thinking about veilguard and bioware in general, i think we are reaching a point where people need to grapple with the inherent limits of what stories can be told in our Current Society and in AAA gaming companies.
on a labour level: mass layoffs, tons of developers leaving despite previously talking about how passionate and happy they were to be involved, not even paying severance, and crunching employees to the point of burnout. this is unfortunately pretty standard for AAA game companies.
on a cultural level: it is SO white and SO centrist-ly Canadian. i wrote up these asks outlining how. it is a repeated pattern of writing in which they go into tortured racial oppression allegories at best, while constantly peppering in a "but BOTH SIDES were wrong and made mistakes :( :( :(", in between their fictional atrocities that are clearly mirroring irl genocides and enslavement. or at worst, it's "the qunari are radical islamic borg" which has even less nuance. i personally thought, since dai came out in 2014, and a lot has changed since then about the world and in public awareness, that this would have filtered into the narrative and resulted in more satisfying and historically grounded writing. unfortunately not the case. it's shocking if you compare it to how sharp and aware and unflinching something like disco elysium is.
so what does this mean?
under these conditions, it is unavoidable that we get development by people who are rapidly cycled out of the company or demoralized into burnout. we get digestible, easy little soundbites of lore without much substance, because any complexity needs more time and coordination rather than the process of "quick, we have these assets, a lot of people involved in making them just got laid off, we need to make Something by next quarter to show the CEO". we get very little cohesion between games, despite the clear intent from dai to have so many plot points set up to follow through in a sequel, because the team and development are so chaotic that they can't hold onto a vision and complete it.
we also get this inherent caution and "conservatism" from the narrative, because on an ideological level, they're largely white people who want cops to be included in pride. so any major change to even a fictional society is Bad and Scary, and shouldn't be done without making sure that every character finger-wags appropriately at non-state violence. there is clearly not much ideological or even ethnic diversity within the leadership; or at least not enough that anyone there felt comfortable even speaking up on minor issues like the Incredibly Orientalist Isabela Outfit, let alone anything larger.
i don't personally think there's too much value in trying to analyze veilguard's plot or lore at this point. the final product is chaotically developed and does not seem to reflect the goals of the creators as set up in prior games, it's basically a ship of theseus in terms of the people and ideas involved in making it. this is sad for all of us, who were interested in the story, and attached to the characters, and were creatively fulfilled by engaging in the fandom. it's probably worse for the developers who have lost their jobs, burnt out, or feel unhappy with the game that they spent years of their life working on. it's certainly miserable as an indictment of The Industry, as well as the general societal climate of white Canadian centrism.
the solution is to create a society where people can develop games in peace and prosperity and stay on projects for longer, rather than constantly getting turfed out without severance pay. and to get some genuine leftists, poc, and indigenous people on staff who can weigh in and provide significant input, rather than a Council Of Liberal White Edmontonians every time.
in the meantime, at the very least, let's please stop preordering AAA games and supporting companies who notably abuse their employees.
#veilguard critical#bioware critical#txt#or...! people get really into godot or renpy or something and create an incredibly high effort unpaid project of dubious legality#if anyone wants to do that blink twice.#really the disappointment about dragon age (to me) is that interactive narratives have so much potential as a method of storytelling#but they did not really even scratch the surface in this one#and probably never will again bc the company seems to be hemorrhaging staff like crazy#if you compare this to something like supergiant games it's wild#they've been retaining their staff for like 15 years and you can SEE them building and progressing from each game and learning from it#and their games are beautiful and incredibly innovative and well written#and from what i know they prioritize work-life balance and refuse to crunch even if it's 'voluntary'#and meanwhile bioware is going from uhhh. me3 to anthem to andromeda to veilguard.#with the crunch being a compounding issue all the way through and probably contributing to a lot of mistakes and talent loss#anyway my only experience in game dev is fooling around by myself on dumb ideas but#i think even just from a general project management perspective it's clear that it's not possible to have good output#under these types of chaotic situations with a lack of leadership and retained knowledge

Glass becomes invisible when dipped in oil
Because the beaker and the vegetable oil have the same refractive index value, which is 1.47.
The index of refraction is how much light bends and slows down as it passes through a medium. Don't forget to follow us.

