Starter for @lesbian-megurine!
The day in which Sanae and she met at the casino...Miku would've ended up running to leave the place, to sit somewhere else, cry...but the truth was, that out of impulse, she couldn't help but follow Sanae, and consequently Yuuna way later into the night.
She did so from a distance to not be spotted, admittedly even jealous that the bunny girl was the one to accompany her back home that night, and with the ex-idol's mind fabricating the worst outcome it could come up with.
That maybe, just after they argued, she intended to sleep with someone else, too.
Having kept in her mind where Sanae lived now, Miku would bite her tongue and go back home that night, finding it useless to try and pursue her then- even worse if she got to hear moans from the inside by accident, a thing that would only fuel her current jealousy.
-⏳-
Just a few days after, and the ex-idol would've prepared herself to visit her ex-girlfriend in hopes that, perhaps now that a few days passed after that encounter, they could speak to each other with a clearer mind...late into the night to make sure the bartender's shift was over.
She took a shower, brushed her hair all nice into her usual ponytails- even going as far as to dress herself up with something a bit more formal for the occasion.
Last thing she wanted was for Sanae to get the wrong image of the person she was now, and even if it wouldn't be a lie to admit she was deep inside a hole at the moment, she wanted to pretend that for a moment, she wasn't.
When the time came to do her makeup, Miku would mess up the one on her left eye, making her squeal in front of the mirror she was using to help herself, and deciding to cover it up with an eye patch...she could attend that later. Should be fine, right?
What...a mess she was still.
But, she could blame her nervousness at the moment. Even if she wasn't in front of Sanae's apartment's door still, her heart was beating fast, and she could feel some anxiety building inside.
Maybe that's why before leaving, the ex-idol picked a pair of her meds for her anxiety, and gulped them down before she would leave to the apartment...not even wanting to alert Teto or Flavia in the process.
-⏳-
The closer she got to the apartment, the more nervous that Miku grew, but thankfully, the pills also made their work on the side, and lessened whatever reaction she could've had once she was finally standing in front of the door.
Raising a hand that curled into a fist, she hesitated at first, but then, clearing her throat, the woman would stretch a single finger to ring the doorbell...then followed by knocking three times.
"ねえあたし知ってるよ きみが"
(Guess what, I know, that you’re all alone)
"ひとり“XX”してるの知ってるよ"
(“XX” ing, I’m wise to it)
"ビクンビクン震えてさ 声もダダ漏れなんだわ"
(Twitching, your dissected heart spasms, your moans are audible)
"正直に言っちゃえよ バレてるんだし言っちゃえよ 効いてんの?"
(Just come clean, secret’s out anyway, how was it?)
"普通普通 恥ずかしい?みんな隠しているだけ"
(It’s normal, so normal, are you embarrassed? Everyone just does it on the down-low)
Miku was singing. It was something she came up with on the spot after last night- but her voice was far from singing it too cheerfully. It was almost talking but following a small rhythm, even if her voice was on the low end.
A hint of sadness in her tone, before she would lean closer to the door, trying to get closer to the peephole.
"ねえあたし知ってるよ きみが"
(Guess what, I know, that you’re all alone)
"ひとり“涙”してるの知ってるよ"
(“tear” ing, I’m wise to it)
"グスングスン凹んでさ 弱音ヒトカラ in the night"
(Sob sob sob and depressed, solitary karaoke lamenting in the night)
"朝が来るまで一緒コース もっと泣いたって"
(We’re fellow all-nighters, doesn’t matter if you cry some more)
"何度だって受け止めてあげる"
(I’m gonna embrace you again and again)
"もう我慢しないでいっぱい出してね"
(Let your tears run free, let out your heart)
"...Sacchan."

Hitorie(ヒトリエ) - Shinoda Essay about Selfy charm via Uta-Net
On June 5th of 2024 “Hitorie” released a new double A-side single called “On the Front Line/Senseless Wonder [ReRec]”! “On the Front Line” was utilized as the opening song for season 2 of the anime “Jobless Reincarnation”. While “Senseless Wonder [ReRec]” is based off of Hitorie’s first major label single from January 22nd 2014, but re-recorded with the current 3 piece band and Shinoda on vocals.
Now, today’s song for this column will be the second essay about the lyrics from the vocalist himself, Shinoda of Hitorie, involving the hidden song on the single also written by him, “Selfy charm”. While writing he had been envisioning someone he’d never met, whilst employing selfies as his motif for his tune. Whatever could be thwarting the morals and principles of this imaginary girl…? Please pair this essay with the song to get the full picture.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
前回は「オン・ザ・フロントライン」についての話をさせていただきましたので、引き続きわたしが歌詞を手掛けた「Selfy charm」か「さくらのいつか」のどちらかの話をしようと思うんですが、「さくらのいつか」に関しては最早語るまでもないというか、あなたが聴いて感じたことが全てと思っていただいて結構ですので、ここはひとつ「selfy charm」について語らせていただこうかと思います。こっちはこっちでかなり僕にとって深刻なテーマを書いたつもりなので… Previously I had delved into the story behind the song “On the Front Line”, so next I thought it appropriate to delve into another song on the same album, meaning either “Selfy charm” or “Sakura no Itsuka”. However in regards to“Sakura no Itsuka” there’s actually nothing that needs to be said aloud, whatever you guys out there think and feel when you listen to it is the whole crux of it, and that’s all that matters in the end. Thus I’ve settled on “Selfy charm” to be the topic of discussion instead. I did write this song with the intention of portraying a fairly serious matter as well, so…
selfyってことで自撮りが歌詞のモチーフになってるんですけど僕は自分の顔が全然好きじゃなく、そのくせ仕事上ステージでカッコつけなければならない局面が多い為、ライブ中はハイになっていたり自分のことが見えてなかったりするので特に気にはならないんですが記録物としての自分を見た途端にコイツこんなツラの癖に自分がカッコいいつもりでやっていたのかと愕然することが多く、それだけで半日寝込んだりする時も余裕であったりするんですね。 Selfy is in the title so obviously the lyrics revolve around the idea of taking pictures of oneself, but the thing is that… I despise my own face, even despite the fact that my profession often demands me to act all cool up on stage. Mid-show once the ball gets rolling I do get into it and lose sight of myself so it doesn’t bother me in the heat of the moment, but as soon as I see myself in the recordings I am often left astonished. “Damn this mutt’s got such an ugly mug yet he’s really putting on airs huh,” I think to myself, then proceed to spend the next half a day sleeping willy-nilly.
