"Damien Lehfeldt on How Team USA Is Using Analytics to Get an Edge"
"
EPISODE SUMMARY
Our guest is Damien Lehfeldt, known on Instagram and elsewhere as "The Fencing Coach" but also the strategy and data lead for the Team USA national epee team. We chatted with him about the analytics behind Team USA's drive for gold.
EPISODE NOTES
In this episode of First to 15, we're joined by "The Fencing Coach" himself, Damien Lehfeldt.
Damien has been writing The Fencing Coach blog since 2012. That’s the same year he helped coach Team USA’s Suzanne Stetinius to the London Olympics in Modern Pentathlon. He’s now a coach at Nova Fencing Club in Virginia.
Damien is a former epee fencer who had a successful career at Brandeis University, where he graduated in 2009, and he later won gold in the men’s epee team event at the 2012 North American Cup.
On top of all that, he’s the strategy and data lead for the Team USA national epee team. We’re going to talk about what that means and more in today’s episode.

"In each episode, we’ll talk to someone interesting within the fencing world, including young fencers just learning the sport, coaches, experts from outside of fencing, fencing parents, referees, Olympians and Paralympians, and many more. Ready? Set? Fence!"
So while this podcast is obviously geared directly towards olympic fencers there's still some elements that historical fencers may find useful. I do doubt a regular hema club, let alone a single person has the same resources as a national olympic fencing team, especially one like USA's national team, however looking into dartfish may still prove useful to hema folks in many places. If nothing else trying to follow how the knowledge gets used by olympians can provide us in lessons on certain seemingly irrelevant parts of our fencing to our general 'game plans' when fighting.

This is amazing!
Imagine if the show was geared towards an old enough audience that they could parody "M" by having Slappy eating sapient anchovies or jellyfish or something. Not as bad as what Hans did in the real movie, but still murder.
Mama Krabbs: "I 'seen the toughest thugs go tender when they see a cute little jellyfish. When they catch that jellyfish killer, they'll have his backside mounted on a wall!"

Some storyboards for Legend of the Lost Bathroom! Written by Jacob Fleisher, Nora Meek, and Zoë Moss, and directed by Tim Prendergast!
This episode was a challenge, but as much fun of a challenge as doing an episode entirely centered around literal bathroom humor can be--which is to say, VERY fun! The Sponge fan and historian in me is VERY excited knowing I got to get my hands on King Neptune (and the other Neptune's crown!)!! What an honor! I learned so much about animation (particularly arcs!!) and staging in this one. I loved getting to experiment with the difference in scale between Pat/Squidina and Neptune and, conversely, Patrick and the Dartfish family! (poor guys).
Bonus boards that were cut for time and continuity, but I still like 'em!

Fishtober Day 8 - Firefish
Check out the creator! ^ [@/fishiscrazy]

Firefish are a genus of dartfish. The first picture I used is of a Fire Goby, which are native to the Indo-Pacific oceans in coral reefs. Their name comes from their orange-red body, though other fish from the same genus can be other colours!!
Their brighter relatives, the Elegant Firefish have bright red and purple fins. They live in the West Indo-Pacific and eat zooplankton. Plus they hide in holes when threatened. They don't fight if they have enough room so they're good aquarium pets! Plusss they're very disease resistant.
Sorry I know the pictures are a little boring today but I don't have the energy to make a pretty collage - -""

An Exciting Evolution in the UAE Sports Industry: Middlesex University Dubai’s New Sport Performance Analysis Programme
Use adaptable data analysis techniques to master the art of sport development at an elite level

The UAE has witnessed significant growth in the sports sector, with an emphasis on health and wellbeing being placed within the nation's cultural and economic landscape. The UAE won their first Olympic medal in 2004 and continue to compete at a global level, with 14 incredible athletes representing the UAE at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. A report by FootballCo determined that those in the Middle East were inspired by the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, increasing interest in the sport of football and specifically the individual players.
Athletes competing at an elite level don’t get there on their own. Years of training in fitness and technique propel them to greater heights, but the often-overlooked skill of data analysis is what makes the ultimate difference to their overall development and athletic performance.
With a significant growth in interest within the sports industry in the UAE, sports teams, coaches, personal trainers, and sports professionals need to get serious about their sport performance analysis. Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai has just launched a new programme at Master’s level that changes the game of elite sporting in the UAE and beyond.
MSc Sport Performance Analysis New for September 2024 Intake
The UAE’s sports industry’s evolution is driven by substantial investments in infrastructure and community engagement. The National Sports Strategy 2031 aims to increase the participation rate in diverse sports to 71%, develop sports professionals, and enhance regulations governing the sports sector. The UAE Vision 2071 emphasises the quality of sports, recognising its role in cultivating the skills of the next generation and enabling them to represent the UAE on international platforms.
MDX Dubai has always embraced a culture of fitness, with 11 sports teams within the university including basketball, football, athletics, badminton and volleyball. With the launch of the new programme MSc Sport Performance Analysis, the University reaffirms its commitment to providing education tailored to growing industry needs.

