a/n: a short series, as requested via ask. thank you for the inspiration. also, there may be some links throughout this story because i'm extra and what you to have the visuals in case my descriptions are lacking, they're not my strong suit. enjoy! word count: 2,363 [ master list here ]

Summary: After a horrendous on set experience with famous actor Hwang Hyunjin, you hope to never work with him again. But when you're cast as his onscreen love interest and forced to bond, everything you once believed about him changes. One minute you’re professionals just pretending, then the lines start to blur, and suddenly, you’re not.

Prologue

JULY 23rd, 2023

Your stomach is in knots as you arrive on location for the commercial you’ve been cast in—the first paid acting gig you’ve nabbed. Just as an extra, but still, you’re all smiles as you marvel at the camera, lights, and crew running around. The chaos of it all adds to the excitement you’re feeling.

The premise of the commercial (for some luxury fragrance brand) involves a man and a woman who share a moment on the street. The woman takes the handkerchief from his suit pocket before turning around and walking away down an alley. The man chases after her, only to discover twenty women wearing the exact same outfit. As he tries to find her, he’s swarmed by the other women instead.

Not the best narrative, when you really think about it…it’s kind of insinuating all women are the same and will lust over a desirable man, who will then succumb to their advances. But now is not the time in your career where you can decline projects based on the message it’s pushing. Rent is quite literally due.

You need this.

You’re standing off to the side with a few other extras after getting dressed and having your hair and makeup done, gossiping about who the stars of the commercial are. IU? Park Bo-gum?

The female lead is the first to arrive—Seo Ye-ji. She bares a wide smile as she politely bows and greets everyone on her way to hair and makeup. When she reemerges dressed in the same outfit, you and the other girls do your best to contain your excitement.

The director calls everyone over, since several of the shots can be completed without the male lead. You watch Ye-ji film, in awe at her work ethic. She nails everything on the first take.

“Alright, extras. Veils on!” The assistant director calls.

You and the other girls put your veils on and stand with your backs to the camera. When action is called, you all proceed down the alleyway with Ye-ji blending in amongst you.

When the director has run through all the shots he can complete without the male lead, everyone is left waiting around for him to show up.

The clock is ticking—not that you’re complaining, you’re getting paid by the hour. But as Ye-ji’s assistant talks about needing to make other engagements, you can tell the director is growing anxious and it becomes apparent this isn’t normal.

Suddenly, the director shouts, “Get him to hair and makeup, now!”

You turn to see who it is you’ve been waiting on and your mouth drops open.

Hwang Hyunjin.

Both of the girls on either side of you reach down and grab your hands—sharing in the surprise of who’s air you’re breathing as quietly as possible whilst squeezing each other’s hands to death.

Ye-ji is beautiful, there’s no doubt about that.

But Hyunjin? A fucking ethereal glow surrounds his frame as he glides through set. He commands the attention of the room, but he doesn’t make eye contact with anyone as he passes by. He barely nods as an introduction, says absolutely nothing about being late, and when the makeup artist accidentally gets a dab of concealer on his jeans, he swats her hand away as she attempts to clean it—complaining about a dry-cleaning bill.

You and the other girls share a look, the bubble of adoration you were in moments before starting to burst. You know actors are rarely the same in real life as the characters they portray…but this is so far from what you would have expected of him.

He yells for someone to bring him a coffee, and a meek production assistant (PA) scurries off to retrieve it from craft services. But when he brings it back, Hyunjin looks at the cup, then up to him and heaves a heavy sigh of annoyance.

“There’s a Ediya Coffee shop up the street. Get it from there.”

The PA bows, apologizes, and takes off so fast it gives a whole new meaning to the phrase running an errand.

With tensions already high on set from being behind, no one dares correct his attitude. It must be true that people can get anywhere on looks and talent, even if they’re shitty human beings.

Hyunjin changes into his suit for the commercial and, finally, filming resumes. He does the shots with Ye-ji first so she can wrap for the day, then you and the other girls are up.

