a lot has been said over the fact that LLMs dont actually understand the real world, just the statistical relationship between empty tokens, empty words. i say "empty" because in the AI's mind those words dont actually connect to a real world understanding of what the words represent. the AI may understand that the collection of letters "D-O-G" may have some statistical connection to "T-A-I-L" and "F-U-R" and "P-O-O-D-L-E" but it doesnt actually know anything about what an actual Dog is or what is a Tail or actual Fur or real life Poodles.

now, let me take a small tangent towards human understanding. specifically towards what philosophy has to say about it.

one of the classic problems philosophers deal with is, how do we know the world is real. how do we know we can trust our senses, how do we know the truth? many argue that we cant. that we dont really percieve the true world out there beyond ourselves. all we can percieve is what our senses are telling us about the world.

lets think of sight.

if you think about it, we dont really "see" objects, right? we just see the light that bounces off those objects. and even then we dont really "see" the photons that collide with our eye, we see the images that our brain generates in our mind, presumably because the corresponding photons collided with our eye. but colorblind people and people who experience visual hallucinations have shown that what we see doesnt have to always correspond with actual phisical phenomena occuring in the real world.

we dont see the real world, we see referents to it. and from the relationships between these referents we start to infer the properties of the actual world out there. are the lights that hit our eye similar to the words that the LLM is trained on? only a referent whose understanding allows it to function in the real world, even if it cant actually "percieve" the "real" world.

but, one might say, we dont just have sight. we have other senses, we have smell and touch and taste and audition. all of these things allow us to form a much richer and multidimensional understanding of the world, even if by virtue of being human senses they have all the problems that sight has of being one step removed from the real world. so to this i will say that multimodal AIs also exist. AIs that can connect audio and visuals and words together and form relationships between all of this disparate data.

so then, can it be said that they understand the world? and if not yet, is that a cathegorical difference or merely a difference of degree. that is to say, not that they cathegorically cant understand the world but simply that they understand it less well than humans do.

The room lay dark as no one dared to come in there, the nurses whispered among themselves. ❝ I'm not going in there, the sight of him makes me want to vomit. ❞ One of the nurses said. ❝ He's too aggressive for me, I can't handle the sight of his face. ❞ Another nurse said. They talked about how they were surprised the explosion didn't kill him and that poor girl Rachel had died. Harvey could hear them talking; he could hear everything that they were saying but he didn't care. Why should he care, maybe he should have died because then he could be with Rachel. He saw how uncomfortable the nurses got around him. How the doctor would sugarcoat their words when speaking with him, he would watch the news to see what would be done, his father's lucky coin rested on the bedside. Harvey had mixed feelings about his father who was a police officer a man who was sworn to protect those around him.

But in reality, his father was nothing about a violent alcoholic who would beat Harvey's mother with his nightstick. Even the GCPD was disrespectful towards his mother, but he was just a boy back then. What could he do? Harvey adored his mother. She always protected him and called him handsome despite his troubled childhood. He always got good grades in school and was respectful to his teachers.

The poor boy lost his mother when he was sixteen; he still didn't want to believe her death was a suicide, especially with his father lying dead in the bedroom with a gun; this is what led Harvey to get a law degree. He wanted to clean up crime and corruption so that no one would ever be hurt like his mother. He always won every case, and he felt like he was winning in life, especially when he had Rachel and wanted to make her his wife. But here he lay in the hospital bed, refusing skin grafts and medicine; sure, he was in pain, but the emotional trauma was far more painful. Why was he alive and not her? Harvey gripped the blankets and slammed his head back into the pillow over and over again grunting. ❝ Fuck! ❞ He screamed over and over again. ❝ Mr. Dent... ❞ A voice called from the doorway. Harvey turned his head seeing a woman holding a tray of medicine. ❝ I don't want any pain medicine, dammit I don't care how many of you come in here with medicine I don't want it! ❞ Harvey slowly sat up showing the left side of his face hoping to scare off the nurse.