ルッキズムが自家中毒を起こして苦しんでいるみたいな状態。てめー何年バンドマンやってんだ、良い加減慣れなさいよって話で、これから歳を取っていくたびに嫌いな部分なんてどんどん増えていくわけで、 このままでは憎悪の螺旋が自己に向けてねじ巻いていくばかりなので早々に割り切りをつけないとこっから先マジでやばそうだなと思ってますが、そんなもんなあ、つけられるんならとっくの昔につけられてたっつーのなあ。 It feels as though it’s lookism causing me to suffer autointoxication. “How many years have you been in a band now you moron get used to it already woncha”, I tell myself. The older I get the more things I find to hate about myself,and at the rate I’m going I’m about ready to become trapped in a wicked spiral of my own making. I realize that I need to cut it out as soon as possible or else I’ll be walking on a tightrope until kingdom come but…. If I was able to do that in the first place then I would’ve done it long ago, y’know.
そんな僕も自撮りをSNSに放り投げまくっていた時期とかあって、若気の至りとスマホを手にした喜びがマリアージュして発芽した過ちとでもいいますか、別に自分の顔を100%憎悪しているわけではなくて、好きなところはあるけど好きじゃない部分は抹消したい程に嫌、といった塩梅でして、これなら世に出せるかもみたいなレベルまで自分の顔を監修出来る楽しさが自撮りにはあったんですよね。ただインカメで反転させたまま撮るという行為にとても違和感を感じていて、結局鏡に映った自分の顔は普段見慣れた顔かもしれないが真実性に欠けるというか、その真実性が自分自身を苦しめている筈なんだけど、なるべく嘘を発信したくないという自分のだるい部分がそれをさせてくれなくて、そのうち色々面倒臭くなって自撮りはやらなくなったのですが…結局そういっただるい部分によってスポイルされるスピード感ってあるよな~とか思ったりします。 Nevertheless even I too had a phase when I would flood social media platforms with my selfies. The heat of my youth mixed with the joy of holding a smart phone in my hands, it was like those two ideas married together to germinate a mistake. It’s not as if I 100% cannot stand my own face, there’s things about it that I do indeed like, it’s just that the more I want to eliminate the parts I don’t like, the more and more I grow to hate those parts, it’s a vicious cycle. So back in the day I had found fun in supervising my own face and capturing a selfy that was good enough to show the world. However, the whole thing with the Instagram Camera and stuff wherein you can take photos flipped from the get-go and all just feels weird to me. Like it’s true that I am more used to the face I see in the mirror, but it just doesn’t feel as true to reality if I flip the image that way. That exact reality may be exactly what inflicts upon me great pains but, the annoying thing about me is that I’m not the kinda guy to tell lies and so for that reason I just refuse to do what’s better for me sometimes. TL;DR all this crap mixed together is what’s made me stop taking selfies. I find that said annoying part of myself does end up spoiling good things pretty fast sometimes.
何か“嘘”という言葉を曲中で用いてる時点で呪いに似た衆愚的感覚が心に刻み込まれているのかもしれないと、改めて歌詞を読み返し痛感する次第です。この歌詞の主人公である彼女が対立する価値観こそがわたしの呪いのようなそれで、美しくなりたいと願い、行動し続ける彼女達に容易に浴びせられる「嘘」だとか「汚れ」といった数多の定型句が装填されたまま回る世界のある日の刹那、タイムラインに颯爽と現れ、タブレットの液晶を滑らせる指を反射的に止めさせられた一枚のセルフィーの美しさに込められた覚悟と情念、のようなものを勝手に想像している時点で到底僕なんかが追いつけないスピード感で彼女達は生きているのかもしれない、という想像。会ったこともないような誰かを想像しながら歌詞を書くってマジで謎の行為だなと思うんですが、それでも書きたくなってしまったものはしょうがないじゃない。 The fact that I use the word “lie” so much in the song perhaps exhibits a mobocratic sensibility that’s been etched onto my heart that’s akin to a curse, or so I felt become painfully apparent after I reread over the lyrics. The girl who’s the main character of this song and her opposing values* are just like this curse of mine, she wishes she could be beautiful. She charges herself up with stock phrases such as “impurities”and“lies” that other woman so readily bask in, until one fateful moment, when as the world was going round and round something gracefully materialized on her Timeline: a selfy depicting a beauty filled with such resolve and passion that it caused the finger sliding around the liquid crystal within her display to immediately halt in its tracks. Or so I envisioned and realized that these woman are living life so fast that I could never ever dare to catch up with them. Writing lyrics while thinking about some imaginary person I’ve never met before is some really whacky stuff I think but, once an idea’s stuck in my head what else is a guy to do but get it outta their system y’know.
「さくらのいつか」に関しても、曲も歌詞も含めて果たしてこれを今書いてしまっていいのかしら、と悩んだ時もありましたが、それよりも書きたくなってしまったものはしょうがないじゃない、という気持ちが余裕で勝ったので、昨今のわたしはきっとそういうモードなのかもしれません。多分良い傾向なんだと思う。 Both this song and “Sakura no Itsuka” had me stressing for a while whether they were okay to write or not, but in the end once an idea’s stuck in my head what’s a guy to do but write it, and that inspiration won over the stress in the end. I’m just in that kinda zone these days I guess. And I think it’s probably for the better.
JJ Lyrics Part 1: Jack & Jeanne of Quartz
I've been asked by a few people about an English version of the opening theme since Ion doesn't give lyrics for it in-game. I do not trust myself to have the lyrical ability to translate it well rhythmically, but I've been thinking that perhaps if I put out a gist of the meaning then perhaps someone more musically inclined can work off of that to turn it into something usable. At the very least, I hope it's helpful to give a bit more context. I'll include the original lyrics as well for those who want to compare side by side. For all of these (assuming I get to more) I'll be using the full song version lyrics from the vocal collection. Translation notes are in brackets. Sorry the spacing is weird because Tumblr's formatting is honestly kinda garbage and won't let me change much.
Can listen along to the full version song on Youtube here. I also got the full character colour-coded lyrics here. Note: The lyrics in this game are quite dense with nuances and references so if there's any I seem to have missed, please do let me know! Please consider these simply rough drafts to get the gist of the full lyrics as I just did this in one sitting. Normally I check over things a few times before posting, but I kinda did this on a whim. Things like pronouns and prepositions are very much context-dependent here so a fair bit can be changed depending on interpretation. If there are clear mistakes, please let me know and I'll edit it.
Kai: こころにひそむ無色の願い
Suzu: かたちに出来ずうつむく
Colourless wishes hidden deep within one’s heart/
Unable to take form, looking downwards
(The word for colourless is often used in reference to Quartz particularly since they are the inexperienced class who have yet to develop their unique “colours” yet)
Kisa/Mitsuki: いつか見ていた夢のつづき
Neji: どこまで行けるか?
Kisa/Sou: たしかめようその器を
Fumi: からだ賭けて
Keeping alive that dream you once saw/
How far can you go for it?/
Let’s give it a shot with this vessel/
Risking our bodies on it
(Since it’s a group number I’m just assuming bodies here to be plural)
LIs: この胸で躍る
Kisa: 眼差しがとらえる
LIs: 可能性のリズム
Kisa: クォーツのペンデュラム
LIs: 踊れよジャック
Kisa: 映すポテンシャル
All: まだ行ける?
