Fishtober Day 8 - Firefish

Firefish are a genus of dartfish. The first picture I used is of a Fire Goby, which are native to the Indo-Pacific oceans in coral reefs. Their name comes from their orange-red body, though other fish from the same genus can be other colours!!

Their brighter relatives, the Elegant Firefish have bright red and purple fins. They live in the West Indo-Pacific and eat zooplankton. Plus they hide in holes when threatened. They don't fight if they have enough room so they're good aquarium pets! Plusss they're very disease resistant.

絲鰭線塘鱧−海洋生物系列059

珊瑚礁海域中最美的身影之一！本身就擁有鮮豔的色彩，因此在著色上關於顏色倒是很好選擇。只是牠的眼睛外觀上，有塊藍色或紫色類似眼瞼的東西遮住部分眼球，這讓我畫的時候一直考慮要不要將這構造表現出來。因為這必須在眼睛的上半部位增加一條線，而這條線及這個位置剛好會影響到臉部的表情，通常是會讓表情看起來會變得有點兇。只是絲鰭線塘鱧是美麗珊瑚礁海域裡的小魚，情感上生活在這裡應該是非常歡樂的感覺。不過在幾經嘗試後，我決定讓絲鰭線塘鱧不平凡一點好了，就是在眼睛多畫了一條線。如此一來，放棄了走可愛及具親和力的路線，表情反而變成有點生氣、有點鄙視人又帶點個性的死樣子。雖然和過去多數作品不同，但事後來看感覺是另有風情。（July 17, 2021）

Ranpo seeing the shadow Fukuzawa casts and thinking he's some kind of mermaid angel, then discovering he's just as pretty up close. Fukuzawa baffled by this little fish?? That's following him around??? And saying stuff about being a pair or something?

Pokemon Sun and Moon Mermaid AU

If SWSH gets fairies, SUMO gets mermaids. This AU is heavily inspired by and based off the Sierra adventure game, “Ecoquest: The Search for Cetus”. 

Plot 

Unbeknownst to many, there is a kingdom under the sea known as Tapulia Living there are mermaids and mermen who are able to transform into their animal form to hide from humans (and get food). 

The kingdom has lived in peace and prosperity, all the pollution caused by Skull Industries was neutralized by the king, Kukui. However, the king disappeared one day, leaving the kingdom to suffer. 

Worst is that a fellow Tapulian, known as Lusamine, had her mind altered by the pollution, causing her, along with a few others to become violent and act solely on instinct. Now she haunts the kingdoms, stalking and hunting her prey. Her children, Gladion and Lillie were able to escape, now searching for a way to stop their mother’s wrath. 

Hau, a dolphin merman, in his animal form, was trying to look for his missing grandfather and King Kukui. However, during his search, he ends up getting trapped in a driftnet and becomes pretty injured. Fortunately, members of the Nether Agency, a group of people aiming to stop pollution all around Alola and help animals in need rescue him and take him to their facility to heal. 

Leia (my SUMO protag), has just moved to Alola from Kanto. Her mother is of the head ecologists of the Nether Agency, the two moved to Alola so she could be closer to her work. She befriends the injured dolphin, who accidentally shows his true form. She then releases him back to the sea to find his king and grandfather. 

Almost a week later, he comes back to Leia, requesting help from her. She agrees to help him, and so, the two set off to save the kingdom, making new friends and new enemies along the way.

Burnet- Basking shark (second largest shark next to the whale shark, and also only eat plankton like the whale shark) 

Ilima- Sea otter (as sea otters are pretty intelligent, also sea otters remind me of Yungoos just a tiny bit)

Lana- Pacific sardine (which is what Wishiwashi is based off)

Mallow- Grass carp 

Kiawe- Fire goby (aka the firefish or fire dartfish) 

Sophocles- Electric eel 

Acerola- Ghost angelfish

Mina- Pink flapjack octopus 

Hala- Hawaiian monk seal

Olivia- Lobster (because Lobster claws are tough and hard, just like rocks)

Nanu- Siamese fighting fish (specifically a black and red one)

Hapu- Brown seahorse

Wicke- Beluga whale

Faba- Sturgeon

[Guzma is still human in this AU, being the boss of Skull Industries, however if he was a merman, he would be a killer whale aka an Orca whale]

Description:

"The gills of an Embreefin glow in the dark, allowing them to better navigate the dark volcanic reefs they frequent. When attacking, their fire-like fins flare up a brilliant violet color. Surprisingly, they swim much faster in cold water."

Embreefin's name is derived from three words: EMBER, REEF, and FIN. The elongated sensory fin on its head references lit matches.

Embreefin's overall design is inspired by the elegant firefish, a species of dartfish native to reefs in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean. A fiery fish was difficult to manage at first, since I didnt want to just slap fire on a fish and be done with it, but then I discovered dartfish! I originally was going to make a dartfish with an arrow-like shape, but then I stumbled upon the elegant firefish and the design was so interesting I couldnt lose it. The flame-like fins on Embreefin bring out the idea of a flaming fish and its namesake inspiration of the firefish. The elegant firefish is also called the purple firefish, which is why I chose to describe the fins as turning purple when attacking!