The director has you do several practice runs, throwing out suggestions for Hyunjin to tweak his expression, and later chooses to have the girls, instead of just reaching out for him, to actually touch him—his face, his chest, his arms.

Hyunjin doesn’t seem too pleased at the idea.

“Watch your nails, girls, you might get a mouth full about a hospital bill,” you say quietly to break some of the tension that’s been lingering.

Some of the women laugh.

Hyunjin’s eyes find you in the crowd of women—his expression bone dry—and it shakes you to your core.

You promptly press your lips together and he quirks an eyebrow, as if saying ‘That’s right. Shut it.’

You don’t utter another word. In fact, you altogether avoid being in his direct line of sight for the rest of the shoot. When the director calls wrap, Hyunjin changes back into his own clothes, concealer stain and all, and leaves without saying goodbye. All you can think is how you hope to never work with him again.

I think 17-18 year old Severus didn't know what the Death Eaters were doing, that they were killing Muggle-borns? Slytherin has always had a bad attitude towards Muggle-borns.

A while ago, I told twitter I was glad lily died and it began some kind of thing, so spent a month on making this essay like justification of how Snape should be completely absolved of his crimes. This is a piece.

Willingly means by definition: ready, eager, or prepared to do something.

Snape was far from that. Guy wanted to die at age 21. Well then. I will tell you why he joined. Because he was afraid. I will explain it in 3 parts:

- highschool hierarchy

- school life of snape

- joining DUBIOUS POLITICS

1st is highschool hierarchy: Highschool is a smaller version of society. Fitting in, following rules, planning your route to a dream job, relationships, friendships, be confronted with adult-er problems than a child of 12 would comprehend, thus enhancing problem solving skills.

Snape was in that school for 7 years. Until he was 18. His small society was split in 4 parts.:

- Gryffindors (Marauders)

- Ravenclaws

- Hufflepuff's

- Slytherins. (Indoctrinated blood supremecists)

Marauders bullied him on the train ride TO school (they weren't even at school YET) because Snape told lily, he hoped for her to be in Slytherin. James who barged in, walks all over his opinion without telling why, where Snape obviously snaps back at, in return gets branded Snivellus and is almost tripped.

2nd: school life of snape

- Train scene were the gryffindors (marauders). In school the Ravenclaws and hufflepuffs either ignored or laughed alongside marauders that made it their solemn duty to harm Snape. Teachers did not extend a hand at all. Otherwise the kids would've learned their lesson by now. I mean, Albus is a wizard that even Voldemort was scared of. What would a bunch of teens do against Albus his words?

This is his reaction of Snape towards marauders, by name calling only:

Slytherin vs Gryffindor is a rivalry made in history. Slytherins simply hated gryffindors because they are Gryffindors. Snape settled with that. That was good enough for him, but of course those pure bloods won't listen to a half muggle like him and solely bully marauders only. They'll bully all Gryffindors and muggleborns. They didn't harm him in any form of way as badly as marauders did though.

Sure, Albus had a squad ready, but that was more or less out of precaution. Same way people have secret services in countries such fbi, cia and whatnot. Doesn't mean that because they are there, tomorrow is a war. No, simply precaution.

That's what I mean by the dubious part of the "dubious politics" not the ideals that the de stood for. Now, Voldemort is in fact a politician (to those that said, he wasn't). The book described him as handsome, charming and manipulative, persistent and knows what he wants.

Look at what makes a politician a good politician:

- Charming

- Articulate

- Charismatic (Charisma is another critical trait for successful politicians. Voters must believe in you, your vision for the future, and your ability to make that vision a reality.)

- Ambitious

- Driven

- Passionate about their causes.

- Persistence is critical in any political campaign. You will face setbacks and opposition.

Politicians are a unique breed of people. They are passionate about their beliefs and are not afraid to fight for what they believe in. They are also persuasive, articulate, and have a strong presence.