This dancing in our chests/
Capturing a glimpse/
The rhythm of possibility/
Pendulum of Quartz/
Dance, Jacks!/
Reflective potential/
Can you keep going?
(In these alternating LI/Kisa sections, assume that they are singing both sets of lines simultaneously, but whoever is listed first in the section is the more prominent one)
Kisa: さあ乙女たちも
LIs: 僕らを導く
Kisa: いま立ち上がる
LIs: クリスタルのパス
Kisa: 歌えよジャンヌ
LIs: 歩む未踏の地
All: まだ行ける?
And to all you girls too/
Guide us (masc)/
Stand up right now/
Path of crystal/
Sing, Jeannes!/ Walk the untread land/
Can you keep going?
(Not entirely sure about the meaning of パス here since it can be read as ‘path’ or ‘pass’ and it isn’t fully clear)
Fumi/Kai: からだに巣食ううつろな渇き
Kai/Neji: 満たせるものは
Neji: 自分だけ
This gnawing emptiness lodged in your body/
Can be filled by/
Only you yourself
Kisa/Sou: きみと見ていた淡い夢は
Neji: あえかに咲く花
Kisa/Suzu: うつくしいもの守れるなら
Fumi/Mitsuki: こころ捧ぐ
This faded dream I saw with you/
Fleeting flowers in bloom/
If it can protect these things of beauty/
We’ll devote our hearts to it
(The kanji for ‘fade’ here matches the kanji used in the song Faded Color, but the kanji for flower is different from the stage flower/vessel usage)
LIs: この願いだけが
Kisa: チャコールナイトグレー
LIs: くらやみ照らす
Kisa: クォーツのライトで
LIs: しるべのランプ
Kisa: 未来さえ照らして
All: まだ行ける
With this wish alone/
Charcoal grey/
Illuminating the darkness/
Through the light of Quartz/
The guidepost lamp/
Light us even into the future/
We can keep going
(Guidepost しるべ is similar although not exactly the same as 道しるべ used in the title of the moon novel)
Kisa: ただ終われない
LIs: はるかなビジョンは
Kisa: そう、想うだけじゃ
LIs: ロマンの見取り図
Kisa: 一度きりの幕
LIs: 二度は描けない
All: まだ行ける
It cannot simply end/
A far away vision/
Yes, this can’t be just an idea/
Outline for a tale/
Just once behind that curtain/
Never to be written twice/
We can keep going
Kisa: ときに迷おうとも
さきが見えずとも
Sou: 残した足跡
Kisa/Neji/Sou: 信じて
Suzu: 遠回りしても
Kisa: ただ
Suzu: 足がもつれても
Kisa: 歩き続ける
Kisa/Mistuki: ことを
Even if you’re sometimes lost/
When you can’t see the way ahead/
The footprints left behind/
Trust in them/
Even if you go in circles/
Can only/
Even if you trip over your feet/
Keep walking forward/
This is the thing
(ことを at the end of the sentence is rather hard to translate into English since it’s so context-dependent so by all means feel free to find a better iteration of that last line)
Kai: ただただ重ねて
Kisa: 人はみな育つ
Neji: まだまだ行けるさ
Mistuki: けして手放すな
Kisa: 今にも
Fumi: 原石が
Kisa: 光り
Suzu/Sou: かがやく
Just keeps building, building up/
All people grow up/
We keep going, going/
Never letting go/
On the verge of/
This rough gem’s/
Light/
Shining
(Tried to keep some of the word duplication but it can definitely be done better. The word for rough/unpolished gem/ore is akin to ‘diamond in the rough’ in English and is again used a lot in reference to Quartz being inexperienced but with great potential value)
(This part repeats the first LI/Kisa sections)
LIs: この胸で躍る
Kisa: 眼差しがとらえる
LIs: 可能性のリズム
Kisa: クォーツのペンデュラム
LIs: 踊れよジャック
Kisa: 映すポテンシャル
All: まだ行ける?
This dancing in our chests/
Capturing a glimpse/
The rhythm of possibility/
Pendulum of Quartz/
Dance, Jacks!/
Reflective potential/
Can you keep going?
Kisa: さあ乙女たちも
LIs: 僕らを導く
Kisa: いま立ち上がる
LIs: クリスタルのパス
Kisa: 歌えよジャンヌ
LIs: 歩む未踏の地
All: さあ行こう! Oh
And to all you girls too/
Guide us (masc)/
Stand up right now/
Path of crystal/
Sing, Jeannes!/ Walk the untread land/
Well, let’s go! Oh!
—
Overall thoughts: I’m sure people can draw their own interpretations from this but you can see it’s a song about dreams and the hard-fought battles in pursuing said dreams with lots of Quartz-related phrasing. Quite interesting as well how Kisa is sometimes mixed in with various LI characters and sometimes singing in contrast to them.
I would recommend for those who haven’t read it to also check out the first chapter of the moon novel (translation here) as it emphasizes Kisa grappling between her dreams and her reality.
Also I would like to plug this cover version by Saki Hazuki singing this song with both male and female parts which feels very Jack Jeanne.
Maomao “Ehehe, kore’wa-desu-ne… Kya-kya, kya-kya.”
Maomao “Hehe, this is… (talking lively and cheerfully)”
キャッキャッ(Kya-kya): onomatopoeia for girls’ or kids’ enjoying talking
翠苓「キャッキャッ」
Suirei “Kya-kya.”
Suirei (talking lively and cheerfully)
In case of Suirei, I’m not sure if I can call it “lively and cheerfully” but she must be enjoying.
子翠「放(ほう)っとこう」
Shisui “Hottoko.”
Shisui “Let’s leave them as they are.”
ほうっておく、ほっとく(hotte-oku, hottoku): leave it alone, leave it as it is
New Sonic Channel EGGMAN wallpaper!
THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL HE'S SO PERFECT I LOVE HIM WITH ALL MY HEART AHHFKSBAHFKABDKAJFSJ!!!!!! 💕💜💖💕💖💜💗💜💖💕💜💗
I MUST include the description on the page because OMFG I'm losing my mind!!! Translation of what I could get through DeepL, seems slightly better than what I can get on auto translate on the page:
"It is no exaggeration to say that the Sonic series would not begin without him! He is pushing forward towards his ambition of world domination: ...... He has an IQ of 300!
You all know what I'm talking about, don't you?
The evil genius scientist who has no equal in this world.
It's Dr. Eggman!
It is rare to see Dr. Eggman, a scientist, in a fighting pose: ......! No, or perhaps he is watching with a look of satisfaction as he beheads his enemies with the mecha and robots he has created himself......! Either way, he looks really cool with his fearless smile and kanroku poses!
