Japan Housing Websites (part one)

Want to move to Japan? Me too! Lately I’ve seen a lot of Instagram pages dedicated to showing off cheap homes in Japan. These pages usually just link back to a Japanese real estate website, so I’d like to list some handy vocabulary to help you navigate the sites and find some houses on your own!

Note: This post was made with intermediate level Japanese learners in mind. It's meant to be a vocabulary list with visual examples, not an all-inclusive house buying guide. A complete list of vocab words can be found at the end of the post. For general website navigation, I’d recommend the RikaiChan / RikaiKun extensions which will display a translation of each word you mouse over.

What Websites?

I really like SUUMO, so that will be the site I use for the example pictures. But any website will have more or less the same words!

Navigating the Website

[ 1 ]　Creating an Account会員（かいいん）登録（とうろく）：Member Registration

[ 2 ]　Search探す（さがす）：Search / Find This word will come up a lot! The search function may also appear as... 検索（けんさく）：Search 物件（ぶっけん）検索：Property Search

Suumo has a nifty map on the front page. If you know the region you'd like to search in, you can choose it here.

[ 3 ]　Renting 借りる（かりる）：Rent (Borrow) 賃貸（ちんたい）：Lease / Rent

[ 4 ]　Purchasing買う（かう）：Buy

[ 5 ]　House Terminology If you've taken a Japanese class, you may have learned that the Japanese word for house is 家 or いえ. Unfortunately, this short and simple word isn't used much on real estate websites. The following terms are typically used instead.

一戸建て（いっこだて）：Detached Building A standalone house, as opposed to an apartment or condo.

新築（しんちく）一戸建て：New Buildings

中古（ちゅうこ）一戸建て：Old Buildings 中古 can mean "old", "used", or “secondhand”, none of which sound ideal, but all it means is that the house that has been lived in previously. This is where you find the cheap ones!

Finding Houses

Once you have the region and building type selected, you’ll see a new map you can use to select the prefecture. I'll highlight a few key search methods on this screen.

Click on a prefecture to bring up a checklist of cities and districts. At the bottom of the list, you'll see two options: refining the search further or proceeding with the checked options.

Fantasy Guide to Royal and Noble Jewellery

Royal and Noble jewellery is a staple of their life, a statement of the who is person is, their rank and their wealth. Jewellery simply isn't a accessory, it's an exercise in showmanship and a way to link to a past.

(Disclaimer: Many stones in pieces often have a bloody past, usually stolen or worked from the earth under the reign of Colonialism. It is best to always take this into account when admiring real world pieces)

Providence

Jewellery like this is usually inherited buy can also be bought or even given as a gift. There is three kinds of jewellery in this instance: private, owned by the crown or owned by the state.

Private jewellery is owned by a single person and worn or lent at their own descretion. Private jewellery can be no less grand than state owned jewellery. This jewellery can be inherited by anybody the owner chooses.

State jewellery is not privately owned, it belongs to the country itself. It is not inherited but used by royal family. If a royal family is deposed, the jewellery remains with the state. Such as the French Crown Jewels.

Owned by the Crown means that it can only pass monarch to monarch, worn only by consorts or the monarch and lent to anybody they choose.

Noble jewellery is not quite the same. Much of it is owned privately but there may be one or two pieces designated as official jewellery for the title such as a specific tiara.

The Rules

Jewellery like this are not just trinkets to be borrowed by anybody. Usually the monarch (or titled noble) or sometimes the spouse, is in charge of designating who can be lent which pieces and for what occasion. Even if you are a super close member of the family, you still have to take what's on offer. Sometimes certain jewellery is worn exclusively by a certain rank say the Queen or the noble themselves and would not be offered to anybody else. For example, you will note that into today's royalty you will see certain royals repeating the same tiaras such as Kate Middleton who has only worn the Cambridge Lover's Knot, the Strathmore Rose Tiara, the Lotus Tiara and once, the Cartier Halo Tiara. These would be the tiaras available to them, which usually number only a handful. Certain pieces are designated by for the monarch/Consort as well, the Vladimir Tiara & the Girls of Britain and Ireland Tiara only graced the head of the Queen in her reign. Other pieces such as earrings or bracelets would also be distributed accordingly, more elaborate and expensive pieces would be worn by the higher ranking members. Certain collections are meant to be passed on, such as the Consort's jewels but many Dowager refused to pass on their jewels such as Empress Dowager Maria Feodorovna after the death of Tsar Alexander III.