Now, I can already smell the comments "but then snape shouldn't have joined if Voldemort was such a good politician"

And honestly. It sickens me. Did you know at 18 how your whole government works? No right? Geez. He was only 18, afraid of marauders, people also forget how he tried to be good many many times and it backfired heavily upon him.

- 1st time being good, was trying to make a friend, which he did, how did that work out? Broken friendship.

- 2nd time was finding escape to Hogwarts. He wanted to leave his neglectful and abusive household. Go to school for dreams and work out all the magic he desired that his dad hated in the house. How did being hopeful to enter Hogwarts, work out for him? Crushed on the trainride to school.

Excuse him, for not being THAT hopeful after 7 years of torment from the marauders then. He gave up hope, the school delivered that future on his doorstep. Seven years isn't four years. Many of us hated highschool, that was only four years, imagine 7 whole fricking years with marauders using you as a doorstep to make their ACTUAL friends laugh.

Anyway, back to the politician part. Having no hope, treated as an outcast, fear is what led a teen like Snape into joining DE. As I stated previously too.

The party wasn't taken THAT seriously. Otherwise gryffindors wouldn't talk about it so jokingly. Lily had a good gist. She was actually terrified but accidentally pushed her friend to them with that fear. Why it wasn't taken seriously is because it had no kill count.

That's why during and after the war, many tried to change sides because it is not what they bargained for. Regulus changed for Kreacher, Snape changed for lily, many that were caught is also described in the books as that they were under the imperium curse.

Do we have that written down, now? Good. Let's see. I explained why Voldemort was very persuasive. A piece of the reason being greyback that joined tom for more lycan rights.

I got many comments saying "shedding blood for ideals is wrong"

Where I then said "then women's rights would've never existed, nor the french revolution or the war in USA to free slaves"

But of course, people will cherry pick stuff. Telling me "oh but comparing minorities to an actual cult is wrong"

Uhm?

Do people even know what minority means?

- definition minority: the smaller number or part, especially a number or part representing less than half of the whole.

"only a minority of properties are rented"

As much as we hate it. Purebloods were the minority against billions of muggles. In that wizarding world is an even smaller group of werewolves, treated like trash. A minority within a minority.

Fenrir greyback didn't kickstart that life. Laws and such had been made BEFORE his time. What did the laws do?

- keep lycans unemployed

- keep lycans poor

- keep the lycans starving

Remus, is not even like Fenrir. How does he live?

- unemployed

- poor

- starving

That's what Voldemort goes after. He feeds the minorities ideals to join him and overthrow the current system of the wizarding world to rule said world.

What else is a minority? Oh right, the 28 sacred families. Black, Crouch, Lestrange, Carrow, Malfoy, Avery and Rosier were the only 7 sacred pureblood that entered that lifestyle. Sounds like a minority to me.

As much as we hate it, the 1% of the rich in current population is the minority. But with minority we tend to involve:

- race

- laws

- gender

- religion

- ethnicity

But it isnt always like that. People love throwing around words to feel proud and big, but half of them simply use it to guilt trip the other, scare them off and call it a day. Well not me.

Whether Voldemort would've kept his word or not is not up to us to fill that in. Book literally states:

🛑 "You haven't heard of him?" Lupin's hands closed convulsively in his lap. "Fenrir Greyback is, perhaps, the most savage werewolf alive today. He regards it as his mission in life to bite and to contaminate as many people as possible; he wants to create enough werewolves to overcome the wizards. Voldemort has promised him prey in return for his services. Greyback specializes in children. Bite them young, he says, and raise them away from their parents, raise them to hate normal wizards. Voldemort has threat- ened to unleash him upon people's sons and daughters; it is a threat that usually produces good results."

- notice the first half of the text. Fenrir wants to overcome wizards and witches (that look down on lycans) by biting them. In other words, when enough people have changed to what they despise and frown upon, they won't think so ill about lycans anymore and will show more empathy. It's literally "how do you like it now" placed in fiction.