As you all know, Dr. Eggman has been Sonic's nemesis ever since his debut in the game "Sonic the Hedgehog" and has been a big villain who has been plotting various devious schemes. Sometimes he acts as a serious and dignified "evil genius scientist," and at other times he shows a slightly off-kilter "angry old man" side. ...... I think that this variety of charm is the reason why Dr. Eggman is not only a big bad guy but also a great villain.
Coolness like in this illustration is also one of his many charms!
The latest game title to feature Dr. Eggman is "Sonic Frontiers," the third free major upload of which was released today!
In this title, Dr. Eggman is trapped in a mysterious place called "cyberspace," but even in such a situation, his clear mind, strong will ...... He is still a very smart, strong-willed, and selfish man, and this time, too, he is "as good as Eggman! He was very unique with his new subordinate girl, "Sage". The unique relationship with the new subordinate girl, "Sage," is also not to be missed. ......"
-----------------
Let me just gush about WHY I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS:
"It is no exaggeration to say that the Sonic series would not begin without him!"
It really is no exaggeration to say many of the games and entire series wouldn't have even began without him and that's why he's so important!
"The evil genius scientist who has no equal in this world."
That's right because he's the BEST and he knows it so that's why his ego is huge! XD
"It is rare to see Dr. Eggman, a scientist, in a fighting pose: ......! No, or perhaps he is watching with a look of satisfaction as he beheads his enemies with the mecha and robots he has created himself......! Either way, he looks really cool with his fearless smile and kanroku poses!"
They say he's possibly either got a "fighting stance" like the big strong handsome man he is or he's watching with a look of satisfaction as he "BEHEADS HIS ENEMIES" with his "mecha and robots he created himself" !!!! FUCK YEAH HE LOVES VIOLENCE AND DESTRUCTION that's the real dynamic he has with his creations!!! And yes he does look "really cool" with his pose and his "fearless smile" AHHHH 🥰
"Dr. Eggman has been Sonic's nemesis ever since his debut and has been a big villain who has been plotting various devious schemes.
Sometimes he acts as a serious and dignified "evil genius scientist," and at other times he shows a slightly off-kilter "angry old man" side.
I think that this variety of charm is the reason why Dr. Eggman is not only a big bad guy but also a great villain. Coolness like in this illustration is also one of his many charms!"
THIS SUMS HIM UP SO PERFECTLY, he's a big villain that plots devious schemes of world domination! He's an "EVIL GENIUS SCIENTIST" AND an "ANGRY OLD MAN" side! I love how he's an evil scientific and evil old man, my favorite way to describe him!
"Coolness is one if his many charms." Yes he IS cool and that IS one of the many parts of his charm!!!!
"Dr. Eggman is trapped in a mysterious place called "cyberspace," but even in such a situation, his clear mind, strong will. He is still a very smart, strong-willed, and selfish man."
HE'S A VERY "SMART, STRONG-WILLED, AND SELFISH MAN" YOU'RE GOD DAMN RIGHT HE IS!!!!! 💗💕💜💜💕💗💕💜
"He was very unique with his new subordinate girl, "Sage".
AND acknowledgement that Sage is his "SUBORDINATE" as his servant and protector not the other way around‽‽‽
This is saying absolutely EVERYTHING I'm saying about him ALL THE TIME, it's like they reached into my mind and pulled out every single thing I've ever observed about his character and summed it up here!
I'm so glad I was right and that he really is the man I fell in love with and that OFFICIAL JAPANESE SONIC TEAM/SONIC CHANNEL MEMBERS who really get the say agree and describe him that way when it comes to their own character- I'm so happy I could cry :'D
#I LOVE HIM SO MUCH I'M SO SO SO HAPPY#dr eggman#eggman#dr robotnik#dr. eggman#sonic channel#sonic frontiers#sage the ai#my post#hits
hey hey hey, erase the heart emoji, i’m panicking hiding my embarrassment every time i cover up my racing heart and face you, it feels like we’re speaking different languages hey hey hey, i’m a faraway planet in a bit part, dreaming in my klutzy way the lost love in the depths of my heart feels like someone else’s problem even though we’re close it feels like we’re drifting away
かまってちゃんって なんで?身勝手だって なんで? 悩んでしまって 不安で黙って 泡になっちゃう アローンアローン すれ違う双方のねぇねぇねぇねぇ。 無関心も安心も紙一重さ
why am i such attention whore? why am i so selfish? fretting, angsting in silence, turning into foam, alone, alone the both of us brushing by each other, saying hey hey hey hey the line between apathy and ease is razor-thin
ねぇねぇねぇ。@君へ一方通行のメンションです 夜明けまで二人喋ってるのに 独り言みたいな感じ ねぇねぇねぇ。臆病な劣等生 僕たちは未経験です 世界中「好き」で溢れてるのに 一人きりみたいな感じ あなたは今どんな感じ? 二人とも大好きな感じ?
Muzan (I had gained power. Eternal power! But… having to restrict my movements during the day was humiliating… and my anger only grew. I began to seek a body that wouldn’t perish in the sunlight. I examined the compounds for the doctor’s elixir, but perhaps because it was still in the experimental stages. I couldn’t figure out how to make the medicine called ‘Blue Spider Lily.’ It did seem to contain actual blue-colored Spider Lilies… but as for where this Blue Spider Lily bloomed or whether or not it could be cultivated… no one knew but the doctor I’d killed. I searched all over Japan but failed to find it. In order to become truly immortal… finding the Blue Spider Lily… and someone who had the ability to survive the sunlight… Those two have been my top priorities. And at last… I’ve found her! Since that girl has conquered the sun… there’s no longer any reason to increase my kind. I will absorb her… and then I will conquer the sunlight. I will get my hands on Nezuko… and become a perfect being!”
BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Pre-marriage Todoroki Enji (Part 1)
So, in order to write my fic, I spend much time observing canon scenes, comparing the manga and the anime version, take note of details, translations and info in them as well as finding out how are some things called.
Since what I noticed/speculated/found out can be of use for other fic authors I thought to share as well.
Resources:
Chap. 356 "Regarding the Enemy" (敵について Teki ni Tsuite) Chap. 93 "One For All's Ember" (残り火ワンフォーオール Nokoribi One for All) Chap. 165 "Win Those Kids' Hearts" (掴めガキ心) Tsukame Gaki Gokoro) Chap. 189 "Why He Gets Back Up" (彼は何故立ち続けたか Kare wa Naze Tachi Tsudzuketa ka) Chap 192 "The Todoroki Family" (轟家 Todoroki-ke)
Ep. 49 "One For All" (ワン・フォー・オール) Ep. 79 "Win Those Kids' Hearts" (掴めガキ心 Tsukame Gaki Gokoro)
School Briefs I "Epilogue" School Briefs III "Dramatic Makeover!"
