Types of Power

Resource Power: Resource power involves control or ownership of valuable resources, assets, or material wealth. Symbolic Power: Symbolic power arises from the ability to shape meanings, values, or cultural norms within society. help people on the last post being like "who is possibly having drama on iNaturalist" buddy you have no idea. every single corner of that website is mired in drama that you cant even imagine. every identifier leaderboard is regularly having hatfield and mccoy level schisms. there are published experts getting into heated arguements dozens of comments long under a bad cellphone photo of a snake. every power user has a list of at least 3 other users who they would physically fight in an instant given the opportunity.

There is sooo much fun contrast between Breath of the Wild and Age of Calamity Link, and the one I can't stop laughing at is SHIELD SURFING it is ridiculous!

Like here's Shield surfing in Botw-

It's pretty, and if it's rainy I can slide even more. I do it for fun off a nearby hill if I have a shield to spare. I press Y or X to do a fancy kick or spin, and I can attack some monsters with it passing by. The greatest danger with shield surfing is Link hitting a rock, his shield breaking, and him dying or using a fairy/Mipha's grace. More likely he eats some a lot of apples. Outside of Link potentionally breaking a leg tho, it's fun! I once caught a horse in botw by shield surfing, I spun and accidentally flip-flopped onto her, named her Flip-flop in remembrance. If I do some kicks and jumps while shield surfing Link will even laugh and make happy sounds, which shows he's enjoying it. Fun happy times in botw while shield surfing :)

Then there's Shield surfing in Aoc-

Link screams HYAH! or some other raging and loud battle cry, as he hops on his shield and speeds, not towards, not around, but straight into whatever monsters stand in his way. The agonised cries of dying monsters fill the air as Link turns into a tunnel of pure deadly force. Is he going uphill? downhill? Doesn't matter, he's going, gravity has no hold on him. The worst case scenario you ask? Link shield surfs straight into a bomb barrel. Takes everything out quicker, and he loses half a heart from it. I finished an entire mission using only Link's shield surfing the other day. The game reminded me how to dodge bc it thought I forgot the other controls. I didn't need to dodge, just surf. Aoc Link doesn't go shield surfing for fun, he is on a mission and he becomes a whirling funnel of death.

And I mean all that literally by the way-

Aoc Link: Shield surfs to KILL and destroy, he is out for blood

And hey, looking at how the ability controls are explained in the game-

Botw- "Hop on your shield and slide down hills."

Aoc- "Link: One-Handed Weapons / Press X while running to shield surf."

So- in Botw it IS for fun- 'hop on'- whereas in Aoc shield surfing is an attack. hmm

..It makes sense I guess. Aoc Link killed the enemy, and Botw was the one who was killed- but it seems in the end Wild's the one who gets to live.

YEAH so anyways I actually cannot at the moment shield surf in Aoc without laughing bc he is so. so very violent.

I mean look! Look at the difference of scenes left behind after Link goes shield surfing (Botw, then Aoc)

Watching supernatural for the first time only after experiencing it through online memes feels really crazy. You guys weren't kidding about destiel being insane. And I'm only on season 5.

I have such complicated feelings about Athena's regert in epic. Because on one hand. Athena WAS right. Odysseus did need to listen her. And he did need to kill the cyclops. And her regert and her desire to find a better path for the future makes it seem that wasn't the case. That odysseus was right to adopt polites mindset (WHICH is a whole other post I might write up. I have. Thoughts!)

And that is very much not what Athena is regretting. She regerts leaving and LEAVING ONLY. (And maybe her comment about the dead friends). She regerts not being able to make odysseus listen. And later she regerts what happened to odysseus because she's horrified about what he suffered with calypso.

How many times in those ten years did Athena almost go visit odysseus on the automatic. When she left, she had convinced herself that odysseus was just another mentee just another one of her heros. She had been convincing herself of this for years, for odysseus's whole life basically. And then when she left she found that that was not the case. The pain she felt would not allow her denial anymore. (Yall ever lose a friend? Have a best friend become a stranger? That shit hurts like nothing else.) So at first she's angry and hurting and then later she's idgent with herself (she's not going to apologize first. Like hell shes the goddess here.) and hurting and then she's just lonely and hurting.

