Where did abyssal merfolk evolve? Like geographically speaking?
i'm pretty vague about it because i DESPERATELY need to actually make a map of merfolk species (and, specifically, how they spread and speciated as a group from their point of origin in east asia), including making more solid estimates of what time they became coastal and then became more dedicated marine organisms and the ecology of those areas as they did so...
but, regardless, i have always imagined abyssals specifically originating in the western side of the pacific ocean, with a bias towards the southern pacific. they likely came from a much smaller founder population and their spread was pretty restrained throughout their history, not really the dense populations that other species of merfolk were establishing nor the globe-trotting migratory habits of others, but decently stable in their specific niche. certainly less spread into adjacent communities of pacific migratory merfolk, or even pacific reef merfolk, at least compared to the rates that other species at that time would filter out into mixed communities. (ironic, considering the other species in their genus are "grouper" merfolk, with a much wider spread and lower densities, but very commonly in areas with established populations of other species of merfolk.)
i know their capital city was intended to be one of these long-term settlements for abyssals, although the specific group of abyssals which would later found and become the merkingdom didn't originate in that area — it's just gone through so many ship of theseus layers that very little of that origin remains, anymore, and the original group(s) of abyssals who founded and lived within it pre-merkingdom have since gone extinct as a culture...
probably a lot of their settlements from the pre-merkingdom eras are entirely uninhabited in the current day, or are mostly kept as combined archeological sites + castle grounds for some lineages of low royals, or just otherwise get made into singular sites for specific merkingdom uses, not really proper towns or cities, not anymore. at least one or two of them got recouped by that one religion that i need to make a specific name for, who were influenced a lot by advancements in merfolk understanding of deep time and tend to worship sites of major events in that evolution of life itself. some of their other cities are still inhabited, though, usually those more easily accessible by other merfolk.

Look closely at that bottom graph. The top 20% have close to 80% of the wealth. This means this distribution follows the 80/20 rule, or Pareto Principle. This is a remarkably durable result across many different income and wealth measures since Pareto observed it in Italian land ownership distribution in 1906. My understanding is that something like this distribution will occur for any power law distribution though it might be 90/5 or 70/40. And power law distributions are incredibly common. Anytime having income or wealth is correlated with an ability to get more income or wealth (as it is in any market system where people can invest their wealth in income generating schemes - or in systems which monetize attention and people are more likely to pay attention to what their friends are paying attention to) we should expect a distribution pretty similar to this one.
Said another way: Australia has the same Gini Coefficient (a measure of income inequality) as Sudan. One of those places is a much better place to live for those in the bottom 20%. No one should be trying to replicate Sudan's low levels of inequality.
Focusing on inequality to the exclusion of the experience of those at the bottom of the distribution is a mistake.
Dude, the enemy is not "the group of people who can afford a nice house and car and take vacations and eat well and have enough saved for retirement."
The enemy is the group of people who make it IMPOSSIBLE for EVERYONE to have a nice house and car and take vacations and eat well and save enough for retirement.
In the US, "poor people" USED to be the people who had not-so-nice houses and cars, or who had to rent instead of own. And it's not the dentist down the street who changed that; among others, it's the ultra-rich CEOs and shareholders who refuse to pay a living wage so they can live off your labor, and the exploitative corporations that buy up as much housing as they possibly can and charge exorbitant rent so you'll never be able to own your own home. It's the bosses who decide that "excess" food must be destroyed if it cannot be sold at a price that enriches shareholders. And it's the politicians who encourage and enable all of that.

15 Countries with the Largest White Populations Worldwide
White people make up between 11 and 16 percent of the world’s population and are found all over the world. In comparison to the global population of Asian descent, which is about 4.6 billion, and the Black population, which is roughly 1.9 billion, this is a significant reduction. Despite their influence on human history, the proportion of white populations in the global population is shrinking…
