network setup and ensure better performance, especially as internet speeds continue to increase.
How to Set Up Your Ethernet Cable for Your Laptop
Setting up an ethernet cable for your laptop is relatively straightforward:
Choose the Right Cable: Based on your internet speed and usage needs, pick a network cable (e.g., Cat6 or Cat6a for better performance).
Connect to the Router: Plug one end of the ethernet cable into the Ethernet port of your router or modem.
Connect to Your Laptop: Plug the other end of the laptop LAN cable into your laptop’s Ethernet port. If your laptop doesn’t have an Ethernet port, you may need a USB to Ethernet adapter.
Check the Connection: Once connected, ensure that your laptop recognizes the wired network. You should see an internet connection status on your laptop indicating a stable wired connection.
Test the Speed: After connecting via Ethernet, use an online speed test tool to check your internet speed to ensure that you're getting the expected speeds.

How Managed Switches Are Transforming Smart Factory
Enabling Centralized Network Control for Streamlined Operations
By facilitating centralised control, managed switches are essential to streamlining network administration in smart factories.
Network administrators can configure, monitor, and troubleshoot all connected devices from one place thanks to an easy-to-use interface. This centralised visibility improves overall operational efficiency and speeds up response times during faults.
Everything can be controlled remotely, including traffic monitoring, VLAN configuration, and security policy implementation.
In addition to reducing the amount of manual intervention, this capability enables proactive maintenance and speedier decision-making.
Consequently, factories are able to maintain optimal performance throughout their entire network, minimise downtime, and accomplish smooth communication.
Enhancing Network Reliability with Redundancy Protocols
Continuous network connectivity is essential for sustaining operations in smart factory settings.
Redundancy protocols like Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) and Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), which establish alternative communication channels within the network, are supported by managed switches.
These protocols ensure minimal disruption by automatically rerouting data traffic through backup links in the event of a link failure.
By lowering the chance of expensive downtime, this inherent fault tolerance helps maintain high network availability.
Managed switches give smart factories the resilience they require to enable automation, real-time monitoring, and data-driven decision-making by promptly identifying and fixing network loops or failures.
Boosting Efficiency Through VLAN-Based Traffic Segmentation
In smart factories, managed switches that support virtual LANs (VLANs) are crucial for managing and streamlining network traffic.
VLANs keep unnecessary traffic from straying into unrelated areas by dividing the network into distinct virtual zones, such as production, administration, and security systems. By restricting access to sensitive data, this isolation improves data security and eases congestion by ensuring that data stays on its intended path.
Critical applications thus get the bandwidth they require, enhancing network performance as a whole.
In addition to making complex industrial environments easier to manage, VLANs streamline maintenance and troubleshooting while guaranteeing effective and secure communication between all departments.
Supporting Real-Time Communication with QoS Prioritization
Real-time communication is crucial to the efficient operation of automation and control systems in smart factory settings.
Quality of Service (QoS) features on managed switches give priority to important data traffic over less urgent transmissions.
This guarantees that even during times of high network load, time-sensitive operations—like sensor feedback, machine control, or safety alerts—are delivered without interruption.
QoS contributes to the network's low latency and high reliability by giving priority to important packets.
This is particularly important in industrial automation, where safety and operational efficiency are directly impacted by snap decisions and constant data flow.
Powering IoT Devices with PoE for Simplified Connectivity
Power over Ethernet (PoE), which enables the delivery of both power and data via a single Ethernet cable, is revolutionising smart factory networks.
Installing IoT devices like IP cameras, sensors, access points, and control panels is made easier by managed switches with PoE capabilities.
This cuts down on installation time and expenses by doing away with the need for additional wiring or separate power supplies.
Managed PoE switches also provide remote power management, which enables administrators to keep an eye on and manage how power is distributed to linked devices.
This supports a flexible, scalable, and affordable infrastructure for smart manufacturing systems, which is particularly useful in expansive or difficult-to-reach locations.