The MSc in Sports Performance Analysis at Middlesex University Dubai offers a hands-on curriculum that blends practical with theory. Students are exposed to the latest software such as Sportscode and Dartfish, developing expertise in techniques and procedures relevant to performance analysis. The programme includes a research project component, equipping students with the skills needed for research-based careers and further PhD studies.
What is Sports Performance Analysis?
Performance analysis is used in a wide range of sports, including football, basketball, tennis, cricket, rugby, and hockey… almost any professional sport you can think of! Sports performance analysis is key for enhancing athletic performance and achieving excellence in competitive sports. By collecting, analysing, and interpreting data related to sporting events and individual athlete performances, performance analysts provide objective feedback and valuable insights. This information helps athletes, coaches, and support staff optimise training strategies, improve tactical decisions, and enhance overall performance. The role of performance analysis is key to identifying strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement, ultimately helping athletes and teams reach their full potential.
Career-Led Education and Student Support
The career-led education approach in the Sports Performance Analysis programme at Middlesex University Dubai guarantees that the students are not only learning theoretical aspects but also gaining practical experience that can be used in their future careers. The programme includes modules on data analysis and visualisation skills, enabling students to manage and interpret complex datasets. By learning to visualise data using various software packages, students can provide actionable insights to coaches and athletes, contributing to their success on and off the field.
Graduates of the MSc in Sports Performance Analysis are well-prepared for a variety of career paths and roles, including as performance analysts, sports scientists, coaches, sports technology consultants, and data analysts. The programme's focus on data analytics and AI skills also opens doors to broader positions in business and technology. This degree provides a versatile and future-proof qualification that empowers graduates to excel in diverse sectors. Graduates will also be capable of establishing their own consulting business or progressing to additional study or research.
Dr Krishnadas, Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department, said:
“With the launch of the pioneering MSc in Sport Performance Analysis, Middlesex University Dubai is transforming the landscape of what can be achieved in professional and elite sport management and analytics in the UAE. An underrated pipefish
Doryrhamphus excisus, the bluestreak or bluestripe pipefish, is probably the most widely traded pipefish in the saltwater aquarium trade, iwhen one arbitrarily excludes Hippocampus, the seahorses. D. excisus is at most 7 centimeters, or 3 inches long, making it a popular resident of quiet "nano" tanks. In the wild, it is native to the Indo-Pacific region, as are most marine aquarium imports. It is native from the Persian Gulf and East Africa, all the way to the Eastern Pacific.
This species inhabits crevices on the reef, into which it retreats when alarmed. It is a habitat generalist, and observations are recorded from lagoons, reef flats, reef slopes and walls, channels, and coral gutters. This hardy pipefish can even survive in the harsh, unstable environments of intertidal pools. Specifically it belongs to the clade named flagtail pipefishes, which evolved to hover in the water column, rather than perch or crawl. Members of this clade are easily identifiable by this habit, and by their well developed caudal fin, that allows them a burst of speed.
This burst of speed enables them to better compete for floating food as it passes, than are other syngnathids, when they are maintained among other, faster swimming and active fishes. Although it is reccommended a watch must still be kept, tI ensure that the pipefish receives enough food. Its natural diet has a microcrustacean base, and these are inhaled from the water column, known as zooplanktivory, or from the skins of other fishes. For this species is one of those fishes, that sets up cleaning stations, and is approached by other fishes to remove their problem of ectoparasitic crustaceans.
In the aquarium, D. excisus is a beautiful and peaceful fish. It will set up a small territory around a suitably sized crevice or cave in the rockwork, then hover there in view of the aquarist. D. excisus is rarely bothered by other fishes, unless they have predatory intent, and they do not themselves bother dissimilar fish species. When more agile zooplanktivores share their aquarium, there is a risk that the pipefish may not eat enough food, but I have maintained them with such fishes as Chromis, Chrysiptera, and dartfishes. These little pipefish are monogamous and, exactly like all other pipefishes, it is actually the male that has a genuine pregnancy in his pouch.