In case you missed it, Game Rant did an interview with Nikolay Dybowski about Pathologic 3. Here is the link for it.
And here are the bits that stood out the most to me:
Q: The non-linearity of time and how it will be related to the nature of the Town are also core story components. How did this affect design and direction?
A: Connecting non-linear time with a long, narrative-heavy story that involves many characters and cause-and-effect chains would be extremely difficult. We focused on what the player feels in the moment rather than on gathering information in the right order. The latter approach works well in shorter formats like Her Story or 12 Minutes, but in Pathologic, it would be overwhelming.
We wanted players to feel like “everything, everywhere, all at once”—similar to Billy Pilgrim in Slaughterhouse-Five. Different versions of reality coexist simultaneously, creating a “quantum” feeling for the player. Look at the time travel mechanic as an opportunity to correct mistakes, or even to make deliberate mistakes in order to unlock new paths and ideas. It is like a "sanctioned save scum."
-
Q: Conversely, how will it (Pathologic 3) connect to and consider the events and characters in Pathologic 2?
A: Consider it as two subjective retellings of the same events. This is the same Town, the same twelve days, the same participants and events that occurred in the Haruspex’s story. But this is a different perspective. Like two witnesses recounting the same event in Rashomon, the stories vary greatly, each focusing on different details. Finally, we always give our heroes the right to make honest mistakes, forget, and even lie. Every narrator is an unreliable narrator.
-
Q: How did Pathologic’s previous philosophical explorations help inform or play into the narrative and themes here?
A: Everything we now see as true and valuable, we’ve kept. Everything we’ve outgrown, like childhood clothes, we either reimagined and reinterpreted to give these ideas new meaning, or let go of them. After all, we’ve grown a lot (hopefully, along with the industry). When I first conceived Pathologic, I was 21 and completely alone. Now I’m 47, surrounded by incredibly talented people who enrich this universe as much as I do, and that makes a difference.
We’ve kept the idea of the tragedy of utopian projects. We kept the idea that the plague is a voice of the natural order—one that the thinking human mind cannot accept—and that it has its own truth. We retained the belief that evil cannot be defeated with its own tools or outplayed on its field; yet it can be defeated realistically in a different, orthogonal way. In another dimension.
-
Q: It’s mentioned that the Bachelor is searching for an immortal man in Pathologic 3. Can you say if this is in reference to Mark Immortell?
A: No, there’s no connection between Simon Kain (one of the town’s rulers) and Mark Immortell (the director of the town theater). Mark is a clown. He awkwardly mimics Simon, parodying him, which is why he takes on this pseudonym. He's fully aware that he’s a jester, and the gesture itself is ironic.
-
Q: What do you hope players will take away most from Pathologic 3?
A: The hope that humanity remains a promising and capable species.
-
Also, new game pictures and screenshots dropped:

(some are old ones I forgot to post)
#I'm trying to take everything at face value and not develop expectations or theories#Because getting expectations for a game not yet out just leads to disappointment#Ice-pick Lodge did great creating the last two games and took them in a direction that I couldn't have predicted#I must have faith in them to deliver with Pathologic in an innovative way that I couldn't have possibly predicted#Even if it contradicts with their past claims/visions#Even if it means my expectations remain unfulfilled#I want to enjoy the story they want to tell. Not the story I hope to be told#I want to experience their cohesive artistic vision and not my own wishfullfilment dreaming#pathologic 3#Likewise there is no mischaractersiation#Keep in mind they reinvented so many character's personalities between P1 and P2#Alexander Saburov is the biggest example#Or even Eva's whole look#They did say p3 will be a retelling through a different perspective and not an astute recounting from a crystal clear memory#so they might do it again in p3#The only thing constant is change#pathologic#♧p3

last time capcom gave shu takumi and his team full reigns on a project they made one of the best games out of the entire nintendo ds line, get that man out of ace attorney and let him write something NEW!! video games are not immune from endless cash-grab sequels, for god's sake i want to see what else he can cook!
#i will strangle phoenix wright with my own two hands if i have to#his last great work in that franchise was literally set almost 200 years before with an entirely new cast#with the innovations and learning experience from a crossover with an entirely unrelated game!#no more aa. we do not need aa7. he tried to write a new set up for the sequels that he did not want to exist and they fucked it all up#and brought back the protagonist he'd resolved into the role of background mentor#i don't want takumi back on the team. i don't want him to have to deal with the writing consequences of 5 and 6#doubly so when they plagiarized half the other new original game he was busy writing in the meantime!#biscia hater moment

