Thank you! There are a lot of things I want to say but the 50s AU but some things I think are better explained with illustrations coming your way. I can share a few notes.

Alastor's and Vaughn's (Vox) friendship lasted for years before they broke up. I'm thinking 1954-early 1960s. They had a couple of years of radio silence between the two of them before they talked to each other again.

Alastor radio show is hosted by a local New Orleans station but that will both fortunately and unfortunately change.

Alastor’s killing sprees go up and down activity over the years. The 20-30s were his most active. Lots of reason why they’ve slowed down. (One of the reasons, that he won’t admit, is because of his body pains and stiffness related to aging, serving both wars, and killing people for years are not easy on the body.)

Vaughn has real estate in both CA, Hollywood, and NY, New York City. Oh right, and now in LA, New Orleans.

Vaughn is in a weird place where he’s moving towards television than film as there’s been a decline in the box offices post WW2.

Marian (still working on her full name), wears a lot of different hats in the film production scene in Hollywood. She has experiences with editing, production management, and screenwriting. She’d married Vaughn early 1940s, definitely before WW2 ended so Vaughn could get out of getting drafted to the war. She’s more focus in film than television but she’ll step in as production manager in Vaughn’s projects if he needs the extra help.

(And yes, she does know about Vaughn’s attraction to men and definitely knows about his feelings towards Alastor. Maybe more aware than he does.)

Morningstar family are consider royalty in the entertainment history with a heavy background law and business from Lucifer’s (his name might change for this AU) side of the family. But Lilith is the true lawyer of Charlie’s immediate family. And handles most of the businesses under the Morningstar’s name. Consider them kinda like the Kardashians in this AU.

A friend of mine pointed out that people tend to date those with similarities to their parents.

When I started poking around the PJO franchise, my brain screamed that when I looked at Annabeth and then Gabe. And now I'm thinking about how Rachel may have similarities to Sally.

Please share Perachel thoughts.

This is so GOOD. I am only mad I didn't make the connection first. Percy is a mama's boy, so it's obvious his first girlfriend is a reflection of Sally. Bear with me, this is going to be LONG.

I am going to gloss over the bit about Annabeth and Gabe because it's not as much of a comparison as it is an analogy.

[Before anybody gets mad at anon, he wasn't saying Annabeth is like Gabe, he is paralleling them because Annabeth's form of mistreatment against Percy is so subtle but so deeply unsettling that he hasn't noticed it himself and if he has been feeling suffocated he hasn't yet connected the feeling to Annabeth.]

I feel compelled to clarify a few things in Gabe Annabeth comparison and why it's unfair.

Gabe was in no way, shape, or form Percy's parent.

Percy despises anything remotely related to Gabe like alcohol or poker, so Percy would never be with someone who, even for a second, reminds Percy of Gabe.

Gabe was exploitative of Sally, heavily so with no love or affection attached to it.

Annabeth, on the other hand, does love Percy. She, however, does not love him the way he deserves to be loved because her fatal flaw and a few toxic traits get in her way. For example, Annabeth has a habit of taking Percy for granted and is not appreciative of his efforts. She shows toxic possessiveness over him and almost always gets physical with Percy due to her lack of control over her emotions and not knowing how to express them well enough. She has consistently shown a poor understanding of Percy's motivations and his choices and has a habit of putting blame on Percy in several unnecessary situations. Character development would have served us all well but it doesn't seem very likely because Rick is Rick and Annabeth's fatal flaw is hubris, which means she is unlikely to acknowledge her toxic traits.

Now, back to our main point. Let's look at some direct or indirect parallels between Sally and Rachel and some things that deviate from the mold of Sally's experiences.

Rachel, I think, has always paralleled Sally. She is a mortal born with the sight, something that Sally herself has gone through. Rachel is Sally's past, and Sally is Rachel's future in a way, at least when it comes to their sight. Yet their final choices contrast each other, which is very fascinating.

Sally is a writer, and Rachel is an artist. They both have creative interests and aspirations. They are both naturally compassionate and kind but also very strong-willed.

What Poseidon was to Sally, Percy is to Rachel, and I think I really like that parallel. Maybe in another life, Sally would have said yes to Poseidon's offer, and in another life, Rachel would have turned down the Spirit of Delphi and pursued Percy, and Percy would have pursued her.

(They represent the pathway to an entirely new world to both Sally and Rachel, and its a feeling you cherish forever.)

Remember how being in the rain or near the sea makes Sally look younger and healthier, I think Rachel has a similar connection to the things Percy is connected with. After meeting him, she does seem to like beaches more. Considering her vacation spot was a beach and she also went on a beach date with Percy.

(You might think Percy chose that date spot, but it was obviously Rachel cause Percy is a gentleman who would definitely let his partner choose the date spots and then prepare the date for them as they like)

Her visions begin revolving around Percy, and Percy himself begins dreaming often of her. Not just visions but in general. It is stated in Botl that he dreamed of running into her again and not being able to answer her questions.

Another thing is that Sally parallels Rachel in case of emotional nuances between her and Poseidon and Rachel and Percy. Even after all these years, Sally trusts that Poseidon will not abandon Percy and will protect him when it comes to it, even after her death; especially after her death. The same way Rachel is comfortable in calling Percy whenever she is in trouble or when the visions are bothering her [I think we get a mention of how Percy has met with Rachel's father in The Last Olympian and how Rachel's father TRUSTS Percy's word about keeping Rachel SAFE.] And for the shippers, he has already met the parents and they approve lol.

The trust goes both ways, too. Cause we know Percy is an extremely private person and doesn't like to share anything about himself unless he is obligated too and even then sparingly. Even after being friends with him for so many years, Annabeth and Grover are in dark about a lot of things about him but Rache who has canonically had visions about Percy and his experiences, who has the power to tap into Percy's past and Percy is just so chill with that. Like he knows Rachel knows cause he has had several visions of his own about her, but he just lets it go.