Treasure Trove

Now, just because a family has a throne or a grand title doesn't mean they have caches of jewels. Many noble families sold off their pieces to pay death duties, most only have a few pieces left today. As for tiaras most noble families would not have access to large quantities, usually only affording one or two. The Spencers for example own two, the Spencer Tiara and the Spencer Honeysuckle Tiara. This is an inaccurate protrayal in Downton Abbey, as the family have at least 6 but then again Cora is a Dollar Princess so it could be possible to own as many but it never made sense considering just how many times they almost loose the estate and never sell any off. Royal families are not exempt from this either, some families have vast stores of jewels such as the British Royal Family (I wonder where those all came from...) while the Greek Monarchy (discontinued) has only a few pieces. The Romanov collection is of course legendary and we may never know it's full extent.

CAREER AND ASTROLOGY

I've found it is easy to see people's inclinations in terms of future careers in birthcharts. Most people would look at the MC. But I'm here to tell you that is wrong. Or at least, possibly could. I'm going to explain. In the past, there wasn't things as careers. Most kids inherited their parent's jobs and the ones who could afford it, turned to hobbies like writing, philosophy and etc. As so, people would be known by their "job" (even if they didn't make a living out of it like a lot of writers and philosophers from the past).

This could also take another turn. There are the money houses and then there is the 10th house. The 10th house isn't a money house, it is the service you give to society, (again another thing you would be known for). But lately we have associated this house with career, as now it is something we give back to community (since if nobody worked, society would stop working). So if you want you can also take a look at your 10th house.

The 2nd house is mostly associated with money and resources. So we are going to mostly look at that house and also at the chart ruler (planet that rules your ascendant).

Note: I would like to point out there are other money houses: the 5th (money won from contests, bets, gambles, etc) , 8th (money from other people, like inheritances, taxes, borrowed) , and 11th (gains from profession)

My HCs for the Haikyuu pro characters post-retirement careers

Hinata - He will coach a former powerhouse college volleyball team that's having a rough few years, and guide them to a national championship title.

Kageyama - He will play volleyball until his coach tells him to "please retire already," then he'll be on a bachelor type dating show where he'll try his very best to be a good reality tv star but it'll be painfully obvious that he has no idea what's going on half the time. It will be the highest rated season of the show. Eventually he'll become a trophy husband who spends his days playing volleyball in the seniors league.

Bokuto - He will start a TikTok account where he does volleyball trickshots.

Atsumu - He will play volleyball until he gets a career ending injury. Afterwards, he'll try out a bunch of different career paths, but the one that ends being the most successful is underwear modelling.

Sakusa - His rich family will set him up with a nice job.

Ushijima - Volleyball trainer for the JNT (not the coach and not the athletic trainer, but the guy who comes in and critiques everyone's form.)

Hoshiumi - He will become a very passionate volleyball commentator.

Aran - He'll go to college for a few years before joining the JNT as a coach. Atsumu will still be on the team by the time he starts coaching. He will have a standing offer to join the FIVB as an official, and every day with Atsumu will bring him closer to accepting that offer.

Oikawa - He will coach in Argentina. He will also have two lovely, talented but unambitious children who will frustrate him, but he'll love them dearly anyway.

Yaku - He's gonna go into sales or real estate and make a killing.