Shes not really close to any one on Olympus. And odysseus always took such good care of her (his prayers and devotion and inventions fed her so well) even though she's a war goddess and doesn't need it. And he was always fearless of her. Comfortable with her the way literally nobody else is. (Because he's her friend /her best friend) and Olympus is all politics and cold distance and catering to her father and she tried to go visit diomedes but (the poor boy) is still so afraid of her. And was all great Athena direct me to where you need the spear thrown. (The feeling of heart break is familiar now. She's never felt this human before how do they cope)

And so she's lonely and bored and hurting and she MISSES her best friend. She REGETS leaving. And she's missing and reverting enough to swallow her godly pride and go visit odysseus friend. Maybe she won't apologize first but she can extend the first olive branch. So she goes to Ithaca and does not find him. That's super weird but she does find telemachus

Telemachus who, despite his circumstances is so happy. Who teaches her about how the future could be. And they talk about it, how the future could be. (Honorable warfare. No more camp slaves, so more women hiding in her temples and Athena failing to protect them from being raped. Giving your enemies a the chance to surround and then dealing out a quick death honorable death if they dont.) Telemachus who calls her friend immediately. Who is maybe a shyer happier verison of his father. Who odysseus might be if he ...hadn't had her in his life. (It's a horrible thought. Heart break is a familiar feeling.)

So she hustles telemachus off the island. They make a plan, telemachus will be safe from the suitors. Athena will block the women's door so none of the suitors can go in. And telemachus will look for his father in the mortal relam, seeking odysseus's old comrades and she will look for odysseus in the godly realm.

So Athena, filled with heart break and regret but hopeful for the first time since she was four (and play fighting with pallas) goes time diving for her old friend. And is /horrified/ when she finds him. Finds out how exactly he spent the last seven years. Another one of her chosen violated another one she failed to protect. Her best friend gods. What has she done? This never would have happened if she had never left. Why did she leave? It was odysseus's first fuck offense why did she leave?

She has to help. SHE HAS TO

So off she goes, pissing off her father for the first time ever. And putting her pride to beg (also for the first time ever. Odysseus do you see this shit I'm doing for you)

By the time she's talking to odysseus again. She's spent ten years of heart break missing her best friend, the guilt has cumulated into self blame for not preventing odysseus's violation. (Keep in mind that witnessing trauma is just as traumatizing as going through it. And Athena is a chaste goddess. ) telemachus has shown her a new path for the future. Hence her regert and wondering about leading odysseus astray.

But then this tragic complicated guilt and character growth Athena goes through gets boiled down to actually polites was right (again I have thoughts about his philosophy and that is a completely separate post. As is how telemachus and polities views differ (because they do!!!!!) But again. Separate post.) And any killing at all is bad. And then you have fics where Athena begs odysseus's forgiveness and claims that all killing is bad and (like no hate obvious people can write and headcanon however they want. ) it's just an instant fuck no for me and I've got to click out of said fics. And I know this is part due to this culture we've developed lately and childish black and white thinking (bad vs good. No nuace. If anybody disagrees with my opinion that's uncomfortable and that threatens me so therefore that person is evil and I must attack them) and partially because in fandom things get summerize, nauce gets lost. And it's hard to see the nuace in a musical playlist anyway. And everybody is going to interpret things differently and all that.

But at the end of the day. Athena was right that the cyclops needed to be killed. And she knows this she doesn't regret this. Just how she handled the situation , just that she was so ubrupt with her best friend, everything that led to odysseus being trapped on that island for seven years.

Mech pilot system where there's three pilots???

One for the left hemisphere, one for the right hemisphere, and one for the cerebellum?

Like, you all still have to be drift compatible, you all still have to be in the cockpit together, but there's basically two thinkers and one translator.

Imagine that the mech designers fought this for years. Two humans every time with massive neural network loads on both the machine and the humans. Pilots could only be medically cleared to operate a machine for four years, max, and then their careers were over. Most didn't make it even that long.

And then someone figures out that if you put in another human to translate between the humans and mech, it flows so much smoother.

Two pilots in the front, the ones doing the strategy and the martial arts and the orders and the takedowns. A third in the back, suspended and all but fugue as they relay human-to-mech and mech-to-human, a person turned into a slave drive, but still tangled up into everybody's heads.

Like, imagine the possibilities?!

You walk into the chow hall and the people who are interested in the shiny new pilots want to know if you're a Leftie or a Migi or a Cera.

Lefties and Migis who spent too long in the cockpit that day who feel like they can't think clearly without that little voice in the back of their head whispering the answers.