Percy Jackson of all people TRUSTS Rachel enough to let her peek into his past experiences, hell it's because of her that he uncovered the true meaning of the prophecy and then TRUSTED HER WORDS ENOUGH TO STAKE THE FATE OF THE WORLD ON IT. We all know he hates Luke like no one else has hated Luke ever and yet GIVES Luke the knife, not cause of Annabeth's or Hermes's trust in him [they have both been wrong before] but because RACHEL SAID SO.

Another thing that's reminiscent of Sally's relationship with Poseidon is the fact that Sally was in no delusion of who she was with. No delusion of Poseidon being anything other than what he was, a force of nature and a god. He was kind and soft with her, but she was not disillusioned to his other natures. The same goes for Rachel.

Rachel doesn't expect Percy to be some tamed down version of himself or for him to suppress his impulses or nature. He is soft and nice to her. She appreciates it, but she doesn't expect nor want him to be anything other than what he is. As evidenced by the lovely painting she gives him of Percy looking fearsome against his battle with Antaeus. It was such a sight that Percy himself was jarred, but Rachel said he looked good. She was totally fine with his darkside, accepted it, and understood it.

Rachel also has a very positive relationship with things Percy is passionate about. She has a keen sense for environmental conservation as we see her participating in a charity work (actual volunteering) in BoTL and we know how sensitive Percy is on rivers or oceans being unclean.

She also seems to have a great bond with Percy's companions. Like you are telling me Blackjack, who has trauma of his time with being captive on Princess Andromeda under Luke, and who is fiercely loyal to Percy, let Rachel just order him into going to CHB like that. Obviously, Blackjack likes her enough to let her take him without Percy's explicit permission and without informing Percy because he knows his boss cares about her. I don't know how we, as a fandom, moved on from that scene. It's so beautiful that Rachel is able to connect to Blackjack so seamlessly. And how one of Percy's first thoughts is worrying about Rachel's well-being as soon as he finds out.

Don't even get me started on how him, including Nico and Hades in his wish and demanding justice and respect for children of Hades, is what broke the curse on the Oracle. I think Percy knew what Rachel was going to do or what her role was due to him seeing the visions of May Castellan, and don't tell me he didn't include Nico in his wish for that reason as well. And he was still so panicked when Rachel swore the oath to Apollo, despite the curse already being broken.

There's also a point of how they are both very integral part of Olympus and quite above the others in terms of hierarchy. Percy is the twice savior of Olympus. Several gods owe him a favor, and he is the prince of Atlantis. Rachel is the vessel of Spirit of Delphi, a force that has existed before even the gods. The Olympians need her, the demigods need her, and she is under the protection of Zeus himself. The two most important people in the world exempting gods and other immortals are literally them.

This is why it bothers me when people say Perachel is a big what if. Perachel isn't a what-if. It already happened. It simply didn't last. Not because they didn't want to but because the choice was taken from them. But both Percy and Rachel chose to save the world and chose to do the duty expected of them over dooming the world and being in a relationship. Destiny is inherently unjust as it were. The only what if's are what if they chose to defy expectations and rules and got back together anyway.

The Savior of Olympus and the Oracle of Delphi are a perfect match, but fate would not let it be. Perhaps in another world, they would have cared less about the fate of the world or less about defying Olympus. Maybe when Percy becomes immortal, he will finally get a chance to be with Rachel. In my headcanons, that is how it goes. I admit I like the dynamic of the strongest demigod ever and the Oracle herself teaming up. It's not like anyone can top that duo. The power couple that they would have been, the fandom is not ready for it.

Oh my gosh I wrote this so quick. I loved it sm.

This is from something in a previous post I made, where I took the theories I’d seen of Batman being autistic/neurodivergent, and let him and biological child reader relate to each other.

(this will be more Autism/ADHD centered than anything else. I really wanna do one for ASPD later, so lmk if you’re interested in that)

When you first came into Bruce’s life, it was just you with what little belongings you owned.

He helped you settle in, of course, but what he didn’t expect was to see while unpacking your stuff was so many bat-themed objects.

Your little toy Bat, your books, the shirts… he quickly could see what genetics you got from him.

Bruce, as always, got attached quickly. Of course he did. You followed him like a duckling to its mother, carrying that little stuffed toy and getting excited when you saw every bat-themed item in his house. He was such a proud father.

One day, he took you and your siblings to some concert that he’d heard about while visiting the Kents. It ended with the families deciding to meet up and go together.

Everything was going well! Tim and Conner were making bets on something, Damian and Jon were bickering while also stuffing their faces with snacks, Dick was playing cool older brother while Jason was the annoying one, Cas and Steph were betting on Tim and Conner’s betting, and Duke was busy getting stuff at the concession stands.

Bruce had you perched on his hip while talking to Clark and Lois. Jason liked to tease him about how you’re gonna get too big to be carried one day, but he swears that’ll never happen.

The concert starts, he sees all the kids getting excited, and he’s beaming. He’ll never be able to explain how his heart warms when he sees their smiles.

However, the second the first cord of the song starts and the bright lights flash, he feels you tense up. He looked at you a second, assuming you were just surprised or something, but then he sees your hands go to your ears while your face hides in his side, and he knows something’s wrong.

He quickly excuses himself, carrying you into a family bathroom.

He’d settled on the floor and sat you on his lap. Bruce spent a while gently reassuring you and rubbing your back, giving you hugs when/if you needed. After enough time, you’d calmed down enough to say quietly “it’s too loud and bright.”

He’d immediately understood. In fact, he brought himself ear plugs for the concert because he also tends to get overwhelmed with the noise. He felt so bad for not considering that, with how much you’re like him, you’d also share some of his problems with extreme environments.

He’d luckily brought an extra set of earplugs. If you went back in the concert and felt fine after putting them on, he’d just carefully watch you most of the time.

