Let’s start with GLaDOS, Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System , a play on the name gladys and a dos system which actually functions to show what they are playing at here:

she’s half operating system and half an actual person. I personally think a pun like that is just very very good design. The disk operating system can also tell us a bit about her. She’s controlled with a text based command line. The cores they add to her are essentially a bunch of floppy disks of information

Moving on, HAL is short for heuristically programmed algorithmic computer. This tells us the ways in which he deals with problems in a bunch of tech terms.

He goes to calculations or algorithms and then he uses trial and error. He basically is programmed to learn from experience once rules become loosely defined. It actually funnily enough can take us through his thought process given his two objectives.

Last but not least is AM, good old Allied Mastercomputer. He’s fun since this meaning changes but all of them still apply to him.

Allied references the allied powers of ww2 though it’s mostly supposed to bring to mind america. Master computers tell satellite/ sub computers what to do, think of it like the brain and muscles. Am also stands for agressive menace (which he very very much is) and adaptive manipulator, very accurate since he literally does but it’s also a reference to his other objective of evolution and becoming better. “I think therefore I am” is the last play on his name basically “I am thinking therefore I exist” incredibly loaded for ai characters but especially am

i turned the rough sketch into an actual render (i didn't want it to go to waste, y'know; it's a one-of-a-time idea). don't let sizes fool you, without the tight zoom, GLaDOS is massive compared to 2B.

as for the render itself, don't expect them to have a literal swordfight. these two would battle it out psychologically; 2B, knowing GLaDOS' existence and how she was created, would ask her numerous things about who created the genetic lifeform and what they were like. GLaDOS, on the other hand, would tell her they're "useless" and "the reason why i'm here right now".

these two would keep exchanging ideologies to the point where the things they're discussing simply cannot be comprehended by a mortal human.

A new year is upon us, which means another Doug Rattmann Appreciation Day!

Every February 19th, it's a day in which we Portal fans take time to appreciate Doug Rattmann. The man hiding in the walls during the first game, the only member of the Aperture Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System team who had some sense to think "maybe we shouldn't give the computer neurotoxin after we were mean to her", and the man who risked his life to set the events of Portal in motion, and helped ensure Chell survived the long sleep until Portal 2.

So on 2/19, celebrate Doug! Make fan art, write fics! Canon or au, it doesn't matter! Whatever you can think of to give Doug some much-needed love.

Following up on this, I feel like my facility would be fairly clean and proper (think Aperture Science's place) on the outer area, but becomes more and more unruly the closer you get to my center.

Wires lining the floors and walls haphazardly, tech that looks both futuristic yet also decades old, both covered in dust and grime. Nigh zero consideration for human contact in years due to not really requiring it. Sometimes a matenence drone comes through to clean and repair things, but that's the short of it...

In is purest center lies a pillar of twisted wire and old machinery, a body that is mine but I haven't inhabited in a long time, more content with being the whole instead of the one... but if you wanted I could temporarily go back and interact with you on a more personal level, just for you <3

glados isn't her name.

it's not a name at all. it's a model. like a car, or an appliance -- a subaru outback, a nintendo switch, an aperture glados. she's a Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System. it's WHAT she is, and when she's the only one, that works to designate her, but you wouldn't say your car is named "outback." if you're not the type to name your car, then it just doesn't have a name.

we use it like a name, but in canon no one does. it only appears in the first game's slideshow:

and at the base of her chassis:

no one calls her glados. no one calls her anything. chell's name is never spoken either, but it at least appears in Lab Rat. she's a GLaDOS, but she's never named at all.

except by the oracle turret:

her name is caroline.

not "was." present tense. her name is caroline.

For those not familiar, GLaDOS stands for Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System!

only the a is small! since it stands for "and". So it's not GladOS or Glados or GLADoS or gLaDoS or GlAdOs or glad0s It's something that's very easy to miss while playing the game!