Greyback happens to be specialized in kids and even that is a form of revenge to go after children, that parents love, breaking their hearts by taking what they love the most and they are easy targets. It shows a deep and twisted sense of self justification. Not because he likes it, that would mean he is a form of a psychopath.

And with the system so against you, it's highly unlikely to be born like that and not created by the society itself that would rather starve your kind to death than be open minded of the issue that lycans simply cannot help their condition.

But last time I said this, I was called a greyback apologist. When we learn about Hitler (tyrannically deranged country leaders) or psychopaths, do we suddenly become their apologists? No right. Greyback is a simple puzzle piece to the bigger picture of why Voldemort's group is dubious politics.

This is why Voldemort made an ideal politician, creating said dubious politics. He said "he'd kill muggles" I know but not everyone took it seriously. Treated him like the mad man shouting on the streets. And those 18-year olds that joined were barely developed. I am using Malfoy as an example. These are the pureblood children you're blaming:

Malfoy by definition could not help it. The racism he was raised up with it's like religion and culture. If you're raised with it, you won't believe anything is wrong because your parents are nice to you so everything seems okay.

When you're older and meet the new world, and suddenly hit with the fact that your parents were the most racist of the racist. You will become defensive because that would mean, half your life was a lie. Especially with a group like gryffindors rubbing it in your face that you're snakes and will become DE anyway. And the principal allows it.

Draco, like many before him tend to even be playful with the mudblood word. That's why many white kids back then could say the n-word easier than nowadays. We as a society are focusing on making the world better by helping to get rid of that word. But back then, the word was as normal as saying "car", "home" and you get the gist.

Way he calls hermione a mudblood is almost playful. Half smiling or like cuss word such as "damn". He doesn't truly imagine a heavy history behind that word from a muggleborn THEIR pov. Like many kids of Slytherin, that weren't shown empathy and it wasn't shown to them either.

His parents spent 11 years indoctrinating the kid (like many other purist children) that muggleborns were basically shit and should not even touch his feet as a figure of speech.

Draco: The more he spent time around others and the further his brain developed, the more he realized how wrong it was.

Other kids: Regulus died at 17 or 18. Many other students died at 20 or 21. They never could change nor were they allowed. Regulus was an example to us, not them. For them it was a threat. But they would realize that Regulus wasn't amongst them, since the kids died at 17 or 18 and the war took place 2 or 3 years later. And they knew if they defied, they'd end up like Regulus.

Meanwhile other kids in Slytherins (that weren't raised in indoctrinated household) have to fend themselves against other purist (indoctrinated) kids or keep face because they come from a prestigious family. While the teachers give no help at all.

And no, trying to create activities for kids of Slytherin house obviously won't cut it. What teachers had to do was not let Gryffindor run loose and nitpick the Slytherins. That's what had to be done. (Someone said, Albus tried to create activities for Slytherin house too)

Example: I'm brown, but if white kids were treated nicer and I create a hate group because we then can talk about being treated unfairly. And the school decides to do activities for us brown kids to fit in or change. While they still treat white kids better, it's obvious that I, a brown kid won't stop my hate club.

In other words. Voldemort banded the minorities (sacred 28, werewolves) called in children that infected others or had a tough life and fed them empty dreams with the bigger belief "killing muggles"

How many of these kids even met a muggle? Talked to one and such? Never. They don't know human life value because it wasn't taught to them. When kids learn to become empathic between ages of 5 and 10. These purist children skipped it.

Many were raised like that or were already in survival mode as Snape. Muggle life was kept insensitive. School didn't teach anything muggle related either. I mean, not knowing the function of a rubber duck in 1992 is a new feat of "how well do magical people know muggles."

Again, speaking of a pov from 1978, why many could easily join Voldemort. Not any year after. I hope I explained this well enough. Also, my apologies if this sounds agressive. I tried to change a lot, but this was meant against the snaters and Lily fans on twitter.