If you were still upset, he’d take you home. Anything to keep his baby from crying. His heart couldn’t take it.

Regular head-cannons:

Dick heard the name(s) and quickly started saying them as well. Eventually, anyone who liked nicknames used them on you

If you DARE to ask Bruce not to call you that as you get older, he’ll never listen. If you say it embarrasses you in front of friends or something, he’ll deliberately say it in front of them. He still thinks it’s cute.

When Alfred met you, he was shocked by how much you reminded him of Bruce. You one day walked in, wearing a tiny bat costume (Dick and Barbara teamed up to choose your clothes that day), and Alfred stared at you for a solid minute before finally finding his voice.

Notable Details from the original "Into The Pit" story (PART 1)

Upon the mill's closure, Oswald's dad works part-time at the deli counter in a store called the Snack Space (a 7-11 equivalent, basically), which requires a red vest as their uniform. Oswald is embarrassed by the fact his dad is wearing the vest as he drops him off at school. Just a neat bit of world-building.

Oswald has a best friend named Ben who moved into the next town over.

Oswald's bullies, including Dylan Cooper, call him "Oswald the Ocelot" after a cartoon character they saw as pre-schoolers, a big pink ocelot named Oswald. Again, more world-building.

Oswald is described as having freckles and a cowlick in the original story.

Oswald has no modern electronics in his home, save for one laptop he shares with his family. His phone is an outdated model he's embarrassed by.

Oswald's teacher, Mrs. Meecham, puts on a movie for her class on the last day of school, which is described as "about a farm with talking animals", "too babyish for a roomful of fifth graders". I'm guessing they might have been watching the animated adaptation of Charlotte's Web... or it could be wishful thinking on my part, since I love that movie.

Oswald has been drawing mechanical animals ("bears, bunnies, and birds") for reasons even he doesn't know, other than lack of anything better to do when he's bored.

Oswald's mom works at the hospital from 12PM to 12AM... yikes.

Oswald's dad can't cook to save his life. If it can't be boiled in water or heated in a microwave, he has to buy his meals... how relatable.

Blue-box macaroni and cheese exists in FNAF, meaning Kraft and its products likely exist, too. Just thought that was funny for some reason.

Oswald's dad squirts ketchup into his mac and cheese. I just think knowing he's the kind of dad who does that is really funny... kinda reminds me of my stepdad's love of ketchup, to be honest.

Other pizzerias that once existed in Oswald's town were Gino's Pizza and Marco's Pizza, both of which closed not long after the mill closed. Both Gino's and Marco's are described as good restaurants, while the food at Jeff's Pizza is described as "decent".

Oswald is into B-grade Japanese horror films, including kaiju movies like Zendrelix vs. Mechazendrelix. Zendrelix is apparently FNAF's answer to Godzilla, making Mechazendrelix an equivalent to Mechagodzilla. They're described like this: "... Zendrelix just looked like a giant dragon thing, but Mechazendrelix reminded him [Oswald] of the mechanical animals he drew when he stripped them of their fur." Zendrelix is also described as being portrayed by "a guy in a rubber suit", solidifying the connection between him and Godzilla.

Oswald and his dad both really love bacon. I just thought that was cute.

When Oswald visits the library, a place he finds "actually kinda fun", he shows interest in a science fiction book from a series, as well as a manga he liked. Based, IMHO.

The library Oswald visits frequently allows homeless people to use their computers and other resources. WE NEED LIBRARIES AND THIS IS EXACTLY ONE REASON WHY!

Oswald's mom, being a nurse, is a bit of a germaphobe and won't let Oswald play in places she considers dirty. A ball pit would be considered one such place.

The pizza Jeff serves comes in huge slices too big for the paper plates they're served on, and very greasy. As someone who was born in NYC and used to eat greasy New York pizza... I think I would have liked eating at Jeff's. Maybe.

Oswald reads a library book while visiting Jeff's Pizza, about "a world where kids with secret powers went to a special school to learn how to fight evil". I wonder how many books that describes...

Oswald plays an online fantasy game at the library that's free to play, but Oswald gets to a point where he can't progress without money. I wonder what game it could have been...

Oswald's dad and mom used to date in high school, often frequenting a roller rink, and are great skaters as a result. Oswald himself can't skate and needs his parents to hold him up.

If you could have written a completely Sam centric episode (ie one was no/basically no Dean like The End is for Sam) what would the concept be and what season would you have it happen in?

hmm! I've never thought about something like this before (something something deancentric show hasn't shown me this is possible) but now a few ideas are coming to mind:

s1/s2 - something calls sam back to stanford. maybe he thinks it's related to the demon, maybe something is going on with one of his friends like in 1x06, or maybe it's just another job but it would be interesting to see sam exploring the remnants of his old life, seeing some of his professors and old friends (because he's not a wanted criminal yet lmao), and remembering things he used to do with jessica :((( this concept could also work in just about any season if he had reason to go back (with less interaction with the public the more wanted criminal he becomes) and the longer it's been I think the more heartbreaking it would be to watch

s7 - I wanna see what SAM was doing during that week and a half referenced in 7x07 when dean was having a normal one without him. if I were in the writer's room, I would have sam trying to control hallucifer, hallucifer who will not shut up about how badly dean wronged him by killing amy and lying about it. a part of sam knows he's right too but isn't it wrong to agree with lucifer? ig because it's a spn episode he could be doing a solo job during this time, but that's not strictly necessary for me. I loved hallucifer as much as the next person, but I think we could have put him to better use than constantly cracking jokes, and that use could be voicing truths about sam and dean's relationship that sam will not let himself voice under ordinary circumstances

s9 - kinda similar to the above idea but s9 was desperately in need of sam's perspective after gadreel, but as we know the writers had little interest in this because it's not dickriding dean (their favorite activity)

the plot could be sam chasing a gadreel lead during dean's two week long (?) pity party away from the bunker, and maybe cas can tag along for my sastiel enjoyers, but it would still be primarily about sam

but let's spend a day with sam in the immediate aftermath! let's see him wake up from nightmares of killing kevin. let's see him need a long moment to remember all that has transpired recently, to convince himself what's real, having a near panic attack. let's see him constantly assaulted by violent flashbacks and memories he can't quite piece together. and because we're already in a fantasy world where the s9 writers have some sympathy for sam, how about some narrative acknowledgment that even though sam thinks finding gadreel is his responsibility, it's really super not!!

