How to Spice Up Your Turf Wars

Splatoon has existed for 10 years now, how inkredible is that? After many years of playing myself, I often found myself bored, but I didn't really wanna do any Ranked Wars as it... tends to take a toll on my wrists. So I came up with some creative "Game Modes" for those anyone who wants to try something new as well. All you need is a group of friends (or a bunch of internet strangers who also wanna play), set up a Private Battle and choose a game mode to play! (It's also recommended to use Voice Chat for easier communication)

Easy Mode: Standard Turf War, but no one is allowed to use their Sub or Special. Bonus Rule: Both teams can use only the same weapon or weapon variants. (Ex: Splash-o-matic or Neo Splash-o-matic)

Sink or Swim: No one is allowed to swim in their ink. Submerging to refill your ink tanks is the only exception.

Bombs Away: You can only ink the ground using your Sub Weapon. (Standard Turf War.)

Safety First: You are not allowed to splat other players. (Standard Turf War.)

After You: Your team gets 1 minute to ink as much of the ground as possible, after time is up all players must jump back to Spawn and Wait. The opposing team then get 1 minute to ink the ground before returning to Spawn. During the last minute of the game, all teams are free from spawn and can only use their Special Weapons to secure victory. Choose your weapons wisely!

Target Acquired: Standard Turf War, but you can only use you Special Weapons to splat other players. No Sub Weapons allowed.

Enemy Spotted: Standard Turf War, but you can only use the Tenta Missles to splat other players.

Soda Pop: Standard Turf War, but you can only ink the ground using the Fizzy Bomb Sub Weapon.

Death From Above: Standard Turf War, but you can only splat other players with the Inkjet.

Wet Floor: Standard Turf War, but you are only allowed the Sprinkler Sub Weapon to Ink the ground.

Boomtown: Standard Turf War, but you can only splat other players using the Booyah Bomb.

Mine Field: Your team has 1 minute to ink the entire map as much as possible and set Ink Mines in random locations. When time is up, your team jumps to spawn and wait for the remainder of the game. The opposing team's goal is to get from their Spawn to Yours (or as close as possible) without tripping any Ink Mines. If a player trips an Ink Mine, they are considered "dead" and cannot move for the rest of the game. They are only allowed their Sub Weapons to get through. If a player trips an Ink Mine without being located, they are allowed to move forward. If the opposing team manages to get one or more players to the other side of the map without tripping any Ink Mines, they win the game!

Follow the Leader: Choose one person on your team to be the Leader. Your whole team must follow The Leader as a squad to ink the ground. If they activate their Special, so do you. If your Leader is splatted, all players jump to Spawn and wait for them to revive and start again. (Standard Turf War.)

- Game Modes that Only Work in Splatoon 2 -

Extreme Laser Tag: Standard Turf War, but you can only splat other players with the Sting Ray.

Pac-Man: Your team can only use Sub Weapons to ink the ground. The Opposing team can only use Main Weapons with the Ink Armor Special. If they activate their Specials at the same time... RUN! The enemy team is considered 'Invincible' and cannot be splatted until their Special runs out. (Standard Turf War.)

Bowling Balls: You can only splat other players using the Baller Special, but your whole team needs to activate it at the same time. (Standard Turf War.)

Bubble Gum: You can only splat other players using the Bubble Blower Special. (Standard Turf War.)

And that's all I got. For anyone who has a copy of Splatoon 2, I highly recommend trying these Game Modes there as you have a more variety of maps to play including the Shifty Stations from previous Splatfests. (Man I miss the Shifty Stations...)

I saw your rant about Strive and I hate to say, there are times that I feel like I'm in the same boat. I still absolutely love GG, especially the effect that it seems to have had on the FG community as of recent years by inspiring developers into experimenting more on what can be done to evolve the genre. That being said, Ishiwatari jumped the gun by stripping GG into its basic components just because he was afraid of frightening off the casual gamers.

If there's one thing I've learned it's this: Casual gamers will ALWAYS be casual. There is no changing that facet of gaming.

If you aren't good at a specific game or game genre, unless you decide to change your mind and put in the effort, you never will.

Fighting Games aren't a Religion... despite what others will tell you... but they are something that you practice by playing.

I didn't get in to GG because it was complex... I got in to GG because it had something in it FOR me to enjoy. The music, the technology, the world building, the characters...

Even if a game is complicated, and hard to learn... one thing I've learned after all the years of playing these games is... you don't NEED to learn everything all at once. There's no rushing this.

One day; five minutes pushing buttons learning a special move or a combo... another day; watching sprite animations and observing the timing of some moves.

All it really boils down to is five minutes of DOING SOMETHING. Something fun, something random...

And that isn't exclusive to fighting games, either... that's true of many games out there.

Game developers often have this paranoid mindset that they absolutely have to SELL their product and PUSH it out... but if your product is already SELLING... why change what's GOOD?

What makes a game like Guilty Gear better than Street Fighter?

For me... it wasn't the community... it was the developers.

The developers had fresh ideas... they were willing to take a risk and experiment with crazy concepts... they did new stuff ALL the TIME.

Guilty Gear Isuka is still ahead of its time with a ton of ideas it did...

Same could ALSO be said of Guilty Gear 2 Overture... despite what everyone else will say.

Others might say Street Fighter EX 3 was the best SF game in history... or Fighting EX Layer... or whatever else out there you obsess over.

Games like BlazBlue, Melty Blood, Arcana Heart, Skullgirls, Umineko, even Under Night In-Birth... they experiment with a TON of fresh ideas and concepts and bring out so much freedom that it's almost overwhelming.

But nonetheless... it is FREEDOM.

When players are given the freedom to express themselves while they play a game... it changes the entire pace of a battle.

It isn't just about Rock, Paper, or Scissors... it's about Earth, Ice, Fire, Wind, Lighting, Water, Ki... or whatever other elements you can think of on the fly.

"But this character plays exactly like THAT character... it's not new" I hear someone say in the back.

Maybe it's not NEW... but they have their own twists... and players will play the characters they enjoy on their own terms...

Even if a game has so much freedom that the balance is broken... I still think the game is still fun.

Balance is only significant when players insist on competing with RULES... but if there are no rules... there's more freedom.

But, even if a game has the options to be unbalanced... just as you have options to toggle boss characters "on" and "off".... you have the options to play in a "balanced" or "unbalanced" environment.

And that's REALLY what it ALL boils down to: OPTIONS.

Just as Kum Haehyun is a TUNER and can change the very nature of reality with the power of Tuning... Options give the player FREEDOM to CHOOSE...

I said it before, I'll say it AGAIN: the more Options Guilty Gear has... the MORE FUN IT WILL BE.

And, if you have plans on making your own fighting game... you best take this advice to heart as well!