Ceras who space out when the room gets loud, who accidentally expect someone else to say what they're thinking, who have nerve damage all across their bodies because it takes all they have to sort data.

Mechs who are older than the trio structure who had their cockpits gutted and refitted, who have spaghetti running up to the chunk of metal that is the third pilot's seat, like a spare part slapped into the room and given too much control.

A Cera who hangs out in the mech bay because the humans are too far from them anymore, but the mecha can't talk to them, either.

a Leftie who can't stand being in the same room as their Migi without the Cera to talk between them.

A Migi who barely knows how to be their own person anymore because so much of their brain is just outside of their reach.

A mech that just wants things to go back to the way they were, pain and lag be damned.

The Spine always wants to be human, but is the furthest from it. His 'humanlike upgrade' gets read as uncanny valley and no one is mistaking that silver plating for human skin

The Jon is frankly the most humanlike, but doesn't care. His gold plating could be mistaken for a natural skin tone and he has the most natural looking hair, plus literal human fingers

The Pirate AU sounds hilarious and heartbreaking. I'm getting an inkling I'd want to strangle both Ford and Stanley at times. Poor older twins. Poor Soos. Poor younger twins.

And I had a nap daydream that Ford, once he accepts that this is Stanley, will try to avoid him. ('Try' the keyword.) Because he's still trapped in the idea of, Ford Is A Tragedy, and the situation seems to affirm his belief. He swore to take care of him, but what good is that when a) his brother doesn't need taking care of, b) he wants nothing to do with Ford, and c) Stanley's happy without his memories?

Why should he force his presence onto him, when it made Stanley miserable for so long?

Soos gets along well with him, but that's because it's Soos. Soos is a good person. He's able to tell him about Mabel and Dipper without dragging up painful memories. (Or so Ford thinks.)

Stanley is confused and angry, meanwhile, that the sadsack's stopped trying to fight him. He's a good fighter who can actually keep up with Stanley! Now he's- Hey, why are you running away?!

Something else happened in the dream, but that was more vague. I think Ford saved him, but pretended he didn't? (Maybe so Stanley doesn't feel like he owes him?) And they also fought back to back against other space pirates???

Plus some snippet where Ford snaps at him why he changed his mind, because he yelled at Ford to leave him alone before. Several times.

when he realises the truth ford is torn between wanting to drag stan back to the mystery shack (even though he knows that it'd be like kidnapping a total stranger) for the kids' sake, and wanting to leave him alone after seeing stan being so genuinely at ease with himself without ford in his life and without his memories

soos meanwhile is torn between wanting to stay with stan as part of his crew (he will gain back that right hand man/first mate position at all costs, he's looking at you mysterious seven eyed lady who keeps sneaking away when ford is around!!!!!) and wanting to return to the mystery shack because it's something so important to both him and the stan that he knew.....

(meanwhile the towns in the area who heard that these two were altruistic heroes are going ????????? as the duo are just sitting at the bar glumly drinking apple cider as the monster pirate crew are next door robbing all the stores in the port)

while at first captain (not actually) six fingers thought of his weird duplicate as a nuisance and/or one of the cops the henchmaniacs were so terrified of, he grew to love their duels as if it was some sort of game, as if they were just a bunch of kids playing with driftwood they found on the shore

so when his sadsack double + gumdrop sidekick stops trying to kick his ass and completely drops his demands of being let into the cracks in reality, stan starts to become.... bored. sure he has his crew, sure there's still a bunch of places to steal from and the occasional time cop to fend off but now he feels like he's missing something once again and for the first time he wants to know who he was, even if his subconscious is telling him he will never be this carefree again

also stan at his core is a softy and does want people to be happy....

(he's also coping with subconsciously missing his mystery shack family by being even more bossy with the henchmaniacs when he's in a lonely mood and making them do even more chores or dragging them off to go fishing for crew camaraderie day-- "like what the hell??? bill never made us do chores????? or go fishing???? and six fingers doesn't let us kill humans what a buzzkill!!! ........still like six fingers better as a boss though.")

on a lighter note, one of the fights that helped ford and soos realise who the captain was was when stan was feeling particularly annoyed and instinctively went "urghhhhh you again? broom" and soos automatically handed him one before any of the other henchmaniacs could do it

ford is so shocked by this minor betrayal from his sorta-nephew that he doesn't react in time to dodge the captain smacking him in the face with the broom
