Balancing Personal Life and Thesis Writing: A Guide for PhD Students
Embarking on a PhD journey is a significant endeavor that requires dedication, perseverance, and time management skills. Alongside the rigorous demands of academic research and thesis writing, it's crucial for PhD students to prioritize their personal well-being and maintain a healthy work-life balance. In this article, we'll explore strategies for effectively managing personal life and thesis writing during your PhD journey, ensuring productivity, fulfilment, and overall well-being.
1. Set Realistic Expectations
One of the first steps in achieving balance is setting realistic expectations for yourself. Understand that pursuing a PhD is a long-term commitment that will require considerable time and effort. Acknowledge that there will be periods of intense work and stress, but also plan for moments of rest and rejuvenation. By setting achievable goals and expectations, you can mitigate feelings of overwhelm and maintain a sense of control over your workload.
2. Establish Boundaries
Establishing clear boundaries between work and personal life is essential for maintaining balance during your PhD journey. Designate specific times for thesis writing and research activities, but also carve out time for leisure, hobbies, and socializing. Communicate your boundaries to your peers, supervisors, and collaborators to ensure that they respect your personal time and priorities. Remember that taking breaks and prioritizing self-care are not signs of weakness but essential components of sustained productivity and well-being. Wrirk is an expert of Thesis Writing For Phd; visit them for more interesting information.
3. Prioritize Time Management
Effective time management is key to balancing personal life and thesis writing. Develop a structured schedule that allocates dedicated time for thesis-related tasks, such as literature review, data analysis, and writing, as well as time for personal activities and commitments. Use productivity tools and techniques, such as Pomodoro technique, to maximize focus and efficiency during work sessions. Regularly review and adjust your schedule as needed to accommodate changes in priorities or deadlines.
4. Practice Self-Care
Self-care is paramount for maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being throughout your PhD journey. Make time for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul, whether it's exercising, meditating, spending time in nature, or pursuing creative hobbies. Prioritize adequate sleep, nutrition, and hydration to support your overall health and resilience. Remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish but essential for sustaining your productivity and effectiveness as a researcher.
5. Seek Support
Don't hesitate to seek support from your support network, including family, friends, peers, and mentors, when balancing personal life and thesis writing becomes challenging. Share your concerns, struggles, and successes with trusted individuals who can offer encouragement, perspective, and practical assistance. Consider joining or forming a peer support group with fellow PhD students to exchange ideas, share resources, and provide mutual support throughout your academic journey. Go to https://www.wrirk.com/domains to download the problem statement and submit a request to get synopsis format for Phd & research proposal format, as per your university's guidelines.
6. Embrace Flexibility
Flexibility is key to navigating the ups and downs of your PhD journey while maintaining balance in your personal life. Be prepared to adapt to unexpected setbacks, changes in plans, or shifts in priorities. Embrace a growth mind-set that allows you to learn from challenges and setbacks and find creative solutions to overcome them. Remember that progress is not always linear, and it's okay to adjust your goals and expectations along the way.
7. Celebrate Milestones
As you progress through your PhD journey and reach significant milestones, take time to celebrate your achievements and acknowledge your hard work and dedication. Whether it's completing a chapter, passing a milestone review, or submitting a manuscript for publication, celebrate these accomplishments as a testament to your resilience and perseverance. Reward yourself with small treats or activities that bring you joy and fulfilment, reinforcing your motivation and sense of achievement.
In conclusion, achieving balance between personal life and thesis writing during your PhD journey requires intentionality, self-awareness, and proactive self-care. By setting realistic expectations, establishing boundaries, prioritizing time management, practicing self-care, seeking support, embracing flexibility, and celebrating milestones, you can navigate the challenges of academia while nurturing your overall well-being. Remember that balance is not a destination but an on-going process of self-discovery and growth, and prioritize self-compassion and kindness as you navigate the complexities of your PhD journey.