❝ With all due respect, I know we can't force patients to take medicine. But you are not only in physical pain but emotional pain; you aren't thinking straight, and you need medicine. ❞ The nurse, walked up to the bed as she looked at Harvey and checked his IV bag. ❝ I'll be your new nurse since the others aren't treating you well and are bad-mouthing you. At Gotham General, we don't badmouth our patients or treat them like some type of monster...❞ The nurse glared as she fixed the IV. Harvey looked at the nurse's badge and name. ❝ (Y/N) (L/N).... ❞ Harvey said, looking back up at her. ❝ Yeah, that's me. ❞ (Y/N) smiled and plucked her name tag as she stepped back looking at Harvey. He was taken back a little that she wasn't scared of me or disgusted by his face; she had eye contact with him and showed no signs of discomfort. ❝ Want me to adjust your bed? ❞ She asked.

Harvey didn't realize how uncomfortable he was feeling because of the physical pain that was also caused by the bed; he slowly nodded his head while he continued to look at (Y/N). She smiled and grabbed the remote as she adjusted his bed. ❝ I heard about what happened I'm sorry for your loss. ❞ (Y/N) softly spoke. Harvey was tired of hearing sorry for your loss because Rachel shouldn't have been lost in the first place. ❝ But she's here, she's watching over you, she's happy you are alive, and I'm sure she wouldn't let you let the scumbags who did this think they got the best of you and that they won. ❞ (Y/N) said, as she began placing two pills in her hand and went to get Harvey some water. The scum of Gotham, indeed, would pay for Rachel's death and disfigurement. Harvey, this time, took the medicine that (Y/N). Not wanting her to leave, he asked if she could stick around and talk to keep him company and out of his own head.

Harvey and (Y/N) chatted as Harvey explained the reason the coin on the table was important and a little about his life. (Y/N), in return, opened up about her story. Especially how the mob killed her parents because her mother couldn't pay a loan that got higher and higher every time she missed the due dates. With fire and hate in her voice, she talked about how the GCPD let these mobsters go and these monsters roam free.

Harvey could sense her pain and anger it was something he felt to the core. When (Y/N) had to leave she told Harvey that she would be back to care for him and even visit him. And she did every day (Y/N) would go into Harvey's room and tend to him, give him pain medicine, and talk with him. The two would trade stories, and Harvey would make (Y/N) laugh; Harvey loved (Y/N) 's laugh; her sweet laughter reminded him how he would make Rachel laugh and smile. Slowly, Harvey would look forward to seeing (Y/N) that he didn't allow any other nurse to tend to him. He only wanted (Y/N) to tend to him, touch him, and give him medicine. Because at that moment (Y/N) was his nurse his girl who shared the same twisted black-and-white justice as him that criminal scum of Gotham needed to pain.

❝ Doll...? ❞ Harvey said, as (Y/N) was fixing Harvey's bed sheets. ❝ Yes, Harvey...? ❞ (Y/N) looked at him with her soft (e/c). ❝ Do you think I'm ugly? Do you believe I have a chance with any woman when I get out of this hospital, or should I get ready for a life of loneliness? ❞ Harvey looked at (Y/N) as she hit Harvey with a sharp, cold glare, which made Harvey shrink underneath her gaze. Did he say something wrong or make her uncomfortable? ❝ Harvey don't ever ask me a stupid question like that... ❞ (Y/N) walked up to him and took his hand in hers. ❝ Any woman should be lucky to have a man like you, Rachel was because you were willing to sacrifice your life to save her. You're beautiful Harvey...you're beautiful to me. ❞ (Y/N) gently squeezed his hand. ❝ You're beauty never ever scared me... ❞ (Y/N) took a seat as Harvey squeezed her hand. He thought no one could ever replace the hole that Rachel's death left in his heart but here (Y/N) sat building a home in his heart.