I Think Fortnight Is About To Ruin Our Lives…

Hello, lovely people!

I come to you with a possible solution for the recent This Love mystery!

If you've been following this at all...

... you will remember, that there's some funny business going on with the song This Love, featured on the default playlist of the Stationhead app's official Swifties channel. It's usually truncated, but very occasionally plays in full, which can be considered a special, perhaps even meaningful event.

Very recently, this happened:

On April 24th (ET), the full version of This Love played 6 times, before the short version took over again. 

On April 28th (ET)--a Monday, btw-- an alternating pattern between short and long versions began, which would last for a FORTNIGHT (=14 days).

I’m not sure, If I’ve fully solved the riddle, but I’ve found an angle, that I find most compelling, especially in light of other evidence I sourced from this very same playlist.

My main takeaways...

The number 6 is very important. It may indicate June (which also is pride month), but may also link to Reputation TV, OR TS 12, if you add up the 6 accumulated Ls on both sides of the "main event". I’M NOT CLAIMING either. I’m just observing.  

If you look up “Taylor Swift, September 6th”, you won’t find much. On the other hand, if you look up June 9th… Oh, boy!

I'm still a bit new to this whole thing, but I'm thinking things through and I like to structure them. I do it mostly for myself, but why not share it now that the work is done? While researching the different interpretations of Dean and Cas' relationship, as well as the different views within the "shipper wars" that seem to be going on in the supernatural fandom, I came across statements like: "Just would like to point out that no one destiel shipper is a dean girl…". The argument is simple - if you know Dean, you know that he cares about Sam the most. So no one but Sam can fill that vacant spot in his heart. I felt like that wasn't a fair accusation to those whose favorite character is Dean and who share the destiel interpretation. I can't say that I fully share the vision of Cas and Dean's relationship as purely romantic, but I was interested in answering the question for myself as to why Destiel is so popular, if, based on the logic of the above statement, fans should understand that a place in Dean's heart is occupied. In this small diagram (which, of course, cannot cover all the nuances of my and others' thoughts), I wanted to structure for myself how our fan desires are formed regarding the fate of Dean Winchester (during the series or in the post-finale). In the part about Wincest, I write a little about my vision of this ship (although I try to avoid value judgments), but I want to note that I am not fighting with anyone. This is just a small remark that seemed appropriate to me. In the rest, I was more interested in the process of forming our fan expectations and desires.

P.S. In this analysis I do not take into account two issues: 1. For Wincest, the problematic issue for many is that Sam and Dean are brothers. 2. The fact that we have no direct textual confirmation that Dean can be bisexual. These issues are indirectly related to the problematic that I am considering (for example, the fact that many people cannot see Wincest because there is a cultural taboo on incest that we cannot cross, or we consider Dean a reliable narrator about his straight orientation and cannot consider the possibility of his reciprocity with Cas). But this is not the main topic, so I will leave it out.

Let's Reread Commonweal, book 1, chapters 1-5

“They’re sending us a Rust, somebody who goes by Blossom, and Halt.”

When I first read the first sentence, I thought Rust was one part of a Rust hivemind. (format: (a Rust), (Halt), and (someone called Blossom)). I spent book 1 thinking Rust was made out of butterflies, not all of which were necessarily currently in the Creeks. This turns out to break the implied rules about communication speed and being in one place at one time. Is there a reason an independent can’t be in more than one material place* at one point in time? They have the processing power for it. Could be that naively implemented parallel processing is bad for your shape as a person, could be that it’s a bad idea defensively, could be I’m missing something about how the original material body is related to the metaphysical one, could be personal and/or social preference. Probably the third, now that I’m thinking about lag. *meaningfully more than one place at one time, in a way that’d be useful for being the internet passing messages

Not when Independents don’t serve with the Line — there’s five centuries of custom back of that.

Considering how the rest of the books go, this is important context for some of the social stuff and also seems kind of unwise, considering the specialist knowledge that seems likely to be helpful for defeating an invasion. Or are they sent out separately, which seems like a lack of communication for no purpose, or sent out instead of the Line, of which Rust vs. Reems is an example?

These days there’s a Westcreek (dust dry), a West Wetcreek, a Lost Creek (swamp), and Split Creek (on some fixed astrological schedule: fire, blood, venom, beer) in the province of Westcreek. I’m leaving out the rest of the Creeks, plural, the stuff further east. For a place that wasn’t anywhere back in the day, stuff happened — Split Creek’s not a little working. Despite that evidence of past activity, Westcreek Town, Westcreek the province, West Wetcreek the watershed, the whole of the Creeks, is full of people who claim nothing happens here.

Notetaking: Westcreek is a province. “nothing happens here”, coming back from book 5, seems like part dramatic irony and part lurking long-term planning.

There’s a lot of Independents these days, sorcerers good enough that the basic deal — the Line don’t extinguish them, and in return they show up for five years in fifty and do subtle clever things to make the Commonweal work better, besides staying out of trouble and politics — applies. That’s the List, the sorcerers good enough to make themselves ageless by a means the rest of us will tolerate. But the List contains the Short List, too. Parliament gives it a polite name, but what it means is, “if this one causes trouble, send a battalion”. There’s fifty-odd names on the Short List, out of the couple thousand on the List as a whole.