I prepared this ask in the Notes app only for Tumblr to not let me copy and paste the text so here’s a screenshot bc I’m not typing all that again lol

there’s this funny trend i see in trafficblr art, in that, when there’s a lineup of every past winner, most players will be surrounded by symbols that were relevant to their POV, and perhaps drawn with the last emotion they’d felt just before death (or maybe just whatever emotion the artist most associates with the character). The winners might be doing something, or in a pose that reflects how they won—there are a million ways to make a life series winners’ piece. What’s funny about it is that no one ever seems to know what to do with Scott. He’s most often just standing there looking mildly disgruntled. And for the symbols he’s most depicted with, it’s typically poppies, which are only relevant to the first season; last life scott does not place any importance on poppies, poppies dont ever come up beyond a brief interaction in episode 1, and jimmy as a whole is less relevant to scott’s pov in last life than he is in every other season.
not that this is an issue with the art; the pieces are beautifully done, it’s just representative of how little fandom discussion there is about scott’s win thematically. Most discussion I see are about the watchers and how they hate scott for defying him or whatever, but watcher lore is not discussion of the series itself as much as it is a fan creation that is retroactively applied to create meaning.
Scott’s Last Life win, to me, was achieved through accomplishing what Third Life Scott could not.
Scott spent 3L waiting for his day one ally to die. He kept Jimmy at a distance, often fully gearing himself up first before backtracking to help Jimmy along. There’s a funny disparity in episode 5, where Jimmy spends the entire episode trying to get good enchants on his iron armor, while Scott sets up a villager and gets good enchants for the full diamond set that he’d already had in storage, in about half the time Jimmy took trying to accomplish his own goal, iirc. This disparity is also something scott acknowledges with the “I’ll always be more powerful than you” line, but it’s been a while since ive written a post like this so i unfortunately do not have the episode number memorized on that one anymore. But Scott goes on to explain that he’ll always have better armor and weapons, which is why Jimmy could never kill him. This is all to say that Jimmy and Scott do not stand on equal grounds in their alliance, and, more importantly, Scott does not depend on Jimmy. The progress Scott makes in Third Life is entirely his own, with Jimmy as more of an afterthought than a teammate.
This is what landed Scott his all time lowest placement. After Jimmy dies first, Scott loses sight of his priorities and dedicates his remaining time alive to avenging Jimmy, rather than focusing on his own longevity (like he’d go on to do in future seasons). And, in that way, Scott’s attitude towards Jimmy (disposable, going to die, unreliable) was an indirect contributor to Scott’s low placement.
In contrast: Scott could not have won Last Life without Pearl. Scott has to rely on Pearl from day 1, having only two lives to start with himself. Pearl gives Scott two lives total. Pearl and Scott are almost always together. They made it to the final four by each other’s side. And that forced day 1 reliance on pearl breaks down the role scott typically assumes (*he’s* supposed to be the person people rely on, he’s supposed to be the one bringing everything to the table) which curbs his tendency to see himself as above others, which then allows for the most genuine happiness i have ever seen him have in an alliance.
The comparison between the way Scott talks to Pearl and the way Scott talks to Jimmy is like night and day. Scott doesn’t compliment or otherwise say anything supportive towards Jimmy (save for the “I believe in you! MCC has trained you for this moment!” during Jimmy’s dare to flare attempt) until after Jimmy has already died. With Pearl, however, Scott is much more open about his care towards her, saying that she’s his best friend and that he loves her as early as episode 2. There’s more examples but between last life and third life, Scott’s attitude towards his primary ally is completely different, and i think it’s symptomatic of Scott allowing himself to love and be vulnerable rather than keeping himself at a distance. And i think that it’s so special that scott won the season where he was so close with his day one alliance, directly because of his day one alliance.
because, to me, one of scott’s defining characteristics is his self reliance. He will have allies, yes, but he often assumes a supportive role and acts as a supplier. He doesnt like taking things from other people. Last Life is different because Scott relies on Pearl, too. It’s also not a coincidence that last life is the only season where scott is normal about jimmy but that’s a different post
tldr yes scott won last life with the power of love but not in the way people say he did (ignoring the boogeyman curse was strategy ☝️)
I SHOULD NOTE, though, that the boogeyman curse was still a fail. Although purposeful, Scott receives the penalty and apologizes to his team. He says he just couldn’t bring himself to do it. I do think that his words here aren’t fully honest— he’d admitted earlier that this choice was fully for strategy. But I also think his apologetic attitude here is genuine. Scott is a perfectionist, he needs to succeed; failing, though purposeful, still hurts. He feels the need to apologize. It means so much to me that his win in last life directly follows the choice to fail on purpose. I’m insane though idk
third life scott embodies scotts flaws while last life scott is him overcoming them 👍 is what im trying to say 👍 last life scott is everything that third life scott could not bring himself to be, in allowing himself to love and depend on other people and overall just be a person.
#I couldve explained this way better but i came up with the thesis in the very last paragraph#And went ohhh. Well. The post is already written#So yes i could reformat this all and make it much more compelling by breaking down exactly what i think scotts flaws are through—#Series by series analysis#and then go on and use examples from ll to paint it as the antithesis of all that#all to put in a provable factual way just HOW different scott is in last life compared to other series#And how this aided him and eventually got him the win#But i think thats like. A whole essay?#im imagining an essay format. and i do not. want to write a whole essay right now#so im hoping this kind of shitty condensed version gets my point across#there is an annoying lack of citations but as stated i have not done a scott post in a while and dont have this shit as memorized#also its my birthday in 6 minutes can you believe it#asks#that.blue.mf