❝ I have another question, are those monsters who killed your parents still alive? ❞ Harvey asked. (Y/N) looked at him and nodded her head. ❝ Come here, lean in close doll~ ❞ Harvey told her. (Y/N) leaned in as Harvey whispered in her ear as the two still held hands Harvey's thumb rubbing the top of her hand. Nothing in that room could be heard but the TV. When Harvey finished, he looked at (Y/N) as she looked at him the two of them having a dark look; she stood up and cracked a grin as she nodded her head leaving the hospital room.

Later that night (Y/N returned, and no one questioned what she was carrying in a bag. As she walked to Harvey's room, she closed the door behind her. ❝ There's my doll, are you ready? Also, I love the look ❞ He asked,, sitting up. ❝ Of course Harv, the car is warmed up with all the supplies in the back. ❞ (Y/N) smirked as she wore a slim turtleneck dress one side was black and the other white. She opened up the bag, pulling out Harvey's old suit. One side looked undamaged, while the other side looked burnt. ❝ I got you some new shoes, let's get you out of here and begin your plan. ❞ (Y/N) said, walking over, ready to unhook Harvey. He grabbed her wrist as the two looked at each other. ❝ No doll, our plan. ❞ Harvey smirked as (Y/N) smirked back.

The doctor ran into the room with some nurses, hearing beeping from the machines. It was coming from the patient Harvey's Dent room, but when they rushed inside. Harvey was not there the only thing was a messy hospital bed and the gown on it. The doctor and the nurses made an alert that Harvey was missing, thinking he couldn't have done far. But they were oh so wrong; a car sped down the road. Inside the car, a coin flipped in the air as Harvey caught it and placed it on top of his hand. From Re-l's notebook a handwritten page can be seen in the first minutes of Meditatio I, those notes being:

flipping the image a few phrases can be read as: "The Party", "the legendary Brotherhood exist" "no way of coming together" "the force to destroy"

The source material is George Orwell's 1984, chapter I:

If there was hope, it must lie in the proles, because only there in those swarming disregarded masses, 85 per cent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated. The Party could not be overthrown from within. Its enemies, if it had any enemies, had no way of coming together or even of identifying one another. Even if the legendary Brotherhood existed, as just possibly it might, it was inconceivable that its members could ever assemble in larger numbers than twos and threes. Rebellion meant a look in the eyes, an inflexion of the voice, at the most, an occasional whispered word. But the proles, if only they could somehow become conscious of their own strength. would have no need to conspire...

𝚃𝚁𝙸𝙽𝙸𝚃𝚈

The parallels between The Matrix and Ergo Proxy are beyond the merely atmospheric. The similitude between their female protagonist, Re-L Mayer and Trinity, are quite popular domain in sci-fi fan circles. Not just the gothic-esque choice of black as main wardrobe color, but being essential for the main protagonist (Vincent Law and Thomas Anderson/Neo, respectively) who is also The One.

It's later revealed in both franchises that their female co-protagonist is essential in a long standing plan.

Meditatio II: the carriage of Raul Creed's Son

In Memory of Willie McCool

Willie McCool was an American naval officer and aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, and NASA astronaut, who was the pilot of Space Shuttle Columbia mission STS-107. Willie and the rest of the crew of STS-107 were killed when Columbia disintegrated during reentry into the atmosphere.

He's mentioned on several screens throgout the series, as well as the statue made in his memory at Lubbok.

Meditatio III: The filler text is all about McCool.

As an extra: McCool favorite band was Radiohead. The song Fake Plastic Trees, was also used as a Wake Up Song during the STS-107 mission.

FOLLOW THE WHITE RABBIT

On Meditatio III, VIncent tries to escape the hellish network of tunnels, maintenance routes and underground spaces that hold Romdeau. He's aided by the charismatic, now Cogito infected, Auto-rave Pino, with her cute pink rabbit pijama, in a somewhat allusion to Alice in Wonderland's White Rabbit.