Well, here it is. My most anticipated kdrama of the year (probably, but we shall see we are only in march). I truly will gobble most of the things that my darling IU will do or at least give it a go and When Life gives you Tangerines is no exception. (One day I will actually watch My Mister, but I just keep hearing that it will make me sad and I am just not in the mood for the melancholy that that drama might bring).

When Life gives you Tangerines doesn't carry a melancholy with it, but rather the bitter sweetness of life with a hint of hope and longing and as the title of the drama might suggest our main leads find themselves in quite sorrowful and difficult situations due to the life that they were born in, or in Aesun's case because she was born poor and a woman, and they just got to make the best out if it and just keep trying and trying and trying.

But instead of lemons they get tangerines… because they are from Jeju.

And it is that bittersweet hope of wanting a better life for yourself and all those asperations of youth where you dream of something grander than what you have that really does tug at your heartstrings. The drama is nailing that feeling as it quite rapidly tells us the story of Aesun and Gwan Sik but it still uses it's time well and manages to convey all of it's emotions through good camera shots, acting and dialog.

It sure is going to make us bawl our eyes out eventually. I can just feel it.

Even if we go from the child to the late teen versions of the characters in a span of one episode and then keep exploring them through their very early twenties in episode 2 (which is where I am currently at) and the pacing is quite fast we do get a good sense of the characters or at least Ae Sun. Gwan Sik is a little more ambiguous at this point as this sort of bumbling, quite boy who has always liked our main girl and has a heart of gold. I wish that himbo had a little more going for him, like a slight edge or something but he is earnest and sweet and that exploration can come later. These first two episodes were all about Ae Sun anyway.

This does feel somewhat similar to Park Bo Gum's character in Reply 1988 (which to me is his best role to date and the only role where that boy truly impressed me) but also slightly different and it will be interesting to see how life will jade him and if he will become as useless as the rest of the men that we have gotten to know so far in this show.

Because I think the drama is hinting that they are going to get to a similar spot as their parents or the adults around them by the end and the dreams and hopes will be passed down to their children and the endless cycle will continue. Because damn, life is hard and lot of people don't make it out of adulthood without loosing their spark and hopes and dreams. And it will be sad and heartbreaking to watch.

I do adore the naivety and the hope and the anger that is within Ae Sun who had never gotten the things she truly wanted, or at least not for too long, whatever it is. Not time off for her mom, not getting picked for president of her class because she was poor or not getting the tuition money she was promised which prompts her to run away from Jeju without much of a plan (no ID papers or real money… just some trinkets she can't sell) because it just felt so real that frustration and that rashness of hers. It might be annoying in another drama, but it wasn't that smart, but here it fits the story. The naivety feels so real.

The four episodes per week is a bit much for me. It's hard to avoid spoilers and I am not really a binge watcher. I enjoy my two episodes, back to back, kdrama schedule. I have gotten so used to that pace of watching kdramas and it also means that the drama will be over way sooner and will leave me in the void much quicker than I am used to or want. But I can cope. I just have to do better at avoiding spoilers.

keshi is The marin artist so it felt wrong to not include him :3 this particular verse really sticks out to me: 'too late, don't wanna fall, baby, i just don't need somebody else to throw me aside, but i'm up all night, thinkin' 'bout how it could be you to change my heart.' i interpret it as rin finally coming around to acknowledging his feelings and the root cause of what was making him so hesitant to do so in the past! so it's a bit of a turning point for him!

we begin with jin and we end with jin! a completely different vibe from our first angsty song — but i love that he sings both of these songs bc it feels like he's telling different parts of the same story! an unfavorable beginning turns into a happy ending!

Leaders domination.

Irene, Karina , Ahn yujin, Yeji. The 4 leaders could not understand why IU is the queen of kpop! They wanted their group to gain more popularity and be termed the best but with IU being the queen it hinders them.