Notetaking: couple thousand Independents in the Commonweal. “by a means the rest of us will tolerate” seems a bit misleading this early on, implying lich-adjacent fantasy tropes instead of the actual trials involved, though “the rest of us” isn’t technically an incorrect description of the Shape of Peace.

Out of the Short List there’s the first page; no-one tries to give it a polite name or come up with some reason for it. It’s a list of twelve names, all them older than the Commonweal. Halt’s name is the first of that dozen, by any measure: knowledge, terror, or simple grim seniority. … Rust’s name is the fourth name of that dozen, and Rust and Halt do not get on.

For as loudly as the Commonweal tries to tell its all-are-equal story, it’s interesting in retrospect how much of this character introduction is a ranked list. It’s a bit of a character flavor thing and a bit of a ‘the first chapter of the first book does need some amount of exposition’ thing and a bit that the Commonweal hasn’t managed to work all of the might-makes-right flavor out of its social fabric.

If any among the Twelve causes trouble, the standing orders are to send nothing less than a full brigade in full array. That might be overkill: the Foremost, Laurel and the Foremost, back in the day, took down everybody on the first page of the Short List, and everybody else with the Power and pretensions of lordship, and the Foremost mostly weren’t what would muster as a full battalion these days.

The beginning of my first-read journey along “wait, the Foremost was who? Wait, the Foremost was what?”

Anyone who has been in The City Of Peace for any length of time would know that. Rust and Halt may stay out of politics — they’re both known for being abrupt about it — but if you tell one of the terrors of the earth to solve a problem, you’re telling them to make policy. They don’t agree about policy and they’ve been writing snarky articles at each other in the scholarly journals for so long that the earliest ones were two major vowel shifts ago.

Hmm. Holding up the teatime strategy book next to Rust vs. Reems (let some go?) in comparison. Interesting. “Two major vowel shifts ago”: do some Independents usually speak variously old-fashionedly / formally or is that not how acting socially usually shakes out? Wake’s pattern of speech sure is something.

Either someone’s decided that Split Creek desperately needed plugging about a hundred years ago, or someone else is afraid that Halt and Rust’s long feud is soon to have a failure of decorum and believes the devastated landscape ought to be far away from the City of Peace.

Notetaking: vibes about Commonweal policy-making and Commonweal attitude towards Independents. Politics! Establish a level of ruthlessness and danger for the Commonweal and Independents.

To look at, it’s eyes front. Every single trooper has enough of a grip on the standard that the company, while by no means arrayed for war, is keeping a good eye all round. Really all round, which is, by long tradition, entirely acceptable, or half of entirely respectable, anyway; the other half is not having it show in the drill when something unusual happens.

“Really all round”: phrases that don’t make sense the first time through. Eyes in the back of your head indeed.

let even the Territorial Line make a point of being polite.

Did we lose the Regular/Territorial Line distinction in the Commonweal split, or was I reading too fast?

We’ve got Rust, all right. Rust’s horse looks good and plain and honest, too, and it might have been. It might still be; Rust has been riding the ghost of that horse since there are records, and if anyone knows how that works, they’re not saying.

As they say in glowlarion, every archmage can do three impossible things. Ghosts aren’t supposed to be able to be called up after more than three days or stick around not fading indefinitely, even in the Line’s standards(?).

Handing back the warrant sticks gives me a moment to grab some focus, the personal kind that sends your sense of self high and quivering out of your body. There’s a vast gulf between “correct” and “safe”.

? Missing some context here for the second sentence. Not quite connecting focus, correct, and safe.

Halt is also apparently incapable of sitting down for any length of time without knitting.

Credit to a book 3 let's read on brokenforums: in knitting you cast on to start and cast off to finish. Puns, my beloathed.

I kept this explanation in mind throughout book 2 and came out almost as confused as I started, though in different directions.

“Your arm knows.” Spine, and there are Independents who would know that.

? Is this “your spine knows”, is spine used as a curse, secret third thing? Someone uses “Fire, where’s the brigade …?” later, for curse usage comparison. Spine isn’t used like this again in book 1.

Halt lets the needles say “Oh, that kind of catch”.

Love it when you can’t quite be sure this isn’t a literal description.

misc. notetaking: four platoons = 1 company = 80 guys; nine files per platoon? Someone’s done better math about this, I’ll settle for rounding to significant digits. Eventually I want context for the training casualties in book 5.

Eustace stops well back of the artillery line, lies down, and starts chewing away on an eel-tree. Halt’s back up in the howdah, knitting away with apparent total unconcern for either the game of catch or the shrieking as Eustace toasts the fangy parts of the tree, which are trying to eat back. Various bits of notice of this slide through the standard while the platoons switch places, and there’s a thread of general approval coming back. Eustace’s kind will be welcome in the Creeks forever if they eat eel-tree.

Things I didn’t notice the first time around: what qualifies as weeds around here. Not much context for exactly how much of a deathplanet this is in the first book.

Halt’s comprehensive definition [of innocence] — never consumed a human soul, never slaked wrath by wide killing, and, oh yes, never coerced a bound demon into a shape empty of all but pain — was not provided to the matrons. Even more fortunately, Halt’s oddly wistful expression was not observed by any townsfolk at all. The true list is longer, and gets into strange technical questions of removal of the will and self; it’s quite all right, apparently, to send someone quietly to sleep in the middle of attacking you. Overriding the will in lesser actual degree to make them more willing to obey is not.

“slaked wrath by wide killing” is a beautiful phrase. Definitions about magic! Shiny!

Hmm. I’ll remember this as I keep rereading, though we rarely see a ““normal”” Independent and even more rarely see them in normal social contexts.