warriors 2024 and the art of giving meaning to struggle
alrighty ramble time: let's talk about luther and how he managed to fuck up NYC for good. if luther were like i dunno lex luthor, i'd say his move to destabilize gang relations in nyc is a very fucking calculated move because i really do have to give credit to him in actually achieving the goal he set out for himself because his decision to kill cyrus,,,,aka the one that organized the "Please No Gang Fighting" summit that aimed to unite everyone against the bigger baddies of NYC,,,essentially fucking killed any and all chance of such a peace summit and unity initiative from ever happening again. because, like, after seeing a beloved and seemingly untouchable leader be murdered in front of all of you despite explicit instructions to Not Bring Weapons, would you even risk witnessing that chaos again in another summit? would you trust that forming a united force work after such a tragedy? is there even a possibility of finding trust among other NYC gangs if someone among their number killed your very hope? so yea knowing how the movie ends with just the gramercy riffs saying that the warriors (with two dead people and one arrestee in tow) are off the hook because someone else witnessed luther killing cyrus,,,the original ending is actually quite hopeless when you think about it in their shoes. in the words of movie swan himself in the movie, is what they end up with all their night of sleepless fighting and struggle is worth? hence, i now really see why warriors (2024) decided to make what I consider to be the 2nd biggest diversion outside of the genderswap: making cleon live - because otherwise, the warriors' struggles surviving the night can be said to be struggle for solely struggle's sake.
in the musical, cleon is an astute believer in cyrus and the future cyrus envisions for all of NYC - thus, she becomes the harbinger of cyrus' hope in the form of still breathin' and somewhere in the city. her being alive doesn't detract from the widespread tragedy faced by the NYC gangs - i still really believe that no matter what, luther effectively killed their one shot at true unity and trust - but in cleon's own words: "What do you do when they kill everything you believe in? Give it meanin." the decision to keep cleon alive is warriors (2024) counteractive measure at the absolute shithole luther placed NYC in because in her message of keeping the dream alive despite situations that are, realistically speaking, impossible to wholly recover from, gives their struggle meaning, purpose, and direction - the end goal being hope. that theme of hope despite and in spite of adversity now becomes evident on as to why we are made to be invested in the warriors' journey home and their subsequent growth. in mercy's decision to leave the orphans for a place of belonging and pride that can make her finally hold her head up high. in ajax's and fox's decisions to retaliate against their pursuants among sleazy old men in blue. in swan's persistence in getting the rest of her crew home alive despite still reeling from the loss of her leader and her fellow warriors. all attribute their own reasons to why they resist and rebel because they ultimately hope for something fucking better. ultimately, warriors (2024) exists because of the want to give more meaning to struggle in the form of hope amidst hopelessness. in the movie, the warriors find their meaning in the sweet simple bliss of survival - in making to coney island's sunrise. but in the album, another meaning is emphasized among not just the warriors, but the marginalized communities of NYC in general: their meaning of struggle goes beyond surviving the night - because they carry on and carry forth the dream of one day having a city where they all come home alive. because after all, isn't the formation of grassroots rooted in resistance - and isn't resistance born out of the want and hope for something better?
#okay um here as an journalist activist here in the ph this theme hits hard for me#because like for example why do i choose to like bend myself backwards in my work beyond academics?#because this is my means of resisting#and why do i choose to resist#because i choose to believe in the hope for something better#hence with that i understand why cleon had to live for warriors 2024 to work#because without an earnest believer in cyrus' vision of a better nyc for their constituents#then the theme of hope and the meaning of struggle made evident in cleon's shining moments#would not have been fully recognized as a running theme for the warriors' journey home - at least in my opinion#especially now that the genderswap has led the recontextualization of their struggles#and with added socio-political themes in the form of emphasis on the cops being the fuckin baddies#but yea anyways woo this is why i hold somewhere in the city and still breathin as among my top 3 best songs here#lyrically and thematically speaking#because like woo we have our two thesis statements right there hallelujah#anyways woo thats the warriors ramble for tonight imma sleep na bye bye#warriors#warriors album#warriors musical#lin manuel miranda#eisa davis