The 4 leaders banded together realising the only way to win is by breaking IU. They knew IU was a slut and that she only showed her angelic self to the public. The only way was to make her their sex pet.

With that plan, the leaders convinced IU manager to drop her off at a love hotel unsuspecting to IU, before it was too late , with her opening the door to a bdsm theme roomed.

With ropes in their hands , straps on their waist and all sorts of toys to play with IU’s body… IU was going to get a night of her life. Love to see degradation play, spit, slapping , Dp nasty body worship . Etc love to see what you have in plans ! Hope it’s an interesting plot

I binged the entire first volume today on women's day, and i'm really happy I stumbled on watching this today. The main character really felt the anger of a woman who doesn't receive respect or love or honor but she wan't internalizing it, she didn't sit there and take it quietly, she fought back, yelled, kicked, and screamed. If I were to quote the show then "She was more like a whistle." It encapsulated a passionate young love, a strong and brave woman and a good man and a good husband. He didn't stand for her being treated badly and respected and honored her, which was't common at those times. I'm really happy I stumbled on this amazing show on women's day to remind me to be opinionated, passionate, have respect and to not let people walk over me.

I also loved the cinematography and colours of the show. The way the lighting and shots were set for each frame really set the tone for each moment. I also loved Park Bogum's and IU's acting. They are always so good at portraying their roles with integrity and do them justice. Also I loved loved loved their characters and how they're written, first of all I am always a lover of sweet men who are loyal and Park Bogum's character was the human version of that. He never let her be walked over, was always there for her and made sacrifices for her and he still loved and treasured her. IU's character in volume 1 had self respect and loved her husband and child and never let either of them be walked over either.

What I suspect and hope will happen in the next volumes is that we see their different generations of women grow up, find love in the right person who respects them, fight against people looking down on them, and in general be brave.

Anyhow as you can tell I loved the show for its story, its characters and cinematography, so I definitely recommend this for anyone looking for strong female characters, loving and good relationships, and an interesting and realistic story.

When Life Gives You Tangerines

*Spoiler alert*

I just recently finished watching this Kdrama series When Life Gives You Tangerines starring Oh Ae-sun played by IU and Yang Gwan Sik played by Park Bo-gum and guess what, it did not disappoint at all. People were talking about this drama and how different people can relate to it. Some say that every episode made them cry and personally they were all right. Episode one made me continue to watch more episodes. Never a dull moment in this drama. Up until the end my eyes were pouring hard (dehydration calling).

One of my favorite features of this drama is that it speaks of history in Jeju. It represents culture and family. The representation of tangerines, the haeneyo is a plus for me. It showed a multigeneration of people from year 1960s onwards. I love movies with a vintage vibe and a twist feature of the present generation. I was also amazed that this series was based on a true story according to a post I saw. The story of Ae-sun and Gwan Sik are stories worth sharing to the world.

I would like to commend IU for playing different characters from different generations. We could really see the difference in all the characters she played from being the young Ae-sun to being Geum-Myeong. The life of Ae-sun was not easy, especially during her childhood. Being a poor girl in those times was difficult despite being a brilliant child. No matter how hard she tried to elevate her life, circumstances were too difficult. Women nowadays are lucky as they can take on leadership roles and hold positions in the government. They can be whoever they want to be. I hope women will continue to excel and be empowered.

I also love the fact that Ae-sun writes poems all throughout the series. I can relate to how Ae-sun writes poems and her love for words. I am in the same boat. I love writing poems. This series made me want to write more poems again. Maybe I will write again.

But to tell you honestly, my favorite scene of IU in this series was when she saw her child Dong Myeong die during the storm. You can really see that IU felt her character. As if it was really her child that died. Plus, the oceans and sky poured hard adding the ambiance. When it comes to the character of Gwan Sik played by Park Bo-gum, my favorite scene was when he jumped in the ocean to go back to Ae-sun. It was raining hard, and he swam the ocean just to go back to Ae-sun, that scene was truly iconic, and upon knowing that Park Bo-gum did it without a double. Salute.