Min Soo held back from smirking, and so she cleared her throat. “Why are you so…” she trailed off as if trying to find the right words. “Out of it?” Her brows pulled together as she feigned concern. “Did something happen between you and Moon?”

"Focus on the task, Min Soo," Jimin’s voice cut through the air like tempered steel, his gaze locking onto hers with steely resolve. "Remember why you're here and remember your place."

Inwardly, Min Soo seethed at the quiet dismissal, yet her expression remained serene. It was a mask perfected through years of maneuvering in the club’s labyrinthine power dynamics. "Of course," she murmured as if chastened, though in truth, her resolve only hardened. She saw beneath Jimin’s exterior turmoil, recognized the fractures in his ironclad demeanor. As you’re from the DC area, I’m trying to write a book with a character working in the area but I’m unsure where to have her live as she has to commute to Bethesda and to DC while her partner commutes to DC and Falls Church - where would you recommend having them live?

Well, there’s the easy answer and the realistic answer. Which do you prefer?

If it’s the realistic answer, you’ll need to answer a few more questions, if you don’t mind (and feel free to DM if you want to keep it closehold!).

What kind of work do they do? Where do they work? (Are they doctors? FBI? Real estate? Lawyers? etc.)

Do they have money and if so, are they comfortable? Wealthy? Struggling?

Are they DINKs or are there children? If there’s kids, how many?

Do they have cars or do they use public transit?

What part/s of DC do they work?

An insider’s tip so you can see where I’m going with this: there’s an investment “rule” here in the DMV area - depending on where/what you want to invest, that guides where you live. You can invest in house, in car, or in time. Meaning:

If you invest in your house (or apartment or condo), then your money is going into your housing so you’re more likely to live within the city and walk/use public transit to get around.

If you invest in your car, then your money is going to car maintenance, gas, tolls, getting stuck in traffic. You’re more likely to live out in the suburbs and drive to work.

If you invest in time, then you can live anywhere but you commute into the city through vanpools, trains, and slug lines.

That your characters are working in two different places each tells me that they’re probably investing in cars, right? Because Falls Church is an exurb and if you’re working/living in an exurb, it’s going to take at least an hour to get anywhere outside of your immediate local area. (I know, it all looks very close on a map but maps don’t show the volume of people that live here.) And also if they’re bouncing back and forth and around the city, you’re gonna need a car or at least a hefty uber account, because you’re not going to waste your time relying on public transit.

Reader is a former yacht girl now newly moved to Turin, Italy for her job as a real-estate accountant. There she meets Dusan Vlahovic, a former client of hers, a client she never thought to see again. However, with Dusan being Readers new boss their past becomes a liability. Nevertheless the spark between them still lives. This story is a romcom with both His and Her POV!

The car ride wasn't awkward, it was just quiet. So quiet.

Dusan drove with confidence, one hand on the steering wheel. You watched him maneuver his car through the streets of Turin. The night was young. People roamed the streets with a hymn for the weekend. You on the other hand, was planning for a weekend featuring a desperate search for a new job. It was strange to be cramped into a space with the cause of your problems. He seemed so at peace however, zoned out from reality. Perhaps he hadn't picked up the documents yet. Then he would've know that you were quitting on him.

"Is it the first building or the second one?"

"Huh?"

You were brought out of your head as Dusan turned the corner, the car already rolling onto the streets of your apartment complex.

Dusan turned his head, seeing that he had lost you for a second. He smiled and did not mind repeating himself. "Should I drop you off here or over there?" He asked.

"Oh. Right. Over there." You pointed to the tall building shielded by the one you were currently parked by. Dusan took his foot of the break and let the car roll down the hill. Slowly. Almost as if he was biding his time.

"Strange." He scuffed. "I own this whole block of apartments but I've never once made it past the second floor in neither of them."

"Very strange." You nodded, eager to get out of the car. Dusan must have noticed this, because as soon as the car stop rolling and your hand streched for the doorhandle, a hand went to stop you from leaving.