Not entirely against such doings, the Creeks as a people and an area use a lot of focus-tools, but that doesn’t count, socially. This would, will.

ourgh okay so, i really enjoy headcanoning her as transfem and using she/they pronouns, you can see this featured in teh background of my published works and is going ot be more explicitely addressed in a hopefully upcoming fic im working on thats rewriting the chapter red letter day.

i think she is a fairly talented artist, particularly through the rise of street art as a form of minor rebellion which i feel in general is pretty popular among resistance members and those of rebellious nature even if they dont have ties to the resistance proper, art being a strong feature of humanity etcetc. and obviously those skills require an underlying understanding of drawing, so when shes not out and about doing something, she takes a break and will doodle if she can to wind down. also given that shes mechanically and engineeringly minded, i imagine being able to create blueprints requires the ability to render ideas out to some degree, so shes probably particularly good at geometric and less organic shapes.

This also leads me to imagine that shed probably enjoy media with a lot of mechas, i think shed find it really interesting and all the mechanics of the robots fascinating to study,

and on a related note, i think shed be into cars really hard, nascar would delight her, she clearly loves the muscle car and going fast, and the culture of putting together cars to be in working order, but i imagine FAST, develops anew the culture of hot rodding, which she would be good at seeing as she was the one who worked on the buggy we use in hl2 during highway 17,

On a more emotional note, looking at Alyx's interpersonal relationships and habits, and extrapolating based on a slightly more grounded interpretation of the world of half life 2 from my perspective, i imagine Alyx develops attachments to people fairly quickly but they can be also fairly shallow. I imagine that people would cycle in and out of your life quickly, whether they get killed, are forcibly moved away or worse, building friendships with others and getting along with them are integral to feeling sane, so being able to be personable is a skill Alyx is really good at, but on the flip side, getting too attached can end up hurting you a lot, so it to me makes me imagine that keeping distance emotionally can prevent harm down the road, lots of friends but no Friends. However, those that alyx considers herself close to (read: eli, kleiner, barney, magnusson, and eventually gordon) is obviously ride or die. and she is fiercely protective of them because you have to be in this world. Thus, new people in her life and near her circle of family, set her on edge and even if shes being friendly, is ready to put herself between those who arent safe and those she cares about.

I think she also struggles with feeling overly responsible for those around her, there are so many things that go wrong, and she wants to help and sees her father adn kleiner struggle so often, even wehn she was young, seeing them struggle even as they tried to hide it affected her badly, as is often the case with children, so now as an adult, she has a habit of overworking herself and pushing past her discomfort to help others,

alyx was around 4 years old at teh time of the rescas, which makes me imagine she doesnt remember a lot of it, a few key moments, teh facility first shuddering while she was at the on site preschool, the lights going out, anda few other key moments on her escape from the facility with eli, finding kleiner,

i enjoy the headcanon that barney taught her how to shoot,

for kicks based on my own experience playing half life alyx and struggling to focus on close items plus not being able to render higher detail with my pc, i think alyx is farsighted, and probably needs reading glasses at the least

💻🍎Adding the latest expansion packs and stuff packs for The Sims 2 to The Sims 2 Super Collection on macOS

About six months ago, I posted in a Discord group dedicated to the beta version of The Sims 2 about a discovery I made, but since that server has been move into read only mode, I’d like to share it here—along with some new details.

My discovery is related to The Sims 2: Super Collection — the macOS edition. It includes expansions up to Bon Voyage and several stuff packs: Happy Holiday Stuff, Family Fun Stuff, and Glamour Life Stuff. The remaining DLCs were never released on macOS, because EA and Aspyr had a contract to release only a fixed number of expansions. By the time Bon Voyage was out, all obligations (9 DLCs) were fulfilled, and EA didn’t extend the contract for the remaining packs.

As a result, Super Collection is considered quite limited. Moreover, it lacks support for the Russian language. Still, I must give Aspyr credit for making it 64-bit and continuing to support and update it.

I decided to dig into the game files, take a closer look at how things are structured, and try to bring back the missing expansions and stuff packs.

So, in The Sims™ 2: Super Collection.app/Contents, the most interesting folders are MacOS, which contains the executables (the main one is called Sims2XP_Exe), and Assets, which is structured similarly to the root folder of the Windows version (with TSData and Expansion Packs).

Each expansion or stuff pack has its own TSData folder, just like in Ultimate Collection (UC), Legacy Edition, and a Sims.plist file.

Sims.plist is kind of a mini-registry analog for macOS. It’s used to link the DLCs. Here's what it looks like:

The TSProductIndex corresponds to the release order of the DLCs. I discovered that:

University — 1

Nightlife — 2

Open for Business — 3

Family Fun Stuff — 4

Glamour Life Stuff — 5

Pets — 6

Seasons — 7

Bon Voyage — 10 (!)

It seems that Aspyr at some point planned to port Happy Holiday Stuff and H&M Stuff to macOS, as they reserved indexes 8 and 9 and assigned 10 to Bon Voyage! I’ve seen unofficial ports of these and even all the remaining stuff packs up to IKEA (since they’re all based on Open for Business), but they don’t add CAS items like clothing or hairstyles.

The same thing happens if you replace Happy Holiday or H&M with Teen Style, Kitchen & Bath, or IKEA.

But you can only add two packs this way, since only indexes 8 and 9 are reserved. If you add Teen Style, Kitchen & Bath, and IKEA and assign all of them index 9 in their .plist, the game picks Teen Style and ignores the others. Additionally, only wall and floor textures will load—no objects or CAS items.

Okay, so what if I try to add the final expansions and Mansion & Garden Stuff, which updated the game engine, by using a TSProductIndex higher than 10? That’s when a new issue appears: the game performs an integer check. If I set it to 11 or higher, the game won’t launch and shows this error: TSProductIndex=>10

And what if I assign index 10 to Apartment Life and try to run the game? Then I get this error:

But there were major UI glitches. The game thought all DLCs were installed and showed this:

I couldn’t load families or create a Sim. UI elements from expansions beyond Bon Voyage didn’t work. They were clickable but showed nothing. It’s like the game didn’t know what to do with them.

