Casual reminder that The Trevor Project supported KOSA; so yes, while their bottom line is helpful to trans youth (& unfortunately only anyone under a certain age), their top execs were supporting bills like KOSA not but a few months ago so be weary of that organization. Donate directly to trans people instead if you can or to Friends of Trevor and other more honest & reputable organizations. Though preferably directly to trans people in need.

When I think about Fates getting called a bad story, the first thing I think of is how everyone claiming that fixing Nohr's famine would have solved the war just. completely ignores Anankos's background influence planning to make things worse. If it wasn't the famine, it would have been something else, anything else Anankos could use to further his goals of ruining both Hoshido and Nohr - and that's compelling writing because it shows that it's not a easy fix as some would like it to be. It's strange how so many simplify the core conflict into making little sense because they keep acting like a greater evil behind things is somehow a 'ass pull' or distraction?
That's the thing though, people would then just pivot to the "well it sucks that Fates' problems are caused by a random problems dragon that's only revealed in one route", to which I argue... well, sorta kinda?
The main core of Fates' story is that the conflict is so unreasonable, destructive and meaningless, to the point where even questioning it has people resistant. It's about removing the barrier between two flawed kingdoms that have no reason to keep fighting, and only benefit when they exist in harmony with each other. Anankos' influence is representative of that illogical premise. What else could be making two groups of people fight over more than what they could solve without warfare, other than a crazed, despotic and resentful figure of power who wants to drag the rest of the world down with him?
Revenge, famine, resources, defense from invasion, isolationism, jealousy and pride, etc... all of these provide reason for conflict, but not one that lasted since the age of godly dragons. Only another ambitious and godly dragon could halt progress and change to that degree.
I know the common critique of FE stories in general is that "well, the problems get solved by beating big scary dragon and that sucks", but the point of those final bosses isn't that every problem is solved. Honestly, the point is never just "beat bad dragon the end." The point is that you were able to unify around a cause despite differing backgrounds, and because of that, change is then starting to develop in the epilogues (and can happen in supports, base conversations, etc.) The final bad dragon is the last step of the journey, with said journey being the actual fix to whatever issues are plaguing the protagonist's party. It's a narrative-gameplay tool.

The Mephadow crumbs from Shadow Generations still make me insane
Like Shadow is going through one of those moments (what will become lowkey routine by the time he's faced with infinite) where someone who's fighting him and is actively his enemy seems to know him and be obsessed with him. And not only does he not know who this bitch is, he doesn't like him and doesn't enjoy being fixated on. On top of that, even if he DID remember him he'd still be opposed to him.
Meanwhile you have Mephiles who (despite having actually liked Shadow) is fighting for his right to exist again. And you know it would be okay enough if his thirst to exist makes it easy for him to forget how he felt about Shadow, or if he turned to revenge again after what happened in Sonic 06. But nope! Yeah he's fighting Shadow desperately for his right to exist, but he fuckin. He offers to spare Shadow. He's fighting him because he has to, but he still wants him if he can have him.
So imagine being Shadow like "Who tf is this guy and how does he know me", and then Mephiles who was just thinking "maybe this is some joke of fate. It is my second chance" and is now crying internally because Shadow "forgot" him again
Mephiles: So we meet again, Shadow!
Shadow: Who tf are you. Whatever. I'll beat your ass
Mephiles, internally: 🥲 Again?
Mephiles, externally: So you've forgotten me again, have you?
Mephiles, later: I might consider sparing you, you know
Shadow: Ha. No.
Mephiles, externally: Oh, Shadow, how disappointed I am. Truly disappointed!
Mephiles, internally: Seriously, rejected again?🥲

"I can't."
a simple sentence that frustrated me to hell on my first watch. "what, that's it? why aren't you saying anything else to her? couldn't you explain?"
see, a lot (even me, initially) have interpreted his words as simply just:
"I can't give the chip because I can't let you expose the truth to the public." (they stop there.)
and this might've been the moment people accused him of becoming a corrupt government lapdog - whatever you name it. a year later however, it became clear to me (after reading tons of character studies about Leon lmao) that these words were meant to be interpreted as:
"I can't give the chip because I can't let you get hunted down by the government. I almost lost you, so I can't let you do this. I don't want you to die."
he mentioned it before to Shen Mei, who shared the same sentiments as Claire: "if I do that [give you the chip], you'll have every agent in the US hunting you." I couldn't help but wonder: if Leon -does- give the chip to Claire, is there a possibility that he'll also be assigned by the gov't to hunt her down too?
in the case of Claire: I've seen people say she was being immature, but think about it: she had seen the horrors of Raccoon City and witnessed what Sherry had been through. because of that, she dedicated her life to helping victims of bioterrorism. she has always been swift to justice, albeit reckless and driven by emotion. to me, it might've seemed like she did have an idea of what consequences there would be in store for her; but if it meant exposing the truth to the public and stopping another RC incident, she would put her life at risk.
that's just the way Claire is. and Leon understands. he knows. but his desire to protect her is stronger than I personally expected. and I don't even mean this from a shipping standpoint; this is also just the way Leon is when it comes to life itself.
it's impossible to save everyone. he knows that better than anyone else. yet he persists. time and again, he gave up his security, his safety, to save someone else. this time, it's no different.
he knows she's disappointed, and of course he's not fine with it (who would?). but it's okay for her to walk away from him, as long as she's alive and safe. as long as he can protect her, that's all that matters.

Hot Take: Luke's fatal flaw should have been a sense/drive for justice. He has been shown to get angry for the behalf of others multiple times when they were done wrong. He rages and hates perceived injustice, and wants to make it right. It makes one righteous, and fight for the right thing. Yet if you overdo it it'll easily have you adopt a "The Ends Justify The Means", making you focused purely on getting your justice. And the the possible damage in your wake. IDK I just think it would feel the theme of fatal flaws a lot better, and also have Luke parallel Percy more. Their flaw is a generally positive trait, the danger comes from overdoing it.