"Dusan?" You frowned, looking down at his hand that lay flat against your thigh. He pulled it away seeing the startled look on your face, but that did not stop him from staring at you as if the whole world had gone dark and you were the only light left in it to guide him.

"I really am sorry." He said, his throat moving when he swallowed. "For being an asshole. I really am."

"I believe you." You batted your eyes, quite taken aback by how sincere he came across. As if he really cared about what you thought of him.

"You must understand my position in this. If someone were to find out about our past." He swallowed once more. "About what happened in Miami....."

"They won't." You nodded. "Don't even worry about it, because..."

"You're leaving me, I know." He sounded unhappy by the fact. Nevertheless he had found your two weeks notice amongst the documents and now the cat was out of the bag.

You sat back in the passenger seat, your gaze held ahead of you. "It's for the best."

He chuckled.

"What's so funny?" You turned to look at him. He was looking ahead, hands still clenching the steering wheel. In the light coming down from the apartments above you noticed it, his dimples. He also had a carved jaw, strong and set to crush lesser men's dreams. He was beautiful, but you already knew that. And the smell of him, it was awfully familiar, invading your nostrils as he leaned towards you.

"Hey, you okay?"

He touched you again. A light stroke with his fingers nipping your chin. He wanted you to meet his eyes.

"Dusan I..."

"Yes?"

"I...."

You were so lost in it all. The smell of him, his touch. It brought back memories. Good ones.

"Do you want to come up with me....?"

The dent between his brow made you unsure of yourself.

"For tea." You clarified. Who doesn't want tea?

Dusan's hand let go of your chin, along with his gaze that also faltered. It looked to be regret.

"Or don't come up for tea, it's whatever."

You hurried with the belt, fumbling terribly.

"Y/N?"

There was a slight drop from the car down to the ground, making you stumbled on your way out.

"Y/N?"

You tipped toe on your heels, moving quickly towards the entrance to your building. You felt embarrassed to the point of wanting to duck under your bed covers. Matter of fact, it's the first thing you'd do when confined between the safe walls of your apartment.

"Y/N, wait!"

Dusan was out of the car, quickly trailing your steps. You turned around to find him inches away from you, his chest rising with his heavy breathing.

"What?" You demanded, quite rude of you.

"I'm not sure I'm allowed to park here." He said, to which you frowned. "Huh?"

"The car." He pointed. "I don't know how long I'm allowed to stand here. But if we're having tea I should find a better place to park, no?"

Heat rose to your face as you were blushing pathetically. "You...you want to come up for tea?"

"Of course." He said, almost insulted that you'd think underwise. But then his face softened. "If you'll still have me?"

The warmth that spread through your body lingered and did not go away. You didn't want it to go away, not now, not ever. "Leave it here." You said, nudging your head towards the Range Rover.

"But won't I get a ticket?"

You search your bag for your keys, pressing, the tag to the entrance for it to open. "Don't worry, I know the owner of this place."

"You do?"

You held the door open for Dusan, but he was hesitant to enter.

"Yes, however he's a real asshole."

The corner of his lip tugged into a smile. Dusan looked to you in wonder, perhaps not sure of what to make of you. "You're a real smartass, you know that right?"

"I take that as a complement, thank you."

You slipped inside and let the door shut behind you. You were glad to see that Dusan was tracing his steps behind you.

She was well into telling him about her plans for the place. How she wanted to repaint the kitchen and buy a brand new couch for the living room. Dusan however, was well into planning on when to take a day off from work, and where in Turin one could buy good paint. The best paint, since Y/N deserves it all.

"And then I'm sort of planning to remodel the bathroom. But I'm not sure how long that will take now that I'm..." She paused abruptly, staring blankly at him as they sat across from each other in the small but cozy kitchen, tea cups in hand.

"Now that you're what?" He asked, cooking his head with curiosity.

"It's nothing, nevermind." She said, and withdrew herself.