I don’t like when people ask how many books you plan to read/have read this year one because I think that’s a weird relationship to have to books and two because I think even reading a chapter or a portion of something is valuable. this is especially true with non-fiction but even with fiction I think any amount you read, even if you don’t read the entire thing, is not a failure or ‘incomplete’
#I read basically exclusively non fiction and every page I read is beneficial like I’m always learning something#like my relationship to reading is often extractive and utilitarian because of school and research#but that extractive process doesn’t require reading the whole text like 99.9% of the time#I’ve only read a third of Orientalism for example but like I have a good grasp of Said’s core arguments and concepts#and like part of how I finished authoritarian personality (a 1000 page book) was by skipping & skimming sections#like the whole is not always more valuable than its components#and also like ‘I read this book to complete it’ is not an insincere way to engage with a text but I feel like it’s limiting#if that’s your primary approach to reading. Like you read a book just to say you read it#& also more petty but I think that if your argument or thesis only works if people read 100% of your book then you’re doing a poor job#of getting your point across#again obviously it’s valuable to read and process whole complete texts not dismissing that but like#I don’t find a lot of inherent value in reading a book just to complete it u know

I just find it very interesting that all the labour classed as lesser (most often seen as "women's labour") becomes indispensable in moments of crisis. It's just interesting to see how quickly people turn to that labour and then discard it in moments of peace or prosperity, devaluing it until another crisis hits.
#politics#feminism#yes this is me reflecting upon the knitting and war video#it's interesting how a 'feminine' craft like knitting became recognized only in tangent to the violence of war#my feelings about this are complex but i think textile craft is a good example of what i mean#because textiles are revolutionary to humanity - just like the discovery of fire. and yet it is so often devalued#especially when it comes to profit over human welfare#look the textile artist to even stauncher hater of capitalism pipeline is real and i'm barreling down it faster than the speed of light#complex feelings on this but this is my general thesis i guess#(context: i was watching a video about knitting and how it supported war efforts in wwi and wwii)#(and while i did know a lot about the topic in that it was a huge part of war support propaganda it was still interesting)#i feel like that video encapsulated a lot of angst i have about crafting labour especially#and also by 'interesting' i actually mean infuriating and stupid