I believe this is because the executable is from Bon Voyage and needs to be updated to support FreeTime and Apartment Life code.

So, at this stage of my discovery, it’s possible to restore at least two stuff packs.

What about other languages? Aspyr claims only English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Japanese are supported. But in the game files — specifically in TSData/Res/Locale — there are more language folders, just like in the multilingual Windows version. Surely, there’s a trick to enable them...

And yes — there is! I found a guide on SimsWiki about changing the language for different Sims versions (Changing the game language). For macOS, it suggests using the following Terminal command:

That didn’t work for me, so I modified the command like this:

And the game switched to Russian! The only problem was that Cyrillic characters weren’t displayed—just blank text. So I replaced the fonts in Super Collection with those from the base UC game, located in <Base Game>/TSData/Res/UI/Fonts, and... the game now runs fully in Russian!

Ignore the untranslated Pleasantview — I entered that neighborhood before switching the language. It’s also necessary to replace the Center, Downtown, and university template files, or else they’ll stay in English. This issue also exists in UC and Legacy Edition and is resolved in a similar way.

Interestingly, when creating Downtown or the shopping district, the game shows the Double Deluxe logo instead of the localized Business or Nightlife icons:

So, at this point, it’s already possible to play The Sims 2 on macOS entirely in Russian (with some workarounds like launching it through Terminal) and with two stuff packs, up to Mansion & Garden Stuff.

Now, if only we could figure out how to reserve additional values in TSProductIndex — then we could potentially get all stuff packs based on Open for Business at the very least, and at best, a fully working "Ultimate Collection" on macOS.

what are your thoughts on Sam's seizures? the demon detox one was like a withdrawal case but the others..like when he got back his soul, and also that time in the ambulance, would you consider them semi-supernatural seizures? do you think sam is epileptic? It's a headcanon I like.

i've posted about how intriguing it is that sam was a regular seizure haver for a few seasons before and although i do like the epileptic!sam headcanon, i prefer to relate sam's seizures to being psychogenic than relating to a non-canon underlying disorder like epilepsy mainly because it's more interesting to me to think of sam's seizures as directly correlating with the events that trigger them both in a major character conflict encapsulated moment kind of way as well as an action -> reaction kind of way.

so like taking his 4.21 panic room demon blood detox as an example: sam's entire season four arc centres around using his abilities, an invariable part of him that represents both taken autonomy and his Otherness in his family, hunting, and his idea of normalcy, in a way that facilities agency for some perceivable good while also crossing boundaries within the dynamic of his and dean's relationship, the dichotomy of monstrosity, and even his patriarchal role in an attempt at independence (also relating to his addiction). the demon detox scene represents every facet of how sam's monstrosity represents these parts of his character; the characters he hallucinates represents these facets in different ways. his seizure is an extension of this in a more direct way—the idea of sam's inability/struggle to fit within his role within these structures mentioned is, i think, the foundation of his character and being forcibly made to quit his addiction, an addiction related to an invariable aspect of his being, relating greatly to multiple parts of what the foundation of his character represents (as well as his own autonomy) is just being further represented within something as (non-)physical as a seizure.

the same can be said about 6.13 and 6.22 sam. 6.13 sam has had his autonomy violated twice-fold (soulless!sam's and sam's) and he's actively attempting to atone for every aspect of his non-role that soulless!sam breached and for every decision he didn't make but is actively violating him as well as his victims while also being restricted by dean and dean's decision to resoul him. his seizure represents this within something that is (non-)physical. 6.22 sam has has his wall broken in a way that reaffirms his lack of autonomy in several ways: his wall was broken by cas to keep dean preoccupied, the wall exists against his will, he doesn't even remember the ordeal of having his wall broken, and he's a metaphysical prisoner within his body. sam is quite literally having to reclaim his body from himself by himself and (almost) against his will; his seizure represents this within something that is (non-)physical.

in 7.03, it's basically an extension of 6.22, but with the added aspect of both sam's established psychosis and sam's relationship with hallucifer. his conflict with his autonomy relates to the struggle within his relationship with reality and how conflated it is with his relationship with lucifer; by 7.03 his reality is in the process of being re-established as existing synonymously with his and dean's relationship, perpetuating the push and pull between dean-sam, lucifer-sam and sam's reality; his autonomous reality has been slipping through his fingers (in a similar way to 3.11, which is a connection i love to make). his seizure represents his struggle within something that is (non-)physical.

it's a metaphor and symbol, basically and there's just more canon to think about in the context of this perspective than it is from an epileptic!sam, which you'd have to build outside of canon. the latter is still fun though, in the same way that thinking about sam as schizophrenic, autistic, or having ptsd (headcanons that i do feel relatively strongly about) is fun.

If you've been following me for a while you're certainly aware that I openly despise love triangles in fiction because they're almost always executed in a way that's completely unappealing to my personal taste and, consequently, perceived by the audience in a way that's invariably flat and flavorless to me.

For instance in Supernatural, whether you like/ship them or not, there are two established love triangles: Dean/Benny/Cas and Dean/Crowley/Cas. In both cases the apex of the triangle is considered to be, as far as I've seen, Dean and this is one of the reasons why these two triangles are boring to me. The way I personally see it (and that makes love triangles more bearable to me) is to consider the perceived apex's favourite as the real, hidden apex. In these examples, then, the real apex is actually Cas.