Team-Up Missions: Mission 33
To this date the chapter that shows the youngest Todoroki Enji is 356, which include some sort of dream/hallucination in which Enji faces his past self and his 'origin' so first let's look at...
THE FULL SEQUENCE AS IT IS IN THE MANGA
There are two core scenes, one depicting Enji's father's death preceded by a speech of young Enji:
'Sara ni yowaku natta' 「更に弱くなった」 “You became beyond weak.”
'Tachiba to tsugunai to ayamachi to sekinin ga' 「立場と償いと過ちと責任が」 “Position, atonement, mistakes and responsibility.”
'Omae no seirai no yowasa wo abaki dashi miru ni taenai guzu e to hikizuri oroshita' 「おまえの生来の弱さを曝き出し見るに堪えない愚図へと引きずり下ろした」 “Your innate weaknesses was exposed and I can't bear to see how you were dragged down into an indecisive person.”
'Chōjin ni wa narenainda yo Enji (omae) wa' 「超人にはなれないんだよ炎司(おまえ)は」 “Enji, you can’t become a superhuman.”
'Genten wo omoi dase' 「原点を思い出せ」 “Remember your origin.”
While fighting the Nomu Enji said he hated U.A. School motto, Plus Ultra or, in Japanese 'Sarani mukō e' (更に向こうへ "Beyond the other side" or, better "Further beyond"). Now his past self seems to taunt him saying 'Sara ni yowaku natta' (更に弱くなった “You became beyond weak.”)
'Seirai no yowasa' (生来の弱さ) is translated as 'weakness that was always there' in the English version but 'seirai' (生来) actually make clear the weakness is innate, by nature. In short Enji was born weak and tried to hid it. 'Guzu' (愚図), more than a loser is a 'foolish figure', a 'dullard' or also an 'indecisive person'. Enji project an air of arrogance and security but Enji's younger self is implying he's basically not capable.
The official translation uses "Superhero" to translate 'Chōjin' (超人), but there's no 'hero' in the word, someone can be a 'Chōjin' (超人) and be a villain. Ironically we could also translate it as 'superman', and considering later Enji uses laser eyes like Superman I wonder if this was planned.
'Teki ga nan datta no ka wo' 「敵が何だったのかを」 "What was the enemy?"
'Akkan kara shoujo wo sukuou to shi kekka shoujo moro tomo nikukai to ka shita chichi wo' 「悪漢から少女を救おうとし結果少女もろとも肉塊と化した父を」 "Your father tries to save a girl from a scroundel and, as a result, he and the girl were turned into a lump of meat."
The way the sentence is put, it seems to imply that the girl and Enji's father both died because the man tried to save her.
Enji is witnessing the scene, a schoolbag on his back. His school uniform misses the shoulder insigna and the necktie which are part of U.A. summer uniform, so it's possible this took place before Enji joined U.A.
The whole implication of the sentence and the dialogue seems to be that since his father was weak, he caused his own death as well as the one of the girl, and this should have started Enji's obsession for strength.
Young Enji goes on speaking about other things Enji should remember:
’Shin no choujin he no senbou to higami wo’ 「真の超人への羨望と僻みを」 “Your envy and inferiority complex toward a true superhuman…”
Again, the official translation uses plural but there's the image of All Might and in My Hero Academia Ultra Archive is made clear Enji previously viewed everyone else but All Might as weak, so the 'true superhuman' is solely All Might back in his past (then he also added Deku).
We can't see Enji's father's face but he's likely the man on the picture hung on the wall in the room with the Butsudan as in that room Enji would place the photo of his deceased family members.
Going on.
'"Doryoku (‘Endeavor’)” to nanoru hikutsu na shoune wo' 「“努力" (エンデヴァー)と名乗る卑屈な性根を」 “You called yourself ‘effort’ (read 'Endeavor’) due to your menial nature.”
This bit confirms Enji chose his Hero name while at U.A. and picked it up because (compared to All Might) he believed he lacked in skill but, probably, he thought he could compensate with effort/hard work.
From other chapters we know Enji and Recovery Girl know each other from his time at U.A.
‘OB no Yoshimi de kite ageta yo’ 「OBのよしみで来てあげたよ」 “I came for you since you were an alumnus”
'Soreni ima wa mō No.1 hīrōda mono ne' 「それに今はもうNo.1ヒーローだものね」 "Besides, you're also the No. 1 hero now.'
While in the Japanese version Recovery Girl is more vague, saying she came because Enji was an alumnus, since she's in U.A. by basically forever she likely got to know him, which is confirmed in "School Briefs I Epilogue" and "School Briefs III Dramatic Makeover!".
In "School Briefs I Epilogue" is said that with her Enji manages his manners because she's someone he had known nearly all his life.
By the way the two of them call each other by their Hero names.
"School Briefs III Dramatic Makeover!" is more specific. It has Recovery Girl tell Shōto she's been in U.A. by a long time and knew his father from when he was a student at U.A. and how she was always threating him for scrapes, cuts and bruises back in those days as his father used to put himself through the wringer hoping to become Number 1 one day, implying he was impressively driven. Shōto will make clear he doesn't want to hear about his father so she'll later be more subtle, telling him every boy and girl at U.A. tend to do their darnest and that they always had, implying Enji did the same.
We also have a bit of info in "Team-Up Missions: Mission 33" about how Enji holds the U.A. record for no-quirks trash pick-up (as All Might was too busy chatting with everyone).
'Sorezore ga hirotta gomi no sōryō o kiroku!' 「それぞれが拾ったゴミの総量を記録!」 "Record the total amount of trash each person picked up!"
'Tadashi "kosei" shiyō-fuka!' 「ただし”個性”使用不可!」 "However, "Quirk" cannot be used!"
'Onore no junsuina tairyoku nomi de shin kiroku o mezasu nōsuji ibentona nda!' 「己の純粋な体力のみで新記録を目指す脳筋イベントなんだ!」 "It's a brain-muscle event where you aim for a new record using only your own physical strength!"
'Chinamini rekidai No. 1 kiroku hoji-sha Endeavor da 「ちなみに歴代No.1記録保持者エンデヴァーだ」 "By the way, Endeavor is the all-time No. 1 record holder."
There's something else in chap 356 that's interesting in the following bit.
'Kojishite inakereba tamotenu teido no minikui kokoro wo' 「誇示していなければ保てぬ程度の醜い心を」 “Unless you're putting on airs you can't sustain your ugly heart”
'Minikui' (醜い) means "ugly" in the sense of "unsightly/unattractive". 'Kokoro' (心) is a delicious word that can refer to "(emotional) heart" but also to "mind" and "soul".
So basically Young Enji is saying that to hide the fact Enji is weak and indecisive, not a real superhuman, he put on airs to hide it... but the interesting part is that the image focuses on Enji's fire beard.