Meditatio III: Pino Leading Vincent using the escpae route of the infected autoraves

Pino is later seen reading Alice in Wonderland and Alice Underground.

Meditatio VIII: Illustrated coloured copy of Alice in Wonderland. Illustrations by John Tenniel. Tematically, on this episode the encounter the remains of dome Charos (ハロス). The humans inhabitants of Charos are consumed in a sanguinary conflict with the residents of their twin dome Asura, following the nonsensical commands of their respective Proxy, not very different to the way the commands of the Red Queen were nonsensical.

On Romudo City, structural urban features receive the names of relevant historical writers and philosophers. The City is divided in at least nine sectors, several boreaughs, seven islands and the Mainland that holds the Central Tower of the Dome.

As seen in the city map, some streets, boroughs and parks are named after famous figures of western history, particularly literature and philosophy.

Due to the quality of the screen, a few of the names are not visible.

The most notable references are:

Rousseau Street as an homage to Jean Jacques Rousseau

Mainland Descartes as an homage to Rene Descartes

Machiavelli Road as an homage to Niccolo Machiavelli

Montesquieu Road, Louis Street, Charles Street and Secondat Street as a references to Charles Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu

The Film and the Public

Pino's unstoppable creativity is expressed on a drawing over one of Hoodie's book: The Film and the Public, written by Roger Manvell. The book aims to provide insights from both the filmmaker's and the audience's perspectives, making it a valuable resource for understanding the multifaceted nature of cinema in the mid-20th century. (That might explain some other references to XX century cinema)

Cruxified Snake

No copy of the book The Film and the Public I've seen have an illustration of a snake in a cross. That old alchemical and esoteric symbol is related to "fixing the volatile" and also The snake on the cross is a symbol of the crucifixion of Christ and the healing of sin.

Centzon Tōtōchtin

The ship that Pino and Vincent use to travel to Moscu is called "centzon tōtōchtin" or the 400 Rabbits, in reference to the aztec deities that are a group of divine rabbits who meet for frequent drunken parties.

Other minor characters in the series, particularly in Meditatio VIII have also names related to the deities.

Patecatl is the name of the commander of the fortress, whose people have been fighting for many generations with an army of self-reliant knights (they are called asuras).

Omacatl is the senior officer (lieutenant) of the fortress.

Mayahuel is a woman imprisoned in a prison (basement of a fortress) for her madness, in which she speaks of the moonlight, the “Master” and the impending fight.

On the myths:

Mayahuel – originally a goddess of fertility; patron of the drink octli, personification of the agave. From the marriage of Patecatl and Mayahuel were born the 400 rabbits.

Omacatl is the god of feasts and pleasures.

Patecatl – the god of healing, medicine, fertility and the alcoholic drink of agave, octli, the husband of Mayahuel.

Misquoting Victor Hugo

Just after rescuing Vincent and ten days after, Hoddie is reading aa book while quoting what he then attributes to the french poet Joë Bousquet:

The Man who Laughs is the story of Gwynplaine, who has a disfigured face and is torned between the society's expectation and his true nature.

The book has many adaptations over the years, but notably 1928's was the mos influential one, particularly for Conrad Veidt's performance as Gwynplaine.

On the decoration of Charos Dome, the symbol of the city closely resembles the mark of the Triple Goddess, a lunar female deity with interesting nexus with Robert Graves' studies on religious archetypes and myths of Europe.

Senekis being the "Agent of the Moonlight" is strongly associated with the moon.

Drifting into the Attack

This is a quite obscure one, from Meditatio XI and I actually can't find the proper source to this one. My main suspect is that is a reference of a song played by Allan Holdsworth and Gary Husband on a live presentation at 1982. Here is a youtube link into the song.

Allan Holdsworth appears later on a text wall on Meditatio XVII, that quotes an article about the musician from All About Jazz.