ok my OTHER reflection:
on the one hand its really frustrating to see the posts about docs and healthcare in general on here be so narrow-minded. bad experiences with certain providers have lead to a huge spread of misinformation and mistrust with the whole system. which can and HAS lead to people avoiding 'evil' doctors for perfectly treatable illnesses and dying from them (the vaccine bullshit, anyone?)
but on the other hand. it is TERRIFYING how some of these docs practice medicine. at times i think 'are you just burned out and don't give a shit or are you straight up just stupid?' and i work in critical care. where quite literally every case is life or death. even in the academic sector where there is supposedly a standard of excellence, some doctors i would not let touch my loved ones with a ten foot pole.
and that sucks. i know this is the no nuance piss on the poor webbed site but 'the medical system and people that work for it are fallible and aspects of it are morally questionable at best/unethical at worst' AND 'the field of medicine exists to help people first and foremost and mistrusting/avoiding it can be detrimental in the long run' can and DO co-exist
#also. folks i hate to tell you but 'doctors get big pharma kickbacks and they can cure you but just choose not to to get more money'#is a very tempting conspiracy theory. but it is SO UNTRUE.#hey listen. if someone is telling you they can 'cure' your disease magically if you just take x vitamin THEY ARE LYING#even miraculous cures like bone marrow transplants for autoimmune disease and CAR-T therapy#have such severe side-effects that they quite literally kill you#i can't tell you how many times i've taken care of people who#had their cancer 'cured' but the treatment ruined their kidneys/heart/lungs#or fucked their immune system so bad that a common bacteria could completely take them out#anyone selling you miracles is L Y I N G#i understand that a lot of this anger is around disability and chronic illness and psych and i get that. intimately.#its 100% accurate to say that a patient who researched independently about ehlers-danlos or POTS knows more about it than i do.#and its hard to see the profession as 'people who sincerely ARE trying to help' when you actively work with people who fucking suck#and you think like 'you went to school. you went through all this training. you (presumably) passed boards'#we should have at least around the same level of knowledge#but that is often not the case#still#making large scale statements about an entire profession (especially when its supposed to be a civic service) is just... not good#my two cents rec for this is:#if you think you have something rare or unusual try to find a doc that specialized in this i.e. go to an academic center.#trainees are less set in their ways and can think outside the box PLUS if there are new/innovative treatments they would have them#if you need pretty much ANY surgery. private is the way to go#you want surgeons with high volume and experience#surgical techniques do not change on the dime. most havent changed in 50+ years. a lot of other medicine DOES#(this of course does not apply to specialized surgeries like whipple or PTE or schwannoma resection - go to academics for that)#if its REALLY rare whether medical or surgical your GP will not know what to do with you#academic centers are referral centers. they are more likely to have the right tools to diagnose/treat#where was i going with this?#oh yeah i had an odd interaction with an ED doc admitting to me last night that was NOT practicing within current standard of care#and was just so casual and assured i started to doubt MYself. like. am I the crazy one?!?!#like i'm young i dont know everything SURE

I'm a few layers into Bananza, and alr i can say it's worth the $70 personally. I wasn't expected it, but hey, I'm glad I feel like the product is worth it's price tag.
Coincidentally, it makes TotK feel like it shouldn't even be $60 dollars 💀. The more I compare and contrast how TotK and Bananza "evolve" from their predecessor (BotW and Odyssey respectively) i can only become more radicalized in believing that TotK is a sloppy mess that really should've been a $40 expansion pack DLC.
#it really is interesting to try and figure out why one works and the other doesnt#a big part really is how they handle innovation#DK feels like every innovation it does improves upon the game because it makes me engage with the core mechanics MORE#TotK's innovations make me engage with the game LESS. I am punished for actually approaching a different way#because why waste time and try something when the humble 3 part hover bike can solve 9/10 problems#whereas with DK sure i could just smash everything and eventually find everything i need#but thats LONGER. If you take the time to experiment and learn DK's controls you are rewarded with an optimized playthrough#and REWARDED with additional bananas and secrets#in summary:#TotK's optimized strategies have you engage with the game LESS#whereas DK's optimized strategies have you engage with MORE#at least thats what i think so far#dk bananza#totk salt

it’s interesting to see how taylor has always imagined her ideal partner as being courageous (“headfirst fearless,” “this love is brave and wild,” “you walked in wearing a football helmet and said okay let’s talk,” “don’t blame me love made me crazy if it doesn’t you ain’t doing it right,” “standing broad-shouldered next to her was a love that was really something….”) and how i think at first she thought that joe simply being willing to be with her felt courageous but then as she grew she realized that it wasn’t enough of that feeling because he wasn’t always standing broad-shouldered next to her, only when it was convenient for him. and that’s not fearless. that’s just doing what’s easiest
#i’ve been thinking a lot recently about love languages#and how not only are there the five that everyone talks abouf#but like. for me. i experience love through excitement. i’m excited about this! and if you love me then you should be too!#and how i show others i love them is by being excited about their lives snd interests#so i’ve been thinking lately that another love language (or maybe currency) is an emotion#and i think for taylor it has always been fearlessness#because she’s SUCH an innovator. about everything#her career and her work and her personal life and the industry and and and#so i think part of love for her is the enjoyment of trying new things!! and exploring how that can improve your life!#and i think that’s what she’s talking about all those times#and also why sweet nothing is on the denial playlist. oops.#(what she originally ran home to him for was the love that made her crazy. not sweet nothing.)#ttpd#random thoughts with grace