This was said in his profile.
The rest we have on Enji's youth is from other chapter and it's mostly tiny info.
We've a young Enji, who's now an adult but who still feels the gap between himself and All Might is one he can't surpass.
'Kisama (All Might)..." 「貴様 (オールマイト)…」 "All Might..."
'Kisama o koeyou to kensan o kasanete kita…!' 貴様を超えようと研鑽を重ねてきた…! "I've been repeatedly training hard to surpass you…!"
'Kasaneru hodo ni tsūkan suru.' 重ねる程に痛感する。 "I realized the more I repeatedly did it, the more I feel the pain."
'Kisama to no sa ga… kisama no senaka ga…!!' 貴様との差が… 貴様の背中が…!! "The difference between you and me is… your back…! !"
'Zetsubō ga! ! Ore o…' 絶望が!!俺を… "I despaired! ! I…"
'Nanda so nonnasakenai senaka wa!!' 「なんだそのっ情けない背中は!!」 “What’s with that pathetic back?!”
LOL, the sentence seems not to make sense but in Japan a large back is equated to strength. Hawks later, thinking about Endeavor will say Enji must do it because Hawks' back isn't large enough.
On another interesting bit... even if Enji says 'All Might' the kanji actually say 'kisama' (貴様) which is currently a very rude way to say 'you'.
We've another bit about Enji's past when he talks with All Might after the latter retired.
'Ore wa ase kō ni subete o takushita' 「俺は焦凍に全てを託した」 "I entrusted everything to Shoto"
'Hatachi no koro ni wa sudeni No. 2 e to noboritsumeta.' 「二十歳の頃には既にNo.2へと登りつめた」 "By the time I was 20 years old, I had already climbed to No. 2."
'Tō tte kitakara koso… rikai shite shimatta.' 「登ってきたからこそ…理解してしまった」 "Because I made that climb… I understands."
'Ore wa itadaki ni wa tadoritsukenai to' 「俺は頂きには辿り着けないと」 "I can't reach the top"
'katagaki ga hoshī dakenara kisama no yō ni herahera to' 「肩書きが欲しいだけなら貴様のようにヘラヘラと」 "If I just wanted a title, I'll be laughing like you."
'Aiso mo furimaitadarou sa.' 「愛想も振りまいただろうさ」 "I would have showed sociability as well."
'Ore wa dare yori tsuyoku naritakatta' 「俺は誰より強くなりたかった」 "I wanted to be stronger than anyone else"
Okay so this was meant to be solely about Enji's past but I can't skip this line. The English translation decided to translate 'takushita' (託した) with 'gave' but it's not like Enji gave Shouto everything Shouto wanted... it's that Enji entrusted his dream, his everything to Shouto. So he's not really depicting himself like a doting father but as a father who planned to have his kid fulfil his dream.
The relevant part in this little dialogue is that Enji became Number 2 at 20.
Considering he started U.A. at 15 and should have finished attending it at 19, it's quite a fast climbing.
The mountain is probably Sekoto Peak (瀬古杜岳 'Sekoto take'), where Enji said he used to train in the past and where Touya will 'die'. (Chap 291).
According to Hawks, Enji was the only one trying to surpass All Might.
Technically though, considering Hawks is one year younger than Touya and got interested in Endeavor after he was saved, he only witnessed him post marriage and it's hard to say if this applied also to when Enji was pretty young. Anyway the previous generation of Heroes come out pretty lame as now the kids at U.A. wants to surpass All Might while before only Enji considered doing it.
And so we get to Enji deciding he can't surpass All Might and therefore must produce a heir who will do so for him... but as that part was transposed in the anime, for a better comparison I'll put it in a part 2.
Hey, so, what do these banners on the walls mean?
Well these aren't real kanji. You don't have to take it from me:
Q: BLEACH の中央四十六室が斬殺されている場面に書いてある四つの漢字何て書いてあるのでしょうか? A: 作者の創作漢字です 東西南北と青龍朱雀玄武白虎の頭文字からとり一つの漢字として組み合わせたものです 意味はまぁ東西南北あらゆるものから世界を護るような感じでしょうか四方と守護神なので
Or rather, via Google Translate with some cleanup:
Q: What are the four kanji characters written in the scene where the central 46 rooms of Bleach are being killed? A: It is a kanji created by the author. It is a combination of the initials of east, west, north, south, and blue dragon, vermillion bird, black tortoise, and white tiger as one kanji.
That is to say, they're an allusion to the Four Symbols of Chinese mythology. So you know how I said it made sense that Chinese be known by the elites? Yeah. You know how I also said it made sense that Central 46 exist as a rival institution to the Four Great Noble Houses? These appeals to heavenly authority are essentially in direct opposition to similar claims from the Four Great Noble Houses! Let's review. Tokinada says in CFYOW vol. I:
"But that’s the Soul Society. The Central 46 are the five noble clan’s yes-men, especially when it comes to the powerful Tsunayashiro house.”
Tokinada is obviously trying to mess with Kaname, and this happened over 100 years prior. Later we get:
The Central 46 was the acting voice of the Soul King and so led the Soul Reapers. Occasionally they acted as the supreme judiciary body and meted out judgments. Nayura Amakado was the youngest member of that body—a girl who appeared to be just ten years old. But both Kyoraku and Nanao recognized that the girl had a sharpness that came from living many years longer than her looks suggested, and that she had initiated steady changes in the Central 46, which had on principle previously served the aristocrats foremost.
(This incidentally confirms my statements about how soul growth slows down sometime after five years of age.) Later we get this:
“So, about that. The higher-ups have something they want announced directly in the Bulletin. I thought I’d at least tell you about it, since you’re the captain.” “They want something announced? By ‘higher-ups,’ do you mean Squad Zero?” “No, the Central 46. Or the aristocrats behind the scenes, to be exact.” Kyoraku turned to Hisagi for just a moment before he continued.
We also get told:
Kyoraku didn’t smile back. He simply asked flatly, “And so? What business brought you all the way up here? If you have complaints about the Court Guard, I’d rather you send those through the Gilded Seal Aristocratic Assembly or the Central 46.” “Oh, it’s a simple matter. I want you to get in touch with some people for me. Yoruichi Shihoin doesn’t seem to receive communications through the aristocratic network. Even the Gilded Seal Aristocratic Assembly don’t know where she is. Kuchiki is another matter entirely, but you should at least know how to get in touch with that shrew, am I right?” Tokinada handed Kyoraku a paper with a message for Yoruichi
Later still we get this:
“I want to get the five families on my side, and if I can obtain the formal consent of the Reio, I want to make the Five Great Noble Clans as a body equal in rank to the king. Then the clans would surpass the Central 46 in power as a decision-making body. In fact, I suspect the reason the Central 46 crushed the Shiba house was to make sure something like this never happened.” Tokinada chuckled as he continued. “Haven’t you had your doubts? Why did the Shiba family get such a cold reception from the Five Great Noble Clans? Officially, the Shiba set up in the Rukongai in order to build their secret fortifications. But even before they were stripped of their noble position, the Shiba were treated like they were lower than the poorest of the lower aristocracy. Doesn’t it bother you that the Shiba family allowed that?”