The character of Gwan Sik portrays the modern-day walking "Green Forest" hahaha. This is a real man you all. His commitment to his family and wife is on point. He is the very example of the Filipino term haligi ng tahanan. They both are destined to be together.

People might also be torn between the two love interests of Geum Myeong. The first love and the last love. In the beginning, I thought she would be marrying her first love Young Beom like her mother, but I was wrong. Not being with the person, you love is heartbreaking, but it would be more heartbreaking if you would not love yourself more. I remember what Geum Myeong said "I do love you deeply. But I love myself deeply, too. I cried together with Geum Myeong it was too painful to watch, especially during the wedding scene of Geum Myeong, people thought they would end up together, but he only saw her wearing her wedding gown, as he promised before. Even though they did not end up together, they both became a lesson for one another. As the saying goes, there will be people who will just pass by and leave you a life lesson.

I also noticed that there were scenes in the series depicting some iconic re-enactments. Similar to the Sixteen Candles movie, a couple thing is when a couple puts their hand in the pocket of their lover, Ae-sun usually does this with Gwan Sik. Also, a scene from The Titanic is when Geum Myeong was being drawn by Park Cheong Sob played by Kim Seon-ho. Jack did this with Rose with such nostalgia.

I was also happy for the fact that Kim Seon-ho is back. His character Park Chung Seob, was somewhat similar to Gwan Sik in how he truly cares for Geum Young and his child. You can truly fall in love with his character especially when he drew Geum Young's portrait all emotions are poured into it. The way he cared for Geum Myeong from afar was heartwarming. Their story was like destiny at play as they crossed paths after a long time. He even ran fast just to catch the bus where Geum Young was riding. In his mind, it was now or never. If you are meant to be together, you will find each other again.

Though their family life was not perfect and plenty of problems arose within the story line. But they never gave up on each other. Despite all the misunderstandings and differences among their family especially their children, in the end, they never turn their back on their family. Just similar to the Filipino culture of family. I understand why plenty of people from the story envy the family life of Ae-sun and Gwan Sik.

Another plot twist in the series was unexpected for me upon find out that the little girl with the Squirtle sticker was the reincarnation of her mother. There were hidden messages all throughout the series, but I did not notice it. I applaud the writer for adding those details in the scene from finding the ring of Ae-sun in the flower fields to being the editor of Ae-sun's book.

The scene of Ae-sun's grandmother having Alzheimer's disease and forgetting other members of her family except Ae-sun brought me back to the memory of my grandmother. I still miss her until now and I could still remember her from the last time I was with her. Memories with grandparents always makes me cry.

When the final episodes came out last week. These episodes made me cry more haha. My eyes were too heavy. I cannot stop crying for the last four episodes especially knowing that Gwan Sik got sick and died. I was like Ae-sun will be left all alone. In the final moments of Gwan Sik's life you can clearly see he lived a meaningful life. He devoted his life to his wife and children and even in the end he still made sure that Ae-sun would still be comfortable by stocking up all the hair clips he bought and then arranging the mugs, cups, and plates of where Ae-sun could reach it.

The love of Ae-sun and Gwan Sik reflects the Bible verse:

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Nowadays it is difficult to find the love that Ae-sun and Gwan Sik shared. They set the bar higher. People should not settle for something less than they deserve. Just pray to find that love and who knows it may come when you least expect it.

I would rate this Kdrama 10/10, five stars. Another favorite of mine. Can you share some of your favorite scenes?

Wow, okay, I’ve seen a bit of the translation drama now, and I regret to say a lot of people who very clearly do not know how to speak Japanese are being extremely polarizing about some perfectly acceptable word choices in the official manga. This is precisely the sort of stuff I hoped to help minimize when I started doing my translations. It’s been a while since I had to put out a warning like this, so I’ll do it now.