The way I see it, love triangles can be interesting if ALL power dynamics are explored. In the case of Dean and Benny it's so clear that it's Dean who holds all the power in the relationship because Benny is written like Dean's ideal&perfect&amazing partner that does everything Dean wants and asks for. As far as Dean and Crowley are concerned, things are different because Crowley is, initially, a total predator and a scheming abuser towards Dean until they made him discover "the power of love" that supposedly erase all the harm that was done before. Eventually, then, Dean holds way more power than Crowley in their relationship and, from beloved Juliet the hellhound's stand-in, Dean becomes Crowley's master. Both Benny and Crowley, however, "lose" the battle without even starting it because they're positioned as perfect brother/partner and fun brother/father's figures, respectively, while Dean and Cas' relationship is interesting because Dean seems to be way more interested in a third type of relationship, aka that with his best friend.

The thing is that in both these scenarios the one who really holds all the power is Cas. He literally doesn't need to do or say anything and Dean would "choose" him anyway. And viceversa with Dean (in different cases than these ones, though, in Dean's case the "third wheel" in his relationship with Cas is Heaven which, admittedly, is much worse than what Cas has to face). The power dynamics between Dean and Cas is just much more interesting than the other two because it's like a seesaw, it's always about them even when other people are involved. They're each other's best friend and it's very, very difficult to compete with that because (and I think Supernatural did very well in this respect) "best friendship" is not "just" about support and love. There's also antagonism and eroticism and everything that a non-threatening, charming, desired relationship with the Other entails. It is indeed magnetic and it's at its best when it's described as a polarity unless, I think, the third or fourth party chiming in is "powerful" enough to destabilize the connection.

And this is precisely why I don't care for these love triangles. In Dean/Benny/Cas case it's just so obvious that the moment Cas would eventually come knocking on Dean's metaphorical door no ideal&perfect&amazing partner could compete. I could've been interested if they gave more space to Cas and Benny's relationship: give me jealousy or competition or curiosity even, whatever, but give me some spice. To me it wasn't spicy enough so the love triangle feels bland to me (the actors played very well, I'm not talking about perfomances here, I'm talking about what we actually get to see on the screen).

The Dean/Crowley/Cas is potentially veeeery good because Crowley and Cas have history and if they had showed a little bit of that the triangle could've been interesting to me. In other words, I guess what I'm saying is that I don't like these love triangles because there isn't enough Cas&third party-related dynamics in them and, the way I personally see it, he was the real, hidden apex in both cases. Things would've been just much more savoury to me if that was actually showed (I believe it was implicitly showed because Cas' appearance/disappearance in Dean's life is what starts/ends these triangles but, like, the whole point is that I needed more screentime with Cas and Benny and Cas and Crowley for the trope to be interesting. To me).

Hot Spot/Silverbolt

This one is honestly really plausible. They feel like a good slow burn candidate; like, if they started dating, it would probably be after months or years of being close friends who originally bonded over being gestalt leaders, but started sharing more and more parts of their lives with each other. By the time they started dating it would feel like nothing really changed much, they just have more going on between them.

The only thing I really worry about between them is some specific headcanon stuff that I have that I don't know if other people ever write. I tend to write Silverbolt like he worries a lot about whether or not his gestalt is as good at being a combiner as the Protectobots. Like almost on a subconscious level, he wonders a lot about what Hot Spot is doing to keep his teammates working together, and what they're doing that makes combining easier. I think if he spoke up about it they'd be able to work through it. But I think that would be hard for Silverbolt. He's kinda used to not talking about his fear of heights every time he flies already, I think that would bleed over into other stuff. Maybe Hot Spot can be someone he opens up to? Or maybe it would be harder to open up directly to him.

Skydive/Rewind

I'm really glad I looked at Rewind's tfwiki page. I was imagining him a lot more like IDW Rewind, because I've only really seen him a couple of times in Headmasters (and haven't seen a lot of G1 S3). I was really worried about the age difference, because not only is IDW Rewind a lot older than Skydive, he's got... his own things he's working through that Skydive absolutely would not be able to help with, but would totally try to. But this is the G1 timeline. Blaster doesn't really have casettes until TFTM, so if anything Rewind is probably the younger one, with an age difference that's almost negligible for cybertronians. Also the formatting of his tfwiki page is making me crack up.

I don't know if they're compatible romantically, but you're right, I think they would be inseparable.

Slingshot/Sunstreaker

I don't know how I feel about shipping the Aerialbots with mechs this much older than them. Like I think they'd be great friends in G1, but I don't see them as romantic because it weirds me out.

I was gonna say this could work in the Cybertron games' timeline because they'd be a more similar age, but neither of them appear in those games at all. Sideswipe is in WFC, as is Air Raid and Silverbolt, but Sunny and Slingshot themselves don't make an appearance.

I don't know enough about the IDW comics to comment on if they could be a thing there. But honestly as long as they don't have an age difference larger than like, the history of human civilization, I'm not super against it.

Air Raid/Blades

I don't totally see it but I don't not see it.

The main reason I don't see it is because I really think Air Raid wouldn't want to spend enough time with Blades to be in a relationship with him. I think they'd play video games together sometimes, but I don't think he'd really enjoy fighting alongside Blades. He doesn't have Blades's violent streak. He likes fighting because it's a game he can win, not because he likes violence.

Look, you guys have seen dogfights in movies, at least, right? There's a lot of tactics, but when you actually have the kill on someone, they go down pretty fast. That's what I think Air Raid's style of fighting is getting at. He's not in it to get his hands dirty or to watch people die, he's in it because he likes winning and he's a kid in a warzone.

I think Blades would see that from the outside and think Air Raid is playing with his prey and that they have a lot of the same stuff going on, but Air Raid would be like. No lol. You're insane I'm normal. (<- child soldier syndrome)

If they were in a relationship, it could be really fun for both of them. But the breakup would be HORRIBLE.

I see a lot of people ship Blades with Slingshot. I think the reason that's a more popular pairing is because honestly, I think Slingshot's standards are lower. He's mostly in it because the mutual jabbing at each other, physical fights, etc are fun for him. But there's also this part of him that genuinely thinks he can't do better.