In CFYOW vol. III, we get this:
It was clearly a problem that a man like this was the head of the Four Great Noble Clans, a position within the Soul Society that was on equal footing with the Central 46.
Okay, so let's bring it all together. There are at least four major bodies in the government of Soul Society:
The Soul King and Royal Family: figurehead; ostensibly head of state and highest authority, but in truth essentially fiction.
The Four Great Noble Houses (formerly Five Great Noble Houses): functionally the executive branch; the Shōichī or First Rank nobility who hold the ranks of Dukes, having sealed the Soul King originally and established the system. Nominally safeguard the system.
Central 46: functionally the judicial branch, a court made up of 6 judges and 40 sages on par with the Four Great Noble Houses, was formerly under their sway when they were the Five Great Noble Houses but has now tilted to the Gilded Seal Aristocratic Assembly and is under their sway. Nominally speak on behalf of the Soul King.
Gilded Seal Aristocratic Assembly: functionally the legislative branch; ostensibly composed of lesser nobles below the rank of Shōichī and by process of elimination now currently actually in charge.
I've been back and forth over this before (see here and here) with some different terminology and framing, but I think it's easy to see that, as I've said before, Soul Society is fundamentally defined by political infighting among different political classes, chiefly the Great Nobles versus the Nobles.
We can understand that Central 46 used to be the tool of the Five Great Noble Houses, but the demotion of House Shiba and its reduction to Four Great Noble Houses was functionally a coup d'état that realigned Central 46 to serving the interests of the comparatively mysterious Gilded Seal Aristocratic Assembly. Tokinada is truly only attempting to cause chaos and anarchy, but doing so under the guise of restoring the Five Great Noble Houses to their former primacy. What Nayura Amakado is doing is effectively trying to make Central 46 independent of either group rather than their cat's paw.
In other words, Soul Society is what happens when separation of powers goes bad and is not regulated by anything except self-interest and violence-making ability:
According to the principle of checks and balances, each of the branches of the state should have the power to limit or check the other two, creating a balance between the three separate powers of the state. Each branch's efforts to prevent either of the other branches becoming supreme form part of an eternal conflict, which leaves the people free from government abuses. Immanuel Kant was an advocate of this, noting that "the problem of setting up a state can be solved even by a nation of devils" so long as they possess an appropriate constitution to pit opposing factions against each other.
You can also take it as a warning about the perils of a judiciary which isn't independent of and separate from political concerns, which, uh, topical.
#Out Of Character#Bleach#Meta#Long Post#Blood TW#Death TW#[ this isn't as rigorous as I'd like ]#[ but writing about imaginary sociopolitical arrangements ]#[ takes a lot of effort for little actual return ]#[ so just deal with these kinda more rambling remarks ig ]
葉月ゆら - Messiah:Reverse
手のひらの駒鳥(こまどり) 白銀に消えた… (早く、捕まえて)
The small robin I held in my hand vanished into a platinium color
(Hurry up, try and catch me)
色褪せた城の底で 鶫(つぐみ)は歌い さざめく 煌く硝子に眠る 白夜の少女 狩られると知らず 招かれざる指先 祈りは短く 重い「刃の残像」(ざんぞう)が羽に強く触れた 空に舞い降りた 君は美しく 僕は人間(だれか)を 初めて好きになる 夜に魅せられた 剣は震えて 闇が包む 心奪うまで 嵐のように
At the bottom of faded castle, a little thrush sings and rustles
Sleeping in the glittering glass is the maiden of the bright night
Unaware that she is being hunted down
Unwelcoming fingers cut short your prayers
The heavy "after image" of a blade pressed your wings intensly
I saw you dance in the sky : you were beautiful
For the first time, I came to love someone
Charmed by the night, my sword trembled
The darkness overcomes me until it steal my heart away, as if it were a storm
「叛逆の救世主(メシア)、堕ちる」 予言は叫び 戦慄く 朽ち果てた茨越えて 小鳥の少女 偽りも知らず 赦されない恋と リボンを結んで 淡い唇 牙にゆるく触れた 雪に閉ざされた 世界凍りつく 僕は人間(だれか)を 初めて守りたい 光喪(うしな)って 奇跡は無くとも 白く続く… 君を隠すだろう 吹雪のように
"The Rebellious Messiah shall fall"
Thus screamed the crying prophecy
Crossing past the decaying thorns, is the bird like girl
Unaware of deceit
This is an unforgiveable love : I tie a ribbon and touch gently her fangs with my pale lips
Emprisonned by the snow, the world began to freeze
For the first time in my life, I want to protect someone
Even if light were to be lost, that miracles cease to be
This bright whitness continues to be, I will hide you...like the snowstorm of that day
何も言わないで 胸を貫いた 僕のすべてを 命を捧げても 空に舞い降りた 涙美しく 僕は必ず 君だけ守るから 夜に攫われた 剣は要らない 炎包む 僕を奪うまで いつかのように…
Without saying anything, I ended up piercing your chest
Even though I was ready to sacrifice my everything, even my very life
Dancing in the sky, your tears are beautiful
I would always have protected you and only you
I don't need a sword anymore, it has been taken away by the night
Let the flames engulf me, until they steal me away, as if it were just someday
(From my memories of Yura's comment + Meriole's comment : this song is about Messiah and Draculia, Messiah fell in love with Draculia and accept to protect her so long as she cease to drink humans blood, in her side of the story, it's revelead she doesn't stop so Messiah is forced to kill her, according to Meriole the event of the story aren't chronological in Messiah's song.)
The unexpected side of Gestapo-kun
Wolfram sure is an interesting character. My heart is bleeding for this sonuva bitch I can't help myself, so I'm writing about him again.
Ironically, the greatest insight into his psyche was given by the story of Juwel, the girl who was run over by every first mf in the name of their goals. Wolfram thought from the start that her mother, Cedar, is sus, all thanks to his devilish gift...
...which he received at a devilish price (this is heavily hinted at in the same chapter 6; it's not even implied, he directly attributes his ability to past abuse. However, in return, he lost irreplaceable things, and this created a fatal flaw that led to his defeat... I'd love to write about it when I'll have time).
So, then he smiled as he watched her blow her legend to pieces (he didn't even have to threaten her, unlike in the movie Compliance) because his suspicions were justified.
Wolfboi concluded that they carried valuable information, so he devised a plan that required only the girl to be allowed through (tellingly, they actually carried extremely important info. What's interesting is that he caught Cedar trespassing, but never found out what information she was carrying, so for some reason she didn't spill the beans. Laying hands on Juwel was necessary after all).