Be careful about getting too married to a particular word choice in English. A lot of word choices are very much up to a translator’s discretion. Language is fluid, and Japanese lends itself particularly well to puns and wordplay.

For example (and this is a particularly good example to explain my point), let’s talk about this panel:

Which leads into what seems to be the crux of the matter: Toga's "love." I've noted in passing before that having her use the word "suki" to describe this love is very curious. It's just an adjective that means something is the object of your affection. It's not a specific word for love like the nouns "ai (love, but broadly)" or "koi (romantic love)" are. "Suki" is just as often translated as "like" as it is "love."

In the above panel, we have the phrase “suki na mono wo suki to iu” (which I translated as “you tell those you like that you like them.”) The word “suki” is being used as an adjective to modify “mono.” However, there is an interesting nuance that is impossible for me to convey in an English translation!

The word “mono” can mean both “(tangible) thing” and “person.” Usually we can tell the difference based on context and the use of the correct kanji. BUT THERE IS NO KANJI USED IN THE ABOVE PANEL. The effect is that what this “mono” refers to is ambiguous. Is it the “things Toga likes” or the “people Toga likes”? It’s not clear: which means that both readings are correct! In fact, the word is probably meant to include BOTH meanings. “All things or people Toga likes.”

And the reason I can’t properly translate that into English is because I have no word that refers to such a thing. In English, it’s a question of “what Toga likes” vs “whom Toga likes,” but in Japanese BOTH meanings are captured by just one phrase.

The most accurate and extremely awkward translation in English would just be “You say who and what you like.” It’s not really something a person would say naturally, especially depending on the context of the conversation surrounding the phrase.

Additionally, “suki” is a very vague word that can be translated in many ways. It gets translated into English as various words all the time. I just decided to go with “like,” but “love” or “dear” would be just as viable. Like I said, it’s kind of up to the translator’s discretion. (And think about the corollary in English. “Like” may not usually mean “love,” but if you were in high school and told someone, especially of the opposite sex, “I like you,” “like” suddenly takes on a whole new meaning.)

Anyways, the whole point of this is that I just want to caution people against jumping to conclusions about these things, especially as you encounter disagreements about such things by fans in the wild. It may be true that a translator has a particular agenda they’re trying to push that runs counter to the message of a story, but it may also be a much more honest and correct translation than you expect. And if you ever need it, I’m always happy to give my perspective on a specific translation to point out the more charitable and non-charitable interpretations, the potential ambiguities, the nitty-gritty grammar issues, etc. (to the best of my ability, of course--I am not a final arbiter on these things either, just another learner myself).

last book: that i finished — park sang-young's love in the big city (only book deserving of being described as 'bittersweet'). i am currently reading one non-fiction, one fiction, and one poetry collection to give myself options: joya chatterji's shadows at noon (interesting although not as pathbreaking as it posits to be), penelope fitzgerald's human voices (FUN, my dream job might have been to be her assistant or editor or publisher), and cavafy's selected poems (like licking sweet rain and learning all truths at once)

last movie: rewatched swades (cunty shahrukh aaaah) and started soundtrack to a coup d'etat

last tv show: that i finished — love scout (not as fun as i hoped it would be but i didn't mind). that i am watching — undercover high school (kinda fun but she gotta find out his real identity SOON or it will simply not work for me)

sweet/savoury/spicy: sweet

last thing I searched online: remembered keeley hawes' magnificent performance in line of duty and went to check out how long the show ran for (till 2021 for 6 seasons)

current obsession(s): park hyung-sik, how to do my job better, my girlfriends

looking forward to: this month of fasting and terrible sleep cycles and feeling something akin to peace. lee je-hoon in grey hair. iu and bogum back on our screens. this year to slow down. a short trip during eid with the family. the birthdays of most of my dearest ones, which fall in the months between march to sept.