I’d argue that one of the main themes (if not the main theme) of Jujutsu Kaisen is that love is what gives humans the will to live.

i really want to complain about the essays i'm marking but it feels inappropriate and unprofessional to do it on a public blog (certainly i would have been mortified to see my instructors complain abt my essays on social media), so please just know I Am Suffering and I cannot wait to see the correlation between class attendance and grade in this year where attendance was the lowest i've ever had. maybe if you came to class!! you would learn something!!!!!!
#students w absolutely no knowledge of feminist theory who think “shakespeare was a misogynist” constitutes a worthy thesis statement lol#[fictionalised example btw. i never post direct quotes from my students]

i got a new camera with my scholarship and it took my father exactly 12 hours to start insulting my photos once again :D
#i genuinely hate that i actually care about his judgment#it's always like this#i show him a photo or whatever thing i do the only thing he does is insulting the thing i show him#every now and then i believe that he won't do it this time and then he proves me wrong#this time he seemed to really like the camera and everything and indeed yesterday for the first time in my life i heard genuine compliments#from him#but nooo it took him 12 fucking hours#the thing i hate the most tho is that he only does it when no one outside of family can see him#because for example a few months ago it was my grandpa's birthday (my father's father) and there were some friends of his family#and i was sitting next to a couple and the man of this couple is the son of my grandpa's ex partner#he really likes photography and his wife told him i take photos (she asked me because she saw me with a camera) and thus i had to show some#to him#and he genuinely liked them all and praised them a lot#like an hour later he was speaking to my father next to me and he was praising my photos#my father whole ass said “oh yeah she's really good her photos are very beautiful”#HE DOES THIS SHIT ALL THE TIME#he never shows that he's proud of me NEVER#and yet when others outside of the family praise me during a conversation he has with them he's so quick to show his approval and pride#he almost boasts#like fuck you you literally insult me the whole time#and the funny thing is that he complains that i never want to do anything with him#if i do whatever activity with you you are gonna insult me#he's very likely the reason why i hate everything i make#the only thing i was always able to protect from him is my writing#and that's because i always refused to show it to him even if he asked multiple times#and he always asked after parents-teachers meetings because that was when my teachers used to say that i write beautiful essays#and by next summer i will totally have to show it to him because i would have written my thesis and thus i have to make him read it#because everyone in my family will read it since that's basically a tradition and i'm the first in our family that will graduate from uni#and i genuinely feel like crying at the thought because i know he will insult the one thing that he still hasn't touched yet

there's some wider thoughts and commentary to be had on the portrayal of 'madness' in the neath and The Royal Behtlehem Hotel, in ways that I think it is both sympathetic and humanizing of people, while also still falling into portraying it as a joke and making a mockery of things, combined with the question of how this ties into it all with the real world horrific history of the bethlehem hospital and what thats means for it to portray it in such a way
but i dont even know where to start or if its even a topic i can speak on
#plus how that depiction has changed as the time progresses#i think ive talked on this before but i have no memory of it#cuz like i think a lot of folks w mental illness latch onto the manager and the beth for a reason#and i think a lot of it is sympathetic. but thats just from my own view and im not someone who specifically reglarly deals with hallucinati#ns and the like#i also dont think a lot of it is neccesarily.... good? i think the topsy king is a good example of this tbh. a lot of his stuff is portraye#as something to make fun of. but i also think parts of the text and HD are very sympathetic and humanizing to him#and then also the questionable writing aspect with returning is mind to him#yknow?#like i dont think any of it is 'problematic' in its entierty. we know the beth is beloved to me#and i think theres that weird line between magical and mental illness.#i think this is all very similar to the stuff with sheogorath in tes tbh#prophet's fl nonsense#im rambling XD XD#this is something that would be a thesis paper and not a tumblr post