御領地の平和のために怪しき者を通すわけには参れません. 強いてもておっしゃるなら世界にいささか評判の当関所の楽しい取調べを改めて受けて頂くことになりますが… // For the sake of peace in this domain, I cannot allow suspicious people to pass through. If you're so keen, you'll have to once again undergo our outpost's somewhat famous enjoyable search...
やれやれ. 面倒な人たちですね. 離れるのがいやならふたりでイタリアに戻りなさい // Good grief. You are really troublesome people. If you don't want to leave her, go back to Italy together.
In all seriousness, he suggested that they both just leave, and in response she simply asked to talk to her daughter. He offered them both a chance to go unscathed, but Cedar decided to play right into his hands, and that was fine with him.
“As you wish, I wash my hands of it.”
Perhaps he was just glad that she confirmed his suspicions, but she had already done that, and with this man that was more than enough.
疑わしきは罰しておく. それが私の信条です. 私が怪しいと思いましたお話を疑う理由はそれで十分 // If in doubt, punish. That's my belief. If I felt suspicious, then that is reason enough to doubt your story.
By the way, Wolfram's kitsune-me are almost always shadowed/covered with hair, so it looks like a big deal for his character. Forehead shadow is used to represent various sorts of negative mental states, so the guy always gave me the impression of being dissatisfied with something. In light of this, it is interesting that in the left frame his eyes are covered with phrases about being ever-so-suspicious.
Judging by his reaction, he was serious about that proposal.
普通の人であればあきらめてイタリア戻るでしょう. もちろん娘さんを連れてね. もちろん娘さんを連れてね. ここまでされてしまってはもうただの旅芸人で済ます訳には参りません // An ordinary person would give up and go back to Italy. With their daughter, of course. If things have gotten this far, you can no longer make the excuse that you're just a traveling entertainer.
He also mentioned this later in a conversation with Grete when he had no reason to lie:
その母親がじつに怪しい人物でしたので通行許可を与えずに追い返してみたんです // The mother was a very suspicious person, so I tried to turn her away without giving her permission to pass.
Those words were spoken when Cedar was already dead, but before that he basically let her off the hook, bruh. Why?! There's no way in hell I would let them go after what I saw, then why would this paranoid guy do it? Especially when ruthlessness was established as his main quality since the cover of the first volume.
In the cover text he was called ein gnadenloser Wächter, a merciless guard:
This is then reinforced in his monologue in the very first chapter:
例外的対応は秩序を乱す元 // Making exceptions is a source of disorder.
His monologue at the end of chapter 5 (right before the Cedar and Juwel chapter) goes to the same piggy bank:
本日も万事ぬかりなく. 重々手厳しく参りましょう // There won't be any slip-ups today as well. Let's be extremely harsh.
And for dessert, we'll have a speech on how important it is to never loosen up:
賊は大軍 関所の人員は少数です. 小さな穴がたちまち悲惨な結果を招きます. 賊の侵入は絶対に阻止. 皆さんくれぐれも気を弛めぬように // The bandits have a large army, but the garrison of the outpost is small. A small breach can quickly lead to catastrophic consequences. Absolutely prevent the bandits from invading. Everyone, please do not let your guard down.
Yeah, it was said in a specific situation, but the castle is canonically a metaphor for his mind.
この城はヴォルフラムの性根 そのものだ // This castle is Wolfram's very nature.
In psychology, a house has long served as a metaphor for one's self (hence, for example, the House-Tree-Person test). It's thematically fitting that a house as a mirror of the psyche was a favorite idea of the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, who built the Bollingen Tower with the idea of reflecting his personality in mind.
If we go about associations evoked by a huge stone defensive structure, mine was: "So, Pink's medieval brother in spirit built his Wall IRL?"
Wolfram didn't reveal why he made the order-disrupting exception, but there was another incident where he went against the cautious course of action. When he spared the lives of two children, it was what led to his downfall (actually, it was one of those things). Well, he did not spare them without taking anything in return...
ガキの頃やられました村を襲った盗賊に. 命を助けてやる代わりなどと賊の頭がほざきましてね // It was done by bandits who attacked our village when we were kids. The bandit chief blabbed that this was payment for sparing our lives or something like that.
それは本当にお気の毒です. まったく. 世の中には随分非道な人間がいるものですねぇ // I'm really sorry to hear that. Honestly. There are some very cruel people in this world, aren't there?
Maybe it's just me, but with the way he smiled, his sarcastic remark about cruel people seemed to have a deeper meaning.
Albert took it as if he didn't remember them, but it sure as hell didn't look like he'd forgotten. Another thing is that after this, Wolfram caught on how this thought offended Albert and trolled him into falling into a trap.
In this regard, it is worth noting that the siblings didn't participate in the kamikaze attack only for the sake of revenge; somewhere in chapter 9 they said that they do this because they want to be useful to someone. Not even, for example, to those who helped them, but just to someone. The thing is that it was never revealed how exactly they became free warriors (as far as I remember).
俺たちはそれぞれ片眼を潰されて放り出された. 人買いに売られてこんなところまで流されて来た // We each had one eye gouged out and we were abandoned. We were sold to slave traders and ended up here.
It is not entirely clear whether Wolfram was the one who sold them. Who abandoned them then? The word Albert uses, houridasu, has "to leave something" among its main meanings (screenshot taken from Weblio). It seems they were left alone and other kind people made them slaves.
Albert and Barbara thought that Wolfram had forgotten them the moment he left them, but he was more likely to be interested in them in his own twisted way, with the special way in which he damaged them.
では もうおひとり. せっかくおふたりなんですから次は反対側の眼に致しましょう // Well, now one more. Since there are two of you, now let's take care of the eye on the opposite side.
This bastard really gets off on acting out his ugliest feelings. Wolfram's canonical eye color is unknown, but in this scene he definitely was green-eyed: "Oh, you're so fortunate to have each other? Then from now on you will ALWAYS be together! Muhahahahahaaa!!!"
This guy can relate:
In any case, the idea was obviously to highlight their connection. It sure worked on Barbara:
行くよ兄貴と. 兄貴は右眼あたしは左眼. ふたりそろって一人前だからね // I'll go with my brother. Brother is the right eye and I am the left eye. That's why together we are complete.
If he just wanted to mutilate them, he could've simply taken a firebrand from one of the burning houses annnnnd... It's kinda morbidly funny that in the chapters that tell their story, there was this handsome boy who wanted revenge for his wolf's mouth cleft palate that caused his fiancée to leave him (what a bitch!). Now in his case, he wouldn’t have gotten off with an eyepatch; only a muzzle (or a bag over the head) could have helped.
So, the moral is: you should never leave anyone alive the crimes you commit will come back to haunt you.
That's all for today! :P