Dusan frowned. "No. Come on. Tell me. What's stopping you from renovating your new bathroom?"

She blushed. She tired to hide it but Dusan caught her flushed expression before she bowed her head. "Well I am sort of on the market..." She mumbled.

Dusan frowned. "On the market for what?"

She inhaled deeply, raising her head to meet his eyes. "For a new job, Dusan."

"Right. " He sighed and took a long sip of his tea. It was cold by now.

"I'm not even sure I can get a new job in the city." She continued. "I might even have to move to another town."

Dusan worried about the distress in her voice, the distress that he had caused. "It won't be necessary." He interrupted.

She frowned. "What won't be necessary?"

Dusan hated how she could paralyze him with one gaze. How one stern look from her made him question his whole identity. His whole manhood. "You won't have to quit your current job." He explained. "That is, if we keep our distance."

It would be hard, avoiding her. He could move her office to another floor. However the other employees would wonder why, especially Louisa. But what if he moved his office to another floor? Yes. He would do that for her. If it guaranteed that she'd stay. Stay with him.

"And if we don't?"

Her words echoed through the kitchen like a stoic citation. It lingered in the air as Y/N, kept her eyes on Dusan, waiting for him to answer her.

"If we don't?" He repeated with a raised brow.

"I mean..." She tried to refrace the question but the damage was already done. Y/N rolled her eyes. "I didn't mean it like that."

He smirked. "But you did."

"Don't get ahead of yourself." She stood, collecting their cups of tea even if Dusan's wasn't empty. She brought the dishes to the sink, dumping them inside. She turned to face him with an expression that clearly stated that their night was over.

Dusan did not protest, nor went against her desire for him to leave. But then he thought of something she had said. "As a yacht girl...." Her eyes widened with that sentence, not expecting him to bring up the subject. "You don't get paid to...you know?" He had no better way of saying it. "...you know?"

Y/N arched her brow. "Have sex with people?"

He nodded. "Yes."

"No. Like I said, I'm only paid to keep people company. Those are the rules."

Dusan nodded. Not sure if he believed her. He came around the kitchen table, approaching the sink. "But you had sex with me." He said, to which she sighed.

"Yes, Dusan. I had sex with you."

"So you broke a rule then?"

Her expression furrowed, not sure what he was playing at. Nevertheless, she carefully watched him approach the sink, stopping as he eventually stood before her.

"Why did you break a rule for me, Y/N?"

She snorted. "God, you're so full of yourself." She turned her back on him, preparing to do do the dishes, turning on the water. She gasped when Dusan pressed against her. His front against her back. He went to turn off the running water and the newfound quiet enhanced the sound of her aroused panting.

"Tell me the truth." He whispered, his voice in her ear. "You fucked me, even though you didn't have to."

"I wanted to." She moaned, her body slumped down against his chest, his stiff erection poking her in the ass.

"Why?" He demanded answers. "He demanded to know that it was true, that she had wanted him as much as he had wanted her."

"Because I like you."

Dusan turned her over, forcing her to face him. Her forhead knocked against his and Dusan grunted as his erection was now growing against the breach of her entrance, forcing her to shift her stans. "You like me." He chuckled. She spoke in present terms.

"Is that so hard to believe?"

He raised his head, her eyes on him. She was beautiful, staring up at him with innocence. Completely unaware of how desperate he was to tear her to pieces.

"If you only knew how much I want you too." He groaned.

She grinned. "I think I might have an idea."

Her hand slipped between them, searching for the length of him, squeezing it through his pants. Dusan stumble forward and groaned into her mouth. They came together with force, Dusan having to control himself not to knocked the back of Y/N's head against the cupboards.

Her arms wrapped around his neck, deepening the kiss. It was shamless and the consequences that followed would be severe. But right then and there, as Dusan's hands squeezed the curve of her ass, pressing her harder against his aching cock, he couldn't care less about the consequences. Tomorrow might as well not come. He would fuck her as if they only had tonight.
